When it comes to healthy living, there is so much data that often conflicts. The way I sort through this is to cross reference. The search is natural health dots to connect. I observe many heath disciplines looking for common threads that reveal glimpses of truth.
Recently two important dots were connected. The first dot was a test that an Ecuadorian yatchak continually gave Merri and me when we lived and worked with him. One discipline he gave us was to walk each morning in pure Andean mists. He explained that the hydrogen molecules in the mists attached to free radicals in our skin and cleansed us from the outside in. The clean mists are an anti-oxidant.
I learned that the fastest way to get anything into our bodies is through the lungs. The skin is our largest organ of elimination and is vital for cleansing.
Chiropractor and ayurvedic physician John Douillard has been one of the great natural health influences in Merri’s and my life.

Reducing overall stress may play a significant role in improving the health and condition of the skin.
Perhaps the most documented mechanism of stress on the health of the skin is free radical damage. While the sun may be the biggest source of free radical skin damage, research has shown that emotional stress can also muster up significant free radicals and damage the skin.
Researchers have found that when antioxidants are combined together, they have a synergistic effect yielding skin-protective benefits that are better than when individual compounds are taken alone.
In a double-blind randomized, placebo-controlled study, a combination of two common Ayurvedic herbs, Amalaki (Phyllanthus emblica) and Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera, also spelled Ashwaganda), were administered and the effects were measured.

Connecting these dots reminded me of the importance of using rejuvenation rose oil instead of deodorant.

The third dot is a study on essential oil anti-oxidant activity in the website of the National Institutes of Health US National Library of Medicine says (bolds are mine):
Thirteen essential oils were examined for their antioxidant activity using three different assay systems. Jasmine, parsley seed, rose, and ylang-ylang oils inhibited hexanal oxidation by over 95% after 40 days at a level of 500 microg/mL in the aldehyde/carboxylic acid assay. Scavenging abilities of the oils for the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical ranged from 39% for angelica seed oil to 90% for jasmine oil at a level of 200 microg/mL. The greatest inhibitory activity toward malonaldehyde (MA) formation from squalene upon UV-irradiation was obtained from parsley seed oil (inhibitory effect, 67%), followed by rose oil (46%), and celery seed oil (23%) at the level of 500 microg/mL. The main compounds of oils showing high antioxidant activity were limonene (composition, 74.6%) in celery seed, benzyl acetate (22.9%) in jasmine, alpha-pinene (33.7%) in juniper berry, myristicin (44%) in parsley seed, patchouli alcohol (28.8%) in patchouli, citronellol (34.2%) in rose, and germacrene (19.1%) in ylang-ylang.

Merri and I take care in what we eat, drink and especially breathe and put on our skin. The fastest way for any element good or bad to get into the blood stream is via the lungs and the skin.
This is why I smile at our seminars… when delegates ask about my great cologne… telling me how much they like it, even though… I have not used cologne for something like 40 years.
The delegates are picking up the aroma of essential oils I use every day. I use these oils for two important purification reasons.
First, essential oils help balance the system and eliminate impurities.
Second, essential oils eliminate daily applications of numerous toxins that most Westerners are bombarded with.
Since it is difficult for most of us to avoid numerous daily poisons, this message looks at a longevity alternative and begins by showing how and why, FDA regulations can actually make it harder for us to understand what should go on our skin and what should not.
This problem of trust in the government is growing in more sectors than just American health care, but the reality has expanded that health protection provided by the government is not always in the public’s best interest…. but protects big business instead.
Good health care is only available to an increasingly smaller portion of top earners and often really dangerous practices are condoned by health authorities or at the least ignored.
To overcome this problem Merri and I take many steps to improve how we feel each day and hopefully enhance our activity and longevity.
One regular practice on our part is to use essential oils instead of deodorants.
There is a disturbing article about the FDA and deodorants at impact.com entitled “Deodorants, Antiperspirants and Your Health.” This article says: The goal of this article is to provide an overview of the health risks that come with the regular use of most deodorants and all antiperspirants.
If you use deodorants or antiperspirants I recommend you read the entire article (linked below). Here are few key points from it: Sweat has no odor, the familiar unpleasant odor is caused by bacteria that live on our skin and hair. These bacteria metabolize the proteins and fatty acids from our apocrine sweat, causing body odor.
Deodorants deal with the smell by neutralizing it and by killing the bacteria that metabolize the proteins and fatty acids.
Antiperspirants on the other hand, try to prevent sweating by blocking the pores using aluminum. Without sweat, the bacteria cannot metabolize proteins and fatty acids that cause body odor.
Antiperspirants – The Over-The-Counter Drug
It might be a surprise to learn that the antiperspirant you use daily is in fact an over-the-counter (OTC) drug. As mentioned, Antiperspirants work by clogging, closing, or blocking the pores with aluminum salts in order to prevent the release of sweat, effectively changing the function of the body. Antiperspirants are considered to be drugs because they affect the physiology of the body.
Because antiperspirants are drugs, they are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Consequently, every antiperspirant sold in the US has a Drug Identification Number (DIN), which you can find on the label. A document called ‘monograph’ states requirements for categories of nonprescription drugs such as antiperspirants. It defines for example what ingredients may be used and for what intended use. If the standards of the OTC monograph are met, premarket approval of a potentially new OTC product is not necessary.
Antiperspirants contain many ingredients. However, part II and III of this series will focus on the active ingredient for antiperspirants: Aluminum. Most antiperspirants also contain paraben, an ingredient that is also used in deodorants.
As mentioned, deodorants deal with body odor by neutralizing the smell and by killing the bacteria that metabolize the proteins and fatty acids that occur in sweat.
In the last decade one particular ingredient in deodorants has become controversial: Paraben, a widely used preservative. Part IV will focus on paraben and its health effects.
Deodorants and Antiperspirants are Considered to be Safe
Both antiperspirants and deodorants are considered to be safe by the FDA, the American Cancer Society, the National Cancer Institute and the Mayo Clinic.
However, as you will learn in this series, FDA regulation does not mean that a drug is without danger. Like prescription drugs, the FDA oversees OTC drugs to ensure that they are properly labeled and that their benefits outweigh their risks.
There are many products or ingredients of products that have become controversial in regards to health effects. However, this does not mean that products will be taken off the market until deemed safe. Often, the FDA does not consider the evidence of danger to consumer’s health strong enough to take action.
The FDA will be the main subject of a future article, but if you want to research some of the bad decisions the FDA has made in the past, then Google some examples of product that only got pulled off the shelves when it became too obvious that people were dying due to heart attacks caused by these medications: ‘Vioxx’, ‘Celebrex’ and ‘Bextra’. The conclusion of this debacle according to leading cardiologist Dr. Eric Topol:
Neither of the two major forces in this 5-and-a-half-year affair — neither Merck nor the FDA — fulfilled its responsibilities to the public.
This is also why I have not used deodorants or cologne for decades and use essential oils instead!

99% of Breast Cancer Tissue Contained This Everyday Chemical (NOT Aluminum)
Recent research found higher concentrations of parabens in the upper quadrants of the breast and axillary area, where antiperspirants are usually applied, suggesting they may contribute to the development of breast cancer. One or more paraben esters were detected in 99 percent of the tissue samples collected from mastectomies. In 60 percent of the samples, all five paraben esters were present.
Overall, topical application of personal care products containing parabens appear to be the greatest source of exposure to these estrogen-mimicking chemicals, far surpassing the risk of the aluminum in antiperspirants.
Aluminum chloride—the active ingredient in antiperspirants—has been found to act similarly to the way oncogenes work to provide molecular transformations in cancer cells. Like parabens, aluminum salts also mimic estrogen, and bioaccumulate in breast tissue, which can raise your breast cancer risk.
Despite the fact that parabens are used in such a wide variety of products, their safety is primarily based on a rat study from 1956, as modern toxicology studies are lacking, and not a single study on the chemicals’ carcinogenity follow acceptable regulatory standard carcinogenity study protocols, according to a recent review.
New research examining parabens found in cancerous human breast tissue points the finger at antiperspirants and other cosmetics for increasing your risk of breast cancer.
The research, which is also reviewed in an editorial published in the Journal of Applied Toxicology, looked at where breast tumors were appearing, and determined that higher concentrations of parabens were found in the upper quadrants of the breast and axillary area, where antiperspirants are usually appliedii.
Parabens are chemicals that serve as preservatives in antiperspirants and many cosmetics, as well as sun lotions. Previous studies have shown that all parabens have estrogenic activity in human breast cancer cells.
Another component of antiperspirants, aluminum chloride, has been found to act similarly to the way oncogenes work to provide molecular transformations in cancer cells. According to the authors of the editorial review, the research shows “signals of concern that such compounds are not as safe as previously generally considered, and further research is warranted.” Furthermore:
“The data from this latest study, the most extensive examination of parabens in human breast so far published, confirms previous work and raises a number of questions on the entire parabens, personal care product and human health debate, particularly relating to the source and toxicological significance of the paraben esters.”

Many Deodorants Contain Endocrine Disruptors
Another website lymphomainfo.net has an article entitled “Just Say “No” to Endocrine Disruptors” Here is an excerpt: The list is extensive and growing – bisphenol A, phthalates, parabens, PBDE’s (flame retardants), PCB’s, dioxins, atrazine, heptachlor, arsenic, mercury, lead among them. Referred to as “endocrine disruptors“(ED’s), a term describing their documented ability to mimic natural hormones and disrupt normal endocrine system functioning, this term certainly understates the myriad of ways in which these synthetic chemicals compromise our health.
Many of these compounds are lipophilic (stored in fat cells). Because women naturally have more fat cells than men, our bodies store more of these cancer-promoting chemicals than do men’s bodies. These chemicals can then be transferred across the placenta to a growing fetus.
This article (linked below) provides a list of individual steps you can take to reduce your and your family’s exposure to and bodily absorption of ED’s.
One of the steps is: Avoid products with added “fragrance” both in your home and on your body. A truly clean (and safe) home is a home without artificial scents. As a non-ED alternative to scented deodorants, try using a deodorant salt (the only safe deodorant during chemotherapy), complemented with a dab of your favorite essential oil just under your arms.
Lymph nodes are the most important part of the immune system and though they are spread throughout the body, there is concentration. Mostly they are concentrated in the neck, under the arms, and in the groins.
So I do not put chemicals (Deodorants or Antiperspirants) under my arms in this important and sensitive lymph area… ever.
“These parts of the body are so important to health that my friend Jay Glaser M.D. even suggests avoiding regular soap for cleaning these areas. In his book “Body Renewal – The Lost Art of Self Repair” Jay writes: Use gentle glycerin soap only in the groin and underarms. Otherwise use mung bean flour, barley flour or chickpea flour instead of soap, available in Indian groceries (mung bean flour is usually best, but you can try them all). Keep your flour in a dry container near the shower, moisten it in your fingertips and gently apply it to the areas to be cleansed.”

Jay’s advice makes sense. A medicalnewstoday.com article recently showed how there may even be a link between deodorants and breast cancer. The article begins: A new study led by the University of Reading in the UK that examined breast tissue samples from 40 women who underwent mastectomies for breast cancer, found they contained widespread traces of parabens, preservatives commonly used in deodorants, make-up, body lotions, moisturisers and many other cosmetic products. Although the study does not prove that parabens cause or even contribute to the development of breast cancer, it raises questions about their use.
Parabens are just one of the chemicals of concern in deodorants. According to the Dr. Milker website’s list of toxins, the following can be found in Antiperspirants and deodorants:
* Aluminum: Central nervous system damage and linked to Alzheimers. Found in antiperspirant deodorants.
* Coumarin: Formerly the active ingredient in rat poison. A carcinogenic ingredient used in the manufacturing of deodorants.
* Formaldehyde: Suspected carcinogen and neurotoxin, it may be fatal if swallowed, absorbed through skin, inhaled or swallowed.
* Fragrances (Synthetic): Some perfumes / fragrances contain hundreds of chemicals. Some, such as methylene chloride are carcinogenic. Some cause brain damage or are neurotoxins. Avoid unless you can be sure they are not carcinogenic.
* Phthalates: Proven damage to liver, lungs, kidneys and reproductive system, especially forming testes.
* Propylene Glycol: Kidney damage, liver abnormalities, inhibits skin cell growth, damages cell membranes causing rashes, surface damage and dry skin.
* Propylparaben: Potential breast cancer risk and endocrine disruptor raising concern for impaired fertility or development, and increased risk for certain cancers, itching burning and blistering of skin, gastrointestinal or liver toxicity hazard.
This is why I use essential oils under my arms to eliminate poison instead of adding toxins.
For many years, with the advice of our friend Candace Newman, I have blended my own deodorant… getting the essential oils and organic jojoba oil from Candace and mixing them.

How do I use essential oils?
Essential oils enter the body primarily in three ways—applied to the skin, inhaled, or ingested. Within each of these, there are many different kinds of application methods. For example, you can apply essential oils topically using compresses, sprays, baths, or massaging them into the skin.
Factors That Increase Skin Absorption
Different factors can affect the absorption of essential oils through the skin. If you massage the area first, it will increase circulation to that area, thereby causing an increase in absorption of essential oils. Heat will likewise increase circulation and thus enhance absorption.

Are Essential Oils Safe?
Most essential oils are safe and free of adverse side effects when used properly. However, as with any substance you are introducing into your body, it is important to use them intelligently. We recommend that you never eat or drink essential oils.
Can essential oils be toxic?
Toxicity rarely occurs with appropriate use of essential oils and is primarily attributed to misuse and accidental ingestion, especially in young children. Essential Oil Safety by Tisserand and Balacs, 1995, is a valuable reference to understanding potential toxicity and lethal dosages. Again, we recommend that you never eat or drink essential oils.
The Nature of Plants and Tiny Molecules
Essential oil chemistry is made up of very tiny molecules. These molecules are much smaller than the molecules found in fatty oils.
The tiny size is the key that unlocks good health because they easily penetrate cell walls, even the blood-brain barrier. This allows the essential oil molecules to reach parts of the body like nothing else in a really fast and positive way.
These tiny molecules work through the skin and reach most parts of the body almost instantly.
This allows essential oils to permeate your body with the plant’s healing energy.
Plant’s Healing Energy
Plants have an intelligence that allows them to grow and survive. Essential oils are a concentration of this knowledge.
Plants have to beat back mold and fungi and overcome bacteria and viruses. That concentrated ability is carried into our bodies through essential oils.

ORAC stands for “Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity”. This is a scientific measurement that measures the antioxidant capacity of a food item and or oil. USDA researchers at Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts, developed this laboratory test to measure the oxygen radical absorption capacity of different foods and natural substances. This is known as the ORAC scale and is one of the most sensitive and reliable methods for measuring antioxidant capacity.
This scale helped the health care community learn about valuable antioxidant foods like Pomegranates that have an ORAC value 3,037 and Blueberries with an ORAC of 2,400.
Fewer know about the anti oxidant ORAC scale of essential oils.
Rose essential oil for example has an ORAC value of 160,400!
This is more than 50 times the ORAC value of pomegranates!

Here are the concentrated properties of each essential oil in Candace’s rejuvenation Rose Oil Blend.
