Having a purpose created micro business enhances the chances of income longevity and is especially satisfying when it empowers others in the process.

With this thought in mind we started our Super Thinking + Spanish teacher program last year and began training our first dozen teachers.  This year after 12 months of  training they began to set up their own courses and teach.

We are using the stories of success (and failure) in our online continuing education course “Eventful Business – How to Have a Seminar Business”  Here is an excerpt from a recent lesson.

Shawn and Suzanne Bandick taught their first course in Mexico last month.

In 2001 Suzanne and Shawn set out on a quest for adventure and a change of culture. They packed up their two kids, and moved from British Columbia, Canada to Mexico. Their  children, now young adults and in search of their own adventure and careers have moved back to Canada but Shawn and Suzanne keep their home base in Puerto Aventuras on the Caribbean coast of Mexico just south of Cancun.

In Canada, they built and trained sales and marketing teams for companies.  They traveled extensively for business and with their children for pleasure. Then came the question, “Why do we work so hard just so we can go travel? Why don’t we just go and live abroad?”  Two years later they liquidated down to what would fit in their Toyota 4 runner and headed south.

Once in Mexico, Shawn opened a real estate office which was another fun adventure making tons of new friends and helping them live their dreams.  Suzanne became a writer and a life coach.

The Beginning

Because we ran into such huge price resistance with the people who were left here at this time and we really wanted to teach a class – we priced it at a special one time introductory locals price.

Everyone was given the same price.

At this time we have four couples and one single registered and paid for a total of nine people.

Two couples paid US dollars to us through Paypal and the rest paid in person in the equivalent in pesos.

It’s great because now we have pre met everyone who will be attending. Everyone is thrilled and grateful for the price and will be walking talking local testimonials for us.

We have no cost for a room as we are holding it in our condo. Even with the purchase of an easel and paper and copies and our Spanish native speaker we will have a nice profit.

Which we are very happy with for a first effort in slow season. Also, we have built up interest for the fall for all that are unable to take it now as they are no longer in town.

After Day One

Wow! Wow! Wow! How happy we are. How rewarding. All 9 students showed up on time, ready and excited. They were all fully participating. Our pronunciation coach is outstanding … and it turns out a neat printer. He worked with us like we have been working together for years. He has perfect clear, concise pronunciation.

Our condo set up great for the class. The day was perfect we had sun on the ocean in the background.

Everyone left day one seeming pretty empowered. Oh and one fellow (who has only been here about 4 months) had his pronunciation change from really bad and struggling at the beginning of the day to showing a really remarkable improvement by the end.

How cool is that?

Students brought me flowers!

Our Spanish speaker was smiling all the time and told us he was very happy to be a part of something so empowering and fun.

He could see the lack of stress on peoples faces and at the end told us he was amazed we found a way to teach such long days without people being bored.

I also can’t say enough of how well it turned out that we decided to hold this class in our condo.

A slight challenge this time of year in Mexico is most of the foreigners that live here part time have gone home. We knew that when we set the date but we really wanted a class under our belts and to make some money.

We also held the class Thurs/Friday/Sat as we ran into several people who were hesitant to come because Sunday is a church day.

By altering the date by one day we got two more couples to commit.

Everyone prepaid even if it meant we met them for a coffee.

Everyone was thrilled and grateful for the price and now will be walking talking local testimonials for us.

Costs:  We had no cost for a room as we held it in our condo. This worked very well with the addition of some folding tables we had or borrowed placed behind existing couches.

We provided tea, coffee (we had attendees make it as we do not drink coffee) water and snacks (granola bars, oranges, bananas, and some squares I baked) for break time and they went out for lunch.

Our condo actually provided a very personal and relaxed atmosphere. We believe this worked in our favor.

We are very happy with this for a first effort in slow season. Also, we have built up interest for the fall for all that are unable to take it now as they are no longer in town.

What do we get from networking?

We get possible students and definitely new friends. This has turned out to be a very rewarding exercise indeed.

We have a book recommendation: Yes Man by: Danny Wallace … it is the story of a man who decides to say yes to everything. It reminds me of the opportunities we created by getting out and networking.

We have one class planned right now for Canada this summer but are working on possibly two more for while we are there simply by networking with friends and acquaintances.

We also have one more class planned for Mexico in November but have let everyone know if they can pull a group together we will consider a class at any time. We collect names all the time.

After experiencing the full rewards of teaching one class – you bet we want to do more. So many people need this! We are empowering people.

Fluency in a language is considered to come when you know 1,200 words. To prove that it is possible to gain this and much more, let me share just one of the 17 tactics Merri taught me that gives you thousands of Spanish words in less than three minutes.

Here are the thousands of Spanish words lesson #1:

All words in Spanish and English that end in ION are almost identical,  just pronounced differently. For example action is accion, education educacion, manipulation, manipulacion, etc.

Now you already literally know hundreds of Spanish nouns. This is just one of seventeen Spanish lessons you gain. The next lesson teaches you how to pronounce each of these nouns. Then you learn in a third lesson almost as many verbs, almost as quickly.

Third, you learn how to avoid conjugating verbs by sticking with the infinitive (far easier than it sounds). This simple lesson leaves you sounding like a Spanish professor (believe me I know as I use this tactic every day when in Ecuador).

There are many other lessons. For example lesson five shows how to sound infinitely polite and yet get almost anything you want in Spanish. Lesson six gives you the valuable connectors and the seventh lesson triples your Spanish capacity with yesterday, now and tomorrow.

By the end of the three day course you will feel quite comfortable speaking Spanish without stress!

In simple conversations, such as buying groceries or ordering a meal, I can make myself understood. A Livescience.com article helps explain why this course works and how delegates are creating Spanish sentences by the first lunch break and can communicate well in Spanish after just three days.   This article by Jeremy Hsu, LiveScience Senior Writer, is entitled “CIA Seeks Anyone, Anyone Who Can Speak 2 Languages”

Four important points in the article are shown in excerpts below with my comments to show what has been wrong with traditional Spanish courses and why the Super Thinking tactic is perfect for this program.

The article says: WASHINGTON, D.C. — Many Americans don’t learn a second or a third language from birth, let alone a language that the CIA or U.S. Foreign Service might want. The situation has forced U.S. government agencies to learn how to cultivate the most talented second-language speakers from among college students with little to no other-language expertise.

“In U.S. education, we don’t develop early bilinguals,” said Catherine Doughty, a language expert at the University of Maryland.

Doughty spoke as part of a panel on Feb. 19 during the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) conference in Washington, D.C. Finding the best.  Government agencies aren’t alone in trying to recruit multilingual speakers; U.S. corporations covet such skills for doing business in the era of globalization.

The article explained how Doughty and her colleagues used tests to train up cognitive processes related to language learning, such as the ability to hold information in the brain while using it for learning.  The tests sought to predict those who can succeed despite everything stacked against them.

The article reviewed changes in the brain.  Lee Osterhout is a cognitive neuroscientist at the University of Washington in Seattle.  His lab used electrodes placed on the scalp to measure the electrical activity created by the signals of brain cells. That allowed the researchers to see differences in the brain patterns among language learners and fluent speakers. They found some surprising results.

The article pointed out: Repeated studies of French language students showed that their brains responded differently to real French words compared with fake words after just two weeks of classes, even if the students themselves could not tell such words apart.   

“From knowing nothing to a little bit, [there are] huge changes in the brain,” Osterhout pointed out.”[From] knowing a little to knowing a lot, [it is] much more subtle.”  Another surprise came from studies of Spanish-speaking immigrants, because neither age nor language proficiency seemed to predict how quickly the immigrants picked up English. Instead, the fastest learners showed both the greatest motivation to learn and a willingness to use English at every opportunity despite being bad at it (at first).

MY COMMENT: This is the other reason why Super Thinking plus Spanish works. This three day course gets the delegates speaking and thinking Spanish all the time so they can use and/or think Spanish every day… and communicating even from the beginning. In this way the education grows even when Spanish is not being spoken.

Another: Gary and Merri,  It certainly was an interesting and intriguing four days for me.  I enjoyed the Spanish but even more so, all the tentacles that extended during those four days that went into so many different directions.

I grew up in a very SQUARE box with loving  and intelligent parents but my world remained within this box, unable to see beyond those walls, as I was never encouraged to “think outside the box”..  Mike has been opening doors and leading me outside this box but because of my upbringing I have not completely embraced or understood what was beyond those doors he opened for me.  As I have gotten older I have become more open to the world outside those doors yet those old tapes continue to play and I have not been able to completely release myself and experience all that can be.

Another shared this: Listening to the two of you during our time together has suddenly got me to thinking, and although some of the ideas still seem foreign to me,  I am at a point in my life now where I can say, “anything is possible” and I am now willing to embrace and allow myself to experience the world of possibility and let it take me in directions I may have in the past resisted.  I really don’t know where all this is going to lead me but I am now willing to explore, develop and grow.

I found all the information you offered on healing, realigning the body, nutrition, etc. so fascinating, have you ever thought about doing a course on just that?  With the aging population and the health care issues I think it would be not only an interesting course but one that would be very beneficial to so many.  I, personally, would love to learn more about what you talked about and plan on purchasing the book, “Body Renewal, the Lost Art of Self Healing” for my Kindle.

Another: Hola Merri Y Gary, I was thinking about you this Remembrance Day, and I went to check emails and there you are!  We had fun at Disney World on Monday and sat beside several Personnes Espaniol.  We could understand them however I couldn’t make sentences quickly, but could say one or two word phrases that were understood.  We arrived home at 3am yesterday – the airlines were very late in Denver due to a crew incident.

I found myself making up sentences all day yesterday as I was running errands.  John knows more vocabulary than I at this point as he has studied Spanish previously.  Today I will begin to review the lessons and construct sentences to send to you and the group – as you suggested below.  Es en BUENO sugestion!!!  I also received the email Merri sent with the 4005 words and started to scroll through those yesterday.

Another a dentist said: I was so delighted with my experience at the Spanish training.  I felt more confident of ability to pronounce Spanish than I ever was of French or German.  Funny… I did not think I remembered any French or German but when I cannot remember the Spanish words the German and French popped up.  Practicing my pronunciation made my trip home go faster. I never enjoyed pronouncing either of the other two, but this was fun. It is hard to fall asleep at the wheel when you are moving your mouth to speak Spanish. It does work your mouth in a different way.  I realized that you have to say each syllable slowly and correctly(until you get it perfectly) and when you do it is impressive.

It was amazing to see us all writing such advanced sentences after a few days and so much more enjoyable than having to go through the alphabet to build the words to build the sentences.

Another Wrote: Dear Gary,  I intended to give it a few days before I wrote to you about my experience in the Spanish + SuperThinking  Course. However, I had such dramatic results today, in the physical rather than the cognitive realm, that I had to share this immediately.

I started my day with Baroque music. Before I began my Spanish lesson, I went through the Mayan Waves Brain Refresher (Brain Sync). I also played an alpha wave composition while I completed a lesson in the morning. I repeated the process this afternoon. Before my high intensity interval training (HIIT) workout in the evening, I put on a gamma brain wave video from you tube faster reading gamma waves help with exercise. I preformed the “Halo Of Sweat” workout from an online fitness site. Around the world, people complete the workout and posts their scores, striving to meet or beat the personal trainer. Frankly, my reps have rarely come close to the reps of the woman featured in the video nor have I ever beat her. Until today.

Not only did I come close to her performance, I surpassed her quite significantly with several exercises. I performed my best in the last exercise, Abs Burn Out. Her scores were 38, 34 and 33 and mine were 60, 40 and 47!

I believe several factors allowed me to achieve this acceleration in athletic ability today:

1. My left and right hemispheres are now harmonizing.
2. The meditation and relaxed concentration techniques I learned are coming more easily to me and effective.
3. My focus and concentration are greatly enhanced.

I am a Pilates professional so to have my exercise regimen improve so swiftly is remarkable. Not only am I now able speak Spanish but I am experiencing optimal health as well. I am deeply grateful to you and Merri for your SuperLearning instruction.  Be well,

Growing numbers of “indies” (short for independent) writers are using Kindle to sell their publications.

There is a great story about a 26 year old who is cutting out BIG publishers by publishing direct to the  Kindle.

She is writing vampire stories and is one of the top selling “indie” writers on the Kindle store.

This means she does not have a publishing deal. This allows her to keep 70% of her book sales.  According to one article I read she is selling up to 100,000 electronic books a month.

That is impressive when you consider that  it only takes a few tens of thousands of book sales at launch to get on the New York Times bestselling list.

The heck with lists! How about just writing and publishing?  Her formula is to lower her sales price to between $.99 to $3.00.  This compares to the typically $9.99 to $12.99 for other books on Kindle.

The lower price increases volume…. plus this cuts out a publisher, distributor and book store who normally absorb up to 88% of the income created by a book.

There are no printing costs, no shelf space, no inventory, no postal delivery.  Most of the publishing expenses are eliminated.

The writer keeps 70%.

Amazon keeps 30%.

A typical writer earning 12% of the book sales makes about $1.20 per $9.99 book sale.  A Kindle writer makes $2.10 on a $3 sale.

Previously one of the best selling Kindle writers was J.A. Konrath, but it was assumed he was popular because he previously had a publishing deal and so already had notoriety. That’s not the case with this girl (her name is Angela Hocking), who published stories on her blog before turning to Kindle. In fact, out of the top 25 best-selling indie Kindle writers, only 6 were previously affiliated with a publishing house.

If the story of 26 year Angela Hocking is true… a 100,000 sales at $2 average brings in $200,000 a month and her earnings are $140,000 a month.

That is a great income.

Not every writer will do that well.  Most of us don’t need to!

This is a new exciting era for writers.  Not so good for publishers who do not adapt.

However like small bookstores, small publishers have extra  opportunity now.

Smart… publishers who use this technology gain the following benefits.

* Printing, shipping and disposal (of unsold books) costs eliminated.

* Shelf space unlimited and almost free with no capital costs.

* There is increased sales volume. Kindle owners buy more books than print readers and will spend weekly to get new chapters rather than entire books.

There are three keys to success in this type of writing and publishing.  We have repeatedly stressed them at our websites and in our business courses.  Focus…. focus…. focus.

Buyers of books fall into niches.

Those who succeed are those who focus on a niche and create trust with those readers.

Take Merri’s and my publishing business as an example. Our readers know that the site content is about leading edge ideas related to fighting inflation, global investing, having micro businesses and being free to live anywhere.

These websites create a community of like minded souls around this niche.

Once a writer has become branded and has a list of readers,  it is easy to expand by adding authors and related topics, and editing the books of other authors, knowing that they can help them sell their books.

Some amazing websites and businesses will be built and Kindle will be the search engine… the jumping off point is finding the original readers who will become the core of your list!

Merri and I have 44 years publishing experience, translated into 14 years of hands on online publishing that we are expanding and adding into Kindle.

However there is something more… tapping into the National psyche.   If you know what you are doing and if you understand how to find your niche… sometimes something wonderful happens. What is the National Psyche? Let me share just three book titles and you’ll understand.  “Harry Potter” – “The Da Vinci Code” -  “Murder Games”.

These are three books that all tapped into the National Psyche… big time.  Harry Potter… meant to be a children’s book helped turn J.K. Rowling into a billionaire. She has since given away a lot of her fortune — reportedly $160 million of it — to charity.  I do not think that socially minded Rowling, who once lived on welfare, cares about her standing on the billionaires list.  But it is great knowing that an author of imaginative, timeless, honest-to-goodness books who taps into the national psyche can become a billionaire.

Another superb example is Suzanne Collins who has written the three Hunger Games books… meant to be for teens.  However a quick look at the top six best paid Kindle books at Amazon.com shows that all three are in the top six.

The Hunger Games trilogy is a young-adult adventure science fiction series. The trilogy consists of The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay.  The first two books were each The New York Times best sellers, and the third book, Mockingjay, topped all US bestseller lists upon its release.   By the time the movie, The Hunger Games, was released the publisher reported 26 million Hunger Games trilogy books in print.

Yet these books are only numbers four five and six top sellers because of  another  writer, E.L. James who has written ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ which is now #1 just about everyone’s  Best-Selling Books list.

An article by Deirdre Donahue for USA TODAY says:  E.L. James’ erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey — the book everybody in America seems to be talking about — has reached the top spot on USA TODAY’s Best-Selling Books list, dominating even Suzanne Collins. The other two books in James’ trilogy are also in the top 10.

Available in paperback as well as e-books, the series has sold 2 million copies so far in April, according to publisher Vintage. Meanwhile, the British author — who was just named one of Time’s 100 most influential people — begins her U.S. book tour Sunday.

Imagine this.  Six months ago E.L. James was successful but today is considered by Times Magazine one of the 100 most influential people in the world!

The story begins with an excerpt from the December 16, 2010 Economist Article entitled “Rise of the image men” begins: (bolds are mine) that says:  As they prepared to face their second big strike in four years, America’s coal-mining bosses knew they had to do something about the newspapers. It was 1906—a time of rising resentment against robber-baron capitalism and the heyday of muckraking “yellow journalism”. During the previous strike the trade unions had fostered good relations with newspapermen and won themselves a sympathetic press. To help put their side of the story, the mining bosses turned to a former journalist, Ivy Lee.   Lee was to pioneer new methods—and, in the process, create a new industry.

Lee observed that the rise of national newspaper chains and syndicated journalism in America since the 1880s, combined with the extension of the franchise, had profoundly changed society. Now, for the first time, there was something that could accurately be called “public opinion”, a shared consciousness and conversation across the country—and it was to be feared. Lee noted how the emerging mass media were acting as the conduit for the anti-capitalist message of Progressivism, the liberalising reform movement that peaked in America in the early 20th century. He realized not only that it was essential for businesses to counter this message, but that the same conduit could be used to spread pro-business sentiment.

His idea, blindingly obvious now but a novelty then, was to send newsdesks a stream of statements putting the mining bosses’ case and rebutting allegations against them.

The seeds in this story, are rich with potential for your prosperity and are so simple. Lee observed that the rise of national newspaper chains and syndicated journalism in America since the 1880s, combined with the extension of the franchise, had profoundly changed society. Now, for the first time, there was something that could accurately be called “public opinion”, a shared consciousness and conversation across the country—and it was to be feared.  This is obvious now but was a novelty then.

The real seed is that a coincidence of many technologies changed the world (in the form of the newspaper)… at the turn of the 20th century. One technology was the ability to make newsprint… the paper of newspapers.  Paper was two thousand years old, but cheap newsprint, paper from wood pulp, did not come along until 1838 when Charles Fenerty of Halifax made the first newsprint while helping a local paper mill maintain an adequate supply of rags to make paper.  He succeeded in making paper from the wood pulp itself.

Plus technologies in transportation and communication then allowed… everyone, reporters to paperboys, to create public opinion through the power of the word.

This leads us to the second story that tells of another global transformation from broadcast to broad band… from large publishing to Self Publishing and how you can have so many good things you desire… freedom… material wealth…adventure… security… fulfillment… friendships…. status and fun as a Self Publisher.

Perhaps what Merri and I are most proud of this second story because it tells the tale of a student who used our publishing course “Self Fulfilled How to be a Self Publisher” to build a career.

Mark has always been willing to try new things.  Working in a trauma center as an EMT, teaching public school, creating student groups on college campuses, publishing academic works, practicing real estate agency, and administering a university department are all things he has done.  Several careers and jobs later, he still has lots of stories to tell.  Helping people reach their potential is an important theme throughout Mark’s life.

For some unknown reason Mark went straight to the geography, his best and favorite course in school.  There it was – the Iberian Peninsula, Spain and Portugal. Then Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean caught his eye.  These were all places where he wanted to visit so they could reveal their secrets among the people he would meet.  Finally, Mark put his education to use by using those vocabulary words he was supposedly learning in Spanish class through travel in the U.S. and abroad.  He really could have used the “Super Thinking+Spanish” course then.

What prompted Rick Brown to first take the Super thinking + Spanish course was a trip to Ecuador where he had some issues communicating.

Rick was born in the province of Quebec and moved to the Greater Toronto Area in 1983. He traveled all over Canada during his twenty one year Military service. He has also visited Germany, Scotland, England, France Italy and Moneco, the USA and Ecuador.

Having spent the last thirty five years in the IT field, Rick is currently working for a Municipal Government in Ontario Canada where he is a Network Administrator and helps manage the Enterprise Data Centre and the Enterprise Backup for his group.

An interest in exporting his retirement south led Rick to us. He attended several courses and tours with us in Ecuador and came back for more the following year. He then joined our course to broaden his Spanish skills and wound up enrolling in Teacher Training course and now teaches Spanish.

Rick has worked in English, French and now Spanish. He looks forward to helping you to reach out and grasp Spanish as well.

What prompted Rick to first take the Super thinking + Spanish course was his first trip to Ecuador where he had some issues communicating. He was quite impressed with the Super Thinking aspects of the lessons and wanted to learn more especially  on the aspects of Whole Brain Learning.

Rick’s Toronto venue for the course is very interesting as it is on the south field of Oshawa Airport. This one of the original British Commonwealth Air Training Plan base from the Second World War.

The actual building is one of four remaining structures from the original base and in it’s day was a originaly a mess hall.  It has been completely redone as a meeting and entertainment facility by the membership of the 420 Wing and is one of very few buildings of it’s type remaining in Canada today.

Rick picked the facility because he is a veteran and the funds from our course rentals assist the Wing in running it’s programs which utilize veterans skills and, reach out to assist older veterans and Cadet organizations.

Shawn and Suzanne Bandick

In 2001  Suzanne and Shawn Bandick set out on a quest for adventure and a change of culture. They packed up their two kids, and moved from British Columbia, Canada to Mexico. Their  children, now young adults and in search of their own adventure and careers have moved back to Canada but Shawn and Suzanne keep their home base in Puerto Aventuras on the Caribbean coast of Mexico just south of Cancun.

In Canada, they built and trained sales and marketing teams for companies.  They traveled extensively for business and with their children for pleasure. Then came the question, “why do we work so hard just so we can go travel? Why don’t we just go and live abroad?”  Two years later they liquidated down to what would fit in their Toyota 4 runner and headed south.

Once in Mexico, Shawn opened a real estate office which was another fun adventure making tons of new friends and helping them live their dreams.  Suzanne became a writer and a life coach.

Fluency in a language is considered to come when you know 1,200 words. To prove that it is possible to gain this and much more, let me share just one of the 17 tactics Merri taught me that gives you thousands of Spanish words in less than three minutes.

Here are the thousands of Spanish words lesson #1:

All words in Spanish and English that end in ION are almost identical,  just pronounced differently. For example action is accion, education educacion, manipulation, manipulacion, etc.

Now you already literally know hundreds of Spanish nouns. This is just one of seventeen Spanish lessons you gain. The next lesson teaches you how to pronounce each of these nouns. Then you learn in a third lesson almost as many verbs, almost as quickly.

Third, you learn how to avoid conjugating verbs by sticking with the infinitive (far easier than it sounds). This simple lesson leaves you sounding like a Spanish professor (believe me I know as I use this tactic every day when in Ecuador).

There are many other lessons. For example lesson five shows how to sound infinitely polite and yet get almost anything you want in Spanish. Lesson six gives you the valuable connectors and the seventh lesson triples your Spanish capacity with yesterday, now and tomorrow.

By the end of the three day course you will feel quite comfortable speaking Spanish without stress!

In simple conversations, such as buying groceries or ordering a meal, I can make myself understood. A Livescience.com article helps explain why this course works and how delegates are creating Spanish sentences by the first lunch break and can communicate well in Spanish after just three days.   This article by Jeremy Hsu, LiveScience Senior Writer, is entitled “CIA Seeks Anyone, Anyone Who Can Speak 2 Languages”

Four important points in the article are shown in excerpts below with my comments to show what has been wrong with traditional Spanish courses and why the Super Thinking tactic is perfect for this program.

The article says: WASHINGTON, D.C. — Many Americans don’t learn a second or a third language from birth, let alone a language that the CIA or U.S. Foreign Service might want. The situation has forced U.S. government agencies to learn how to cultivate the most talented second-language speakers from among college students with little to no other-language expertise.

“In U.S. education, we don’t develop early bilinguals,” said Catherine Doughty, a language expert at the University of Maryland.

Doughty spoke as part of a panel on Feb. 19 during the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) conference in Washington, D.C. Finding the best.  Government agencies aren’t alone in trying to recruit multilingual speakers; U.S. corporations covet such skills for doing business in the era of globalization.

The article explained how Doughty and her colleagues used tests to train up cognitive processes related to language learning, such as the ability to hold information in the brain while using it for learning.  The tests sought to predict those who can succeed despite everything stacked against them.

The article reviewed changes in the brain.  Lee Osterhout is a cognitive neuroscientist at the University of Washington in Seattle.  His lab used electrodes placed on the scalp to measure the electrical activity created by the signals of brain cells. That allowed the researchers to see differences in the brain patterns among language learners and fluent speakers. They found some surprising results.

The article pointed out: Repeated studies of French language students showed that their brains responded differently to real French words compared with fake words after just two weeks of classes, even if the students themselves could not tell such words apart.   

“From knowing nothing to a little bit, [there are] huge changes in the brain,” Osterhout pointed out.”[From] knowing a little to knowing a lot, [it is] much more subtle.”  Another surprise came from studies of Spanish-speaking immigrants, because neither age nor language proficiency seemed to predict how quickly the immigrants picked up English. Instead, the fastest learners showed both the greatest motivation to learn and a willingness to use English at every opportunity despite being bad at it (at first).

MY COMMENT: This is the other reason why Super Thinking plus Spanish works. This three day course gets the delegates speaking and thinking Spanish all the time so they can use and/or think Spanish every day… and communicating even from the beginning. In this way the education grows even when Spanish is not being spoken.

Another: Gary and Merri,  It certainly was an interesting and intriguing four days for me.  I enjoyed the Spanish but even more so, all the tentacles that extended during those four days that went into so many different directions.

I grew up in a very SQUARE box with loving  and intelligent parents but my world remained within this box, unable to see beyond those walls, as I was never encouraged to “think outside the box”..  Mike has been opening doors and leading me outside this box but because of my upbringing I have not completely embraced or understood what was beyond those doors he opened for me.  As I have gotten older I have become more open to the world outside those doors yet those old tapes continue to play and I have not been able to completely release myself and experience all that can be.

Another shared this: Listening to the two of you during our time together has suddenly got me to thinking, and although some of the ideas still seem foreign to me,  I am at a point in my life now where I can say, “anything is possible” and I am now willing to embrace and allow myself to experience the world of possibility and let it take me in directions I may have in the past resisted.  I really don’t know where all this is going to lead me but I am now willing to explore, develop and grow.

I found all the information you offered on healing, realigning the body, nutrition, etc. so fascinating, have you ever thought about doing a course on just that?  With the aging population and the health care issues I think it would be not only an interesting course but one that would be very beneficial to so many.  I, personally, would love to learn more about what you talked about and plan on purchasing the book, “Body Renewal, the Lost Art of Self Healing” for my Kindle.

Another: Hola Merri Y Gary, I was thinking about you this Remembrance Day, and I went to check emails and there you are!  We had fun at Disney World on Monday and sat beside several Personnes Espaniol.  We could understand them however I couldn’t make sentences quickly, but could say one or two word phrases that were understood.  We arrived home at 3am yesterday – the airlines were very late in Denver due to a crew incident.

I found myself making up sentences all day yesterday as I was running errands.  John knows more vocabulary than I at this point as he has studied Spanish previously.  Today I will begin to review the lessons and construct sentences to send to you and the group – as you suggested below.  Es en BUENO sugestion!!!  I also received the email Merri sent with the 4005 words and started to scroll through those yesterday.

Dealing with internet service providers and shopping for appliances, etc., normally would have required me hiring a translator to follow me around. Super Thinking plus Spanish courses are among the few I know that not only share valuable information but help the delegates become smarter so they absorb, retain and recall the education more effectively.  The course does this through the power of music… a power we all already have within. It is interesting that we do not see ourselves ‘creating’ communication in our native tongue; each saying it a little different than the other, and yet still all getting the ‘communication’ across the bridge in our own manner.

Another a dentist said: I was so delighted with my experience at the Spanish training.  I felt more confident of ability to pronounce Spanish than I ever was of French or German.  Funny… I did not think I remembered any French or German but when I cannot remember the Spanish words the German and French popped up.  Practicing my pronunciation made my trip home go faster. I never enjoyed pronouncing either of the other two, but this was fun. It is hard to fall asleep at the wheel when you are moving your mouth to speak Spanish. It does work your mouth in a different way.  I realized that you have to say each syllable slowly and correctly(until you get it perfectly) and when you do it is impressive.

It was amazing to see us all writing such advanced sentences after a few days and so much more enjoyable than having to go through the alphabet to build the words to build the sentences.

Another Wrote: Dear Gary,  I intended to give it a few days before I wrote to you about my experience in the Spanish + SuperThinking  Course. However, I had such dramatic results today, in the physical rather than the cognitive realm, that I had to share this immediately.

I started my day with Baroque music. Before I began my Spanish lesson, I went through the Mayan Waves Brain Refresher (Brain Sync). I also played an alpha wave composition while I completed a lesson in the morning. I repeated the process this afternoon. Before my high intensity interval training (HIIT) workout in the evening, I put on a gamma brain wave video from you tube faster reading gamma waves help with exercise. I preformed the “Halo Of Sweat” workout from an online fitness site. Around the world, people complete the workout and posts their scores, striving to meet or beat the personal trainer. Frankly, my reps have rarely come close to the reps of the woman featured in the video nor have I ever beat her. Until today.

Not only did I come close to her performance, I surpassed her quite significantly with several exercises. I performed my best in the last exercise, Abs Burn Out. Her scores were 38, 34 and 33 and mine were 60, 40 and 47!

I believe several factors allowed me to achieve this acceleration in athletic ability today:

1. My left and right hemispheres are now harmonizing.
2. The meditation and relaxed concentration techniques I learned are coming more easily to me and effective.
3. My focus and concentration are greatly enhanced.

I am a Pilates professional so to have my exercise regimen improve so swiftly is remarkable. Not only am I now able speak Spanish but I am experiencing optimal health as well. I am deeply grateful to you and Merri for your SuperLearning instruction.  Be well,

Having just spent nearly a month with two of my newest grandchildren… I can see why so many people have problems learning Spanish… or learning anything for that matter.

Here our grandson, Leo, is teaching me about how to learn via his … everything in mouth trial and error technique.

The ability to keep learning is more important than ever before. Rapid change means we have to keep learning to just keep up… much less retire from the rat race.

Hello Merri and Gary,  Just had to express my wonder and pleasure coming from the Super Learning and Super Spanish class in Mount Dora;  it was absolutely fantastic!!  You both have such a wealth of knowledge and expertise, I feel fortunate to have found you; I really mean that.  Someone said “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear”.  You appeared.

I have been amazed at how my head keeps pulling up the correlations we learned.  Every time I see words I’m trying to put them into Spanish.

I did have the opportunity today on a flight to experiment some with a Brazilian lady.  We each caught a few words.

I am saying all the English words, then repeating them in Spanish as we did in class.  I have a home in Mexico where I will be able to do a lot of practicing in May.  There is a gardener who has always tried to communicate with me; I will be practicing with him and the maid, then on to the “streets”!  My granddaughter also was tutored for a year in Mexico; we will be conversing also.  I’m very excited about this.

The July Writer’s Camp in July will be as good I know.

(now as you said – these two sentences may not be completely correct, but I know you will know what I’m saying…and that’s all we really want to do!)

This is the key to learning Spanish in three days.  The course gives delegates the ability to communicate in Spanish so they can create sentences every single day.

A study for the CIA on how to help people learn second languages showed that the key to learning was “the willingness  to speak a language even though one was bad at it in the beginning”.  In short  those who learn the fastest and the best were those who applied trail and error to learning a language.

Enter Leo and Matilda our grandkids. Dada.  Maa Ma.  Is this perfect English?  Not a bit but do you think it will communicate?   Mom and dad will go bananas when they hear this first attempt to communicate.

The willingness to speak a new language even though not perfectly is the key to learning.   Plus what is perfect?  As languages evolve,  isn’t it a bit silly to worry about perfection when “How R U” and “TQ” (Thank You) and “cool” “awesome” “I am 4 U” and other such short cuts are now accepted forms of communication?

The cool awesome thing about Super Thinking + Spanish is that it prepares you to communicate in just three days so you do not sound bad at all.  Your three day Spanish is very eloquent and allows you to apply trial and error after the course in three different ways… speaking words you read and hear in your lessons…   creating Spanish sentences that get your point across mentally in a technique we call “detouring” and by creating sentences daily. When you memorize a sentence you quickly forget. When you create a sentence, it is yours forever!

There is a fourth dimension to learning that every person can apply differently depending on how they learn so we want to share the test below.  It can help you understand better how you specifically learn but first may I remind you that at the root of all scientific discovery is trial and error.

Trial and error IS the root of all scientific application… so much so that many higher education facilities now teach improved problem-solving skills in special events such as the Science Olympiad  as explained (linked below) at the New Mexico Tech a scinece and engineering research university.

Application of problem solving skills as a long term endeavor.
Education is the importance of trial and error.
Emphasis on experiences rather than memorization.

We can apply trial and error in different ways and learn in different ways. Understanding how we learn best can help us be more effective!  Here is the test at the selfgrowth.com site.

Today’s section (Part 3) focuses on the different ways in which we learn.  By figuring out your most appropriate LEARNING STYLE(s), you will be able to determine which type of self-help you’re best suited for.

 The three major learning styles defined by psychologists include:

Visual Learning
Auditory Learning
Kinesthetic Learning

 You’ll certainly be able to learn more effectively by understanding which learning style works for you.  But don’t believe that you’re limited to just one!  In fact, mostly all of us use a combination of styles.  It is important, however, for you to be part of an environment that makes the most of your learning ability.  

VISUAL LEARNERS (approximately 65 percent of the population) This type of learner is best at collecting information with their eyes. This includes looking at visual images or reading text.  Visual learners usually prefer graphics, illustrations and charts.  They are able to remember details and ideas in picture form, typically what they’ve seen before. 

AUDITORY LEARNERS (approximately 30 percent of the population) This type of learner is best at collecting information with their ears. This includes listening and talking.  Although easily distracted, auditory learners learn by memorizing sound.  For instance, they learn instructions by repeating them over and over again, even in silent form. They often like background music to block out interrupting noises.

KINESTHETIC LEARNERS (approximately 5 percent of the population) This type of learner is best at collecting meaning through touch and movement.  Kinesthetic learners learn through physical interaction; most are young children.  In essence, touching is a way of seeing.

So, which of these three styles is most effective for you?  If you’re not sure, here is an exercise to help.  Read through the following examples and note down how many apply to you personally.  By counting how many check marks you have in each category, you can determine the type of learning that is right for you.

A VISUAL LEARNER.

—Reads or watches TV to relax.

—Tends to remember people’s faces but not their names.

—Gets distracted by untidiness when concentrating.

—Learns about a new idea by reading the book.

—Attempts to spell a difficult word by writing to see how it looks.

—Solves problems most easily by writing out possible solutions.

AN AUDITORY LEARNER.

—Listens to music or the radio to relax.

—Tends to remember people’s names but not their faces.

—Gets distracted by noise when concentrating.

—Learns about a new idea by purchasing the audio tapes.

—Attempts to spell a difficult word by sounding it out.

—Solves problems most easily by talking through possible solutions.

A KINESTHETIC LEARNER.

—Does a physical activity or plays a sport to relax.

—Tends to remember people by recalling things he/she did with them.

—Gets distracted by moving people when concentrating.

—Learns about a new idea by going to the seminar.

—Attempts to spell a difficult word by writing to see how it feels.

—Solves problems most easily through hands-on experience.

If you have a high score for visual learners, then I recommend you utilize visual presentations like illustrations, slides and videos. If you see that you are more of an audio learner, then audio sources like tapes or lectures will suit you best. If you happen to fit under the kinesthetic category, then a kinesthetic or hands-on approach to learning will help.

Certainly it is possible to score evenly across all three.  This shows that you are able to learn well using either the visual, audio or kinesthetic learning styles.  Congratulations!

The knowledge you gain about yourself from this test can help you improve your ability to learn through trial and error.

In these times of rapid change… this ability to keep abreast and get ahead of change can be the most effective step in moving forward in any career or situation that you desire.

My wife, Merri, and I have possibly the smallest… yet one of the highest earning… self publishing company in the world.

Writers who earn the most are writers, like Merri and myself, who also publish.   We always make an annual six figure income but some years we net seven figures…over a million dollars. That’s because we figured out that the lion’s share of income earned from writing goes to the publisher. The publishing part of writing can be outrageously profitable.

One case study we’ll look at in the course reviews the book. “Who Moved My Cheese.” It’s so small! I love it!  The publisher had to push just to make it look like a book, yet 17 million copies in the first two years of release. No one is laughing. If the normal price is $19.95 a book, that’s $339,155 million in sales. If the author received a normal 12% royalty (on the wholesale price) he made a cool $20,346,500 (and much more as the book has continued to sell for years).

Pretty good, huh?

The $20 million plus will pay for quite a few groceries. Almost anyone would love to have this much income until they realize that this leaves the publisher with the other $300 million to spread around.

The neat thing about being a small, self publisher is that virtually all this money (the other 88%) is yours! (Sometimes the 12% too.) In other words, it could be all yours.

Merri and I began publishing with no money and little background. We started small! As already mentioned, I was bust and had no background in writing. I did not finish college.

Before we share the exact schedule of this exciting camp, let me outline a few of the benefits that self publishing has brought to Merri and me.

If you accept our invitation, we will hammer, even bombard you with the absolute, vital importance of starting small. You can have fun every day doing what you love as you accomplish goals that are important… to you… and are a service to your community.

Merri and I, for example, love helping people get jobs.  So we used self publishing to create a foundation (Land of the Sun Foundation) to help the indigenous learn how to get work. The foundation has donated nearly a million dollars in Ecuador to create jobs.

What do you love? Why not make the kinds of money I’ve just mentioned publishing your passion and do something good for the world at the same time?

Three other things you gain.

#1: Respect. If you are not a recluse like Merri and me, you’ll find yourself the center of attention at social events and with your friends and in business because publishing is highly respected.

#2: Power. Everyone wants publishers to distribute good information about them. And everyone fears publishers a bit. The pen IS mightier than the sword!

#3: Protection. Writers are protected by the 1st Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. You do not need a license to publish. There is no government watchdog nor do you have bureaucratic red tape involved in publishing. Publishers enjoy almost more freedom than any other occupation because of the Freedom of the Press. This is so powerful because the first amendment is actually a part of the Bill of Rights. Just in case you missed this in school (as most students did including me) here are the exact words of this amendment:

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

You become the press and you are set free. You cannot get more protection than that.

Shall we get back to the money and lifestyle? What can self publishing do financially for you?

Merri and I love nature so our home in Florida is set amidst and orange grove… just far enough from busy parts of the state that we enjoy wonderful peace and quiet. This makes a perfect place to study.  This is a winter shot from the front yard of our Florida home looking over our orange grove and lake…  that we bought with cash from our self published writing.

This is only where we live in the winter.

The Blue Ridge is our summer home.  That name is a slight misnomer for a large part of the year.  Correctly named in the winter, these mountains would be called “White Ridge”. The white comes from snow which begins with S as does South which is where we head around November…to Florida or Ecuador .

While it’s freezing in the North Carolina mountains, we worry about sunburn sometimes.

The Ecuador hotel, by the way, is one of the most satisfying parts of our self publishing business. We bought it from bankruptcy because a dozen wonderful people (with babies and kids and worries about education, medical bills and yes groceries) were about to lose their jobs.

Mostly right now… due to a elderly mom and many wonderful new grand kids we spend winters at our in Florida and visit family in Oregon and England.  So for your convenience (and ours) the next two writers camp will be conducted near our Ashe County North Carolina farm.

Merri’s publishing skills and history, by the way, far exceed mine. She began her own import business selling products form Italy , Germany and Mexico through her own advertisements she wrote in the New Yorker, Sunday NY Times, Smithsonian, House & Garden, House Beautiful, and other magazines. Then with her ad agency edited and published hundreds of books, brought a bankrupt magazine to award winning status as executive editor to Gulf Shore Life (which later sold to the Robb Reports for $22+ million dollars), has edited over 1400 writers and was even offered the top editor (the only female) at the National Enquirer working directly with Generoso Pope (which she politely turned down).  She lectured at Magazine Conferences throughout the South to help others bring their own publishing ventures to awarding winning and financial success.

We’ll then return to and chip away at your fractured writing and publishing ideas to refine the most valuable asset you have in your business armory… your imagination.

Finally around 5 pm, we’ll stop working as one large group. However, that is not the end of the educational, evolutionary process that will by now be whirling away. You’ll have enough momentum and information to refine your publication.  That’s what you’ll be assigned to do.

We won’t want you to work too late though.  We still have a lot to do on Sunday and Monday.

Saturday, I already know what will happen. You’ll all be sitting around with others buzzing over your ideas. I’ll have to force you back to group work at 9 a.m. because you’ll have such a head of steam you won’t want to stop talking. However, I hope that you have followed Merri’s and my example and had a good night’s sleep. Experience suggests that some of you in your excitement, will have worked through the night. You might not get to sleep now because today we’re going to accomplish three days work in a day!

We’ll start with a review of your assignments. No red marks or stars by the way… just feedback and a gentle coaxing toward the ways to create winning writing and self publishing ventures.

Then we’ll get into how to turn your thoughts/desires/energies into reality with:

#1: Stories with authenticity, meaning and roots.

#2: Stories true to the heart.

#3: Stories with conflict.

#4: Stories with passion.

The “why” of these four qualities is fascinating and so impossibly important, yet simple, that knowing it is worth the entire investment you make in the workshop. Here it is quick, down and dirty… knowledge worth millions.

There are three main demographic subgroups in the Western World. One is dying out. One controls everything but the third is rapidly rising… growing so fast that it can take down even a big organization like Starbucks (which it did in England) if ignored. Yet this third group (whom you will write and publish for) is at least partially ignored by every large corporation in the world. They all make the same cheesy error and this huge mistake creates fracturing opportunities for you… which will be the tiny, but immensely profitable small publisher.

We go on to our next Story Review about small niches that Merri and I have fractured. How we beat a publisher that’s 1,500 times larger in this niche.

We’ll break for lunch. Then at 2 pm it’s back to work:

In the afternoon, Merri and I look at how to match your passion to the National Psyche by studying the NY Times & USA Today best seller lists. We’ll see how new indie epublishers are creating top selling books and provide magical clues that lead to successful products, stories and marketing.

We’ll work on epublishing…how it is virtually free of expense to start/continue/succeed.  Only things necessary:  inspiration, desire, hard work and follow through…actual cost?  Zero.

Then we’ll review how to use Twitter to develop viral marketing and… what’s next!

Getting your reports, books or simply ideas on the epublishing parade…that’s through Kindle, Book Nook, etc.

The excitement that builds by this time of the camp often interferes with the dream process.  Ideas for reports, publishing ideas, businesses, stories, new lifestyles and bigger profits come rushing forth even though you are trying for sheep.

Regardless, on Sunday, – as before, we’ll start at 9 a.m. sharp and remain intensely focused until mid afternoon.

Before Merri and I wrap up the entire process, we’ll outline our how we’ll continue to assist you for the rest of the year.

Unlike my first novel, Black Diamonds, the first book in the Colors of Alaska trilogy which takes place in Homer, Alaska, Appalachian Gold is set in the North Georgia Mountains.  As is my style, I interweave local legends with love and bring them to contemporary life.

Susan and I both hope to attend more of your workshops at your North Carolina camps, perhaps we can manage to get up to one this summer.  Maybe we can even work in a book signing at a nearby winery to help spread the word about Appalachian Gold.

How Super Thinking + Spanish Began

How Super Thinking + Spanish Began

A Rainy Night in Georgia…late 1960s. I had returned to my family home in the Deep South after 2 1/2 years of language study at the Goethe Institute in Europe.

The accomplishment of German in the Institutes in Europe was extremely painful and stressful. Although I did obtain bountiful mastery as well as even dreamed in German after over 2 years there, I felt exhausted and depleted. I should have been excited, thrilled and happy.

It was one of those rainy winters in Georgia. After 2 previous years suffering bad weather in Europe, I longed for the sun and the then unknown to me, Caribbean.

It occurred to me that I should winter in Yucatan. The urge to explore another country and the desire to pursue a career in Import & Export plus the continued dreary weather convinced me to go and try it. I was young AND foolish.

So, I packed a suitcase & headed out. As a language major, I was fluent in French, German with years of Latin and Origins of Modern Language courses behind me.

For some reason I overlooked the fact that I was not fluent in Spanish!

Loving the weather but not enjoying (or being able to afford) an idle life, I discovered a world of opportunity. The markets of Yucatan unfolded to me, discovering the wonders of textiles beautifully made in styles and fabrics unknown to the U.S. at that time. I was hooked!

However, not speaking Spanish made me feel deprived, lazy, lonely and not in a strong position to do business. It was imperative to speak Spanish! Fast!!!
What happened was quite miraculous. We’ll share these rules/ideas/words that allowed me to communicate…not in an erroneous, clumsy way but in the way of a scholar-an honorable, gracious person respecting others & language.

Fluency in a language as the Goethe Institut (the respected language school) defines it as 1200 words.

Because I had studied for those years under this powerful learning system, I knew of its accuracy. As I struggled to teach myself Spanish, my first thoughts were “How quickly can I know 1200 words?” Well, a lot quicker than you can imagine! Modern languages (French, Spanish, Italian, English) are based on Latin, with the same roots. If I knew a word in French or English, perhaps there would be a similar word in Spanish. This led to a number of “rules” on how to automatically convert English words to Spanish.

My great hope was there might be a couple of hundred words that are more or less the same in both languages…but lo and behold, you’ll see that there are actually 4005 words!

(These I painstakingly selected. I went joyfully through every word in the largest Spanish dictionary and decided whether its English counterpart was familiar & suitable & if so, added it to my list.) I joyfully made this incredibly long list to help all others gain fluency!

Let’s remember that 1200 words are fluency in a language!

How does it feel to realize that right now, we already know 4005 words in Spanish?

Back then, I thought…I need to know how to pronounce these words and I need to know how to recognize more and more and that’s about it…but whoa!
How about speaking in whole sentences? How about conjugation of verbs? How about the dreaded derivation of sentences? How about sounding gracious and honorable?

I must learn instantly. I must speak now. I must communicate. I sought to communicate…while honoring the language. Could this possibly be?

Well, of course it could. And it did.

Years later, I was fortunate enough to be chosen for Dr. Georgi Lozanov’s (the Bulgarian Master) SuperLearning Course and became a certified teacher in this stress free, remarkable system. But that’s another story, which we will discuss later. For now, just remember I was on a very short string and desperately wanted and needed to speak Spanish…so what follows is exactly what happened.

It is my most humble pleasure to offer the following easy system so that you, too, may seek your own adventures and enjoy one of the great pleasures in life- communication!

The class and the teachings were extraordinary. We had the head of the Buddhist Monks, the Cultural Minister of Russia, the head of the radionics masters from Zurich, and a number of equally fascinating people. And then there was me!

After being chosen to take part and to be licensed in these techniques in 1976, my life was changed forever. Spending weeks with 11 others from all over the world was a remarkable experience. Having the benefit of the understanding and experience of Dr. Georgi Lozanov, the energy and drive of Dr. Carl Schleicher and the devotion to language of who was to come my best friend, Parisian Simone Bedard (whose father was the Ambassador from France) gave me the root, the basis, the knowledge and the joy of these powerful techniques.

Over 32 years ago, I was transformed forever and have never looked back.

In a sense, super learning adds by taking away by deleting negative suggestions, limiting ideas, fear images, and self-blame. It is not so much that super learning gives us something new…it gives us something we already have…ourselves!

This joy of learning and a feeling of harmony riding along on the full wave of one’s being are some of the benefits. Super learning is the ability to learn and remember increased five to 50 times.

The Roots of Super Memory

Lozanov uncovered some fascinating lore about the origins of super memory. He felt that the “how to” of this extraordinary super memory had been handed down from leader to leader in ancient times. “Yogis needed hypermnesia. They did nothing but memorize all the sacred writings so that whatever happened, if all books and recorded knowledge disappeared, as long as even one yogi lived, he would be able to restore all the lost knowledge from memory.”

Dr. Lozanov went to live with the Maoris in New Zealand as well as with the Yogis in India. He found that all were trained in the same super memory methods. The Maori Chief, Kaumatana, could recite the entire history of his tribe covering 45 generations and over one thousand years in 3 days without any notes.

Lozanov had practiced Raja Yoga for 20 years, but he realized that Bulgarians could not utilize all the exercises of those Yogi masters. What he developed was his own techniques for learning from the ancient ones.

But what he wanted is that everyday people could have the qualities of photographic super memory, instant calculations, extraordinary mental activities, pain control along with a whole range of paranormal abilities.

But as a scientist and a doctor, He knew that he must have a scientific basis in order to succeed in helping his people, the Bulgarians.

A Wall Street Journal article entitled “Ways to Inflate Your IQ” says:  Many people think of IQ as a genetic trait, like brown eyes or short legs: You’re born with it and you’re stuck with it. Now, a growing body of research is showing that a person’s IQ can rise—and even fall—over the years.

Scores can change gradually or quickly, after as little as a few weeks of cognitive training, research shows. The increases are usually so incremental that they’re not immediately perceptible to individuals, and the intelligence-boosting effects of cognitive training can fade after a few months.

In the latest study, 33 British students were given IQ tests and brain scans at ages 12 to 16 and again about four years later by researchers at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging at University College London; 9% of the students showed a significant change of 15 points or more in IQ scores.

On a scale where 90 to 110 is considered average, one student’s IQ rose 21 points to 128 from 107, lifting the student from the 68th percentile to the 97th compared with others the same age, says Cathy Price, professor of cognitive neuroscience at the center and co-author of the study, published last month in Nature.

Swings in individual IQ scores are often written off as the product of measurement error or a test subject having a bad day. But MRIs in this study showed changes in gray matter in areas corresponding to fluctuations in the kids’ skills, Dr. Price says. Although the sample size is small, the study drew wide attention because it is among the first to show how changes in IQ scores may be reflected in actual shifts in brain structure.

There are practical steps people can take to see longer-term IQ changes. A 30-year study at the National Institute of Mental Health found that people whose work involves complex relationships, setting up elaborate systems or dealing with people or difficult problems, tend to perform better over time on cognitive tests. Test scores of people whose jobs are simple and require little thought actually tend to decline, according to the research, published in 1999 in Psychology and Aging.

New tasks stimulate the brain most. When researchers at the University of Hamburg subjected 20 young adults to one month of intense training in juggling, they found an increase in the corresponding gray matter in the brain as early as seven days after the training began. The added gray matter receded when the training was stopped, although the participants were still able to juggle, says the study, published in 2008 in PLoS One.

IQ tests don’t measure such abilities as creativity, common sense or social sensitivity. They do assess many kinds of knowledge and abilities, including abstract reasoning skills. Rising scores in abstract reasoning are the main reason average IQ scores have been increasing by about three points every decade since the 1930s, based on studies by James Flynn, a professor emeritus of political studies at the University of Otago in New Zealand. That may be partly because children spend nearly twice as many years in school, on average, than children decades ago, says Wendy M. Williams, a professor in the department of human development at Cornell University.

Fluctuations in IQ scores over time underscore the brain-boosting benefits of a complex job, musical training, advanced schooling and new experiences throughout a lifetime.

Music lessons are linked to higher IQ throughout life, according to research by E. Glenn Schellenberg, a psychology professor at the University of Toronto at Mississauga. Six years’ lessons lifted children’s IQ scores an average 7.5 points; those gains eroded to two points by college age, says a study published in 2006 in the Journal of Educational Psychology.

Share our 44 years of Experience

When it comes to having a micro business in online publishing, seminars, courses and tours, there are few people with more experience than Merri and me.  Over 44 years we have organized, marketed and conducted thousands of tours for tens of thousands in dozens and dozens of countries (even behind the Iron Curtain).  This course shares how we have done this… what we did right… what we did wrong… and what you can do better.

Teachers of our Spanish program do not have to speak Spanish during the course by the way.  In fact even Merri and I prohibit ourselves from speaking Spanish when we teach.  This is because the course uses and FM teacher and a pronunciation coach who must be a native born Spanish speaker.

Picking up pronunciation from an English born speaker is like recording a tape from a previous recording. Quality is lost!  The FM teacher… including Merri and me work in English and work with a pronunciation coach who does all the Spanish speaking.

Others are teaching their own programs using the tactics they learned to help their own business. For example it is quite easy to reverse the process we use and teach Spanish speakers to communicate in English in just four days.

We do not have to wait for pain as we age.  I’ll explain why in a moment.

First, let me point out that the sentence “We Wait for Pain” shows why learning Spanish may be easier than you think.

This sentence “We wait for pain” shows one reason Spanish is so easy to learn.  In Spanish there are hardly ever confusing words that sound one way but are spelled another.  Even better there are no words that sound the same but are spelled in a totally different way and have a completely different meanings.   “We wait for pain” could be “Wee Weight Four Pane”.

Spanish is a phonetic language.  There ya go.  Another example.  Even the word phonetic makes no sense phonetically.  This word should be spelled “Fonetic”.  In fact in Spanish it is… “Fonético”.

The excerpt below from the New York Times article “Exercising an Aging Brain” by By Denise Grady shows that teaching is an exceptional career “beyond the money” because it slows mental aging!

Here is an excerpt from the article (bolds are mine):  MORE and more retired people are heading back to the nearest classroom — as students and, in some cases, teachers — and they are finding out that school can be lovelier the second time around. Some may be thinking of second careers, but most just want to keep their minds stimulated, learn something new or catch up with a subject they were always curious about but never had time for.

For many, at least part of the motivation is based on widespread reports that exercising the brain may preserve it, forestalling mental decline and maybe even Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia.

“When you and I are having this conversation, you’re taking notes, thinking, remembering pieces of it, trying to relate it to other things,” said Arthur Toga, a professor of neurology and director of the laboratory of neuroimaging at the University of California, Los Angeles. “You’re changing the circuitry in your brain. That is because you have changed something in your brain to retain that memory.”

Dr. Toga elaborated: “The conversation requires nerve cells in the brain to fire, and when they fire they are using energy. More oxygen and sugar must be delivered, by increased blood flow to those regions.

“Why would that be good? If you are vasodilating, delivering more blood to certain regions of the brain, that is important. It increases the longevity and the health of those circuits. In adults, if I ask you to perform tasks you’ve never done before, the amount of brain it takes for you to try and do it is far greater than the amount of brain it takes for you to do something you’re already good at. So yes, exercising the brain is good.” Playing video games probably qualifies as a type of brain exercise, he said, though older people might not sharpen their skills as fast as younger ones do.

But research continues. Dr. William Jagust, a professor of public health and neuroscience at the University of California, Berkeley, said there were two main theories that tried to explain why exercising the brain might make it more resistant to disease.

One is the “cognitive reserve” theory, which says that if the brain is in the best possible shape with extensive neuronal connections from being used a lot, it may be able to withstand the onset of Alzheimer’s disease for a while and symptoms may take longer to develop.

A hallmark of Alzheimer’s is deposits in the brain of an abnormal form of a protein called amyloid.

“A paper we published showed that people who were more cognitively active over their whole life span had less amyloid,” Dr. Jagust said.

“A variety of things is important,” Dr. Toga said. “We try to encourage people to do certain things because it couldn’t hurt and may be good. Retaining lots of social interaction is really important. It involves so much of the brain. You have to interpret facial expressions and understand new concepts. If you want to learn to ride a monocycle or do acrobatics at 75, it’s probably not a good idea. But exercising more geography in the brain, I think that’s important.”

 Few activities are as socially interactive as teaching!  This does not mean we should wait until we are old to teach. 

The same article also said:   “My interpretation is that people who are more cognitively active have more efficient brains,” Dr. Jagust said. “What seems to happen in aging is that older people seem to have less efficient brains.” A scan of brain activity on a 20-year-old being asked to remember something will show less activity needed than in an 80-year-old asked to perform the same task.

“Older people seem to activate or bring on line brain areas that young people don’t use,” Dr. Jagust said. “They have to work their brains harder. So people who stay cognitively active may use their brains more efficiently.”

That way, they may generate fewer amyloid deposits. But he emphasized that being mentally active throughout life — not just in old age — was what mattered.
“It has to do with lifelong patterns of behavior,” Dr. Jagust said. “We tend to focus on what people do at 75 in terms of dementia. But there is more evidence that what you do in your life, at 40 or 50, is probably more important.”

This era of rapid change makes it harder to earn a good living and enjoy life.  Standardization… globalization and growing population puts stress on so many. We call it the rat race… a never ending struggle where the treadmill continually accelerates.

This stress and the unraveling of the social pact… mean that money… savings… investments… pensions and  Social Security are becoming less and less dependable.   The only real assets are a keen mind, dependable body and an ability to serve.

This is why teaching is such a great way to serve.  In this information era… few things are as valuable as knowledge.  Plus the process provides freedom and helps us remain mentally active.

Whether you learn to teach Super Thinking or not… learn to teach something.   This is a good way to return some of the blessings we have all received and  we gain more than money.   We may gain mental clarity and much more.  One Super Thinking + Spanish teacher who just completed his first course (which allowed him to spend the winter in South America and earn while there) summed up the greatest benefit perfectly when he wrote.

A Livescience.com article entitled “CIA Seeks Anyone, Anyone Who Can Speak 2 Languages” shows that the key to learning was “the willingness  to speak a language even though one was bad at it in the beginning”.  In short  those who learn the fastest and the best were those who applied trial and error to learning a language.

When it comes to having a micro business in online publishing, seminars, courses and tours, there are few people with more experience than Merri and me.  Over 44 years we have organized, marketed and conducted thousands of tours for tens of thousands in dozens and dozens of countries (even behind the Iron Curtain).  This course shares how we have done this… what we did right… what we did wrong… and what you can do better.

We have worked with our first group of teachers since last November and are pleased enough with the results that we are inviting 12 more teachers to begin now to prepare for 2012 2013.

Our goal is for these teachers to work in their own ways and methods.  Some teachers who were already life coaches have enrolled just to apply the techniques to their existing profession.  Others have applied what they learned to charity teaching.

Some of the new teachers have chosen to teach our Super Thinking Spanish course and we have to developed a Co Op site to help them build their business.

These teachers have now taught courses in Ecuador, the Amazon, Uruguay, Mexico,  Costa Rica, Seattle, St. Luis, Sarasota, Vancouver and Toronto.

We have been pleased with results.  The first four teachers had 9 to 15 students but one in Vancouver had 25 with $6,737 in sales and one in
Toronto is at 16 with $5,041.  Not all the teachers have had this success… some are getting six and seven delegates in each course.  One failed to get any signups and though we have received great comments about all the teachers ability to teach, the teachers with the highest income have been those who can get out and market the course.

We have learned a lot about teaching teachers in the first year and are even better at teaching teachers now.

Teachers of our Spanish program do not have to speak Spanish during the course by the way.  In fact even Merri and I prohibit ourselves from speaking Spanish when we teach.  This is because the course uses a Super thinking teacher and a pronunciation coach who must be a native born Spanish speaker.

Picking up pronunciation from an English born speaker is like recording a tape from a previous recording. Quality is lost!  The teacher… including Merri and me work in English and work with a pronunciation coach who does all the Spanish speaking.

Others are teaching their own programs using the tactics they learned to help their own business. For example it is quite easy to reverse the process we use and teach Spanish speakers to communicate in English in just three days.

Since this is a Beta program it will continue to evolve. We cannot guarantee who we will work with and who won’t.   Becoming a trainee does NOT guarantee that you will become a teacher in our program.  Indications after the first year is that eight of the 12 trainees in 2011 will be involved in teaching our Super Thinking course but this is no assurance for 2013.

Fluency in a language is considered to come when you know 1,200 words. To prove that it is possible to gain this and much more, let me share just one of the 17 tactics Merri taught me that gives you thousands of Spanish words in less than three minutes.

Here are the thousands of Spanish words lesson #1:

All words in Spanish and English that end in ION are almost identical,  just pronounced differently. For example action is accion, education educacion, manipulation, manipulacion, etc.

Now you already literally know hundreds of Spanish nouns. This is just one of seventeen Spanish lessons you gain. The next lesson teaches you how to pronounce each of these nouns. Then you learn in a third lesson almost as many verbs, almost as quickly.

Third, you learn how to avoid conjugating verbs by sticking with the infinitive (far easier than it sounds). This simple lesson leaves you sounding like a Spanish professor (believe me I know as I use this tactic every day when in Ecuador).

There are many other lessons. For example lesson five shows how to sound infinitely polite and yet get almost anything you want in Spanish. Lesson six gives you the valuable connectors and the seventh lesson triples your Spanish capacity with yesterday, now and tomorrow.

By the end of the three day course you will feel quite comfortable speaking Spanish without stress!

In simple conversations, such as buying groceries or ordering a meal, I can make myself understood. A Livescience.com article helps explain why this course works and how delegates are creating Spanish sentences by the first lunch break and can communicate well in Spanish after just three days.   This article by Jeremy Hsu, LiveScience Senior Writer, is entitled “CIA Seeks Anyone, Anyone Who Can Speak 2 Languages”

Four important points in the article are shown in excerpts below with my comments to show what has been wrong with traditional Spanish courses and why the Super Thinking tactic is perfect for this program.

The article says: WASHINGTON, D.C. — Many Americans don’t learn a second or a third language from birth, let alone a language that the CIA or U.S. Foreign Service might want. The situation has forced U.S. government agencies to learn how to cultivate the most talented second-language speakers from among college students with little to no other-language expertise.

“In U.S. education, we don’t develop early bilinguals,” said Catherine Doughty, a language expert at the University of Maryland.

Doughty spoke as part of a panel on Feb. 19 during the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) conference in Washington, D.C. Finding the best.  Government agencies aren’t alone in trying to recruit multilingual speakers; U.S. corporations covet such skills for doing business in the era of globalization.

The article explained how Doughty and her colleagues used tests to train up cognitive processes related to language learning, such as the ability to hold information in the brain while using it for learning.  The tests sought to predict those who can succeed despite everything stacked against them.

The article reviewed changes in the brain.  Lee Osterhout is a cognitive neuroscientist at the University of Washington in Seattle.  His lab used electrodes placed on the scalp to measure the electrical activity created by the signals of brain cells. That allowed the researchers to see differences in the brain patterns among language learners and fluent speakers. They found some surprising results.

The article pointed out: Repeated studies of French language students showed that their brains responded differently to real French words compared with fake words after just two weeks of classes, even if the students themselves could not tell such words apart.   

“From knowing nothing to a little bit, [there are] huge changes in the brain,” Osterhout pointed out.”[From] knowing a little to knowing a lot, [it is] much more subtle.”  Another surprise came from studies of Spanish-speaking immigrants, because neither age nor language proficiency seemed to predict how quickly the immigrants picked up English. Instead, the fastest learners showed both the greatest motivation to learn and a willingness to use English at every opportunity despite being bad at it (at first).

MY COMMENT: This is the other reason why Super Thinking plus Spanish works. This three day course gets the delegates speaking and thinking Spanish all the time so they can use and/or think Spanish every day… and communicating even from the beginning. In this way the education grows even when Spanish is not being spoken.

I thought I would take your course and then complete my remaining 42 units over the next 2 weeks. However, I took one class exam on Saturday night, August 27th. I didn’t even take the cellophane off the required Course manuals until after I saw the two of you today less than 5 hours ago! I used your techniques and completed 39 units of continuing education today. I have now completed all 45 units. All of my test scores were in the 90.6-96% range. Since I returned home, I have purchased some of the CDs of Baroque music and thought about which specific pieces will work best in different parts of my classes.  I am also reading Perfect Health by Deepak Chopra.  I found your discussion of this book to be very helpful in showing how to balance one’s life.  I have adjusted my daily schedule, and I can already notice a difference in my productivity.

Another: Gary and Merri,  It certainly was an interesting and intriguing four days for me.  I enjoyed the Spanish but even more so, all the tentacles that extended during those four days that went into so many different directions.

I grew up in a very SQUARE box with loving  and intelligent parents but my world remained within this box, unable to see beyond those walls, as I was never encouraged to “think outside the box”..  Mike has been opening doors and leading me outside this box but because of my upbringing I have not completely embraced or understood what was beyond those doors he opened for me.  As I have gotten older I have become more open to the world outside those doors yet those old tapes continue to play and I have not been able to completely release myself and experience all that can be.

Another shared this: Listening to the two of you during our time together has suddenly got me to thinking, and although some of the ideas still seem foreign to me,  I am at a point in my life now where I can say, “anything is possible” and I am now willing to embrace and allow myself to experience the world of possibility and let it take me in directions I may have in the past resisted.  I really don’t know where all this is going to lead me but I am now willing to explore, develop and grow.

I found all the information you offered on healing, realigning the body, nutrition, etc. so fascinating, have you ever thought about doing a course on just that?  With the aging population and the health care issues I think it would be not only an interesting course but one that would be very beneficial to so many.  I, personally, would love to learn more about what you talked about and plan on purchasing the book, “Body Renewal, the Lost Art of Self Healing” for my Kindle.

Another: Hola Merri Y Gary, I was thinking about you this Remembrance Day, and I went to check emails and there you are!  We had fun at Disney World on Monday and sat beside several Personnes Espaniol.  We could understand them however I couldn’t make sentences quickly, but could say one or two word phrases that were understood.  We arrived home at 3am yesterday – the airlines were very late in Denver due to a crew incident.

I found myself making up sentences all day yesterday as I was running errands.  John knows more vocabulary than I at this point as he has studied Spanish previously.  Today I will begin to review the lessons and construct sentences to send to you and the group – as you suggested below.  Es en BUENO sugestion!!!  I also received the email Merri sent with the 4005 words and started to scroll through those yesterday.

Another: Thank YOU Merri, Gary, Don and Richard for everything you have done to create and bring this wonderful experience to all of us.  It takes a well sychronized team of people to put on an effective, change producing seminar!  I have given many seminars and enjoyed the experience immensely.  The outcome is even better!  Estoy une infantil de Super Thinking and Spanish, y es possible aprender en tiempo.

One delegate even explained how after our course they ended up as the accidental translator: Gary,  I have sent Merri a couple of messages, and  a story of Mike being able to translate yesterday for a Spanish person  who couldn’t understand what a man was trying to tell him!

Dealing with internet service providers and shopping for appliances, etc., normally would have required me hiring a translator to follow me around. While it may not be pretty or 100% grammatically correct, I am understood. Thank you!  Saludos!

Super Thinking plus Spanish courses are among the few I know that not only share valuable information but help the delegates become smarter so they absorb, retain and recall the education more effectively.  The course does this through the power of music… a power we all already have within. Jim is a retired airline pilot who moved to Ecuador a year ago and lived in our Casa Blanca condos for a year.  He has become an Ecuador resident and built a house.   I interviewed him on one of our trips to Cotacachi.

Like so many others I have spoken with who have attended our Super Thinking + Spanish course… he claims to be much happier… more relaxed and has become healthier, shedding medication and weight.

It is interesting that we do not see ourselves ‘creating’ communication in our native tongue; each saying it a little different than the other, and yet still all getting the ‘communication’ across the bridge in our own manner.

We delighted to know you both better, and greatly admire your passion for life and generosity sharing what you have learned.

We are planning to attend the next business seminar you offer. Carolyn is talking about returning for the Fall Spanish Super Thinking class with a girlfriend.

Another a dentist said: I was so delighted with my experience at the Spanish training.  I felt more confident of ability to pronounce Spanish than I ever was of French or German.  Funny… I did not think I remembered any French or German but when I cannot remember the Spanish words the German and French popped up.  Practicing my pronunciation made my trip home go faster. I never enjoyed pronouncing either of the other two, but this was fun. It is hard to fall asleep at the wheel when you are moving your mouth to speak Spanish. It does work your mouth in a different way.  I realized that you have to say each syllable slowly and correctly(until you get it perfectly) and when you do it is impressive.

It was amazing to see us all writing such advanced sentences after a few days and so much more enjoyable than having to go through the alphabet to build the words to build the sentences.

Another Wrote: Dear Gary,  I intended to give it a few days before I wrote to you about my experience in the Spanish + SuperThinking  Course. However, I had such dramatic results today, in the physical rather than the cognitive realm, that I had to share this immediately.

I started my day with Baroque music. Before I began my Spanish lesson, I went through the Mayan Waves Brain Refresher (Brain Sync). I also played an alpha wave composition while I completed a lesson in the morning. I repeated the process this afternoon. Before my high intensity interval training (HIIT) workout in the evening, I put on a gamma brain wave video from you tube faster reading gamma waves help with exercise. I preformed the “Halo Of Sweat” workout from an online fitness site. Around the world, people complete the workout and posts their scores, striving to meet or beat the personal trainer. Frankly, my reps have rarely come close to the reps of the woman featured in the video nor have I ever beat her. Until today.

Not only did I come close to her performance, I surpassed her quite significantly with several exercises. I performed my best in the last exercise, Abs Burn Out. Her scores were 38, 34 and 33 and mine were 60, 40 and 47!

I believe several factors allowed me to achieve this acceleration in athletic ability today:

1. My left and right hemispheres are now harmonizing.
2. The meditation and relaxed concentration techniques I learned are coming more easily to me and effective.
3. My focus and concentration are greatly enhanced.

I am a Pilates professional so to have my exercise regimen improve so swiftly is remarkable. Not only am I now able speak Spanish but I am experiencing optimal health as well. I am deeply grateful to you and Merri for your SuperLearning instruction.  Be well,
