Overseas Earnings Idea

First, here is a multi dimensional investing and business idea.  Buy Ecuador Haciendas, farms and rancheros and improve them.

rosaspamba

Ecuador Hacienda Rosaspamba we bought to fix up.

A New York Times article shows how entitled “Restoring Ranch Land for a Profit, and a ‘Trout Dividend’ by Sarah Max shows why this is a growing trend. Here is an excerpt:  Jay Ellis, founder of the private equity firm Sporting Ranch Capital Management uses the logic that sporting ranches near desirable destinations are a rare commodity in association with T. Boone Pickens, the billionaire oilman.

The idea is to buy and sell ranches and improved them every time.  Preservation is becoming a great way to use the land,”  Pickens says “the timing for such a fund was right, thanks to a recovering economy and a natural gas boom that is bankrolling new buyers.”

The first fund raised $30 million among a dozen limited partners and is now fully invested with five properties in Colorado, Idaho, New Mexico and Utah.  Mr. Ellis is planning to put all five ranches on the market in 2014 and is confident that these “pristine trophy properties” will sell quickly. Mr. Ellis is now raising a second fund, for $50 million.

“This is an asset everyone wants, but either the price is ridiculous or the property needs too much work,” Mr. Ellis said, adding that his focus is on improving the fishing habitat to lure private buyers willing to pay a premium. “Buyers typically don’t have the time or patience to do the work themselves.”

As the number of wealthy expats moving to Ecuador grows this idea will increase in potential.

Turn your passion into profit.  We all can gain from putting our fulfillment and service ahead of the cash.   Bold lifestyles of adventure and satisfaction that create income are in our personal as well as social best interests.

This series is looking at the great cost of an error in the outdated socio-economic mindset that is based around a trimodal concept of learning… earning… retiring.  This progression is flawed in numerous ways… and outdated from times when physical strength was required to contribute to society.   This error is pushing the global financial system into bankruptcy and ruin.   High costs of pensions and social security do not work in an the global economies aging demographic model.

Take for example last week’s New York Times article (linked below)  “A City Borrows So Its Schools Open on Time”.  Here is an excerpt: PHILADELPHIA — Just a month after Detroit became the largest American city to file for bankruptcy, and with major cities like Chicago and Los Angeles struggling, this former manufacturing behemoth is also edging toward a financial precipice.

For a number of years, Mayor Michael A. Nutter and the City Council have been working, with some success and a fair amount of taxpayer pain, to shore up the city’s finances, which have been troubled by mounting debt, a shrinking tax base and unfunded pension and health care obligations to retirees. But the school district, supported by the same weary municipal taxpayers, though under the control of a state reform commission for more than a decade, had been largely ignored.

In this instance of Philadelphia… the retiring is screwing up the learning.  The actuarial lunacy of excessive pensions can be seen creating a triple negative whammy.  First, the city’s pension is underfunded so pensioners are not likely to get what they expect.  Second, the city’s need to appear to fund those pensions will create higher taxes that instead of attracting business and revenues will drive them away.   Third,  the population who remain will be poorly educated (due to the fiscal crunch) and less likely to be productive.

This learn… earn…. retire mindset creates a really terrible negative downward spiral.  The real irony is that the retirement promised would not bring the retirees the fulfillment they expected.  The supposed golden years are more often the tarnished and rusty years.   Retirement suggests not having to plan, work. serve and grow. This sounds like a rut.  Ray Kroc summarized the value of that in his book “Grinding it out The Making of McDonalds” (See link below) when he wrote:  “A rut is nothing but a grave with the ends kicked out“.

This series is looking at many ways to have fun earning… from growing ginseng to writing to shopping.  This note from kind reader Cindy Martin caught my attention.

Gary & Merri –  I just returned from a 5-week stay in Ecuador.  I was in the Galapagos for three weeks and it was an amazing trip.  I then stayed around Quito for the remaining 2 weeks.  Per your advice, I did a tour with Roberto Ribadeneira.  I had a 2-day shopping/exporting tour.  He is simply amazing.  This is my second time in Quito/Otavalo/Cotacochi.

The difference going on the tour with Roberto and shopping by myself was night and day.  He knows where to go, what to see and is amazing dealing with the artesians.  He is knowledgeable and so willing to share his experiences.  His exporting services are great!  I will definitely be using his services in the future.  I just wanted to thank you for recommending Roberto.  He made my trip much more enjoyable and I learned so much.  What I learned from him more than paid for the cost of the tour.  Not only that, I feel like I have gained a very good friend and for that I am very grateful!!  Thanks again for all you both do.   Cindy

Thank you, Cindy, for letting us know.   With such an endorsement, I asked Roberto, who is the leader of the Ateam Ecuador in Quito to share with us details about that tour. Here is his report.

Shoppers Adventure and Savings Tour

By Roberto Ribadeneira

We have many people signing for our tours. One thing that helps is that the tours are private, which means that we customize our itinerary to make it work for our clients.

Cindy was one of the first people that signed for the tour, she was at the Galapagos Islands and thought it would be a great idea to do business in Ecuador and take some products to the USA.

The adventure began once Cindy signed for the tour and we coordinated how many days and what specifics she wanted.

I picked up Cindy at her hotel in Quito. We drove to the valley and then took a route that goes from outside the city to Calderon, which is north of the city. This same route will be open to access the new airport sometime in 2014.

The nice thing about traveling from Quito to Cotacachi is that you can see the mountains, lakes and enjoy the view. We got to talk and define what was her plan for her business. While traveling I can give some advice, talk about our exporting experience and also about what you need to get your business going.

ecuador shopping

Lago San Pablo – Ecuador

It is nice because while we enjoy some informal conversation we can also know what is the business perspective and what our client is looking to get. So this maximizes the time that we have in Otavalo and Cotacachi for our shopping and uses the time on the road to get some basic information.

After less than two hours we checked in at Land of the Sun Hotel in Cotacachi. We priced the tour to include the hotel, meals and breakfast so you don’t have to worry about a single thing when you tour with us.

Land of the Sun Hotel

We headed to Otavalo to the Poncho Market to look for Alpaca products. There is this really nice old man who has this place and sells many Alpaca items, Cindy already talked to him before and knew some of the prices. Gladly we were able to get him to give us a little more discounts and also to have some products ready for us the next day.

Having someone around is good when unexpected things happen. We couldn’t get money our of the ATM machines so we had to go from one bank to another, until finally we were able to get some money out. Otherwise how we were going to pay for the products? So I asked at one bank, then at another bank, talked to the security guard until they finally recommended a place that always works.

Keep in mind that people don’t take checks or credits cards.  The place is cash only as most of them are informal and don’t have bank accounts. That is also why it is handy to have the tour paid in full, so all the cash that you need will go to the products that you want to buy, not the hotel or the food or transportation.

ecuador shopping

Poncho Market at Otavalo

We went back from Otavalo to Cotacachi, having reserved the products that Cindy needed. We had a great meal at the hotel, took a short break and went back to work.

I explained to Cindy about having products shipped from Ecuador, the common mistakes that we all have made when calculating the cost and also how to set up a website while not spending too much money.

There are things that we need to know when setting up an online business, the main one is to realize that it takes time to bring traffic and also to set it up. While you do that I always recommend getting your business going as sales should not be based solely on what the internet traffic can bring, until you get to that point it is always wise to build your sales through regular sales while traffic grows to your website.

We went over having a shopping cart, having a merchant and processor accounts and charging customers for the products. All this will add to the expenses but are fundamental in the electronic age when people prefer to pay with credit cards, but you have to make sure that you provide a secure website with a PCI compliance platform to reduce the risk of online fraud.

By the end of the day our shopping was done. We knew how to deal with the ATM withdraw, as for most of the ATM machines the daily cap is USD $500. We also checked with a supplier for some purses and had the Alpaca products reserved. We also talked about some ideas for selling the products and tips of getting more customers to buy.

The day was over, we met with some friends who were at the hotel to have a nice dinner conversation about economics and the future of Ecuador, while sharing other business ideas that may work in the future.

On the next day we had pretty much everything ready to make it really smooth. Cindy knew that she had enough money to buy everything since we already figured out how to deal with the ATM machines. We went to the bank and then headed to Otavalo. We picked the best products available, made a list and loaded everything into the car. I told Cindy that is was really important to get the freight right, that could make or break the profit, so I took a scale to weigh every single product and made sure that we can calculate the price correctly.

Weighing the Products at the Market

With all the products in, I made an inventory, detailed the pricing and weight and we were ready to head back to Cotacachi.

We had lunch and reviewed more business ideas and information. Since things went so well we even have time to go to Cuicocha, a beautiful lake 15 minutes from Cotacachi. The view is mesmerizing with the lake in the middle of the mountains.

Back at the hotel for the last day before we returned to Quito, Cindy had a great idea, how about a nice last treat before she goes back to the USA? Turns out that the hotel offers an incredible massage given by a lady who has over 15 years of experience. In Cindy’s words, “one of the best massages that she has ever had.”
It was so good that we are going to include in our future tours the massages as part of the deal.

We reviewed the last remaining things to do and we were ready to get things packed and head back to Quito. I had an order to pick up in Otavalo so after that last stop we were ready to call it for the day.

Cuicocha Lake

While traveling back we have more time to talk and go over some other ideas, and also to get to know each other. I took a route to her hotel surrounding the city, turns out that the traffic was incredible bad. It took as about an hour and a half to get to Quito, but about one hour to enter the city from that route. Well, we made most out of it sharing some fun stories.

A very famous soccer player died that week and the government planned this huge funeral service at Ruminaui Coliseum. Of course touring and working I didn’t read the papers those days, so I didn’t know that almost every road was going to be closed due to that.

ecuador shopping

Traffic jam at Quito (on a Friday Night)

We took the products out of the car and I gave some traveling tips to Cindy, since the new airport is an hour from the city’s downtown, it is always wise to make preparations so you don’t miss your flight, and always ask the front desk at the hotel to call a taxi the day before, just to be sure.

We all learned something new and the more we toured, the more experience that we get, so every time that I go on a tour I am very happy that I always get to experience new things. Also when something goes wrong or we have problems that we have to solve, that helps the next time that we have to deal with a similar issue.
If you are looking for a personalized tour, which includes business ideas, deals in hotels and restaurants (an all included service) and our help getting the products that you need, we have the best service out there, plus I really like doing this, so hopefully you will have lots of fun with me!  Thanks to Cindy’s recommendations we are including in our tour a complementary massage, so you can relax after a long day of work with me.

Please call or email so we can give you the Best Deal in the market. 1-888-482-3850 or email to roberto_ribadeneira@me.com

Seven P Secrets of Self Publishing

When you write, you can work anywhere.

gary-scott-image

Here I am working poolside in the winter, at our Florida farm.

gary scott

Here I am with our hound Ma, working during the summer at our North Carolina farm.

Learn how to earn everywhere, while living anywhere you choose.  I have been able to earn by writing in Hong Kong, England, the Isle of Man, Dominican Republic and Ecuador to name a few of the place I have lived.  Everywhere I have been… too numerous to share here, I have been able to work.

All I need is my laptop.

That’s all you need too… a laptop to be free!

Before computers, a pencil and pad did the job.

Freedom is just one benefit you can gain from writing.

Another benefit is income.   Writing has brought me both our farms, free and clear… plus a lot more.

Another good example of earning potential is my friend Hugh Howey.   He was working for $10 an hour in a book store when he self published his novel Wool, typing in a storage room during his lunch breaks.

Soon he was earning over $100,000 a month on Amazon.com.  This helped secure a six-figure book deal from Simon & Schuster, and an option for film by Ridley Scott, director of Blade Runner and Alien.

That’s what he’s doing now.

Hugh Howey

Sometimes Hugh and I get together at my  farm and play chess (he beats me badly).

Writers like High are great inspirations.

A couple of years ago Hugh  left Florida, and moved to South Africa.  He had a sailing catamaran built for him and now can sail the world while he continues to write.

Hugh explained it like this: And that’s the miracle of working as a writer: I can do it from anywhere and everywhere. The past few years, I’ve done a lot of writing from airplanes and airports while on business trips abroad.  SAND was entirely written overseas while traveling through seven different countries; I think it’s a better story because of those inspirations.  In upcoming years, I may be writing near your home port.

Hugh’s a super star writer and his success could not happen to a more deserving and talented person.  He pours enormous energy into being worthy of his readership.  But you do not have to be a million dollar a year earner or a traveler to benefit from writing.

The good news is… you do not need a huge success to have a rich and fulfilled lifestyle.  Self Publishing can bring you a life that most people only dream of, as a journeyman writer, instead of a super star.

May I hastily add that the path to stardom begins as a journeyman… so the journeyman’s path brings success without stardom… but can also lead to stardom.

What most success stories like Hugh’s rarely explain is the many hours of writing that was devoted before their self published book sales soared.   Hugh, like most writers were journeymen first.  Stardom came later.

Here are sevens secrets that can help you become a journeyman writer.

The secrets are a writer’s armory of tools that allows almost anyone to create successful publications for income, freedom and fulfillment.

Take Merri’s and my publishing business as an example.

Merri and I are not writing stars.  We are journeymen who have for more than 40 years, year in and year out, earned solid income writing and self publishing dozens of publications about multiple subjects.

Some years that income has been more than solid… over a million dollars.  Yet in terms of stardom, we are hardly known.

In a moment you’ll see why that’s fine for us and probably will be for you too.

First some history.

Merri became involved in self publishing over 40 years ago… first helping a veterinarian publish a book on a very specific market… animal acupuncture. Then she showed a needle point artist how to sell more books to an even more specific audience… “needle point enthusiasts”  about her needle point work to an audience larger than the population of the city she lived in.  This led Merri to eventually become Executive Editor of an award winning magazine in Florida.

My story allowed Merri and me to work and live from Hong Kong to London to Europe to Eastern Europe, then the Caribbean and then Ecuador… making millions in the process of following our adventures… having fun… while helping a large readership adapt to a rapidly changing world.

That’s what self publishing can bring, profit, adventure and fulfillment, a great feeling of worth and wonder.

Self Publishing has created exactly the lifestyle we desire allowing us to span the world and work with meaning and purpose.

Self Publishing has become a new business art form.

The seven secrets can help you start your own self publishing business now.

Everything in publishing is new and exciting and changing.  Publishing is being recreated by the wonderful power of destructive technology.

Everything is new… except the seven secrets.

Change in the publishing industry is disturbing many.   We love this evolution due to these seven secrets we call the 7Ps.  The 7 Ps are so fundamental to writing and publishing that new technology enhances rather than reduces their power.

The First P is Passion.

Whatever your passion, you can immerse yourself in it AND create income with self publishing.  This can be your direct ticket to the kind of fulfillment you’ve always wanted.

Whether you want to travel the world or live as a recluse, work 12 hours a day or not work much at all,  you can set your schedule to succeed, if you’re willing to learn these seven secrets.

You can start part-time with any dream, passion, and budget.  Once you’ve created a product, you’ll enjoy the “multiple effect” of producing profits over and over again.

So the question is… What do you love to do?

What’s Your Passion:  An example is that thirty years ago, a client of Merri’s had a passion to help people who were in pain?  He published a series of pamphlets explaining various chiropractic disorders in very simple terms.  For example: “What Is Whiplash?”

The pamphlets contained solid information, but were simple 5″ x 7″ brochures with drawings and explanations. He sold them with a rack to chiropractors, who put them in their offices for patients to read.  These little self-published items sold year in and year out for decades.

There are thousands of ideas of this sort that can lead to big business.  It’s just a matter of defining and then acting on your passion.

Although I can work when I please and go where I wish, for me the most important reason for being a publisher is the satisfaction it brings.

I love the projects I take on, so work doesn’t feel like, well… work.

What do you love?  If you love golf, then you can write and sell publications about golf.  Love travel, fishing, dogs, dolls, or art?  Write and sell publications in these fields.

Are you concerned about crime, war, poverty or environmental issues?  You can publish information products that help reduce these concerns.

Would you like to help the world be a more spiritual place?  Publish a newsletter, write a book (or hire someone to write it for you), record a tape… publish something that enlightens people.

Whatever your passion, you can immerse yourself in it and earn income by publishing for ereaders, print on demand, CDs, lists, bound books, or any format you choose.

Be immersed in your passion and get paid well for it.

This is why stardom is not the main goal for most writers and self publishers.  Extra income, more freedom and fulfillment are usually more than enough enough.

The seven Ps are:

#1: Passion

#2: Problem

#3: Person

#4: Profitably Priced Product

#5: Prospecting Pathway

#6: Promise

#7: Presentation

The first time I exposed others to the secrets in Self Publishing was in a weekend “Writer’s Camp” seminar.  We offered the camp for $1,500. 80 delegates enrolled.  People from all walks of life attended—chiropractors, businessmen, investors, doctors, realtors, inventors, airline pilots, engineers, and housewives.

Merri and I were so overwhelmed by the response, we decided to make it available to a larger audience.  We created a written course based on our current self publishing activity called “Self Fulfilled – How to be a Self Publisher.”  Then we recorded the weekend “Writer’s Camp” seminar.

Thousands have used the course as it has evolved over the decades.

You can receive both the written course and the recorded weekend seminar, in an MP3 file, in a special “Live Well and Free Anywhere” program I am making available to you.  The normal fee is $299 for the written course and $299 for the recorded workshop.   I’ll send you both the course and the recorded workshop and my course “International Business Made EZ (also $299) all for $299.  You save $598.

We are so confident that you’ll gain from this offer that if you are not fully satisfied, simply email us within 60 days for a full refund .

These courses are not theoretical.  They describe, step-by-step, how Merri and I built a million-dollar international business and how we are running this self publishing business right now.   We use the 7Ps today just as we did four decades ago to create a strong annual income.

This correspondence course is for those who would like their own international self publishing micro business for fun and profit. If you want fun, freedom, extra income and fulfillment with your own full or part time writing or want to build your existing business, by writing to sell you can profit from this course.  The course can help who want their own business or who want to have a business together or a family business.  This is the perfect course for those who can no longer find employment, who are looking for ways to earn abroad and who wish to retire and supplement their income.

Whether you are retired, an investor, chiropractor, doctor, dentist, professional or already own your own business, this offers another way to make money, to turn your passion into profit. We guarantee that we have shared all we know to help you start and run your own international business.  Enjoy and live a life of following your Passion to Profit… through writing.

Here is a special offer.

We provide two emailed courses  “Self Fulfilled – How to Write to Sell and be a Self Publisher” and “International Business Made EZ”.

We include the “Self Fulfilled Writing and Self Publishing Course” because there are two reasons to write, when you have something to say or when you have something to sell.  In this day and age many of us want to do both, make a statement that makes the world a better place and earn something extra in the process.

Whatever your passion, however you do business, chances are you’ll be writing either to create a product or to sell a product.

You save more than $598 because you also receive a recorded webinar conducted by our webmaster David Cross (at no extra cost).

Low Cost Ecuador Expat Living – Pivotal Week – Day 5

Low cost living for expats in Ecuador has boomed over the past several years.

otavalo-cotacachi house

House for sale between Otavalo and Cotacachi.

This trend will grow.   US and Western European economies are both being forced to face up to debt, aging populations and huge unfunded future obligations in pensions, medical care and who knows what, amid a disintegrating, global social cohesion evidenced by terrorism… revolution and internal strife.

Huge losses will occur as the dollar and euro lose purchasing power.

One way to protect against these losses is by seeking a lower cost lifestyle in countries such as Ecuador.

Here is a paid advertisement for a designer house for sale between Otavalo and Cotacachi Ecuador.

When you come on to the .3 acre (1206 sq mtr or 12,000 sq ft ) site, your breath is first taken away by the grand presentation of Imbabura Mountain that rises in front of you.

Ecuador Export Expedition Savings

There is a $250 Ecuador export tour reduction for those who enroll in the September 2010 tour this July.

Bonnie Keough who conducts the Ecuador Export Expedition we write about has developed so many unique sources (that you will not find anywhere else) Ecuador  export products that she has had to expand her tours from four to five days.

The longer tour will require a higher fee so as of August 1st 2010 the Ecuador Expedition will rise from $499 to $749.

Bonnie and delegates look at many funky export ideas in these three courses.

For example when decorating our latest rental units in Cotacachi we created wall art with these Otavalo scarves.

Internet Opportunity in Authenticity

Yesterday’s message Quantum Shifts reviewed how humanity’s growing understanding of the body, mind and universal consciousness has helped Merri and me expand the effectiveness of our investing.

Merri and I are in Ecuador.  Here are delegates on our Imbabura real estate tour.  Learn more about this Ecuador house (in the $90s) and why delegates needed to see it below.

ecuador-real-estate

First remember three points made at our Quantum Wealth course last week and yesterday’s message:

#1: There are Always Things you Cannot See.  This is the nature of existence.

#2: Do Not Invest More than You Can Afford to Lose!  Because of point number one.

#3:  Look for belief in fundamental ideas.  Each of us in connected to the universe and our belief is an important part of our investing process.  There are always things we do not know… but belief has enormous power at incredibly deep levels of investing and the universe.

These facts always keep me looking for new ideas in which to believe and upgrades in the human productivity has always been one area that keeps me focused.

In an earlier article Magnificent Seven we saw how these shifts create new opportunities for investment and internet business in seven areas.

Truth & Cohesion

Truth & Cohesion

Ecuador

Smalltown USA Real Estate

I believe that there is opportunity in these seven ideas.

My belief in the profitability of investing in truth & cohesion was enhanced by an Time’s article entitled “Dead Tree Alert All the News That’s Fit to Mint”  by James Poniewozik.

Here are excerpts: My column in this week’s print TIME is about the New York Times’ plan to begin charging (some people, something) to read it on the Web starting next year. Seemingly by design, it doesn’t look like the plan would raise too much money at first. It’s more important symbolically: the country’s most authoritative (and argued-about) newspaper is more or less declaring that, if old media don’t figure out a way to get paid  online, it’s game over. What would the blogosphere do without the New York Times to kick around?

There are a few things you can count on: the sun will rise in the east, winter will turn to spring, and the New York Times will come out every day. Of the three, the disappearance of the Times might be the most shocking to a reader’s sense of a rational universe.

But that’s exactly the scenario that was implied — and, Times bosses hope, staved off — by the recent announcement that next year the paper will begin charging for online access. The Times is possibly the most authoritative paper in the world and the most influential online, with 17 million monthly readers. It’s done well in most media — except the print medium that’s green and is issued by the U.S. Mint.

The Times is in the same fix as most other old-media outlets, including this magazine. Online ads don’t bring in enough to support the massive news operation that attracts those 17 million people. Last year, the Times won five Pulitzer Prizes — and borrowed $250 million from a Mexican billionaire to keep the lights on.

No Big Media institution is indispensable: not the Times, not the evening news, not TIME magazine. People don’t owe us their money; we owe it to them to be worth paying for.  If we go, people will find other sources to trust; in some cases, they already have.

One of those is The Daily Show, which commands Times-like faith among its fans. Last year, it did a segment on the Times’s woes, in which Jason Jones mocked the paper’s dead-tree format and landline phones. “Look at me,” he laughed, picking one up. “I’m a reporter from the ’80s, makin’ sure everything’s factual.”

It was searing, but bittersweet too. The Daily Show, for all its jokes, cares deeply about facts. If the Times’s pay wall doesn’t work — if nothing works — something else will replace today’s media. Something great, I hope. But I wonder if the new media would be a little bereft without a Times to react to, rebel against and define themselves against, like a dog that finally caught the car. Or in this case, the rolled-up newspaper.

When the media that we trusted are gone, who can we trust?

Fortunes are in the correct answer to that question… both for those who provide trustworthy data and for those who invest in truth and cohesion.

This is why we have doubled our Ecuador real estate tours in 2010.  Many Americans and Canadians have lost their trust in the truth of the North American establishment.  They are looking for a smaller place to be where it might be easier to spot the truth. Ecuador is one such spot… but how can you develop trust here.

Our belief is you need to look and see for yourself from someone who has nothing to gain… hence real estate tours from someone who is not earning real estate commissions.

Our staff are cntinually looking for property to show on our tours and Bonnie Keogh sent me this note about a new project near Cotacachi Ecuador.

Hi Gary,  Don’t know if Merri got a chance to tell you about the new houses going up in Cotacachi.  They are being built by Miguel Mora who built the condos on the Pan Am in Otavalo that we’ve been taking the tours to (all sold out except one).  Very smart guy, he’s been building for 12 years in this area and his architect has about 20+ years experience.

They bought a beautiful piece of land near Hostal Paradisimo in Cotacachi and will be starting the infrastructure in February.  He is very anxious to work with us and will give delegates a discount.

He’s very aware that you will not recommend anything that you do not feel is of the highest value and quality.

He speaks perfect english, as does his architect Patricio, and is very proud of his houses.  Peg and I had a meeting with him yesterday and then he wanted to show us a project he did in Otavalo more than 8 years ago.  The houses are on the grounds of a centuries old monastery, they built the new homes to blend with the old and did an excellent job.  The grounds reminded me a La Mirage, wonderful garden like feel.  Lots of room and privacy.  The houses showed no wear and tear, no moisture problems and were very inviting and comfortable.  One feature that is great, a rooftop terrace to enjoy the views and also a rooftop tower!  Folks have been asking for this and this land has the best views ever, both Imbabura and Cotacachi.

They are very open to modifying designs to accommodate folks wishes, bigger, smaller ,etc.

Building costs will be about $65-$70 sq. ft. with land, depending on lot size.  There will city water, private water for irrigation, private sewer, a swimming pool and hot tub for the community.  Also, full time caretaker and gardener.

His standard fixtures are very good, but upgrades are available at slightly higher costs.  They also take into consideration the seismic activity of the area and build their houses accordingly.

No building is earthquake proof, but their buildings will withstand limited movement and in the event of a major quake, will give their occupants plenty of time to get out.

I think this development is a winner and will sell out quickly.  It will have an incredible view, high quality construction, great facilities and beautiful gardens.  Bonnie.

These are the types of properties we look for so we can help you gain trust in Ecuador.

Dead Tree Alert All the News That’s Fit to Mint

Ecuador Health Food

Ecuador’s food is health food… compared to food in the US… even Ecuador’s fast food is pretty good.

Many mistakenly think that Ecuador food is something like Mexican food. Nothing could be further from the truth. I have never seen a taco or antijito in Ecuador, although they are available in the big cities in chains.

Ecuadorian food is European if anything but blended nicely with Andean traditions… so it comes out darn healthy.

While in Cotacachi last week we visited with many friends and readers who have moved to Ecuador and heard a similar refrain… “I lost 22 pounds without even trying”. One delegate who has moved to Cotacachi about six months ago reported losing 38 pounds.

We visited our well known international friends, Dan Presher and Suzan Haskins, at their new Cotacachi condo.

ecuador-food

They were both looking so good, I asked their secret.  “We just lost weight without trying” was their reply.

Plus many report that shedding stress helps as well…. along with walking in the fresh mountain air.

Ecuador food is fresh.  On Ecuador’s coast, you can get seafood right from the fishing boats when they come in, like these fresh food shoppers at San Clemente .

Boats like this one just outside the hotel where we have our condos are dotted along the coast.

fishing-boat-1

The fishermen handle the boats through the surf.

Ecuador-fishermen-3

Then they head out to sea!

Merri and I meet the fishermen when they return with shrimp and fish and some langostinos.  The shrimp are large enough that two provided a meal!

Ecuador-shrimp 4

The Humboldt Current creates one of the world’s most productive nutrient-rich waters that rise along the coast. This is a perfect condition for abundant plankton which leads to an eco region that teems with huge schools of small fish like anchovies and sardines.

The cool waters of the Humboldt Current provide a constant supply of food for big fish such as Dorado (coryphaena hippurus – also called dolphinfish), barracuda (sphyraena indiastes), blue and black marlin, yellow-finned and long-finned tuna (thunnus albacares, thunnus alalunga), snook and many other species.

Here I am in San Vicente with dorado just north of Manta and adjoining San Clemente.

ecuador-dorado-6

Four world-record Pacific bigeye tuna (similar to yellow fin tuna) catches come from Ecuador ranging in size from 236 pounds  to 375-pounds.

Sea food includes Stripped Marlin, Tuna, Grouper, Wahoo and Corvina (seabass).

Trout is in the rivers and lakes of the Andes like this high country lake . ecuador-trout-site

ecuador-trout-fisherman-10

Trout grow well in the Andean Highlands above 7,000 feet, with average water and air temperature virtually constant year-round. The trout feed on scuds, leeches, small fish and various bugs.

Even the seafood in the Andes is fresh. Here is the Ibarra fish market were they bring the fish in overnight.

ecuador-food

Prices are really low… mostly about a dollar a pound.

ecuador-food

Plus there is Quinoa, a full protein grain of the Andes. We make our cake and bread gluten free and packed with protein at Meson de las Flores.  Here is one of our chef’s quinoa cakes with a fresh coconut pudding.

ecuador-food

There are no high fat, fast food franchises in the area. This is as close to a fast food as you’ll get in Cotacachi.

ecuador-food

Much better than a Big Mac!…corn roasted on a grill.

ecuador-food

Fruit is vine picked ripe and really cheap… every type… tropical and northern… apples, blackberries, cherries, strawberries and pears.

For those interested in healthier nutrition, here are three nutritional tips sent to us by our friend Blaine Watson.

A diet high in turmeric may help reduce weight gain by suppressing the growth of new fat tissue, according to a study conducted by researchers from Tufts University and published in the Journal of Nutrition. The study was funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and a grant from the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan.

“Weight gain is the result of the growth and expansion of fat tissue, which cannot happen unless new blood vessels form, a process known as angiogenesis,” senior author Mohsen Meydani said. “Based on our data, curcumin appears to suppress angiogenic activity in the fat tissue of mice fed high fat diets.”Curcumin is an antioxidant chemical in the polyphenol family that naturally occurs in turmeric. In contrast to some phytochemicals, it is easily absorbed by the body.

Researchers fed two groups of mice identical high-fat diets, supplementing the diets of the half the mice with 500 milligrams of curcumin per kilogram of body weight per day. They found that mice in the curcumin group had significantly lower blood cholesterol and significantly less microvessel density in fat tissue than the mice in the control group, implying less blood vessel growth and thus less overall growth of fat tissue. The livers of mice in the curcumin group also contained significantly less fat than those of the mice in the control group.

“In general, angiogenesis and an accumulation of lipids in fat cells contribute to fat tissue growth,” Meydani said. The researcher also noted that “curcumin appeared to be responsible for total lower body fat in the group that received supplementation.”In a similar study conducted on cells rather than animals, the researchers also found curcumin to suppress angiogenesis. The chemical also appeared to suppress the expression of two genes linked to angiogenesis in both the mouse and cell experiments.

I wanted to remind everyone  that turmeric is to be used with some degree of awareness. We never eat it raw. It must be cooked in our food. Capsules are therefore not an option.  We use only organic turmeric. The regular turmeric you buy for example in an Indian store is heavily adulterated with chalk and talcum powder and food coloring.

We also use turmeric sparingly. It is highly highly effective in purifying the liver. The North American/Western diet and lifestyle is highly toxic with many many sources of impurities which are metabolized and stored in the liver. When turmeric is introduced to the diet these toxins/impurities are squeezed from the liver (this would be a contributing factor to weight loss) and this is a good thing but not if it is overwhelming to the body. Detox crisis is a real possibility.

A gentle and universal curry for western palates would be something like:

3 parts powdered coriander
3 parts powdered fennel
1-2 parts powdered cumin
1-2 parts turmeric

Last Chance Essential Oils

We sadly received the note below about last chance essential oils from our friends John and Candace Newman.

Merri and I always use Candace’s oils because she gained so much wisdom on these trips and through her lifetime global studies.

So we were saddened to read this note: Gary & Merri, our oil sales will close October 15, 2009.

After 18 years, the decision to stop selling our Aromatherapy oil products has not been made lightly.  After much evaluation & contemplation, we believe it is the right thing to do. On October 15th, the retail and wholesale shopping carts will close. Our oils & formulas are 10% off from now until October 15th … or until the supply runs out.

We know many of you use our oils & formulas daily. This discount helps you stock up on the ones you love, and is our “early” Christmas and Holiday Sale we normally run in November.  With proper care our products last well over a year.

See August’s newsletter about proper care.

I’m continuing my free monthly Newsletter to keep you informed of classes, education and company changes; the subscription to my Aromatherapy Guides for those who want continuing education; Consultations and Treatments; and more Classes. My Classes on DVD’s and The Good Medicine Tin® will continue to be available to purchase by fax, email or phone.

John will continue to be our webmaster and will pursue some of his other special interests dear to his heart.

Aromatherapy and essential oils are one of the many soulful elements that truly make a difference in people’s lives and health around the world.  We appreciate you and are grateful for your continued support and loyalty over the past 20 years of my work with essential oils.

Our Best to You,
Candace and John Newman

Candace also still has some essential oil mists that offer a gentle Aroma therapeutic wash that can have immediate and profound benefits, calming the mind, balancing the emotions, nurturing the skin, cleansing the body and surrounding environment.

Merri and I especially use essential oil mists when we travel or are in public places. On the plane they freshen and purify the stale airline environment. We also use them to relieve the heat of the summer.

Essential oil mists also make great stress-free gifts.  They are always in our Christmas and birthday mix.

Candace is offering a sample of four 1 oz essential oil mist blends each in amber plastic bottle with zipper carrying case with the discount.    An Essential Oil Mist Chart is included free.

It contains:

* Lavender Mist
* Lavender-Peppermint Mist
* Lavender-Rose Mist
* Rejuvenation Mist

The Lavender Mist contains aloe vera, pure water, vegetable glycerin and pure Lavender essential oil. This mist cleanses and hydrates the face, calms the mind and body tissue, balances the emotions.  It is excellent for sunburn, itching or rashes.

Lavender-Peppermint Mist contains aloe vera, pure water, vegetable glycerin, Lavender and Peppermint pure essential oils. This mist is uplifting and refreshing. It comforts and soothes the emotions and provides a feeling of  “menthol lift” lightness.  Keep one in refrigerator for a cool refreshing mist.  Use whenever feeling sluggish, anxious, or out of balance.

Lavender-Rose Mist contains Aloe vera, pure water, vegetable glycerin and Lavender and Rose Otto pure essential oils.

Rejuvenation Mist contains Aloe vera, pure water, vegetable glycerin, Sandalwood, Patchouli, Frankincense, Geranium and Rose Otto pure essential oils. This mist cleanses and hydrates the face.

Ecuador Investing & Business Idea

Here is an Ecuador investing and  business ideas for Ecuador or anywhere you live.

In a moment, I am going to show you how to own this 16 room hotel in Otavalo for almost nothing… maybe even free.

otavalo-hotel-for-sale

First let’s look at a business idea for this hotel… rootlessness… a growing global problem.

Problems create opportunity so there is business opportunity in rootlessness.

Technology has given mankind the ability to work, live and invest globally… a wonderful benefit.   Yet this mobility has created a problem as well.

One of my messages many years ago (2002) outlined that there would be a growing market for friendship in this modern era.

That message said: The market for friendship has to grow because technology has made society so  mobile. I for example have lost nearly every single really good friend from school.  I haven’t seen most of the friends I grew up with for forty five years. I imagine they still live in Portland, Oregon, but maybe not. They might all have become travelers like myself. Out of a six pack of school buddies, Steve is the only one with whom I keep in touch.

When I moved to North Carolina, I visited the local car mechanic named Jay Dee to have some work done on my 1986 Suzuki Samari Jeep. This is the perfect farm car but often needs work.  Jay Dee’s garage is a barn by his house and local people sort of collect around that barn to shoot the breeze, spit a little tobacco and talk over old times. “Remember old Johnny Blevins and that time he threw you in the creek,” one of them might say. “Well darn that must a been fifty years ago.”

ecuador-business

My Samari… 23 years old and only 62,000 original miles.

I love being with these wonderful mountain people and their easy going, friendly ways. They have such deep roots and ties and are comfortable and at ease with their friends. They know who they are, where they are and who their friends are because they have been with them their entire lives. These people aren’t hanging around Jay Dee just to get their cars fixed. They are enjoying a ritual of friendship that has united them since they were kids.

I love this! My friendships are scattered and far flung all over the world. I sometimes don’t get to see my friends for years!

A huge segment (much of the wealthiest) of the population no longer lives where they were brought up. They have lost touch with their roots.  The more technology removes us from our origins, the more the market for togetherness and friendship grows.

Friendship is an extension of togetherness and can develop around many themes. For the mountain folk of North Carolina or anyone who remains rooted in their birthplace the theme is mostly “down home”.

These friendships are tight and if you have ever heard the phrase “You ain’t from around here are ya, boy,” you have experienced the reverse side of this type of friendship. The implication is that with these long term, locally based friendships, the only way to be a friend is to have been there for years.

Some of the years I lived in Gloucestershire, England were spent in a tiny village named Chalford. I lived over  a local pub there, “The Mechanics Arms.” Though I was a newcomer to the area I was accepted as an old timer because of family ties. One man in his sixties, who visited the pub every night however wasn’t quite part of the crowd.

Many of the locals talked about him as the new man in town. I was surprised later to learn he had lived in Chalford for nearly thirty years!  The locals would always view him as less trustworthy because he had not been born and raised there. Childhood experiences were the basis of their deepest friendships.

Many of us will never have this type of long term familiarity friendship. We have moved around too much. This creates markets for many types of new friendships.

Networking is a form of business friendship. The theme of the friendship is scratch my back and perhaps I can scratch yours or we will both be better off scratching each others’ backs. Such friendships can be local, state or country wide or as mine span the globe. They can be very informal or very formal.

The market for formal friendships has already exploded.  Incredible growth of support groups such as AA are a sign of the momentum in the friendship market. Such groups offer a format for formal friendships and range from disease support groups to abused support groups. Each offers an organized way to have friends. The growth of these groups is not because there are more problems than thirty years ago. The growth is because of the increasing market for friendships.

We can see this trend spreading everywhere. For example one telephone company has recognized this growing trend and has successfully built its business around the idea of calling “family and friends.

This thought (that a market for friendships would grow) was correct.  We see this on the internet with one of the biggest trends being social networking sites.

A recent New York Times article, “Invisible Immigrants, Old and Left With ‘Nobody to Talk To” by Patricia Leigh Brown reveals a sliver of this problem.

Here is an excerpt from this article:   They gather five days a week at a mall called the Hub, sitting on concrete planters and sipping thermoses of chai. These elderly immigrants from India are members of an all-male group called The 100 Years Living Club. They talk about crime in nearby Oakland, the cheapest flights to Delhi and how to deal with recalcitrant daughters-in-law.

Together, they fend off the well of loneliness and isolation that so often accompany the move to this country late in life from distant places, some culturally light years away.

“If I don’t come here, I have sealed lips, nobody to talk to,” said Devendra Singh, a 79-year-old widower. Meeting beside the parking lot, the men were oblivious to their fellow mall rats, backpack-carrying teenagers swigging energy drinks.

In this country of twittering youth, Mr. Singh and his friends form a gathering force: the elderly, who now make up America’s fastest-growing immigrant group. Since 1990, the number of foreign-born people over 65 has grown from 2.7 million to 4.3 million — or about 11 percent of the country’s recently arrived immigrants. Their ranks are expected to swell to 16 million by 2050. In California, one in nearly three seniors is now foreign born, according to a 2007 census survey.

Now let’s look at this 16 room hotel in Otavalo that you can have for almost nothing… maybe even free and how it could offer a business that solves this problem.

First, let me detail the hotel and why a fabulous bargain has come up… and how this hotel can fit into the friendship market.

This  is an really good Ecuador income opportunity, a…

ecuador-banking-business

hotel for sale in Otavalo.

The owners have had this on the market for a number of years at one million dollars. We thought this price was too high and never wrote about it.

Earlier this year they dropped the price to $750,000 and offered us $150,000 commission if we sold it. I wrote then:  The owners offered us a $150,000 commission to sell the hotel. We are not brokers and do not take commission so our reply was “cut the price for our readers”!  This would place the price at $600,000… an interesting value.

$600,000 may have been interesting but the owner now just emailed us and dropped the price to $495,000.  This places the price beyond  an interesting value into the bargain range.

Plus the owners again offered us a commission.  We do not take commissions so whatever (how much commission was not clear) amount they would pay could be deducted from this price.

This makes the hotel a real bargain.

At $750,000 the commission of $150,000 was 20%.  We don’t know of course about the commission, and I didn’t want to wait to verify this because this hotel is valuable, beautiful and it could  work out at about $35 a foot on the building and leaves you the land (which right next to Otavalo market is worth a lot).

Yet there is more. I believe you can get the land and the 16 room hotel for almost nothing.

I’ll explain how below.

First: the hotel details. The hotel is right next to Otavalo Market, one of the largest tourist attractions in Ecuador.

The property has these characteristics:  Appx. 30,000 sq. feet of  land and 12,000 sq.  feet of  building in 3 apartments and 16 hotel rooms.

Property Details:  The property consists of approximately 30,000 square feet of land, with trees, gardens and many types of exotic birds.  The gardens…

are large… well groomed and…

have a wonderful patio.

otavalo-hotel-for-sale

Ma too likes it there.

otavalo-hotel-for-sale

There is approximately 12,000 square feet of solid brick and cement construction.

On the property, there is plenty of room for expansion and development, especially in a town where there is absolutely no land left to develop.  The building is built in the old colonial style with finely crafted hardwood arched windows and doors, rustic floor tile and traditional clay-tiled roof.  The building is constructed according to U.S. anti-seismic standards.

The owner claims this is one of the best built constructions in Otavalo—and one of the prettiest in the city!

The building boasts excellent water pressure on all four floors. (Please don’t pooh pooh this quality!) The building has a powerful, propane gas-fueled boiler system capable of producing up to 700 gallons of hot water a day.  With access to the land/building from two streets, the property has frontage on 3 streets, which have been newly paved by the City of Otavalo.

Characteristics:  16 rooms, large social area (restaurant), large working kitchen, two medium-sized apartments, one large penthouse apartment, small building in back (approximately 250 square meters) that serves as a laundry room and storage facility, which also has a full bathroom and a working fireplace.  This could easily be converted into a small rental property.  Adjacent, yet private, to the main property, and which consists of 350 square meters of our total property, is a working area and parking garage (which can accommodate approximately 6 cars), with clothes lines, and general storage area.

First floor: Consists of large working kitchen, with back door exit to outdoor enclosed pantry/food storage room, laundry area and herb garden.  There is a large dining room (approximately 2,500 square feet) with excellent working fireplace, and space to comfortably entertain 60 or so people.

Restaurant is beautiful also.

The dining room leads outside onto the tiled patio and garden where there are tables and chairs for serving and relaxing, and this area may be used to accommodate another 30 or so people.  Also on the first floor there are 8 rooms which have served as hotel rooms, each 55 X 45 feet  in size with large bathrooms.

All rooms face out into the garden and the property is in front of Mount  Imbabura.   Hundreds of hummingbirds and exotic birds roam the grounds.

Let’s look at the owner’s explanation of why they have lowered the price… then we’ll see how to get this hotel for almost nothing.

Hello Merri and Gary,  This is Margaret from Ali Shungu in Otavalo. I have been living up here on the mountain for about 6 months full time, going back and forth to the Hotel.  I feel better up here in my little house with my projects.   I have been recovering from an illness and have been in the hospital in Quito. They said that if this diverticulitis does not clear up, and it has been bad for about 6 months with 3 months of vomiting, fever, etc.,–that I will need an operation to remove it.  I’m drinking all kinds of herbs and aloe vera cactus and only boiled simple foods, and hoping to heal without an operation.  Did 2 rounds of antibiotics, might have to do more…….I will say though, that the hospital bill was not that bad in Voz Andes for all the tests that I had and treatments, etc.   I will now take care of myself more, and do more praying!  I might need intravenous antibiotics but I do not want to go back to the hospital in Quito.

There you have it… a owner whose health no longer allows them to run the hotel nor wait out a high priced buyer.

Here is how to get this 16 room hotel for almost nothing. I believe that the three apartments, if separated from the hotel and sold on their own, are worth near the price of the hotel.   I do not know the Otavalo real estate market so well…but I have seen the apartments and penthouse and they are exquisite.

If they are and if you can buy this for hotel in the $400,000 range… this means the 16 room hotel, the grounds and the restaurant are almost free.

This will require some negotiating, some work and legal work  (Ecuador lawyers are not very expensive)… but could provide one heck of a deal.

We have put our Ecuador Living subscribers in touch with the sellers.  To gain this contact information you can subscribe to Ecuador Living here.

If the hotel is not under offer, we’ll show it on our upcoming October Andean Real Estate tour.    See tour details here.

Merri and I are not involved financially in any way with this offer.  We have not looked at the hotel’s financial accounts, legal situation, titles, nor had an engineering inspection, so be sure to take all normal precautions if you are interested.  Especially look at the labor obligations you’ll absorb.

Our recommendation for those who are interested in Ecuador is to come visit first… look around… rent and stay awhile… before you buy.  One reason for this recommendation is that when you are here awhile you’ll see bargains… like this and I believe for the reasons stated that Hotel Ali Shungu is now a bargain.

Now let’s see how this creates opportunity from the problem of rootlessness.

Americans and Canadians are flocking to Ecuador.  I know.  Our Ecuador Living business is going wild.  The subscription pace has almost doubled recently and the request for rentals in this area has skyrocketed past our ability to keep up!

The demand is especially strong at the lower income level… those who are retiring and can no longer have a decent life in Canada or the US… especially in places where there is winter sun.

There people are isolated… often not speaking Spanish and with little to do.   So Turn this hotel into a residence for gringos. Provide free internet… US papers…. weekly Spanish lessons… a support program… group tours, travel assistance etc.

There is one more value.  Yesterday’s message How to Make Money in this Multi Currency Era explained how, due to the falling US dollar, Ecuador real estate has become a 10% better value since this last February.

Gary
