Quito and Mindo Real Estate Tour

Quito and Mindo Real Estate Tour.

Prices for real estate in Quito and the surrounding valleys are still low.  For example below you can see brand new 861 square foot three bedroom condos for $29,999.

Carlos Tobar, who is conducting our Quito and Mindo real estate tour, just sent me this note.

Gary, Quito real estate offers outstanding quality, alternatives and value for expatriates visiting Ecuador.

The picture above shows a shot of the more modern, northern part of Quito, with the impressive Pichincha in the background.

The city is a world heritage renowned for its historic downtown, the largest Spanish colonial town in South America.  The historic colonial city center offers several real estate opportunities, nested in this most impressive colonial ambiance.

However, Quito is characterized as a city of diversity.  The city is over 30 miles long while not  much more than a few miles wide.

The north is more modern, home to most of the banking sector and large business, as well as the more expensive neighborhoods.  The south is more
commercial, with less expensive neighborhoods.  Quito also boasts its surrounding valleys such as the valleys of Tumbaco, Los Chillos, Calderon and Pomasqui.  Here is a map.

quito-real-estate-for-sale

Our Quito – Mindo tours will take us to see opportunities in old town Quito.  We will look at
properties in the northern business sector of Quito, such as these condos located in the
heart of the business, banking and hotel sector of Quito:

quito-real-estate-for-sale

Prices in a modern brand new building such as this are about $64,000 for a 572 square foot
condo.

The general floor plans of the condos are as follows:

As you can tell, Quito offers both modern and classic architecture.  It also offers a wide variety
of prices, depending on what you may be looking for.

For instance, we will also visit this development:

quito-real-estate-for-sale

It is located in the Valley of Pomasqui, very close to the zero latitude “middle of the world”.

This energetic center was known even as far back as the Incas, and they were so drawn to it
that they were not satisfied until they made it part of their empire.

Comfortable and quality town houses are available in this  complex
starting for US$ 29,999 for a cozy 861 square foot 3 bedroom unit.  Here we have a
few shots of the interior of these properties (the furniture is that of the model home but is not
included in the sales price):

As part of our continuing tasting of the variety Quito has to offer, delegates who will attend the
Quito-Mindo tour will visit the higher end project as well, located where the new airport is being built.

quito-real-estate-for-sale

The project lies next to a renowned Golf and Country Club.

It boasts 3.5 acres of green communal areas, fresh air, a privileged micro-climate, in an
exclusive, high-appreciation sector.

quito-real-estate-for-sale

The project is made up of 99 lots to be sold in 2 stages.  Each lot owner will be allowed to build
a single home in each lot, sized 240 m2 or 300 m2 (approximately 2,550 ft2 and 3,200 ft2,
respectively), following general architectural guidelines set forth in the purchase documents.

quito-real-estate-for-sale

Lot prices start at $54,000 for lots that begin at 5,200 square feet.

Our Quito – Mindo tour also offers you the possibility to travel outside of Quito, to the north-
western part of the Province of Pichincha.  We will visit the Mindo area, known for its abundant
bio-diversity (just Google “Mindo” to find out more about this bird-watchers and ecotourism
paradise).

quito-real-estate-for-sale

Mindo is an ecotourism hotspot where nature enthusiast can find plenty of activities and enjoy
their natural surroundings.

quito-real-estate-for-sale

There we will visit the project Arboretto Riverside Villas (ARV), a novel concept in ecotourism
presold villas.   ARV is made up of 36 custom homes, to be built within an extension of 25
acres.   We have built the first model home in ARV, which we will be able to visit during our
tour.

quito-real-estate-for-sale

Prices start at $150,000 for a 1,300 square foot custom home built on a lot of an average of
10,000 square feet.

quito-real-estate-for-sale

The key characteristic of these homes is their transparency and the way
they are immersed in nature:

quito-real-estate-for-sale

Each house has its own outside Jacuzzi, literally allowing you to enjoy nature in the warmth of
your own deck.

quito-real-estate-for-sale

In summary, Quito and the Mindo area have a great deal to offer to those who are looking for a
modern, city life-style as well as to those of you who enjoy a more relaxed way of life in a
smaller town (without being out of reach of the big city).

This is just one more example of Ecuador’s diversity and this tour will provide you the
opportunity to experience the many faces that Quito and Mindo have to offer.   We look forward
to sharing this experience with you.  Regards Carlos.

Real Estate Near Vilcabamba

See below some lower cost real estate near Vilcabamba that is for sale.

vilcabamba-property

Merri and I first visited Vilcabamba in the 1990s.  We thought the village was wonderful and began writing about it.

Yet we did not think that Vilcabamba would be a good place to live. In our minds it was remote and hard to reach. Prices seemed higher than in other parts of Ecuador.

Wow, did we ever miss that mark! Vilcabamba has become one of the most successful retirement destinations in Ecuador.

Because of this, Vilcabamba real estate prices have risen higher than in many  parts of Ecuador.

Since we began writing about Vilcabamba, we have also reviewed valleys near Vilcabamba as a lower cost alternative.

There are several other longevity valleys near Loja that are stunning and have always less in cost and less crowded.

Yungilla is an example.  I wrote this about Yungilla in 2000:

“Yungilla is idyllic…like a Swiss mountain valley covered in Irish emerald green. Explosions of white pampas grass line the road and swaths of forest and cotton wool clouds cover the broad valley floor. Waterfalls spring from the hillsides crashing hundreds of feet. Here, one 30-acre farm with a brand-new, 3-bedroom house had an asking price of only $25,000. Another 3-bedroom house with a central patio (and a tractor) was $30,000.

Yunguilla, about an hour from Cuenca via the newly paved highway, is one of the most beautiful valleys in the world. It’s like a Swiss mountain
valley covered in Irish emerald green – all in South America! Explosions of white pampas grass line the road and paisley swaths of forest and
cotton wool clouds cover the broad valley floor. Huge waterfalls spring from the hillsides like gigantic white snakes crashing hundreds of feet.”

You may not be able to find many more 30 acre farms with a house for $25,000, but there are some pretty low prices out there.

So when the request for the paid advertisement below, for real estate in a valley near Vilcabamba came in, I was pleased to see more moderate priced homes near Vilcabamba. This is a start up situation which does, however, increase risk and makes this unsuitable for those who want a place to live right away.  There may be some opportunity for business people looking to speculate on a new start up in a low cost area… near a higher cost place.

You may well wonder why I would make such an offer and ask why the cost is so low? Let me answer this question frankly and from the heart.

First, it helps us do a better job for you. We feel greatly enriched when we can really help our clients improve their lives. We have learned through years of experience the best way to do this is to meet with you regularly. We can best help you learn how to improve your health and wealth through continual expansion of knowledge.

Second, we gain enormous fulfillment from the many friendships we form through the years. Our friends have enriched our lives tremendously. Let me explain this in more detail.

As a member, you will be part of our international family that meets intensively over the next year to examine ways we can make our lives better. Our goal is beyond just having money. Our goal is to have quantum wealth… good health… wealth and fulfillment through service.

Though I give all course delegates my very best, I cannot help but to do a better job for those who come again and again. As we meet often; your particular wants, needs and desires become clear, and it is easier for me to point you in the right direction.

Another phenomenon is that repeat delegates help each other! They get to know one another, help each other learn, share their insights, make contacts and gain more wealth.

Out associates in Ecuador, are experienced business people who live or work and conduct our real estate and export courses.  They can also act as your local backup for the business.

Lifestyle for Two. There is more! I have learned at my courses that many repeat delegates were couples.

We want couples! As a member of the program, you are entitled to bring another person to every single course or tour. The cost for that extra person will be ZERO!  You can bring whomever you wish. Bring your spouse, a friend, son or daughter, partner, accountant, adviser. You can bring the same person each time or a different person, whomever you choose to accompany you. (Accommodations and air fares relating to the courses are not included for members, delegates or their guests.)

Won’t you join us in this exciting club and share Merri’s and my lifestyle for the next year? We look forward to seeing you at as many courses as possible and sharing this wonderful world of abundance and well being with you!

Ecuador Future

What’s Ecuador’s future… and that in the US and around the world?

On the eve of a new year, a new decade… in a new millennium, these seem fair questions to ask… what comes next?

Every decade has its boom.  In the 1970s it was gold.  The 1980s saw the Japanese stock market turn into a skyrocket. The 1990s was the decade of Wall Street and the 2000s watched oil rise through the roof.

Anyone who caught just one of these trends… and rode it… became rich.

During the 41 years I have been investing abroad, I have enjoyed capturing seven golden trends.

#1: 1970s Gold & Silver.

#2: 1970S Japan , Germany , Switzerland , England , Australia and Hong Kong .

#3: 1980s. The Tigers, Taiwan , Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea & Turkey .

#4: 1990s. South America (which led me to Ecuador ).

#5: 2000s. China , India and Eastern Europe .

#6: Invest in Real Estate Throughout.

#7: Bet Against the US Dollar Throughout.

So what will a big trend be through 2020? Here are three predictions.

One trend I believe in, will be that more people will move south to southern smalltown USA and from North America to Latin America.  One reason for this can be seen from winter shots at our North Carolina farm.

ecuador-future

Here is a December shot of the half mile entrance to…

ecuador-future

our house in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge.

ecuador-future

Merri and I would much rather be working in the sun, here at…

ecuador-future

our house in Florida or our sun filled home in…

ecuador-future

Cotacachi.  Or…

ecuador-future

walking in the warm Pacific sands from our Ecuador beach condo.

This is why I like what I see for Ecuador’s future.

A second trend I believe in will be more home based agriculture. As food prices rise and there are increased concerns about the environment… people will want more food independence and the health benefits of being more involved in their own personal food chain.

This is why Merri and I have added sustainable timber and home crafted woods to our business ventures.

ecuador-future

We added more chickens and…

ecuador-future

now have an…

orange grove in Florida.

Third, the biggest trend in 2010 to 2020 could be in water.

ecuador-future

This is why we looked for a spring fed lake in Florida and…

ecuador-future

purchased our farm on Little Horse Creek.

Yet predictions are just fancy guess work. So here are three tips that can help you spot trends in the new decade.

First, know that there will always be things that none of us know.

Take for example the oil boom of the 20oos… based on ever diminishing oil resources.

Then the US discovers one of the largest oil reserves in the US… ever… in North Dakota.

A US government survey article says: 3 to 4.3 Billion Barrels of Technically Recoverable Oil Assessed in North Dakota and Montana’s Bakken Formation—25 Times More Than 1995 Estimate—

Reston, VA – North Dakota and Montana have an estimated 3.0 to 4.3 billion barrels of undiscovered, technically recoverable oil in an area known as the Bakken Formation.

A U.S. Geological Survey assessment, released April 10, shows a 25-fold increase in the amount of oil that can be recovered compared to the agency’s 1995 estimate of 151 million barrels of oil.

New geologic models applied to the Bakken Formation, advances in drilling and production technologies, and recent oil discoveries have resulted in these substantially larger technically recoverable oil volumes. About 105 million barrels of oil were produced from the Bakken Formation by the end of 2007.

The USGS Bakken study was undertaken as part of a nationwide project assessing domestic petroleum basins using standardized methodology and protocol as required by the Energy Policy and Conservation Act of 2000.

The Bakken Formation estimate is larger than all other current USGS oil assessments of the lower 48 states and is the largest “continuous” oil accumulation ever assessed by the USGS.  A “continuous” oil accumulation means that the oil resource is dispersed throughout a geologic formation rather than existing as discrete, localized occurrences. The next largest “continuous” oil accumulation in the U.S. is in the Austin Chalk of Texas and Louisiana, with an undiscovered estimate of 1.0 billions of barrels of technically recoverable oil.

“It is clear that the Bakken formation contains a significant amount of oil – the question is how much of that oil is recoverable using today’s technology?” said Senator Byron Dorgan, of North Dakota. “To get an answer to this important question, I requested that the U.S. Geological Survey complete this study, which will provide an up-to-date estimate on the amount of technically recoverable oil resources in the Bakken Shale formation.”

The USGS estimate of 3.0 to 4.3 billion barrels of technically recoverable oil has a mean value of 3.65 billion barrels. Scientists conducted detailed studies in stratigraphy and structural geology and the modeling of petroleum geochemistry. They also combined their findings with historical exploration and production analyses to determine the undiscovered, technically recoverable oil estimates.

This had a great impact on the real value of oil and the oil boom.

A second tip is to recognize that there are plenty of booms… not just one…  and we should never stop looking for them… for any reason.

We can see why in a recent New York Times article by By Deborah Sontaga entitled “At 94, She’s the Hot New Thing in Painting.”

Here is an excerpt.  After six decades of very private painting, Ms. Herrera sold her first artwork five years ago, at 89. Now, at a small ceremony in her honor, she was basking in the realization that her career had finally, undeniably, taken off. As cameras flashed, she extended long, Giacomettiesque fingers to accept an art foundation’s lifetime achievement award from the director of the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.

Her good friend, the painter Tony Bechara, raised a glass. “We have a saying in Puerto Rico,” he said. “The bus — la guagua — always comes for those who wait.”

Ecuador-future

Photo of  Carmen Herrera by Todd Heisler/The New York Times

And the Cuban-born Ms. Herrera, laughing gustily, responded, “Well, Tony, I’ve been at the bus stop for 94 years!”

This is why we always keeping looking for the next boom.

The article continues: Since that first sale in 2004, collectors have avidly pursued Ms. Herrera, and her radiantly ascetic paintings have entered the permanent collections of institutions like the Museum of Modern Art, the Hirshhorn Museum and the Tate Modern. Last year, MoMA included her in a pantheon of Latin American artists on exhibition. And this summer, during a retrospective show in England, The Observer of London called Ms. Herrera the discovery of the decade, asking, “How can we have missed these beautiful compositions?”

In a word, Ms. Herrera, a nonagenarian homebound painter with arthritis, is hot. In an era when the art world idolizes, and often richly rewards, the young and the new, she embodies a different, much rarer kind of success, that of the artist long overlooked by the market, and by history, who persevered because she had no choice.

“I do it because I have to do it; it’s a compulsion that also gives me pleasure,” she said of painting. “I never in my life had any idea of money and I thought fame was a very vulgar thing. So I just worked and waited. And at the end of my life, I’m getting a lot of recognition, to my amazement and my pleasure, actually.”

Julián Zugazagoitia, the director of El Museo del Barrio in East Harlem, called Ms. Herrera “a quiet warrior of her art.”

There you have it… the third tip is the most important tip of all… Turn you passion into profit.  If you are doing what you love… you do not mind the waiting… or the effort… because it’s the process of creating your own little boom… not the boom that creates the joy.

Ms. Herrera provides one more clue one how to spot the boom that works for you. Here the clue is explained in the article.

Painting in relative solitude since the late 1930s, with only the occasional exhibition, Ms. Herrera was sustained, she said, by the unflinching support of her husband of 61 years, Jesse Loewenthal. An English teacher at Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan, Mr. Loewenthal was portrayed by the memoirist Frank McCourt, a colleague, as an old-world scholar in an “elegant, three-piece suit, the gold watch chain looping across his waistcoat front.”

Recognition for Ms. Herrera came a few years after her husband’s death, at 98, in 2000. “Everybody says Jesse must have orchestrated this from above,” Ms. Herrera said, shaking her head. “Yeah, right, Jesse on a cloud.” She added: “I worked really hard. Maybe it was me.”

The clue?  Live beyond logic and work hard.  We live in a chaotic… ever changing world where there is so much we cannot know.  Do what you love.  Serve and stay with it as you embrace the change.

La Mirage Cotacachi Garden Hotel & Spa

La Mirage is a garden hotel and spa listed as a Relais and Chateaux property…that is here in tiny Cotacachi!

La Mirage Garden Spa & Hotel is the best luxury hotel.  This is a great place to stay if you are looking for a luxury hotel anywhere in Ecuador.  In fact, La Mirage is a great place to stay if you are looking for luxury anywhere in the world!

The upcoming New Year celebrations reminded me of  last year’s events event in Cotacachi.

Here is a note from Patricia McCormick, a friend, a reader.  She spent New Year’s Eve at the La Mirage Cotacachi spa last year and sent this note:

cotacachi-spa

Happy New Year!  At this time of so much change, may you find peace and joy, and may you manifest all your desires in gratitude.

I went with four friends to La Mirage Relais & Chateaux.  We walked through a cow and sheep pasture to the front gate – just a stone’s throw from our homes in San Miguel.  Can you believe that this extraordinary resort is rated as one of the top ten resorts IN THE WORLD!!!  And it is located in our sleepy little leather village, Cotacachi, population about 6,000.

It is probably the most festive New Year’s Eve celebration in my life – the food was exquisite and there were 12 courses, including 3 sorbets – one being a delicious rosemary sorbet.  The room was decorated with festive abandon and we were entertained with a show of fireworks in the gardens outside our window.  Many balloons were released skyward, spewing sparkles and the grand finale was at midnight when a 3-story structure was lit, igniting a spectacular show of animated figures and breathtaking splurges of lights.  Several men worked all day, preparing the fireworks for the event.

The people in Ecuador love to parade and celebrate – there were many parades that day, the sounds of music and fireworks everywhere.  In fact, I could hear in the distance the people of the little village up the hill from my home partying with music and singing until about ten o’clock New Years’ Day! They are hard-working, gentle and happy people and I am happy to be here enjoying the beginning of a new year in this land of eternal springtime.  What a blessing!

cotacachi-spa

Happy New Year, Love and Light and Blessings to you, Patricia

In a moment, I’ll explain how Ecuador Living subscribers can save as they are immersed in ultra luxury at La Mirage Cotacachi’s premier boutique hotel plus receive special amenities and upgrades.

Merri and I purchased and run a small Cotacachi hotel… Meson de las Flores.  Yet I can say without shame that we are not the best hotel and spa in Cotacachi.  We are definitely second best, but not even close to best because…

five minutes away is La Mirage a Relais and Chateaux Spa.

I really cannot say enough about how lucky Cotacachi is to have La Mirage spa.

We offer a Cotacachi Spa week that starts with a La Mirage Cotacachi spa with a private, personal, hour and a half, Shamanic Purification Treatment. Enjoy the wisdom of our female Shamana who has inherited years of experience from her father a recognized Shaman in this region. Her purification room has been specially designed on indigenous healing principles to unify the body, mind and spirit. She blends relaxation techniques using the rose petal filled float tank and completes your healing process with an hour long aromatherapy spiritual massage.

La Mirage Spa, one of Cotacachi’s best kept secrets. This is a great place to stay if you are looking for a hotel in Cotacachi…and if luxury is valued more than price.

Here is the entrance to the spa at La Mirage Garden Hotel and Spa.

Cotacachi Hotel La Mirage

La Mirage offers  pure luxury…surprising for a spa in a village as small as Cotacachi.   This spa has such high standards that its prices create an incredible value.

The world is full of surprises but Cotacachi is a sleepy village and at the end of a bumpy, grass lined road sits Ecuador’s (and you may even say South America’s) most luxurious garden hotel and spa.

Gardens at Hotel La Mirage.

Cotacachi Hotel La Mirage

Hotel La Mirage is one of Ecuador’s oldest colonial haciendas, located in Cotacachi, ten minutes from the center of Otavalo. The hotel is set in luxuriant gardens full of tropical flowers and wildlife.

As hard as it is to imagine, there are three reasons why you can enjoy even more special treatment at La Mirage.

These three reasons are why you can enjoy this luxury spa hotel in Cotacachi and gain special benefits as an Ecuador Living subscriber.

First… we own an Ecuador hotel.  Hotels work together in Ecuador and offer special referrals to help one another.

Second, for the past 15 years, Merri and I have watched La Mirage become one of the most sacred and exquisite hotel spas we have ever experienced.  It is a vital part of our life in Ecuador. We have remained best friends with the owners over these years, and we are in love with this undeniably special garden hotel and spa.

The spa provides a special breakfast with fresh organic fruits and juices,  an afternoon of massages, resting in the garden, meditating in the most beautiful meditation room we know and afternoon teas.

cotacachi-hotel

This is almost a secret place. Few people can believe that an oasis of such high quality can exist in a tiny remote village high in the Andes. This is one of the most exquisite hotel spas in the world. This is one of the wonders of Ecuador for sure!

Shamana in shamanic treatment room at Hotel La Mirage spa.

Cotacachi Hotel La Mirage

Third,  we have one of, if not, the largest, Ecuador oriented websites that reaches over 18,000 (and growing) readers every day.   We provide La Mirage with a lot of attention. We do not ask for a cent for it… just that they do something special for the subscribers who support us.  So when you subscribe to Ecuador Living you gain extra benefits at La Mirage.

La Mirage hotel grounds in Cotacachi.

Cotacachi Hotel La Mirage

La Mirage offers, the highest, most refined, most elegant and delightful experience with the spa and 5 Star restaurant, organic gardens, horses, alpacas, llamas, small river, tennis courts and exquisite beauty.

There are fifteen luxury rooms at La Mirage and a world class spa with lush private gardens and a spa that is pure luxury.

cotacachi-spa

Whether you are dipping into a jacuzzi or enjoying a cozy eucalyptus fire in one of the many beautifully decorated rooms, you will find fresh roses everywhere. No detail is overlooked.   Guests range from Hollywood stars and US Senators to royalty.  The Queen of Spain chose La Mirage during her stay in Ecuador.

There are also great culinary delights  in the La Mirage kitchen that you can now know and enjoy.

We take most course delegates to visit La Mirage spa at least once during a course and enjoy the great Ecuador cooking there.  The food is incredible.

The chefs are world class, and presentation is at the top of their list. Appetizers are served in individual wooden music boxes, soup is poured hot into your bowl when served and each plate is a work of art. Here I am with delegates at La Mirage.

Here is the risotto starter up close.

The homemade, organic rose ice-cream dessert is out of this world.  Each tiny ball of rose ice-cream hides in the center of a blossom of sugared rose petals.

Everything at La Mirage is exquisite.

If you plan to come to Cotacachi to attend one of our courses or on your own and if you would like to experience this ultimate in luxury, care and beauty, consider La Mirage Garden Hotel and Spa.

We have arranged with La Mirage a special reduced rate for our Ecuador Living subscribers, including a sumptuous breakfast in the glass aviary and gourmet dinner in their glorious dining room…. a complimentary bottle of champagne and a room upgrade when possible.

If you are an Ecuador Living subscriber… contact Bonnie at the Ecuador Living hotline and she’ll provide full details.

Learn how to subscribe to Ecuador Living here.

Our courses and spa retreats and monthly stays are filling up El Meson to the brim…and we are extremely proud to be able to offer you this exquisite alternative.

If you plan to come to Cotacachi to attend one of our courses or on your own and if you would like to experience this ultimate in luxury, care and beauty, consider La Mirage.

We, of course, welcome you to Meson de las Flores. Our rooms start at $59 (plus Ecuadorian 22% service and tax) and you will find us a delight. However if you would enjoy gourmet meals and a room at a world class spa all for less than a similar meal would cost in the West, consider upgrading to La Mirage!

We just added four South coast Ecuador tours that can help you gain extra savings with a multi tour pack.

These extra tours create a dilemma for me. See how below.

Here are our multi tour adventure discounts.

Two Pack… 2 seminar courses & tours $998 Couple  $1,349 Save $149 on couple

Three Pack… 3 seminar courses & tours   $1399 Couple  $1,899 Save $98 single or $348 on a couple or more

Four Pack… 4 seminar courses & tours   $1,699 Couple $2,299 Save $98 single or $697 on a couple or more

Five Pack… 5 seminar courses & tours  $1,999 Couple $2,699 Save $496 single or $1,046 on a couple or more

Six Pack… 6 seminars courses & tours  $2,199 Couple $3,099 Save $795 single or $1,395 on a couple or more

These four new south coast tours and our six pack tour price create a bit of a crisis here.

As you can see above a six pack costs $3,099.  This is already a really low price for a tour that last up to 21 days (under $150 a day).

But as you will see below, our International Club membership which allows you and a guest to attend up to 56 courses and tours in 2010  (fees would be $40,947 for all these courses individually) is only $2,999.

Which would you choose… 6 courses and tours for $3,099 or those same 6 courses and tours plus 50 more for $2,999?

“Duh,” I said when this was pointed out to me.

So our only solution is to raise the International Club membership to $3,500… still a terrific deal… but $501 more than before.

Save $37,457…plus $501.  I will not raise the International club fee until January 2010. Enroll in the International Club now at the original fee of $2,999.

Ecuador Birding Business

Ecuador Birding Business

Ecuador birding is big business that can create a business opportunity for you… maybe even more.

Yesterday’s message looked at how birds reflect patterns of nature.  Perhaps this is why bird watching is such a popular sport.

Merri and I love watching Ecuador’s birds on the beach, the…

Frigate Birds as they swarm and…

ecuador-birding

pelicans sliding silently on a coastal cushion of air.

ecuador-birding

In the Andes the hummingbirds… flit into…

our hotel’s courtyard.

ecuador-birding

Ecuador’s Amazon has an abundant variety  of bird life as well.

ecuador-birding

Here is a reader’s question about birding in Ecuador… thoughts on where to see them… and how to profit from Ecuador birds.

The reader wrote: Does Cuenca have enough birds and rain forest for an avid nature lover?  I would want to experience these daily not just on weekends or occasionally?

My reply: Cuenca has some great birding nearby but is definitely not a rain forest.

Cuenca is more dry than wet.  The rain forests are a bit away.  In the nearby Cajas National park, there are more than 150 species of birds. There is a link on where to check for bird watching routes in Cajas.

There are even better places to watch birds. The closest is a cloud forest only an hour and a half from Quito in Mindo.

ecuador-birding

You can watch the clouds walk across the tree tops in the Mindo cloud forest.

Due to its critically important role in the conservation of numerous rare and endemic species, Mindo was designated South America’s first Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International in 1997. Mindo is an area of historic ornithological studies, where early collectors and ornithologists discovered or collected many species.

Mindo lies within the Chocó Endemic Bird Area (EBA) and Chocó Biogeographic Region, which is considered one of the world’s richest biogeographic areas. This area supports the largest number of restricted-range birds of any EBA in the Americas, over 50 species being endemic to the area.
ecuador-birds

The Cock of the Rock often observed in Mindo and Intag.

Mindo is also home to the greatest number of endemic montane birds of any place in the world (Birds of Ecuador, Ridgley and Greenfield).
2000-2005 Christmas Bird Count (CBC) – sponsored by the Audubon Society.  Mindo has been among the top three highest bird counts in the world for the last six  years. This is with over 2,000 locations participating. Each location is a 25 kilometer radius, and the count lasts for 24 hours. Mindo had the highest count in the year 2000 with 350 bird species recorded, and in past years has exceeded the 400 bird species mark.

This creates bird watching business opportunity.

Ecuador also offers many exciting export ideas based around bird life.

Our Ecuador export course helps you learn how to take unusual products, make them unique and then adapt them to a niche market.

Take for example this excellent botanical artist, Monteros.

We’ll see art from Montero.

P1030264

Artist Montero produces exquisite watercolors for as little as $25 such as those below

P1030283 P1030284

He did this wonderful piece for us. This painting is great art and is exportable as is…but…to my way of thinking this is just the beginning.

I took this piece and made it my business card!

ecuador-business-idea

My US address and number are on the reverse side. The art, color separations, printing and paper (recycled velum) are superb. These are the nicest business cards I have ever had.

Now comes the adaptation that makes this product utterly unique. One of our guests here is a globally known naturalist and birding guide. My suggestion is that he creates a program for his bird watching clients.

Monteros paints their favorite bird. The water color (or in oil) is theirs to hang in their office or home and then they also get business cards with the same unique picture.

We are seeing more and more success by delegates from our import export course.

Former delegate Bonnie Keogh built a successful Ecuador export business and now conducts our Ecuador export tours reports:

ecuador-exports-bonnie

Here is Bonnie with Consuelo at our hotel Meson de las Flores where our Ecuador export tour delegates stay.

Ecuador exports are a fun way to gain a second income, early retirement or build a substantial business. There is great opportunity and this type of business really helps the poor here as well.

It’s not often the case that a quick 1.5 hour drive takes you from a bustling metropolis to a virtually unspoiled nature reserve. Yet, that’s what you get in Ecuador. The country has 40 nationally protected areas, covering a staggering 12.2 million acres or 18.81% of Ecuador’s landmass.  And these protected areas do not even take into consideration the country’s numerous protected forests, known locally as “bosques protectores”. These represent natural reserve areas that are subject to a limited economic activity but whose primary purpose is the preservation of biodiversity and sources of natural springs and lakes. In a world where unspoiled nature is getting scarcer by the day, guess what is proving to be the biggest attraction of Ecuador’s tourism and expat sectors?

The other big attraction of Ecuador is the comparatively low prices.  Unlike in other countries, where properties in beautiful locations are already trading at a scarcity premium, Ecuador actually offers eco-properties at bargain prices.

Natural beauty and all that at bargain prices – how could an investor possibly go wrong with such a combination?

And because there is such a staggering array of nature reserves in Ecuador, you still have a chance to find one or the other truly undiscovered gem among the country’s protected regions. The kind of area that a few years down the road, people will say, “Oh, had I only known at the time so that I could have gotten in while it was still a bargain-priced ground floor opportunity.”

Learn more about our Ecuador export tour here.

Everyone has heard of the Galapagos Islands, the place that is now visited by 170,000 visitors per year.  Still, few people have heard of Mindo yet. Mindo is currently visited by just 20,000 foreign tourists per year. Type it into Google and you’ll notice that this place is only just being discovered. Our bet is that, the visitor numbers of Mindo will catch up with Galapagos.

Why?

First the cost difference is phenomenal.  Second, Mindo is a nature reserve wonderland that has few equals.

If anyone has ever even heard of the place, it’s usually because of the unusually high diversity among birds and plants. There are…

-    430 species of birds (more than on the entire North American continent; put another way, Mindo makes up 0.002% of the world’s land mass but 10% of the world’s bird species are found there)

-    370 species of orchids (out of the 4,000 species found in Ecuador, which makes it the country with the world’s highest number of orchid species)

-    300 species of butterflies

Mindo is actually a town, a river and an area. It’s 48 miles due northwest of Quito. The area is at 4,200 feet above sea level, which makes it the mid-point elevation between the highland Quito area and the coast.

Mindo is synonymous to harmony in nature.  It is a place for deep relaxation and provides an escape opportunity from modern-day life’s stress.  Yet, there is ample mobile phone coverage, Internet access and opportunities for community services.

Holidaymakers and tourist industry investors alike have recently started to realize what potential this area holds. The scenery appeals to photographers and explorers for its outstanding panoramic views. Eco-tourism in general is booming, and bird-watching in particular is one of the world’s fastest growing recreational activities. Many birdwatchers come from a wealthy demographic, i.e. it’s not backpackers who are pursuing this sport but well-off people in their 40s, 50s and 60s (or older).

Mindo is also a perfect area for anyone wanting to keep fit and entertained: Horseback riding, mountain biking, tubing and rafting can all be organized locally, just as much as you can go hiking, fishing and swimming. All this is set in a valley that is a subtropical cloud-forest and which is ideally situated between the upper temperate zone and the lower humid tropical forests. Mindo is made for tourism development.
It is ideally suited to invite your kids and grand-children on an adventure-filled excursion into the safe rainforests of Mindo, with activities such as hiking along trails, jumping off small waterfalls, river walking along the many streams, tubing down the major waterways, or just taking in the natural surroundings.

Best of all, it’s the natural playground of Quito. Most of the drive to Mindo is a scenic route on a well-maintained road. The government is continuously improving the area’s infrastructure, such as installing a new electricity distribution grid, improving the town’s police station and providing it with a new patrol car and motorcycles and by setting up an organic waste management facility. Private investors have started to move in. A number of weekend-home developments have sprung up, and new hotels and restaurants have opened. Nevertheless, Mindo is still a charmingly tiny and unspoiled village.

Mindo offers you all of the following:

- Owning a property set within pristine nature.

- A retirement home where you can afford staff, with first world health facilities just 90 minutes drive away in Quito.

- The ideal place in which to learn Spanish (or, where to give English classes to local children if you like volunteering work).

- Clean air, fresh water, fresh organic fruits and a de facto detox lifestyle without even having to pay a premium for it (costs of living are extremely low actually).

- Just about any outdoor sport you can imagine.

- Being in a bird-watching paradise year-round.

- Benefiting from Ecuador being an up-and-coming tourism and retirement haven (and from its new international airport in Quito).

- A base from where to explore Ecuador and South America

- And countless more aspects, which are best explored by doing a little tour of the area…

Yet, despite all its attractions, Mindo is still all a ground-floor opportunity. A yearly total of 20,000 foreign tourists is hardly noticeable. Investing in Mindo is a bit like investing on the French Riviera in the 1950s, buying a historic apartment in Venice in the 1970s, or a villa in Costa Rica in the 1980s. The attractions and the beauty are already apparent, but it has not yet become fashionable to have a property there and few people have heard of it.

Needless to say, this is the time to get in on the action.

This is why we included Mindo in our Quito/Mindo real estate tour.  As part of our Quito real estate tour, we’ll take you where Quiteños increasingly go to have a nice time with their family when they fancy a weekend break.

Mindo will become more accessible when the new airport in Quito opens in 2010.   This is why Mindo is likely to become one of the iconic cornerstones of the upcoming marketing campaigns of the Ecuadorian Ministry of Tourism. With its world class appeal, Mindo is bound to become better known.

What this means for property investors?

The formula is quite simple:

-    With growing local and international tourism, there is an opportunity to create rental properties for extra income.

-    Because of the purchasing power of nearby Quito, holiday homes in the Mindo area are set to increase in value over the years to come.

-    Anyone fancying the idea of living in unspoiled nature but with the hustle and bustle of a proper city nearby, should check out the option to actually live in the Mindo area.

The two areas are worlds apart in one way, but they are connected in many other ways. That is why we have combined a tour of Quito with a detour to Mindo.

Ecuador is a small country, and personal contacts go a long way.  That’s where Carlos Tobar comes in, the man who will be guiding the entire Quito/Mindo Real Estate Tour.

Carlos is assembling a preview list of available properties (including one special deal that has not been offered before). We’ll pass the list on to you as soon as it’s ready. You now know what’s special about Mindo in general. And you’ll soon get a much clearer idea about the kind of property deals available in this area.

Delegates gained so much useful information on the October 2009 southern Ecuador beach tour that we have added this tour as a regular part of our 2010 multi tour adventure.

We have been our expanding our focus in Ecuador and this helps readers look in the southern coastal areas.

Ecuador beach property has always represented incredible value and this expansion means we can help readers see a much larger part of the Ecuador coast.

ecuador-beach-map

Those who have been reading our messages for any length of time know that we have focused our efforts on the middle portion of Ecuador’s beach from Manta to Bahia in the province of Manabi.

However there are many other great Ecuador beach areas that you may want to visit.

I recently sent readers an article “SEE SALINAS LIKE A LOCAL” by Amy Pinoargote  that said:

Ecuador-beach-salinas

The Salinas Malecon area has long been a favorite destination.

Salinas is one of the favorite in Ecuador for good reasons.  It has beautiful beaches, with calm waters perfect for swimming, water sports, activities or just relaxing.   Along the Malecon, or beachfront promenade, you will find a variety of restaurants, hotels, bars and other attractions.  During the summer season there is even a giant sandcastle.  If you “tip” the sculptor $1, he will take your photo.  However, to really enjoy all that Salinas has to offer, you need to get to know it like a local.

Ecuador-beach-salinas

Pose for a photo by the giant sandcastle

Salinas at a Glance

There are two seasons in Ecuador.  Summer runs from December to April and winter from May to November.  The summer in Salinas is usually sunny, with occasional showers.  Daytime temperatures reach the low to mid 80s and nighttime temperatures run in the low 70s.  The winter tends to be overcast to partially sunny, but not rainy.  The winter is actually the drier time of the year and temperatures run about 10 degrees cooler than during the summer.   Because Salinas is semi-arid, it doesn’t experience sticky, tropical humidity.  This makes a comfortable environment for outdoor activities all year long.

As with most beach towns, the dress code in Salinas is casual.  It is perfectly fine to go from beach to restaurant.  Along with your swimsuit, pack plenty of shorts and short sleeved shirts, plus pants and long sleeves if you are visiting in the winter months.   Have a sweater handy, as some days are cooler than others.

Where to Eat

The Salinas area is a prime spot to enjoy fresh fish and seafood, as well as other Ecuadorian specialties.

A great spot to sample those specialties is Delícias de Ecuador, located near the entrance to the Costa de Oro neighborhood on the main road that runs from Salinas to La Libertad.

Prices here are very reasonable.  The daily lunch special or “Almuerzo” includes a soup, entrée and beverage, usually priced at $2.50.

Don’t ask for changes or substitutions on the lunch special; it comes the way it is.  Other options include Seco de Pollo, which is chicken stewed in a tomato-based sauce, and Menestra, lentils or beans served with your choice of grilled chicken, beef or fish.

If a relaxing lunch at the beach, complete with a hammock for a post-meal siesta is your style, drive about 30 minutes north of Salinas to San Pablo.  In this fishing village you will find cabana style restaurants right on the sand, specializing in fresh fish and seafood.

Las Manabas restaurant is one of the best.  If you can’t decide what to order from the extensive menu, try the Chupe de Pescado (fish stew) or Corvina (a mild tasting sea bass), cooked to order.  Most meals run between $3 and $5.

Ecuadorians typically eat a big meal at lunch and a light dinner.

Roca Parilla is the spot to enjoy an Ecuadorian style dinner.  Located a block off the Malecon, it opens at about 6 p.m.  Place your order at the counter, then take your receipt to the grill.  Specialties, which are typically priced from 50 cents to $1 each, include:

Chuzos -shrimp, chicken, beef or sausage grilled on a skewer
Torta de Papa – potato pancake filled with cheese
Torta de Choclo – corn pancake (this one is usually a favorite!)
Muchín – a yucca croquet filled with cheese

No trip to Salinas is complete without a visit to the Cevicherías, casual outdoor eating areas a few blocks off the Malecon that specialize in ceviche.  Shrimp ceviche in a tangy salsa is a good choice.  Shellfish and fish ceviche are also available.  Be aware that the shellfish or fish will not be cooked in the traditional manner.  The citrus juice in the salsa is said to “cook” the fish.  If you have concerns about eating uncooked fish, go with the shrimp version, which is cooked.

Things to See

If you want to browse for souvenirs, visit Mercado de Artesanias, an outdoor flea market in the Chipipe area of Salinas, where you can buy a variety of Ecuadorian handicrafts.

To get a glimpse of days gone by, visit the Museo de Sumpa.  This small, but well thought out museum features exhibits of artifacts from the early residents of the Santa Elena peninsula, including the Las Vegas culture.  It also features a Las Vegas burial site of the “lovers of Sumpa,” mummified remains of two people that appear to have died in an embrace.  You can also tour a cane dwelling typical of those built by the early settlers.

Enjoy a relaxing evening drive a few miles across the Santa Elena peninsula to the Punta Carnero beach, where you can see some of the most beautiful sunsets in Ecuador.  On your way back to Salinas, pass by the Malecon of La Libertad and stop for an evening stroll.

Ecuador-beach-salinas

Whether dining, sunsets or beach activities are your idea of a fun time, you will find it in Salinas.

Ecuador-beach-salinas

Gerardo & Amy Pinoargote spend their time between their home in Florida and Salinas and together with relatives are building and managing Spondylus II, a small beachfront development in the Costa de Oro area of Salinas, about 2 miles from the Malecon.

This is an area they like due to its privacy, great beach for walking, sunbathing and water sports. Yet it is just a short ride to dining and shopping in the central area.

Spondylus II  is a family business consisting of three towers. Tower A1 is sold out, except for a ground floor ocean front 1000 square foot unit. Several one and two bedroom suites are still available in tower A2, priced from $49,500 to $50,500.

Larger 1300 square foot units are also still available, priced under $110,000. Tower B has just been release for sale and features larger units (1400 – 1500 square feet), in the $120,000 – $135,000 price range.

Spondylus II offers the following amenities… beachfront pool & social area, a workout center, 24 hour security and the Pacific Ocean as a front yard.  All units feature granite kitchen counter tops, tile floors, tile baths, inset ceiling light fixtures and wooden kitchen cabinets.

Now it is possible to see Salinas like a local with Amy and her husband acting as your hosts and guides.

Amy and Gerardo Pinoargote will conduct four Ecuador southern coastal real estate tours for us on the following dates.

Mar 28-29. 2010
May 28-29, 2010
Sept 20-21, 2010
Nov 22-23, 2010

On this tour you can get to know Salinas property and the real estate along the beaches north of Salinas.

This is an opportunity to view more than a dozen properties and get tips from experts who are living in this area right now.  You save time, risk and zero in with help from those “in the know”.

The tour makes your real estate investigation efficient and productive but also allows time for relaxing in the evenings and enjoying the beaches.  Plus as you’ll see in a moment could save you thousands should you ever decide to buy in this area.

Here are a few of the properties you’ll see:

•    New 2 bedroom condo located directly on a tranquil beach in popular Salinas… $55,000.

•    3 bedroom, 3 bathroom house with ocean views in the most popular complex in Olon…. $100,000.

•    Large house on a ¼ acre lot near Montanita, complete with basketball court, ample parking and caretaker’s cottage that could be a bed & breakfast… $250,000.

Here is an example of the type of Salinas coastal beach condos for sale you’ll see. This was viewed on the October Ecuador South Coast Real Estate Tour.

This is a property on the tour where the tour operator is offered a 2% discount to Ecuador Living subscribers who are on the tour.

Amy Pinoargote who led the tour wrote:   This is a 5 bedroom townhouse for resale in Spondylus I.  It is listed at $79,000.  It is a small complex with cobblestone streets and a nice pool area.  It is about 1/2 a mile from the beach, conveniently located to shopping.

Here is a Salinas Ecuador coastal update sent to us by Amy Pinoargote.

salinas-picture

Ecuador is known for the Galápagos Islands, the Andes Mountains and the Amazon Jungle.  Did you know that it is also home to the westernmost point in continental South America – the “Chocolatera,” at the tip of the Santa Elena Peninsula in Salinas?

This carries strategic significance. During the World War II era it was home to an American military base.  Now it is occupied by the Ecuadorian armed forces.  However, that doesn’t mean that it is closed to the public.  Visitors simply need to check in at the main gate, where they are asked to leave their driver’s license with the guard.  It will be returned when you check out.  Don’t be alarmed that the guards wear fatigues and carry guns.  Keep in mind that this is normal dress for a military base.

There are no signs or billboards announcing that you have arrived as far west as you can go.  Instead follow signs for the Chocolatera.  You will know you have arrived when you see a black and white lighthouse.  In Spanish chocolatera refers to the container used to make hot chocolate, which is whisked until foamy.  It is said that the waves crashing against the rocky shoreline look like the foam on top of hot chocolate.

salinas-picture

Be sure to wear sturdy shoes.  The terrain is rough and rocky.  Pay attention when you venture towards the edge.  Large waves can suddenly top the cliffs and could even knock you off your feet.  The Ecuadorians say, only half in jest, that if the fall onto the rocks below doesn’t kill you, the sharks lurking in the area will.

Before leaving the base, travel a short distance east from the Chocolatera to the Mar Bravo beach.   It is marked with a sign and lined by a row of tiki huts on the sand.  Surfers say this is the place to find the best waves in Salinas.   This secluded beach is also the perfect spot for a stroll or just to relax and enjoy the sound of the surf.

salinas-picture

During the Ecuadorian winter (North American summer) the rocky outcropping at the eastern end of Mar Bravo beach becomes home to a group of sea lions.

salinas-picture

You will get the best view from the elevated observation area.  And be sure to take your binoculars or use the zoom on your camera to get a closer look.

No matter what time of year you visit Salinas, make sure to include the Clocolatera in your itinerary.

Economic turmoil today will create more future prosperity then ever before…for those….who accept change and adapt.

This is why we bring together experienced, like minded souls, who take a positive view and think outside the box..in a constructive…thoughtful way.

Merri and I are in our 41st year of organizing courses, seminars and newsletters about international and quantum lifestyles.

The importance of this sharing…by like minded souls…was reinforced when a delegate from a course sent an email that said:

My Dearest Merri and Gary, Thank you for your most gracious hospitality last weekend. I am just thrilled at being a part of your group. You and Gary were exactly as I imagined you to be, warm friendly, kind, considerate, genuine, helpful, fun, sincere, what else can I say……I felt so comfortable in your presence and learned so much in your course. I was sad to leave the farm that Sunday afternoon. You made us all feel so welcome and cared about.

You were so kind to make arrangements for a ride with the other delegates from the Charlotte airport. They were so nice to me and so helpful, by the time the weekend was over I felt like they were my long lost brothers. Monday morning we all had breakfast at the airport together and I was so sad to see them go, I was sad the weekend was over, perhaps sad is not the right word for how I was feeling perhaps Gratitude is a better way to describe it. Grateful for having the opportunity to share the weekend with such wonderful, like minded Human Beings, in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina. Thank you Merri and Gary…………..Thanks to you I now have new hope and a new direction to move forward in my life. Thanks to you I am so ready to move to Ecuador and begin a new life. I just have to figure out what I am going to do and how to do it……… I know by attending your classes and conferences that through education and due diligence I will make the right choices.

This delegate’s comments about “belonging and feeling like a brother” to the other delegates is a wonderful refrain we have heard from our readers, year after year.

This why I want to share how you can attend 56 of our investment, business, Spanish, real estate and export, courses, tours in 2010 worth $40,947.

20 years ago Merri and I created a way that readers can join us to be immersed in a year-long learning program through our International Club.  The ideas behind this program began 21 years ago in Vienna, Austria while we were conducting a course there. One of our older delegates, had some sort of attack. The first fear was heart trouble. Several delegates took him to the hospital. Others stayed with him there. I don’t think that delegate was alone for a minute!

What impressed Merri and me was that no one asked the delegates to help this man. The friendships of delegates sharing many courses had just grown so strong that it was a natural reaction, just as if a family member was ill. Fortunately, it was only travel fatigue and the delegate didn’t miss a session of the course!

When you join our International Club 2010 you become part of a special family. The very first member to join the club all those years ago wrote,

“Thank you for the enjoyable and informative courses. I am pleased to be part of your international family and look forward to continuing my education at the next course.”

His feeling struck a familiar chord. It has always been one of my greatest satisfactions to see how much fun delegates have getting together, sharing information and making friendships. These courses somehow draw together like-minded souls. For this reason some delegates come back again and again. They come to learn, but also to be with their many friends made at the courses.

When like-minded souls get together again and again to discuss a common purpose, magic happens! I can’t explain it in any other way-but it is true. In a way our meetings are almost like family reunions. Perhaps it is getting together and reflecting on what has been said and what has been happening. Learning with those who are also interested in the world creates thoughts that multiply the value of what we gain. This is hard to describe but results are most powerful and wonderful!

This is to me is as important as the great financial benefit of attending 52 courses that would cost $40,947 if all booked separately.

See why and our 2010 schedule below.

We started and have continued this program for 20 years because there are wonderful benefits from having repeat delegates at courses. Having repeat delegates makes the whole course somehow more exciting for all. Being a repeat delegate makes it easier to make and keep wealth and to lock in the knowledge you gain. It’s an exciting lifestyle. We have fun, gain adventure, discovery and friendships and share ways to improve our health and wealth!

We have more than doubled our courses in 2010… 56 courses and tours, two in the Blue Ridge of North Carolina, three in Central Florida and the balance in Ecuador.  Few club members actually attend every course and tour…  but you can if you desire. If you attend even a few of the courses, you gain considerable savings.

For those not interested or unable to visit Ecuador, we have our North Carolina courses in the summer when it is cool here in the Blue Ridge Mountains and don’t forget the autumnal beauty in October…. plus in Florida during the winter.  Each US course is attached to an Ecuador tour so you gain information in the US and then travel with others to Ecuador for experience (if you desire).

Here are the 56 courses and tours you can attend free. Plus there is even one more savings you will see below.

Ecuador Thanksgiving Trek

Ecuador Thanksgiving Christmas Trek Free

ecuador-Thanksgiving

Today is Thanksgiving in the USA and we give special thanks to all of you who help support this site.  To show our appreciation we have organized a free Ecuador holiday trek for early December.   The savings on Christmas shopping are so great you can almost have a trip to Ecuador free. You can read everything about this free Ecuador Thanksgiving trip in a moment.

ecuador-Thanksgiving

First may I share why Merri and  are so thankful.

A couple days ago, a reader sent this note:

As stated earlier, travel restrictions based on immunization status may be in the cards. This video indicates Ecuador will impose mandatory vaccinations in the near future:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-xwzUZPxXA. What are we going to do now?

I clicked on this link and saw that the video had been removed so I sent this reply:  This video has been removed so I cannot comment… but I suspect that the data was inaccurate hence the removal.  There are always some things we do not know… but I have heard this rumor for over a year and have seen nothing to support the claim or add any validity to it.

These may seem like times of diminished liberties and they are in many ways. I never underestimate the stupidity that governments will display in times of panic.   There are ways though to mitigate these dangers.  I invite you to read my article “Ecuador Diversified.”

Diversification is one important step in a freedom lifestyle, but the real freedoms come from changes within… not without.   We need to live in ways that protect our health, clear thinking and spirit so we have the best ability to embrace change.  When we are diversified and in top condition physically, mentally and spiritually, we can put ourselves in the hands of God and adapt gracefully.

This is a better way to live than always worrying about the sky falling.  This is our 41st year of business and we have seen so many panics… the Nuclear Halocaust… The US Bankruptcy of 1995.  Y2K…  the SARS Epidemic and many more.

Yet here we are!  The sky is still up there and looks pretty darn good to me and for this we give thanks every day.

The best way to adapt to any changes in your economy or society is to hone our abilities to serve.

Ecuador Thanksgiving Trek Free

On Thanksgiving Merri and I give special thanks to all of you who help support this site.  To show our appreciation we have organized a free Ecuador Thanksgiving  trek for early December.

There are innumerable types of textiles in Otavalo.  Cotton… wool.

Any delegate to any of our seminars, tours or paid subscribers to Ecuador Living, Tangled Web or our Multi Currency Course are invited to attend.

Christmas shopping savings for authentic Ecuadorian crafts can dramatically reduce the cost of your Ecuador visit.

This Ecuador Christmas Trek is especially suited for those who attending Blaine Watson’s December course on astrology.

Thanksgiving is a day of great power.  There is enormous strength derived from  family and friends uniting together everywhere in prayer and celebration to give thanks to the Divine for the gifts and good fortune in their lives.

There is an astrological aspect to Thanksgiving as it always falls on the last Thursday of November.  Astrologically Thursday is ruled by Jupiter, the planet called “the Great Benefic”.  Jupiter’s energies can actually increase the blessings and good deeds of this day. Jupiter also magnifies whatever is held in your prayers and good wishes.  Let us harness Jupiter’s intensified energy together to increase the power of gratitude to some important people in our lives; our parents and family   friends, or anyone who has done a good deed.

Express your gratitude to them through Secret Acts of Kindness. Whether you tell them about your gift to them or not, the weight of your good will make the world a more positive place.

Finally a Thanksgiving Inspiration and Business Idea

Todd Smith attended our self publishing course several years ago and has developed an excellent web business turning his passion for photography into a profit.

He recently sent this Thanksgiving note:

A Big Thank You.  I’ve had a lot to be thankful for around here lately.  Over the last month, thirteen people have helped upload new unframed prints to my website.  We now have 294 unframed prints, and a total of 479 products on the entire site.

There is no way I could have done it myself.  This Thanksgiving I’m grateful for these generous and hard workers:

Alice Warren, Debbie Bruce, Deb Chessell, Wendee Lee, Gail Cammerata, Joy Bolster, Shelley Spruit, Karen Kelly, Heather Farha, Sarah Miller, Inge van Rosmalen, Joy Bolster, and Heather Farha.

A Special Offer for You at Thanksgiving

I’m also grateful as always to you, my readers.  You make sharing photography a joy for me.  Your feedback always inspires me to keep on looking for another subject for these newsletters.

As a thank you, I’m offering you a special deal on my calendar this week only:  Until Sunday, November 29 you can Buy 3 Get 1 Free!

Shhhh… it’s a secret.  You won’t see this offer advertised on my site.  But now you know. Just between you and me, you can buy 6 and get 2 free, buy 9 and get 3 free.  The sky’s the limit.  :) But don’t delay.  This deal won’t last.

The calendars make perfect stocking stuffers or inexpensive gifts for your child’s piano teacher, dance teacher, or art teacher… or for your favorite health food store checker, postman or computer repairman.

Give something people will remember you for all year long.

An Easy Opportunity to Earn

Would you like to earn a few extra dollars for the holiday season?  Do you need a little extra cash to spend on gifts this year?

Why not become a rep for Todd Smith Photography?

If you have a few hundred friends on Facebook, you can earn money promoting my calendar.  If you can show my calendars or cards to your friends in person, you could make some extra money.

If you have a blog, you could earn some money pointing people to my site.  If you have a newsletter, you could do the same.  If you use Twitter or any social media, you could easily earn some money promoting my calendar.

If you belong to a club or sports team or choir, why not bring some calendars to show around?  You might be surprised by how well they sell.

If your kid’s school, or band is looking for a fundraiser, we can help.  If your kid likes selling door to door, here’s the perfect product.

I’m willing to pay you handsomely for your work getting the word out.

Sell 100 calendars and you’ll earn over $600.  Sell 10 calendars and earn over $60.  It’s that easy.

Please reply to this email if you’re interested.

Happy Thanksgiving!

See you with the next photo newsletter in a couple of weeks.  Todd

This is good marketing. You can see how Todd has developed his ability to serve at his Todd Smith Photography website.

Whether you are in the USA today or elsewhere… gratitude is one of the most powerful positive thought processes because it leads to joy.

Fear leads to anger which is more expressive than all emotions except joy.  Most people use anger as their main emotion because when it is such an expressive emotion, it helps them engage in expression and allows them to discuss their feelings and activate events.

Joy however is even more powerful and much healthier and effective.  Gratitude can get you to joy!

Thanks.

Gary

Ecuador Singles

Ecuador Singles are very safe in many parts of Ecuador.

A reader recently sent this note. Hello Gary,  I have thoroughly enjoyed reading all your emails on Ecuador.  I would love to visit you when I have some funds available, and because of the economy my funds are non existent for travel now.  I have been told by several people and particularly by a Panamanian friend (female), that Ecuador is very dangerous because of the Colombian drug situation.  Crime is big and is it dangerous for a single female such as myself, to go there.

Here is my reply.  There is a popular misconception that Ecuador is a dangerous place.

This is like saying New York City  is a dangerous place.  Sure there is danger in some parts of New York. My research suggests that if you are in Manhattan and go to East and Central Harlem it can be a bit sketchy. Ditto for Washington Heights.   In Brooklyn, East New York, Brownsville and Crown Heights may not be good places to stroll at night.

Yet overall New York City has the lowest crime rate among the ten largest cities in the United States.  Since 1991, the city has seen a continuous fifteen-year trend of decreasing crime.

Then there are those who know what to do and are safe even in dangerous places. One site I researched said of East Harlem:  I have an uncle, who lived with his wife in one of the housing projects in East Harlem and manage to raised three children there since living there in the 80’s and 90’s. But he just moved out about a year ago. He said that the changes in the area got much better after the 2000’s. He said, he would stay, but they already had saved enough money and already buy property in Puerto Rico.

This is true of Ecuador as well. There are places you won’t find me walking around and I pretty well know what to do… how to look out.  I have only been robbed three times in 41 years of global travel… once in London and twice in the US… all at home or within two blocks of home.

Yet many parts of Ecuador are far safer than in North America.  We have dozens of single women readers who have moved from the US and Canada now living in Ecuador and have never heard a single complaint. They are probably safer in Ecuador than in most US cities.

I have written about this extensively at this site. If you have concerns please search the phrase “ecuador crime” at this site.  You will see numerous recent articles we have published.

There is also a good BBC article about crime in South America.  You will notice that the article does not mention Ecuador as one of the high crime areas in Latin America.

Ecuador has always seemed like a very safe place to us. We have taken thousands of people to Ecuador and though groups and tourists are always targets for crime… wherever they travel in the world… we have never experienced a violent incident.

From a security point of view one has to be on the lookout for pick pockets in tourist areas but other than that our thousands of readers who have visited Ecuador report few problems…  as mentioned not one incidence of violence.  We advise people at this time not to stay or visit the area of Mariscal Sucre nor go anywhere near the Colombian border or in the province of Esmeraldas.  Crime in Guayaquil in the 14 years we have been there was once bad but due to government measures is not as bad now.  Parks in Quito have trouble with theft and the like and it is good to just avoid these areas.

Our site covers our thoughts on risk extensively.

Here are links to just a few of the numerous articles we have posted about Ecuador safety.

Ecuador Travel Tip

Here is an Ecuador travel tip for those who plan to visit the high altitudes in the Andes. Drink Canella (cinnamon) panella (unrefined cane sugar) tea when in Quito and at other high Andean altitudes. This is a shamanic tip we share with all our visitors who visit us.  This tea helps combat altitude problems.

This is a simple remedy for altitude sickness.  An alternative is to drink cinnamon and honey.

Cinnamon and honey.  These two ingredients are used by the shamans in so many ways (they are great bee keepers).

Here is a purification formula we learned from a Shaman who lived high in the Andes. Though the village where he lived had no running water, the locals always glowed and their skin looked fresh and clean. I questioned their secret and this is what they said. This cleansing is delightful and works inside and out!

Take six packets of camomile tea, six long cinnamon sticks and a handful of black cardamom.

Boil them thoroughly in a couple quarts of water. Set aside a cup or two to drink. Dilute the balance in three to five gallons of water as hot as you can stand. Get in a bathtub or shower. Sit in a meditative pose, relax and slowly ladle cup after cup over your head and entire body. When through, do not rinse or towel dry. Let your hair and body dry naturally. You’ll feel clean with a warm glow, smell like apple pie and your skin and hair will shine!

Enjoy drinking this tea as much and often as you like as well. This is a sweet, gentle secret that you can enjoy anytime, anywhere.

Shamans in the Amazon use cinnamon as well. La Mirage is a Relais and Chateaux spa, our favorite has an Cofan Amazon Treatment inspired by the indigenous inhabitants of Ecuador’s Amazon and their use of native plants of the rain forest.

Cotacachi Spa

The Amazon room filled with antiques and with its own fireplace.

“First you enjoy a tub infused with guayusa and ishpingo (cinnamon) leaves, both plants found only in the Amazon.  Ishpingo is the Quechua word for the native Ecuadorian “Cinnamon” tree Ocotea quixos (Lauraceae), found only in a small region of Amazonian Ecuador and Colombia. It is in the same family (Lauraceae) as the common Cinnamon and has a similar aroma. It has been used locally as a spice and flavoring agent since pre-European times.

These essences are known by the Amazon people for their stimulating qualities. They are used in their rituals to heal the inner organs.

In addition the ritual adds mineral salts, lemon grass and essential oils.

The body is exfoliated with the guayusa and ishpingo leaves while in the tub.

The massage therapist awaits you for an immersion in the sacred plant oils … guayusa and ishpingo.

Cotacachi Spa

Ishpingo oil is an anti oxidant with antibacterial and antifungal activity.

The oils from these plants blend in the hot water to create a buttery, waxy feel…the aroma being akin to exotic cinnamon and spearmint … a delight that prepares and transports you into the deep forest feel.

Cotacachi Spa

The oils create a stimulation … dream like quality, while they cleanse the body and skin.

Since the root of Ecuador indigenous language Quechua is Sanskrit, I was not surprised when our friend Blaine Watson recently sent this note in his daily email about Indian healing techniques with a warning don’t cook the honey.  You can melt honey in warm water but don’t cook it”.

Blaine wrote: Cinnamon and Honey
Honey is the only food on the planet that will not spoil or rot. It will do what some call turning to sugar. In reality honey is always honey. However, when left in a cool dark place for a long time it will do what I rather call “crystallizing”.   When this happens I loosen the lid, boil some water, and sit the honey container in the hot water, turn off the heat and let it liquefy. It is then as good as it ever was. Never boil honey or put it in a microwave. To do so will kill the enzymes in the honey.

Cinnamon and Honey

Bet the drug companies won’t like this one getting around.  Facts on Honey and Cinnamon:  It is found that a mixture of honey and Cinnamon cures most diseases. Honey is produced in most of the countries of the world. Scientists of today also accept honey as a ‘Ram Ban’ (very effective) medicine for all kinds of diseases.  Honey can be used without any side effects for any kind of diseases.

Today’s science says that even though honey is sweet, if taken in the right dosage as a medicine, it does not harm diabetic patients.   Weekly World News, a magazine in Canada , in its issue dated 17 January,1995 has given the following list of diseases that can be cured by honey and cinnamon as researched by western scientists:

HEART DISEASES:

Make a paste of honey and cinnamon powder, apply on bread, instead of jelly and jam, and eat it regularly for breakfast. It reduces the cholesterol in the arteries and saves the patient from heart attack.  Also, those who have already had an attack, if they do this process daily, they are kept miles away from the next attack. Regular use of the above process relieves loss of breath and strengthens the heart beat.  In America and Canada , various nursing homes have treated patients successfully and have found that as you age, the arteries and veins lose their flexibility and get clogged; honey and cinnamon revitalize the arteries and veins.

ARTHRITIS:

Arthritis patients may take daily, morning and night, one cup of hot water with two spoons of honey and one small teaspoon of cinnamon powder. If taken regularly even chronic arthritis can be cured. In a recent research conducted at the Copenhagen University, it was found that when the doctors treated their patients with a mixture of one tablespoon Honey and half teaspoon Cinnamon powder before breakfast, they found that within a week, out of the 200 people so treated, practically 73 patients were totally relieved of pain, and within a month, mostly all the patients who could not walk or move around because of arthritis started walking without pain.

BLADDER INFECTIONS:

Take two tablespoons of cinnamon powder and one teaspoon of honey in a glass of lukewarm water and drink it. It destroys the germs in the bladder.

CHOLESTEROL:

Two tablespoons of honey and three teaspoons of Cinnamon Powder mixed in 16 ounces of tea water, given to a cholesterol patient, was found to reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood by 10 percent within two hours.   As mentioned for arthritic patients, if taken three times a day, any chronic cholesterol is cured. According to information received in the said Journal, pure honey taken with food daily relieves complaints of cholesterol.

COLDS:

Those suffering from common or severe colds should take one tablespoon lukewarm honey with 1/4 spoon cinnamon powder daily for three days. This process will cure most chronic cough, cold, and clear the sinuses.

UPSET STOMACH:

Honey taken with cinnamon powder cures stomach ache and also clears stomach ulcers from the root.

GAS:

According to the studies done in India and Japan , it is revealed that if Honey is taken with cinnamon powder the stomach is relieved of gas.

IMMUNE SY STEM:

Daily use of honey and cinnamon powder strengthens the immune system and protects the body from bacteria and viral attacks. Scientists have found that honey has various vitamins and iron in large amounts. Constant use of Honey strengthens the white blood corpuscles to fight bacterial and viral diseases.

INDIGESTION:

Cinnamon powder sprinkled on two tablespoons of honey taken before food relieves acidity and digests the heaviest of meals.

INFLUENZA:

A scientist in Spain has proved that honey contains a natural ‘ Ingredient’ which kills the influenza germs and saves the patient from flu.

LONGEVITY:

Tea made with honey and cinnamon powder, when taken regularly, arrests the ravages of old age. Take four spoons of honey, one spoon of cinnamon powder, and three cups of water and boil to make like tea. Drink 1/4 cup, three to four times a day. It keeps the skin fresh and soft and arrests old age. Life spans also increase and even a 100 year old, starts performing the chores of a 20-year-old.

PIMPLES:

Three tablespoons of honey and one teaspoon of cinnamon powder paste. Apply this paste on the pimples before sleeping and wash it next morning with warm water. If done daily for two weeks, it removes pimples from the root.

SKIN INFECTIONS:

Applying honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts on the affected parts cures eczema, ringworm and all types of skin infections.

WEIGHT LOSS:

Daily in the morning one half hour before breakfast on an empty stomach, and at night before sleeping, drink honey and cinnamon powder boiled in one cup of water. If taken regularly, it reduces the weight of even the most obese person. Also, drinking this mixture regularly does not allow the fat to accumulate in the body even though the person may eat a high calorie diet.

CANCER:

Recent research in Japan and Australia has revealed that advanced cancer of the stomach and bones have been cured successfully. Patients suffering from these kinds of cancer should daily take one tablespoon of honey with one teaspoon of cinnamon powder for one month three times a day.

FATIGUE:

Recent studies have shown that the sugar content of honey is more helpful rather than being detrimental to the strength of the body. Senior citizens, who take honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts, are more alert and flexible. Dr. Milton, who has done research, says that a half tablespoon of honey taken in a glass of water and sprinkled with cinnamon powder, taken daily after brushing and in the afternoon at about 3:00 P.M. when the vitality of the body starts to decrease, increases the vitality of the body within a week.

BAD BREATH:

People of South America , first thing in the morning, gargle with one teaspoon of honey and cinnamon powder mixed in hot water, so their breath stays fresh throughout the day.

HEARING LOSS:

Daily morning and night honey and cinnamon powder, taken in equal parts restores hearing. Remember when we were kids? We had toast with real butter and cinnamon sprinkled on it!

Blaine is conducting our December 2009 Beyond Logic course that works on the realization that at every moment in our lives there are possibilities that our fores in play logic just cannot see.  Blaine teaches how Vedic Astrology helps tap into a bigger picture.

The inability to measure the results of astrology used to bother me enormously until years ago I read an article about Aristotle Onassis, the ultra rich Greek shipping magnate. He gave the secret of being a billionaire that helped me look beyond my logic. “Certainly one does not need an astrologist to become a millionaire.” Then he quickly added that “to become a billionaire, it is essential.”

Onassis’ statement really struck a chord with me as my many years of residence in Hong Kong had exposed me to many businessmen who looked beyond logic. I heeded the astrological advice because the Chinese businessmen are often considered superstitious due to their belief in astrology. Some might consider their sight beyond logic, offbeat and unreal, but there were more billionaires per capita in Hong Kong than anywhere else in the world!

The more I thought about this, the more it made sense. To make billions one has to take enormous risks and see a big picture far into an invisible future.

We all have to make some decisions based on events we cannot totally predict, but successful billionaires make huge decisions based on enormous unknowns. It requires incredible faith to take incredible risks. None of us can see the whole picture but Astrology, albeit vaguely, helps us see the biggest picture of all.

During touch economic times seeing beyond logic helps us survive and prosper even more.  Previous history is of little use when none of the normal financial rules seem to apply.   Deeper, more subtle ways of processing information become even more important.

Because of the recession, we added a three day ‘Beyond Logic” Course conducted in Cotacachi last February. This course was filled and so popular we added it again in December.

The first two days will be conducted by Blaine.  Here he is conducting a course at our home in North Carolina. He is in our teaching kitchen because nutrition is part of the course.

Blaine’s portion of the program includes a personal reading (one per single or couple – a second reading is extra) based on your time, day and place of birth. We’ll get your birth time in advance so he can bring your chart with him. You’ll have your reading either after the course or later by phone.

Here is the course schedule.

Day One. Monday…Feb. 9, 2009 – Blaine Watson

Introduction to the 27 constellations that form the 12 signs of the zodiac including a brief overview of the 12 signs – the 9 planets and their significations.

The 12 houses, how they come into being and the significations of each one.

Day Two. Tuesday…Feb. 10, 2009 – Blaine Watson

An explanation of planetary transits.

In-depth analysis of the transits of the major planets and how to predict their outcomes with the purpose to enable each course participant to return home and understand in a confident way, what influences are influencing the world and their individual lives on a day to day, month to month, year to year basis.

Day Three. Wednesday… will be a shamanic minga tour and delegates will visit this sacred valley near our village… just beyond this field.

ecuador-shaman

They’ll hike in (but can also bring those who cannot make it by truck) here…

We’ll reach this grotto where the water springs from the cave…

the color of gold.

Shaman Don Jose will conduct a purification for those who choose to have it.

as I am doing here.

During times of contraction…those who profit most are those who expand…but in the correct way. This course “Beyond Logic” can help you think better, have more energy, natural health and purity to pursue your inner vision, that sees a bigger picture of health and wealth for all.

I invite you to join Blaine Watson and the shamans of Ecuador.

The course fee includes meeting at Quito airport (day before the course)…transportation (by group bus) to Cotacachi and back to Quito. Course fee does not include air fare, accommodations, food or individual transportation.

Stay on and enjoy our Imbabura and Ecuador coastal real estate tours.

Blaine’s course will be conducted here at Cotacachi museum and…

Here is a paid advertisement for Ambato Ecuador condos & property for sale.

Ambato Ecuador condos and commercial shops… Ecuador income producing property for sale.

Ambato is one of Ecuador’s important cities but has been largely ignored by expats.  This gives readers a chance to have income producing real estate at a lower price than you’ll typically find in Quito, Cuenca or Cotacachi.

These are Ambato condos and income producing properties with this view.

San Juan de Ambato is a city of about 150,000 (half the size of Cuenca) located two hours + (depending on how fast you drive) south of Quito in the central Andean corridor.

The city is cut by the Ambato River and surrounded by tall mountains. This is the capital of the province of Tungurahua and is at an elevation of 7,500 feet (about the same as Cotacachi).  It is called the “City of Flowers and Fruit” and “Garden of Ecuador.”

Ambato’s economy includes fruit, tanneries, food products and textiles plus is a main transportation hub, since the Pan-American Highway passes through there.

The city of Ambato was founded in the late 1600s and declared independence from Spain in the early 1800s.  Ambato was the seat of the first printing press in Ecuador; this was originally installed in 1670 by Jesuit missionaries to print copies of the Bible.

Construction here is very solid due to a massive earthquake many years ago. It is described as one of the most earthquake-resistant places on earth.

Ambato is a modern city because all old buildings were destroyed by the earthquake.

Ambato enjoys a mostly warm and sunny climate. The average temperature during most of the year stays between 60 to 70 degrees F.

I have four buildings for sale in Ambato for investors who would like to have rental income in Ecuador.

All the buildings are on or about 10 minutes from the main Centro De La Ciudad.  They are all near public transportation.  Herfrei 1 is on the corner of a busy “cinco esquinas” five corners of Pinllo.  The main intersection of the comings and going to and from the city.
