This Little Horse Creek Farms is a unique refuge with seven buildings offering  privacy and nature, but with easy access to every convenience of the modern world.

Though it is known as the “Lost Province” Ashe county North Carolina is the cradle of one of America’s important historical events.

Tucked in along the North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee border the farm offers freedom from the “Madding Crowd” but is connected with the world in the most technological ways.

The farm is completely rural but in the middle of the Eastern USA, an equidistant drive to Orlando, New York, Chicago, St Louis and closer to cities such as Washington DC, Jacksonville, Memphis and Atlanta.   New four and six lane highways make Charlotte and the North Carolina Piedmont less than two hours away.  An expanded West Jefferson community airport now accepts private jets and an easy to use, regional airport is an hour and 30 minutes from the farm.  Numerous meadows are suited for conversion into helicopter landing pads.

Little Horse Creek is a tributary of Big Horse Creek, that runs into the New River and then flows into the Ohio, Mississippi and finally the Gulf of Mexico.  But it all begins here, in innumerable springs, each running though mountain hollows into an ever increasing flow.

This is New River Country, the oldest river in America and this provides added safety to the farm.  There is a general lack of seismic activity in the Southern Appalachians because they were formed over a billion years ago.  This created a stability that is well recorded in the rocks.  These rocks are at the core of our mountains formed when there was just one continent surrounded by one ocean.  Remnants of the super continent make up much of the Blue Ridge core and fragments of this billion-year old mass are still found at the surface in many places near our farm.

North Carolina had its earthquakes millennia ago.  In recent centuries damaging earthquakes have been rare, most are under a 3.0 magnitude.  All known faults in North Carolina are ancient and remain inactive.  Volcanic activity in the Blue Ridge occurred 300 to 400 million years ago, and all volcanoes have been extinct for at least 100 million years.

The county began in the mid 1700s as part of the Watauga Settlement now an area that composes Ashe, Watauga and Wilkes counties. Three main settlements were created by settlers who mostly came down the Great Valley through Virginia.

During the Revolutionary War, on September 25, 1780, a group called the Overmountain Men or Watauga Boys assembled on the Watauga River and began a march to Kings Mountain. The Battle of Kings Mountain began when the 900 Patriots (including John Crockett, father of Davy Crockett), approached the British supporters led by British Major Patrick Ferguson.

The battle lasted just 65 minutes but was a pivotal moment as the British rout forced British commander Lord Cornwallis to abandon his plan to invade North Carolina.

In his book, “The Winning of the West”, Theodore Roosevelt wrote: “This brilliant victory marked the turning point of the American Revolution.” Thomas Jefferson called it, “The turn of the tide of success.” President Herbert Hoover at Kings Mountain said, “This is a place of inspiring memories.  It’s significance, should place it beside Lexington, Bunker Hill, Trenton and Yorktown.”

Merrily Farms sits in the heart of this historical area graced by Little Horse Creek as the finest private estate in the area.

Below the farmhouse a stocked trout pond is filled with trophy sized brook, rainbow and golden trout.

The farmhouse itself reflects the spirit of the farm, a juxtaposition of the old and new.  Though the design is reminiscent of timeless old country farmhouses, the construction is of modern, strong, PolySteel Insulating Concrete Forms that deliver cost-effective, high-performance, safer, quieter, more comfortable, energy efficient, structurally secure, and environmentally responsible, structures.

The Art’s council promotes the Old Time Musicians and Fiddler’s Convention.  There is a weekly Saturday and Wednesday farmers’ market, monthly gallery crawls, one of the biggest arts & crafts festivals in the high country, an antique festival, little theater performances, annual holiday events.

West Jefferson has coffee houses, art galleries, studios featuring local and regional artists’.

The Ashe County Arts Council showcases local artists with rotating exhibits and special events.  West Jefferson hosts a Christmas in July festival, attended by tens of thousands, and has 15 murals that create a walking tour throughout downtown.

This area is quiet and pollution free.  The stars are brilliant at night.  Crickets, katydids and frogs serenade every evening.  There are numerous picnics sites in the meadows and on the creek and the farmhouse has a huge front porch overlooking the creek.

 

A FIRMETTE is available that shows how the farm at 3,000 feet and rising is away from low laying areas and traditional storm and flood paths.

The altitude adds to comfort as well.  There are few biting insects and no poisonous snakes in the area.

Ecuador Stock Market


See below why I am not buying into the Ecuador stock market… or any stock market at all.

First, let me be clear… there is not much of an Ecuador  stock market… never has been and probably won’t be for quite a while.

Merri and I do own a few Ecuador shares… in Cemento, an Ecuador cement company,  but these were purchased years ago when Ecuador had a stock market beginning to boom. Then the economy and sucre collapsed and all the Ecuador banking shares (including the ones we held) rushed to zero.

The Ecuador cement shares were all that was left… along with a lesson learned.

Yet there are two other reasons why you’ll not see many Ecuador equities in my portfolio.

In fact, you won’t see many stocks in our portfolio at all.  A review of my recent total asset allocation shows that I hold only 3% in equities.

An excerpt from our recent Multi Currency Update shows that I do not hold many shares at all and why I am not buying more now.

Last week my account adviser at Jyske Global Asset Management sent me this note.

Gary, The USD on the move!  The main focus this week has been on the FX market. We have had a long period of a declining US Dollar against most other currencies. The market participants have been waiting for an excuse to take profits. The market got its excuse last week, where we for the first time saw better than expected US unemployment figures. The non-farm payrolls where better than expected and the unemployment rate dropped to 10%. When the numbers hit the market the EUR/USD was trading above 1.5000 and during this week the USD strengthened approximately 5%, currently trading at 1.4350.

The correction of the EUR/USD also indicates that the psychology in the market could have changed. During 2009 improving economic figures led to a risk-on scenario where investors began  to diversify in to  more speculative markets and at the same time exiting the USD safe-haven. The change in psychology has resulted in a focus on possibly increasing interest rates as the economies worldwide begin to improve. The US economy shows signs of improvement and investors are thus beginning to focus on being long USD assets.

The FED however announced no change in the FED funds after their meeting on Wednesday. Bernanke told the market on the following press conference that the interest rate would remain unchanged until the economy is back on track and we see a significant drop in the unemployment rate. We therefore believe that the current strength in USD is temporary and we do expect the EUR/USD to turn around and once again go toward our target of 1.5500.

The main focus in Europe during the week has been on the down grading of the sovereign debt of Greece to BBB+, by both FITCH and S&P. Both rating agencies, still have Greece on a negative watch. The 10 year government bond of Greece now pays a historical 250 bps more than a 10 year German government bond.

Norway once again increased their interest rate with 25 bps, from 1.5% to 1.75%. Norway has seen an increase in the private consumption and a hot real estate market. The Central bank of Norway thus chose to increase the interest rate, even though the industrial production in Norway still suffers.

That note from my adviser cemented my thinking that the greenback’s upswing creates a good time to further reduce US dollar positions. I am reducing my euro positions as well.

The global economy continues to upswing and eventually interest rates will be heading up…. bit equities are at risk due to the chances of another economic slowdown and massive government economic stimulation that has supported high risk speculation.

So last week I added more emerging currencies with higher interest rates by liquidating my Jyske Invest Danish Bond Fund and Jyske Invest Euro Bond Fund.

I used the proceeds to purchase higher interest rate bonds away from the euro and mostly into the dollar zone but not the US dollar itself.

I purchased:

I also sold my Hungarian government bonds and bought the Polish bond below with the proceeds.

I see any period of US dollar strength as an opportunity to exit the greenback and accumulate other currencies.

On the dark side, we hate accounting. We cannot read balance sheets… nor do we trust them much… so we tend to avoid equities… which historically overall are the best investments of all…. if… you ignore the three cornerstones.

We only have two shares… Bank of Florida and Jyske Bank…. because we know (and like) the people and the concepts involved.  Plus we understand the financial business.  Otherwise the most we do in shares… even though we have helped others make many millions in the stock market… is buy ETFS or mutual funds.

When we invest in shares there are three factors we continually look for…

Investing Factor #1: Contrasts.

Investing Factor #2: Trends.

Investing Factor #3: Value.

We are always looking for contrasts in value that will eventually create trends.

This is why we began buying real estate in Florida and are not investing in many equities now.  A recent New York Times article “New Slip in Housing Prices Undercuts Fragile Optimism” by David Streitfeld explains why.  Here is an excerpt:

Just as the economy is finally beginning to strengthen, the real estate market is showing new signs of deterioration.  Prices slipped in many cities in October, new figures show, despite low mortgage rates and a generous tax credit meant to spur sales. Now rates are starting to rise, making it harder for many buyers to afford a house, and the tax credit seems to be losing its capacity to lure them into the market.

The renewed worries about housing come against a backdrop of improvement in the broader economy.  Surveys suggest consumers are growing more confident. That better mood probably helped improve holiday retail sales. The number of people joining the ranks of the jobless is dwindling, while the hiring of temporary workers is up, a traditional harbinger of recovery.

Still, economic growth for the third quarter was more modest than originally reported; it was revised down to an annual rate of 2.2 percent from 2.8 percent. Many economists are fretting that housing could drag down the tenuous recovery.

The figures released Tuesday showed that the Standard & Poor’s/Case-Shiller home price index, a widely watched measure of housing markets in 20 metropolitan areas, rose 0.4 percent in October from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.
It was the fifth consecutive month that prices were up, but the rate of increase has dropped sharply from the impressive gains of the summer. Prices in nine of the 20 cities were flat or down.

“I’m worried. Everyone’s worried,” said Karl E. Case, the Wellesley College economist who helped design the housing index that provided fresh cause for alarm on Tuesday. “If prices sink 15 percent from here, which is a possibility, and the 2008 and 2009 loans go bad, then we’re back where we were before — in a nightmare.”

One might think why invest in real estate… not stocks… when real estate seems down.

Due to the last economic downturn… many governments… led by the US… spent trillions flooding the market with easy money… for big banks.

These big banks in turn borrowed the money and poured that money into stock markets.  This made the banks look profitable and pushed stock markets up… at the expense of currencies around the world.

Government spending rarely works efficiently as evidenced by the multi billions spent of security that missed a Nigerian, whose father’s warning to the US Embassy validated a risk… that the CIA had already picked up… even though he was on a risk list… and after buying a ticket for cash…. and arriving without luggage… he was allowed to walk onto a plane headed for the US with a bomb in his underwear.

This post 9-11 security may not have been such a great government investment.

Just imagine that the economic spending from the governments of the world have created the same situation… making the public feel better when  the reality is… the risk is the same… or actually worse… because of the government’s heavy handed involvement.

If the economy once again stalls…  the stock markets… many of which are thinly traded… will collapse like a house of cards. All that government money (actually your money and mine) will be gone.

Repayment of the loss will most likely be made via inflation.  Stock portfolios will be wiped out.

This concerns me.  Jyske Global Asset Managers are concerned as well.  Their low risk managed account for US investors has only 17.5% in equities and they are only in seven investments… of which five are major Blue Chips.

Only a very small portion of the portfolio is in other equities, iShares II BRIC and Jyske Invest IT Equities.

If we see a double dip recession, then real estate will remain depressed perhaps for a bit.  However there is real utility in real estate and the very inflation that could ruin so many investors will benefit those who hold real estate (and can hold on) plus those who hold commodities and have their own business.

There is no doubt still some good individual shares but overall shares offered good value early last year… not now so investors should beware.

Food in a Terrorist EMP Crisis


Finding food and water could be a problem in a terrorist EMP crisis.

Tuesday’s message at this site saw seven steps that could help us survive and prosper in a new era that could unfold if there would be a terrorist EMP attack.

#1:  Move well away from the USA…. to an agriculturally based country.  This is one reason Merri and I have been active in Ecuador for nearly 15 years.
#2: Move to Small Town USA.  Our sites have been looking at the benefits of this for years and why we live on an agricultural property.
#3: Create your own source of food & water.
#4: Create a local source of hardened energy and communications.
#5: Keep some gold and or silver on hand.
#6: Know how to take care of your own health.
#7:  Hold some assets outside of North America.

We’ll look at some Ecuador food property below.  First, this message looks at some ideas that can help us improve our odds of having access to food and water in a terrorist EMP crisis wherever we are.

May I share three important points up front?

Point #1: I do not think (or maybe hope) that a crisis of serious magnitude will take place in our lifetime.

Point #2: Yet one could… so I try to be somewhat prepared… without jerking my entire life out of joint.

Point #3:  None of the steps that Merri and I have taken below have anything to do with expecting a terrorist crisis.  One cannot foresee all the consequences of a maximum magnitude terrorist crisis. Trying to do so is inefficient… and wastes time. History suggests that humanity always figures out how to avoid the big terrorist crunch… and/or adapts when the terrorists attack.

Merri and I try to live our life down the path we feel we are led… enjoy it… prepare reasonably and then leave the rest in the hands of God.

Let’s look at what we have done about food and water.   Then recognizing that most of mankind does not or cannot live in places as isolated as ours, we’ll look at some more urban alternatives.

Our North Carolina farm can certainly provide all the food and water a family needs.  Many generations who lived here have proved this fact.

Yet it is our love for this life and the people of the Blue Ridge that brought and keeps us here part of each year…. not security from a terrorist attack.

This is a side benefit that this lifestyle provides us with an independent source of food…. domestic and wild.

We were doing all this before Merri and I had a clue about EMPs and the risk of a terrorist attack.

What can one do… if… you do not want to live on a farm?

There are options.

One option is an urban farm. A recent AP article entitled “USDA to Unveil “Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food” Initiative” by Ken Meter provides some clues. Here are excerpts from this article.   As I prepare for five days of announcements next week, when USDA plans to unveil its new “Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food” initiative, the buzz across my desk is about the potential for urban agriculture.  EPA reminds that brownfield moneys can be used to convert polluted land into working farms in inner-city areas.  I think the potential is enormous, especially in formerly industrial cities, where the big factories are not going to come back, but there are large tracts of vacant land that already have water mains (think irrigation) running under them. Each of these cities spends billions of dollars for food, and can generate significant local income by building the farms and distribution channels needed to cycle that food within city borders. We’ll also need to grow new urban farmers, and tap the excellent skills that many new immigrants already have in growing food.

Did you know that forty-one percent of all U.S. agricultural commodities are sold from farms in metropolitan counties?  Were you aware that 55% of the money made from producing farm commodities was made in metropolitan areas in 2007 ($15.7 billion of $28.7 billion)?  Moreover, Department of Defense studies show that Victory Gardens during World War II produced 40% of all produce consumed by Americans, after two seasons of gardening. This shows the potential for small-scale activity adding up to a big difference.

Gardening can provide food… plus it is good for you.  I believe living on a farm has helped my health.  Walking a lot is good. Working in fresh air can’t be bad.

If you can’t or don’t want to garden… how about participating in Community Assisted Agriculture (CSA)?

Thinking about signing up for a CSA but want to learn more about the idea before you commit? Read on.  Over the last 20 years, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has become a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer. Here are the basics: a farmer offers a certain number of “shares” to the public. Typically the share consists of a box of vegetables, but other farm products may be included. Interested consumers purchase a share (aka a “membership” or a “subscription”) and in return receive a box (bag, basket) of seasonal produce each week throughout the farming season.

This arrangement creates several rewards for both the farmer and the consumer. In brief…

Advantages for farmers:

•    Get to spend time marketing the food early in the year, before their 16 hour days in the field begin
•    Receive payment early in the season, which helps with the farm’s cash flow
•    Have an opportunity to get to know the people who eat the food they grow

Advantages for consumers:

•    Eat ultra-fresh food, with all the flavor and vitamin benefits
•    Get exposed to new vegetables and new ways of cooking
•    Usually get to visit the farm at least once a season
•    Find that kids typically favor food from “their” farm – even veggies they’ve never been known to eat
•    Develop a relationship with the farmer who grows their food and learn more about how food is grown

It’s a simple enough idea, but its impact has been profound. Tens of thousands of families have joined CSAs, and in some areas of the country there is more demand than there are CSA farms to fill it. The government does not track CSAs, so there is no official count of how many CSAs there are in the U.S.. LocalHarvest has the most comprehensive directory of CSA farms, with over 2,500 listed in our grassroots database. In 2008, 557 CSAs signed up with LocalHarvest, and in the first two months of 2009, an additional 300 CSAs joined the site.

The leaf change has begun here in the Blue Ridge and autumn’s glorious message can help us improve our investing and business. I explain below.

Yesterday’s message, Ecuador Gold,  was about gold, good value real estate and the power of incorporating a PIEC (Personal Income Earning Corridor) in your life so you can:

1.    Do what you like.
2.    Act beyond money.
3.    Work with like minded souls.

One key to developing this PIEC is to know what you are investing in and… why.

Plato summed it up nicely about 2,500 years ago… investor… “know thyself.”

Take for example, what Merri and I knew about ourselves, as we headed south in our Honda mini van last week to look at over 20 properties in three days… a short list derived from researching hundreds of properties for sale.

Our hound, Ma, was with us… she is very happy about traveling more to Florida and less to Ecuador because she far prefers traveling in the golden rolling cave rather than being eaten (and then regurgitated) by the big, silver bird.

Merri and I were happy knowing that a common denominator between Ecuador and Florida is that each have a lot of sun at times when other places have a lot of cold!

As the autumn’s first frosts were appearing at our mountain home… we enjoyed the 85+ degree sunny weather.

A recent article entitled Ecuador Florida Connection looked at value real estate in both  Ecuador and Florida and evoked this response from a reader:  Gary, I love reading your daily emails. You are right about the many foreclosures in Florida but let me say that those foreclosures are mostly in places that would make you feel like a “gringo in Ecuador”.

I have checked on quite a few but the prices are just coming back down to what they are really worth.  Good luck in your quest !  I am trying to talk my wife into a place in Ecuador which she may warm up to a while.Maybe I can talk her into an inexpensive condo. What do have to offer preferably near the water (Salinas).

I replied: Agreed… but there is also appears to be a hole in the market for Central Fl property in the $1m to $750k range.  There are very few buyers. We have been watching prices tumble hundreds of thousands.  We are viewed one property that started at $800K+. It dropped $100K last week from $395 and is now down to $295K.  This is the sector where we are looking.

started at $1.7 million dollars. Then Merri watched online it dropped to $1.2 million…then went to $899,000.  When we looked, it had dropped to $85o,000 and was down to $499,000 when it disappeared from the listing…foreclosed.  It is on a clear spring fed lake, has around 3 acres, all fenced, dock, boat house, large beautiful guest house, barn, pool, high ceilings and even a sauna/workout room AND in an excellent neighborhood near the historic town of Mt. Dora.

The broker that showed this house to us is Shirley Peacock at Coldwell Banker All Stars  in Mount Dora (There are two CBs in Mt. Dora).  Her email is shirley.peacock@mfr.mlxchange.com whose attitude is to help make a sale, and if it is a foreclosure or a short sale, she has knowledgeable attorneys and doesn’t flinch on these sometimes “difficult” properties.  Usually where there is difficulty, there is profitability.  We have profited by her advice and knowledge and spent a lot of time with her and had a lot of fun looking at one after another beautiful great properties.

Why did we pass so quickly on this house?  It is certainly beautiful, has excellent value and had all the qualities we were looking for…but what it didn’t have for us as much privacy that we long for…but still what a value!

We have a very defined search for good value, Florida real estate that we would like to live in.   We use the Golden Rule of Business Simplicity…  “Our desires represent the desires of many others.”

In short, the Golden Rule of Simplicity means that… “Your Passions Represent Markets.”  Figure out what you love and why and you’ll have good, strong business and investing ideas.

Expanding on this example…Merri and I love living in the sun so we know many others do as well.  This means if we buy real estate in the sun and lakefront… at a good price… there is a good chance we can sell it later for a profit.

So we are looking for places where we would like to live… in the $750,000 to $1,000,000 range where we would like to live.

Yet this is not all.

First we expect to pay much less because of this flat spot in the market. We like to go where no one else is competing.

As we expand on this example we cannot leave out the importance of knowing where one is on the diffusion curve.

To understand this better, let’s look at research on diffusion models.

A well-known diffusion study followed the spread of a new hybrid corn in Iowa in the 1930s. There were 250 farmers in the area that were observed. The goal was to see how fast these farmers accepted and switched to the new hybrid, which was superior in every way to the existing corn that the farmers had been growing.

Though this hybrid cost less gave better, more dependable crops and higher yields, not all the farmers began to use the corn at once.

Only a few farmers started using the hybrid in 1932 and 1933. In 1934 16 more switched. Then in 1935 21 more followed. 1936 saw the highest switching when 61 farmers began using the hybrid. Then there were 46, 36, 14, and 3 that switched, leaving only two of the 254 farmers studied.

In this study, the original few who began using this corn were the Innovators. These are the adventurous people who will always try anything new. Innovators start trends but do not cause the trends to take off. They instead infect the Early Adaptors 16 who in 1934 and 21 in 1935 that began using the hybrid. These are the opinion leaders in the community that will cause the trend to spread. These are people that cause the trend to really spread.

They were followed by the Early Majority (the 36 who switched in 1936), the Late Majority (61 in 1937). Finally they are followed by the Deliberate (46 in 1938 and 36 in 1939), Skeptical Mass (14 in 1940 and 3 in 1941) finally leaving only the Laggards (the two who still had not adapted by 1941).

Whenever looking at your PIEC, ask  “Where am I most comfortable in the diffusion process?”

There is potential and a risk reward balance in every part of the curve. What counts is making sure you are in tune with the diffusion position of any idea that appeals to you .

For example even laggards can find exciting niche opportunities.   In fact some times laggards find themselves turned into innovators… such as the low tech Amish Lehman’s Catalog business.

Merri and I are well aware that we lay somewhere between innovators and early adapters.  We have worked and/or lived on every continent… visited over seventy countries and rarely had a month without a flight somewhere for 40 years.

We warn readers regularly that we are usually early in and early out.

The view in the 1970s from my flat at #5 Bowen Road was something like this… except most of those skyscrapers did not exist!   After I left, real estate appreciated 20 – or 30 times.

We were into real estate in Hong Kong, Isle of Man, London, Naples, Florida and Ecuador when the majority thought the idea was crazy.  We earned nice profits in each place but prices rose dramatically as much as ten times or more after we exited.

Many (maybe most) of our friends believed we were nuts! (And perhaps we were and are!)

Had we stayed in Hong Kong. Had we stayed in London. Had we stayed in the Isle of Man or in Naples… we might have millions of dollars more.

We spent years redoing, reclaiming, unearthing the treasures here in the Blue Ridge and building our country house which we love during the summer and fall…but not in the winter!

Yet viewing the autumn forest at dawn from our front porch here in the Blue Ridge gives me a greater thrill than any extra bucks.

If we make investments not in keeping with our nature, we will not be comfortable.  Without comfort, we are more likely to second guess ourselves and screw up. Restlessness and worry reduce the joy of affluence and reduce our investing and business effectiveness as well.

All of us need to invest in things that we feel are right to us.

For example when we moved out here to our North Carolina farm, many of our friends in the city thought we had lost our marbles.  Yet we have loved it.   Now that it is fixed up and worth many, many times our cost, we are considering selling part of the farm and reduce our position here.

We plan to always have some position here… perhaps less than now.

Lance Armstrong summed this idea up in a Time magazine article when asked about who to listen to about what to do in life when he said: “The important thing is to go around (collect data-get information). Then you really start to weigh your options. Which one feels right? It may not be the right decision, but it’s what makes you feel right.”

Why when we get everything fixed up… do we want to move on? The process… the challenge… the fun of creating, is what fulfills us…. more than the bottom line.   Once we have achieved our goal we like to move on… to the next project.

This understanding is vital to your investing and business.

Know yourself.

Know that ultimately you must make decisions for yourself.  Know that you can’t know everything.

Know that not every decision will bring maximum profit, but if it feels right for you and the process is enjoyable, you improve your odds of success.

Real estate in Ecuador is steady and rising.  Ditto for the Blue Ridge. Ashe Country real estate sales may have slowed but prices have not really faltered here.

We have been investing and creating in both the Blue Ridge and Ecuador for almost 15 years.  We love each place and will continue to enjoy them… but we love the next step as well so we are reducing our presence in each and adding Florida… with of all things… agricultural property… something we have never done.

This is a new challenge we believe makes good business sense… and for us… will be fun.

I did not treat them well.

Power of Global Investing Diversification


There is great power in global investing diversification.

Pure capitalistic theory says that in the long run… a global economy is good for everyone….overall.

Technology gives us the ability to buy from those who serve us best, wherever they are  in the world.  Why should we buy poorer quality goods locally at a higher price when someone from elsewhere can serve us better and for less.

Plus if we produce something better than anyone else we should be able to sell our product or service anywhere in the world as well.

Floridians and Californians buy apples from Oregon and North Carolina.

Oregonians and North Carolinians buy oranges from Florida or California because these areas each have special advantages… excellent conditions to produce and deliver those fruits clear across a continent, better and for less.

Global market advantages can be based on geography, infrastructure, skills sets, labor costs etc.

The theory of globalization is good but the process is not smooth. Globalization creates unemployment in many places and distorts many economies in the short term.  This usually pushes the process into the political arena and gets governments involved.  Governments often act based on political considerations rather than for good, long term economic reasons.

Plus business if given a chance… does not always encourage a free economy either.  Give big business a monopoly and they’ll tie up free trade even faster and much more efficiently than a government.

There is little, as businesses or investors, that we can do do to change these facts.

We are usually better off to adapt and take advantage of whatever situation exists instead.

This is what creates power in diversification.

The sun always shines somewhere. When our business and investments are diversified, we just have a better chance that our investments and business will be somewhere where there the business climate is sunny.

For example… a recent message Ecuador Beats Inflation looked at excerpts from a recent AOL.Money article by Jim Kuhnhenn entitled “White House Projects $9 Trillion Deficit”: In a chilling forecast, the White House is predicting a 10-year federal deficit of $9 trillion — more than the sum of all previous deficits since America’s founding. And it says by the next decade’s end the national debt will equal three-quarters of the entire U.S. economy.  But before President Barack Obama can do much about it, he’ll have to weather recession aftershocks including unemployment that his advisers said Tuesday is still heading for 10 percent.  Overall, White House and congressional budget analysts said in a brace of new estimates that the economy will shrink by 2.5 to 2.8 percent this year even as it begins to climb out of the recession. Those estimates reflect this year’s deeper-than-expected economic plunge.

Yet at the same time a Wall Street Journal article entitled “Ecuador Inflation To End ’09 Below 4%”  By Mercedes Alvaro shows that Ecuador’s economy is growing.
Here is an excerpt: QUITO (Dow Jones)–Ecuador’s inflation rate will end 2009 below 4% and the economy will grow close to 2% this year, President Rafael Correa said Wednesday.

“The annualized inflation will be below 4%,” Correa said late Wednesday in a radio and TV address. “There is not recession. Ecuador will have a growth of about 2%.”  “We have faced the biggest world crisis successfully,” Correa added. Early Wednesday the central bank said the Ecuadorian economy overall is poised to expand 1% in 2009.  Ecuador’s gross domestic product grew 6.52% in 2008 while inflation reached 8.83%.  According to central bank data, Ecuador’s liquid international reserves stood at $4.0 billion as of Aug. 21.  Last week, the central bank president, Carlos Vallejo, said that the government will repatriate in the coming days some $300 million of Ecuador’s liquid reserves invested abroad.  Ecuador’s liquid international reserves include public-sector deposits with the central bank, revenues from oil exports, loans from multilateral lenders and minimum reserve requirements from private banks.  In May, the central bank established a liquidity requirement forcing private banks to keep at least 45% of their assets and investments in Ecuador to draw back cash and boost domestic liquidity.

Because I am diversified in Ecuador, Georgia, Florida and North Carolina, in 2007, I was selling Florida property at the top of the market.  I was buying Ecuador real estate with those returns. Now that Florida  is down and Ecuador real estate has risen,  I am selling Ecuador real estate and buying in Florida.

A huge portion of all profits in business and investing come from timing.  Most commodity, stock and real estate markets go through ups and downs.  If you plan your investments and liquidity so you sell only at favorable times, global investing diversification enhances your chances of always having assets someplace where there is a seller’s market.

International Internet Business Idea


Here is an international internet business idea involving the convergence of  the future and nostalgia.

The idea is that “people want what they perceive they have lost”.

Recognizing what you feel you have lost, there are ways to to earn income wherever you live.

Problems create opportunity.

Having lost something is a problem.

Since each of us represents a unique market… if we can understand what we feel we have lost… we can understand a problem that many others also feel.

Here is a case study about this.

I feel that we have lost simpler times… when we were not so dependent on a system that is so far beyond of our control.

For example, if for any reason the internet does not work… I am out of business.

If for any reason the national food distribution system stops, I cannot eat.

If for any reason, gasoline supplies are cut off, I cannot travel.  Etc. Etc.

Access to these supplies are beyond my control.

That is one reason that we moved to an isolated North Carolina  farm 11 years ago.. a survival place… where we also love to be even though the system we depend upon is working fine.

I would like this farm to be more independent and sustainable.

The growing risks of a social economic systemic meltdown have created a window where the past and future have come together.

We perceive we have lost a simple, independent life.  In the future we may need to be more independent again.

So we can logically ask, “What needs for the future are now here?”

Here are five “the future is now” investing and business trends that have merged. They seem to have a bright future.

#1: Gain value added. This is the era when small and flexible are beautiful. Modern community technology makes it possible for even micro businesses to virtually integrate. I’ll give you a specific in a moment.

#2: Invest in real estate. I know, I know people keep saying that prices are going down. Yet these same people keep having kids without making more land. This looks like an opportunity distortion to me.

#3: Bet on inflation. I do not see how with the massive government bailouts this will not happen everywhere…to a great extent.

#4: Invest in alternative power and sustainability. The same fundamentals as for real estate are at work…more kids…no more fresh water…trees…soil…clean air…etc. Plus one factor more. Each child born expects more.

#5: Invest in natural health. The current social economic lifestyle is flawed.  The acquisition of stuff creates too much work…leading to too much stress…with too little time…and poor nutrition…leading to pharmaceutical and surgical intervention. This intervention costs too much and is not a pleasant, effective approach that optimizes maximum human efficiency.

I believe that anyone who invests or has a business in these areas has great potential.

Based on this belief, I am working with a team that is assembling a proposal for what we can do with our land creating a Draftwood Village, micro hydro power supply, etc.

That team has been organized by Ian Snider…  the formulator of the Draftwood concept.  Draftwod… sustainable harvested, value added timber hauled out by draft horses.

With these thoughts in mind we are taking our next step here at the farm which was originally an investment in real estate (#2 above). Plus our move here was also an investment in water. We have dozens of springs. This one for example, called the “Indian’s Trough”, is a historical site and produces many gallons of water a second.

This one spring alone provides all the water in our home and fills a small waterfall in our backyard, and waters all the animals out back.

Plus fills the wood fired, hot tub we have in the deep woods.

Fallen wood heats the water which comes from the spring year round at 49 degrees F. We usually soak at 105 to 110 F.

There are dozens of the springs on the property…hundreds of rivulets leading to streams and pretty soon they form our creeks, waterfalls…

Our land rises nearly 1,000 feet. You can see the rise on an aerial photo. The blue lines are roads on the farm. The bald at the top sits at 4,000 feet. Our entrance at 3,000+.

We are combining this fact with a bet on inflation and an investment on sustainability and alternative power (#3 and #4 above) and plan to move our farm off the grid so we can live in a healthier, wealthier, more independent way. Not all alternate energy is cost effective at this time…at current energy rates. I expect the rates to rise so am willing to speculate by investing in energy saving and producing capital now.

Here is the plan we are working on that enhances the value added aspect of our business (#1 above). We have some great home sites on the farm. Some have some great locations for solar, hydro and wind power.

Many of our meadows have southern views and are filled with morning and evening sun.

Our home has a complete southern exposure and was built with 13 inch concrete filled, styrofoam insulated, heat retaining walls.

The 12 large glass windows and doors let the sun pour in all day. Even when it is freezing outside you can nearly heat the house with a candle.

Other sustainability assets include wind potential in places on the land that are high, sunny and exposed.

Our vision for the farm is evolving like this…homes that can support themselves: …energy…food…and water…but connected to the world.

This allows one to work on an entirely integrated plan…harvesting and milling wood…to build houses and cabins on sites like this…that

These and other qualities also lead to many natural health opportunities so we have a complete opportunity to create opportunity from all five of the the “future is now” investing and business ideas above.

This plan is filled with value added potential. We can help our forest with sustainable logging.

The wood can be used for the cabins.

We can offer courses that teach people the logging, the milling, how to build the cabins.

We can teach people how to save via off the grid living and even help them obtain off the grid equipment. Plus we gain off the grid homes for our retreat center.

I expect this will make new avenues so our business can change and grow in the next five to ten years…just as Ecuador altered our life and business a previous decade ago.

This process feels right to us and we are proceeding.

Live Anywhere – Earn Everywhere

While the world is distracted by American politics, a more important power struggle is taking place.

If that struggle is lost what’s left of our privacy, the safety of our food supply, the control over our health, the safety of our money and even the sanctity of our opinions and thoughts could be lost.

Almost half of America’s voters rejected the postwar global economic order.  This has left a cloud of uncertainty over the U.S. and world economies.

Markets and social order can collapse at any time.

Shooters are on the rampage.

ISIS is mowing down riders on bikes.

We are no longer safe… in shopping centers, at festivals, even in the church.

Yet the bigger danger grows.   This struggle is taking place, right now.

You can read about tiny parts of this conflict daily in the news.   Most of the clash however is hidden from view.  There are horrible consequences hidden beneath the visible spin.

There is an association forming that can ruin our health care, nutrition and the environment.  A group that can control what you read on the internet, see over cell phones, watch on TV and what trends in social media.

Everything you write or say can recorded and be used  to control what you hear and read.

The warning shot, above the surface, is the merger between Bayer and Monsanto.  This union is horrible enough, yet it’s only the tip of the iceberg.

Seven companies are involved in a more sinister plot.

The momentum of this dangerous alliance has picked up faster than anticipated.

I began researching and preparing a report “Learn Anywhere, Earn Everywhere” when the Bayer-Monsanto merger was the big deal.   They are two of the seven firms involved in this almost invisible take-over of our food and medical services as well as the internet, cell phones and TV.

I started researching when I saw the hidden depths of this Bayer-Monsanto merger.  I was truly concerned and shocked because my research discovered that the consolidation of Bayer and Monsanto is not the biggest merger nor the most dangerous by far.

I miscalculated how much time we have.  I went to work on the report right away, taking my time to delve deeply, but even before I have finished the report, events have begun to heat up.   The pace of this hidden unification has increased.  Now another merger is taking place, far more destructive and the alliance has an incredible lobby program working to make sure that the deal goes through.

A triad of three huge concerns and four smaller ones with hundreds of billions of dollars have built one of the most formidable lobbying operations in Washington.  Nearly 100 registered lobbyists are already on retainer and they include former members of Congress.   One company in this heptagon is also the largest donor to federal lawmakers.

The donations we know of equal more than $11 million paid to 374 of the House’s 435 members and 85 of the Senate’s 100 members in this election cycle.

This deadly seven point affiliation is likely to snake into almost every part of our livelihood.

One part of the cartel will increase our dependence on modified food that can purposely increase our needs for pharmaceuticals manufactured and sold at outrageous prices by another arm of the group.

The organizations will know more about us than any other group in existence.  They will (in fact they already are) act as spies for the government.  This amalgamation will control what ads we see, the products we buy, listen into our phone calls and even monitor and influence what we see on TV.

Sadly most of the public will not even know that this fusion has taken place.  Life will appear to go on as normal.  They won’t even see the change as what’s left of their good life which could be drained away by corporate malfeasance.

This is where facts become truly scary.  Some of these very same companies have merged with other mega concerns to create a new American Dreibund (a Triple Alliance dominating the USA).   This new cartel has such power it can take control of your food, your medicine and even influence, if not control, what you read and the information you access for health and wealth.  Even worse, they can monitor everything you do and give it to others in government and business as well.

From a political point of view we cannot do much about this alliance.   The cartel has hundreds of billions of dollars and hundreds of lobbyists.  They are making their big move right now, to take advantage of the current political distraction.  They know that after an election politicians are willing to accept bad news because it will be forgotten in four years.

In addition their greatest enemy in the government has only a couple of months left as the head of the Federal agency that will fight this cartel.

Only a few people will know how to take advantage of the shifts created from the results of this alliance.

I was not surprised that my suggestion in the Ecuador car rental article “get a driver rather than rent a car  in Ecuador” caused some panic.

Beware those who try to separate Americans from their cars!  This caused one reader to worry so about the cost of cars that he wrote:

Hi Gary,  what about importing your own car, or buying one there?
From what you are writing, the living seems to be very inexpensive, that is until you want to travel on your own. Try that on $1000 month or a fixed income.
All that shines is not gold. Reading between your lines these past 3 months I have come to conclude that there are lots of “hidden” costs in living in this 3rd world country.

I have lived for decades in many similar countries, and even worse, however never have I encountered such car costs as you describe. These are by far the most expensive car rentals I have heard of.  Doesn’t make sense living there unless one wants to walk or take taxis everywhere. An independent person would be doomed to frustration.  No, thanks…this was the article that opened my eyes.

This reader jumped to some incorrect conclusions. The gist of the article was that people who visit Ecuador should hire a car and driver.

The car rental situation is quite different for a tourist than for someone who has moved to Ecuador, learned the system… knows the roads and is not trying to see the country in a limited  time period.

Many people who live in Ecuador have cars.  Cars are not that expensive…. especially new ones partly assembled in Ecuador.

Gas is really cheap ($1.50 a gallon) and mechanics very inexpensive.

We recently looked at buying a four wheel drive Land Rover Challenger in good shape for our hotel.  The asking price was $15,000.  But we wouldn’t drive it.

GoEcuador says: It is now possible to obtain a used car in good condition beginning at $4000.

Plus that reader says he is independent because he has a car?

He forgets the fact that this means he is very dependent on cheap gas… something he may not have for long.

In Ecuador, the cost of hiring a driver can be less then renting a car and may even less than owning your own car. The availability of drivers with cars can eliminate the idea that we become dependent on others if we do not have a car.

One small piece of technology altered the automobile driver equation… the cell phone. In Ecuador most people have cell phones.   A number of drivers we and many others rely on have cell phones.  A car is always just minutes away from a call… no parking… no insurance… no maintenance… no getting gas.

Another reader wrote:

Thank you!  We would purchase a locally manufactured ‘middle of the road’ (pun) vehicle.  But I’m worried about drivers, accidents, tickets, gringo-problems with the locals and the police as well as the various other road condition, speeders, etcetera other issues.  (We have both driven over 45 years in various countries with no tickets – I’m not worried about our driving.)  We plan to relocate to Ecuador – probably suburban/rural area (but near enough to a city with a bilingual school) so will need a car daily for commuting our daughter to school, shopping, and more.  How can it be affordable to take taxis all the time instead of owning a vehicle ourselves?  Please let me know how others do it.   Do you and Merri drive in Ecuador? Thanks.

These notes conjure several important points about change from living in Ecuador or anywhere abroad…  points that go way beyond cars.

These readers, like so many readers who contact me, projected the old American commuter ideal onto an imagined lifestyle into Ecuador.

Why?

This mental error is understandable.   We Americans are car junkies.

I am living proof.

Like many Americans I obtained my driving license on my 16th birthday.  Shortly after I found a job and bought my own car… a 58 Chevy Bel Air just like this.

That was a great car and I just about lived in it.  We boomers in high school were judged by our cars!

I initially carried the burden of the car mentality with me when I left the USA.  I have driven in some crazy places during my time… jungles… war zones… deserts… swamps.  We’ve had our car robbed in Nice … had fender benders in Djakarta and on roundabouts in London and Rome.  Merri had her car bombed in the parking lot of the Picasso Museum in Barcelona…along with everyone else’s car there. (Long live the Basques!) Plus I have had a couple of cars stolen and some serious smashes in the US.  I live with the effects of a broken back, whiplashed neck and busted knee from driving an Austin Healey Frogeye (see below) into an 18 wheeler truck .

So I have experienced the good and the bad of cars.

When Merri and I bought our first hacienda in Ecuador, the seller threw in a really great, old Land Rover… gray… perfect leather seats but so old it had only three switches… one for the lights, one for the windshield wipers and one that apparently did nothing.   You could (and we did) start that vehicle with a hand crank.  The heating and air conditioning system was a flap in front that you could either open or shut.

We loved that car and I drove it exactly once… from our hacienda to Calacali… about a hour ride with only 15 minutes on a paved road.

The rest of the time we had our driver drive us.  This provided one more job in a country that needs employment plus gave Merri and me time to talk… look at the scenery and not worry about parking and all the rest of the hassle that comes with driving.

That is the only one time I have driven in Ecuador in all these decades.

Now let me add… I have always been a driver.

When I lived in Hong Kong I had a car… a great little Sprite Frogeye. Like this…

I loved that car in Hong Kong but hardly ever drove it.  I took the peak tram, the Star Ferry, taxis… the trolley and even jumped on the bus from time to time.

Why?

Have you ever tried to park in Hong Kong?

Ditto for London. I had a number of cars… first a little MG Midget like this.

In 1970, I drove that MG from London to Rome with my wife and two children… one still in diapers… a mistake… having not learned about the luxuries of Eurorail.

Then I had an Audi… a Peugeot… a BMW… and a Triumph Spitfire.

Yet I rode my bicycle many miles through London traffic from my home is Chiswick to my office on Artillery Row near Buckingham Palace.  I was often stopped by the police and even ticketed for riding my bike on a short cut through Kensington Gardens.   I also regularly used the Tube.

Why?

Have you ever tried to drive in London?

Plus riding the bike every day eliminated having to drive the car to a gym… a double savings.

Here is a point about change that goes beyond cars.

Americans are car addicted because of the nature of America.

Americans need and are highly dependent on cars because everything is spread out,  gas has been cheap, there is little public transportation and labor is expensive.

This set of conditions does not apply in all countries.  Cars are an asset in the USA but they can be liabilities elsewhere.

Why in a time when the environment is at risk through pollution… energy prices are rising… and roads are becoming more and more congested… would one want to stick to a lifestyle that revolves around one car per person if that is not the most effective lifestyle?

The one car per person mentality is old thought.

We really need to move onto the new.

Due to high labor costs, Americans have become hooked on DYI.   Yet when we move to a country with great, low cost labor… it makes sense to take advantage of these conditions.  Everyone gains.

When we can do good, why not create a bit of employment and save time, energy and money… why not sit back and enjoy the ride?

Hundreds of my readers have moved to Ecuador.  Almost none have chosen to buy a car because they really are not needed in many places there.

In Cotacachi we walk. Our friends who have moved to Cotacachi report  losing weight, feeling better and having more energy… in part because they walk more instead of driving.

Taxis are very inexpensive.  Most trips around town are a dollar and they come quickly to a cell phone call.  Though Merri and I do not use the buses, many of our friends do. The system works well.  If we need to take a trip away from the village, we have a number of drivers who have excellent vans and cars who charge between $55 and $70 to take us wherever we want to go.  A ride is  available at any time night or day… with one cell phone call.  Usually on a long furniture shopping trip to many places nearby, we might spend $10-$15….plus we have the advantage of the driver’s help, no problems parking, etc.

We have eliminated the cost of the car… gas… maintenance…. insurance…. parking… security.

Many US and Canadian readers write to us asking about cars…. big refrigerators… washing machines and dish washers.  These are all products that have evolved from North America’s spread out, low energy, high labor cost, nationally distributed, highly preserved food lifestyle.

In many countries you do not need these expenses and burdens.  You can walk daily to the market and get great fresh food.  This is fun!

Why have a huge fridge?  Merri and I love visiting the market. We searched for the tiniest fridge we could find.  We live just like we lived in London for all those years.  Every morning out on the streets looking for THE perfect vegetables, fruits, etc. and then enjoying a morning coffee and back home with everything for lunch!  What fun!

Here’s the kitchen of one of our condo rentals.  Do you see a fridge?  It is tiny and hidden away. We amble to the food markets instead. Cotacachi market is just three blocks away and we enjoy buying our food fresh from our neighbors.

The market provides these bicycle carts. For 50 cents or a dollar a happy man will ride all your groceries home for you….and put them away if you like!

The food market is fun and we love having a hot fig and cheese sandwich for breakfast. Not a combination most would ever dream of. They are delicious but missed if you are driving your car though miles of traffic to get to the American style super market!

Why pay a premium for imported dishwashers and washing machines when you can have cheerful, happy people do your cleaning and ironing for you?  You save time, energy and create employment to help the poor.

Which makes more sense?  Spend extra money for a very expensive  imported washing machine that takes up space in your home… and requires effort on your part or spend a LOT LESS money letting these two cheerful mothers, Rosita and…

do your laundry and deliver your sparkling, ironed clothes to you?  I love all natural clothes but they do require startch and ironing…and here’s our delightful answer.

You save space, money and help the Rositas support their families.

There is another important point here.

You help the environment. One washing machine that serves 20 families is better on the environment than 20 machines serving families.

You can see how Car sharing is growing in Germany and car sharing is growing in Japan.

Car sharing is growing in these industrialized countries because labor is still dear.  In Ecuador you can car share with a driver!

Plus one more really important point.   With rising energy costs, why would any of us think that on a limited budget we can continue to have this wasteful high energy lifestyle?  Why would we even want our old wasteful high energy lifestyle?  Americans have been warned.  Four dollars a gallon gasoline can return.

In fact four bucks a gallon may be low.  In Europe gas can cost seven dollars a gallon.

This note is not about cars.

It is about change.

We’ll be seeing more and more change in our lifetimes… coming faster.

We can profit if we adapt to the change and take advantage of new circumstances by living in new ways based on the local conditions that surround us.

Those who try and stick to old ways in a new environment will lose opportunity and ease in life at best. They may even suffer… sometimes a lot.

Change means we may life differently than before.  Change means we may even choose to live in a country where we were not raised and born.  This change can enhance our lifestyle… improve our health…. relieve our stress… if we adapt and embrace that country for what it is and enjoy its unique attributes.

If we choose to leave one country… why try to reproduce what we decided we no longer enjoy? If you want a mini USA or another Canada in Ecuador… but on the cheap… I expect you’ll be very disappointed coming to Ecuador.

Ecuador is a great place to be… but it is Ecuador… not Canada… not the USA.

Think about the quote by Anatole France about change: All changes, even the most longed for, have their melancholy; for what we leave behind us is a part of ourselves; we must die to one life before we can enter another.

Through change we may lose the one car per person lifestyle… but gain stronger legs… healthier lungs and cleaner air.  We may not be able to jump in the Chevy, go to the levy and drop off the laundry, do the banking  and get a Big Mac on the way… but in the change we can eliminate our fear of the meter maid.

Plus that ride can still be provided by a wonderful knowing person… just one cell phone call and minutes away.

Do not get me wrong. I still have cars… three right now in fact… all in the US, a Honda minvan for long drives and our old Suzuki and a conservative Dodge pickup for use on the farm.  Conditions warrant each.

Yet I am thinking about creating bio diesel from the farm when change brings the day that gas is not so available or cheap.

We have no car in Ecuador and have never missed one for a second.

If change is bringing a time when the daily one person per car commute must pass… Ecuador is a great place to get started.  For car sharing with drivers, taxis, buses and yes walking… Ecuador is a good place to be.
