How to Live 11.11% Longer

Do the math about longevity and sleep.

The figures are not all in yet for 2017 but it looks like Americans will see a declining life expectancy for the third year in a row.  This has not happened since the Spanish flu, 100 years ago.

Life expectancy is climbing substantially for residents of every other industrialized nation.  America is alone in this decline.  Life spans are dropping to levels seen in Mexico and the Czech Republic.

One big reason for this drop in life expectancy is the opioid crisis.

Another reason for statistically shorter lifespans is increasing long term sleep deprivation.

Many studies suggest that there is a strong relationship between sleep duration and longevity.  One study that followed over 21,000 twins lasted more than 22 years (1).  The research looked at sleep duration, use of sleep medications and quality of sleep.

The conclusion was that people who sleep less than seven hours or more than eight hours a night, have an increased risk of death by 17 percent to 24 percent.

The use of sleep medications increased the risk of mortality by over 30%!

Below is the longevity math of getting the right amount of sleep:

If you live to 80, that’s about average.  You get 700,800 hours.

If you sleep 6 hours a night that’s bad.  That’s 175,200 of sleep.  You get 525,600 hours awake.

You gain 20% more years above the average with good sleep.

If you live to 100.  You get 876,000 hours.  Sleep 8 hours a night.  That’s 292,000 hours of sleep.

You get 584,000 hours awake.

Good sleep gains over 58,400, 11.11%, more wakeful hours.  More importantly, those hours will feel better!  The hours are more refreshed… healthier, more balanced, alert, energetic and at peace.

That math is a bit skewed so don’t put too much in it, but evidence is pretty conclusive that you gain quantity and quality of life when you get seven to eight hours of sleep each night.  Chronic sleep loss, contributes to health problems such as weight gain, high blood pressure, and a decrease in the immune system’s effectiveness.

Actually, we don’t need scientists to tell us how important sleep is to the quality of life.  One thing we all know is how we feel after a night without enough sleep!

Sleep makes you feel better, and a good mood is highly relevant to longevity.  Good, adequate sleep helps your heart, weight, mind, and every part of your body.

Here’s three tips on how to sleep better.

According to Ayurveda, the body needs energy to settle itself down in order to sleep.  Without such energy, the nervous system may respond by continuously releasing stress hormones.  A person at this deep level of exhaustion may not have enough energy to settle their mind and, although tired, may stay wired and be unable to truly rest.

Four Best Herbs for Sleep

There are a handful of herbs that I use in my practice that naturally support a healthy response to stress while acting as nervines, tonics, or adaptogens for the nervous system.  Be careful, as many herbs commonly used for sleep are actually too calming, causing lingering tiredness throughout the day.

My rule of thumb for identifying a true nervous system tonic is to be sure it supports both sleep at night and healthy energy during the day—making it neither a stimulant nor a sedative.  Here are my favorite “four horsemen for sleep,” which make up my Sleep Easy formula in the LifeSpa online shop.

Brahmi (Centella asiatica)

Brahmi is one of my favorite herbs for deep nervous system rejuvenation. It has shown to be rejuvenating for the nervous system with a long history of supporting healthy sleep.

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)

Ashwagandha is considered one of the most well-studied adaptogens, and is used to help reset healthy sleep/wake cycles in those with circadian imbalances. (3) As a deep rejuvenative for the mind, body and mood, it supports energy during the day while under stress, and also supports the body’s ability to normalize cortisol levels so that they are in sync with natural daily circadian cycles.

Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora)

Skullcap is another well-studied adaptogen, nervous system and mood tonic that can support healthy daytime energy and the ability to settle the nervous system in the evening.

Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata)

#2: Prepare to sleep after sunset.  Numerous ancient systems of health operate on the principle that the body works in cycles that are in tune with nature.  Every day cycles consists of two four hour cycles aligned with the movement of the sun.  The first waking cycle begins around 2am and around 4am to 5am (the average time of sunrise) is the best time to wake up.   Noon, when the sun is highest is the best time to eat the day’s main meal.  The evening cycle based around sunset is most conducive for sleep.  The body starts to slow down around six pm and if you allow your mind and body to slow down, around 9pm to 10pm is the best time to start sleep for deepest sleep.

#3: Slow down your mind and body after 6pm.  Quit work.  Change into relaxing clothes.  Avoid using smartphones, tablets, and computers.  Their electrical magnetic frequencies can cause lower levels of melatonin and shorten the deepest cycles of sleep.

Avoid the evening news!  Why fill you head with adrenaline pumping negatives that keep your thoughts active and your heart pounding.  Mediate… or do some deep breath or a few stretches… or best, all three.

Eliminate caffeine and alcohol that can increase nighttime urination.  Avoid big meals in the evening.  They make the body work when it needs to rest.

Medicine is dose.  Sleep is the greatest of medicines.  When we get enough, but not too much sleep, chances are we’ll live longer… better and enjoy the extra time more.
