Adventure Micro Business

We can all have an adventure in a micro business.

gary-scott-seminar-images

Writer’s Camp delegates having a deep woods adventure at our Blue Ridge seminar hall.

We can all have an adventure in business when we turn our passion into profit because an adventure is any activity that excites us when we get out of bed.

Flying can be an adventure to some… hiking a mountain for others… racing a motor bike for some… playing baseball in the big leagues for a few…  while watching a garden explode into richness is exciting for others.

We can understand how to have an adventure in business if we first  understand the parts of the word Ad – Venture.

There are numerous definitions of adventure at Dictionary.com but the one I like is:  1. an exciting or very unusual experience.

If we look more deeply at the word at the Online Etymology website  which views the word in its components we find ad is “the prefix expressing direction toward or in addition to, from ‘to, toward in space or time;’and that venture’s origins are from venire “to come” (see venue).

An adventure can be looked at as the process of “moving towards a place”.   What makes the opportunity for adventure in business exciting is that we each can choose the place we move towards and if that place expands our horizons and fulfills us then we gain a thrill.

Merri and I love the seminar events tour business because we can share adventures with like minded souls as we all move toward an exciting place.

In years and decades past this has led us to many place we have enjoyed with our friends. To name a few… London – Geneva – Luxembourg – Paris – Vienna – Hungary – Czech Republic – Edinburgh – Copenhagen – Helsinki – Hong Kong – Isle of Man – Mexico – Spain, Dominican Republic – Belize – Bahamas – Jamaica – Bermuda – Aruba – Nevis – BVI – Puerto Rico – USVI as well as across Ecuador, Canada and the USA.

These are some of the places where we have conducted or participated in seminars and we have enjoyed this process so much that last year we created a beta program to develop a course entitled “Event – Full Business” on how to create a micro business conducting seminars, tours and events.

During the year we created 17 core lessons and are now expanding the second phase of the course in two ways.   First we have trained a dozen teachers to conduct Super Thinking + Spanish events around the world.   Second, I have asked the original beta subscribers for their input and questions.

Here is an excerpt from lesson #18 of Event – Full Business that is based on a question from a subscriber who wrote:

In my quest for knowledge, my first question would be WHERE DO I START?

First,  I would think logically to include pertinent information such as step by step planning a seminar  or a workshop to include:

Structuring the goals.

Deciding who will attend.

Choosing the location.

Creating an agenda, and  developing a follow up plan.

Here is the excerpt: There is a seven step process we can all use in our events business.   This process works whether we have an existing career, a business or are retired.

The first step is to get a clear idea or vision of our dream.  This is sometimes harder to achieve than it seems. We are so deluged with false ideals from Washington, Wall Street, Madison Avenue, etc. that we have to stop and really take stock.

This inner search will lead us to an ideal that begins the second step.

The second step is developing enthusiasm. How can we be anything but enthusiastic about finally fulfilling our deepest dreams?  The enthusiasm leads to the third step;

The third step is gaining an education. We need to find out everything we can about our idea.  The internet can help us get started but there are few better sources of contacts and information than experience.   So get involved personally.  To succeed you must become or have a real expert in the product or service or place that will be the focus of the event you conduct.

Fourth, this educational process allows us to develop an intelligent, focused business plan we can act upon.   To figure out what the costs of the event will be… what the delegates who attend will need and such.

The fifth step is action.  Market your seminar, tour or event.   This brings us the experience.

Reflecting on the experience is the sixth step. Financially you will have gained a financial loss or profit.  You will always profit from increased knowledge which creates the seventh step, more ideas.

The seventh step is to start the entire cycle all over again.   The experience creates new ideas, enhancing enthusiasm, more education, the next action, increased experience, financial profit and again more new ideas.   Each time you repeat the cycle you’ll be better at the process… more knowledgeable and able to expand.

This seven step cycle is a perfect way to start small and grow. The process may take days, weeks, months or years, but the moment you begin you’ll start moving into an avenue of affluence where you are excited about the adventure ahead.

The foundation of the evolutionary business process is to use the Golden Rule of Simplicity which is “Follow your dream because you and your wants, needs and desires represent a market”.   Your desires are the initial seeds of your market research.  If you have a passion for something so do others and it will be easier to identify what these others want (in terms of your event) once you know what you desire.  This identification will make it easier to spread the word.

Word of mouth still reigns as the number one marketing tool to create a buzz about an event.  Technology however has made it easier and allowed the creation of the “Niche Buzz”.

You want to clarify your passion, build an event around this and create a “Niche Buzz” so others know about the event.

When advertising was ruled by broadcast… the appeal of an event had to be large enough to cover the cost of marketing to a large audience.   This made it more difficult to create micro events.   It was hard to zero in low cost marketing to create the initial buzz because broadcast was never discriminating.

The Marketing Problem with Broadcast

Two great challenges in good events marketing are getting the sales message to those interested and getting the sales message to those who are ready to act.

For example if you are marketing an event to hand weavers (as in the case study below) you would not want to advertise in the Wall Street Journal.  WSJ has about 2 million readers.  Some may be hand weavers but not many so if there are even a thousand… ad money spent reach reaching 1,999,000 readers is wasted.

The idea behind broadcast is sending the same one message to millions of potential buyers.  The idea behind broadband is to send millions of different messages to one buyer each.

A conductor of a hand weaving event would be better to advertise to members of the Handweavers Guild which has only thousands of members and each is far more likely to be interested in hand weaving.

Yet that event conductor will want to refine the advertising to current members who might be interested in and able able to afford paying for to attend an event.

Modern marketing technology makes it much easier to reach and engage only those interested.

This allows an event conductor to create a niche buzz… to get word of mouth going through the small, well defined group of people who are the best potential delegates for any specific and perhaps very narrow event.

Case Study in Fabric Art Events in Ecuador

Textiles are the number one specialty in Ecuador.   They use fabric is so many ways.  Here is a shot of a rich tapestry we brought back from Ecuador.

Original art in the US is now so expensive that this type of fabric art can be sold for excellent markups so we viewed many textile factories on import export tours.

The artist was a weaver who belonged to an association of hand loom weavers.

He began exporting special wools and selling them to other members of the association.

Then he had the idea to bring other weavers to Ecuador.

ecuador-Thanksgiving

Export tour in Otavalo, Ecuador.

He organized a free Ecuador holiday trek for early December.   His aim was to create a situation where the savings on Christmas shopping could be enough to offset the cost of the trip to Ecuador.

ecuador-Thanksgiving

Wool scarves.

ecuador-Thanksgiving

Cotton… wool.

ecuador-Thanksgiving

Ponchos.

The motivation was to earn extra income with his passion which was hand weaving.   The idea was to find a source of fabrics he could sell to other weavers.   His trip to Ecuador increased his enthusiasm.  He began to study the ways that cotton and wool were processed and priced by the indigenous weavers in Ecuador. He combined this knowledge with the existing US experiences of weaving he already had.   This helped him learn the contrast between alternatives… prices… and qualities of hand dyed wool in the USA and in Ecuador.

His next step was to gain experience on the export tour…. to understand the modes of transport… the options where a group could stay, and meet and to establish relationships with the processors of cotton and wool so he could bring a group.

Then he took action and began to market.

For most of us the Golden Rule of Simplicity is paramount.   If the development of the event is costly… time consuming…  needing a large staff… or expensive process to begin… the event simply will not happen. Most event conductors are not ready in the beginning to market or pull off a large event.  They must make the process simple, easy and inexpensive.   The Golden Rule of simplicity is that…  simple, easy and inexpensive.

The foundation of the evolutionary business process is to use the Golden Rule of Simplicity  (we can’t repeat this too much) which is “Follow your dream because you and your wants, needs and desires represent a market”.

You may have some questions. In fact, you should.  Fire away as I am anxious to see in which ways your curiosity of this process is aroused.

GARY-SCOTT-SEMINAR-IMAGES

Delegates at a recent writer’s camp… one of the events we conduct at our North Carolina seminar center.

Many readers of this site crave freedom… and perhaps adventure.  At least they desire the ability to get out of the rat race.   They want  to travel… spend time… live… laugh or love in more than just one place… and they want the places to be ones they choose.

How can one live such a lifestyle… where a suitcase is a necessary and vital friend?

There are few people more capable of answering this question than… Merri and me.

For 44 years (from May 1968) we have been paid to travel and live exactly where we have wanted to be… because we have had an events business conducting seminars, courses and tours.

Our seminar/conference/ events business has allowed us to visit and to live almost anywhere we have chosen… or not.

Sometimes we have incredible adventures.

gary-merri-scott-llanganatis

Here I am with Merri and an Ecuadorian Yatchak deep in the Llanganatis jungle creating a shamanic tour.

However when we want to stay at home we can also do so.  One does not have to travel to have an events business.

gary-scott-semainsr

Here I am (in brown shirt) speaking to a delegate that we conducted at our Florida home.

We even built a…

little-horse-creek

seminar hall on Little Horse Creek so we can stay in the mountains when we desire… and still conduct events.

Here is one of the small groups at a retreat we conducted in the seminar hall.

gary-scott

Most owners of an events business do not do this much, however!  Lesson Two of a new course we have created called “Event – Full Business” shows how to start small and gradually build a larger events business (if that is your desire) as we have done.

We have conducted events as small as two delegates and some with over 400 so…

ecuador-exports

we know the events business inside and out… large and small. Here Merri and I are speaking to over 400 + people in Quito, Ecuador.

There are innumerable fringe benefits to an events business. For example almost all of our global travel has been tax deductible for all these years.

The pay has certainly not been bad either.  As you’ll see below, one time we earned  $142,260 in three days.  In another instance we earned over $135,000 in two days.  Once our earnings exceeded $200,000 in just three days.

Yet the income has been a small part of this adventure. The expanded horizons… the people we have met… the adventures we have shared… the tens of thousands of delegates we have enjoyed and hopefully helped…. the poor we have served… the freedom we have felt… to be able to go where we desire and come home, when we desire, with more than when we left.

These facts have dramatically enriched our lives….and we hope others.

Now we would like to help improve your lifestyle as well… if… earning with a seminar, tour events business appeals to you.

We have conducted seminars or events or spoken at them in… (alphabetical order)  Australia, Bahamas, Belgium, Belize, Canada, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, England, Ecuador, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary (before the Iron Curtain came down), Indonesia, Isle of Man, Jamaica, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands,  Panama, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Scotland, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand and at one time or another most of the United States and more.

There is a possibility that  Merri and I know more about conducting events than 99.9% of the people in the world and because so many have asked… we have finally decided to provide an online correspondence course on how to create your own seminar, tour or events business.

We call this brand new emailed correspondence course:  “Event – Full Business”.

We have completed 17 lessons and to give you a better idea about “Event – Full Business”. The Introduction Lesson is below.

I am ready to send you the Intro and Lesson #1 of “Event – Full Business” and am ready to accept your enrollment of students in our beta program.

See how to benefit from this first stage in our course development after you have studied this introduction.

“Event- Full Business” – How to Profit Conducting Seminars, Workshops & Tours

Sometime about 24 years ago…. around 1987:

naigara-falls

Photo from www.thetoptensite.com/Niagara_Falls.html

A white water symphony… harmonized in crushed octaves.  A melody amplified by nature’s power and white water sound conducted in the fresh air amphitheater that is Niagara Falls.

Merri and I walked arm and arm along the Canadian side of the falls…overwhelmed by its strength and its spectacular beauty.  We had driven from our home in North Carolina to conduct an International Investing and Business Conference… one of the largest of our own seminars that we had ever conducted…380 people.

We arrived a day early… took a suite with a large red garden tub… soaked after the long journey and then enjoyed the wonder of this natural phenomenon…Niagara Falls.

This was the day to enjoy because the next three we would be busy, very busy… with stress-of course. Marketing had shot past our expectations and this was a large crowd. We would work hard yet we would also earn approximately $142,260 for three days work. Actually more. You’ll see why below.

We have earned in many ways since then… until now… 24 + years later.

This morning a reader enrolled in our 2011 International Club allowing him to attend all the seminars we’ll conduct for the next year.

He wrote: “Hi Merri. I am looking forward to meeting you both again. Had met in Niagara in the 1980s. Thanks.”

Obviously, something we did for this client 25 years ago brought this extra business to us now.

This fact stimulated me to get on with this course which I have been outlining for some time. A seminar, conference, tour business not only creates unusual profit opportunity now… but when a seminar business is properly run, it can create income for a lifetime!

This course shows how Merri I and have created riches and a lifestyle beyond our wildest imagination and shares steps you can take to create a profitable and fun business conducting seminars, workshops conferences and tours wherever and whenever you like.  (Or perhaps you want to conduct seminars online or live or with a video sent through the internet.)

When it comes to conducting seminars, courses and tours, there are few people with more experience than Merri and me. Over 43 years we have organized, marketed and conducted thousands of tours for tens of thousands of people in dozens and dozens of countries (even behind the Iron Curtain).

This course shares how we have done this… what we did right… what we did wrong… how you can get started and what you can do much better than we have.

Here are the initial lessons in an outlined that I am writing.

#1: How to earn millions from seminars, courses and tours. See how we have earned as much as $200,000 for three days’ work. (Once $135,000 in two days.)

#2: How to build a seminar business. See the one day Washington-Atlanta-San Francisco system that helped our courses evolve and how to use this approach to help your teaching grow.

#3: When and when not to use other speakers. Seminars for speakers… a way to get it all out as your bank accounts gets it all in.

#4: How to use other speakers. Gain the key to the room and the people within. Why the golden pen is mightier than a glib tongue, the sword and the overloaded brain.

#5: Dealing with hotels/locations. Why the marketing does not talk to catering who will not communicate with accounting and the mess this could mean for you. How to choose… arrange and survive the hotel. Forget the $11,314 coffee bill… for swill.

#6: Scheduling seminars. Magic dates and times for marketing… how far in advance to market and seminar death dates to avoid.

#7: Creating a back end business. How Merri made $12,936 dollars at a seminar in 37 minutes by just standing still.

#8: Three types of courses… delegate driven… speaker driven… third party driven.

#9: The importance of strategic partnerships for added wealth.

#10: How to market seminars, courses & tours.

#11: List building.

#12: Alternative seminar and course location options.

#13: The benefits of both big seminars and small courses.

#14: How to survive the dreaded problems: What to do when enrollments are low. Handling the heckler, the takeover and the cell phone. When the hotel fails. Surviving speaker no shows and all of those types of things!

#15: How to enhance your other businesses with seminars.

We welcome you to “Event – Full Business”.

We’ll be doing all we can to help you create your riches and a lifestyle beyond your wildest dreams with an events business so your life and income can be filled by events and event full!

The first lesson will look at seminars, workshops conferences, exhibitions, tours, various events, how they differ and their strengths and weaknesses so you can begin to zero in on what would be best for you.

This is the introduction.  We invite you to become a subscriber to this new online correspondence course, “Event – Full Business”.

We’ll send you the first lessons immediately and each lesson as it is completed.  Plus we’ll ask for your input.

Never Ending Story – Save Next Year

The world is changing at an ever faster pace, so no course on business remains current for long.  Our events business evolves every year.  Consequently our courses never end… they evolve with our business.

Throughout the year we update, rewrite and expand our courses… adding new tips and share real time what we have learned and what we are still learning.  We show the changes we are making… how and why… in our business through the year.

This continual update is like an Alumni Club. Imagine attending Harvard. After graduation you stay in touch with your fellow students. You share. You help one another. You network and stay up to date. Our online business courses work in the same way so we… all our subscribers… and you,  help the courses evolve and keep pace with new ideas, new technology, innovation and changes in the market place.

So you gain more than just savings as a beta subscriber.  The extra added benefit is that you help direct the creation of the course and make it more useful from the very beginning.

Then year after year… as long as you like… you stay in touch with us, our webmaster and with the other subscribers from around the world though a special password protected site.

The first 17 lessons above are set and will be sent regularly. Your questions, comments, actions, successes and failures will help expand and direct this course over the next year.

Ecuador Exports Update

Ecuador exports include arts and crafts from the Cotacachi and Otavalo area.

Our upcoming Ecuador exports tour visits these areas as well as San Antonio and Peguche briefly so delegates can learn possibilities for starting a business exporting the Ecuador arts and crafts from these areas.

During the Ecuador export tours delegates meet  little known producers in Cotacachi and close by,

Here a sculptor at the Fuentes Brothers workshop delicately chisels a Christs head.

The same skills used to carve amazing artistic pieces are also applied to more practical products such as this furniture below.

We visit the workshop of Jose Cotacachi. A delegate poses alongside Jose after purchasing the center wall hanging.

Since the Ecuador export tour does not have time to visit all the producers we invite them to put on an exhibition at Meson de las Flores.

When word gets out that an exposition artisans come from all parts of the area.

Here are a few who regularly appear.

The crafts people also play and dance during supper – using the very same hand made instruments, such as charangos, a small guitar-like instrument, which used to be made using armadillo shells.

Now they are no longer made like that here in Ecuador because armadillos are an endangered species.

Our Ecuador export tour helps those interested in creating earning abroad and is our first tour of 2010.

You may well wonder why I would make such an offer and ask why the cost is so low? Let me answer this question frankly and from the heart.

First, it helps us do a better job for you. We feel greatly enriched when we can really help our clients improve their lives. We have learned through years of experience the best way to do this is to meet with you regularly. We can best help you learn how to improve your health and wealth through continual expansion of knowledge.

Second, we gain enormous fulfillment from the many friendships we form through the years. Our friends have enriched our lives tremendously. Let me explain this in more detail.

As a member, you will be part of our international family that meets intensively over the next year to examine ways we can make our lives better. Our goal is beyond just having money. Our goal is to have quantum wealth… good health… wealth and fulfillment through service.

Though I give all course delegates my very best, I cannot help but to do a better job for those who come again and again. As we meet often; your particular wants, needs and desires become clear, and it is easier for me to point you in the right direction.

Another phenomenon is that repeat delegates help each other! They get to know one another, help each other learn, share their insights, make contacts and gain more wealth.

Out associates in Ecuador, are experienced business people who live or work and conduct our real estate and export courses.  They can also act as your local backup for the business.

Lifestyle for Two. There is more! I have learned at my courses that many repeat delegates were couples.

We want couples! As a member of the program, you are entitled to bring another person to every single course or tour. The cost for that extra person will be ZERO!  You can bring whomever you wish. Bring your spouse, a friend, son or daughter, partner, accountant, adviser. You can bring the same person each time or a different person, whomever you choose to accompany you. (Accommodations and air fares relating to the courses are not included for members, delegates or their guests.)

Won’t you join us in this exciting club and share Merri’s and my lifestyle for the next year? We look forward to seeing you at as many courses as possible and sharing this wonderful world of abundance and well being with you!

Cotacachi Shamanic Tour

We are repeating our Beyond Logic & Cotacachi Shamanic Tour this December 6, 7 and 8, 2009 because the most successful thoughts come from Beyond Logic.

This may be why the Beyond Logic & Cotacachi Shamanic tour has been one of the must successful of our 2009 tours. Due to this demand we are repeating this course… plus adding optional Andean real estate plus a free Christmas shopping extension for December 2009.

The Ecuadorian shamanic thinking process can help us learn how to advance and prosper during this economic downturn.   Three shamanic lessons below show why. These lessons are outlined in a moment.

First may I introduce the course “Beyond Logic” conducted by Blaine Watson this December 2009.

Because the last Beyond Logic course was one of our most popular this year, we have added a three day ‘Beyond Logic” Course to be conducted in Cotacachi December 6, 7 and 8, 2009.   Ecuador Andean and coastal real estate tours will follow (more on this in a moment).

The first two days will be conducted by Blaine Watson. Here he is conducting a course here in North Carolina. He is in our teaching kitchen because nutrition is part of the course.

ecuador-shaman

Blaine’s portion of the program includes a personal reading (one per single or couple – a second reading is extra) based on your time, day and place of birth. We’ll get your birth time in advance so he can bring your chart with him. You’ll have your reading either after the course or later by phone.

Here is the course schedule.

Day One. Sunday…Dec. 6, 2009 – Blaine Watson

A detailed description of the 12 signs, the 9 planets and their significations and the 12 houses, how they come into being and the significations of each one, as the basis for interpreting the horoscope and making predictions.

Day Two. Monday…Dec. 7, 2009 – Blaine Watson

In-depth analysis of the of the planets and how to interpret and predict from their placements in the 12 signs and the 12 houses.

Day Three. Tuesday…Dec. 8, 2009 – Quantum Lessons from the Yatchaks. Delegates will visit a sacred valley near our village for a shamanic mingo…just beyond this field.

ecuador-shaman

We’ll hike in (but can also bring those who desire to come by truck) here…

ecuador-shaman

Here is a shot I took of Merri and Don Jose when we hiked in on a previous Mingo.

ecuador-mingo-trip

We’ll reach this grotto where the water springs from the cave…

the color of gold.

Shaman Don Jose will conduct a purification for those who choose to have it.

as I am doing here.

You can enroll in Beyond Logic here.

Here are the three shamanic lessons.

Recessions and depressions destroy many investors and businesses. Yet these times of cleansing are also the breeding ground for the next group of extreme rich.

Why do some succeed when so many fail?

They have different ways of thinking…gaining energy and seeing beyond the accepted logic.

No one can see the future. It is hard to be energetic and forward moving in tough times. Perhaps this is why only a few become rich and healthy.

The thought process, processing knowledge and natural health have always fascinated me as have the legends of Old Ones the “Abuelos” who live high in the Andes hiding sacred knowledge for longevity, high energy and success.

Merri and I were so intrigued that we bought Hacienda Rosaspamba, high in the Andes and lived with a Taita Yatchak and his apprentices to learn more.

Here is the hacienda and the view we enjoyed each day as we rose.

Ecuador-hacienda

The Taita Yatchak invited Merri and me to hike into the mists and clouds of the Llanganatis, the sacred valley, which legends say contain hidden Incan gold. I suspect the gold is golden knowledge…not the yellow metal!

To find out, and learn more on how to think for true success…in health and wealth, we invited friends, two MDs and a Sanskrit scholar to hike in with us. Here we are, on top of the world, starting that trek.

ecuador-shaman

The first shamanic lesson was to trust our inner vision. The picture below shows Merri and me with Dr. Jay Glaser an MD, Ayurvedic physician and Sanskrit scholar overlooking the sacred LLanganatis Valley.

Here is how we learned this lesson. The yatchak put us on a path like above. Told us to look ahead. Then close our eyes and walk the path. “Trust your inner vision,” he said.

ecuador-shaman

Here we are with the Yatchak in the jungle during that hike.

picture one

The second shamanic lesson was to purify oneself from the outside in and the inside out at the same time. Be pure in eating, action and thought. Always keep cleansing…mind and body.

For example, we stayed in an open air hut during our time in the LLanganatis. The mists there have negative ions that neutralize free radicals in the skin.

Here we are with the Yatchak and our friends at the hut.

ecador-shaman-entire-crew

We brought a Sanskrit expert because the Andean language is based on Sanskrit, a language from India. What made this tidbit special was that we were already studying Ayurved, the Indian science of life…health…pure thought.

We learned for example that the name “Llanganatis” is linked to Indian philosophy. Llanganatis means “Repeated Sacred Action” (the Sanskrit word is Yagya). This led us to a third shamanic lesson…”See beyond logic”.

This helped Merri and me understand how to use Vedic Astrology to see a bigger picture beyond logic. The Indians were able to maintain their ancient wisdom in a more refined and usable way than the Andeans, mainly because the Spanish destroyed most of the Andean Quipos, (knotted cords of different colors used by the ancients to store knowledge).

We learned to integrate the wisdom we have gained from India and the Andes to think and act Beyond Logic.

Our astrologer is Blaine Watson who has been an incredible help when it comes to making decisions that we cannot process just with logic. Blaine is an expert in the wisdom from India and Ayurved.

For example, our daughter Elle graduated from University in London with a degree in dramatic arts. Her question to Merri and me was “Should I go for a career in singing or go on and get a teacher’s certificate in Physical Education?” (She was a superb athlete as well as an aspiring singer.)

We all agreed that becoming a singer was a long shot. Teaching was safe. But we knew that her passion was to shoot for being a star. How would she feel in later life if she didn’t try?

We had Blaine check her Vedic chart. He knew nothing about Elle but said at that time she had just moved into a cycle for three years when her best thing would be the performing arts, entertaining, etc. That was enough to convince us. “Go for it”, we said and encouraged her.

Within a week she was picked as a backup singer with Modern Romance, a popular English rock group with many top hits in the UK including the theme song from the movie, “Shrek”.

Her first gig was before 4,000 fans! In the ensuing year she met many of her rock star heroes as work associates. This was an incredible experience for her and led her to buying a franchised performing arts school called Stagecoach, where see now earns hundreds of thousands a year.

May I say with due respect that Eleanor is the last child that we ever thought would be a business woman. No logic could have shown us this. Yet she approached this business with incredible discipline and dramatically expanded the school. In her first year her profits were in six figures. Her second year took her well into six figures. Today at 27 she lives in a very expensive home on the River Thames. She has a new car, new kitchen, everything she wants and an income in the top 5% of the world.

Her success has been beyond logic!

Yet we supported this success based on the realization that every moment there are possibilities that our logic just cannot see. Vedic Astrology helped us tap into a bigger picture.

The inability to measure the results of astrology used to bother me enormously until years ago I read an article about Aristotle Onassis, the ultra rich Greek shipping magnate. He gave the secret of being a billionaire that helped me look beyond my logic. “Certainly one does not need an astrologist to become a millionaire.” Then he quickly added that “to become a billionaire, it is essential.”

Onassis’ statement really struck a chord with me as my many years of residence in Hong Kong had exposed me to many businessmen who looked beyond logic. I heeded the astrological advice because the Chinese businessmen are often considered superstitious due to their belief in astrology. Some might consider their sight beyond logic, offbeat and unreal, but there were more billionaires per capita in Hong Kong than anywhere else in the world!

The more I thought about this, the more it made sense. To make billions one has to take enormous risks and see a big picture far into an invisible future.

We all have to make some decisions based on events we cannot totally predict, but successful billionaires make huge decisions based on enormous unknowns. It requires incredible faith to take incredible risks. None of us can see the whole picture but Astrology, albeit vaguely, helps us see the biggest picture of all.

During economic downturns, times seem even more uncertain. Previous history is of little use so these deeper, more subtle ways of processing information become even more important.

This may be why one of our most popular courses we offer is conducted by Blaine Watson, our Vedic Astrologer. Many of our readers also use Blaine and rave about him.

During times of contraction…those who profit most are those who expand…but in the correct way. This course “Beyond Logic” can help you think better, have more energy, natural health and purity to pursue your inner vision, that sees a bigger picture of health and wealth for all.

I invite you to join Blaine Watson for

New Quito Ecuador Airport

A new Quito Ecuador airport is scheduled to open in 2010 to replace the current Mariscal Sucre airport.

On the subject of Mariscal Sucre airport, this is one of the nicest emerging market airports Merri and I have ever used. Clean carpeted jetports take you to a shiny marble clad, rose decorated immigration area where the officers politely and efficiently welcome you to Ecuador . Baggage arrives promptly and customs rarely looks at your baggage. We are often from the deplane to our waiting van in less than 30 minutes. The entire process is quiet, well organized and the baggage handlers treat us well.

The new nearly 4,000 acre airport scheduled to open next year we expect to be even better. Because it is about 45 minutes closer to Cotacachi, this adds some great opportunity for real estate in our area now. We look at this in our real estate tour. See below.

The new airport scheduled to open in 2010 is about 15 miles east of Quito and that much closer (about an hour of travel saved) to our province. This airport will sit at about 7,500 feet altitude compared to Quito ’s 9,500. This lower altitude and elimination of noise reduction procedures (due to being away from town) means larger loads can arrive and take off.

Learn more about the new Quito airport here.

On all our tours, we meet all delegates arriving the day before the tour when they arrive at Quito airport. We hope to meet you in Ecuador!

Self Publishing Gift

A self publishing delegate sent the note below… a gift to me because I love seeing people have success… especially when they have  attended one of our courses.

internet-business-idea

Spring on our farm.  As we adjust to the seasons, we must adjust to changing economies and times.

See how Todd Smith’s note below can be a gift to you as well.

In October 2005, I attended Gary’s “Self-Fulfilled” course on how to become a self-publisher.  At the time, I was a successful wedding photographer in Richmond, VA, and while I enjoyed my work, it didn’t completely fulfill my creative desires.  There are things you never get to express when you are working for clients.

I wanted to create a photography job that would fulfill me as an artist and give me the potential to scale my income instead of working by the job as a wedding photographer.  In the end, there are only 52 weekends a year, which means there was a cap on my wedding income potential.

Gary’s course was packed with knowledge and practical tips of how he has created and run a self-publishing business for decades.  I loved his simple description of self-publishing:  “to inform.”  He encourages his students to pick something that they are passionate about and to make that the basis of their businesses.

I love nature photography, flowers, landscapes, travel etc.  I also love spirituality, and I was a monk for a number of years.  Combining these two loves I started a free email newsletter two years ago to share new photos and to share my own uplifting observations or experiences every week.

People tell me that they look forward to my email every Thursday… some call it therapy, others pray that it will never stop.  Everyone agrees that it is a highlight of the week.

“Beautiful newsletter!  Soft and lovely way to start the day.”  Jean Byrd Frederick, MD

“You are such an artist Todd, your words paint a picture!” Bernie Koftinoff, Kelowna, BC

This newsletter has become the basis of my business.  It accomplishes two things:  1. It gets me out taking new pictures every week and hones my writing skills.  2. It keeps my work in front of people who like seeing it.

When I first published a wall calendar two years ago I sent a message to my list of 120 readers and I sold 150 calendars! If you take care of your readers they will pay you for your efforts.  This year I printed 1000 calendars and have already sold 53 in just one week in the middle of August without strongly promoting it.

As I continue to build my business through search engine optimization and promotions to other lists my base of loyal customers is growing.  Gary detailed in his course everything I needed to know to make this happen.  From time to time I look back at the huge manual he gave us as part of the course material and I discover another creative way to improve my marketing.

Publishing is a very old profession, and it is all about marketing.  The biggest piece of advice I learned from Gary’s course was “write the marketing piece before you create the product.”  Gems like this have kept my business on target in early growth phase which devours many startups.  Thanks to Gary I’m not completely flying by the seat of my pants!

I love the way Gary uses publishing to create a lifestyle that is fulfilling to him.  I use it in the exact same way.  While there is a lot to do in the startup phase, everything I do is cumulative, allowing me more and more free time to do what I love:  take photographs and enjoy a pace of life which is not breakneck.  When I was on the course four years ago, I told him I wanted to step out of the rat race.  By becoming a self-publisher I have done just that.  I can speed up or slow down my business as I like and I can choose what I want to publish.  It is a business that allows maximum freedom in life.

If you like working for yourself on your own hours and are considering becoming a self-fulfilled publisher like me, I highly encourage you to take Gary’s course and learn from someone who has been doing this successfully for years.  He certainly gave me a boost, and I still use many of things I learned four years ago in my business today.  Todd

This is nice to read… a benefit to me.  There is a benefit for you as well.

As a special promotion to my readers Todd is offering a 10% discount on his 2010 photography calendar.

internet-business-idea

Summer on the farm.  When opportunity is hot we must seize it!

Knowing how to earn through your own internet business grows in importance as unemployment grows and more importantly as types of employment shifts.

Excerpts from the September 5, 2009 Wall Street Journal article, “Job Losses Weigh on Recovery Layoffs Slow but Unemployment Rate Hits 9.7%, Highest Since 1983” by Sudeep Reddy shows that getting a job is a diminishing option.

Here is the excerpt: Nonfarm payrolls fell by 216,000 jobs in the month, fewer than the 276,000 lost in July, the Labor Department said Friday. The economy has shed 6.9 million jobs since the recession began in December 2007. The data reinforced expectations that employers will begin adding jobs by early next year, though the pace of job creation remains uncertain.

The latest figures are consistent with an economy pulling out of the deepest downturn since the Great Depression. But rising unemployment portends persistent weakness in consumer confidence, income and spending, even as manufacturers start bouncing back and stocks revive. The construction and manufacturing sectors together accounted for more than half of August’s job losses. Losses in retail and business services narrowed. The biggest gains came in health care.

The rise in unemployment, after dipping to 9.4% in July, came as more Americans returned to the work force. Teenage unemployment hit 25.5%, the highest since the government began keeping records in 1948. Most economists expect the rate to top 10% in coming months and stay over 9% through 2010.

internet-business-idea

Autumn on the farm. When times change, we must embrace change.

Even more important is the fact that when the economy recovers the types of jobs available will have changed.  Older workers and graduating students may especially be affected.

Excerpts from a September 8, 2009 article “Job change takes on a new meaning”
in the Chicago Daily Herald show how greater skills will be required. The excerpt says: If this recession has taught us anything it’s the times they are a changin’, especially when it comes to business and the labor market. And, we must coach not only unemployed workers, but also high school and college students to recognize that and look to where the jobs will be in the future when considering a career.

The reason is pretty clear. Some bellwether corporations have gone bankrupt, entire industries are rethinking and reshaping their business plan; several traditional can’t miss careers are no longer sure things.

The American work force was sent reeling by corporate cutbacks. The jobless rate now flirts with 10 percent, and the economy has shed nearly 7 million jobs since the start of the recession.

Those numbers reflect laid off workers, but they also affect graduating students unable to start their career because no jobs are available.

And, that’s why workers – current and future – need to think change.

Energy jobs, especially at companies stepping up environmental initiatives, are expected to be an area of growth.

Do you have an interest in global business? It’s more important now than ever to ask two key questions when investigating a career choice: Where will the jobs be in the future? And what do I have to do to get one?

internet-business-idea

Winter on our farm. When times are harsh, we must bundle up, hibernate or move to warmer spots… like Ecuador (see below).

Merri and I love seeing people succeed.  We can all have success when we embrace change!

Please send your stories of job change success and see below how we can help you succeed.

Ecuador Export Tour Update

Here is an Ecuador export tour update that continues our thread on ways to earn globally with small international businesses.

Ecuador-export-tours Our Ecuador export tours visit many Ecuador markets… textiles in Cotacachi and weavings in Peguche, leather in Cotacachi… wood carving in San Antonio de Ibarra. Here is our last group arriving in Otavalo.

This update is provided by Maggie Beesley, a former Ecuador export attendee who now exports regularly from Ecuador.  She will conduct the July 4 Ecuador Export Tour:

Hi Everyone!!!

How many of you are packed?  I stay packed.  July 3rd is right around the corner.  Pack smart, bring a larger suitcase than you need, and be prepared to buy another big one ($8) to get all your treasures home.  We are already saving, aren’t we?

Yesterday, my husband and I returned from Puerto Rico and let me tell you about the prices there!  Wow!  Maybe we should all be taking our treasures to Puerto Rico to sell.  I saw so many things we are going to see in Ecuador and were they ever expensive in Puerto Rico!

Now on to our Import/Export adventures.  On one of our days together (July 8) we’ll visit the town of Otavalo and the market there.  This market is the largest indigenous market in all of South America.  The reason we are going on Wednesday is…not as many shoppers and much better prices than on a Saturday.  We like those better prices, don’t we?  While in Puerto Rico I saw a summer cape which I have bought all over Ecuador for $10.00.  In Puerto Rico, also at a market, that same type of cape was $42.00, and it was not near as pretty as the ones we are going to see in Otavalo.  Do you see the profit there?

I also just finished going through my latest Coldwater Creek Catalog, where they are having a 50% off sale and have some gorgeous earrings on sale now for $35.00 to $40.00.  Folks we are going to see much prettier ones for $5.00 and maybe up to $10.00, plus no sales tax or shipping charges.  The same is true for necklaces, scarves, and purses.  Buy that extra bag in Ecuador for $8.00, which I also saw in Puerto Rico for $40.00 to get home in and more and more of the wonderful savings.

Another day we are going to the Village of Peguche, which is the Village of the Weavers.  There are three things we will want to do in Peguche.

First, we will want to visit El Condor where people will be weaving as we watch a weaving exhibition.

Weaving at El Condor.

If you have never seen anyone weave on a wooden loom, it is fascinating, very complicated, and can take many days to complete a blanket, or a cape.  A lot of work!  How the people sit there and do this craft for hours on end is beyond me, but they do and the weaving is gorgeous.   Did I mention, the weaving is done with their hands for the pattern and the tightness of the weave is controlled with their feet?  No electricity here, just the rhythm ….clickity-clack,  clickity-clack…which is the sound you hear throughout the village.  We’ll also experience how the natural dyes are made including Cochineal, the rich wine color that only the emperors had in ages past.  (A little secret it is made from crushed up cactus bugs!)

Also in Peguche is an artist, Jose Cotacachi, who does wall hangings.  He exports to the United States and is shown in very high end stores at very high end prices.  You too can do this.  His work is breath taking, and the detail, well you will see what I mean. These sell to high in art galleries also.  Very easy to pack, just roll up your purchases and put them in that extra bag you bought.   Jose will ship to the U.S., but it is much cheaper to buy that $8.00 bag and do it yourself.   Jose actually has three different workshops in Peguche, and we will visit them all.

He loves his work.

Depending on time, we’ll determine the next thing we do, so I am just keeping it a secret.  I don’t want to rush anyone in this town.  Every time we go to Peguche, people always want to go back.  I hear too many times, “I wish I had bought that, or I didn’t see that one”.  So on this trip, we are going to try and see it all.

We will go to San Antonio de Ibarra, the Wood Carving town. One of the stores in San Antonio does gold leaf on statues…Some of these statues go to very important places in Europe and it can take a year or more to complete one statue.  Also, one small woodcarver studio (dirt floor) hosts those direct from the Louvre in Paris…bringing pics of their treasures to be copied!

Master Carver Marco Lopez.

Many of the towns in Ecuador are known for a particular craftsmanship. We will be in the heart of the Crafts Trail, just minutes away from the major markets.  Otavalo is the Indigenous Market town, Peguche is the Weaving town, Cotacachi the Leather town and San Antonio is the Wood Carving town. The particular talent… skill of each town is handed down generation to generation, family to family. Should a future generation of young people decide to leave the town and do something completely different the skill could be lost forever.  You know it is going to happen, that is why all the things we see are so precious.

Our first complete day in Cotacachi we are going to meet Roberto the man who grows and exports those wonderful Ecuadorian roses to so many of you in the United States. You have seen the roses in Gary’s emails.  Roberto is going to tell us how to get them, and how to have your own Export business with roses.  (Some past attendees of this course have done quite well selling roses direct from the source.  And, a big thing, Roberto’s roses are all from green plantations…your wedding clients will love this.  We will also be working the entire Leather Street (ArtePiel), which is only a three block stroll from El Meson.  So many stores, both sides of the street, and all just a little bit different.  There is also a small outdoor market we will visit in Cotacachi where I have gotten some great leather items.  This is going to be a “get outside in the sunshine day”, do some walking do some looking, and do some buying.

For all you guys coming along, one of the first stores we will visit is where you get those fabulous leather jackets and coats.  The secret word in this store is…”I know Micky”, or “Micky sent me” which could bring about that extra discount we all want.  I believe Micky will actually be in Cotacachi while we are there so we will all get to meet her and here about her businesses in Florida all from products bought in Ecuador.

To add to your packing list ….things to be sure and bring with you to Ecuador…
Comfortable walking shoes
Sunglasses
Sun protection
Sun hat
and not to be forgotten, your ATM Card!

Do not bring Travelers’ checks, or any checks like that. Do not bring $100 bills (hard to cash).   Cash works, and remember they use our dollar, so there is no converting to another currency!  (This is another great surprise and help…no need to worry about currency fluctuations!)

See you all in July.  Happy traveling!
