Thanksgiving on The Equator

An Ecuadorian time of thanksgiving has a timely message now.

We have also have had the opportunity to celebrate Thanksgiving in many countries, from Ecuador to England to Hong Kong. We especially enjoy this day because no one outside the US recognizes Thanksgiving Day in November as an official holiday.  This gives us an opportunity to share a beautiful American tradition with other cultures.

Our family is so wide spread…five kids: in Oregon, Florida, London and Bristol, England, can rarely all unite for Thanksgiving.  Since everyone globally likes feasts, we find it easy and delightful to create a larger family.

We often use the day to invite friends, wherever we are, to share our turkey, dressing, cranberries and pumpkin pie (though there have been challenges finding the ingredients at times – one year in Gloucestershire, we had to settle for making a yam pie as there were no pumpkins!)  Many from other nations have left our Thanksgiving table knowing the true heart of America better after sharing this traditional meal with us.

This is a wonderful…simple way to enjoy friends and expand goodwill worldwide for which we are truly thankful.

Ecuador does not celebrate Thanksgiving but while living on the Equator, Merri and I learned a great lesson about the importance of having a thankful attitude.

This was the year 2000.  Merri and I were spending an entire winter at our Ecuadorian plantation with a shaman and his apprentices.

The shaman and his apprentices stayed in the plantation house. We lived in this crumbling 10’x 10′ hut, no electricity, no phone and no hot water…for months just so we could have privacy and to be more or less in nature.

Ecuador-Thanksgiving

Our goal was to understand how the lifestyle of the indigenous equator  and how the residents really lived, thought and felt.  We did not expect how much we would learn.

Though the apprentices had no material wealth and earned about $30 a month, the joy and happiness during that time with those people was infectious, laughter always just waiting to bubble over at any event.

Then one day around thanksgiving the Ecuador’s economy literally came to a shrieking halt.  Almost everything shot down.

The country ran out of gas.  The banks were closed.  The shaman and the apprentices lost every penny they had in the banks.  Upon learning this, the shaman called for a mingo (this word means circle and represents a meeting) where he performed a ceremony of thanks for all the change that these losses would bring.

Later after the meeting we sat on the front porch and looked out, over this view.

Ecuador-Thanksgiving

We watched the setting sun, dropping in a burst of purple and mauve. The wind was warm and a symphony of insects gave a serenade. This now penniless shaman looked over and whispered. “Life is good”.

Changes in his financial life did not rob him of a penny’s worth of living.  He felt what others considered a loss with gratitude.

I can’t put in words what a sense of peace and harmony rolled over us as we looked down at the lushness of the valley below, the mists rising, the waterfalls folding in lacy cascades, bird songs trilling through the clear air.  The river although far below us was a great bubbling sound along with the strangeness of some of the bird calls. This was a joy we had not felt since we were kids.

As Merri and I enjoy this day of thanks, we feel that our thankfulness is heightened due to our sharing Thanksgiving with other cultures that have helped us learn to be thankful, about everything…even though they may seem negative at the time.

We cannot thank you enough!  We look forward with great joy to sharing more ideas in the year ahead with you. If we can in some way make your life more joyous and help you laugh, learn and be grateful, we will truly be blessed. There is such beauty on this earth and in this world at this time. We feel privileged to be able to share it with you.

Be More Intelligent With Super Thinking Routines

Here is a way to increase intelligence and reduce fear.

Two points almost everyone agrees on about the future are… first we need to be smarter to keep up with the faster pace of change… and second the world’s economy has and will continue to globalize.

Be smarter as the world turns faster.  Super Thinking tactics in our courses help create new income opportunity and also can improve health.

A Wall Street Journal article entitled “Ways to Inflate Your IQ” says: Many people think of IQ as a genetic trait, like brown eyes or short legs: You’re born with it and you’re stuck with it. Now, a growing body of research is showing that a person’s IQ can rise—and even fall—over the years.

Scores can change gradually or quickly, after as little as a few weeks of cognitive training, research shows.

In the latest study, 33 British students were given IQ tests and brain scans at ages 12 to 16 and again about four years later by researchers at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging at University College London; 9% of the students showed a significant change of 15 points or more in IQ scores.

On a scale where 90 to 110 is considered average, one student’s IQ rose 21 points to 128 from 107, lifting the student from the 68th percentile to the 97th compared with others the same age, says Cathy Price, professor of cognitive neuroscience at the center and co-author of the study, published last month in Nature.

Swings in individual IQ scores are often written off as the product of measurement error or a test subject having a bad day. But MRIs in this study showed changes in gray matter in areas corresponding to fluctuations in the kids’ skills, Dr. Price says.

There are practical steps people can take to see longer-term IQ changes. A 30-year study at the National Institute of Mental Health found that people whose work involves complex relationships, setting up elaborate systems or dealing with people or difficult problems, tend to perform better over time on cognitive tests. Test scores of people whose jobs are simple and require little thought actually tend to decline, according to the research, published in 1999 in Psychology and Aging.

New tasks stimulate the brain most. When researchers at the University of Hamburg subjected 20 young adults to one month of intense training in juggling, they found an increase in the corresponding gray matter in the brain as early as seven days after the training began.

Fluctuations in IQ scores over time underscore the brain-boosting benefits of a complex job, musical training, advanced schooling and new experiences throughout a lifetime.

Music lessons are linked to higher IQ throughout life, according to research by E. Glenn Schellenberg, a psychology professor at the University of Toronto at Mississauga. Six years’ lessons lifted children’s IQ scores an average 7.5 points.

Super Thinking Tactics improve the brain through the use of music.  The Super Thinking Story.

The educational program Merri and I have developed uses a form of brain wave integration that opens enormous opportunity for expansion, understanding, peacefulness as well as greater wealth. We are sharing this in depth program that teaches Super Thinking.

Super Thinking uses frequency (in music and a number of other ways) to integrate brain waves so the process of absorbing, processing and recalling information is vastly accelerated. This brings forth the three C’s: Calm, Clarity and Coherence.

How the Super Learning History Brings Opportunity to You Now:

Our Super Thinking programs are not gimmicks or tricks… just advanced education.

Merri and I are explorers. Our business began 46 years ago (May 1968) and we continue to always look for what’s next… trying to stay on or ahead of the leading edge.

This process helped us create the totally unique system we use that incorporates numerous tactics.

The first tactic is to use Baroque music in the learning process. At least three best selling books, “Superlearning”, the “Mozart Effect” and “Superlearning 2000″ have revealed insights about how to learn and think more powerfully based on systems drawn from the Bulgarian educational master, Dr. Georgi Lozanov.

This one tactic alone is so powerful that Small Business Innovation Research… an official site of the US government granted over $100,000 for the specific purpose they said was: to provide a method to remove barriers which hinder or prevent the employment of blind persons. An innovative method call the Lozanov learning system is proposed to help train blind persons to become computer programers and operators of automated equipment.

Merri was among just a few who learned directly from Dr. Lozanov the one time he visited the USA and is licensed in these techniques.

Merri has enhanced this system with numerous other tactics. One is to make slight alterations in nutrition. Altered nutrition can make anyone a person 25% smarter. These two tactics are just part of seven, easy to use learning techniques that help gain any skill, from computers to athletics to conversational languages… in much less time than traditional learning techniques… often two-to-five times faster, in exciting and innovative ways…but most of all it is a system that is stress free and full of fun.

Our Super Learning System helps in innumerable walks of life. This is why the second year of our teaching program offers extra opportunity for you now.

Problems Can Create Opportunity

There is a huge and growing problem of accelerating change that requires accelerated learning. You can use a Super Thinking focus in every aspect of your life including your business… shifting our mental process into overdrive.

Super Thinking works by focusing on the learner first… the data second. This system “grows the learner” rather than just expands the information. The explosion of data we must all process every day means there is too much information to process already. Let’s view this learning in terms of plumbing to outline what “Growing the Learner” means.

If you have 4.5 inches of information flowing through a 4 inch learning pipe, the solution is not to add another inch of information. The answer is to first create a six inch pipe and then an even larger pipe…a never ending expansion of abilities!

Share our 50 years of Experience

When it comes to having a micro business in online publishing, seminars, courses and tours, there are few people with more experience than Merri and me.  Over 49 years we have organized, marketed and conducted thousands of tours for tens of thousands in dozens and dozens of countries (even behind the Iron Curtain).  This course shares how we have done this… what we did right… what we did wrong… and what you can do better.

Super Thinking Goes Way Beyond Spanish

Our training teaches an effective way to teach languages but covers much more many… perhaps all fields of education.

For example. We teach Super Thinking Business seminars that show how these mind expanding tactics can be applied to starting and running a business, to forex trading and investing. Athletes of all types… golfing being one common sport benefit. The Soviet Union… even though a third world country… excelled in the Olympics… as well as beating the USA into outer space… because it integrated FM teaching tactics as developed by Dr. Georgi Lozanov (one of Merri’s teachers) into its educational system.

Our Super Thinking plan goes far beyond Lozanov and allows you to enhance every part of your life.

The Rose Colored Glass in the UK

The rose colored glass in the UK can teach us a lot about why we should move towards where we love instead of away from what we fear or hate.

You’ll be amazed (and saddened and frustrated) at what lays ahead in Merry Olde England.

Fact #1: The problem you’ll see comes because of three facts, the first of which is that watching all the time is…

predator

a predatory action.  Watching by a predator is also predatory action.

I grew up as the son of a zookeeper and enjoyed living with many exotic animals.   We raised many lions and tigers at home.  I learned a lot about predators from that.

Here is an old newspaper clipping from the Oregonian. The story was about my sister Sandra and me with the second baby lion, Duchess, we raised. I was only seven or eight then and over the years we raised more than a dozen of them.

healthy-pet-lions

We learned several lessons.

#1: Do not place your hand or any body part between the lion and his or her food… even if they are small… even if they are a great, loving pet.

#2: Never forget they are a wild animal just two or three generations removed from the wilderness.  Even though they seem tamed they are still ruled by the law of the jungle.

#3: Never… ever… leave the bigger cats alone with a small child.

If you ever take a child to the zoo, observe the attention the little ones get from the big cats… the absolutely focus on the child.

Predators are hardwired to watch… and wait for an opportunity.  Watching by a predator is a predatory action.  If we are watched all the time… we have to let our guard down once in awhile and then we are vulnerable. Predators know this.

Fact #2: Bad government is increasingly contagious.  We live in a global economy and news travels much faster than in the days of Marco Polo.  When I began our business in the 1970s it was easy to invest in currencies because the US was fiscally irresponsible.  Other nations… Germany, Japan and Switzerland… the Netherlands, and others were not.

However all these nations contained similar demographic disasters… ie a slowing birth rate leaves a lot of old people without enough youth to provide for them.

Now Japan has even more debt than the USA. Here is a chart of national debt in relation to GDP and interest rates on government bonds issued by each country.

government debt

When a government succeeds or survives doing something bad (the US, UK and Germany are leaders in this) the bad idea catches on quickly.

Fact#3:  There are bad people and predators in government just like in any other organization.

If these facts are correct it means we can assume that any bad government idea that succeeds in one place will spread.  We can also assume that in the government and in the bad government regulation there will be predators.

We have seen in the initial messages in this series some ideas that offer predators a chance to watch us a lot.   We have seen growing government intrusion in Canada and Mexico. Let’s see what’s up in the UK.

The rose colored view of England may be of a common law nation where individuality is so cherished that even driver’s licenses do not require photos.  Law enforcement is friendly Bobbies on bikes.   Excerpts from a recent yahoo.news article entitled “Britain unveils electronic mass surveillance plan” by  Raphael Satter suggests that this image is really distorted and why George Orwell was so very prophetic when he wrote 1984. He just had his timing off by about 3o years.

The article says:  British authorities on Thursday unveiled an ambitious plan to log details about every Web visit, email, phone call or text message in the U.K. — and in a sharply-worded editorial the nation’s top law enforcement official accused those worried about the surveillance program of being either criminals or conspiracy theorists.

Home Office Secretary Theresa May said in an editorial published ahead of the bill’s unveiling that only evil-doers should be frightened.

All that data would be kept for up to a year — ready for browsing whenever anyone in authority wanted it. In some cases, the bill envisages monitoring the information in real time.

“This is a huge amount of information, very intrusive to collect on people,” David Davis, one of the proposal’s most outspoken critics, told BBC radio. “It’s not content, but it’s incredibly intrusive.”

Authorities and civil libertarians have been debating the plan for weeks, but Thursday marked the first time that the government itemized exactly what kinds of activity it wanted to track.

The list is long.

The bill would force providers — companies such as the BT Group PLC or Virgin Media Inc. — to log where emails, tweets, Skype calls and other messages were sent from, who was sending them, who they were sent to, and how large they were. Details of file transfers, phone calls, text messages and instant conversations, such as those carried over BlackBerry Messenger, would also be recorded.

The bill demands that providers collect IP addresses, details of customers’ electronic hardware, and subscriber information, including names, addresses, and payment information.

What May didn’t mention in her editorial — and the Home Office left off its press release — was that the government also is seeking to keep logs of citizens’ Internet history, giving officials access to the browsing habits of roughly 60 million people — including sensitive visits to medical, dating, or pornography websites.

Prefer to send mail the old-fashioned way? That would be monitored, too. Address details and other markers printed onto envelopes would be copied; parcel tracking information would be logged as well.

Officials say they need all that information to stay on top of a rapidly-changing technological landscape. Britain’s online child protection agency said Thursday it was missing out on a quarter of the traffic used by child pornography networks. In an editorial in the Times of London entitled “Trust me, I need to know about your emails,” Scotland Yard chief Bernard Hogan-Howe said that the collection of communications data played a role in 95 percent of serious organized crime operations.

The article went on to explain that the Home Secretary dismissed worries that the bill would stomp on free expression as “ridiculous claims” dreamed up by “conspiracy theorists” and said  “Without changing the law the only freedom we would protect is that of criminals, terrorists and pedophiles,” she said.

This to me is quite frightening.   Even worse is the knowledge that other governments will be watching to see if the Brits succeed. If the UK government does succeed… expect to see this type of legislation in other countries.  Even England’s failure might give some predators information on other ways to accomplish similar goals.

One of the Home Office Secretary quotes is “Unless you are a criminal, then you’ve nothing to worry about from this new law.”  This is where those of us who favor more privacy must have some concern.

These new uses of technology are maneuvers of war.  Governments can get citizens to give up many rights during a war because of fears produce in a nation.

Technology has altered the methods of war by eliminating the concepts of time and space for the battle and battlefield.   Battles can now be fought anywhere… any time at the choosing of the enemy.

The defense is to watch for potential battles and spot the enemy before they attack.

The cost of this defense is the loss of privacy so it is likely that we will see more rules, regulations and laws such as this adopted in many countries..

I hate this but believe it is better to face the challenge of this reality and figure out how to deal with it.   Adapting is better than to deny that this might become a fact.

We cannot go back. We cannot escape the risk that this type of enforcement will be implemented where we live and anywhere and elsewhere.

Every technological change that has evolved during war has created some risk.  The auto in every garage came after WWI.  Now auto accidents are a leading cause of deaths… especially in youth.

Fertilizer emerged from WWII.  Today the risks of cancers have grown… very likely due to fertilizer polluted food.   The internet came from WWIII.  Today we if we use the internet… we lose huge amounts of privacy.

Despite the negatives we gain at the same time which is why most of us have a car… which is why most of us have a full table and which is why  most of us have a computer, iPhone or tablet and privacy robbing bank account and credit card.

Change will come. We are in a global economy and technology has erased the dimensions of time, space and privacy.

The purpose of this series is to figure out the best way to maintain our personal integrity and privacy in an increasingly unprivate world.

We cannot go back.  We cannot escape.  Wherever we move there will be loss of privacy risks.

The next  message in this series will look at opportunities… what we can do and how groomers (boomers who are grandparents) can help live better as these changes evolve.

Gain Super Thinking – Learn Spanish in Cuenca, Ecuador

Learn Spanish in Cuenca, Ecuador June 2,3,4 2017.

There are seven benefits you gain beyond Spanish when you learn the techniques of Super Thinking-Learning Spanish.

cuenca inn

Learn Spanish in Cuenca, Ecuador this June, 2017.

Speaking Spanish is a huge benefit on its own.  You can become one of the rare North Americans who can get along in Spanish speaking countries.  You can be one of the special people who can communicate with 10 million non-English speakers in the USA.  Spanish is the second most used language in the USA.  There are more Spanish speakers than speakers of Chinese, French, German, Italian, Hawaiian, and the Native American languages combined.  According to the Census Bureau, Spanish is the primary language of nearly 50 million people in the US.  This is the largest Spanish-speaking community outside of Mexico. Only half of these speakers also speak English “very well,” and 19% do not speak Spanish at all.  XXXX

You can tap into all this potential when you speak Spanish.  Yet there are seven more benefits.

An article in England’s leading newspaper, the Telegraph, entitled “Why learn a foreign language? Benefits of bilingualism” (1) sum up the biggest benefit of learning a second language and increased intelligence.  The article says: “Learning a foreign language is more than just a boost to your CV or handy for traveling.  It will make you smarter, more decisive and even better at English.  Physiological studies have found that speaking two or more languages is a great asset to the cognitive process.  The brains of bilingual people operate differently than single language speakers, and these differences offer several mental benefits.”

The article then explains studies that show seven cognitive advantages gained from learning a foreign language.

#1: You become smarter
#2: You build multitasking skills
#3: You stave off Alzheimer’s and dementia
#4: Your memory improves
#5: You become more perceptive
#6: Your decision-making skills improve
#7: You improve your English

This is why I invite you to visit Ecuador and learn how to use Super Thinking as you learn Spanish in three days.

Does it sound impossible to learn Spanish in three days?  Yes, it is impossible when you try to learn Spanish in the traditional way.

However, there is a scientific method of learning… proven and described in numerous best selling books that create educational jumps by making education natural, easy and fun.   This course works because it is education without stress!

This method was created and refined by the Bulgarian educational master, Georgi Lozanov.  who transformed the entire Soviet educational system to such a degree that this third world country beat the USA into space.

Merri was lucky to be one of a handful of students outside of Bulgaria who were allowed to be taught this system in the early 70s.  She practiced this unique and remarkable form of education for  four decades.

Merri and I began integrating these techniques with other shamanic and educational tactics we had gained in our global travels and applied them to teach Spanish in three days.

The course has been proven again and again by the thousands who have used this system.   You can read a few of the many raves we have received from delegates who have learned from the Super Thinking Spanish course we created.   If this is not proof enough, I have provided links so you can read dozens more raves.  If this still is not proof enough, I’ll be happy to provide phone numbers so you can talk to those who have learned to speak Spanish in three days.

One delegate who attended a Super Thinking + Spanish course taught by two of the Super Spanish teachers that Merri and I trained (Shawn and Suzanne Bandick) wrote:

super spanish course images

Here are a few quotes from other delegates of courses conducted by our Super Spanish teachers.

One delegate from St. Louis wrote about his courses with Super Spanish teacher, Mark Frakes:  Hi Gary,  Just ended forty-five years in dentistry last week, and I’m on to a new career. What is my new career?  Still formulating, but the eye -opening,mind expanding Super-Spanish course last weekend in St. Louis surely shows me the opportunity exists to expand my horizons. Mark was a very capable leader and teacher and his choice of a pronunciation coach was well received.

Besides having a lot of nice people to learn our new language; the methods Merri and you developed proved to be just what you said they would be. We all and I in particular relaxed our way to new learning.  I feel so very comfortable with the basis of my new language skills that I know I will be spitting out great Spanish sentences by the time I reach Ecuador in October.  Last year I spent six weeks in Ecuador and now I plan on conversing with the people.

Today’s excerpt of your newsletter really hit home. You do what you say you will. There are no surprises or hidden sales tricks. The only tricks are beneficial to our learning.  Thank you for a wonderful experience that I was quite unable to grasp how you would pull it off.  You did,and I look forward to other courses that you offer, and I have absolutely no doubt they also will work beneficially.  Thanks to Mark, who you chose well to represent your program.  Best regards, Denis Molloy.

Another wrote about Super Spanish teacher, Glenn Sterling’s course:   Buenos Dias, Gary y  Glenn,  Here is a testimonial for Super Thinking Super Spanish.  Please feel free to use all or part in promotions for the course.  In addition, you may give my email address to any prospect “on the fence” about enrolling.  Yesterday, in Cotacachi, Ecuador, I finished Super Spanish Super Learning.  I had high expectations for the course and they were exceeded.

The course was taught in English by Dr. Glenn Sterling, a witty, engaging, retired chiropractor, and Alberto, his Ecuadorian side kick, who made sure we learned to pronounce everything correctly.  After three days, I can speak Spanish in complete sentences. In simple conversations, such as buying groceries or ordering a meal, I can make myself understood. I think that’s incredible!

Although I am far from the competence level of a native speaker, I feel I’ve taken a giant step forward in learning Spanish so that I can experience the people and culture of Ecuador.  The foregoing benefits would have more than justified the time and money I invested in Super Thinking Super Spanish. And learning some Spanish was not the most important benefit I got from the course.

Prior to leaving the USA, I had felt for some time that the pace of life there was unhealthy for me (and for most people) and I did nothing about it.

I’ve thought about the pace issue during the course.  One of the key elements Merri Scott designed into Super Learning is placing the student in the optimal state for learning.

During the course of the day and night, humans experience four types of brain waves: alpha, beta, delta, and theta. It turns out we learn best in alpha state.  Research has shown that alpha state can be induced by meditation, listening to Baroque music (or any music that has about 60 beats per minute) and by taking a theanine (the active ingredient in green tea) supplement.

Getting into alpha involves slowing down and relaxing.  So, the class includes baroque music and guided journeys to support relaxation.  Imagine learning while relaxing and having fun. That’s not how I remember school!

The brutal truth: In recent years, I’ve rarely relaxed.   (No wonder I have high blood pressure!) and, suddenly, I’m aware of it. Why?

1. Since early April, I’ve been living in a small town in a country with a slower pace of life and I’ve been affected by it.  Positively, I’d say.

2. In class, the past three days, I’ve been re-introduced to guided journeys and introduced to the calming effects of Baroque music (www.sundaybaroque.org).  What a blessing! I’m inclined to make one or both a daily part of my life.   Rob Christi.  Cotacachi, Ecuador

Another attendee from a course wrote:   “I took this incredible class a few weeks ago, and I would like to tell anyone that is interested, that it is an amazing three days of learning with lots of laughs included. You leave everyday wanting to learn more and are so excited to do so.

“Other Spanish classes and tutoring made us feel like it would take forever to get to the point where we could put it into practice, but this method gave us a more fluent use for everyday life almost immediately AND the confidence to use it.  It is a fantastic way to show people how much they know and give confidence to learn and use Spanish creating a momentum.

“I liked how simple it made speaking Spanish. Shawn and Suzanne are amazing teachers.  They made learning Spanish easy and fun in a very relaxed, comfortable atmosphere.  I would definitely recommend this course.  Even if you know some Spanish, this helps make it easier because of the less stress that no verb conjugations gives you.  This gives you more confidence in yourself to try and speak it more.

“The stress free atmosphere and tons of interaction and participation were very conducive to learning.  The relaxation techniques alone are worth the price. The fact that I can now feel more comfortable conversing in Spanish with my new friends and neighbors is priceless.  Muchas, muchas gracias.”

“I loved the relaxed environment.  I picked up quite a lot of new vocabulary.  I found this course very informative about how the language works, how I can make sentences and understand others better!  Muchas Gracias!  I had a call from Telcel (the local phone company) after our second class and I was able to speak and understand them for the first time. Despacio (meaning slowly) … a great word!  Everyone should take this course before they pick up bad habits.”

“I liked how simply the course was organized and the positive attitude about learning.  Thank you so much for helping me to learn Spanish!”

“I liked the laid back yet professional approach.  I highly recommend this new, relaxing method of learning Spanish,  I feel a lot more confident in the delivery of my words and sentences. It was taught in an excellent and very professional way.

“It was a very enjoyable class.”

How this Course Works in Just Three Days.

A Livescience.com article helps explain why this course works and how delegates are creating Spanish sentences by the first lunch break and can communicate well in Spanish after just three days.  This article by Jeremy Hsu, LiveScience Senior Writer, is entitled “CIA Seeks Anyone, Anyone Who Can Speak 2 Languages.”

Four important points in the article are shown in excerpts below with my comments to show what has been wrong with traditional Spanish courses and why the Super Thinking tactic is perfect for this program.

The article begins: WASHINGTON, D.C. — Many Americans don’t learn a second or a third language from birth, let alone a language that the CIA or U.S. Foreign Service might want. The situation has forced U.S. government agencies to learn how to cultivate the most talented second-language speakers from among college students with little to no other-language expertise.

“In U.S. education, we don’t develop early bilinguals,” said Catherine Doughty, a language expert at the University of Maryland.

Doughty spoke as part of a panel during the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) conference in Washington, D.C.

She and other speakers described the typical U.S. second-language program as being a series of disjointed classes where students often repeated what they had learned before.

“Imagine math [programs] where the middle school says, ‘We don’t have any idea about what you studied,’ so you learn it again. It’s the same with high school,” said Robert O. Slater, director of the U.S. National Security Education Program.

MY COMMENT.  This is why traditional Spanish courses often do not work.  They create two obstacles up front…conjugation and  memorization of vocabulary.  Super Thinking + Spanish avoids both these obstacles.

The article continues:  Finding the best.  Government agencies aren’t alone in trying to recruit multilingual speakers; U.S. corporations covet such skills for doing business in the era of globalization.

MY COMMENT:  This is why speaking Spanish adds value to each of us as a person.  We become especially useful in an increasingly global multilingual society.

The article explained how Doughty and her colleagues used tests to train up cognitive processes related to language learning, such as the ability to hold information in the brain while using it for learning.  The tests sought to predict those who can succeed despite everything stacked against them.

The article reviewed changes in the brain.  Lee Osterhout is a cognitive neuroscientist at the University of Washington in Seattle.  His lab used electrodes placed on the scalp to measure the electrical activity created by the signals of brain cells.  That allowed the researchers to see differences in the brain patterns among language learners and fluent speakers.  They found some surprising results:

The article pointed out:  Repeated studies of French language students showed that their brains responded differently to real French words compared with fake words after just two weeks of classes, even if the students themselves could not tell such words apart.

“From knowing nothing to a little bit, [there are] huge changes in the brain,” Osterhout pointed out.  “[From] knowing a little to knowing a lot, [it is] much more subtle.”

MY COMMENT: This is why Super Thinking + Spanish works.   The three day course focus is entirely on making the huge change and ignores the subtle.  From there the perfection and subtle change.  The three day course prepares the learner to speak Spanish immediately and then make the subtle changes in their day to day life.

The article also said:  Another surprise came from studies of Spanish-speaking immigrants, because neither age nor language proficiency seemed to predict how quickly the immigrants picked up English.  Instead, the fastest learners showed both the greatest motivation to learn and a willingness to use English at every opportunity despite being bad at it (at first).

MY COMMENT:  This is the other reason why Super Thinking plus Spanish works.  This three day course gets the delegates speaking and thinking Spanish all the time so they can use and/or think Spanish every day… and communicating even from the beginning.  In this way, the education grows even when Spanish is not being spoken.

The Super Thinking course first integrates the brain.  Students learn better with relaxed concentration.  Then the course teaches them 17 simple lessons so they know 4005 words in Spanish and can use them to create sentences. In this way, you can communicate in just three days.

The first tactic is to use Baroque music in the learning process. At least three best selling books, “Superlearning”, the “Mozart Effect” and “Superlearning 2000” have revealed insights about how to learn and think more powerfully based on systems drawn from the Bulgarian educational master, Dr. Georgi Lozanov.  Merri Scott was among just a few who learned directly from Lozanov when he visited the USA.

The second tactic uses 17 unique lessons to provide Spanish fluency in a short time.   Let me prove to you how this tactic works by teaching you hundreds of Spanish words in less than 30 seconds.

Here is the proof.

“Most words in English that end in ION are almost identical, just pronounced differently.  For example action is accion, education-educacion, manipulation- manipulacion, etc.”

There you have it.  How long did it take you to read the sentence? You now know hundreds of Spanish words that you will never forget.

See examples of the words you already know below.

How long would have taken you to memorize all those words?   How soon would you have forgotten them?

This is just one of seventeen Spanish lessons in the course.

The next lesson teaches how to pronounce each of the nouns.

Then, the third lesson teaches almost as many verbs, almost as quickly.

The fourth lesson shows how to avoid conjugating verbs by sticking with the infinitive (far easier than it sounds).  This simple lesson leaves a person sounding like a Spanish professor without ever conjugating a verb.

Lesson five shows how to sound infinitely polite and yet get almost anything desired in Spanish.

Lesson six gives valuable connectors and the seventh lesson triples the Spanish capacity with three words for “yesterday,” “now” and “tomorrow”.

By the end of three days you feel comfortable speaking Spanish.

Plus the system is Impro Dynamic.  This means your Spanish keeps getting better even though you do not seem to be studying… practicing… or speaking Spanish.

I was amazed by this as I traveled back and forth from the USA to Ecuador.  The longer I was away from Ecuador… the better my Spanish became. My second language was automatically improving The self improving feature comes because you learn to create Spanish sentences rather than remember them.  The portion of the brain that creates is more powerful than the portion that recalls.   When your mind creates something… it owns it!  You do not have to remember .

During the course you learn 4005 Spanish words that you already know .

You then learn how to create Spanish sentences from these words.

Throughout the course you learn how to pronounce the sentences you create.

When the course ends… the mind keeps working… and creating… so next time you begin to speak Spanish you’ll be surprised .  You improve even though you have not actively worked on your lingual skill.

Cuenca Inn Courtyard.

I recently visited Bill Dixon at his Cuenca Inn B&B located at Don Bosco and Santa Maria Streets in Cuenca, Ecuador.  This is Bill’s third project in Cuenca and shows what a beautiful creation he can make.

The Inn itself is in a large home well back from the road.  It has four good sized guest rooms, two with bathroom en suite and TVs.

Cuenca Inn

There is  a wonderful large central covered courtyard with TV, a central fire pit and lots of plants.

Cuenca Inn

TV room for guests.

A guest living room with TV and big comfortable sofas adjoin the courtyard.

There is also a small bar area just off the courtyard  that we all enjoyed.  The Inn is very well appointed and the ambiance is warm and conducive to the comforts of a home away from home.  Internet/WIFI is good and is available to guests for long distance calling, along with pyre-loaded local cell phones.

Cuenca Inn Dining Room.

At the same time I was visiting Bill, Neil and Inge (another retired couple) were there as well. We all enjoyed a great meal and hobnobbed about the state of affairs in North America for about three or four hours while enjoying a couple of bottles of wine.

The Inn has a reasonably sized, fully equipped kitchen where breakfast is prepared. Bill created a superb dinner for us all including South African style BBQ Grilled Chicken with a very tasty vegetable casserole Au Gratin and an appetizer of his own design.  We had somewhat of an argument trying to name.  It consisted of layers of corn chips, peppers, cheese, chilies, some secret ingredients and was served with a wonderfully flavored home made red pepper jelly.  We finally settled on Bill’s Deep Dish Corn Chip Pizza as a name for it.  It was sweet and spicy,  crispy and very well balanced, well received by all, as was the rest of the food.

As I said previously we sat around the fire pit enjoying the conversation and the wine until well past 11 PM.  No one really wanted to leave but Bill had engagements in the morning and eventually we had to call it a day. Since the Inn is at a fairly major cross street we had no trouble hailing a taxi back to Ordonez Lasso where it turned out Neil, Inge and I all lived.

Bill and I had originally met in Oshawa when he attended our Super Thinking / Super Spanish course prior to coming to Cuenca.  He indicated that it had been a really good investment on his part as he had acquired the language basics he needed, and it gave him the confidence to make the change in his location and his life.

He actually attended the Super thinking / Super Spanish course twice about 3 months apart. He says he was amazed at how much of the first course he remembered on the second time around. He really threw his all into the course and got a lot out of both sessions.

Maggie wrote: It didn’t really seem possible that we would be speaking and understanding Spanish in only 3 days but the Bandick’s made it happen in a very supportive learning environment.  I would highly recommend this course for anyone wishing to learn “practical Spanish”.  The teaching methods, use of relaxation, the use of native Spanish speakers for pronunciation and the teachers themselves who were approachable and helpful and always positive made this a very valuable class.

This course improved my self confidence in my ability to learn and retain a language.  It was presented with genuine enthusiasm, great energy and the style of learning is very effective. Gracias!  It was a great experience.

Nadine wrote: “Just spent the last 3 days in the most wonderful learning environment learning Spanish.  What an amazing learning experience!!  First day out of class and I could not stop thinking in Spanish WOW!!  I am amazed by how much I learned, retained and how much more is showing up now that I am out of class.  And the best part is THERE WAS NO STUDYING!! Indeed this is Super Thinking!!!  I would highly recommend this to anyone that has ever had a desire to learn another language or learn anything in record time.

And a few days after that ….  As I went through my day, just hanging out with my son, I could see myself starting to think in Spanish.  At first I thought it was amusing but as it continued and increased I thought “My goodness this is really remarkable amazing” It was really an effortless unfolding.  I wasn’t at any point “trying” to think in Spanish, just words I knew would fly across the screen in my mind.  And then this afternoon, my son cuddled up on the couch to watch some cartoons on his ipad and was watching Peppa Pig in Spanish…hmm coincidence?  I think not, I’m radiating Spanish so much that my son is being influenced!  Thanks a million again.  This weekend the best learning experience of my life!!

If you have ever had a desire to learn Spanish this is the way to do it!  By the end of the first day I had more confidence and more practical ability than I had from any previous courses I had taken.  It was fun and relaxed and full of laughter.  You will leave this class excited to use what you have learned.  Rather than leaving overwhelmed with how much you have yet to learn and master, you are equipped with the knowledge and know how to go out and communicate as well as the excitement to do it!”

Gary noted:  “The whole approach is positive and conducive to learning at a level that benefits ALL participants.  It is not intimidating and does not set up a pass/fail atmosphere.  The presenters are terrific and the results unbelievable.  It was relaxed, informal, friendly and effective.”

Twila said:  “This class provided a very refreshing and relaxed way of learning.  The atmosphere felt very safe to say the words you were practicing.  I learned a lot in a way that will make it easy to apply.  Starting with conversation is way more fun.  How quickly you can learn!  It was a great group, great instructors and great stories.

The atmosphere in the classroom was so relaxed that learning Spanish felt like a breeze and not like a painful task.  The relaxation exercises are really conducive to language learning.  We learned A LOT in a short time and it was fun and the environment was non-threatening.”

Brigitte sent this:  “Buenos Dias, Suzanne. su clase de espanol es excelente! Muchas Gracias!
I have already done what you suggested and went into the program listening to the music and going over the lessons.  I know: Repetition……reinforcement…..thinking in the new language….it’s all part of it.  I loved your course and will certainly recommend it to friends.  Who knows….I might feel the urge and have the opportunity to repeat it at your beautiful place in Puerto Aventuras…..Quien sabe? Hasta otro dia y saludos a su familia.”

Marie wrote:  “I would highly recommend this course.  The amount covered in 3 days is amazing!  All with no stress.  The correlation lessons and pronunciation practice has greatly reduced my anxiety to go out and use my Spanish.  I really enjoyed the whole process and thank you for the take away tools.”

Here is the English translation of a few of the many Spanish words you now know and will never forget.  How long would it have taken you to memorize them?  How soon would you forget?

“Most words in English that end in ION are almost identical, just pronounced differently.  For example, action is accion, education-educacion, manipulation- manipulacion, etc.”

New International Investing Era

A new international investing era could be created by a destructive scientific fundamental that is now so powerful it could overwhelm all other factors determining our wealth. This danger has such power that it could destroy most investors and much worse… end civilization as we know it.

electromagnetic-pulse

Photo from Wikepedia report on Electromagnetic pulse weapons.

The most frightening part is that this force could unleash its destruction on us… now… at any time!

I want to share what, why and when this disaster could happen.

Then, I want to share how you can be protected rather than ruined.  We’ll even see how this, with luck, could be the creator of untold wealth which you, I, and a handful of cautious, insightful investors could share.

Before I explain how to safeguard your family from this possible upcoming disaster, let me explain that I first began to understand the magnitude of the risk after reading the New York Times best selling novel “One Second After” written by bestselling author, William R. Forstchen.

The story had extra meaning for me because it shows life in a small North Carolina town (similar to where Merri and I live during the summer) after an electro magnetic pulse is detonated by terrorists over the United States.

In the story the electrical grid and anything using a computer stopped working due to an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) created by just three small nuclear devices, launched from container ships and detonated high above the USA.

Without central communication and distribution, mass devastation and chaos ensued immediately.   The agony was terrible and life almost unfathomably complicated.

What made this fiction meaningful is that the book really documents and details the West’s dangerous reliance on technological systems which are so extensive that no one even recognizes them any more.

Adding to the terror of this book is a forward by Newt Gingrich and and afterword by Captain Bil Sanders (USN) one of the foremost experts on EMP. His comment  on how an EMP exploded over the US would create the Compton effect and how it would have “devastating consequences on our country” should be examined and understood.

It was Captain Sanders’ deep understanding of EMPs that made the warning in this book so powerful.

In a moment we’ll share ways to protect against this disaster… that could happen to all of us… suddenly… at any time.

First here are three facts that you should know.

EMP Fact #1: Many countries, including the US have EMP weapons that have nothing to do with a nuclear bomb and are quite small. They essentially put out a high energy very sharp spike of energy – high frequency and very short wavelength, short duration pulse.

However it is the nuclear EMP device that creates the greatest risk.  These are nuclear bombs that DO NOT CREATE DAMAGE FROM THEIR BLAST, HEAT OR NUCLEAR FALLOUT.   Instead the weapons create an electrical wave that fries just about anything with a computer.  A survey of open sources over the past decade finds that knowledge about EMP and EMP attack is evidenced in at least Britain, France, Germany, Israel, Egypt, Taiwan, Sweden, Cuba, India, Pakistan, Iraq under Saddam Hussein, Iran, North Korea, China and Russia.

Russian and Chinese military scientists in open source writings have shown how to design nuclear weapons that generate an extra powerful EMP effect called Super-EMP that can destroy even the best protected military and civilian electronic facilities.

electromagnetic-pulse

EMP Fact #2:  This risk has grown to such an extent that America’s electrical grid is so vulnerable to terrorist attack that the Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson is pushing a bill to give the energy commission broad authority for “true emergency situations.”

This is explained in a recent USA Today article entitled “Electrical grid vulnerable to terrorist attack”  by Thomas Frank.  Here are excerpts from that article: It sounds like a science-fiction disaster: A nuclear weapon is detonated miles above the Earth’s atmosphere and knocks out power from New York City to Chicago for weeks, maybe months.

electromagnetic-pulse

This graphic is from the USA Today article linked below.

Experts and lawmakers are increasingly warning that terrorists or enemy states could wage that exact type of attack, idling electricity grids and disrupting everything from communications networks to military defenses.

An expert panel that Congress created to study such an attack says it would halt banking, transportation, food, water and emergency services and “might result in defeat of our military forces.”

“The consequences would be catastrophic,” said Joseph McClelland, director of the energy commission’s Office of Electric Reliability. Full recovery could take up to 10 years, he said.

The scenario involves a phenomenon called an “electromagnetic pulse,” or EMP, which is essentially a huge energy wave strong enough to knock out systems that control electricity flow across the country.

The immediate effect would resemble a blackout. Although blackouts can be restored quickly, an EMP could damage or destroy power systems, leaving them inoperable for months or longer.

House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., is pushing a bill to give the energy commission broad authority.

At a committee hearing in July, Steve Naumann of energy giant Exelon said the authority should be limited to “true emergency situations.”

The commission studying the threat says the U.S. is ill-prepared to prevent or recover from an EMP, a vulnerability could invite an attack.

“We are not well-protected at all,” said Michael Frankel, who was executive director of the commission.

EMP Fact #3:  If an EMP event takes place, the Western World could quickly run out of food. Here is an excerpt of a transcript of a speech given by Professor Sir John Beddington, chief scientific adviser to the British government, at the GovNet SDUK09 event.  This has become know as “The Perfect Storm” speech.

I spoke here last year at about the same time about the issue of the food crisis and the burgeoning increases in food prices that were being driven by population growth, use of biofuels and so on.

The first problem here is that we really have a major issue. This graph takes a little bit of explanation; it is the ratio of our reserves to our consumption. What it is showing is that last year is the lowest level of reserves that we have had as a proportion of our consumption in years, since 1970 and actually since records were taken of this sort.

electromagnetic-pulse

That means that we’ve got somewhere like reserves of around 14% of our consumption, that implies, give or take, 38 or 39 days of food reserves if we don’t grow any more.

As you can see, it’s the lowest level that we’ve actually had.  Is that a problem?  Well the answer is yes it is going to be a problem.  We saw the food spike last year; prices going up by something in the order of 300%, rice went up by 400%, we saw food riots, we saw major issues for the poorest in the world, in the sense that the organisations like the World Food Programme did not have sufficient money to buy food on the open market and actually use it to feed the poorest of the poor.

But this is England, not North America.  Right?

Beddingdon’s note shows that North America might not be able to rely on Europe for much food assistance and…

America’s food reserves are even worse as explained in this excerpt from last year’s article “The US has no grain reserves” published in the Tri State Observer, Milford, PA. The excerpt says:  Larry Matlack, President of the American Agriculture Movement (AAM), has raised concerns over the issue of U.S. grain reserves after it was announced that the sale of 18.37 million bushels of wheat from USDA’s Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC) Bill Emerson Humanitarian Trust.

“According to the May 1, 2008 CCC inventory report there are only 24.1 million bushels of wheat in inventory, so after this sale there will be only 2.7 million bushels of wheat left the entire CCC inventory,” warned Matlack. “Our concern is not that we are using the remainder of our strategic grain reserves for humanitarian relief. AAM fully supports the action and all humanitarian food relief.

Our concern is that the U.S. has nothing else in our emergency food pantry. There is no cheese, no butter, no dry milk powder, no grains or anything else left in reserve. The only thing left in the entire CCC inventory will be 2.7 million bushels of wheat which is about enough wheat to make 1⁄2 of a loaf of bread for each of the 300 million people in America.” (MY BOLD)

The CCC is a federal government-owned and operated entity that was created to stabilize, support, and protect farm income and prices. CCC is also supposed to maintain balanced and adequate supplies of agricultural commodities and aids in their orderly distribution.

“This lack of emergency preparedness is the fault of the 1996 farm bill which eliminated the government’s grain reserves as well as the Farmer Owned Reserve (FOR),” explained Matlack.

This is backed up by a Scienceblog article that says: “The US Government Has Zero Grain Reserves.”

In 1996, the Federal Agriculture Improvement and Reform Act of 1996 (“Freedom to Farm Act”) called for elimination of government stockpiles of grain.  I’m sure someone thought it made sense, at the time.

Now, the United States government has no reserves of butter, cheese, dry milk, barley, corn, oats, sorghum, soybeans, wheat, rice, sugar, honey, peanuts, canola seed, crambe, flaxseed, mustard seed, rapeseed, safflower seed, sunflower seed, peas, lentils, chickpeas, and cotton.  [Source: US Farm Service Agency, Current CCC Inventory (PDF file)]

The book, “One Second After”, clearly and very dramatically (but I am not sure how accurately) drives home the point that unless a person takes a unique financial stance that his finances, and maybe even his or her life, could be wiped out.   Many military and scientific studies support this monumental economic, social and life threatening risk.

Yet you do not have to ruined by EMP.  You may even find that this potential weapon will create extra ordinary wealth that a few investors will share.  Here is how and why.

First, there is no proof that an EMP event as described above would create quite the havoc mentioned above.

Here is how one scientist whom I have known for years and trust completely, explains this.

“I’m not sure how large an effect the nuclear device would have above the atmosphere — the pulse might dissipate somewhat along the earth’s electromagnetic field.  It would probably take out a lot of communications and military satellites.

“Electronic devices that are not attached to any power source and that do not have an antenna when the EMP pulse hits could survive – even better with some shielding material.”

EMPs could be the driving force for the next investing era.

Just like the nuclear threat in the Cold War…  an EMP attack may never happen.   Yet because it could… the perception of risk… has created a huge rush by many governments to develop new weapons and forms of protection… just as during the Cold War.

This site and our multi currency site have repeated many times how stock market bulls and bears are based on cycles of human interaction, war, technology and productivity.

These cycles are intricately connected with the new waves of productivity that grow from the great human platform of combat. The cycle goes like this.

An economic downturn enhances a war or threat of war. Struggles for survival in the war (like the Civil War, WWI, WWII and the Cold War (WWIII), super charge inventiveness that creates new forms of productivity…the steam engine, the internal combustion engine,  production line processes, jet engines, TV, farming techniques, plastics, telephone, computer and lastly during the Cold War, the internet.

Each new invention helped win a war.  Shifting the technology to domestic use… after the war… created a boom.

Each boom leads to excess.

Each excess led to a correction.  The correction creates an economic downturn.

The economic downturn enhances a war or threat of war.

Here we are… in the correction again… at the correct time when we should expect that another war (or threat of war such as the Cold War) should begin to build!   This latest downturn started almost exactly (1998), 16 years after the last boom began (1982)…which began after the last great human struggle called the Cold War.

If the cycle repeats, the struggle should build now due to the poor economy.

The key for spotting the greatest investment opportunities is to spot the next big invention… the technology that will spin out of WWIV.

The key is that a problem must have such severe consequences (such as losing the war and being destroyed) that all stops… all logics of return on investment are ignored.  Technology and research are pushed full steam ahead regardless of cost. The threat must be real and serious… like EMP.

There are seven steps you can take to assure that you are not destroyed by an EMP.

#1:  Move well away from the USA…. to an agriculturally based country.  This is one reason Merri and I have been active in Ecuador for nearly 15 years.

#2: Move to Small Town USA.  Our sites have been looking at the benefits of this for years and why we live on agricultural property.

#3:  Create your own source of food.

#4: Create a local source of hardened energy and communications.  This is one reason our newest real estate purchase is also agricultural property and already has a HAM radio tower installed.

#5: Keep some gold and or silver on hand.

#6: Know how to take care of your own health.

#7:  Hold some assets outside of North America.

Merri and I have already taken six of these seven steps… and are well on our way to completing the seventh step.  From this we learned one really important point.

You should not suffer in the process of  gaining this protection either.

Merri and I did not move to the country… buy our Blue Ridge farm… set up our own food supply… start our garden… buy agricultural land in Florida… get a ham radio tower… buy gold and silver… organize assets out of the US and become involved in taking care of our own health naturally because we were worried about EMPs.  We did so because we wanted to.

Chances are that an EMP attack will NOT take place.  During the Cold War nuclear bomb shelters were not required!

Yet can we take a chance?  Ignoring this risk and with no action is not the answer either.

Instead let’s share ways and lifestyle alterations that protect as they provide joy, satisfaction, better health and enhanced wealth.

You may not be able to (or want) to move your home abroad or to a rural area.   Yet gardening, even in urban areas,  can be healthy and fun.  Holding some precious metals is probably a good investment anyway.  We should be taking care of our health even when their is no threat of war.

When it comes to holding assets abroad… our multi currency course can help.

Since mankind began, every generation has endured some great threat or risk.  Yet here we are… still growing!  Only time will tell whether EMP will create havoc or the greatest new wave of wealth we have seen.  Whichever, Merri and I will be here to share the experience with you.

Galapagos Real Estate for Sale

This advertisement has been submitted by a reader for Galapagos real estate for sale… a wonderful Galapagos farming opportunity.

Galapagos-Transport

Villamil Beach Galapagos

I was really impressed by this ad because Galapagos is a pristine area where tourists and even residents are regulated but this farm is in a part of the Galapagos where even the tourists cannot go.

Here is what Mike Van Pelt wrote about the farm he has for sale.

“Galapagos”  What other word conjures up so many varied wild imaginations of fearless animals, peace and solitude, turquoise oceans with pristine island beaches, lava spouting volcanoes, and yes, Darwin?

This is a very rare opportunity to own your piece of Galapagos Paradise.

We are offering a 10 acre farm in the highlands of Isabela at a really rock bottom price.

Isabela is by far the largest of the islands in the Galapagos Archipelago, formed by the uniting of 5 volcanoes to create an island that equals a bit more than 50% of the land mass of all of the islands, 2850 square miles in total.  Its seahorse shape only adds to the charm of this enchanting island.  The population of 2,500 islanders encompasses a mix of Ecuadorians, Galapaginos, and Ex-Pats from the USA, UK, and various European countries. Its Southeastern coastal city of Puerto Villamil is a sleepy town that still has the quaint charm of all sand streets.  Puerto Villamil has begun to upgrade its appearance in the past 2 years.  There has been an addition of an embarcadero for the passenger boats.

Isabela-Docks-Galapagos

There is now sawn-lava side walks and a public square with shaded gazebo areas (which at this moment has free wifi).

Villamil Plaza-Church.

I checked this out. Isabela Island is bigger than all the other Galapagos islands combined. It is about 75 miles long and 50 miles at its widest. The total land area is 1771 square miles—bigger than Rhode Island.  These mountains that form this island were probably separate at one time and then fused in to a single mass. The most recent eruption was Cerro Azul in 1999. So the island is still rising, and Wolf Volcano is the highest point in the islands—an elevation of 5,600 feet.

Here is a Galapagos map. You can see how large Isabela is compared to rest of the islands.

Galapagos-Map

Mike continues.

This finca (farm) is about a 15 minute drive from town toward Sierra Negra Volcano National Park, in an $8 per hour taxi.  It is situated at the corner of the Sierra Negra road and the Santo Tomas road.  Electricity is present on the property (The island’s electricity plant now powered by diesel generators, is scheduled to be replaced by a solar plant that powers the entire island by 2010).

Papaya & Mango-Galapagos

Electricity to the property. See the rich volcanic earth.

A beautiful ocean view can be seen from the property.  The Sierra Negra road is in the process of being paved, constituting the only paved road on the island.

This is the beach on our island.

The island of Isabela is accessible by 4 daily flights to (and from) the island of Santa Cruz.  From Puerto Ayora board an island-hopper for a 2.5 hour boat ride to Isabela and its port city of Villamil where you will surely be greeted by one of the numerous lethargic sea lions who have claimed stake to a fisherman’s boat for the afternoon.  Although the boat ride may soon be alleviated, as a commercial airport has been started, but is awaiting additional governmental funding for its completion.  It is also possible to take a 6-passenger plane directly from Baltra airport to Isabela.

Since you must go to Santa Cruz to get to Isabela you see these views on the journey.

The activities available on Isabela are sure to please every palate with beach activities including snorkeling either from beach or from boat (as long as you don’t mind penguins, sea lions or turtles as your companions), swimming, scuba diving, and volleyball; boat/land trips around the Bay and the Tintoreras Islets off of the shore of Villamil from which much wildlife can be seen and photographed including the Galapagos Penguins, Blue Footed Boobies, Sea Lions too numerous to count, Eagle Rays, and Green Sea Turtles.

Snorkeling with Sea Lions.

Colonies of sea lions continue on their daily activities seemingly unaware that we are in their presence.

Don’t forget to look up and see the ever-soaring Frigate Birds with their red throats.  I am told that this is a birding paradise.   This is not my strong area, but if you are a birder you will know.

Blue Footed Boobie.

For the land-lovers, and nature lovers, a hike to the Sierra Negra Volcano and Volcan Chico is an absolute must, either partially by horseback or totally on your own hoof.  Either way the views, especially on a clear day, are more than breathtaking.  Then there is the geology – multi-colored lava, Pele’s tears, lava tubes, sulfur vents, and the endless black flow that is absorbed into the sea.

Los-Tuneles-Galapagos

Los-Tuneles.

On a different day plan to take in one of the lava tube caves, you will not be disappointed.  For the strong at heart, multiple-day hiking/camping trips to various remote locations can be arranged for hiking Sierra Azul or wildlife viewing in areas not accessible by the 2 roads on the island.

Cotacachi Shaman Thinking

Change, though often feared, is our friend because it opens fields of opportunity… if we can trust our intuition and integrate it with our logic.

ecuador-shamans

Here are photos I took on our last shamanic tour.

Without change, we could never progress.

Problems arise when our thought process resists rather than embraces change.  Combining our logic and intuition assures that this is less likely to happen.

Our Ecuador course on Super Thinking helps delegates learn how to absorb, retain and recall more information.  This helps improve our logic.

Delegates at a previous Ecuador Super Thinking plus Spanish course we conducted in Cotacachi.

Yet to go beyond logic we need to combine our thinking with intuition.

internet-business-intuition

Many Ecuador shamans and shamanas teach the Eagle & Condo Prophesy… a time will come when the eagle and condor fly in the skies together.   Many believe that the eagle represents logic and the condor intuition.  The prophesy says that sharing of indigenous knowledge with the technologies of science will help balance mankind.

One way to blend intuition and thinking is through intellectual gaming.

A game is a structured activity, with a set of rules. This is important… because when we game… we can create a set of rules that is beyond the norm… outside the box of logic…  so our information processing and decision making can escape the tyranny of reason.

Gaming is usually undertaken for enjoyment.  This makes gaming important as well.  When we do something fun… without risk…we do it better.  We can let our imagination soar so we can see eventualities in enjoyable, non threatening ways.

Games are formalized expressions of play which allow people to go beyond their immediate imagination and direct physical activity to see life’s potential in different ways.

When games eliminate play… they lose impact… thus the demise of professional sports which are no longer games… but business.

Gaming allows us to use disambiguation in resolving future conflicts.  This is because our future is always ambiguous… even if we think not.   Our life can take any number of  paths that lead in different directions… at any time.

This leaves us asking, “What should I do?”

Gaming allows us to create a set of out-of-the-box rules that direct us in ways we would never logically reach but can imagine.  Because it is fun and without threat… we can see future opportunity in numerous expanded ways.

One way we can game is to form ideas from our intuition. Then we apply the game’s set of rules that change the circumstances of the idea.

There are two ways to let our intuition to kick in.

One way is to let outward events kick start our intuition… such as spotting birds.

Recently I mentioned how I use the heron as an intuition initiator.

Other birds are meaningful to me also.  Doves, for example, are a sign of “Thinning the veil”.  “Crows represent “Magic & Creation.”  These concepts represent archetypes that we can apply in an out-of-the box game.

internet-business-intuition

One game that the Ecuador shamans taught us to play to increase and trust our intuition is to hike steep trails with our eyes closed.  This is the first time we received this lesson when Merri and I along with our friend, Dr. Jay Glaser, and several others hiked into the sacred Llanganatis Valley in Ecuador.  This was a narrow trail on a steep edge. What a game!

Merri and I have found Vedic Astrology an incredible help when it comes to making decisions that we cannot make with logic.

For example when our daughter Elle graduated from University in London with a degree in dramatic arts. Her question to Merri and me was “Should I go for a career in singing or go on and get a teacher’s certificate in Physical Education?” (She is a superb athlete as well as an aspiring singer.)

We all agreed that becoming a singer is a long shot. Teaching is safe. But we knew that her passion is to shoot for being a star. So how would she feel in later life if she didn’t try?

So Merri had Blaine Watson, our Vedic astrologer check her Vedic chart. The astrologer knew nothing about Elle but said at that time she had just moved into a cycle for three years when her best thing would be the performing arts, entertaining, etc. That was enough to convince us. “Go for it”, we said and we encouraged her. “You’re young, try it for three years and if this does not work then, let’s look again”.

Within a week she was picked as a backup singer with a popular English rock group.

Her first gig was before 4,000 fans! In the ensuing year she was able to meet many of her rock star heroes as work associates. This was an incredible experience for her, but as mentioned the entertainment business is a long shot. Some stars may become rich but backing vocals…so she had to work elsewhere to survive. Her “make money” jobs included handing out pamphlets, selling credit cards by phone and teaching dance at a franchised performing arts school called “Stagecoach”.

She enjoyed this experience enormously and cut a couple of great CDs with a group. Then she began to tire of being poor and looked around for a better way to enhance her wealth.  Her teaching job at Stagecoach led her to look at owning a school and at the ripe age of 23, she took the plunge.

May I say with due respect that Eleanor is the last child that we ever thought would be a business woman. No logic could have shown us this.

ecuador-shamans

On many of our shamanic tours we visit Quicocha Lake for a shamanic ceremony.

Our daughter  approached this business with incredible discipline and dramatically expanded the school. In her first year her profits were in six figures. Her second year took her well into six figures. Today at 26 she lives in a very expensive home on the River Thames. She has a new car, new kitchen, everything she wants and an income in the top 5% of the world.

Had anyone suggested that Eleanor could or would have traveled this path, all of us who knew would have laughed. Her success has been beyond logic!

ecuador-shamans

Alberto Verdezoto (in purple) leads the tour with…

ecuador-shamans

The yatchak and…

his wife.

Yet we supported our daughter’s success based on the realization that every moment there are possibilities that our logic just cannot see but that Vedic Astrology can. The inability to measure the results of astrology used to bother me enormously until years ago I read an article about Aristotle Onassis, the ultra rich Greek shipping magnate. He gave the secret of being a billionaire that helped me look beyond my logic.

“Certainly one does not need an astrologist to become a millionaire.” Then he quickly added that “to become a billionaire, it is essential.” This statement was made long ago when being a billionaire was pretty darn rare.

Onassis’ statement really struck a chord with me as my many years of residence in Hong Kong had exposed me to many businessmen who looked beyond logic. I heeded the astrological advice because the Chinese are very into what some might consider offbeat and unreal thinking, but there were more billionaires per capita in Hong Kong than anywhere else in the world!

In fact the more I thought about this, the more it made sense. To make billions one has to take enormous risks and see a big picture far into an invisible future.

We all have to make some decisions based on events we cannot totally predict, but successful billionaires make huge decisions based on enormous unknowns. It requires incredible faith to take incredible risks. None of us can see the whole picture but Astrology, albeit vaguely, helps us see the biggest picture of all. This did not matter for me anyway, as I do not use astrology as a predictive system.  I find the data extremely useful gets me to think outside the box.

ecuador-shamans

This is a fun ceremony filled with…

ecuador-shamans

beauty.

As international investors, we are forced to deal with forces beyond our understanding and control. We must find simple ways to make decisions about complicated problems, knowing that many of the facts are unknown.   We have to deal with the future in terms of our past experience.

Astrology presents a “what if” that pushes our thought process beyond past experience and encourages us to think in new ways to deal with future events.

This has nothing to do with the supernatural. This is just another simple way to add an extra dimension into your process of thought.

Ecuador Florida

This message on how Florida and Ecuador connect can help you enjoy everlasting wealth.

See how going from this view in Hong Kong from Bowen Road…

HK-waterfront

to this… brought us more than a fortune.

multi-currency-view

The leaf change has begun here in the Blue Ridge and autumn’s glorious message can help us improve our investing and business. I explain below.

Yesterday’s message, Ecuador Gold,  was about gold, good value real estate and the power of incorporating a PIEC (Personal Income Earning Corridor) in your life so you can:

1.    Do what you like.
2.    Act beyond money.
3.    Work with like minded souls.

One key to developing this PIEC is to know what you are investing in and… why.

Plato summed it up nicely about 2,500 years ago… investor… “know thyself.”

Take for example, what Merri and I knew about ourselves, as we headed south in our Honda mini van last week to look at over 20 properties in three days… a short list derived from researching hundreds of properties for sale.

Our hound, Ma, was with us… she is very happy about traveling more to Florida and less to Ecuador because she far prefers traveling in the golden rolling cave rather than being eaten (and then regurgitated) by the big, silver bird.

Merri and I were happy knowing that a common denominator between Ecuador and Florida is that each have a lot of sun at times when other places have a lot of cold!

As the autumn’s first frosts were appearing at our mountain home… we enjoyed the 85+ degree sunny weather.

A recent article entitled Ecuador Florida Connection looked at value real estate in both  Ecuador and Florida and evoked this response from a reader:  Gary, I love reading your daily emails. You are right about the many foreclosures in Florida but let me say that those foreclosures are mostly in places that would make you feel like a “gringo in Ecuador”.

I have checked on quite a few but the prices are just coming back down to what they are really worth.  Good luck in your quest !  I am trying to talk my wife into a place in Ecuador which she may warm up to a while.Maybe I can talk her into an inexpensive condo. What do have to offer preferably near the water (Salinas).

I replied: Agreed… but there is also appears to be a hole in the market for Central Fl property in the $1m to $750k range.  There are very few buyers. We have been watching prices tumble hundreds of thousands.  We are viewed one property that started at $800K+. It dropped $100K last week from $395 and is now down to $295K.  This is the sector where we are looking.

This property…

ecuador-florida

with this view…

ecuador-florida

started at $1.7 million dollars. Then Merri watched online it dropped to $1.2 million…then went to $899,000.  When we looked, it had dropped to $85o,000 and was down to $499,000 when it disappeared from the listing…foreclosed.  It is on a clear spring fed lake, has around 3 acres, all fenced, dock, boat house, large beautiful guest house, barn, pool, high ceilings and even a sauna/workout room AND in an excellent neighborhood near the historic town of Mt. Dora.

ecuador-florida

The broker that showed this house to us is Shirley Peacock at Coldwell Banker All Stars  in Mount Dora (There are two CBs in Mt. Dora).  Her email is shirley.peacock@mfr.mlxchange.com whose attitude is to help make a sale, and if it is a foreclosure or a short sale, she has knowledgeable attorneys and doesn’t flinch on these sometimes “difficult” properties.  Usually where there is difficulty, there is profitability.  We have profited by her advice and knowledge and spent a lot of time with her and had a lot of fun looking at one after another beautiful great properties.

Why did we pass so quickly on this house?  It is certainly beautiful, has excellent value and had all the qualities we were looking for…but what it didn’t have for us as much privacy that we long for…but still what a value!

We have a very defined search for good value, Florida real estate that we would like to live in.   We use the Golden Rule of Business Simplicity…  “Our desires represent the desires of many others.”

In short, the Golden Rule of Simplicity means that… “Your Passions Represent Markets.”  Figure out what you love and why and you’ll have good, strong business and investing ideas.

Expanding on this example…Merri and I love living in the sun so we know many others do as well.  This means if we buy real estate in the sun and lakefront… at a good price… there is a good chance we can sell it later for a profit.

So we are looking for places where we would like to live… in the $750,000 to $1,000,000 range where we would like to live.

Yet this is not all.

First we expect to pay much less because of this flat spot in the market. We like to go where no one else is competing.

As we expand on this example we cannot leave out the importance of knowing where one is on the diffusion curve.

To understand this better, let’s look at research on diffusion models.

A well-known diffusion study followed the spread of a new hybrid corn in Iowa in the 1930s. There were 250 farmers in the area that were observed. The goal was to see how fast these farmers accepted and switched to the new hybrid, which was superior in every way to the existing corn that the farmers had been growing.

Though this hybrid cost less gave better, more dependable crops and higher yields, not all the farmers began to use the corn at once.

Only a few farmers started using the hybrid in 1932 and 1933. In 1934 16 more switched. Then in 1935 21 more followed. 1936 saw the highest switching when 61 farmers began using the hybrid. Then there were 46, 36, 14, and 3 that switched, leaving only two of the 254 farmers studied.

In this study, the original few who began using this corn were the Innovators. These are the adventurous people who will always try anything new. Innovators start trends but do not cause the trends to take off. They instead infect the Early Adaptors 16 who in 1934 and 21 in 1935 that began using the hybrid. These are the opinion leaders in the community that will cause the trend to spread. These are people that cause the trend to really spread.

They were followed by the Early Majority (the 36 who switched in 1936), the Late Majority (61 in 1937). Finally they are followed by the Deliberate (46 in 1938 and 36 in 1939), Skeptical Mass (14 in 1940 and 3 in 1941) finally leaving only the Laggards (the two who still had not adapted by 1941).

Whenever looking at your PIEC, ask  “Where am I most comfortable in the diffusion process?”

There is potential and a risk reward balance in every part of the curve. What counts is making sure you are in tune with the diffusion position of any idea that appeals to you .

For example even laggards can find exciting niche opportunities.   In fact some times laggards find themselves turned into innovators… such as the low tech Amish Lehman’s Catalog business.

Merri and I are well aware that we lay somewhere between innovators and early adapters.  We have worked and/or lived on every continent… visited over seventy countries and rarely had a month without a flight somewhere for 40 years.

We warn readers regularly that we are usually early in and early out.

Manx-waterfront

The view in the 1970s from my flat at #5 Bowen Road was something like this… except most of those skyscrapers did not exist!   After I left, real estate appreciated 20 – or 30 times.

We were into real estate in Hong Kong, Isle of Man, London, Naples, Florida and Ecuador when the majority thought the idea was crazy.  We earned nice profits in each place but prices rose dramatically as much as ten times or more after we exited.

Manx-waterfront

Manx real estate has skyrocketed since we left this wonderful British Isle.  Many of our real estate delegates there made much more than Merri and I did, because they stayed on.  This shot and many more by Jon Wornham can be seen here.

london-house

London house prices, for homes like this, rushed upwards after I sold our Bedford Park, London house for 115,000 pounds. Today, even after the economic downturn, such a house would be in the millions.

Yet Merri and I have done very well and are perfectly happy because there are two ways to move along the evolutionary path of business and investing…. as settlers or as pioneers.

We sold this wonderful Naples, Florida home that…

Ecuador-florida

was 30 seconds walk to the beach and had a huge… glorious…

ecuador-florida

garden. We moved…

ecuador-florida

into this beat up, Blue Ridge farm house, with…

ecuador-florida

a falling down barn, half burnt house and a most gosh awful 252 acre mess, plus…

ecuador-florida

this old tin roofed house… in a really remote part of the Andes with 900+ acres of vine covered land.

ecuador-florida

Many (maybe most) of our friends believed we were nuts! (And perhaps we were and are!)

Had we stayed in Hong Kong. Had we stayed in London. Had we stayed in the Isle of Man or in Naples… we might have millions of dollars more.

We spent years redoing, reclaiming, unearthing the treasures here in the Blue Ridge and building our country house which we love during the summer and fall…but not in the winter!

Yet viewing the autumn forest at dawn from our front porch here in the Blue Ridge gives me a greater thrill than any extra bucks.

multi-currency-yard

I could not be happier because it is important for each of us to know which type of investor and business person we are.

Comfort is one of the most important aspects of successful investing. If we make investments not in keeping with our nature, we will not be comfortable.  Without comfort, we are more likely to second guess ourselves and screw up. Restlessness and worry reduce the joy of affluence and reduce our investing and business effectiveness as well.

All of us need to invest in things that we feel are right to us.

For example when we moved out here to our North Carolina farm, many of our friends in the city thought we had lost our marbles.  Yet we have loved it.   Now that it is fixed up and worth many, many times our cost, we are considering selling part of the farm and reduce our position here.

multi-currency-barn

We plan to always have some position here… perhaps less than now.

multi-currency-woods

Lance Armstrong summed this idea up in a Time magazine article when asked about who to listen to about what to do in life when he said: “The important thing is to go around (collect data-get information). Then you really start to weigh your options. Which one feels right? It may not be the right decision, but it’s what makes you feel right.”

Why when we get everything fixed up… do we want to move on? The process… the challenge… the fun of creating, is what fulfills us…. more than the bottom line.   Once we have achieved our goal we like to move on… to the next project.

This understanding is vital to your investing and business.

Know yourself.

Know that ultimately you must make decisions for yourself.  Know that you can’t know everything.

Know that not every decision will bring maximum profit, but if it feels right for you and the process is enjoyable, you improve your odds of success.

Real estate in Ecuador is steady and rising.  Ditto for the Blue Ridge. Ashe Country real estate sales may have slowed but prices have not really faltered here.

We have been investing and creating in both the Blue Ridge and Ecuador for almost 15 years.  We love each place and will continue to enjoy them… but we love the next step as well so we are reducing our presence in each and adding Florida… with of all things… agricultural property… something we have never done.

This is a new challenge we believe makes good business sense… and for us… will be fun.

Next time you plan to invest or start a business… whether in Ecuador, Florida, North Carolina or wherever… think about yourself.  Are you a pioneer or a settler?   Where do you enjoy sitting on the diffusion curve?   Make the most of the entire process… money, fulfillment and fun by developing a PIEC that allows you to do what you like and act beyond money with like minded souls.

Cotacachi Shamanic Tour

We are repeating our Beyond Logic & Cotacachi Shamanic Tour this December 6, 7 and 8, 2009 because the most successful thoughts come from Beyond Logic.

This may be why the Beyond Logic & Cotacachi Shamanic tour has been one of the must successful of our 2009 tours. Due to this demand we are repeating this course… plus adding optional Andean real estate plus a free Christmas shopping extension for December 2009.

The Ecuadorian shamanic thinking process can help us learn how to advance and prosper during this economic downturn.   Three shamanic lessons below show why. These lessons are outlined in a moment.

First may I introduce the course “Beyond Logic” conducted by Blaine Watson this December 2009.

Because the last Beyond Logic course was one of our most popular this year, we have added a three day ‘Beyond Logic” Course to be conducted in Cotacachi December 6, 7 and 8, 2009.   Ecuador Andean and coastal real estate tours will follow (more on this in a moment).

The first two days will be conducted by Blaine Watson. Here he is conducting a course here in North Carolina. He is in our teaching kitchen because nutrition is part of the course.

ecuador-shaman

Blaine’s portion of the program includes a personal reading (one per single or couple – a second reading is extra) based on your time, day and place of birth. We’ll get your birth time in advance so he can bring your chart with him. You’ll have your reading either after the course or later by phone.

Here is the course schedule.

Day One. Sunday…Dec. 6, 2009 – Blaine Watson

A detailed description of the 12 signs, the 9 planets and their significations and the 12 houses, how they come into being and the significations of each one, as the basis for interpreting the horoscope and making predictions.

Day Two. Monday…Dec. 7, 2009 – Blaine Watson

In-depth analysis of the of the planets and how to interpret and predict from their placements in the 12 signs and the 12 houses.

Day Three. Tuesday…Dec. 8, 2009 – Quantum Lessons from the Yatchaks. Delegates will visit a sacred valley near our village for a shamanic mingo…just beyond this field.

ecuador-shaman

We’ll hike in (but can also bring those who desire to come by truck) here…

ecuador-shaman

You can enroll in Beyond Logic here.

Here are the three shamanic lessons.

Recessions and depressions destroy many investors and businesses. Yet these times of cleansing are also the breeding ground for the next group of extreme rich.

Why do some succeed when so many fail?

They have different ways of thinking…gaining energy and seeing beyond the accepted logic.

No one can see the future. It is hard to be energetic and forward moving in tough times. Perhaps this is why only a few become rich and healthy.

The thought process, processing knowledge and natural health have always fascinated me as have the legends of Old Ones the “Abuelos” who live high in the Andes hiding sacred knowledge for longevity, high energy and success.

Merri and I were so intrigued that we bought Hacienda Rosaspamba, high in the Andes and lived with a Taita Yatchak and his apprentices to learn more.

Here is the hacienda and the view we enjoyed each day as we rose.

Ecuador-hacienda

The Taita Yatchak invited Merri and me to hike into the mists and clouds of the Llanganatis, the sacred valley, which legends say contain hidden Incan gold. I suspect the gold is golden knowledge…not the yellow metal!

To find out, and learn more on how to think for true success…in health and wealth, we invited friends, two MDs and a Sanskrit scholar to hike in with us. Here we are, on top of the world, starting that trek.

ecuador-shaman

The first shamanic lesson was to trust our inner vision. The picture below shows Merri and me with Dr. Jay Glaser an MD, Ayurvedic physician and Sanskrit scholar overlooking the sacred LLanganatis Valley.

Here is how we learned this lesson. The yatchak put us on a path like above. Told us to look ahead. Then close our eyes and walk the path. “Trust your inner vision,” he said.

ecuador-shaman

Here we are with the Yatchak in the jungle during that hike.

picture one

The second shamanic lesson was to purify oneself from the outside in and the inside out at the same time. Be pure in eating, action and thought. Always keep cleansing…mind and body.

For example, we stayed in an open air hut during our time in the LLanganatis. The mists there have negative ions that neutralize free radicals in the skin.

Here we are with the Yatchak and our friends at the hut.

ecador-shaman-entire-crew

We brought a Sanskrit expert because the Andean language is based on Sanskrit, a language from India. What made this tidbit special was that we were already studying Ayurved, the Indian science of life…health…pure thought.

We learned for example that the name “Llanganatis” is linked to Indian philosophy. Llanganatis means “Repeated Sacred Action” (the Sanskrit word is Yagya). This led us to a third shamanic lesson…”See beyond logic”.

This helped Merri and me understand how to use Vedic Astrology to see a bigger picture beyond logic. The Indians were able to maintain their ancient wisdom in a more refined and usable way than the Andeans, mainly because the Spanish destroyed most of the Andean Quipos, (knotted cords of different colors used by the ancients to store knowledge).

We learned to integrate the wisdom we have gained from India and the Andes to think and act Beyond Logic.

Our astrologer is Blaine Watson who has been an incredible help when it comes to making decisions that we cannot process just with logic. Blaine is an expert in the wisdom from India and Ayurved.

For example, our daughter Elle graduated from University in London with a degree in dramatic arts. Her question to Merri and me was “Should I go for a career in singing or go on and get a teacher’s certificate in Physical Education?” (She was a superb athlete as well as an aspiring singer.)

We all agreed that becoming a singer was a long shot. Teaching was safe. But we knew that her passion was to shoot for being a star. How would she feel in later life if she didn’t try?

We had Blaine check her Vedic chart. He knew nothing about Elle but said at that time she had just moved into a cycle for three years when her best thing would be the performing arts, entertaining, etc. That was enough to convince us. “Go for it”, we said and encouraged her.

Within a week she was picked as a backup singer with Modern Romance, a popular English rock group with many top hits in the UK including the theme song from the movie, “Shrek”.

Her first gig was before 4,000 fans! In the ensuing year she met many of her rock star heroes as work associates. This was an incredible experience for her and led her to buying a franchised performing arts school called Stagecoach, where see now earns hundreds of thousands a year.

May I say with due respect that Eleanor is the last child that we ever thought would be a business woman. No logic could have shown us this. Yet she approached this business with incredible discipline and dramatically expanded the school. In her first year her profits were in six figures. Her second year took her well into six figures. Today at 27 she lives in a very expensive home on the River Thames. She has a new car, new kitchen, everything she wants and an income in the top 5% of the world.

Her success has been beyond logic!

Yet we supported this success based on the realization that every moment there are possibilities that our logic just cannot see. Vedic Astrology helped us tap into a bigger picture.

The inability to measure the results of astrology used to bother me enormously until years ago I read an article about Aristotle Onassis, the ultra rich Greek shipping magnate. He gave the secret of being a billionaire that helped me look beyond my logic. “Certainly one does not need an astrologist to become a millionaire.” Then he quickly added that “to become a billionaire, it is essential.”

Onassis’ statement really struck a chord with me as my many years of residence in Hong Kong had exposed me to many businessmen who looked beyond logic. I heeded the astrological advice because the Chinese businessmen are often considered superstitious due to their belief in astrology. Some might consider their sight beyond logic, offbeat and unreal, but there were more billionaires per capita in Hong Kong than anywhere else in the world!

The more I thought about this, the more it made sense.

During economic downturns, times seem even more uncertain. Previous history is of little use so these deeper, more subtle ways of processing information become even more important.

This may be why one of our most popular courses we offer is conducted by Blaine Watson, our Vedic Astrologer. Many of our readers also use Blaine and rave about him.

During times of contraction…those who profit most are those who expand…but in the correct way. This course “Beyond Logic” can help you think better, have more energy, natural health and purity to pursue your inner vision, that sees a bigger picture of health and wealth for all.

Ecuador Investing & Business Idea

Here is an Ecuador investing and  business ideas for Ecuador or anywhere you live.

In a moment, I am going to show you how to own this 16 room hotel in Otavalo for almost nothing… maybe even free.

otavalo-hotel-for-sale

First let’s look at a business idea for this hotel… rootlessness… a growing global problem.

Problems create opportunity so there is business opportunity in rootlessness.

Technology has given mankind the ability to work, live and invest globally… a wonderful benefit.   Yet this mobility has created a problem as well.

One of my messages many years ago (2002) outlined that there would be a growing market for friendship in this modern era.

That message said: The market for friendship has to grow because technology has made society so  mobile. I for example have lost nearly every single really good friend from school.  I haven’t seen most of the friends I grew up with for forty five years. I imagine they still live in Portland, Oregon, but maybe not. They might all have become travelers like myself. Out of a six pack of school buddies, Steve is the only one with whom I keep in touch.

When I moved to North Carolina, I visited the local car mechanic named Jay Dee to have some work done on my 1986 Suzuki Samari Jeep. This is the perfect farm car but often needs work.  Jay Dee’s garage is a barn by his house and local people sort of collect around that barn to shoot the breeze, spit a little tobacco and talk over old times. “Remember old Johnny Blevins and that time he threw you in the creek,” one of them might say. “Well darn that must a been fifty years ago.”

ecuador-business

My Samari… 23 years old and only 62,000 original miles.

I love being with these wonderful mountain people and their easy going, friendly ways. They have such deep roots and ties and are comfortable and at ease with their friends. They know who they are, where they are and who their friends are because they have been with them their entire lives. These people aren’t hanging around Jay Dee just to get their cars fixed. They are enjoying a ritual of friendship that has united them since they were kids.

I love this! My friendships are scattered and far flung all over the world. I sometimes don’t get to see my friends for years!

A huge segment (much of the wealthiest) of the population no longer lives where they were brought up. They have lost touch with their roots.  The more technology removes us from our origins, the more the market for togetherness and friendship grows.

Friendship is an extension of togetherness and can develop around many themes. For the mountain folk of North Carolina or anyone who remains rooted in their birthplace the theme is mostly “down home”.

These friendships are tight and if you have ever heard the phrase “You ain’t from around here are ya, boy,” you have experienced the reverse side of this type of friendship. The implication is that with these long term, locally based friendships, the only way to be a friend is to have been there for years.

Some of the years I lived in Gloucestershire, England were spent in a tiny village named Chalford. I lived over  a local pub there, “The Mechanics Arms.” Though I was a newcomer to the area I was accepted as an old timer because of family ties. One man in his sixties, who visited the pub every night however wasn’t quite part of the crowd.

Many of the locals talked about him as the new man in town. I was surprised later to learn he had lived in Chalford for nearly thirty years!  The locals would always view him as less trustworthy because he had not been born and raised there. Childhood experiences were the basis of their deepest friendships.

Many of us will never have this type of long term familiarity friendship. We have moved around too much. This creates markets for many types of new friendships.

Networking is a form of business friendship. The theme of the friendship is scratch my back and perhaps I can scratch yours or we will both be better off scratching each others’ backs. Such friendships can be local, state or country wide or as mine span the globe. They can be very informal or very formal.

The market for formal friendships has already exploded.  Incredible growth of support groups such as AA are a sign of the momentum in the friendship market. Such groups offer a format for formal friendships and range from disease support groups to abused support groups. Each offers an organized way to have friends. The growth of these groups is not because there are more problems than thirty years ago. The growth is because of the increasing market for friendships.

We can see this trend spreading everywhere. For example one telephone company has recognized this growing trend and has successfully built its business around the idea of calling “family and friends.

This thought (that a market for friendships would grow) was correct.  We see this on the internet with one of the biggest trends being social networking sites.

A recent New York Times article, “Invisible Immigrants, Old and Left With ‘Nobody to Talk To” by Patricia Leigh Brown reveals a sliver of this problem.

Here is an excerpt from this article:   They gather five days a week at a mall called the Hub, sitting on concrete planters and sipping thermoses of chai. These elderly immigrants from India are members of an all-male group called The 100 Years Living Club. They talk about crime in nearby Oakland, the cheapest flights to Delhi and how to deal with recalcitrant daughters-in-law.

Together, they fend off the well of loneliness and isolation that so often accompany the move to this country late in life from distant places, some culturally light years away.

“If I don’t come here, I have sealed lips, nobody to talk to,” said Devendra Singh, a 79-year-old widower. Meeting beside the parking lot, the men were oblivious to their fellow mall rats, backpack-carrying teenagers swigging energy drinks.

In this country of twittering youth, Mr. Singh and his friends form a gathering force: the elderly, who now make up America’s fastest-growing immigrant group. Since 1990, the number of foreign-born people over 65 has grown from 2.7 million to 4.3 million — or about 11 percent of the country’s recently arrived immigrants. Their ranks are expected to swell to 16 million by 2050. In California, one in nearly three seniors is now foreign born, according to a 2007 census survey.

Now let’s look at this 16 room hotel in Otavalo that you can have for almost nothing… maybe even free and how it could offer a business that solves this problem.

First, let me detail the hotel and why a fabulous bargain has come up… and how this hotel can fit into the friendship market.

This  is an really good Ecuador income opportunity, a…

ecuador-banking-business

hotel for sale in Otavalo.

The owners have had this on the market for a number of years at one million dollars. We thought this price was too high and never wrote about it.

Earlier this year they dropped the price to $750,000 and offered us $150,000 commission if we sold it. I wrote then:  The owners offered us a $150,000 commission to sell the hotel. We are not brokers and do not take commission so our reply was “cut the price for our readers”!  This would place the price at $600,000… an interesting value.

$600,000 may have been interesting but the owner now just emailed us and dropped the price to $495,000.  This places the price beyond  an interesting value into the bargain range.

Plus the owners again offered us a commission.  We do not take commissions so whatever (how much commission was not clear) amount they would pay could be deducted from this price.

This makes the hotel a real bargain.

At $750,000 the commission of $150,000 was 20%.  We don’t know of course about the commission, and I didn’t want to wait to verify this because this hotel is valuable, beautiful and it could  work out at about $35 a foot on the building and leaves you the land (which right next to Otavalo market is worth a lot).

Yet there is more. I believe you can get the land and the 16 room hotel for almost nothing.

I’ll explain how below.

First: the hotel details. The hotel is right next to Otavalo Market, one of the largest tourist attractions in Ecuador.

The property has these characteristics:  Appx. 30,000 sq. feet of  land and 12,000 sq.  feet of  building in 3 apartments and 16 hotel rooms.

Property Details:  The property consists of approximately 30,000 square feet of land, with trees, gardens and many types of exotic birds.  The gardens…

are large… well groomed and…

otavalo-hotel-for-sale

have a wonderful patio.

otavalo-hotel-for-sale

Ma too likes it there.

otavalo-hotel-for-sale

There is approximately 12,000 square feet of solid brick and cement construction.

On the property, there is plenty of room for expansion and development, especially in a town where there is absolutely no land left to develop.  The building is built in the old colonial style with finely crafted hardwood arched windows and doors, rustic floor tile and traditional clay-tiled roof.  The building is constructed according to U.S. anti-seismic standards.

The owner claims this is one of the best built constructions in Otavalo—and one of the prettiest in the city!

The building boasts excellent water pressure on all four floors. (Please don’t pooh pooh this quality!) The building has a powerful, propane gas-fueled boiler system capable of producing up to 700 gallons of hot water a day.  With access to the land/building from two streets, the property has frontage on 3 streets, which have been newly paved by the City of Otavalo.

Characteristics:  16 rooms, large social area (restaurant), large working kitchen, two medium-sized apartments, one large penthouse apartment, small building in back (approximately 250 square meters) that serves as a laundry room and storage facility, which also has a full bathroom and a working fireplace.  This could easily be converted into a small rental property.  Adjacent, yet private, to the main property, and which consists of 350 square meters of our total property, is a working area and parking garage (which can accommodate approximately 6 cars), with clothes lines, and general storage area.

First floor: Consists of large working kitchen, with back door exit to outdoor enclosed pantry/food storage room, laundry area and herb garden.  There is a large dining room (approximately 2,500 square feet) with excellent working fireplace, and space to comfortably entertain 60 or so people.

Restaurant is beautiful also.

The dining room leads outside onto the tiled patio and garden where there are tables and chairs for serving and relaxing, and this area may be used to accommodate another 30 or so people.  Also on the first floor there are 8 rooms which have served as hotel rooms, each 55 X 45 feet  in size with large bathrooms.

All rooms face out into the garden and the property is in front of Mount  Imbabura.   Hundreds of hummingbirds and exotic birds roam the grounds.

Let’s look at the owner’s explanation of why they have lowered the price… then we’ll see how to get this hotel for almost nothing.

Hello Merri and Gary,  This is Margaret from Ali Shungu in Otavalo. I have been living up here on the mountain for about 6 months full time, going back and forth to the Hotel.  I feel better up here in my little house with my projects.   I have been recovering from an illness and have been in the hospital in Quito. They said that if this diverticulitis does not clear up, and it has been bad for about 6 months with 3 months of vomiting, fever, etc.,–that I will need an operation to remove it.  I’m drinking all kinds of herbs and aloe vera cactus and only boiled simple foods, and hoping to heal without an operation.  Did 2 rounds of antibiotics, might have to do more…….I will say though, that the hospital bill was not that bad in Voz Andes for all the tests that I had and treatments, etc.   I will now take care of myself more, and do more praying!  I might need intravenous antibiotics but I do not want to go back to the hospital in Quito.

There you have it… a owner whose health no longer allows them to run the hotel nor wait out a high priced buyer.

Here is how to get this 16 room hotel for almost nothing. I believe that the three apartments, if separated from the hotel and sold on their own, are worth near the price of the hotel.   I do not know the Otavalo real estate market so well…but I have seen the apartments and penthouse and they are exquisite.

If they are and if you can buy this for hotel in the $400,000 range… this means the 16 room hotel, the grounds and the restaurant are almost free.

This will require some negotiating, some work and legal work  (Ecuador lawyers are not very expensive)… but could provide one heck of a deal.

We have put our Ecuador Living subscribers in touch with the sellers.  To gain this contact information you can subscribe to Ecuador Living here.

If the hotel is not under offer, we’ll show it on our upcoming October Andean Real Estate tour.    See tour details here.

Merri and I are not involved financially in any way with this offer.  We have not looked at the hotel’s financial accounts, legal situation, titles, nor had an engineering inspection, so be sure to take all normal precautions if you are interested.  Especially look at the labor obligations you’ll absorb.

Our recommendation for those who are interested in Ecuador is to come visit first… look around… rent and stay awhile… before you buy.  One reason for this recommendation is that when you are here awhile you’ll see bargains… like this and I believe for the reasons stated that Hotel Ali Shungu is now a bargain.

Now let’s see how this creates opportunity from the problem of rootlessness.

Americans and Canadians are flocking to Ecuador.  I know.  Our Ecuador Living business is going wild.  The subscription pace has almost doubled recently and the request for rentals in this area has skyrocketed past our ability to keep up!

The demand is especially strong at the lower income level… those who are retiring and can no longer have a decent life in Canada or the US… especially in places where there is winter sun.

There people are isolated… often not speaking Spanish and with little to do.   So Turn this hotel into a residence for gringos. Provide free internet… US papers…. weekly Spanish lessons… a support program… group tours, travel assistance etc.

There is one more value.  Yesterday’s message How to Make Money in this Multi Currency Era explained how, due to the falling US dollar, Ecuador real estate has become a 10% better value since this last February.

Gary

How to Make Money in the Multi Currency Era

The US and Ecuador property market offers a rare opportunity to make money in this multi currency era. Here is an excerpt from a recent multi currency update.

Two economic forces have come together to create extra special profits.

I know because the same  combination occurred in London during the late 1970s and allowed me to increase an investment eleven times in two years by buying property then.

Earlier in 1970 I had lived in London, England for a year, then moved to Hong Kong. During that time I also maintained a home outside of San Francisco, California.

This was a time of great inflation. My homes in California and in Hong Kong appreciated greatly. In the mid 1970s, when I moved from Hong Kong back to London, I noticed that London real estate was priced about the same as it had been in 1970. This puzzled me. Why had London property prices remained flat despite inflation?

On investigation, I learned that there had been a huge real estate crash in 1970 which continued to dampen real estate prices six years later despite the rampant global inflation. I felt this was a great distortion as European property prices had risen, but London prices had not. Yet London offered the best utility as the center of the English speaking world. This, to my way of thinking, created a huge distortion.

It’s late 1976. Britain faced  a sterling crisis. In less than two years the pound has fallen from $2.40 to $1.60. Investors had no faith in the British economy, or the government that ran it. The government’s budget was a mess.  Investors  were ditching the pound.

The plummeting pound pushed the economy to breaking point. Prime Minister Callaghan, in desperation borrowed as much as possible, £2.3 billion from the IMF.

At that time, the British pound collapsed to its lowest level ever (a pound per dollar for a short time) so the distortion widened. This meant in US dollar terms London property had dropped almost 50% while property in other major cities of the western world had increased in price by three or four times.

london-house

The house I bought was right next door and very similar to this house in Bedford Park, London W4.

This house in West London was 34,000 pounds, 9,000 pounds down (then $9,000).   I took a mortgage for 25,000 pounds ($25,000).  I lived in the house and three years later the pound had recovered to 2.2 dollars per pound plus London real estate had caught up with property in other major western centers. I sold the house for 115,000 pounds or $253,000 a profit of $244,000 on a $9,000 investment.

Now it’s the US dollar that is very low.

You will have seen articles something like the the September 7, 2009 Bloomberg article “Weak Dollar? Currency, at 10-Year Low, May Fall More” by Bo Nielsen.

An excerpt says: Anyone who says the dollar is weak after it fetched a record-low $1.3681 against the euro and the fewest pence against the pound in 25 years is expressing a euphemism.

The currency may decline at least another 10 percent by the end of 2008, say Jay Bryson, an economist at Wachovia Corp., and Kenneth Rogoff, the former chief economist at the International Monetary Fund. The dollar has only fallen 3.4 percent in the past two years to a 10-year low, according to a Federal Reserve index that weighs trade with 38 countries including China, Mexico, Canada and countries in Europe. It tumbled 30 percent in the three years ended 1988.

“Dollar weakness will be broad-based and could last for years,” said Bryson, a global economist at Charlotte, North Carolina-based Wachovia who previously analyzed currencies at the Federal Reserve.

Investors are dumping dollars, lured by higher returns elsewhere. The U.S. will grow more slowly than Europe for the first time since 2001 and Japan for the first time in 16 years, the IMF forecasts. The difference in yield between 10-year German bonds and Treasuries has shrunk to the smallest since 2004.

Those who read this site regularly or subscribe to our multi currency course know that I reported my personal portfolio and recommended getting out of the US dollar in February 2009. See that recommendation here.

I showed that my portfolio was 86% out of the greenback.

My liquid portfolio currency allocation was reported as Brazilian real  4%,
 Denmark kroner  33%
,  euro 31%
, British pound 10%
, Turkey lira 8%
, US$ 14%.

I also mentioned in February that I was going to start buying Florida real estate.

So Merri and I began looking and in our research found that there appears to be a hole in the market for Central Florida property selling in the million to $750,000 range.  There seems to be no buyers at all. We have been watching prices tumble hundreds of thousands.

We are viewing one property next week that started at $800K+. It just dropped $100,000 last week from $395,000 and is now down to $295,000.

This is about a 25% drop in that house’s price in six months. That’s pretty good!

Now look at what this means in depreciated dollar terms.

dollar-chart

Here is a chart of the euro to US dollar from yahoo.finance.com from February 2009 to September 10, 2009 when this was written.

In February a US dollar bought .80 euro so that house at $395,ooo cost 319,200 euro.  Now a US dollar buys about .68 euro so this house at $295,000 costs about 200,000 euro.

That is a drop in that house price of 37% in six months in terms of euro. That’s even better!

Here is the magic in this hidden, built-in profit.  For most of the market, the profit is hidden.  Most investors are not comparing currencies and real estate prices.  Yet these distortions will filter through. Eventually European investors…. or those like me who are holding currencies other than dollars will see this distortion and cash in.

I, and now you, just have an advantage because we are always looking at both markets… currency and real estate.

Ecuador Real Estate Cheaper as Well

This also creates better value on Ecuador real estate. Take for example one penthouse property I am selling at $139,000.

This is a perfect property for those who want peace… quiet…and instant access to miles of empty, warm Pacific beach.

Ecuador beach rentals

This unit would have cost 111,000 euro in February. Now the price has dropped to 94,500 euro… just from the dollar’s fall.

The US and Ecuador property markets offers a rare opportunity to make extra profit now because of hidden added value from the US dollar’s fall. History suggests that real estate is a real asset so its price rises as the currency its counted in falls.

These corrections take time because most property owners do not calculate their property in multi currency terms.  Those of us who watch this can gain extra profit now.

Florida Ecuador Connect

Here is an important Florida Ecuador Connection.

Back in 2000 everything in Ecuador looked really bleak.  The country ran out of gas. All the banks shut down. here were demonstrations in the street.  A huge part of the population fled the country.

What an opportunity!

Having lived again and again in places where problems create opportunity… I look for trouble!   I began my business career  in Hong Kong in 1968.  There were communist riots and bombs being set off in the streets. The Chinese army was massed on the border. Life went on. We all figured out the fastest route to the British and American war ships in the harbor for a quick exit. We watched out for boxes in the street. Then we just got busy with life.  Those who stuck around and bought property and businesses made absolute fortunes.

Then I moved to London, a much quieter, safer, steadier place was expected.   Yet there were huge problems there.  The IRA started setting off bombs in the subway and around town.  They even shot some mortar shells at #10 Downing Street!  Ted Heath caused a general strike and the pound sank to $1 per pound!  The IMF was even needed to offer  economic support to bolster the pound.    I gathered my pennies and bought London real estate at the very bottom.  Those who joined me made fortunes once again.

Then during the 1980s US recession I jumped in again buying Naples, Florida real estate  that over the next 20 years skyrocketed… until it was so high… we exited. Proudly (lucky really) we sold our last condos in Naples in April 2007… just before the market began to crash.

The profits on these went immediately into more Ecuador property.

“Life goes on” is also a financial message.

If you have been in despair about our economy, you might be wondering if things can ever revive. Yes, they can and will! Life and business will be a little different, but mankind carries on. Living in the United States we’ll have to be a little more cautious but the western world will survive. Economies will continue to grow in an up and down way as they have for hundreds of years.

Once you believe this… you see troubled places with delight.

So when everything headed south and the economy tanked, I could not wait to get started in Ecuador. Merri and I created an an active Ecuador business, plus began buying property.   We bought a 962 acre hacienda, condos in the mountains, a house, a hotel, a four story office building plus condos and apartments on the beach.

This is why I am slathering over Florida.   Previous messages at this site have looked at our quest to buy Florida property again.

As I read the recent New York Times article by Michael F. McElroy “After Century of Growth, Tide Turns in Florida” I was reminded why. Here is an excerpt:  HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — The smiling couple barreling ahead on the cover of Liberty magazine in 1926 knew exactly where to go. “Florida or Bust,” said the white paint on the car doors. “Four wheels, no brakes.  So it has been for a century, as Florida welcomed thousands of newcomers every week, year after year, becoming the nation’s fourth-most-populous state with about 16 million people in 2000.

Imagine the shock, then, to discover that traffic is now heading the other way. That’s right, the Sunshine State is shrinking.  Choked by a record level of foreclosures and unemployment, along with a helping of disillusionment, the state’s population declined by 58,000 people from April 2008 to April 2009, according to the University of Florida’s Bureau of Economic and Business Research. Except for the years around World Wars I and II, it was the state’s first population loss since at least 1900.
“It’s dramatic,” said Stanley K. Smith, an economics professor at the University of Florida who compiled the report. “You have a state that was booming and has been a leader in population growth for the last 100 years that suddenly has seen a substantial shift.”

The loss is more than a data point. Growth gave Florida its notorious flip-flop and flower-print swagger. Life could be carefree under the sun because, as a famous state tourism advertisement put it in 1986,

“The rules are different here.”

But what if they are not? Or if those Florida rules — an approach that made growth paramount in the state’s sales pitch, self-image and revenue structure — no longer apply?

“It’s got to be a real psychological blow,” said William H. Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution who predicted that census data in December would confirm the findings. “I don’t know if you can take a whole state to a psychiatrist, but the whole Florida economy was based on migration flows.”
Recall what once passed for normal. Florida grew from 2.8 million people in 1950 to 6.9 million in 1970, and by about three million people each decade after that. Even during stagflation in the ’70s, Florida added about 200,000 people a year. More recently, from 2004 to 2006, Florida added about 1,100 people a day, as housing construction’s proportion of the state economy grew to twice the national average.

Now consider Broward County in 2009. The county, between Miami and Palm Beach, was one of the first areas to shrink — losing 21,117 people from April 2007 to April 2009, according to University of Florida data — and its experience offers a glimpse of what could be on the way elsewhere.

Now, we are selling several Ecuador properties to plow back into the “Sunshine State.”

I believe in Florida for one of the same reasons I believe in Ecuador… sunshine… warm weather in the winter.  This is the Florida-Ecuador connection.

I also believe in Ecuador as one of the closest to Florida, practical, low cost places to live with something even better…year round great weather!

Anyone interested in buying Ecuador property, let me know… I bought at really low prices so have some excellent real estate for sale at c0mpetitive prices.

Also if you have Florida property for sale let me know also… in the Central Florida area. (We are not returning to South Florida.)  I am looking….buying and may even swap.

Most investors traditionally run from bad times! But this very fact creates value investing opportunity. Few times has a real estate market been as badly hit as in Florida.   Ecuador real estate continues to appreciate as gringos leave the US and head for points south…but this part of the US south offers great potential now as well.

Regards,

Gary
