Pumpkin Pie and a Health Tip

Nature provides foods suited to THE climate, when they are best for you.  Here are two healthy holiday eating tips.

One such food, recommended for autumn and winter eating, is pumpkin.  Fortunately, this time of year, farmer’s markets and stores are filled with pumpkins.

west jefferson farmer's market

West Jefferson, Ashe County Farmer’s market in the autumn

Pumpkins are a tasty source of vitamins and minerals, particularly beta-carotene, vitamin C, and potassium.  They can also help prevent hardening of the arteries. Plus they are readily available in the autumn as evidenced by the thriving harvest we always get at the farm.

You can learn more about the health benefits of pumpkin at a web page that describes “Pumpkins and Health”. (1)

A recipe Merri and I cook and enjoy is a low calorie pumpkin custard.  This is delicious, healthy and filling, perfectly suited for the fall.  It’s similar to pumpkin pie but much better in several ways. We cut out most of the evaporated milk (we replace the need for liquid with lemon or lime juice instead) and sugar (we increase the spices and add a bit of stevia on top without cooking with maple syrup and honey).

Here is our “Healthy Pumpkin Custard” recipe for four.

15 ounces fresh, cooked (or one can) pumpkin
3 ounces evaporated milk
Juice of one lemon or lime
2 eggs
Cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, ginger, allspice & nutmeg to taste
Mix this all up and bake in oven at 350 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes.

Serve topped with a bit of honey, brown sugar or maple syrup.

This is a delicious treat that is healthy and has only 110 calories per serving (plus sweetener).

Pumpkins are rich in Beta-carotene, which is found in many yellow, orange and green vegetables and plays an important role in good health due to its antioxidant properties.  Pumpkin is believed to have possible benefits for BPH.  There are also cancer reduction benefits because pumpkin seeds are unique in their composition of antioxidant nutrients.  There is evidence of decreased cancer risk in association with pumpkin seed intake. Pumpkin seeds, pumpkin seed extracts, and pumpkin seed oil have long been valued for their anti-microbial benefits, as well as anti-fungal and anti-viral properties.   Pumpkins provide mineral support.  They are a very good source of the minerals: phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, and copper and a good source of the minerals zinc and iron.  The diversity of antioxidants in pumpkin seeds that makes them unique in their antioxidant support.

Modern science has found that many benefits can be derived from pumpkin, pumpkin seeds and oil, so it is not surprising that  pumpkin has been a popular holiday food for centuries.

Secret of the Hogberry

Gain Amazing Health Benefits with the Hogberry

More than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer.  Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear.  Body fat.

Studies showed that those who were most active have a 25% lower chance of developing cancer because reduced body fat is possible pathway to lowering cancer risk.  Time Magazine has some good information on the relationship between exercise and reducing cancer.  Have a look below if you want to research more deeply (1).

intermittent fastng

Graph showing benefits of intermittent fasting.

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.  I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat and cancer?   Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.   Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation.  Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

The way to avoid this storage of deadly toxicity is to keep stress down, while digestion and detoxification pathways remain good.

Burn Fat to Burn Toxins

When you burn fat not primarily for weight loss, (though you will lose weight) but for purification, you can turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy.   Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins.  As the toxicity drops, the nervous system has reduced stress and will naturally burn fat instead of sugar.

Intermittent fasting is one way to get the body to burn fat.  There is a way of eating that helps reduce weight, improve energy and purify the body as it returns to a state of natural health.

This is a simple easy way to improve and restore feeling good, but works best when combined with better nutrition, moderate exercise and a purification program that helps make sure that the body is not overwhelmed with too much purification at once.

This is why I have written a short report entitled “The FAST Way to Better Health” that features one special tea so an intermittent fasting routine becomes doable and enjoyable.

The Key is in the Hogberry

Intermittent fasting is guaranteed to work, if you have even reasonable nutrition, moderate physical activity and stick with it.  The problem is in the sticking.  When the brain is hooked on metabolizing sugar it can be very demanding.   When we try going an extended period without a sugar, the brain will have a hissy fit and demand that we eat or drink something sweet or starchy or alcoholic.

Sticking through a fast just does not work when the brain pulls out its bag of tricks, from sweet whispers (just one chocolate won’t hurt- but it will!)  all the way to chills sweats and dizziness.   Intermittent fasting, without help, can require enormous discipline that most of us cannot maintain long enough.

I know, I tried intermittent fasting several times and failed.  Then I accidentally stumbled across the secret of the Hogberry that not only stops hunger but more importantly speeds up the process of switching from sugar metabolism to fat metabolism AND assists in the purifying process.  Once I tried using this support for the pancreas (among other things),  intermittent fasting became satisfying and enjoyable.  I am passing 45 days in this routine, and the steady energy just gets better and better.  I am not minding the reduced weight and better fitting clothing either!

“The FAST Way to Better Health” explains how intermittent fasting is not real fasting.  One does not stop eating with an intermittent fast, not even for a day.  You learn why this is such a healthy way to lose weight and detoxify fat cells to reduce risks of cancer, heart disease diabetes and senility.

More important you learn how to feel better almost from the very first day.  Reduce stress, gain smooth steady energy without 10:30am and 3:00pm  droops. Find out how to avoid being hungry right after you eat and how to make the cravings for sweets and junk food all but disappear.

I will send you this report “The FAST Way to Better Health” that reveals the secret of the Hogberry, FREE when you order my Shamanic Natural Health reports described below.

This is the only way to attain this report.  Intermittent fasting can make your life better. It works best when you use the nutritional, exercise and purification tips outlined in these three reports.  As with all my reports and courses, satisfaction is guaranteed or your money back.  I want to be sure  that the information in “The FAST Way to Better Health” works for you.  The valuable knowledge you’ll gain in these reports works better when the nutrition, purification and exercise reports are combined so I have made a special offer.

I have created three shamanic health reports are about:

#1: Nutrition

#2: Purification

#3: Exercise

In this special offer I want to send you a special report on how you can gain better natural health with the hogberry along with three other reports that reveal secrets of health and longevity.

Avoid the Secret Chargemaster

Few places can destroy health and ruin a lifetime of savings faster than a hospital.  We are at risk from pocketbook surgery and the incredibly dangerous “Secret Chargemaster”.   See below why chargemasters are normally kept secret and how to gain protection from their abuse.

Modern American health care is under pressure.  Despite horrendous costs, the system is faltering.  At times the care is more dangerous than the illness.  For example hospitals are the worst place to have a heart attack.  The University of North Carolina, did a study and found that 40% of the patients who had attacks in the hospital died before being discharged.  (The study compared that with only a 4% death rate for those who had heart attacks outside the hospital.)

Plus it was recently revealed that medical endoscopy scopes in hospitals were infecting patients with deadly drug-resistant bacteria.  The facts about this had not been previously disclosed.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that hospital-acquired infections alone kill 99,000 people each year.  Here is an even worse hospital mortality fact.

CDC Stats

The image above shows a report from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention.  Hospital-acquired infections alone kill 57% more Americans every year than all car accidents and falls put together.

Often, what patients catch in the hospital is worse than what sent them there.  Governments and health care agencies agree  – antibiotic resistance is a “nightmare.”  An antibiotic-resistant bacteria may be spreading in more hospitals than patients know.  About one in every 25 hospitalized patients gets an infection and a 2013 report from the Journal of Patient Safety showed that medical errors are the third-leading cause of death in the country.

Along with the risk of hospital acquired illness and medical errors, the second huge threat to our well being… is health care costs, especially at hospitals.  This is because of the secrets in the Chargemaster and the people who do not want us to know how much hospital costs have risen .  Motivations beyond our good health, like corporate greed, want to keep us in the dark about health care cost.

hospital bill

The hospital bill above is part of a story about a $110,000 infection and why hospital “Chargemasters” are often secret.  This story tells how one person with resistant devastating infection ran up a $110,000 hospital bill only to find that Medicare would only pay $2,300 from treatment of infection.

Secret of the Chargemasters

Being in a hospital can kill as well as cure.  There are odds on that.  What is more certain is that hospitals can kill our finances.

The ‘average’ cost of hospital care is rising because the leading hospitals are front runners in figuring out how to amass market power so they can  raise prices and decrease competition.  A codeine pill that costs $20 at a hospital costs 50 cents at Rite-Aid or Walgreens.  Hospitals have “chargemasters” a price list created by each hospital, that typically has more than ten thousand entries, so almost nothing — even an aspirin, a bag of IV fluid, or a visit from a physical therapist to help a patient get out of bed — is free.  However, those lists are usually secret.

Hospital Failure

The Commonwealth Fund in its latest survey on overall health care ranked US healthcare dead last compared to 10 major countries.  Despite being worst, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, New York Times have all warned about huge, increasingly costly, health care changes.  There are enormous problems in hospitals and chances are they are going to get worse.

When it comes to health care, we may well be on our own.  The very people, institutions and establishments that  we should rely on may actually hurt rather than help our health.  Shamanic Wisdom accumulated over the millennia can fill the gap.

The way to escape the dangers of the high cost deteriorating health care system, is to not need it.  Declare health independence… and create natural good health.  There are dozens of simple, really low costs steps that can improve health… eating, purification, exercise, even the way we think and don’t think when we sleep.

Ancient shamanic wisdom from around the world can help us reduce our risks of poor health care and help us fight the ever rising costs.

For nearly 50 years my wife Merri and I have lived around the world and checked out just about every source on natural health care.  We have spent years living with natural health care insiders, and trying what they offered.

We took thousands of readers to Ecuador.  Many met the shamans there and we saw some health miracles take place (including a miracle with me!)

Since not everyone can go to Ecuador or travel the world, we have created three Shamanic Natural Health Care Reports that can help improve our natural health.  They are concise and to the point.  In 15 minutes the first report shows exactly how to start preparing for better health and more energy.

We do not have to depend on the health care and health insurance monopolies for better natural health… or cave into a healthcare system that can put us at risk and charge outrageous prices at the same time.

Our shamanic health reports provide information on how to use ancient health care systems to become more healthy –  self sufficient – providing our own good health.

The first report is “Sunski”, the Andean word for good eating, for maximum nutrition and purification.

We started the series with eating because so many of our readers have found the Andean shamanic nutrition helps them kick start their health with weight trimming.  Here is what a few readers have written to us:

These are typical notes I have received from readers.

*  “Hi Merri,  things have worked out well.  I am healthier than I have ever been, lost 32 pounds since arriving in Sept.  Bought a house and have finished the first level.  What an amazing place you have found”.  Thanks Phil – Ecuador

*  “We’ve decided to change our eating patterns since we came home because we so enjoyed our meals at the farm and how we felt physically.  Thanks so much. With love” JJ New – Chicago

*  “After eating all that delicious food I gained 3 lbs but it must be in muscle weight as my pants fit loosely!”  R Vickers – New Mexico

*  “The food was so delicious and I thought I ate a lot, but during the week I lost six pounds!”  WB Australia.

Good eating is the first step towards natural health. The first rule of good health is getting the correct nutrition.  The second step is purification of toxins and eating to avoid getting impurities in our body in the first place!

Sunski is a way to eat that strengthens and purifies as it stops adding toxicity from eating.  Yet Sunski is a delicious, healthy “self defined” cleansing process.  One lesson in Sunski shows how to correct a simple mistake that most of the Western population makes which increases the chances of adding and retaining weight by 84%.

“Sunski” combines lessons about healthy eating that we learned from years of working with ayurvedic health masters and then living with an Ecuador Taita Yatchak and his apprentices.

We lived, worked, farmed, cooked and ate with this Taita Yatchak for years while learning “Sunski”.

shaman

The “Sunski” report has been 50 years and millions of miles of travel in the making.

We’ve invested thousands of hours into learning the skills of health self-reliance and resilience, identifying the best foods and combinations and sifted through loads of seeming contradictions to get to the facts about “do it yourself” longevity and natural health.

But that wasn’t enough – not when our good health is on the line.  So we consulted dozens of top professions who know a lot about natural health.  We spoke with holistic MDs chiropractors, Indian Vidyas, Andean Yatchaks, and other self-reliant natural health experts who live this way every day.

Don’t let the simplicity fool you…  years of research went into these reports.

And we only kept the best of the best: this system is complete – and FAST to learn – so you can get started immediately.

We all need to stay out of hospitals and reduce our exposure to modern medical risks and costs.

Why re-invent the wheel?  Especially when time is NOT on our side.  We’ve already done the hard work for you pulling together the information so you can create better natural, good health.

Imagine… never worrying about what we eat ever again and reducing the risks of hospitalization and health care’s outrageous costs.

A few of the life balancing nutritional tips include how to:

#1: Eat a balance of fat, carbohydrates and protein.

#2: Eat combinations of food for ideal digestion.

#3: Eat clean organic food prepared and served by happy, joyful people.

#4: Eat in good spirits at the right times of day.

#5: Chew in the correct way.

#6: Eat purifying and satisfying meals.

#7:  Adapt eating habits that are suited to individual specific makeup and lifestyle and why such individualized nutrition is better than any specific set plan.

This report includes a complete list of EZ to use recipes that will immediately improve your short term energy… and your long term natural health – so that you never have to guess what foods you need (or rely on the health care establishment  to tell you the truth).

Here are a few facts and health tools you gain:

*  The single biggest constraint you’ll face in your eating habits  – and how you can eliminate it by adding two simple recipes to your Sunski system.

*  How to calculate exactly how much food you need so you don’t over or under build your nutritional plan.

Learn how nutritional secrets can help keep you out of the hospital.

These reports focus on how to have good natural health so you can remain independent and avoid costly medical care.  The second report looks at purification and detoxification.

The third report is about exercise… but not the type you would think.

Unlock the Mystery of Key Muscles

For example this third report unveils one exercise that is a nutritional trick  that has nothing to do with what we eat.  The trick is to energize and coordinate the digestive system by exercising a set of key muscles as we eat.  The body has a number of key muscles that regulate breathing, digestion, circulation, elimination and muscular motion.  The report  reveals an exercise you can do at the dinner table to energize these muscles which in turn coordinate every other muscle and organ in the body.  Eating in this way for example (most of the modern world does not) energizes just one key muscle that regulates part of our ability to burn sugars and fat.

Part of the report focuses on how to have financial balance in investing and business so you can remain independent.

The report looks at oxygenation, coordination, purification, energy boosting, education, occupation and relaxation.

Oxygenation-Coordination:  Learn how to gain extra oxygen with the Llama Walk.

Purification: We look at Andean purification herbs and purifying teas.

Energy Boosting: Eating balanced, correctly prepared organic food and drinking herbal teas designed for body type and body imbalances.

Occupation: Physical labor, suited to your body type and condition range from gardening and animal care to path building and clearing the woods.

Relaxation: Learn how Meditation, L-Thianine and Baroque Music enhance thinking and relieve stress.

Body Types Made EZ:  Learn how they cause and influence nine body types and their imbalances.  Discover seven easy ways to determine your body type and how to keep it in balance.

The life path altering effects from the weekend with you and Merri continue. Thank you again. I have begun to change my diet. Bless you!” – D.B. Connecticut

You are indeed a spiritual pioneer, blending disciplines to create tools and resources for success in this new land of opportunity.  Anyone who thinks this is just all about money is missing the real message: This is about life in its most profound implications.” – W.P. Australia

I want to thank you for the wonderful time. I travailed from California to hear you convey your knowledge in the way you do so well, and I wasn’t disappointed.  The amount of information in the sessions was almost overwhelming, but it’s exactly what I went to hear.” – B.R. California

The technical information I gathered was most not new to me, but I like to compliment you for putting it all in the right perspective and to make it very understandable to all.  What was at our opinion one of the most important gaining of these 3 days is the opening of the new world, this new circle of what you call ‘normal’ people! (I call us ‘not normal’ as a matter of respect to the majority.)  But as we know, all is relative and depends at the point of view of each, His spiritual mind and his opinion about the senses of our being.” – E.V. Florida

People who, among other things, are active and productive and creative and resourceful, whose word can be counted upon; People who realize that spirituality DOES NOT mean sitting in a cave contemplating your navel and weaving baskets, nor does it equate in the Western culture with living in abject poverty.  People who realize that abundance is not a dirty word. People who understand that we are here to ENGAGE life, not to submit to circumstances out of fear and ignorance and apathy; People who don’t just use the most current ‘buzz words’ so they can feel like they are part of the group, but who actually DO something… Builders. Thank you for showing up in my life.” – E.W. Nevada

How the Body “Eats Itself”

Recent Nobel Prizes reveal the importance of good sleep.

Three scientists were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discoveries about the life cycles.

Their discoveries advanced our understanding of molecular mechanisms controlling the circadian rhythm.

These discoveries included advances on how our cells recycle their content, a process known as autophagy, a Greek term for “self-eating.”  Disorders in autophagy is important in many diseases and in aging.

The research studied genes that control the rhythm of daily life.  They peeked inside our biological clock, helping “explain how plants, animals and humans adapt their biological rhythm so that it is synchronized with the Earth’s revolutions.”

The studies found that certain genes within cells create a protein that accumulates in cells at night, and then degrades during the day.

The decades long research revealed mechanisms that drive the cell’s clockwork.

Nobel Prize members noted:

“With exquisite precision, our inner clock adapts our physiology to the dramatically different phases of the day. The clock regulates critical functions such as behavior, hormone levels, sleep, body temperature and metabolism.”

The research also found that when the regulating gene mutated, the cell’s rhythm with nature is lost.

All organisms, including humans, operate on 24-hour rhythms that control sleep, wakefulness, blood pressure, heart rate, alertness, body temperature and even reaction time.  When the genes work properly the body has the highest chances of natural good health.

The protein the genes create is call PER. PER accumulates at night and is blocked during the day.  As the body eats PER during the day, the gene regains the ability to create more PER at night.

Their work was pivotal, the Nobel committee said, because the misalignment between a person’s lifestyle and the rhythm dictated by an inner timekeeper — jet lag after a trans-Atlantic flight, for example — could affect well-being and over time could contribute to the risks for various diseases.

Here is an Important Health Tip.

Numerous, ancient sciences of life, have long recognized  the importance of our natural rhythms and use the “As Above, So Below” principle. Incorporate the cycles in your daily habits and routines to help keep your inner biological rhythms in tune with nature.

Here is a tip contained in one of my three Shamanic Natural Health Reports.

Break everyday into two sets of cycles that relate to our natural rhythms.

These cycles relate to our movement (air), our physical being (water) and our digestive sensory processes (fire).

The biggest meal of the day is lunch, eaten at noon.

Here is the essence of the ancient concepts that promote timing of the life cycle and are being confirmed by modern science:

2am to 6am:  Air Cycle. This is time to start the wake up process. The mind is light, active and this is a good time to think, multi task and learn.

6am to 10am:  Water Cycle. Strength is increased. This is a perfect time to do physical activity…(with no injuries and yet a better workout).

10am to 2pm:  Fire Cycle. This is the time for digestion. High noon is the best time for the main meal of the day.

2pm to 6pm:  Air Cycle. The mind is light and active again. Study and do mental work.

6pm to 10pm:  Water Cycle. If you eat a heavy evening meal, this cycle will digest it. However if your evening meal is early and light, your digestive system will be ready to purify the pressures of the day.  If the body does not have to digest a heavy meal, this second fire cycle acts like an oven cleaner and burns up stresses and toxicities gained during the day, thus insuring a body that is not overweight.

10pm to 2am:  Fire Cycle. Best time for deepest sleep and a cleansing so we can start the wake up process and rise with a light and active body, mind and spirit.

These cycles are based on nature’s rhythm.

Live with these cycles and increase the odds of good health.

Integrate the tips when modern science confirms ancient health wisdom.

Feel better.

Have more energy.

Live longer.

And these tips are free!

Brave New Pill

Mankind can overcome the impossible.

We sent a man to the moon.

We could live on Mars.  Maybe harness the moon and the stars.

Build our own reality?

Yet we can never defeat the inconvenient.   When we have problems, as a whole, humanity always takes the seemingly, easy path.

When tired, most people take an upper.

When agitated, they take a downer.

Taking a pill to mask a symptom is convenient!

Aldous Huxley saw this fact in his book Brave New World where drugs weren’t just common; they were distributed en masse by the government.  In the book, Soma, a hallucinogen described as “the perfect drug,” all benefit and no drawbacks (like brain damage).

A Guardian article in its drugs and alcohol feature “Scientists predicts that a brave new world of brain pills” (1) is coming along.

The article in a drugs and alcohol feature said:  Why Not a Brave New World?  Drugs that work on the brain are already common – many people can hardly begin their days without the mind-sharpening effects of caffeine or nicotine.

A new report by leading scientists in the fields of psychology and neuroscience argues that, very soon, there really will be a pill for every ill.

“It is possible that [advances] could usher in a new era of drug use without addiction,” said the report by Foresight, the government’s science-based thinktank.

Launching the report, the government’s chief scientific adviser, Sir David King, said that brain-enhancing drugs developed to treat diseases such as Alzheimer’s were likely to find increased use among healthy people looking to improve their perception, memory, planning or judgment.

The article reviewed a menu of drugs already being used

Ritalin (methylphenidate) is used by students in an attempt to improve exam results and by business people to improve performance in the boardroom.

D-amphetamine improves memory.

Naltrexone is already used to treat chronic alcoholism and narcotic abuse. It works by blocking the pleasure receptors that are normally activated in the brain when people use the drugs

Propranolol, a beta-blocker, used sometimes by snooker players to calm their nerves.

Modafinil, treats narcolepsy, has been used by soldiers to improve memory and judgment.

The report said the widespread adoption of new brain-enhancing drugs was not without risks and would raise “significant ethical, social and practical issues.”

This poses two bigger problems.

Unknown side affects…

Who determines which drugs can be used and if they must… plus who profits monetarily from the decision.

Yet the rise of pills is likely because they are convenient.

A better way to maintain a clear mind and high energy is with good nutrition, exercise and a calm consciousness.

To this end Merri and I take several food supplements.  One we have endorsed is Vitality Force.

Recently a reader sent the manufacturer of Vitality Force this note.

Dear Kris, Thank You so much for VITALITY FORCE.

It took almost a month to reach us, due to Canadian customs, so my partner, and I have only had 3 days to enjoy it.

WOW… what a difference it makes with mental clarity & stamina.

We would like to order more now, as it takes so long to get to us.

Thank you so much for making this amazing supplement.

The processes of eating right, getting enough exercise and inflating our IQs are not particularly convenient.  Time, energy and good routines and habits are required.

The benefits though are free of the law of diminishing returns, without unexpected side affects and are under your control, not other’s hidden agenda.

Which Road to Follow?

We all have a path to follow.

Is your path calm and serene?  Or is it stuck in a traffic jam with a hurricane approach?

ft myers news-press

Evacuation from Irma in Southwest Florida (Ft. Myers News-Press image).

Merri and I lived in Naples for over 20 years.  Our house was less than a minutes walk to the beach (9 inches above sea level) so we know what it’s like to evacuate and wonder… “Will there be a home on our return”?

Today we are concerned about our children and grandchildren who are sitting in the storm, but there is a certain comfort knowing we are safe here in the mountains, able to help evacuees and in a position to help rebuild after any losses.

This message had been posted before Irma arose.

The timing could not be better because… sometimes we cannot avoid hurricanes and disasters in our lives.

The consequences of storms, earthquakes and disasters are some times hard to avoid.  This will create stress but there are ways to make sure that such tension does not become a habit.

road

The road to our North Carolina Farm.

Should life cause unrelenting stress?

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in five adults in the U.S. has a mental-health condition.

Take for example, the case of Madalyn Parker, a 26 years old web designer who has been living with depression and anxiety.  When she had panic attacks during business meetings she excused herself just long enough to go to the bathroom, take a Xanax and return to the gathering.

Really… do we have to take Xanex breaks just to get by?

There are better ways to spend our days.

gary-scott-farm

Avoiding stress is one reason to live in Smalltown USA.  I know.  Here is the entrance to our house.

The story of  Madalyn Parker comes from a Wall Street Journal article, “Some Companies Want You to Take a Mental-Health Day” (1).

Big business knows how bad they are to their employees. Some are trying to help.

According to the article: Ernst & Young, has an initiative called “r u ok?” that encourages workers to check in with each other and offer support to those who might be struggling.

Boston software company HubSpot Inc. has taken a different tack. It offers its roughly 1,800 employees flexible hours and unlimited vacations so they can take time off without feeling forced to explain why, says Katie Burke, the company’s chief people officer.

Give me a break!

Business are so bad to their employees that they are now forced to provide staff with mental health breaks?

No wonder there is an opioid crisis.

I come across so many examples… of how big business treats its staff inhumanely.  I was recently talking to the employee of a large automaker.  He started with the firm right out of college.  After 40 years of work he feels like he has a target on his back, because of his age.  The company can plug in a younger employee at half the wage.

An employee of a big environmental firm told me, “You always feel like you are standing on a trap door.”

One friend who is high up in a huge chemical concern said that he tells all new employees, “Plan to be here three years. Build your CV and then move on”.

What happened to loyalty?

Companies chew up employees.  They discard  people the second they find a cheaper deal.  Employees watch their back instead of having the company’s back.

In-depth research by the Rand Corp., UCLA and Harvard Medical School found that nearly one in five workers face a hostile or threatening environment at work including bullying and sexual harassment.  The study called the percentage of workers who found the workplace grueling and stressful, “disturbingly high”.

No wonder the Dilbert comic strip has had such success online and in 2,000 newspapers.

These problems go beyond the job.

Work may be a rat race.  Getting to that stress and back can cause as much stress as the work.

Merri and I figured this out long ago and started living in small towns.  After living in a couple of the most crowded cities in the world- Hong Kong and London, we used technology to help us move to Smalltown USA.

traffic

Road leading to my Hong Kong home.  “Bye Bye island’, I said.

traffic

Road leading to our London house.  “Sorry old chaps, we are outta there”.

First, we made Naples, Florida our base…  when it was a small town, but as it grew we left for North Carolina.

traffic

merrily-farms

Road leading to our North Carolina home.

Advances in broadband and cell phones allowed us to make this move.  Our fiber optics connection here is better than in most cities.

We spent winters in uncrowded villages in Ecuador.

Finally, we traded Ecuador for Mount Dora in Central Florida and can have just about anything that urban city dwellers have even though we live in secluded nature.

florida

X marks the rooftop of our Florida home.

Our website and messages are about how we live, what we do and how you can benefit from our experience.  We live where our environments reduce rather than add to stress.

You can live without the traffic, the hectic pace, filthy air and the noise.

City living simply can change you… for the worse.

A Times article “Stressed in the City: How Urban Life May Change Your Brain” explains.

The article says: City dwellers tend to be more stressed and have higher levels of mood disorders and psychotic illnesses such as schizophrenia than those living in rural or suburban areas. And now researchers say they have uncovered certain changes in brain activity that could potentially help explain why.

In an international study, researchers at University of Heidelberg and the Douglas Mental Health University Institute at McGill University report in the journal Nature that people who live or were raised in cities show distinct differences in activity in certain brain regions than those who aren’t city dwellers.

Those who currently live in the city, for example, showed higher activation the amygdala, the brain region that regulates emotions such as anxiety and fear.  The amygdala is most often called into action under situations of stress or threat, and the data suggests that city dwellers’ brains have a more sensitive, hair-trigger response to such situations, at least when compared with those living in the suburbs or more rural areas.

A huge trend is snowballing, fueled by technology and by simple economics.

Big business knows that stress is costing them big time.  Policies to reduce stress in the world, don’t just reflect employer benevolence.  A 2015 study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry showed that major depressive disorders alone cost companies $78 billion in lost productivity in one single year.

Businesses know that costs go up and profits go down if employees don’t show up to work because they struggle with depression, anxiety and stress.

Improved roads and especially great advances in rural broadband make it possible for businesses to develop work forces outside stress-filled cities.

The public is catching on as well.

One reader outlined the shift when he wrote me this note (before Irma).

Gary, I thought your letter, “How to Rise From the Fall” was spot on.  In it you mention the move toward Small Town America. I have written you in the past explaining my view that there will be a migration from coastal areas toward higher ground in the not too distant future, in particular out of South Florida.

We were in a small community a couple of weeks ago in preparation for our move there this coming November and spoke to a number of furniture sales/design consultants. They are all telling me that the migration out of South Florida has now begun in earnest. But rather than moving because of rising water levels the migration is due to congestion and crime. People want out of the jungle that South Florida has become. They are looking for just what you describe, a more peaceful life in a smaller community.  Keep up the good work, you remain ahead of the trend.

That’s what we need… a trend we can grab onto that provides opportunity and reduces stress.

Look for areas of opportunity as the maddened crowd and businesses move out of big cities into Smalltown USA.

Look for ways to gain the Smalltown benefits yourself.   Have a slower pace, eliminate traffic.  Breathe fresher air.  Drink purer water.

Live better, earn more, spend less.  That’s the essence of being a Pruppie.  See how to make your life better, in this way, below.

Why Blueberries are Cool

Internal cooling is an important natural health activity during the summer.  Fortunately keeping your cool during the dog days of summer can be pleasant and easy.

One way I keep our cool in the summer is by taking morning walks, barefoot in wet grass and picking fruit we have planted along the side of our house.  We have strawberries, raspberries, black raspberries, blackberries, blueberries and grapes.

Here is a great cooling health tip.  Keep some red (not white) grapes in the freezer.  Whenever you feel hot and bothered or angry (a sign of internal heat), suck a frozen red grape.

During the summer, eating cooling foods helps keep our body in balance and berries are an important source of cooling and nutrition.

merrily-farms

Our berry patch next to the house.

Right now blueberries are in season.  When our garden does not supply enough, we buy extra.

Blueberries are the most powerful antioxidant fruit.

A single half cup of blueberries doubles the normal antioxidant intake and has anti-aging effects. Blueberries are associated with the prevention of cancer, brain damage, high cholesterol and age-related health diseases.  Blueberries also have other important vitamins and minerals that are extremely beneficial to natural health.

Blueberries are very low in saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium.  They are an excellent source of Vitamin C, Vitamin K and Manganese.

However, pesticides on non-organic on grapes and blueberries can outweigh the advantages.  According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more than 50 pesticide residues cling to conventional blueberries.  Blueberries are one of the dirtiest fruits and one of those supermarket fruits where it pays to go organic.  Grapes are also pesticide challenged. Organic is the best way to go.

I buy organic blueberries and grapes when I can but, do not trust the word organic anymore.  I pay for more hoping that the label means that the fruit has less poison on it, though I am pretty cynical about this.

Organic or not, I also soak my blueberries and grapes, in fact all the fruit and vegetables we buy, in Purely Green.

In addition I increase the size and yield of my own organic blueberry crop by spraying the bushes throughout the growing season with BioWash.

Are You Affected by This Epidemic?

One of the worst health epidemics in our civilized world is a little talked about ailment called CD.  This health risk runs the age gamut from school kids to folks who are retired.  Almost everyone is at risk if they are not already affected.

CD is a precursor to numerous diseases including; diabetes, heart disease and some cancers.  CD leads to poor cognitive function, mood disorders, sleep disorders, obesity, morning droops,  daytime sleepiness, reduced school performance, reduced driving reaction time and is known to lead to substance abuse.

Fortunately CD has a free and easy cure.

When we lived in Ecuador, we purchased a remote hacienda, Rosaspamba.  For years we lived and worked there with an Andean yatchak and his apprentices to learn health secrets of natural health.  This is where we learned some vital lessons about CD.

rosaspamba

Rosaspamba is remote.  X marks the house.

rosaspamba

Zoom in and you see the house alone.  We had electricity, no hot water.

rosaspamba

Our only electricity came through the cigarette lighter plug in our Land Rover.  We would charge our laptops there.  The lack of electric lights helped us learn about CD.

One unique factor about Ecuador is that there is almost no seasonal deviation in the length of daylight.  The sun rises at 6am and sets at 6pm.  It’s easy to maintain a smooth Circadian cycle, especially where there is no electricity and no artificial light beyond a wood fire.

We found that when the sun set at 6pm we were beginning to feel more relaxed and were often asleep by 8pm.  Like wise as the horizon lightened, even before dawn, we were awakening at about 4am.  This routine of sleep from 8 or 9 pm till 4 or 5pm left us feeling energized and we have maintained this routine over the decades since.   That lifestyle and routine was eradicating CD.

CD is short for the health imbalance created by disruptions in the Circadian cycle called Chronodisruption or (CD).

John Douillard explains Chronodisruption in an article entitled “Recalibrate your internal clocks” (1) at Lifespa.com

Here are excerpts from this article: In evolutionary terms, we have spent very little time living with and depending on artificial light.  This dependency has been found to negatively affect our circadian clock, our connection to the light/dark, daily, and seasonal cycles.

Every cell in the body is linked to a biological clock that turns certain functions on and off as day turns into night and summer transitions into winter. A new study has found that artificial light in our homes can cause our circadian clocks to be out of sync with nature’s clock.

Being out of sync or disconnected from the circadian rhythms is called Chronodisruption (CD).

The article tells about the importance of melatonin in our natural health cycle.  Melatonin is considered the sleep hormone that is linked intimately to the light/dark cycles.  When melatonin rises, the body prepares for rest and we get sleepy.  When melatonin falls, we are energized and the body prepares for activity.   Research has shown that people who have CD start to have rising melatonin levels about 2 hours after waking up.  This is a time when melatonin levels should have dropped.  Yet with CD they start to rise again.  This leads to mid-morning droop and poor performance at work, while driving and even at play.   This explains the need for a morning coffee break and shows how we are forced to be active at a time when the body is geared up to sleep.

This continual forcing of the body to do what it is not prepared for can create all types of dangerous health imbalances such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

The Lifespa.com article also shared this interesting insight: The researchers measured the effects of living without any artificial light for one week during a camping trip. During the camping trip, they went to bed and arose on their own, but there were no sources of artificial light except for a campfire. They measured the melatonin levels after a week of camping, and then compared them to their melatonin levels after a week of normal life using artificial light, televisions, computers, etc.

The results were amazing.  After just one week of living in sync with the natural light/dark cycles, the group went to bed and woke up an average of 2 hours earlier. The mid-morning melatonin surge did not happen. Their clocks were reset!

By naturally getting to bed earlier, the campers all naturally got up earlier and were able to enjoy the early morning natural light. The sun’s mornings rays are filled with blue light that suppresses melatonin and are, thus, capable of resetting the body’s circadian clocks.

This is what we learned about Circadian cycles at Rosaspamba.

The ancients believe that every day consists of two, four hour intervals….air, water and fire cycles each.

2am to 6am:  Air Cycle. This is time to wake up. The mind is light, active and this is a good time to think, multi task and learn.

6am to 10am: Water Cycle. Strength is increased. This is a good time to do physical activity and exercise.

However, if your evening meal is early and light, this second fire cycle acts like an oven cleaner and burns up stresses and toxicities gained during the day.

10pm to 2am: Fire Cycle. Best time for deepest sleep.

We and everything around us are systems composed of cycles.  When our cycles are in tune with the Circadian cycle… we live in a more comfortable… lowest stress… most efficient, energetic and longer way.

Electric lights and late nights, plus the internet and TV, especially the 10pm or 11pm news are the nemesis of a healthy Circadian cycle.  Fortunately, the Lifespa.com article article also provides a simple strategy to reset that cycle.

Try some of these simple home strategies to help reset your circadian clock:

Take a weekend and turn off the Wi-Fi, lock away your cell phone, turn off all the lights and use candles or/and a fireplace for evening light.  Get outside for a hike or walk as much as possible. Go to bed in the early evening at the first sign of sleepiness and get up in the morning when your eyes first open. Get outside and take a morning walk as you watch the sunrise. Enjoy!

During the week, turn off the house Wi-Fi after supper. Dim the house lights and avoid phones, televisions or computers. Go to bed reading a book by candlelight.

On your next camping trip, don’t miss the great opportunity to reset your clock.  Don’t turn on your phone and avoid flashlights.  Make torches and a campfire.  Enjoy!

Consider getting outside and performing a yoga sequence, such as the Sun Salutation at sunrise and sunset.

Chronodisruption is one of the most prevalent epidemics in our modern world for how can we live without electricity?  Fortunately, the reset that eliminates CD is easy.  A change in our rhythms can remove the ailment completely with a cure that’s so simple it has been taught to us in a rhyme:

Early to bed, early to rise.  Makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.

Try it and you’ll feel better and be healthier as well.

Health Shape Up

Having good natural health has more benefits then we can imagine.

No insurance plan will fix the problem of the Western world’s system so called “health care” as long as hospital, pharmaceutical and medical costs are sky high.  High medical costs mean high insurance premiums ultimately paid by us, either as medical costs, insurance premiums or tax.

Plus the Western way of life discourages health care.  From the minute we start to eat, to breathe, to drink, we are bombarded with poor nutrition, discouraged from walking and physical labor and led into lifestyles that deprive us of restful and health building sleep.  Western commerce favors a “disease management” system using stress that keeps us alive just enough so we can earn the amount required to pay for our insurance and co-pay and drugs.

Merri and I focus on having natural health instead.  We exercise daily, grow some of our own food and have learned the best way to be sure we get eight solid natural hours of sleep each and every night.

We also take several food supplements, one being “Athlete’s Best Premium Omega-3 Plus” formula and the other  “Athlete’s Best Vitality Force” Formula, an L-Argenine formula.

When I saw a health and fitness contest that offered a 90 day supply of both these formulas, as prizes, I decided to let you know.

How to Gain Longevity Strength

Exercise for longevity goes far beyond strength.  Here is an excerpt from “Smooth Moves”, our third report about shamanic secrets that support natural longevity and health.

Heavy exercise is not required for good natural health and can actually be detrimental to longevity.   If your exercise time is limited, consider replacing muscular exercise with the other types of longevity exercises shown below.

Exercise Beyond Strength

All of the shamanic sciences view good health as a correct balance of various energies flowing naturally throughout the body.

Most ancient health and longevity disciplines contain numerous routines aimed at creating good inner health, flexibility and energy rather than muscular strength. They include exercise of:

Glands

Smooth muscles (involuntary non-striated muscles)

Nerves

Spine

Cardio vascular system

Lymph system

Voluntary skeletal muscles

A good description of gland exercise is in “The Book of Internal Exercise – Complete System of Self Healing” by Stephen T. Chang.

Chang outlines seven routines that cascade energy into the glandular system.  Each step helps the next step.  When the glands are in order, the smooth (involuntary) muscles respond more effectively to exercise.  When the smooth muscles are strong, the cardio vascular system gains more from exercise and when the heart and lungs work right, the lymph cleans the system better so that exercise of the spine, nerves and voluntary muscles are more effective as well.

Chang’s book outlines how the seven glands are connected and how good health comes when each of these glands is energized and exchanges energy with the other glands in a balanced way.

dr chang chart

The Seven Gland System from Dr. Stephen Chang’s book, “The Complete System of Self Healing Internal Exercises”.

The idea behind the internal exercise philosophy is to start a positive glandular cascade.

Chang writes:

“Muscular bodies do not protect the body against disease-causing agents; internal organs do.  That is why, in Tao of Revitalization, the emphasis is upon motions that are natural to the inclinations of the body and that energize, heal, and regenerate the entire body through “exercising” the internal organs.  But if one must do external exercises, one must also do internal exercises to recover what is depleted.

“These seven glands may be visualized as vessels that are attached to one another by a series of arteries or tubes. Each vessel (gland) is dependent upon all the others for its supply of liquid energy.  If vessel A (the sexual glands) is supplied with liquid this fluid will slowly disperse through the arteries to the remaining six vessels.  Similarly if vessel C (the pancreas) were to be drained excessively of its fluids (through a leak of some sort) each of the other vessels would give up a portion of their supply to replenish an equilibrium within the system.  This is similar to how energy flows within our bodies.

“A state of weakness or susceptibility to disease arises when one system or in this case a gland, is for any reason deprived of energy.”

chang

For more on the Chinese approach to exercise, you can order Chang’s book, The Book of Internal Exercises at Amazon.com.

One way to balance the glands is with sound.  Sound exercises treat the energy processing centers as tuning forks.

Different frequencies cause different centers to resonate and energize different organs or glands.

For example, the root energy center controls the adrenal gland.  The solar plexus energy center controls the pancreas.

There are exercises to balance the glands via the energy processing centers by chanting through the musical scale with each note matching an energy center.

The root energy center is energized by the note C and the chant LAM.  The solar Plexus energy center is energized by the note E and the chant RAM.

Sound… as seemingly as simple as OM… can give our exercise routine a kick start.

If the glands are energized first, then other exercises accomplish more.  Sound has profound effects on glands and their corresponding systems by creating specific hormones.  The pituitary gland is the first to respond to exercise.

The pituitary secretes several hormones but the most important is the human growth hormone (HGH).  This stimulates the the body to increase bone, muscle, etc. but also stimulates the thyroid and adrenal gland and so on.

One way to view this duality is that beginning with glandular exercise, we start from the bottom up whereas skeletal muscle excursive starts from the top down.

There are many ways to start this balancing act, but many of the ancient disciplines start with the glands first.

This is why many mornings, I listen to the sound of Om as I exercise.  You can listen to Om by clicking here Om.

Secret of the Hogberry:  The Health Tip Almost No One Knows

More than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer. Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear. Body fat.

Studies showed that those who were most active have a 25% lower chance of developing cancer because reduced body fat is possible pathway to lowering cancer risk. Time Magazine has some good information on the relationship between exercise and reducing cancer. Have a look below if you want to research more deeply (1).

intermittent fastng

Graph showing benefits of intermittent fasting.

Fortunately, there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.

When you burn fat not primarily for weight loss, (though you will lose weight) but for purification, you can turn on the body’s detox fuel (2).

The Key is a Tea

Then I accidentally stumbled across the secret of the Hogberry and a special tea that not only stops hunger but more importantly speeds up the process of switching from sugar metabolism to fat metabolism AND assists in the purifying process. Once I tried using this tea (which supports the pancreas among other things), intermittent fasting became satisfying and enjoyable.

Temper the Resilience

Resilience is armor against the changes in life that wear us out.   Life is neverending change so we need ever lasting qualities that help us continually adapt and progress rather than be beaten down.

gary-scott-moon tags:"2012-5-5"

Moonset at our Florida house.  Here is why I often write, sitting outside at dawn, while watching the moon.

This is Part IV in a series about the 13 qualities of resilience.  See links to Parts I through III below.

A cool temperament is one of the foundations of resilience.  A temperamental style that is fluid and easy, as opposed to erratic and brittle, acts as a facilitator of social involvement, adaptability, coping, belonging, and resilience.

The world is heating up literally and figuratively.   More and more of our lives are directed by hotheads.  We need to remain chilled and stay cool.

Ayurved, the Indian science of life and the Andean shamanic wisdom look at health as a balance between three physical elements, motion (air), material (water) and digestion (fire).  Both (late night news and Tabasco) should be avoided.

Reducing fire in a heated world is beneficial for health because fire rules digestion.  When out of balance, we do not digest any information correctly, whether we get it it from what we eat, feel, hear, smell or see.  Watching the fiery news at 10pm gives us as much (or more indigestion) as a hot meal covered in Tabasco.

Fire also rules beauty because its imbalances are reduced by the body through the skin.  Too much fire creates rashes, acne, blemishes, poor skin luster, dull hair and much more.  The fire reducing trick below not only enhance health, but also help clear your skin and make it glow.

Here is a trick that can help you reduce the fire.  Instead of watching TV at night, try Moonbathing.  This can be romantic as well as healthy.

Often when the sun sets in lavender glory, Merri and I take a walk in the cool evening air.  We’ll hike into the woods, start a camp fire to warm the cool night air… and listen to the katydids as we bathe in moonbeams.

moon

Merri and our son, Jake, during a moonbath.  This is cool… and cooling.

We soaked in the moon’s creamy reflections filtered through the forest.  Then we stroll in the moonlight back to the house glowing its welcome in the night.

gary-scott-home

Our Blue Ridge front porch at night.

This may sound even crazier than eating watermelon for good health, but try it.  I find the moonlight to be not only beautiful but calming.

The foundations of this idea… though less romantic than the pure beauty of moonlight are imbedded in both ancient and modern scientific terms.

Moonlight impacts the area of the body called, in Ayurved, the crown chakra.   The Andean indigenous wisdom acknowledges this area at the top of the head as a key to balancing all the Rios de Luce (Rivers of Light) or main energy processing points in the body.

This center is located in the top of the head, is associated with the brain, and the entire nervous system.

The subtle frequency of moonlight is soothing and calming… which helps mitigate fire imbalances.

The crown chakra is said to affect what one experiences when in the deepest part of their being, as a point of consciousness glowing with intelligence called “White Light”.

Metaphysically, this is considered the most subtle element of which the entire physical universe is created.

This fits nicely with a science if we view the endocrine system as a series of frequency receptors.

The crown chakra is believed to regulate the pineal gland which connects the endocrine system with the nervous system and converts nerve signals from the sympathetic system of the peripheral nervous system into hormone signals.

The pineal is involved in several functions of the body including, secretion of melatonin and conversion of nervous system signals into endocrine signals.

The popular science website has an article entitled “Moonlight Magic” (1) by Alan M. Petrillo that  tells how a successful businessman spent $2 million to build a 50-foot-tall moonlight collector, a 30-ton array of mirrors called the Interstellar Light Collector and invited scientists nationwide to put his device to the test.

The article says: Biologists at the University of Arizona have expressed interest in using the collector to study moonlight´s effects on plant growth cycles but not yet on people. If nothing else, the collector offers a unique research opportunity.

Although moonlight is reflected sunlight, its frequency and spectrum are unique and, so far, irreplicable, which makes it difficult to examine in a controlled, clinical fashion. “It´s a hot area to understand the spectral effects of light on human health and physiology,”  says Michael Gorman, a University of California at San Diego Biopsychologist who has studied how hamsters react to light.

However, we choose to view it… romantically as the soft glow that washes a moonlit path… as an ancient wisdom or a scientific reaction in the pineal gland.

Moonbaths can help cool us and balance our fire, water, air equilibrium.

Longevity in Lettuce and Sunshine of Thought

“The sun always shines somewhere”.

This was a main theme in my 1970’s book, “Passport to International Profit” and remains equally true today.  Our lives are driven by forces we often cannot see. Even if visible they cannot always be understood.  Plus we cannot change most of what what we do understand and see.

Is this the root of optimism?

Fortunately, we have power in the bright side.  Optimism helps us see the silver linings so we can adjust, adapt and evolve.

Optimism is the only practical attitude and is related to longevity.   A recent 11-year study (1) of more than 2800 men and women between the ages of 56 and 72, found that those who were more pessimistic were 2.2 times more likely to die of heart disease than those who were less pessimistic.

Pessimism increases health risk including stroke, poor arterial health, heart failure and coronary heart disease.

We can live longer and accomplish more when we live a more wholesome, peaceful, optimistic, giving, loving, joyful, calm, nature-based lifestyle, which is the key to a happy heart.

How can we be optimistic when so much bad stuff seems to be going down?  The solution is to change our lifestyle so we have better nutrition, more good exercise and deeper sleep.

This message shares three simple ideas that help us sleep better.  Chronic lack of sleep can increase the risk of most degenerative diseases and anxiety and depression, cancer, impaired cognitive function metabolic difficulties, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, elevated blood pressure and more.

Today’s stress levels are 24/7, with little end in sight for many folks. Such chronic stress has a direct impact on sleep.  According to a 2001 scientific poll, 38% of Americans received a solid 8 hours of sleep. In 2009, that number was reduced to just 28%.  Sleep is so important for good health that one study linked getting 7-8 hours of regular sleep each night to a reduction in mortality from all causes.

Lack of sleep creates a negative self reinforcing downward spiral.  Sleep creates higher stress levels and elevated cortisol.  These factors create more stress, which raises cortisol levels higher, which disturbs sleep patterns even more.

Here are three simple steps that can break this spiral.

#1: Reduce digestive overload at night.   Everything that our senses process is a form of digestion.  Eat lightly. Turn off the news and violent or negative emotion inducing shows. Put down stimulating books.

#2: Go to bed before 10pm.  The body has natural rhythms connected to the sun.  Sleep is most natural from 9pm to 5am.

#3: Drink warm milk with lettuce.  Researchers have found that when bioactive peptides in milk are taken before bed, the improvements in sleep are remarkable: (2)

  • Promotes deeper sleep
  • Supports more restorative sleep
  • Induces relaxation at the level needed for sleep
  • Supports anxiety that disturbs sleep
  • Improves numerous stress markers

Even better, drink the raw milk that does not have added hormones, chemicals and antibiotics.  Unnecessary homogenization and the wrong type of pasteurization also reduce the benefits of milk.  An alternative to raw milk when it is not available is non-homogenized, vat pasteurized, chemical, antibiotic and hormone-free milk.  This is available in many health oriented grocery stores.

Why cook with lettuce?

This tip was given to me by an Andean yatchak and who rarely explain why, but a bit of research provided an explanation about how lettuce can bring sleep.  Lettuce contains an opium-like substance called lactucin that has sedative and analgesic properties.  Lactucin has been called “Lettuce opium”.   It is a latex, lactucarium and physically resembles opium as a white fluid and can be reduced to a thick solid.  The Egyptians refined it.  Refined lettuce opium was sold as a drug in the United States in the 1800s.

Lettuce cooked in milk creates a one-two knock out punch of the bioactive peptides and lactucin.

Like milk, lettuce is not straight forward.  First, commercially grown lettuce involves a lot of pesticides.  If you use store purchased lettuce, I recommend organic lettuce with a good soaking in Purely Green as explained in “Food Purification With Purely Green Clean”.

We find growing our own lettuce fulfilling and fun and enjoy our own organic lettuce.

Normally we grow lettuce, beans, peas, squash, radishes, raspberries, grapes and figs as well as our citrus, but lettuce after radishes, is the easiest and fastest to grow.

Another solution is Wild Lettuce Extract.  Different varieties of lettuce have varied amounts of lactucin.  One plant, Lactuca virosa, often called wild lettuce is in the Lactuca (lettuce) genus and has an especially high concentration.  Wild Lettuce is related to common lettuce and is also called bitter lettuce, laitue vireuse, opium lettuce, poisonous lettuce, tall lettuce, great lettuce or rakutu-karyumu-so.

Amazon.com offers Wild Lettuce Extract.

Because this is a concentrated powerful product, consult with your doctor before taking wild lettuce extract.

Dr. Oz recommended Wild Lettuce for insomnia at his website (3) and added these precautions. Do not use wild lettuce extract if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You have prostate enlargement (BPH).
  • You have an eye condition called narrow-angle glaucoma.
  • You are allergic to ragweed, marigolds, daisies or related herbs.
  • You are scheduled for surgery in the next two weeks.

Hawaii Farms safety information says:  Keep out of reach of children. If you are pregnant, nursing or taking any medications, consult your doctor before use.  Discontinue use and consult your doctor if any adverse reactions occur.  Excessive consumption may impair ability to drive a motor vehicle or operate heavy equipment.

If you have any concerns about using a concentrated product, stick to boiling lettuce in your milk.

Hawaii Farms suggested use of their Wild Lettuce Extract: Shake well before use. 20-30 drops, three times a day or as directed by your practitioner.

I have not found any research on the amounts of lettuce (or extract) to use in milk.  My suggestion is to start with a minimal amount, just a few drops.  If you step up the amount, progress very slowly, a drop or two at a time.  Discuss this with your health care professional and when you find a level that works stick with that the minimal amount.  Medicine is dose and less is usually does more.

These three tips can clear away the clouds of a downwards health spiral and bring a person up into the sunshine of positivity and natural good health. Reduce digestive loads at night, be in bed by 10pm and drink boiled milk and lettuce. This makes it possible to sleep deeply at night.  Waking refreshed, feeling better and thinking more clearly makes one more optimism and that optimism can be a foundation for better health and greater wealth.
