Two Views Inside Health Care


A health insider shared this information in response to our recent article “Avoid the Sneaky Drug” (1).

That article laid a large part of the blame for America’s health-care crisis on stress, high pharmaceutical costs and poor nutrition.

A reader sent this note.   After reading your post this morning, I am in total agreement with your observation regarding the unconscionably high cost of American pharmaceuticals. The larger perspective, however, is that everything related to health care in America is way overpriced, of alarmingly poor quality, and self defeating.

I spent a total of 42 years working in the health care field, 30 years in front line, at-the-table surgical care, and 12 years in medical research. During those years, the incredible amount of fat and waste that was endemic to the health care field made a deep impression on me. Sadly it is in every facet of health care.

There are three main areas of American health care where a complete overhaul is demanded to resolve our morbidly obese health care system. First, too many doctors got into medicine for the wrong reasons. They came to medicine to make money and not necessarily to help people heal. Medical schools aren’t filtering out these profit driven students because they like the high tuition costs coming in. I’ve worked with innumerable doctors and surgeons who made no bones about their interest in money and their bald faced disdain for their patients. Also, they expect to get their practices all kinds of favors from the government or tax entities that other small businesses don’t get. They expect to be treated with deference and to not be responsible as are all other small business men and women.

Second, hospitals have facilities and programs that pander to the ugly American patient who wants to be pampered and fawned over instead of getting cost conscious healing. As one example of their faulty philosophies, these hospitals will buy incredibly expensive equipment like MRI scanners, CT scanners, radiation therapy machines, when there is barely a need for these devices. The actual usages of these machines don’t support their costs and so the hospital vastly over charges for their minimal usages in hopes of recouping their costs and covering up their poor planning. Instead of planning in cooperation with all hospitals in a service area and sharing expensive equipment and keeping costs down, and utilizing these machines to their maximum, they buy the machines and then get high priced marketers to bring in the patients, many of whom don’t even need the diagnostics they are being subjected to. This is just one tiny example of the profligate spending of  hospitals.

The third area of health care that is morbidly obese is the research area and the funding entities, the National Institute of Health, big pharma, and other funders intent on gleaning unconscionable profits. The fact that whoever pays for the research owns the data and can hide it or spin it or massage it in any way they see fit to conform to their own purposes, makes it possible for the funders to put out false or misleading conclusions about their results. This can then lead to marginally and usually over-priced drugs to treat a “condition” that would probably heal on its own with no intervention at all. (Remember “Restless Leg Syndrome”). Also, the whole philosophy of research which says everybody has to have the latest and greatest computers, highly specialized research equipment beautiful modern labs etc., ignore the fact that their existing equipment is perfectly fine, their existing facilities perfectly functional. Too many dollars go to every new research project to buy new equipment when existing equipment would work fine.

Now, probably the main reason American health care is so bad and so expensive is the fact that it is a fee-for-service based system. When you have a pay system that pays for how many procedures  you perform, you create a mindset that makes the health care persons want to do more procedures. Basic human nature allows greed to take over. This leads to too many unnecessary procedures, too much charged for marginally relevant procedures, and too many health care workers chasing too few health care dollars. Recently, healthcare rating systems rated our system number 22 behind Slovenia. The best health care in the world was then found in Germany, France, and Britain-countries that have health care professionals on salary and not on fee for service bases.

In this country, we’ve allowed the insurance companies to go for the profit of the system and not to drive for the quality of health care. This has created a corrupt system that is “too big to fail.” It’s the same dynamic the big banks and insurance companies have insinuated themselves into and which very nearly brought the whole world to complete financial collapse and which has again been given a pass to continue business as usual. Until this country grows a spine and a new conscience, all the “necessary” functions these entities deal in, banking and health care, will continue to victimize the public that doesn’t see their ‘crimes’ and decide to do something about it.

An article in the New York Times, “A Whistle-Blower Tells of Health Insurers Bilking Medicare” (2) shares how isuraers get into the game of pushing up health care costs and reducing health care quality.

A whistle-blower, a former well-placed official at UnitedHealth Group, asserts that the big insurance companies have been systematically bilking Medicare Advantage for years, reaping billions of taxpayer dollars from the program by gaming the payment system.

Finance directors like him monitored projects that UnitedHealth had designed to make patients look sicker than they were, by scouring patients’ health records electronically and finding ways to goose the diagnosis codes.  There were bonuses when hit their revenue targets, but no bonuses for better health outcomes or for more accurate patients’ charts.

The sicker the patient, the more UnitedHealth was paid by Medicare Advantage — and the bigger the bonuses people earned.  The amounts in question industry wide are mind-boggling: Some analysts estimate improper Medicare Advantage payments at $10 billion a year or more.

The American health-care system could be better described as a disease creating disease management system creating big profits for a few.  The leaders of this system benefit from the nation being sick.  The funds involved and the political influence these profits garner make it unlikely that the system will get better soon.

This is why we share little known health tips such as our annual summer time reminder about eating watermelon.

Vedic and Shamanic nutritional health sciences are based around the body being a balance of air, fire and water.  All food is classified as air, fire or water pacifying or aggravating.  All seasons are also classified as an air, fire or water season.

Summer not surprisingly is a fire season.  The basic health tip is to eat foods that balance the seasons.  In summer (fire season) eat foods that pacify fire.  During the summer it is easy… even likely…. especially in the aggressive Western fired up societies to accumulate too much heat in the body.  One tasty way to get rid of some of this fire I learned from an Ecuador shaman.  This is a great way to reduce excess summer heat from the body that can also make you look five years younger at the same time.

Eat watermelon.

Natural health comes from a balance between three physical elements, motion (air), material (water) and digestion (fire).

Reducing fire especially in the summer is beneficial for health because fire rules digestion and when out of balance we do not digest food or any information correctly.

However, fire also rules beauty because fire imbalances are reduced by the body through the skin. Too much fire creates rashes, acne, blemishes, poor skin luster, dull hair and much more.  This fire reducing trick not only enhances health, but also help clear your skin and make it glow.

Watermelon is a cleanser.  Eat a whole, big one if you can.  This cleansing works as the flushing action of the melon removes excessive fire, water and air.

The melon must be fresh, whole and cut within 20 minutes. Watermelon is a sponge that absorbs and flushes free radicals from the system.  If you let the melon sit after cutting, it oxidizes and loses its cleansing capacity.  After sitting for awhile it is filled with free radical from the air and cannot absorb yours.

The rule is “Eat it alone or leave it alone”.

Make the melon your entire meal and eat nothing for three to four hours before and after.  Sound crazy?  I thought so but tried it after watching a Shaman prescribe it for a woman suffering a severe rash (a summer fire imbalance).  I felt so good that I now make this a regular habit during the summer…and thoroughly enjoy it!

One of the biggest problems many people have with problems is their belief that the government should, can and/or will fix it.  When it comes to health-care don’t count on a federal fix any time soon.  Take back control of your habits and regain command of your good feelings, energy, happiness and good natural health.

A recent article in USA Today, “As obesity’s link to COVID-19 grows, one family that lost 24-year-old daughter diets together” (1) tells the tale.

The article says:  The parents and two brothers of Silvia Deyanira Melendez, 24, are all in therapy after losing their daughter and sister to COVID-19 on March 28.  She weighed more than 300 pounds with a body mass index of 60, double the BMI considered obese. This most likely contributed heavily to her Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and a heart condition that required open-heart surgery two years ago.

The chronic conditions that increase the risk of serious illness and death of COVID-19 are now well known: diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and being older than 65. Obesity is less well known or understood. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention groups “severe obesity,” defined as having a BMI of 40 or higher, with the other known “risk factors for serious illness” for COVID-19.

A growing number of studies and data on COVID-19 deaths confirm the link. The extra weight on people in the 40-plus BMI range who contract COVID-19 increases the chance they will require hospitalization, most likely in the intensive care unit. It also hampers the ability of physicians to treat them, especially with ventilators, doctors say.

Body fat complicates many health problems.   For example more than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer.  Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear. Body fat.

Studies showed that reduced body fat creates  a 25% lower chance of developing cancer.

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.? I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat, COVID-19 and cancer? Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body. Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system. Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them. The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble). This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways. When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead. These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation. Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

When you burn fat you turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy. Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins.
