Don’t Lose Sleep!


When we sleep more, we are likely to earn better, live longer and live more enjoyably.

Do not let the economic, stock market and political turmoil  cause you to toss and turn at night.  Such things are not what cause failures or successes.  Our action, during the turmoil, determines what we achieve.  Operating on less than a full night sleep is a sure way to foul up our performance.

Here are some ways to reduce stress and sleep better!

Merri and I stay away from the noise and stress of big cities as much as we can.  We make sure we have eight solid hours of sleep almost every night.  All of  our homes are in places that are quiet and dark at night.  Nature lulls us gently to sleep.

Dark quiet nights help us avoid sleep disruption.

We find that getting enough quality sleep is an important contributor to both the mental clarity and energy we need to keep up with our heavy business workload.

A USA TODAY front page article entitled “Lack of sleep increases stroke risk” (1)  suggests this is also good for our health when it says:   The 30% of working adults who routinely sleep less than six hours a night are four times more likely to suffer a stroke, says a new study.  The findings are the first to link insufficient sleep to stroke; they’re also the first to apply even to adults who keep off extra pounds and have no other risk factors for stroke, says Megan Ruiter, lead author of the report. It will be presented Monday at the 26th annual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies in Boston.

One way to improve sleep is to sleep in dark, quiet places as Merri and I do.  Not everyone wants to live on rural land, but heavy curtains could perhaps help a lot.

Light pollution causes many sleep disorders and sleep deprivation causes sleep debt.  Sleep deprivation is a growing medical disorder that is usually missed because sleep is not taught in medical school.   When we miss sleep, we begin to build up a sleep debt.   If we were to lose an hour’s sleep a day in a week, we will have 7 hours of sleep debt.  This can be made up for by sleeping in on the weekend but if not, losses of really important functions… especially in these tense times… begin to occur.

Learn more at a biology lesson at a Brynmawr University website entitled “The Effects of Sleep Deprivation on Brain and Behavior” (2)  that says: Sleep is needed to regenerate certain parts of the body, especially the brain, so that it may continue to function optimally. After periods of extended wakefulness or reduced sleep neurons may begin to malfunction, visibly effecting a person’s behaviour.

Another tip is go to sleep before 10pm.

The circadian biological clock is controlled by a part of the brain called the Suprachiasmatic Nucleus (SCN), a group of cells in the hypothalamus that respond to light and dark signals from the optic nerve of the eye.

These signals regulate hormones, chemicals and neurotransmitters that determine our energy levels, vitality, and how we feel and sleep.

Before electricity came into regular use, most people would go to bed shortly after sunset, as most animals do.  Modern living has not evolved long enough to change this so the body is best prepared to sleep best starting around 9M until 5am.

During this time, the body is naturally set by the movements of the sun and the 24-hour natural cycle.   If we go to sleep no later than 10 pm (however, we usually go to sleep at 9 pm and awaken at 5 am) and rise no later than 6 am we get the best rest, repair, detoxification and rejuvenation.

A recent article in USA Today, “As obesity’s link to COVID-19 grows, one family that lost 24-year-old daughter diets together” (1) tells the tale.

The article says:  The parents and two brothers of Silvia Deyanira Melendez, 24, are all in therapy after losing their daughter and sister to COVID-19 on March 28.  She weighed more than 300 pounds with a body mass index of 60, double the BMI considered obese. This most likely contributed heavily to her Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and a heart condition that required open-heart surgery two years ago.

The chronic conditions that increase the risk of serious illness and death of COVID-19 are now well known: diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and being older than 65. Obesity is less well known or understood. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention groups “severe obesity,” defined as having a BMI of 40 or higher, with the other known “risk factors for serious illness” for COVID-19.

A growing number of studies and data on COVID-19 deaths confirm the link. The extra weight on people in the 40-plus BMI range who contract COVID-19 increases the chance they will require hospitalization, most likely in the intensive care unit. It also hampers the ability of physicians to treat them, especially with ventilators, doctors say.

Body fat complicates many health problems.   For example more than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer.  Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear. Body fat.

Studies showed that reduced body fat creates  a 25% lower chance of developing cancer.

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.? I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat, COVID-19 and cancer? Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body. Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system. Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them. The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble). This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways. When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead. These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation. Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

When you burn fat you turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy. Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins. The Greatest Fear


FDR said it succinctly.  “The Only Thing We Have to Fear Is Fear Itself”.  Anxiety is one of the greatest problems we face.  Nervousness  can cause us to invest poorly.  Fear stops us from turning our passions into profit with our own micro business.  Worry is bad for our health.  Despite these facts, anxiety is the most  prevalent class of psychiatric disorder in the general population.

Credible studies shows that essential oils can reduce anxiety.

Orange essential oil was used on patients in an intensive care unit the day after open-heart surgery. Patients showed a significant psychological benefit from the aromatherapy.

Orange aroma was tested in a dental office.  The smell appeared to have a relaxant effect. Patients had less anxiety, better moods, and more calmness compared to a control group with no oranges.

Essential Oil Deodorant for Natural Health

Here is why I am excited about the essential oil deodorant Merri and I use.

Merri and I lived and worked with this Ecuador Yatchak for seven years.

One of the main ways this shaman helped restore our health was through purification.  He had us walk in mountain mists.  “The negative ions in the mists attach to free radicals and purify the skin to cleanse us from the inside out,” he said.  Another purification was of our blood.  He fed us herbs, minerals and a low calcium diet.  There was almost no dairy served.  We used watermelons, pineapple and sweats to purify.

One of the most important lessons gained is that the first rule of good purification is “Avoid getting impurities in your body in the first place!”

Everyday living bombards most of us with all types of toxicity, from the air we breath, to the water we drink, even the receipts at the supermarket may be toxic.  Merri and I compensate for this by taking care in what we eat, drink and especially breathe and put on our skin.  The fastest way for any element good or bad to get into the blood stream is via the lungs and the skin.

Now there is a better way to replace a toxin with a purifier.

Since it is difficult for most of us to avoid toxicity in the West, this message looks at a longevity alternative and begins by showing how in the early 2000s, due to strict FDA  regulations, the government has approved a product that may encourage cancer, create dementia, Alzheimer’s and complicate kidney problems.

The FDA issued a final rule which said “over-the-counter (OTC) antiperspirant drug products are generally recognized as safe and effective and not misbranded as part of FDA’s ongoing review of OTC drug products”.  I suspect that part of this ruling was influenced by scientists with the Personal Care Products Council, the trade association that represents the cosmetic and personal care products industry.  They have claimed that “antiperspirants can be used with high confidence of their safety. They’ve been used for many years, and there’s no evidence that suggests a problem“.

Many people use over-the-counter antiperspirant drug products every day because almost everyone does.  That’s the way its seems like it has always been.  Is this wise or simply the massive repetition of an error?  We assume that the FDA exists to protect us, but must ask this question, “How much should we trust?”

The FDA’s claims of safety are not entirely correct, because antiperspirants contain aluminum. 

An article at Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment helps clarify the risks of placing aluminum under our arms every day. (2)  This article says of aluminum, a main ingredient in antiperspirants, “What’s it good for in humans? Simple answer: not very much.  Except for possible involvement in some enzymatic reactions, aluminum “has no known function in the human body.”   While there is little or no upside for aluminum in the body, there is a most definite downside: aluminum is a neurotoxin.

The Aluminum Downside

The Duke article (linked below) contains numerous links to a number of negative health effects, including impaired mental and motor function, Alzheimer’s and other brain diseases, and bone diseases.  It points out a number of questions about aluminum’s impact on human health and explains there is not much study on aluminum antiperspirants.  Then it says: So, while the FDA regulates antiperspirants as over-the-counter drugs and deems them safe, it hasn’t based its decision on a large body of work specifically examining these products.  So rather than a stamp of approval, FDA’s aluminum regulation seems more an indication that, given the ubiquitous nature of aluminum, exposure from antiperspirants isn’t believed to be unsafe.”

Antiperspirants and Disease:  It’s the Pits

In other words there’s no definitive answer.  There are links between aluminum and disease, yes.  There is a link to Alzheimer’s, dementia, diminished thinking and cancer but, no study provides specific proof of a direct link between antiperspirants and these problems.

We can see the risks of aluminum more clearly at a different government source, the Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry. (3)

This agency’s report on aluminum says: Workers who breathe large amounts of aluminum dusts can have lung problems, such as coughing or changes that show up in chest X-rays.  Some workers who breathe aluminum-containing dusts or aluminum fumes have decreased performance in some tests that measure functions of the nervous system.

Some people who have kidney disease store a lot of aluminum in their bodies.  Sometimes, these people developed bone or brain diseases that doctors think were caused by the excess aluminum.

Although aluminum-containing over the counter oral products are considered safe in healthy individuals at recommended doses, some adverse effects have been observed following long-term use in some individuals.

Studies in animals show that the nervous system is a sensitive target of aluminum toxicity.

Then there is the question of  parabens.

A health warning from Mercola.com (4) says:   99% of Breast Cancer Tissue Contained This Everyday Chemical (NOT Aluminum). Recent research found higher concentrations of parabens in the upper quadrants of the breast and axillary area, where antiperspirants are usually applied, suggesting they may contribute to the development of breast cancer.

The data from this latest study, the most extensive examination of parabens in human breast so far published, confirms previous work and raises a number of questions on the entire parabens, personal care product and human health debate, particularly relating to the source and toxicological significance of the paraben esters.

Merri and I have not used antiperspirants for decades.  We eliminate a potential toxicity and use purifying essential oils instead.  F

We mix tea tree with other essential oils in a base of organic jojoba oil and use this under our arms instead.

Avoid Stress With Music


Stress kills.

Stress can harm you physically… plus ruin your ability to make good investing, business and lifestyle decisions.

There is a great study on stress at the website of Weber University.  One chapter entitled “Stress and the Environment” shows how important music is to both reducing and creating stress. The entire chapter is linked below.

Dr. T. C. Singh, head of the Botany Department at Annamalia University, India, has conducted research into the effects of music on plants. He discovered not only that constant exposure to classical music caused plants to grow at twice their normal speed, but also went on to find what seemed to be one of the main causes of this accelerated growth. In his experiments, the violin was found to be one of the most life-enhancing instruments of all.

   Yet, perhaps the most interesting and significant of all of Dr. Singh’s findings was that later generations of the seeds of musically stimulated plants carried on the improved traits of greater size, more leaves, and other characteristics. Music had changed the plants’ chromosomes!

   To listen to Handel’s Messiah is not to debate intellectually about religion; it is to feel and become one with that surging inner flame of devotion. . . . It is the essence of this state that enters into us, tending to mold and shape our own consciousness into conformity with itself.

Several additional studies reflect the interesting and powerful effect of music.

One study done by Dorothy Retallack looked to see if plants responded to music similarly to how they respond to light. Plants respond to light in an interesting way. If a plant is place on a window sill where direct sunlight will shine, its flowers, after a period of time, will turn in the direction of the window and toward the sunlight. If the plant is turned so the flowers face away from the window, after a time, the flowers will again turn in the direction of the sun. Certainly many things are involved here, but one thing is certain, the plant seems to have a preference for sunlight. They respond positively to the light. Dr. Retellack wanted to see if the plants would respond in a similar way to types of music.

Six separate chambers were used with music speakers and similar plants in each chamber. Each plant received the same amount of water, light, and nourishment. The only difference for each plant was the type of music that was played in each of the chambers.

The first plant chamber had country & western music playing for a period of time. The plants exposed to this type of music didn’t appear to respond at all.

The second chamber of plants had the music of Claude Debussy playing continuously. The plants in this chamber responded by leaning away from the speakers by about 30%. The plants didn’t appear to have a preference for this type of music.

The plants in the third chamber were exposed to Jazz music. They responded by leaning toward the speakers by about 10%.

The fourth chamber had Indian Sitar music playing. The plants in this chamber were reported to respond by leaning toward the speakers by about 75%.

These plants appeared to show a great preference for this type of music. The next chamber had adagio movements of baroque music continuously playing. The plants in this chamber responded the same was as those exposed to the Indian Sitar music. Dr. Retellack reported that those plants that were closest to the speakers actually wrapped some of their branches around the speakers.

The final chamber of plants was exposed to the music of Led Zeppelin, a rock and roll group from the 1970’s. The results showed that these plants, after a short period of time withered and died.

We live in an era of rapid change and often new events can be disturbing… even bewildering and beyond stress.   Stress creates negative loops in lifetsyles. Stress leads to bad decisions and actions which create more stress… whihc blinds one to correct decsions.
