How to Get Ideas for Self Publishing From Hugh Howey

Here’s  how to get ideas for business, investing and self publishing from Hugh Howey.

The key to success is having good ideas and it is worth looking at how to get good ideas… especially if you want to write.

Writing is the most creative relationship we can have with others.  You, the writer sit, and create… pouring out your best. Then you send it to the mind, heart and soul of another. This is a completely personalized, one on one creation.

So where do you get the ideas?

Seven P Secrets of Self Publishing

When you write, you can work anywhere.   Here I am working poolside in the winter, at our Florida farm.

gary scott

Here I am with our hound Ma, working during the summer at our North Carolina farm.

Learn how to earn everywhere, while living anywhere you choose.  I have been able to earn by writing in Hong Kong, England, the Isle of Man, Dominican republic and Ecuador to name a few of the place I have lived.  Everywhere I have been… too numerous to share here, I have been able to work.  All I need is my laptop.

A pencil and pad even did the job before.  Freedom is just one benefit that you can gain from writing.

Another is income.   Writing has brought me both farms, free and clear… plus a lot more.

Another good example is my friend Hugh Howey.  He was working for $10 an hour in a book store when he self published his novel Wool, typing in a storage room during his lunch breaks.  Soon he was earning over $100,000 a month on Amazon.com.  This helped secure a six-figure book deal from Simon & Schuster, and an option for film by Ridley Scott, director of Blade Runner and Alien.

Hugh Howey

Sometimes Hugh and I get together at my  farm and play chess (he beats me badly).

Writers like High are great inspirations.

A couple of years ago Hugh  left Florida, and moved to South Africa.  He had a sailing catamaran built for him and now can sail the world while he continues to write.

Hugh explained it like this: And that’s the miracle of working as a writer: I can do it from anywhere and everywhere. The past few years, I’ve done a lot of writing from airplanes and airports while on business trips abroad.  SAND was entirely written overseas while traveling through seven different countries; I think it’s a better story because of those inspirations. In upcoming years, I may be writing near your home port.

Hugh’s a super star writer and his success could not happen to a more deserving and talented person.  He pours enormous energy into being worthy of his readership.  But you do not have to be a million dollar a year earner or a traveler to benefit from writing.

The good news is… you do not need a huge success to have a rich and fulfilled lifestyle.  Self Publishing can bring you a life that most people only dream of, as a journeyman writer, instead of a super star.

May I hastily add that the path to stardom begins as a journeyman… so the journeyman’s path brings success without stardom… but can also lead to stardom.

What most success stories like Hugh’s rarely explain is the many hours of writing that was devoted before their self published book sales soared.   Hugh, like me and most writers were journeymen first.  Stardom came later.

Here are sevens secrets that can help you become a journeyman writer.

The secrets are a writer’s armory of tools that allows almost anyone to create successful publications for income, freedom and fulfillment.

Take Merri’s and my publishing business as an example.

Merri and I are not writing stars.  We are journeymen who have for more than 40 years, year in and year out, earned solid income writing and self publishing dozens of publications about multiple subjects.

Some years that income has been more than solid… over a million dollars.  Yet in terms of stardom, we are hardly known.

In a moment you’ll see why that’s fine for us and probably will be for you too.

First some history.

Merri became involved in self publishing over 40 years ago… first helping a veterinarian publish a book on a very specific market… animal acupuncture. Then she showed a needle point artist how to sell more books to an even more specific audience… “needle point enthusiasts”  about her needle point work to an audience larger than the population of the city she lived in.  This led Merri to eventually become Executive Editor of an award winning magazine in Florida.

My story allowed Merri and me to work and live from Hong Kong to London to Europe to Eastern Europe, then the Caribbean and then Ecuador… making millions in the process of following our adventures… having fun… while helping a large readership adapt to a rapidly changing world.

That’s what self publishing can bring, profit, adventure and fulfillment, a great feeling of worth and wonder.

Self Publishing has created exactly the lifestyle we desire allowing us to span the world and work with meaning and purpose.

Self Publishing has become a new business art form.

The seven secrets can help you start your own self publishing business now.

Everything in publishing is new and exciting and changing.  Publishing is being recreated by the wonderful power of destructive technology.

Everything is new… except the seven secrets.

Change in the publishing industry is disturbing many.   We love this evolution due to these seven secrets we call the 7Ps.  The 7 Ps are so fundamental to writing and publishing that new technology enhances rather than reduces their power.

The First P is Passion.

Whatever your passion, you can immerse yourself in it AND create income with self publishing.  This can be your direct ticket to the kind of fulfillment you’ve always wanted.

Whether you want to travel the world or live as a recluse, work 12 hours a day or not work much at all,  you can set your schedule to succeed, if you’re willing to learn these seven secrets.

You can start part-time with any dream, passion, and budget.  Once you’ve created a product, you’ll enjoy the “multiple effect” of producing profits over and over again.

So the question is… What do you love to do?

What’s Your Passion:  An example is that thirty years ago, a client of Merri’s had a passion to help people who were in pain?  He published a series of pamphlets explaining various chiropractic disorders in very simple terms.  For example: “What Is Whiplash?”

The pamphlets contained solid information, but were simple 5″ x 7″ brochures with drawings and explanations. He sold them with a rack to chiropractors, who put them in their offices for patients to read.  These little self-published items sold year in and year out for decades.

There are thousands of ideas of this sort that can lead to big business.  It’s just a matter of defining and then acting on your passion.

Although I can work when I please and go where I wish, for me the most important reason for being a publisher is the satisfaction it brings.

I love the projects I take on, so work doesn’t feel like, well… work.

What do you love?  If you love golf, then you can write and sell publications about golf.  Love travel, fishing, dogs, dolls, or art?  Write and sell publications in these fields.

Are you concerned about crime, war, poverty or environmental issues?  You can publish information products that help reduce these concerns.

Would you like to help the world be a more spiritual place?  Publish a newsletter, write a book (or hire someone to write it for you), record a tape… publish something that enlightens people.

Whatever your passion, you can immerse yourself in it and earn income by publishing for ereaders, print on demand, CDs, lists, bound books, or any format you choose.

Be immersed in your passion and get paid well for it.

This is why stardom is not the main goal for most writers and self publishers.  Extra income, more freedom and fulfillment are usually more than enough enough.

The seven Ps are:

#1: Passion

#2: Problem

#3: Person

#4: Profitably Priced Product

#5: Prospecting Pathway

#6: Promise

#7: Presentation

The first time I exposed others to the secrets in Self Publishing was in a weekend “Writer’s Camp” seminar.  We offered the camp for $1,500. 80 delegates enrolled.  People from all walks of life attended—chiropractors, businessmen, investors, doctors, realtors, inventors, airline pilots, engineers, and housewives.

Merri and I were so overwhelmed by the response, we decided to make it available to a larger audience.  We created a written course based on our current self publishing activity called “Self Fulfilled – How to be a Self Publisher.”  Then we recorded the weekend “Writer’s Camp” seminar.

Thousands have used the course as it has evolved over the decades.

You can receive both the written course and the recorded weekend seminar, in an MP3 file, in a special “Live Well and Free Anywhere” program I am making available to you.  The normal fee is $299 for the written course and $299 for the recorded workshop.   I’ll send you both the course and the recorded workshop and my course “International Business Made EZ (also $299) all for $299.  You save $598.

We are so confident that you’ll gain from this offer that if you are not fully satisfied, simply email us within 60 days for a full refund .

These courses are not theoretical.  They describe, step-by-step, how Merri and I built a million-dollar international business and how we are running this self publishing business right now.   We use the 7Ps today just as we did four decades ago to create a strong annual income.

This correspondence course is for those who would like their own international self publishing micro business for fun and profit. If you want fun, freedom, extra income and fulfillment with your own full or part time writing or want to build your existing business, by writing to sell you can profit from this course.  The course can help who want their own business or who want to have a business together or a family business.  This is the perfect course for those who can no longer find employment, who are looking for ways to earn abroad and who wish to retire and supplement their income.

Whether you are retired, an investor, chiropractor, doctor, dentist, professional or already own your own business, this offers another way to make money, to turn your passion into profit. We guarantee that we have shared all we know to help you start and run your own international business.  Enjoy and live a life of following your Passion to Profit… through writing.

Here is a special offer.

We provide two emailed courses  “Self Fulfilled – How to Write to Sell and be a Self Publisher” and “International Business Made EZ”.

We include the “Self Fulfilled Writing and Self Publishing Course” because there are two reasons to write, when you have something to say or when you have something to sell.  In this day and age many of us want to do both, make a statement that makes the world a better place and earn something extra in the process.

Whatever your passion, however you do business, chances are you’ll be writing either to create a product or to sell a product.

You save more than $598 because you also receive a recorded webinar conducted by our webmaster David Cross (at no extra cost).

Cuenca Real Estate

Cuenca Real Estate

The Cuenca real estate market grows.

Cuenca-real-estate

Real Estate in Cuenca has wonderful architecture. Here is Cuenca’s Main Square.

Even the daily press is catching on to Cuenca and Ecuador real estate.

An article “House Hunting in … Ecuador” by Lisa Keys recently appeared in the New York Times.

Here are excerpts from that article: A THREE-BEDROOM, 3000-SQUARE-FOOT HILLTOP HOME IN CUENCA
$220,000  This rustic home — made from local bamboo, hardwood, river rock and tile — was built two years ago by a local architect. It sits on a third of an acre in the Cuenca, a Unesco world heritage site about 300 miles south of Quito.

The front door is inlaid with the local wood, called chanul. An open living room/dining area has mountain views, as well as a stone fireplace, exposed hardwood beams and posts, and a brick ceiling. Off the dining area is a 96-square-foot terrace. The eat-in kitchen has granite countertops; off the kitchen is a maid’s suite. The master bedroom is on this level, along with a second bedroom; both bedrooms have en-suite baths.

A brick-and-bamboo staircase leads upstairs to a sitting area and another bedroom, which has a sloped ceiling and a 36-square-foot terrace. The lower level has a workshop and a storage room.

The house is off an unpaved road in the Rio Amarillo neighborhood, in the foothills of the Cajas Mountains. The area, until recently very rural, is morphing into a suburban neighborhood with large homes, according to David Morrill, the home’s listing agent.

Colonial buildings, art galleries, museums and concert sites are about six miles away in Cuenca. A shopping center as well as Cuenca’s indigenous market is four miles away; the airport, with numerous daily flights to the international airports in Guayaquil and Quito, is eight miles away.

MARKET OVERVIEW

Though predominantly a local real estate market, Cuenca is becoming increasingly popular with American expatriates, particularly retirees, said Mr. Morrill, a partner at Cuenca Real Estate. They are attracted to the relative affordability, he said.

In spite of the global economic downturn, home prices in Cuenca continue to rise, in part, because of they are relatively low to begin with. Condos sell for around $700 a square meter ($56 to $65 a square foot); new construction is $850 a square meter ($79 a square foot), Mr. Morrill said. Single-family homes are $300 to $500 a square meter ($28 to $46 a square foot); new construction is approximately $500 a square meter ($46 a square foot), he added. The house featured here is more expensive than the average, at $73 a square foot, because of its unique design and expensive building materials.

North American buyers are not the only reason for the uptick.

There are some great things about Cuenca like…

The agriculture that surrounds Cuenca. Here is an organic farm in the San Joachin area of Cuenca.

Here a Cuenca flower vendor in one Cuenca’s many public markets.

Cuenca has many parks. Here is Parque de Paraiso which has walking and biking trails.

Four rivers flow through Cuenca.

Cuenca-real-estate

Yet there are more forces pushing Cuenca’s and Ecuador’s real estate market.

An article from entitled “$600 Million Earmarked by Government for New Housing projects” World Assurance Group Inc.” says: Nov 02, 2009,  World Assurance Group Focuses on Central America in Conjunction With a New Ecuadorian Housing Mandate . World Assurance Group (PINKSHEETS: WDAS) announced today that the Ecuadorian Government has recently announced substantial policies aimed to increase new home buyers in Ecuador.  New home buyers will be allowed a $ 3,960 bonus given by the Housing Ministry for a new house they purchase. It seeks to expand such support to $ 5,000 for homes with a value of up to $ 60,000.

WDAS had announced on Oct 22, 2009 that its subsidiary ANAV Holdings Corporation signed a proposal to enter into a purchase agreement for an 8.5% participating interest in a 15 hectare private housing community located at one of the leading ports in Latin America with Premier Developments. The project’s first phase is in full production and has already sold 20% of the 207 homes. The entire project including phase two will be an estimated 500 home development. Currently these homes sell for $40,000 – $80,000 price range.

Low prices…  great natural resources… colonial charm… every facility a city can possess… but not too many people are all helping Cuenca real estate grab attention.  All of this will help the Cuenca real estate market to grow.

New International Investing Era

A new international investing era could be created by a destructive scientific fundamental that is now so powerful it could overwhelm all other factors determining our wealth. This danger has such power that it could destroy most investors and much worse… end civilization as we know it.

electromagnetic-pulse

Photo from Wikepedia report on Electromagnetic pulse weapons.

The most frightening part is that this force could unleash its destruction on us… now… at any time!

I want to share what, why and when this disaster could happen.

Then, I want to share how you can be protected rather than ruined.  We’ll even see how this, with luck, could be the creator of untold wealth which you, I, and a handful of cautious, insightful investors could share.

Before I explain how to safeguard your family from this possible upcoming disaster, let me explain that I first began to understand the magnitude of the risk after reading the New York Times best selling novel “One Second After” written by bestselling author, William R. Forstchen.

The story had extra meaning for me because it shows life in a small North Carolina town (similar to where Merri and I live during the summer) after an electro magnetic pulse is detonated by terrorists over the United States.

In the story the electrical grid and anything using a computer stopped working due to an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) created by just three small nuclear devices, launched from container ships and detonated high above the USA.

Without central communication and distribution, mass devastation and chaos ensued immediately.   The agony was terrible and life almost unfathomably complicated.

What made this fiction meaningful is that the book really documents and details the West’s dangerous reliance on technological systems which are so extensive that no one even recognizes them any more.

Adding to the terror of this book is a forward by Newt Gingrich and and afterword by Captain Bil Sanders (USN) one of the foremost experts on EMP. His comment  on how an EMP exploded over the US would create the Compton effect and how it would have “devastating consequences on our country” should be examined and understood.

It was Captain Sanders’ deep understanding of EMPs that made the warning in this book so powerful.

In a moment we’ll share ways to protect against this disaster… that could happen to all of us… suddenly… at any time.

First here are three facts that you should know.

EMP Fact #1: Many countries, including the US have EMP weapons that have nothing to do with a nuclear bomb and are quite small. They essentially put out a high energy very sharp spike of energy – high frequency and very short wavelength, short duration pulse.

However it is the nuclear EMP device that creates the greatest risk.  These are nuclear bombs that DO NOT CREATE DAMAGE FROM THEIR BLAST, HEAT OR NUCLEAR FALLOUT.   Instead the weapons create an electrical wave that fries just about anything with a computer.  A survey of open sources over the past decade finds that knowledge about EMP and EMP attack is evidenced in at least Britain, France, Germany, Israel, Egypt, Taiwan, Sweden, Cuba, India, Pakistan, Iraq under Saddam Hussein, Iran, North Korea, China and Russia.

Russian and Chinese military scientists in open source writings have shown how to design nuclear weapons that generate an extra powerful EMP effect called Super-EMP that can destroy even the best protected military and civilian electronic facilities.

electromagnetic-pulse

EMP Fact #2:  This risk has grown to such an extent that America’s electrical grid is so vulnerable to terrorist attack that the Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson is pushing a bill to give the energy commission broad authority for “true emergency situations.”

This is explained in a recent USA Today article entitled “Electrical grid vulnerable to terrorist attack”  by Thomas Frank.  Here are excerpts from that article: It sounds like a science-fiction disaster: A nuclear weapon is detonated miles above the Earth’s atmosphere and knocks out power from New York City to Chicago for weeks, maybe months.

electromagnetic-pulse

This graphic is from the USA Today article linked below.

Experts and lawmakers are increasingly warning that terrorists or enemy states could wage that exact type of attack, idling electricity grids and disrupting everything from communications networks to military defenses.

An expert panel that Congress created to study such an attack says it would halt banking, transportation, food, water and emergency services and “might result in defeat of our military forces.”

“The consequences would be catastrophic,” said Joseph McClelland, director of the energy commission’s Office of Electric Reliability. Full recovery could take up to 10 years, he said.

The scenario involves a phenomenon called an “electromagnetic pulse,” or EMP, which is essentially a huge energy wave strong enough to knock out systems that control electricity flow across the country.

The immediate effect would resemble a blackout. Although blackouts can be restored quickly, an EMP could damage or destroy power systems, leaving them inoperable for months or longer.

House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., is pushing a bill to give the energy commission broad authority.

At a committee hearing in July, Steve Naumann of energy giant Exelon said the authority should be limited to “true emergency situations.”

The commission studying the threat says the U.S. is ill-prepared to prevent or recover from an EMP, a vulnerability could invite an attack.

“We are not well-protected at all,” said Michael Frankel, who was executive director of the commission.

EMP Fact #3:  If an EMP event takes place, the Western World could quickly run out of food. Here is an excerpt of a transcript of a speech given by Professor Sir John Beddington, chief scientific adviser to the British government, at the GovNet SDUK09 event.  This has become know as “The Perfect Storm” speech.

I spoke here last year at about the same time about the issue of the food crisis and the burgeoning increases in food prices that were being driven by population growth, use of biofuels and so on.

The first problem here is that we really have a major issue. This graph takes a little bit of explanation; it is the ratio of our reserves to our consumption. What it is showing is that last year is the lowest level of reserves that we have had as a proportion of our consumption in years, since 1970 and actually since records were taken of this sort.

electromagnetic-pulse

That means that we’ve got somewhere like reserves of around 14% of our consumption, that implies, give or take, 38 or 39 days of food reserves if we don’t grow any more.

As you can see, it’s the lowest level that we’ve actually had.  Is that a problem?  Well the answer is yes it is going to be a problem.  We saw the food spike last year; prices going up by something in the order of 300%, rice went up by 400%, we saw food riots, we saw major issues for the poorest in the world, in the sense that the organisations like the World Food Programme did not have sufficient money to buy food on the open market and actually use it to feed the poorest of the poor.

But this is England, not North America.  Right?

Beddingdon’s note shows that North America might not be able to rely on Europe for much food assistance and…

America’s food reserves are even worse as explained in this excerpt from last year’s article “The US has no grain reserves” published in the Tri State Observer, Milford, PA. The excerpt says:  Larry Matlack, President of the American Agriculture Movement (AAM), has raised concerns over the issue of U.S. grain reserves after it was announced that the sale of 18.37 million bushels of wheat from USDA’s Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC) Bill Emerson Humanitarian Trust.

“According to the May 1, 2008 CCC inventory report there are only 24.1 million bushels of wheat in inventory, so after this sale there will be only 2.7 million bushels of wheat left the entire CCC inventory,” warned Matlack. “Our concern is not that we are using the remainder of our strategic grain reserves for humanitarian relief. AAM fully supports the action and all humanitarian food relief.

Our concern is that the U.S. has nothing else in our emergency food pantry. There is no cheese, no butter, no dry milk powder, no grains or anything else left in reserve. The only thing left in the entire CCC inventory will be 2.7 million bushels of wheat which is about enough wheat to make 1⁄2 of a loaf of bread for each of the 300 million people in America.” (MY BOLD)

The CCC is a federal government-owned and operated entity that was created to stabilize, support, and protect farm income and prices. CCC is also supposed to maintain balanced and adequate supplies of agricultural commodities and aids in their orderly distribution.

“This lack of emergency preparedness is the fault of the 1996 farm bill which eliminated the government’s grain reserves as well as the Farmer Owned Reserve (FOR),” explained Matlack.

This is backed up by a Scienceblog article that says: “The US Government Has Zero Grain Reserves.”

In 1996, the Federal Agriculture Improvement and Reform Act of 1996 (“Freedom to Farm Act”) called for elimination of government stockpiles of grain.  I’m sure someone thought it made sense, at the time.

Now, the United States government has no reserves of butter, cheese, dry milk, barley, corn, oats, sorghum, soybeans, wheat, rice, sugar, honey, peanuts, canola seed, crambe, flaxseed, mustard seed, rapeseed, safflower seed, sunflower seed, peas, lentils, chickpeas, and cotton.  [Source: US Farm Service Agency, Current CCC Inventory (PDF file)]

The book, “One Second After”, clearly and very dramatically (but I am not sure how accurately) drives home the point that unless a person takes a unique financial stance that his finances, and maybe even his or her life, could be wiped out.   Many military and scientific studies support this monumental economic, social and life threatening risk.

Yet you do not have to ruined by EMP.  You may even find that this potential weapon will create extra ordinary wealth that a few investors will share.  Here is how and why.

First, there is no proof that an EMP event as described above would create quite the havoc mentioned above.

Here is how one scientist whom I have known for years and trust completely, explains this.

“I’m not sure how large an effect the nuclear device would have above the atmosphere — the pulse might dissipate somewhat along the earth’s electromagnetic field.  It would probably take out a lot of communications and military satellites.

“Electronic devices that are not attached to any power source and that do not have an antenna when the EMP pulse hits could survive – even better with some shielding material.”

EMPs could be the driving force for the next investing era.

Just like the nuclear threat in the Cold War…  an EMP attack may never happen.   Yet because it could… the perception of risk… has created a huge rush by many governments to develop new weapons and forms of protection… just as during the Cold War.

This site and our multi currency site have repeated many times how stock market bulls and bears are based on cycles of human interaction, war, technology and productivity.

These cycles are intricately connected with the new waves of productivity that grow from the great human platform of combat. The cycle goes like this.

An economic downturn enhances a war or threat of war. Struggles for survival in the war (like the Civil War, WWI, WWII and the Cold War (WWIII), super charge inventiveness that creates new forms of productivity…the steam engine, the internal combustion engine,  production line processes, jet engines, TV, farming techniques, plastics, telephone, computer and lastly during the Cold War, the internet.

Each new invention helped win a war.  Shifting the technology to domestic use… after the war… created a boom.

Each boom leads to excess.

Each excess led to a correction.  The correction creates an economic downturn.

The economic downturn enhances a war or threat of war.

Here we are… in the correction again… at the correct time when we should expect that another war (or threat of war such as the Cold War) should begin to build!   This latest downturn started almost exactly (1998), 16 years after the last boom began (1982)…which began after the last great human struggle called the Cold War.

If the cycle repeats, the struggle should build now due to the poor economy.

The key for spotting the greatest investment opportunities is to spot the next big invention… the technology that will spin out of WWIV.

The key is that a problem must have such severe consequences (such as losing the war and being destroyed) that all stops… all logics of return on investment are ignored.  Technology and research are pushed full steam ahead regardless of cost. The threat must be real and serious… like EMP.

There are seven steps you can take to assure that you are not destroyed by an EMP.

#1:  Move well away from the USA…. to an agriculturally based country.  This is one reason Merri and I have been active in Ecuador for nearly 15 years.

#2: Move to Small Town USA.  Our sites have been looking at the benefits of this for years and why we live on agricultural property.

#3:  Create your own source of food.

#4: Create a local source of hardened energy and communications.  This is one reason our newest real estate purchase is also agricultural property and already has a HAM radio tower installed.

#5: Keep some gold and or silver on hand.

#6: Know how to take care of your own health.

#7:  Hold some assets outside of North America.

Merri and I have already taken six of these seven steps… and are well on our way to completing the seventh step.  From this we learned one really important point.

You should not suffer in the process of  gaining this protection either.

Merri and I did not move to the country… buy our Blue Ridge farm… set up our own food supply… start our garden… buy agricultural land in Florida… get a ham radio tower… buy gold and silver… organize assets out of the US and become involved in taking care of our own health naturally because we were worried about EMPs.  We did so because we wanted to.

Chances are that an EMP attack will NOT take place.  During the Cold War nuclear bomb shelters were not required!

Yet can we take a chance?  Ignoring this risk and with no action is not the answer either.

Instead let’s share ways and lifestyle alterations that protect as they provide joy, satisfaction, better health and enhanced wealth.

You may not be able to (or want) to move your home abroad or to a rural area.   Yet gardening, even in urban areas,  can be healthy and fun.  Holding some precious metals is probably a good investment anyway.  We should be taking care of our health even when their is no threat of war.

When it comes to holding assets abroad… our multi currency course can help.

Since mankind began, every generation has endured some great threat or risk.  Yet here we are… still growing!  Only time will tell whether EMP will create havoc or the greatest new wave of wealth we have seen.  Whichever, Merri and I will be here to share the experience with you.

Ecuador Experience

Here are some thoughts on why the growing desire for experience can create profits with an Ecuador experience or investments in an experience.

Ecuador-experience

Here is an Ecuador sunrise viewed from our hotel Meson de las Flores. When the day begins in Ecuador you never know what new experience you’ll have next!

Understanding the seventh wave in the industrial revolution, the Imagination Era, can help us understand benefits in Ecuador and see how to invest better anywhere in the world.

Technology has moved humanity through numerous eras of innovation (Steam Powered – Internal Combustion Powered – Chemical/Plastics/TV/Telephone/Jet Powered – Electronics powered and Information Powered). Each era made society more efficient. New modes of productivity changed the way we eat, work, sleep, live, practice religion, politics, gather our families, spend, etc. Now we are headed into the Imagination Era.

The information era has peaked. We can still make money in Microsoft and the .coms but the really easy, big billions were all made before 1998.  These peal of each era lasts 30 years or more and we are about a decade into the Imagination Era.

In the Imagination Era, whatever can be is automated.

In the Imagination Era, excellence and value are taken for granted.   Automated assembly lines that turn out low cost, highly usable, dependable products are growing. Innovations in production are taking place very quickly within industry.

In the Imagination Era, the story reigns king! People buy products based on the story behind the product. Consumers want experiences more than things.

Ecuador-experience

For example our September Super Thinking Spanish Course coincided with Imbabura’s Indigenous Corn Festival. Our delegates were rewarded with the experience of a Cotacachi parade and…

Ecuador-experience

the…

Ecuador-experience

Corn Queen.  These are not…

Ecuador-experience

small parades.

In the Information Era, values  are even more important than the economic value.

We can see the Imagination Era every day.  Eras do not start and stop in a day. We still have textiles and foundries, railroads, airplanes, etc. Airlines and car manufacturers still exist (though we have just seen a shakeout with Internal Combustion Era businesses).

The Imagination Era has been forming for some time. Chances are it will rise even faster and sharper than all those in the past and the peak is near.

Ecuador-experience

Here’s a Corn Princess.

One example is seen in this excerpt from a recent New York Times article entitled “Disney’s Retail Plan Is a Theme Park in Its Stores” by Brooks  Barnes and published October 12, 2009: The Walt Disney Company, with the help of Steven P. Jobs and his retailing team at Apple, intends to drastically overhaul its approach to the shopping mall. Jim Fielding, president of Disney Stores Worldwide, leading a tour, says, “It’s time to take risks.”  At a time when many retailers are still cutting back or approaching strategic shifts with extreme caution, Disney is going the other way, getting more aggressive and putting into motion an expensive and ambitious floor-to-ceiling reboot of its 340 stores in the United States and Europe — as well as opening new ones, including a potential flagship in Times Square.

Disney Stores, which the media giant is considering rebranding Imagination Park, will become more akin to cozy entertainment hubs. The chain’s traditional approach of displaying row after row of toys and apparel geared to Disney franchises will be given a high-tech makeover and incorporated into a new array of recreational activities. The goal is to make children clamor to visit the stores and stay longer, perhaps bolstering sales as a result. Over the next five years, analysts estimate that Disney will spend about $1 million a store to redecorate, reorganize and install interactive technology.

“The world does not need another place to sell Disney merchandise — this only works if it’s an experience,” said Jim Fielding, president of Disney Stores Worldwide. (Bold is mine)

Steve Jobs at Apple is helping with proprietary information about Apple’s successful stores, and his message is “Dream bigger”.   There is great  interactivity — parents will be able to book a Disney Cruise on touch-screen kiosks while their children play.

Ecuador is perfect as a place to experience new adventures, lifestyles and ways of life because the population includes one of the most highly successful indigenous populations who have integrated their ancient culture with the Western economy.

Ecuador-experience

Another Corn Princess.

These parades go on for hours…

Ecuador-experience

with wonderful floats, bands, music and  dancers.

Ecuador-experience

When looking for places to invest, visit or live, we can go beyond Disney… and enjoy the benefits of this era’s desire for experience.

Our course delegates were delighted.  So when  you come to Ecuador be ready for adventure and something new.  You ever know what wonderful experiences you’ll enjoy!

Retire & Earn Abroad

Here is another reason to Retire and & Earn Abroad.

Yesterday’s message on lifestyle and Ecuador diversification was really backed up by Uncle Sam quickly!

Whether you retire in Ecuador or anywhere outside your home.. you want diversification. See why below!

retire-in-ecuador

One benefit of retiring in Ecuador is that it can help the poor there.

Yesterday’s article worried about weather change being called a threat to national security and wondered if this concept could further erode human rights.

I never imagined the very next day we would have even more concern… yet an article by James Risen in the New York Times entitled:  “U.S. to Hunt Down Afghan Drug Lords Tied to Taliban” must give us pause.

Here is an excerpt:  WASHINGTON — Fifty Afghans believed to be drug traffickers with ties to the Taliban have been placed on a Pentagon target list to be captured or killed, reflecting a major shift in American counternarcotics strategy in Afghanistan, according to a Congressional study to be released this week.

United States Marines on a recent raid in Helmand Province. Under a new policy, drug traffickers are subject to being killed.

United States military commanders have told Congress that they are convinced that the policy is legal under the military’s rules of engagement and international law. They also said the move is an essential part of their new plan to disrupt the flow of drug money that is helping finance the Taliban insurgency.

retire-in-ecuador

Part of our work at Meson de las Flores was to continue a policy at our hotel to feed the poor. We always keep a pot of nutritious stew on the stove and our less fortunate are welcome any time of the day.  Above is one of our regular guests.

The problem is that the erosion of rights creeps upon us in small steps… like income tax. When to raise revenue to fund the Civil War, an income tax was introduced in the United States with the Revenue Act of 1861. It was a flat rate tax of 3% on annual income above $800.

When the idea was contested on concerns that the tax, once established, would grow, one Congressman stated that there was no way the population would let the tax ever be higher than 3%.   Yet a year later  flat tax this was replaced with a graduated tax of 3-5% on income above $600 in the Revenue Act of 1862.

This act made tax temporary ending in 1866.  Regretfully, perhaps, in 1866, income tax collections reached their highest point ever, over $310 million.  This made the tax popular and today we can see the effects of the small steps… one freedom eroded at a time.

So where does the legal right to kill drug dealers lead?  If it is legal to kill Afghan drug dealers to disrupt the flow of drug money that finance insurgency, what about drug dealers in Mexico that are financing insurgency in the US?  Can we kill them too?  If so, how about if we catch them in the US, can we kill them there?   If so what if they are US citizens or residents?  Can we still kill them?  Can the army become involved… in the name of national security?  Do they have to check a person’s passport before they shoot the drone at them?

These are tough calls, but somehow making it legal for the army to kill non combatants seems like a small step in the wrong direction.

retire-in-ecuador

Merri and I visiting a village that our foundation supports… helping the old and supporting the young by improving their school.  This is a fulfilling retirement activity.

Yet loss of rights is not the only reason we might want to live or retire in Ecuador or elsewhere, full or part time, for diversification.

The rising cost of living makes it difficult to retire in the West.  Plus though taxes are rising… benefits for those who retire are not.

A recent BBC article “Pension age could rise further” shows how the rot in England has grown. An excerpt says:  The state pension retirement age could be increased further, the UK’s pensions regulator has told the BBC.

David Norgrove said rising life expectancy meant millions of people would “undoubtedly” have to wait longer in future to draw a state pension.

People will not save as much for retirement as in the past, with many people “frightened” to do so, he said.

The state pension age is due to rise to 68, and Pensions Minister Angela Eagle said there were no plans to raise that.

Currently, the state pension age is 60 for women and 65 for men, but four years ago Lord Turner published a report calling for it to rise to 68 for everyone by 2044.

But Mr Norgrove said he thought it would end up higher.

Mr Norgrove said: “People are going to have to work longer, partly because we’re not going, as a nation, to save as much for retirement as we did in the past.” He added: “The government’s recent legislation is increasing the state retirement age progressively to 68. I think it will end up higher than that.”

retire-in-ecuador

Part of our program is to get readers who retire in Ecuador involved helping the poor.  We also offer roses and donate the proceeds to help people like this charming woman.  See more about her, and how the roses help, here.

Another reason to retire in Ecuador is that business opportunity seems to be rising there as it falls in the north.

A recent USA Today article. “Business bankruptcies up 240% since 2006”, by Christine Dugas outlines a US retirement and lifestyle problem.  Here is an excerpt of that article:

Entrepreneurship and new small businesses are supposed to lead us out of the recession, just as they have in prior downturns, right?  Sure.

Your neighbor’s grand idea will persuade a bank to lend her start-up money; she’ll open for business in six weeks; and money will immediately flow from customers to her to her employees. Taxes will be paid, and the national economic engine will hum effortlessly in no time. If only.

Today shows a different reality: Commercial bankruptcies are surging. Fewer people are starting small businesses, and firms already open are struggling under changing consumer habits, a lack of funding options and tougher bankruptcy laws. If a nationwide trend seen since January holds true, more than 300 businesses will file for bankruptcy today alone.

The first five months of this year have shown a 52% increase in the total number of commercial bankruptcy filings (36,106) compared with the same period last year (23,829), according to the Automated Access to Court Electronic Records. On average thus far in 2009, some 350 commercial enterprises file for bankruptcy daily an increase of 240% from 2006, the first year after the bankruptcy law was changed.

Major corporate failures, like GM and Chrysler, flash across front pages and websites. But the vast majority of commercial bankruptcies, which are not separated by size of firm by data keepers, are filed by entrepreneurs and small-business owners, says Robert Lawless, professor of law at University of Illinois.

Troubling for the economy, say Lawless and Todd McCracken, president of the National Small Business Association, is the double-whammy of fewer start-ups and increasing bankruptcies.

“In the past, small-business formation increased in a recession because people had self-employment thrust upon them,” he says. “One avenue out of economic hard times self-employment has become less attractive, because the bankruptcy law is less forgiving” and there are fewer options for those entrepreneurs to get bank loans or to find funding elsewhere.

Small business is considered the backbone of the economy. In the past, new businesses led economic recoveries, McCracken says. Small businesses  those with fewer than 500 employees  make up half of the gross domestic product and account for most job growth.

Problems from the devastated housing market, overall recession and suffering major industries all funnel down to small businesses, especially those that supply the troubled corporations.

Household spending cutbacks reach far, too. Dual-income families who are now single-income may no longer need or be able to afford child care, so many of those services are going out of business, says Lester Thompson, a bankruptcy lawyer in Dayton. Sporting goods stores and lawn-mowing services also have struggled.

Small-business bankruptcy filings jumped the most in the Los Angeles and Chicago metro areas, according to Equifax. But even smaller areas of the country are experiencing a big increase.

Many small businesses owe so much money to creditors that there is no future. Such owners often file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and shut their businesses for good.

The credit crunch is a major contributor to the rise in filings.

Loan dollar volume from the U.S. Small Business Administration has increased 35% since the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act was passed on Feb. 17, according to the SBA. Even so, a National Federation of Independent Business trend report states that in May the percentage of business owners reporting that loans are harder to get rose to 16%, the highest reading since the 1980-82 recession.

With that reality, and loath to dip into their retirement savings, struggling small-business owners have few options other than bankruptcy. When the bankruptcy law changed in 2005 it was mostly aimed at curbing abuse of personal bankruptcy filing. But it also singled out small businesses for harsher treatment, and those changes did not apply to larger corporations, Lawless says.

Bankruptcy is still the only option for many small-business owners who are hanging by a thread.

This is why the idea of living or retiring in Ecuador or elsewhere, at least part time,  for diversification and global earning potential makes sense because opportunity is growing elsewhere.

retire-in-ecuador

Nothing makes our retirement problems diminish faster than helping those who have even greater needs.

An excerpt from a recent Wall Street Journal article “Ecuador’s Business Confidence Index Up” by Mercedes Alvaro says: QUITO (Dow Jones)–Ecuador’s Business Confidence Index, measured by Deloitte and Touche, surged 5% in May to 93.2 points, compared with May 2008, the company said in its monthly report.

Deloitte said the index recovered by 31% in May against April, returning to the levels registered during the last quarter of 2008.

The Index’ recovery is largely due to the waning perception among executives of a deterioration of the country’s economic and political conditions, it said.

Deloitte found that 45% of those surveyed are less optimistic about the economy compared with April, while 52% perceive no change.

The slow but steady increase in oil prices and the revival of the global economy are grounds for expecting that the economy in Ecuador could improve by year’s end or in early 2010.

Questioned about the performance of their businesses, 34% said they had lower sales compared to the previous months and 39% reported revenues down on the same period of last year.

The survey found 20% reported a reduction in their workforce compared to the previous month.

Around 57% of the business leaders surveyed said that the country’s socio-economic situation makes it difficult to attract foreign investment.

Blue-ridge-mountains

We should help our neighbors at home as well. This is why we are developing environmentally sensitive, sustainable programs to encourage value-added, employment in the Blue Ridge as well.

I have written many times about the benefits of retiring in Small Town USA for lifestyle diversification as well. See more on lifestyle diversification at Inspired to Retire

We can see below why diversification remains important even if we retire in Ecuador.

Just because we want to live or retire in Ecuador does not mean that Ecuador does not have its own creeping erosion of rights problems as well.  An August 3 news.Yahoo article says: Correa: Ecuador to take over radio, TV stations.  QUITO, Ecuador – Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa says “many” radio and TV frequencies will revert to state control due to what he’s calling irregularities.  The president has been at war with Ecuador’s news media since taking office in January 2007. He has called TV stations and newspapers corrupt and mediocre, and twice fined an opposition broadcaster.  Correa did not specify Monday what sort of abuses or irregularities broadcasters have committed. Nor did he name any alleged offenders.

An August 5th update on this matter in the Wall Street Journal says: Ecuador Govt Braces For Reaction To Radio, TV Takeovers

QUITO (Dow Jones)–Ecuador’s government is expecting “strong reactions” to a report that will determine which television and radio stations will revert to state control.

Antonio Garcia, chairman of Ecuador’s National Radio and Television Board, said Wednesday that a report will be issued next week on which stations the government will take over.

President Rafael Correa’s government has alleged that a number of stations received their broadcasting concessions illegitimately and said that “many” would revert to state hands.

Correa’s announcement came on the heels of the government of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, the Ecuadorian president’s close ally, shutting down 34 privately-owned radio stations last weekend.

An initial report by an Ecuadorian government commission last year found that 236 of 1,637 frequencies had obtained their concessions illegally.

Garcia brushed off what he called “alarmist accounts” that all radio and television stations will revert to state control and that the government is looking at them on a case-by-case basis.”

He said that some media outlets, however, are “trying to misinform” viewers and listeners.

We’ll stay tuned to what happens with this takeover  at our Ecuador Living  Service.

Ecuador Diversified

Ecuador is a great place of diversification.

I often get letters from readers like this.

Dear Gary, I have noticed that you have mentioned (a few times) that you and Merri are not residents of Ecuador —– and you do not want to become residents. Would you be kind enough to explain what brought you to this decisions?  Thank you,

My first reply is always “grandchildren!”

Plus there is a limitation. When you become a resident you cannot be out of Ecuador more than  90 days per year during the first two years of your residency.  Merri and I have not been in one place that long for 40 years.

This is our unique quirk.  We are very mobile people… have four homes and move around a lot.

Every person has a unique set of circumstances.  Our relationship with our God, family and purpose in life should be the first determining factors that shape a lifestyle including where we live.

Yet if I did not have grandchildren in the US, I suspect that Merri and I would be living in the same way we do in the Blue Ridge and Ecuador with diversification.

If you have been reading my site for long you may know that since I wrote my first book, Passport to International Profit in the 1970s, my mantra has been to have what I call a “Six Point Command Posture” which is to:

Live in one country
Bank in a second country
Invest in many countries
Earn in two or more countries
Use a company incorporated in a fifth country
Take a second residence

Why diversify and have two places of residence?  The answer is to have options.

Things could go wrong in Ecuador. My impression is that Correa is nowhere as bad as the Western press make him out to be… yet if I am wrong… or some other bad event takes place in Ecuador that makes it unsuitable for us, Merri and I have an option.

I do not want to be stuck with everything invested in Ecuador… or any one place anywhere.

So why be in Ecuador at all?  We love the people… the year round sun… the easy way of life… the access to a holistic natural lifestyle and the low cost of living.

Plus frankly, I am as concerned that things could go wrong in the USA.

There are a number of fundamentals about America that are scary to me.

By now almost any thinking person can see raging inflation looming ahead.  They can see the US dollar falling.  Yet there are many more American problems I keep my eye on… like the loss of our basic rights.  Take for example the rule that the US military cannot operate in police actions on US soil.  This is a good rule… yet look at this.

I don’t have a lot of respect for the daily press. There is too much meaningless, bad news that seems slanted towards helping a few.

For example I have been watching the press building a Swine Flu scare since the beginning of the year.    They are at it right now with… “watch out for swine flu this fall.”   The press, knowingly or not,  is preparing the public to buy into swine flu vaccine.. good for pharmaceuticals… but maybe not so good for the individual.  Whether the press publishes this type of stuff because fear sells papers or for some hidden agenda, I do not know.  I am not a conspiracy theorist… but I do know that history suggest that no republic lasts in a state of harmony for very long.

So I read with great concern an August 8 article in the science section of the New York Times entitled “Climate Change Seen as Threat to U.S. Security”  by John Broder.

Here is an excerpt from the article:  WASHINGTON — The changing global climate will pose profound strategic challenges to the United States in coming decades, raising the prospect of military intervention to deal with the effects of violent storms, drought, mass migration and pandemics, military and intelligence analysts say.

Such climate-induced crises could topple governments, feed terrorist movements or destabilize entire regions, say the analysts, experts at the Pentagon and intelligence agencies who for the first time are taking a serious look at the national security implications of climate change.

Recent war games and intelligence studies conclude that over the next 20 to 30 years, vulnerable regions, particularly sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and South and Southeast Asia, will face the prospect of food shortages, water crises and catastrophic flooding driven by climate change that could demand an American humanitarian relief or military response.

An exercise last December at the National Defense University, an educational institute that is overseen by the military, explored the potential impact of a destructive flood in Bangladesh that sent hundreds of thousands of refugees streaming into neighboring India, touching off religious conflict, the spread of contagious diseases and vast damage to infrastructure. “It gets real complicated real quickly,” said Amanda J. Dory, the deputy assistant secretary of defense for strategy, who is working with a Pentagon group assigned to incorporate climate change into national security strategy planning.

But a growing number of policy makers say that the world’s rising temperatures, surging seas and melting glaciers are a direct threat to the national interest.

What concerns me in this article is that it could be a warning shot that more American rights are about to be violated.

The implication is that  anything to do with  climate change could be viewed as a threat to national security and that more normal, democratic rights to … privacy… presumption of innocence… right to an attorney etc.  will be reduced in the name of climatic national security.

I hope I am wrong about this.  If not, is there anything I can do about this?  Not much… but live in a positive way that is as good for as many as is possible. I can do my best to be ethical and prepare, so if living conditions shift badly in the US… there is always Ecuador.  Or vice versa. (See more on ethical investing below).

I doubt things will get so bad in the US that I would not want to live here anymore.

I doubt things will get so bad in Ecuador that I would not want to live there anymore.

If I am wrong, I doubt even more, that things will get so bad in both places that I will not want to live in one or the other of these societies.

Just in case, here is a photo from my passport.  This is the stamp you get when you are allowed to reside permanently in the UK.

I can always live in the UK and from there, anywhere in the European Union.

This also fits into our lifestyle as we have children who live in England and expect to have grandchildren living there some day.

The point is I have options because I am diversified. Yet the options fit my particular lifestyle.

The US is central to all my family.  The US is a country I love and know and as a US citizen have certain rights.

Ecuador is 3 hours and 45 minutes from the US and as mentioned we are fulfilled by being in Ecuador for many reasons.

Ecuador gives us great weather in the winter and we love the people and the place. Ecuador is not a bunghole we have chosen because  we dislike or fear some other place.

I repeat. The six point command posture is to:

Live in one country
Bank in a second country
Invest in many countries
Earn in two or more countries
Use a company incorporated in a fifth country
Take a second residence

Let’s take this one step further. To have a fulfilling six point lifestyle posture:

Live in one country you love.
Bank in a second country you really enjoy.
Invest in many countries you would like to explore or feel good about.
Earn in two or more countries you would like to explore or feel good about.
Use a company incorporated in a fifth country that best fits your circumstances.
Take a second residence in a place where you love and want to be.

We live in a time of incredible opportunity and freedom. There are probably dozens of places where each of us could enjoy living, investing and doing business.  There is no need to look for the one perfect place.  In fact, such a Utopia probably does not exist.

There are however many places like Ecuador where you can enjoy living full or part time and gain lifestyle diversification.

Also do not look for the perfect place to live, or the one and only business to do or the best investment of all forever.   Our circumstances and countries, institutions and relations change.

Diversification gives us a greater ability to change too.

The greatest asset for diversification is the ability to earn wherever you live and to keep your investments safe.

This is why we offer our course Tangled Web… How to Have an Internet Business.

A clear mind and healthy body are also a vital assets… plus a second language is a powerful diversification tool.

Ecuador & Bank Privacy

Bank privacy no longer exists. Some years ago I wrote about the insidious tactics that the US and other governments have used to erode financial privacy and personal liberty and pointed out that the problem is that the government does not attack the individual but puts the pressure on the overseas financial institutions. The current additional move by the US government to collect tax is just one more small step.

The quote above might make it seem like I was years ahead of the curve writing about the loss of privacy some years ago.

Actually I was way ahead of the curve because that quote comes from one of the earlier articles posted at this site on July  13, 2000. See that July 2000 article.

However,  may I remind you that the sunshine not only always shines somewhere, it always rises everywhere… every day!

Yesterday’s message looked at Ecuador sunrises and sunsets.

The sun also rises here in the USA.  I took these shots at our farm and…

ecuador-sunrise

and near the farm on the way to the Farmer’s Market.

ecuador-sunset

Glorious.

We live in a quantum world.  Those earthly laws that Newton so accurately described really do seem to work with apples… yet science suggests that our world is not so predictable… every moment… every place contains infinite potentiality for change… something different… something new… something good… or bad.

There are wonderful aspects of living in most places. This is why Merri and I live in Florida, the Blue Ridge and Ecuador.

This is why I have been warning readers since the 1980s to never… ever… hide wealth.  Use legal means of attaining privacy.

These warnings have related mostly to Americans, British and Germans.  These have been the most determined and aggressive taxing authorities.

These warnings have been is a good thing too.  Here is one reason why.

A June 17, 2009 New York Times article entitled E-Mail Surveillance Renews Concerns in Congress shows even deeper concern, explains how bank privacy is really dead.   An excerpt from this article (a link to the entire article is at the end of this message) says:.

The National Security Agency is facing renewed scrutiny over the extent of its domestic surveillance program, with critics in Congress saying its recent intercepts of the private telephone calls and e-mail messages of Americans are broader than previously acknowledged, current and former officials said.

The agency’s monitoring of domestic e-mail messages, in particular, has posed longstanding legal and logistical difficulties, the officials said.

Since April, when it was disclosed that the intercepts of some private communications of Americans went beyond legal limits in late 2008 and early 2009, several Congressional committees have been investigating. Those inquiries have led to concerns in Congress about the agency’s ability to collect and read domestic e-mail messages of Americans on a widespread basis, officials said. Supporting that conclusion is the account of a former N.S.A. analyst who, in a series of interviews, described being trained in 2005 for a program in which the agency routinely examined large volumes of Americans’ e-mail messages without court warrants. Two intelligence officials confirmed that the program was still in operation.

In short not only is bank privacy dead… privacy is dead… morte… gone…finito.

These warnings seem to include Ecuador as well.

Two recent messages, one Ecuador & Banking about new Ecuador financial reporting regulations, and the other Ecuador & Social Security US Social Security regulations relating to those who live and work abroad.

These messages evoked a number of responses from readers asking “How would Ecuador’s tax man know what wealth I have abroad?” and  “How would the Social Security administration know  if I earn in Ecuador?”

My reply is “I do not know how they would know… but I do not do it and do not recommend this because one never knows what will happen!”

There are so many ways the future could be revealed us… but let me give you a clue of just one example where someone hiding wealth could be caught.

My last two Ecuador Living updates outlined details about Ecuador Bank ATM fraud where over 40 people had their accounts cleaned out and how the Ecuador banks immediately made the losses good.   See these updates as an Ecuador Living subscriber.

If there was a cooperation between US and Ecuador authorities investigating this fraud… details of earnings in Ecuador could end up in the US (including SS admin) and details of US wealth could end up in the hands of Ecuador authorities.

We are in a new era of privacy that I have watched unfold during 41 years of doing international investing and business.   Half a decade ago, this site sent this warning in an article The Ultimate Form of Financial Privacy

One should not hide money abroad and rely on bank privacy to protect them. Forget about government attacks. These are bad enough but I cannot begin to tell you the horror stories I have crossed in the past three decades in which bank privacy was blown by bank errors. For example, a London bank mistakenly mailed me the secret bank account of an Iranian diplomat who was hiding money in London. A Viennese banker inadvertently faxed me four pages of private information that could have put several people in serious trouble.  Even a Swiss banker once left his client list with names, addressees and account numbers laying on a table at a seminar were I was speaking with him!

In addition to the onslaught of governments to reduce privacy, there are just too many ways for your wealth to be revealed to use secrecy as a wealth protection tool.

Look for legal ways to keep your financial affairs private instead.

This is why, our friend and attorney, Joe Cox,  joined me and Jyske Global Asset Management (JGAM)  at the recent International Investment Seminar in Naples  Florida.

bank-privacy

Last month Merri and I co-hosted this  seminar with JGAM. Here is Thomas Fischer opening the seminar.

This is why Ecuador’s new financial reporting law and why the overseas Social Security regulations do not bother me much. This is just one more issue to deal with in an increasingly crowded and complicated world.

So let me reiterate what I have been writing for decades.

Bank privacy is dead.  Do not try to hide money.  Use as many legal tactics as you can to preserve your wealth…always keep it legal. This is a never ending game and the opponent… taxation authorities play hardball and they play rough.

Here are three valuable contacts who can help you maintain legal bank privacy.

Joe Cox, our friend and US attorney.

Floridalva Zambrano, our friend and Ecuador attorney.

Thomas Fischer, our friend and overseas banker.

Plus keep your perspective. The sun shines somewhere everyday. It is the sun we should seek… not to avoid the clouds.

Merri and I love our life in the Blue Ridge… the rushing streams and…

The greatest benefits to living globally  are broadened horizons… larger families, expanded experiences… deeper awareness of the infinite ways that beauty in life can unfold… not tax or privacy benefits.

Don’t diminish all the beautiful  sunshine with clouds of financial worry.

Ecuador Capital Gains Tax

Ecuador Capital Gains Tax

Ecuador capital gains tax is not due on occasional property sale profits.

This is another Ecuador earning idea… fixing up properties… like this.

This can be profitable. Plus these profits can be tax efficient as well.

In Ecuador there is no capital gains tax on the occasional sale of real estate… so you can take a property like this…

Cotacachi condos

fix it t look like this…

Cotacachi-condos

and sell it without incurring income or tax tax liability in Ecuador.

You may still incur tax liability in your country of residence or citizenship. For example if you are a US citizen you may have US capital gains or Alternative Minimum Tax liability.

This is why it is of utmost importance that you consult a tax attorney on such matters.

In fact it now more important than ever to have legal advice (US citizens at least) when you bank and do business abroad.

For year’s we have advised readers of the advantages of investing, business opportunity and banking opportunities abroad.

The main benefit is greater opportunity.  This is the era of the global economy and those who invest globally have the greatest opportunity. This is the story we have been preaching for 41 years this May.

For example right now the US property market is quite slow. Ecuador’s market is strong.

Banking abroad provides access to more experienced global investment knowledge and the ability to execute global investments and business more efficiently.

Another benefit is added asset protection.

I regularly get notes like this from readers who are professionals and in business…

“Gary, I continue to be bothered by an unjust lawsuit that is actually  extortion.  The legal fees are crazy. Such is the legal system now that even when you are totally innocent, you lose even if you win.”

When you invest and do business globally, assets held correctly abroad are safer from seizure via civil action.

However, we have also continually warned of the great risk of doing global investing and business  without good legal advice. Monday’s message looked at the importance of making sure that you use overseas banks in the correct way.

An excerpt from a recent article in the Financial Times entitled “Swiss agree to relax bank secrecy rules” points out the importance of this advice.

The article says:

BERNE, March 13 – Switzerland agreed on Friday to relax its strict bank secrecy rules and co-operate more on tax evasion in a last-ditch attempt to fend off a global crackdown on tax havens that is rattling the offshore banking industry.

In a landmark statement, the Swiss government said it would embrace standards for tax cooperation and exchange of information set by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, meaning more information on suspected tax evaders will be shared with other countries.

”Banking secrecy does not protect tax crimes. International cooperation on taxes has become more important given the globalisation of financial markets and in particular against the background of the financial crisis,” Swiss president and finance minister Hans-Rudolf Merz told a news conference.

A decision on Thursday by tiny offshore rivals Liechtenstein and Andorra to adopt more tax co-operation has put even more pressure on Berne.

It comes on the heels of moves by other centres, including Singapore, Hong Kong, Jersey and the Isle of Man, to open up.”

An article in the New York Times outlines the focus importance that taxing authorities have placed on tax havens.  The article was about how US President Barrack Obama acted as a mediator during a recent tense meeting between The French President Sarkozy and Chinese President Hu who were arguing about tax havens during the Group of 20 meetings.

The article said:

“Mr. Sarkozy wanted the big communiqué produced by the Group of 20 to endorse naming and shaming global tax havens, maybe even including Hong Kong and Macao, which are under China’s sovereignty. Unsurprisingly, Mr. Hu was having none of it. He appeared angry that Mr. Sarkozy was effectively accusing China of lax regulation, and that the French leader was asking China to endorse sanctions issued by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, a club of wealthy nations that Beijing has yet to join.

According to accounts provided by White House officials and corroborated by European and other officials also in the room, Mr. Obama escorted both men, one at a time, to a corner of the room, to judge the dispute. How about replacing the word “recognize,” Mr. Obama suggested, with the word “note?”

The result: “The era of banking secrecy is over,” the final communiqué said. “We note that the O.E.C.D. has today published a list of countries assessed by the Global Forum against the international standard for exchange of tax information.” Hong Kong and Macao did not appear on the list.

In other words, be global by all means… but make sure you have a local attorney who helps you do everything legally and correct.

The attorney I use is Joe Cox.  You can reach Joe at jcox@coxnici.com.

Back to the fixer uppers.

If a person spends time in Ecuador  and stays alert, they’ll see many incredible fixer upper bargains.

Just over a year ago, Merri and I bought the four story office building shown above.   We began cleaning it up an converting two floors into condos.

I could sell these for double what I paid… and still have the two downstairs floors… though they are not for sale.

Construction costs are low. Local craftsmen are handy.  They’ll do things you ask.  So we can afford to use great tiles in the kitchen but keep costs down.

This was the third floor… the kitchen especially…

was a mess.

Where we had huge walls we said…”How about windows with a view?”.   The builder  figured out what height was needed to see Mt. Cotacachi and simply knocked the window openings in the walls. Then he built hardwood window surrounds that frame this view.

These units are available for rental on a three, six or 12 month lease by the way.

Fixing up has property provided Merri and me with sopme nice extra profit… that is totally tax free in Ecuador. Though our last Ecuador fixer upper profits did create some US tax liability.

In these times of change the best ways to gain opportunity are with real estate, commodities, stocks and your own business.  For those who want to live full or part time in Ecuador and earn extra tax efficient profits, that avoid Ecuador capital gains, consider buying and fixing up Ecuador property.

Florida Investment Seminar

Here are some multi currency ideas about financial fat that we’ll focus on at the May 29 to 31 JGAM Florida Investment Seminar.

Here is an excerpt from our next multi currency lesson that we’ll focus on at the JGAM Florida investment course.

These are confusing times for many investors, but a bit of simple logic can help clear away the fog… because life…and hence economics… up and down… is orderly.

We cannot always predict the exact position of this order in what appears to be disorder… but we can understand the nature of order and make assumptions that are reasonably certain.

James Gleick, a science reporter for The New York Times, wrote about this in his book “Chaos”.  He used weather, stock market and fluid dynamics forecasting as examples of understanding the orderliness in chaos.

The weather, he wrote, is created by the earth’s atmosphere, which consists of familiar simple gases and water vapor, is nothing but a complicated mechanical system of a kind that should be calculable by the familiar rules of mechanics, he wrote. Knowing its state at one instant – say now – it should be possible to calculate its condition at some future instant – say in 10 minutes or even 10 years.

Yet such predictions elude mankind. Numerical weather forecasting is valuable but meteorologists can hardly hope to do better than a 10- or 14-day forecast by computer.

We never know what will happen with the mountain weather here in Cotacachi for example.   These photos taken from our condo show that some times the mountain is clear.

florida-investment-course

Then moments later it disappears behind clouds… nobody knows.

florida-investment-course

The innumerable weather patterns created by mountain meeting air defy exact prediction.   However the assumption created by this sunrise over the mountain is…

florida-investment-course

Red in the morning, shepherds take warning.

Gleick calls the answer  the paradox of the butterfly’s wings that says there is an infinity of potential weather that is beyond Man’s ability to measure.

Really small differences in the starting points of mechanical systems can lead to huge differences in their conditions some time later. Nobody can be sure that a butterfly somewhere does not cause a disturbance of the atmosphere that when magnified with the passage of time becomes a hurricane somewhere else.

This leads us to fractals, which are the small parts… the starting points of  systems such as an economy, stock or currency market.

Ours is a fractal universe… fractal world… with fractal manifestations reated by fractal molecules.

The late Michael Crichton’s book “Jurassic Park”, explains this when one of the heroes says: “Fractals are everything!” – meaning that all of the creation, from macrocosmic scale down to quarks follows the same rule of organization. A rock resembles larger pieces of rock in its structure and form, and ultimately it
looks pretty much like the mountain that it is forming.”

Every part of existence… and hence all economies are built of  smaller and smaller and smaller, but similar parts.  Hence the saying, “as above.. so below.”

So an economy built by fat sick people… living in a fat sick society will tend to be a fat, sick economy.

This allows us to make some assumptions… that… we can be fairly certain of.

Nature abhors a vacuum.  Thus nature abhors too much fat.  Nature is efficient and stores energy everywhere.  If there is too much energy in one place (fat is just stored energy) and not enough in another…  there will be an energy exchange.  We see this all the time… wind… lightening… flood… heart attack.

If nature abhors a vacuum it means that nature abhors excess as well.

So, when an economy gets too rich…  when a person becomes overweight… when the atmosphere fills with water vapor.  Everything slows down… there is resistance… there is vulnerability.   There will be change that equalizes the situation.

We watch this on the coast where the ocean (instead of the mountains) meets the air.   One moment our beach will be hot and crystal clear.

florida-investment-course

This is a guarantee that clouds will soon appear and most of the sunbathers will disappear!

florida-investment-course

Yet when the rain comes exactly.. we cannot predict exactly.  However a common wisdom is correct here also.  The fishermen will be ready when they see this sunset shot I took at our Vistaazul condos because…

florida-investment-course

Red at night… sailors delight! Here they go… next morning heading with confidence to sea.

florida-investment-seminar

One investment manager I know states this common wisdom simply by saying,  Periods of high performance are always followed by periods of low performance.

Because the Western mindset is dominated by a linear rising view… the Western economic model runs on rising expectations.   The entire economic revolution that started  late 1700s has been fueled by expectations of  better lives ahead.  Farmers moved to factories and sweatshops.  They saved, educated their children who expected even more from value added careers.  Nation after nation grew  better. giving the less attractive lifestyles to poorer countries.

Yet a liner upwards continuum is not nature’s way.  High performance is the result of low performance.  Life is an up and down process so the false expectations of humanity leads society to place demands on elected leaders to violate the laws of nature… to add layer after layer of fat.

Humans can delay some universal forces changing the timing but not the overall results.  For example the chart of the Dollar adjusted Dow below which I refer to often shows 1998 was a year when markets should have had an economic correction.

florida-investment-seminar

1920 to 1945 was one cycle.  Over exuberance(too much fat) in the 20s led to a mid cycle crash. 1945 to 1968 was the next.  This cycle ended in the early 1970s when Western countries experienced an economic recession. This was blamed on oil embargoes.  The reality was it was time for an economic fast.  The next cycle that began after the 1970s recession should have ended with a downturn around 1998.

Yet societies propelled by expectations of upwards only lowered interest rates and took steps to create a real estate boom…pushing up paper prices and creating the illusion of greater wealth… a bubble… that took a 10 years to bust.

We are now paying the price of that ten year extension.

This downturn differs from the correction of 1932. That correction took place when the economy should have been on the rise. The correction came just because the upside rose way too fast.

This correction may be less harsh because it is simply the downside catching up.  The economy may now be below where it should have been had the correction not be delayed.

This thought enhances my recent suggestion to do nothing in shares now.

We may well be near the bottom. Sell now ad you may miss the recovery plus you’ll sell when spreads are high thus losing even more.

Instead seek value in sales short term bonds in strong currencies.  Here is what to look for.

In the shamanic mingo you will learn how the concept of fractals is part of the ancient sacred geometry that leads us to where we should be. The shamans belive that the mountain we grow up viewing is our mother (Pacha Mama) who guides us on our life’s way.

This never made much sense to me until visiting our daughter, son in law, grandkids and my 86 year old mother.

Each day I walked out my mom’s front door (she has lived in the same house for 50 years) and enjoyed the view where I grew up.

Mt-cotacachi

Mt. Hood…Pancha Mama. Something was gnawing at me…where had she led me? I missed the connection.

Mt-cotacachi

The equivalent geometry at Mt, Cotacachi that I now see each day from my Cotacachi front door.

This did not hit me until we took mom to our favorite beach…our historical escape on Oregon’s coast. This shot as I looked down the beach made me think about this more.

Mt-cotacachi

Because the geometry is so like our beach escape in San Clemente, Ecuador.

Ecuador Banking & Currency Excerpts

Ecuador banking for gringos can be made easy.

You can use banks like this without even opening a bank account.  We’ll see why in a moment.  First…

First this is day three in Ecuador health week.

Ecuador Health Tip #3  is to simply eat more simply and eat less.

Good nutrition is a vital part of good health. But what nutritionally is right?

Having lived around the globe, I have learned so many schools of thought on nutrition (starting with McDonald’s my primary food provider when in high school and I’m still paying for that bad habit) to shamanic Andean nutritional routines., that my head spins when I think about it. Plus Merri and I nrolled in a doctorate degree program (not for the degree but the knowledge) on holistic nutrition.

Program for Health

The problem is, the more one reads, the more the experts seem to contradict themselves! Some say eat raw, others only cooked. Some say something is good others bad and the list of conflicts goes on and on.

Many of them are right, but the crunch is they are only right part of the time, or in some instances or only if an entire program is followed. And of course, most of them don’t take into account body types, which for us is of utmost importance.

Merri’s and my program for health falls into three categories-nutrition, exercise, consciousness and purification. The three parts are so intertwined that one cannot look at any one of them totally alone.

These categories wrap around themselves in every material and consciousness aspect of health. For example, what we watch on TV is a consciousness aspect of nutrition. Our entire being has to digest what we watch, see and hear. So what we see is a type of nutrition. What we see, hear, smell, feel and taste as we eat (and even before a meal) also impacts the digestion of food. Digestion works with every sense and affects the nutrition we receive.

So the rule of KEEP IT SIMPLE seems to be one that almost all the systems I have blundered across agree on.

Certainly a secret of slowing the aging process is do not eat too much!

This sounds so simple but the fact is almost every diet book in the world tiptoes around this simple fact. Many claim you can eat as much as you want on a diet. Rubbish. The only way that scientific research has ever shown to live a longer life is by cutting back calories.

Biologist Siegfried Hekimi learned how to lengthen the average lifespan of tiny transparent worms from 15 to 20 days (the equivalent of increasing a human lifespan from 75 to 100) and confirmed what many scientific studies have found. There is a link between metabolism and lifespan. Eating less can slow the metabolism down.

Our Andean shaman stressed this fact in many ways.  As mentioned in tip #2, I once asked him his most important rule for nutrition. “Eat only on an empty stomach,” was his reply.

This is hard to do if you eat too much. Your blood sugar rockets (from all the food). This causes your adrenalin to kick in to keep the blood sugar in balance. This causes the blood sugar to plummet. This makes you hungry way before the body has had a chance to digest its meal.

There are more reasons. The body is very adept at confirming to our circumstances by creating habits. We eat a lot and the stomach is stretched. The body worries about this and grows the stomach. The bigger stomach instills the habit for more food to fill it. Habits are hard to break except because we are subject to the law of diminishing returns, we want to eat more and more and more.

That’s a universal rule. Let’s look at some specifics. The Andean nutritional system keeps a good fat, protein carbohydrate balance. The Andean shamanic health diet  does not mix sweet with salt. They avoid fermented foods and divide foods into three group: sweet, savory and neutral. You can mix sweet and neutral or salt and neutral but not sweet and savory.

Melon and pineapple are only eaten alone. The Shamanic way is to have light sweet meals morning and evening and full savory meal at noon.

Keeping life simple makes sense when it comes to Ecuador living and banking.   This excerpt of a full report on Ecuador banking, just sent to our Ecuador Living subscribers shows why. Here is the excerpt.

Ecuador’s currency is the US dollar so no currency exchange is required coming or going.  This makes banking easy to begin…but how can one operate money wise on a day to day basis.

There are several ways to bank in Ecuador without having an Ecuador bank account.

Let me add to begin.  I do not trust Ecuador banks. I  lost a fair amount of money in Ecuador banks when they crashed in 1999.  Once bitten twice shy.  plus it is hard for anyone without a resident visa (which Merri and I do not have nor desire) to open an Ecuador bank account.   There are better ways.

One way is  to use ATMs.  Merri and I never had an ATM card in the US but found that this is a good way to access cash here. We also have a safe in all our rooms in Meson de las Flores. Most  hotels  offer free safety deposit boxes so when we arrive, we just put all our cash, wallet with credit cards and passports in our safe box. Then we just have a bit of cash like $20 or so in our pockets.

Ecuador ATM’s

Merri and I live off of ATMs in Ecuador for our day to day cash needs..

ATM’s are in almost every village in Ecuador and are compatible with international credit cards.

Visa credit cards work at ATMs operated by Bank of Guayaquil, Pichincha, Produbanco and Banco Pacífico. Each ATM shows the logos of which cards can be used on that machine. We use our regular ATM cash card issued by our Florida bank at this Bank of Pichincha branch (shown above) on Cotacachi’s second smaller plaza.

Ecuador-multi-currency-plaza

The plaza is pristine because it is maintained by the bank.

The bank is next to the police station and the second smaller Cathedral.

Ecuador-multi-currency-atm-cathedral

Bes ure to see further on what they are doing behind the bank.  There are two Cathedrals in Cotacachi and one bank…a nice ratio.

However there are three Cotacachi ATMs. The other two are on the main street 10th of August. Here is one of them…the newest of the three.

We are allowed to take $500 a day from the Pichincha ATM and $300 a day from the others.

Jyske ATM Banking in Ecuador

One nifty way to combine global investment management bank and your cash needs in Ecuador is through Copenhagan with Jyske Bank’s VISA debit cards.

This card makes it easy to access cash from your Danish bank account.

Why a Danish bank?  As mentioned earlier I do not trust Ecuador banks. On the other hand Danish banks are among the safest in the world.

First let’s examine safety.  How safe?

In recent years Denmark has been rated by Standard & Poor’s as one of the safest country in the world in which to bank.

Jyske Bank is well established with a history of over 100 years. Jyske is Denmark ’s second largest bank, with 450,000 clients in Denmark and over 30,000 abroad.

Jyske Bank has over 23 billion euros in assets and also happens to be one of the leading currency traders in the world. Many other large banks use Jyske to handle their off hour currency positions. This means that Jyske is huge when it comes to multi currency activity. In fact their turnover reaches $50 billion dollars a day.

Bank Safety Point #1: A recent Yahoo Canada article shows a survey by the World Economic Forum listed five safest countries in which to bank.

Canada
Sweden
Luxembourg
Australia
Denmark

So Denmark is a safe place to bank. Now let’s look at Jyske Bank’s safety rating.

Bank Safety Point #2: On October 10 2008, Moody’s affirmed Jyske Bank’s long-term Aa2 rating. This decision came despite the deteriorated economic prospects in Denmark, particularly in respect of the property market.

Bank Safety Point #3: Also on Friday 10 October 2008, the Danish Parliament passed a bill that secured all deposits and unsecured claims against losses in Danish financial institutions. The rating of the Kingdom of Denmark is Aaa/AAA with Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s respectively.

The people at Jyske are common sense bankers. They had minimal sub prime exposure when that scandal broke. Jyske had zero Madoff exposure.

That’s safe!

How about service?  First of all,  Jyske can manage your wealth. For anyone with $50,000 or more to invest Jyske can buy, sell and hold investments from all over the world, stocks, liquid assets, bonds and commodities. They provide full managed or advisory only services.  They even lend in multiple currencies to leverage investments for investors with $100,000 or more.   Almost no bank in North or Latin America can do this.

Once you have Jyske caring for your wealth, they can then provide a steady stream of cash when you need it…via a global debit card.

Jyske Ecuador & Global Service.

Even US clients who have managed accounts at Jyske Global Asset Management  (JGAM) can have a VISA debit card.

JGAM opens a specific on demand account with Jyske Bank so funds can be made available via the card.

These cards can provide access to cash anywhere in the world…including Ecuador.

Here is Cotacachi’s third ATM.

cotacachi-road-work

Jyske offers three different cards to match different needs.   Each type of card provides considerable flexibility.

You can choose to have the card denominated in a number of currencies based on your choice.  An account is created at Jyske bank in the same currency. No matter the account currency,  the cards can be nominated in euro, US dollar,  British pound, Swiss franc, Swedish or Danish kroner.

If you have have dollars invested and are drawing dollars in Ecuador, you can eliminate forex costs by nominating your card in US dollars.

For more information US investors contact Thomas Fischer of Jyske Global Asset Management at fischer@jgam.com

Non US investors contact Rene Mathys of Jyske Bank at mathys@jbpb.dk

Keeping your investing simple in these complex and difficult times can also be easy as the excerpt below form our multi currency course explains.  Here is the excerpt.

Inflation…to be or not to de… Deflate that is. That is the question…we must answer to invest correctly in the days ahead.

I lean further towards inflation over deflation each day.  We can see it coming…governments (led by the USA) spending so much money they do not have, that currencies lose purchasing power.

Here is another inflationary note from the New York Times in an article yesterday that said:

President-elect Barack Obama plans to include about $300 billion in tax cuts for workers and businesses in his economic recovery program, advisers said Sunday, as his team seeks to win over Congressional skeptics worried that he was too focused on government spending.

The legislation Mr. Obama is developing with Congressional Democrats will devote about 40 percent of the cost to tax cuts, including his centerpiece campaign promise to provide credits up to $500 for most workers, costing roughly $150 billion. The package will also include more than $100 billion in tax incentives for businesses to create jobs and invest in equipment or factories.

This may seem like really good news for business, but bad news for the US dollar and hence inflation.   Spending that is not matched by production is inflationary.

For most people, this is bad.

Yet inflation creates fortunes for those of us who know what to do.

There are three ways to profit and stay ahead of inflation. Multi currency investments in distorted shares….distorted commodities and distorted real estate.

TO KEEP MY GLOBAL INVESTING SIMPLE, I BREAK DOWN MY INVESTMENTS INTO THREE PORTIONS, personal…pension…and property.

Yesterday’s lesson looked at my current personal investments to see how I am reacting to this scenario.  We saw that our current asset  breakdown in our personal liquid portfolio is:
Cash Accounts 36%
Bonds 64%

This cash and bonds have a currency breakdown of

Canadian dollar       9%
Euro                         18%
British pound          3%
Hungarian florin   19%
Norway Kroner        9%
NZ dollar                   9%
Sweden kroner       26%
US dollar                   8%

We asked …why all cash and bonds if I believe in inflation?

You may even wonder more when you see  my pension portfolio breakdown.
The asset breakdown of my pension liquid investments are:

This portfolio is more aggressive than my personal liquid portfolio, with shares, emerging shares and emerging currencies.

You can see my pension portfolio breakdown and why I  keep the investments with the lowest potential profit in my personal account since profits and the high risk investments in my pension as a Multi Currency Portfolio Course

Until next message, may all your money be easy to access in a simple way!
