HI Gary, thanks for keeping me reminded of all the great health benefits out there. I have a few questions, I know you are so knowledgeable about healthy living.

1. I cannot find the Hogberry tea on Amazon any longer – do you have another source? Or is the tincture a better way to take it?

2. Ashwagandha and Tumeric – I have been taking a brand I buy from Whole Food but did not know if there is a better brand that you would recommend (from the LifeSpa Store etc…)

3. Vidya’s website says to only use transdermal Vitamin D3 (stating that it is hard on the liver when taken internally.. ) and John Douillards site only sells liquid Vit D3 – can you speak from your experience which is the better product to purchase.

I want to make sure I am doing all I need to do to keep my immune system as strong as I can with the onset of Winter. BRRRrrrrr….   Hope all is well, please say “HELLO” to Merri from me!

Hogberry is also called Bearberry and more commonly Uva Ursi.  Amazon.com offers several types of Uva Ursi and I buy Nature’s Way tablets there.

The website suggesting transdermal only was created by a physician offering transdermal products so I take this with a grain of salt. Anytime I can get a vitamin through the skin rather than orally I do so, but do not make it an issue. I have found Dr John Douillard DC to be of the most help over 30 years so am comfortable with his advice.

How the body gets health-giving frequency can be important.

Whenever I can, I try to get my vitamins in the way they come from nature.  Since the skin synthesizes vitamin D3, getting it through a transdermal process makes sense… IF  the process of getting it via the skin is not too complicated or expensive.

Dr John Douillard taught me that the fastest way to get anything into the body is through the skin or the lungs.  This is one reason why Merri and I focus so much on aromatherapy.

We also use a form of health balancing and healing called Syntonics which employs the use of a Photo Synthesizer, an instrument that uses therapeutic applications of selected frequencies of light.

The College of Syntonic Optometry (1) was formed in 1933 as a post graduation educational organization, to teach and train optometrists on the application of light frequencies as a part of providing visual rehabilitation for patients.

Since the beginning of time, it has been recognized that good health came from fresh air, good diet, and sunlight.  It has long been recognized that light has significant effects on the human being, even in regulating the circadian (day/night) cycle of how we were created to live.

The sun awakens us (a stimulus) to the dawn of each day and is more of the reds, oranges, yellow intensity of colors. While green is the balancing color of the trees and grass. Toward the evening it then changes to more the calming colors of blue, indigo, and violet acting as a relaxant. The cool, calming colors are not normally used in advertising for good reason…they are calming, good for bedrooms. Casinos and major restaurant chains might use a lot more hot colors like red, orange and yellow. Each of these colors can have definite effects on our behavior.

Decades ago while in Ecuador, due to the high altitude, I passed out. No big deal except the place I chose, a marble clad bathroom lined with lots of sharp hard corners. To this day I do not know how I managed to break my nose, crack the back of my skull, create a concussion and wrench my neck.

Problems with my memory arose. Stress started to grow. Clear thinking became harder.

Remembering the thoughts even harder. Writing, normally a natural ease, became a chore. All these problems grew and this was confusing. “Senior Moments?” I asked. After all I was in my 50s.

After more than a year of increasing struggle I went to an optometrist who specialized in Visuopathy, (or Behavioral Optometry).

Visuopathy is very different than optometry. Optometry looks at what the eye sees. Visuopathy looks at what is happening to the signal from the eye to the brain and how the brain is processing the information it receives.

The problem was that my eyes still were able to see but what had happened was the blow to the head created swelling around the optic nerve. This edema scrambled the message that the eye was sending to the brain. The process of unscrambling this message took up so much brain capacity that the brain did not have sufficient ability to deal with all the incoming data. In other words, though my eyes saw things just fine with excellent peripheral vision, my brain was only processing 2% of the data coming into my left eye and ½ % of the data coming from my right eye.

In short I had horrendous tunnel vision and this created all types of problems, making it hard for me to drive, to work on the computer, to remember.

Remembering a set of four numbers or more to enter into the computer was impossible.

I was terribly visually handicapped, but what made this worse was that I did not even know it.

The stress created behavioral problems (excessive anger) and made work enormously onerous.

For example the optometrist showed me five diagrams and asked to remember them. It was a snap.

But when asked to draw the diagrams, after just one drawing, the memory of the other four was totally gone! The simple neural muscular task of drawing created such a demand on my limited functional vision that the brain had to flush short term memory to handle the load.

In the beginning, the optometrist wanted me to have the frequency of lithium.

Lithium is a mood-stabilizing agent indicated for the treatment of manic episodes and as maintenance treatment for bipolar disorders. This is truly horrible stuff. Lithium toxicity has so many serious, dangerous contraindications of which severe infection, diabetes, Myasthenia Gravis, chronic heart failure and kidney disease with reduction in kidney function are just a few.

Instead of prescribing such a dangerous drug, the optometrist had me use a Photo Synthesizer to look at the frequency of lithium. This allowed me to have an immediate lithium impact on my brain without all the dangerous contraindications.

Three weeks of treatment aimed at reducing the edema and retraining the brain changed my life, my personality and my ability to work. I could suddenly remember and type long strings of numbers and my mind was so clear!

That treatment has remained with me for nearly 20 years. Whenever I feel a bit out of balance,  I drag out my photo synthesizer and look at the color of green. This is a balancing frequency.

Escape the Health Care Myth

For thousands of years, human imagination has used myths to build astounding networks of mass cooperation including the scientific notions of disease management that is called “health care”.   The social norms that sustain our belief in medicine are not based on ingrained instincts nor experience but on belief in shared myths.

We live by a mythically based collection of laws that create strict hierarchies that create health care protocols, make health care policy, law and provide health care.  The foundation of this Western based imagined health care order is scientific research.

We deify double blind studies, even though we know that many of them have hidden agendas, or for various reasons, are flawed.   We know the entire system is riddled with conflicts of interest.

This imagined order is not specifically an evil conspiracy nor a useless mirage.   The system is a way from hundreds of millions of people people to cooperate effectively.   Otherwise those who take advantage of the system would take even worse advantage with “snake oil”.

However we as individuals should see that the health care system is not objectively true.   Changes in research  results, such as with coffee, show the fallacy of double blind.   Common medical beliefs allow nations to cooperate effectively for a better overall society.  A bulk of the population buys into the myth and this provides the a sense of order.

We have to take our health in our own hands because the establishment keeps changing the story.

You and I should not slavishly believe and use health care as recommended by anyone.  We should monitor all of our health activity with our logic, intuition and experience.

We are in an enviable position.  We can apply our experience, our access to Western medical thought and the wisdom of healers from past ages and many cultures to create our own health plan that feels and works best for us.

A recent article in USA Today, “As obesity’s link to COVID-19 grows, one family that lost 24-year-old daughter diets together” (1) tells the tale.

The article says:  The parents and two brothers of Silvia Deyanira Melendez, 24, are all in therapy after losing their daughter and sister to COVID-19 on March 28.  She weighed more than 300 pounds with a body mass index of 60, double the BMI considered obese. This most likely contributed heavily to her Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and a heart condition that required open-heart surgery two years ago.

The chronic conditions that increase the risk of serious illness and death of COVID-19 are now well known: diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and being older than 65. Obesity is less well known or understood. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention groups “severe obesity,” defined as having a BMI of 40 or higher, with the other known “risk factors for serious illness” for COVID-19.

A growing number of studies and data on COVID-19 deaths confirm the link. The extra weight on people in the 40-plus BMI range who contract COVID-19 increases the chance they will require hospitalization, most likely in the intensive care unit. It also hampers the ability of physicians to treat them, especially with ventilators, doctors say.

Body fat complicates many health problems.   For example more than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer.  Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear. Body fat.

Studies showed that reduced body fat creates  a 25% lower chance of developing cancer.


Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.? I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat, COVID-19 and cancer? Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body. Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system. Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them. The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble). This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways. When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead. These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation. Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

When you burn fat you turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy. Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins. Ecuador Shamanic Exercise

Keeping up with accelerating change is a key to reducing stress, having more wealth and enjoying life more.  We need to continually grow smarter and wiser.

A recent message Ecuador shamanic thought and the brain at this site showed how we naturally become smarter as we age if we remain busy and keep looking for new activities.

The search for expanded horizons also expands our ability to think!

Ecuador shamanic exercises can also strengthen our mental capabilities.

Research by neuroscientist Art Kramer, from the University of Illinois, has proven that our ability to grow and change — is improved as the brain ages if we stay fit.

In his studies on exercising the body, Kramer found that this exercises the brain as well and that memory can improve with treadmill workouts.

“Over a six-month to one-year period,” Kramer says, “three days a week, working up to an hour a day, people improved in various aspects of both short-term and long-term memory.”

Aging test subjects were given treadmill training. Then they had brain scans.   The subjects with the treadmill training had larger hippocampi, the brain area key for memory, then test subjects without the exercise.   Other brain regions too — central for decision-making, planning and multi-tasking — were also larger in the treadmill exercisers. “There are a number of regions,” says Kramer, “that on MRI scans tend to show not just stability but increases as a function of exercise in middle-age and older brains.”

The study suggests that both physical exercise and cognitive brain training working in combination are especially effective.

Kramer’s research shows that the combination of the two contributes to brain health.

One of the 58 year old scientists involved in the research for example does a New York Times crossword and numbers puzzle every morning, as well as a series of toning and stretching exercises and at least 20 minutes of aerobic exercise each day.

Ecuador shamans have known this for centuries and teach their apprentices to do both physical and mental exercise.


One of the most important exercises taught to us by the Ecuador shamans is the Llama Walk to strengthen the legs to better absorb the earth energy (frequency).  Here I am on one of our hand bridges in the Blue Ridge doing the Llama Walk.


I no longer jog… but like walking and hiking… especially up and down hills. Here I am hiking up Mt. Cotacachi with our hound dog Ma.

This search for health, vitality and longevity is one of the reasons I really enjoy living out of the city in Ecuador, Florida and at our Blue Ridge Farm.

There is plenty  of space to roam, to walk and to explore.  Merri and I have long discussions on these walks that keep us filled with interest.

A reader recently sent this note:  Could you or a member of your staff provide responses to the following questions, which may be of interest to many of your readers:  1.  Is there a gym  or “fitness center,” or two located in Cuenca, Ecuador?  2.  If so, can anyone advise of average cost to join and monthly fees?  3.  Same questions with regard to Cotacachi?  A gym or “fitness center” or two (or more of them)  4. Average cost to join and monthly fees in Cotachachi?  Thanks very much for considering these questions.

Cotacachi has one gym I know of with fitness classes every morning.  This gym is primitive by US standards and costs $1.50 a day.

Cuenca has a Curves for ladies started by readers Bill & Leita Bush.    This is a US franchised operation and offers workouts and fitness classes for women only.
