Summer Health Tip


Summer is the fire season for health.

An important health tip is to eat foods that balances the excess of the seasons.  In summer (fire season) eat foods that pacify a build up of heat in the body.  During the summer it is easy… even likely…. especially in the aggressive Western fired up societies to accumulate too much heat in the body.  Here are some tasty ways to get rid of some the inner fire .

Good summer foods

Eating summer foods is a great way to reduce excess summer heat from the body and the habit can also make you look five years younger at the same time.  Both Andean and Indian science of life, look at health as a balance between three physical elements,  motion (air), material (water) and digestion (fire).

One way to balance nutrition is categorize food into six flavors, sweet, salt, bitter, astringent, sour and pungent.

Each category either pacifies or aggravates the elements.  For example salt, sour and pungent aggravates fire (the digestive element) which is sensitive to heat.  Sweet, astringent and bitter on the other hand pacify fire.

So during the fiery dog days we should take additional care to eat more heat pacifying foods.

Reduce the intake of salty, spicy and sour foods. Eat more astringent (lettuce, celery, spinach, asparagus, green beans, etc.) and bitter (lentils) foods. Learn three tricks to cool the summer heat.

Tip #2: Eat watermelon.

Watermelon is a cleanser.  Eat a whole, big one if you can.  This cleansing works as the flushing action of the melon removes excessive fire, water and air.

The melon must be fresh, whole and cut within 20 minutes. Watermelon is a sponge that absorbs and flushes free radicals from the system.  If you let the melon sit after cutting, it oxidizes and loses its cleansing capacity.  After sitting for awhile it is filled with free radical from the air and cannot absorb yours.

The rule is “Eat it alone or leave it alone”.

Make the melon your entire meal and eat nothing for a while after.

Sound crazy?

I thought so but tried it after watching an Andean Shaman prescribe it for a woman suffering a severe rash (a summer fire imbalance).  I felt so good that I now make this a regular habit during the summer…and thoroughly enjoy it!

Vrinda Devani, MD, an Obstetrician and Gynecologist, who has has studied Ayurveda extensively explains why in her article “How to Eat Summer’s Favorite Fruit (Watermelons!): ALONE!” (1)

Here’s an excerpt from the article:  Watermelon is over 90% water and, like most fruits, it passes with ease through your stomach. Melons, in general, are simpler in content than other fruits, which is why Ayurveda says:  Eat melons by themselves (not even with other fruit!).

When foods (that are normally digested with ease and pass through the digestive tract with little delay) are combined with foods that take more processing (especially cheese and protein-heavy hamburgers or veggie patties), they have to wait for the digestive tract to break down and digest those heavier foods. While the melon sits there and waits, it begins to ferment, creating gas and indigestion, amongst other digestive issues.

So, next time you are tempted by juicy watermelons or other melons, consider eating it first. Then go enjoy the party for a half hour to an hour before you enjoy the rest of the food.

Tip #3: Switch to Coconut Oil

Coconut oil, coconut milk and spices like fennel seeds, coriander, cilantro, fennel and cardamom pacify fire and make even the fire aggravating foods, such as tomatoes, less aggravating.

One litmus test for whether temperatures are right for coconut oil, is liquidity.  If the oil turns liquid at room temperatures, it’s time to use it.

Eat with the seasons and your natural health can be better.  Summer’s hot, so now’s the time to eat more cooling foods.

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.  I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat and cancer?   Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.   Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation.  Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

The way to avoid this storage of deadly toxicity is to keep stress down, while digestion and detoxification pathways remain good.

Burn Fat to Burn Toxins

When you burn fat not primarily for weight loss, (though you will lose weight) but for purification, you can turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy.   Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins.  As the toxicity drops, the nervous system has reduced stress and will naturally burn fat instead of sugar.

Intermittent fasting is one way to get the body to burn fat.  There is a way of eating that helps reduce weight, improve energy and purify the body as it returns to a state of natural health.

This is a simple easy way to improve and restore feeling good, but works best when combined with better nutrition, moderate exercise and a purification program that helps make sure that the body is not overwhelmed with too much purification at once.

Intermittent fasting is guaranteed to work, if you have even reasonable nutrition, moderate physical activity and stick with it.  The problem is in the sticking.  When the brain is hooked on metabolizing sugar it can be very demanding.   When we try going an extended period without a sugar, the brain will have a hissy fit and demand that we eat or drink something sweet or starchy or alcoholic.

Sticking through a fast just does not work when the brain pulls out its bag of tricks, from sweet whispers (just one chocolate won’t hurt- but it will!)  all the way to chills sweats and dizziness.   Intermittent fasting, without help, can require enormous discipline that most of us cannot maintain long enough.

The Secret Chargemaster Revealed

Few places can destroy health and ruin a lifetime of savings faster than a hospital.  We are at risk from pocketbook surgery and the incredibly dangerous “Chargemaster”.   See below why chargemasters were normally kept secret, how a 2018 federal law requires their disclosure and how to gain protection from their abuse.

How can it be that medical costs are so high? Why is it so difficult to figure out the charge for a medical procedure?

The government in trying to help answer these questions began requiring hospitals from Jan. 1, 2019 to post their chargemaster lists.

These enormous lists of products and services ranging from a single aspirin up to a complicated surgery does little to answer these questions.

This very weak attempt to create transparency only provides data that is difficult to decipher and is mind-boggling for the consumer.

Chargemasters can include tens of thousands of items and procedures, with technical names and abbreviations that few can understand.

Plus when one goes into the hospital no one knows exactly what items and procedures will be necessary since treatment can vary widely based on the age and health and condition.

So listing the chargemaster isn’t helpful or meaningful, but simply gives hospitals one more excuse for outrageous costs… “but we listed what these costs”.

Modern American health care is under pressure.  Despite horrendous costs, the system is faltering.  At times the care is more dangerous than the illness.  For example hospitals are the worst place to have a heart attack.  The University of North Carolina, did a study and found that 40% of the patients who had hearts attacks in the hospital died before being discharged.  (The study compared that with only a 4% death rate for those who had heart attacks outside the hospital.)

Plus it was recently revealed that medical endoscopy scopes in hospitals were infecting patients with deadly drug-resistant bacteria.  The facts about this had not been previously disclosed.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that hospital-acquired infections alone kill 99,000 people each year.  Here is an even worse hospital mortality fact.

Often, what patients catch in the hospital is worse than what sent them there.  Governments and health care agencies agree  – antibiotic resistance is a “nightmare.”  An antibiotic-resistant bacteria may be spreading in more hospitals than patients know.  About one in every 25 hospitalized patients gets an infection and a 2013 report from the Journal of Patient Safety showed that medical errors are the third-leading cause of death in the country.

Along with the risk of hospital acquired illness and medical errors, the second huge threat to our well being… is health care costs, especially at hospitals.  This is because of the secrets in the chargemaster and the people who do not want us to know how much hospital costs have risen .  Motivations beyond our good health, like corporate greed, want to keep us in the dark about health care cost.

The hospital bill above is part of a story about a $110,000 infection and why hospital “chargemasters” are often secret.  This story tells how one person with resistant devastating infection ran up a $110,000 hospital bill only to find that Medicare would only pay $2,300 from treatment of infection.

Secret of the Chargemasters

Being in a hospital can kill as well as cure.  There are odds on that.  What is more certain is that hospitals can kill our finances.

The ‘average’ cost of hospital care is rising because the leading hospitals are front runners in figuring out how to amass market power so they can  raise prices and decrease competition.  A codeine pill that costs $20 at a hospital costs 50 cents at Rite-Aid or Walgreens.  Hospitals have “chargemasters” a price list created by each hospital, that typically has more than ten thousand entries, so almost nothing — even an aspirin, a bag of IV fluid, or a visit from a physical therapist to help a patient get out of bed — is free.  However, those lists are usually secret.

Hospital Failure

The Commonwealth Fund in its latest survey on overall health care ranked US healthcare dead last compared to 10 major countries.  Despite being worst, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, New York Times have all warned about huge, increasingly costly, health care changes.  There are enormous problems in hospitals and chances are they are going to get worse.

When it comes to health care, we may well be on our own.  The very people, institutions and establishments that  we should rely on may actually hurt rather than help our health.  Shamanic Wisdom accumulated over the millennia can fill the gap.

The Power of Theraved


One great benefit of Merri’s and my global travel has been the many great experts on healing we’ve met around the world…  China, India, Eastern Europe, the Andes, along with the USA.

One of the experts is John Douillard, DC who was a medical director at an Auyrvedic health center where Merri and I stayed every six months for many years.  John treated us and taught us numerous courses there.

The center was housed in the majestic Bayard Thayer estate designed by Guy Lowell in 1901 in Lancaster, Massachusetts with landscaping by Herbert W.C. Browne.  Bayard was one of four brothers in the Thayer family, who made their fortunes in banking and railroads during the 19th century.  This house was his spring home.

Another healing expert who crossed Merri ‘s and my path is Dr. David Perlmutter who moved to Naples Florida when Merri and I still lived there.  We had many common interests and friends who made sure we knew each other.

The article begins (bolds are mine):  Have you heard of the #1 New York Times bestseller Grain Brain? In it, Dr. David Perlmutter argues that wheat, carbs, and sugar are the brain’s “silent killers.” He recommends going completely gluten-free and using fat as your main fuel source.

1.5 million people have read his book, and while it has made quite a splash, I must respectfully disagree.

Through decades of research and practice, I have come to believe that wheat, in its natural whole grain state, is beneficial in season, and that removing digestive irritants like wheat and dairy will only further weaken our digestion, as we are treating symptoms, rather than getting to the root of digestive disturbances.

Dr. Perlmutter is still firmly against gluten, grains, and carbs and cites new research promoting a ketogenic diet. In chapter 1, he presents an unreferenced graph suggesting that our ancestors ate a diet of 75% fat and only 5% carbohydrates.

Unless you live in the Arctic Circle, I could not find any evidence from any published anthropologists that we maintained a diet of 75% fat and 5% carbohydrates. In fact, one of the most respected sources on this matter, Harvard professor Daniel Lieberman, author of “The Story of the Human Body”, cites the most current thinking that our ancestors ate 20-35% fat and 35-40% carbohydrates.

Seasonal Eating

I do believe we all went into ketogenesis during periods of famine in late winter and spring, but once the fruits, tubers, grains, and beans were ripe in the late summer, we quickly left ketosis for a higher carbohydrate diet.  I believe that seasonal eating plus time-restricted eating (intermittent fasting) based on circadian rhythms is how we got here and explains why there is positive research supporting both a high-fat ketogenic diet as well as a high-starch carbohydrate diet.

We are all designed to shift from a higher-protein, higher-fat diet in the winter to a famine-like, ketogenic diet in the spring, and then to a higher-carb (yes, grains included!) diet in the summer.

This debate between these two highly successful healers, who have both published very successful books on the subject, shows the importance of Theraveda.

Who are we to believe?

One way Merri and I seek truth from a health perspective is to study ancient health wisdom from around the world.  We found that everyone has conflicting views.  Chinese nutrition believes that pork is more digestible than beef.  Indian ayurveda favors dairy and echews potatoes as a nightshade. Popcorn is a no-no in ayurved.  Andean health disciplines hardly use dairy at all and thrive on potatoes and popcorn.

Our aim has been to look below the tactics for the most basic fundamentals that all these sciences agree on.  For example ayurved and Andean health sciences both agree on maximizing digestion and reducing toxicity, though they do it in different ways.

This is the principle of Theraveda.

Learn from others but integrate what you see and hear with your own experience and feelings to see what is best for you.   What is important is that you have a discipline that works for you.  Continually study nutrition and observe what you eat and how it makes you feel so you can continually strengthen your foundation of health. 

Be cautious of what you are and careful in what you believe.  Be especially cynical when it comes to fashion and ideas suggesting increased popularity from actions that make no sense at all.  I highly recommend that you watch the Douillard-Perlmutter debate linked at the end of this message.

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.  I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat and cancer?   Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.   Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation.  Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

The way to avoid this storage of deadly toxicity is to keep stress down, while digestion and detoxification pathways remain good.

Burn Fat to Burn Toxins

When you burn fat not primarily for weight loss, (though you will lose weight) but for purification, you can turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy.   Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins.  As the toxicity drops, the nervous system has reduced stress and will naturally burn fat instead of sugar.

Intermittent fasting is one way to get the body to burn fat.  There is a way of eating that helps reduce weight, improve energy and purify the body as it returns to a state of natural health.

This is a simple easy way to improve and restore feeling good, but works best when combined with better nutrition, moderate exercise and a purification program that helps make sure that the body is not overwhelmed with too much purification at once.

The Secret Chargemaster Revealed

Few places can destroy health and ruin a lifetime of savings faster than a hospital.  We are at risk from pocketbook surgery and the incredibly dangerous “Chargemaster”.   See below why chargemasters were normally kept secret, how a 2018 federal law requires their disclosure and how to gain protection from their abuse.

How can it be that medical costs are so high? Why is it so difficult to figure out the charge for a medical procedure?

The government in trying to help answer these questions began requiring hospitals from Jan. 1, 2019 to post their chargemaster lists.

These enormous lists of products and services ranging from a single aspirin up to a complicated surgery does little to answer these questions.

This very weak attempt to create transparency only provides data that is difficult to decipher and is mind-boggling for the consumer.

Chargemasters can include tens of thousands of items and procedures, with technical names and abbreviations that few can understand.

Plus when one goes into the hospital no one knows exactly what items and procedures will be necessary since treatment can vary widely based on the age and health and condition.

So listing the chargemaster isn’t helpful or meaningful, but simply gives hospitals one more excuse for outrageous costs… “but we listed what these costs”.

Modern American health care is under pressure.  Despite horrendous costs, the system is faltering.  At times the care is more dangerous than the illness.  For example hospitals are the worst place to have a heart attack.  The University of North Carolina, did a study and found that 40% of the patients who had hearts attacks in the hospital died before being discharged.  (The study compared that with only a 4% death rate for those who had heart attacks outside the hospital.)

Plus it was recently revealed that medical endoscopy scopes in hospitals were infecting patients with deadly drug-resistant bacteria.  The facts about this had not been previously disclosed.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that hospital-acquired infections alone kill 99,000 people each year.  Here is an even worse hospital mortality fact.

Often, what patients catch in the hospital is worse than what sent them there.  Governments and health care agencies agree  – antibiotic resistance is a “nightmare.”  An antibiotic-resistant bacteria may be spreading in more hospitals than patients know.  About one in every 25 hospitalized patients gets an infection and a 2013 report from the Journal of Patient Safety showed that medical errors are the third-leading cause of death in the country.

Along with the risk of hospital acquired illness and medical errors, the second huge threat to our well being… is health care costs, especially at hospitals.  This is because of the secrets in the chargemaster and the people who do not want us to know how much hospital costs have risen .  Motivations beyond our good health, like corporate greed, want to keep us in the dark about health care cost.

The hospital bill above is part of a story about a $110,000 infection and why hospital “chargemasters” are often secret.  This story tells how one person with resistant devastating infection ran up a $110,000 hospital bill only to find that Medicare would only pay $2,300 from treatment of infection.

Secret of the Chargemasters

Being in a hospital can kill as well as cure.  There are odds on that.  What is more certain is that hospitals can kill our finances.

The ‘average’ cost of hospital care is rising because the leading hospitals are front runners in figuring out how to amass market power so they can  raise prices and decrease competition.  A codeine pill that costs $20 at a hospital costs 50 cents at Rite-Aid or Walgreens.  Hospitals have “chargemasters” a price list created by each hospital, that typically has more than ten thousand entries, so almost nothing — even an aspirin, a bag of IV fluid, or a visit from a physical therapist to help a patient get out of bed — is free.  However, those lists are usually secret.

Hospital Failure

The Commonwealth Fund in its latest survey on overall health care ranked US healthcare dead last compared to 10 major countries.  Despite being worst, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, New York Times have all warned about huge, increasingly costly, health care changes.  There are enormous problems in hospitals and chances are they are going to get worse.

When it comes to health care, we may well be on our own.  The very people, institutions and establishments that  we should rely on may actually hurt rather than help our health.  Shamanic Wisdom accumulated over the millennia can fill the gap.

Spooky Thought on Health & Wealth


Here is a thought that is so spooky it would be funny if the problem were not so serious.

Last week’s message Ecuador Shamanic Pumpkin Health Tip looked at how Ecuador shamans use pumpkins to help improve health.  Then the post shared ayurvedic nutritional ideas on why we should eat pumpkin during the autumn and winter.

The next day a friend who has great experience in ayurved wrote:  Gary, when the Europeans came to N. America originally they found many of the natives suffering from severe psoriasis. The natives had many remedies for this most of which involved tar in some way or another.  Pumpkins and winter squashes in general are said in Ayurveda to be the source of most of the serious skin diseases people suffer from and one of the ways to remedy those skin diseases is simply to stop eating them. We don’t have them in our diet at all and haven’t had for 15 years.

When I pointed out that winter squashes and pumpkin were recommended for winter eating by an ayurvedic physician who has been very helpful to Merri and me over the past 20 years, our friend replied:  That Doctor’s learning is from the books and not from a family tradition.  The simple fact remains, the winter squashes, and pumpkin in particular, produce skin disease.

I did not bother to point out that the Ecuador shaman we worked with, who definitely used pumpkins in his nutritional plan was also a healer of many generations.  His father and grandfather, etc.  were great healers as well and this yatchak had been taken at age five and apprenticed to other great healers up and down North, Central and South America.

Needless to say this message is not about pumpkins, its about the dangers of trying to process overwhelming amounts of data.

Getting too much input can be worse than not having enough.

The Natural Health Crunch

Expanded horizons should bring expanded ability and wisdom.  Wouldn’t you think?  Yet it is known that a foible of the human mind is its reluctance to make too many decisions.   A choice of two chocolates in a box is better than one. Six choices better than two.  When there are more than six or seven choices the satisfaction of the chocolate decision grows less rather than more.  Confusion overcomes options.

The mental juggling is even worse if you like all of the chocolate choices given.

So too with the process of natural health.  Believe strongly in one proven health system, use it and you’ll have good natural health.  In fact there is evidence that the faith in a natural health system is as important as the system itself.

Knowing two systems can confuse and create doubt in both systems.  Know three disciplines and the confusion can grow exponentially.

Anita Moorjani, best selling author, explains this problem in her book “Dying To Be Me“.

After fighting cancer for almost four years, the cancer in her body was at stage 4B (throughout her body).  Her weight was down to 90 pounds.  Overwhelmed by malignant cells, her organs began shutting down.  In a coma, she entered into an extraordinary near-death experience where she realized her inherent worth . . . and the actual cause of her disease. Upon regaining consciousness, Anita found that her condition had improved so rapidly that she was able to be released from the hospital within weeks . . . without a trace of cancer in her body though medical doctors with experience in this field said, “Whichever way I look at it, you should be dead!”

The book tells how she was raised in Hong Kong by her Indian parents, cared for by a Cantonese nanny and given a British education. She is multilingual speaking English, Cantonese, and an Indian dialect.  Yet when diagnosed with cancer in April 2002 she returned to her Indian roots and after six months of living a pure ayurvedic life with a guru, she felt cured.

Upon returning to Hong Kong she began suffering death by doubt as exposure to multi cultural health sciences, that all worked differently, eroded the belief in her cure and confused her health.

Moorjani wrote: When I returned home to Hong Kong at first many people remarked on how well I looked.  I certainly felt better than I had, both physically and emotionally, but my jubilation was short lived. It wasn’t long before others wanted to know what I had been doing for so long in India and how I’d healed.

When I told them about my ayurvedic regimen, however, I received mainly fear-based and negative responses. These were well meaning people who genuinely cared about me and my well-being, and they were skeptical about my choices, which is why they had such a great impact on me. Most believed that cancer couldn’t be treated in that way, and I slowly felt the doubts and fear creeping back into my psyche as I defended my position.

I attempted to understand Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), since it’s commonly practiced here. However because it conflicted so much with my Ayurveda, I was left feeling very confused.

To make matters worse, I turned to Western naturopathy for help because I was so bewildered.  This not only added to the confusion, but also increased my fears. I was getting conflicting information from every discipline.

So I became very stressed about food and was afraid of eating almost anything. I didn’t know what was good for me and what wasn’t, because each system of healing espoused a different truth ad they all conflicted with one another. This confusion only added to my already overwhelming ears. And as the terror tightly griped me in its vice once more, I watched helplessly as my health rapidly deteriorated.

Confusion can ruin investing as well.

Too much input about markets, stock, economies and all the bad news that floods the daily media is overwhelming.   We each need a simple strategy that we understand and that we stick to.

The book Too Big to Fail by Andrew Sorkin explains how Warren Buffett  does not research by maintaining a database of up-to-the-quarter estimates, etc.   So much data would dilute and distract from the deep focus on the areas he does research.

Buffet’s research is  from reading publicly available documentation, introductions from trusted lieutenants, and personally meeting the leaders of his investment prospects.  Buffett keeps it simple and understandable to him.

Whether you are thinking about pumpkins, investments or Presidential candidates (now that’s a real spooky thought!), limit your input to what you understand, what you are passionate about and what makes you feel good.  If the 11 oclock news leaves you feeling sleepless, don’t turn it on.  Tonight its okay to be spooky, but there is no reason to get spooked every night.

Gain From the Volatility of the Next Four Years

However America’s politics turn out, one thing is sure.  There will be volatility in stock markets during the next four years.

The first reason markets will bounce has nothing to do with politics or policies.   The market’s downward shift is simply due regardless of the party or the person in office.

Second the new politics will create an uncertain era. Everyone is shaken whether they are pleased with the election or not and nothing frightens markets like uncertainty.

Third we’ll see rising interest rates over the next 48 months. This will push markets down.

Despite these pitfalls, there is a way to profit using the downtrends  to pick up good value shares.

During nearly five decades of global investing I have noticed found that good value strategies increase through bull markets and bear, through good presidents and bad.  The steps to take are simple.

The first tactic is to seek safety before profit.

We can look at Warren Buffett’s investing strategy as an example.  Buffett success is talked about a lot, but rarely does anyone explain how he make so much money.  That was the fact until some researchers really stripped his operation bare.  They looked at everything and learned the deepest of Buffett’s wealth management secrets.  Fortunately they published all in a research paper at Yale University’s website. that reveals important truths about extending wealth.

This research shows that the stocks Buffett chooses are safe (with low beta and low volatility), cheap (value stocks with low price – to – book ratios), and high quality (stocks of companies that are profitable, stable, growing, and with high payout ratios).

The second tactic is to maintain staying power.  At times Buffet’s portfolio has fallen, but he has been willing and able to wait long periods for the value to reveal itself and prices to recover.

This chart based on a 45 year portfolio study shows that holding a diversified good value portfolio (based on a  good value strategy) for 13 month’s time, increases the probability of outperformance to 70%.  However those who can hold the portfolio for five years gain a 88% probability of beating the bellwether in the market and after ten years the probability increases to 97.5%.  Time is your friend when you use a good value strategy.  The longer you can hold onto a well balanced good value portfolio the better the odds of outstanding success.

The Buffett strategy integrates time and value for safety and profit.

A third tactic is using limited leveraging, tactic in the strategy boosts profit.  Buffett leverages his portfolio at a ratio of approximately 1.6 to 1.   The Yale published research paper shows the leveraging methods used by Warren Buffett to amass his $50 billion fortune.  The researchers found that the returns from Buffett’s investment company, Berkshire Hathaway, far outweighed those achieved by any rival that has operated for 30 years or more.  The research shows that neither luck nor magic are involved.  Instead, the paper shows that Buffet’s success hinges on using leverage at the rate of 1.6.

To sum up the strategy, Buffet uses limited leverage to invest in large purchases of “cheap, safe, quality stocks”.   He limits leverage so he can hold on for very long periods of time, surviving rough periods where others might have been forced into a fire sale or a career shift.

Stated in another way buffet uses logic (buy good value) to have the conviction, wherewithal, and skill to invest with leverage over many decades.

Leverage

Pi also explains when leverage provides extra potential without undo risk.  For example in 1986 I issued a report called “The Silver Dip” that showed how to borrow 12,000 British pounds (at almost 1.6 to 1 dollars per pound the loan created US$18,600) and use the loan to buy 3835 ounces of silver at around US$4.85 an ounce.

Silver had crashed, I mean really crashed from $48 per ounce.  As prices decreased from early 1983 into 1986, total supply had fallen to 449.7 million ounces in 1986.  Mine production was restricted by the low prices at this time, with silver reaching a low for this period of $4.85 in May 1986.  Secondary recovery also was constricted by these low prices.

Then silver’s price skyrocketed to over $11 an ounce within a year.  The $18,600 loan was now worth $42,185.

The loan was in pounds and in May 1986 the dollar pound rate was 1.55 dollars per pound.  So the 12,000 pound loan purchased $18,600 of silver.  The pound then crashed to 1.40 dollars per silver.  The loan could be paid off for $13,285 immediately creating an extra $5,314 profit.  The profit grew to $47,499 in just a year.

Conditions for the silver dip have returned.  The availability of low cost loans and silver are at an all time low.  The price of silver has crashed from nearly $50 an ounce to below $14 as did shares of the iShares Silver ETF (SLV).
