Special Freedoms


Merri and I always celebrate special freedoms in May, but this May is golden and extra special for us. 

This May is unique in our lives because my global investing and business adventures began, five decades ago, when on May 1, 1968 I left the USA and arrived in Hong Kong May 2, 1968.

Here is my my first passport  and the first stamp issued May 2, 1968, allowing me to stay in Hong Kong until June 2, 1968.

I arrived in Hong Kong in the night, the tropical air so soft it was a velvet mist.  Thick evening scents in the fragrant harbor and mellow insects purring in rhythm with the cacophony of the great city!  What a an exotic adventure.

Kai Tak was Hong Kong’s airport then and being American born and bred, I knew nothing about investing aboard.

I was 21 years old and had no idea how that trip would lead me throughout Asia for almost ten years and onto business and investing in Europe, California, England, Isle of Man, Florida, The Dominican Republic, North Carolina and Ecuador.

In the last 50 years there has been a lot of change in our freedoms, and our goal at this site has been to share ideas that enhance three basic qualities of real freedom.

#1: The first basic quality of real freedom is natural health.  None of us can be truly free until we wrest ourselves from the grip of the expensive, big pharma fueled, health care system.

Good health is the most valuable asset of all.  I know because there are some moments, always remembered.  Peak experiences. Never forgotten spots in our existence that become crossroads that forever dictate the direction of our lives.  Sharing such a memory about good health from 30 years ago, may help you gain more freedom and wealth now.

Warm fogs swept in from the South China Sea and hung like a humid blanket in the air.

The green, freshness and cacophony of birds brought us here each morning.  Amahs that stretched on bent iron pipe handrails, ancient wrinkled men carrying caged sparrows and all types of early risers moved like shadows against the verdant forest in their motions of Tai Chi.

Me?

I jogged. 25 years old, this was the day when divorce papers were served and I also learned I was broke.

Working from the age of 21 for a new hot company my stock options made me a paper millionaire at age 24.  This unexpected wealth created bad spending habits and without the sense to sell, this portfolio was nothing but paper that became worthless.  Plus the ambition and my month-at-a-time tours to Asia had ruined my marriage as well.

So that day I stumbled, more than jogged, wondering what would happen now!  Everything seemed gone and for the first mile or so, I was just running and afraid.

The second mile absorbed me.  The self-pity and fright began to fade.  During mile three I began to sweat and the trauma literally evaporated.  Finally by the fourth mile I was taking stock.  My two kids were smart, strong and already used to my being away.  My soon-to-be-ex had the house, two cars, the boat, all the furniture and the 14 apartments we had managed to buy.  They would be okay.

So what about myself?

On the fifth mile I analyzed my position… No cash, no way to pay next month’s rent and no job. I  was thousands of miles from home.  Most of my clients were unhappy campers focusing their anger on the only Guello (foreign devil) who had not fled the city (me).

Yet as one foot plodded in front of the other, there were several things I realized that I did have.  Energy and the ability to work.  I had my good health.

I jogged along thinking about my many wealthy customers who had tons of cash and gobs of assets, but were mostly diseased, exhausted and consequently perpetually afraid.  If anything went wrong in their business, banking or the economy and politics, they were doomed.  They could not build again.  Life for them was just the paper they had already accumulated.  They were always bound up by that because they feared they could never last out tough times or rebuild.  They were trapped by their wealth and rotting lifestyles.

Suddenly over the last five miles I felt extremely rich and free!  That was the moment when I realized the basis of real freedom is good health.  Money can come and go, but if we are physically fit, with stamina and good energy we can always rebuild wealth.

That’s the moment I have never forgotten and over the past 40 + years I have kept a continual watch for new ways to be stronger, more flexible, in better shape and more immune from disease, in my global travels.

This search for health, vitality and longevity is one of the reasons why Merri and I moved to Ecuador and lived with an Andean shaman in a remote Andean hacienda for over a year.

Having lived with the indigenous there, Merri and I learned that good health and longevity come from easy, but special exercises, good nutrition and good sleep so our bodies are fit and strong and our minds clear.

#2: The second quality of real freedom is the ability to earn through service.  So many promises, purchasing power of money, savings, pensions, health care, social security, financial security, privacy, have all been broken so many times that no promise made by big business or big government can be trusted.  The only true form of wealth is to have some value, to be able to serve (or produce) in a profitable way.

A multi dimensional micro business brings freedom as it redesigns your lifestyle by bringing profit, fulfillment and  peace of mind, through doing what you love.

The way I maintain freedom and continual lifestyle reinventions is to “Go Try Things”.

I started trying things in Hong Kong 48 years ago.

Then I moved onto Fiji and after a decade found “New Things” living in London.  While conducting London real estate tours, I spotted distortions in the Isle of Man that led to an Isle of Man business.  Years of real estate tours helped me pick up unimaginable profits… because I tried new things.

However Britain’s gray winters soon drove me to the sun.  Merri and I found ourselves in the sun watching sun rays sparkle on the emerald prisms of cool, spring fed pools in Naples Florida and the Dominican Republic where we found more “New Things”.  We conducted Dominican real estate tours but continued to self publish as well.  Then in the process of trying new places and new things, 20 years ago we stumbled onto Ecuador.

We continue to “Go try things”.

Our business has evolved over 50 years from Hong Kong to London to Europe to the Isle of Man to the Dominican Republic to Florida to North Carolina to Ecuador and back to Small Town USA. 

While in London in the 1970s, I wrote my first book, “Passport to International Profit”.

One chapter in the book was about the “Concept Conversion Trick” and how it creates the “Soil Defense Syndrome”.

Here is an excerpt from that chapter:

“The Concept Conversion Trick begins when people agree on a good concept for working and living together.  The people go to work and if the concept is good they will create a paradise.  The government gives them a flag and a song. Then the government pulls the trick.  The government convinces the people that the flag and song are important.  Then while the people are busy watching the flag and singing the song, the government replaces the concept with a set of ever increasing written rules and regulations administered by bureaucrats and backed up by a police force.

“This trick trades people’s individual freedoms for a shiver up the spine when the song is played the piece of cloth is waved.  The Concept Conversion Trick turns spirit into matter.   Like trading love for a beautiful plastic doll.  When the trick has been pulled and the dust settles, the people realize too late what has happened.  Anyone who steps out of line is called unpatriotic or even criminal.  He is swatted down by the bureaucracy or police force, crushed with overwhelming power or made an example of so others will tow the mark ‘for the good of society’.  All this is done in the name of public interest.”

If this writing sounds prophetic having been written over 40 years ago, it was not.  A simple review of any previous great society shows that this trick was part of its evolution.  Like the Roman Empire, things may get better for a while, then worse and then better again.  In the long term, as societies age, they lose their original vibrancy and life.

That book began my self publishing career because I was fascinated by how societies differ, yet are so much the same.

This is how our business continued to evolve, trying things of interest and fascination to us.  Not once did business turn out as we expected… but always there was some success… happy customers…. good deeds…. great service… profit… fulfillment and adventure all originating from just trying new things or doing old things in new ways.

We live in a fortunate era.  Throughout most of history, life expectancy and requirements of work meant that the most experienced sector of the work force was no longer physically able to continue.  In our high tech environment we have a chance to create their most important pinnacle career at a time when previously we would have retired.  This is the first time in mankind’s history when the value of our experience is worth more than the cost of getting it.

Today we have a global income with a self publishing micro-business with readers around the world, but run from our current homes in Smalltown USA.

Self Publishing has created exactly the lifestyle we desire with a farm in North Carolina, orange groves and home in Florida.

#3: The third quality of real freedom is to have a mathematically based financial information system that repeatedly reveals a diversified selection of good multi currency investment values.

Slow, Worry Free, Good Value Investing

A golden rule of investing is “there is always something we do not know”.  Investment ideas might have some connection to truth, but never contain the whole truth and nothing but the truth.  Every investment is based on approximation.  Investments rise and fall in value, at least temporarily. The fluctuations create  stress, worry and fear, three of an investors’ worst enemies.  These emotions cause the “Behavior Gap”, a trait exhibited by most investors, that causes them to underperform any market they choose.  The behavior gap is created by natural human responses to fear.  The losses created by this gap grow when investors trade short term under stress.

Pifolio – The Pi Model Portfolio

Lessons from Pi are based on the creation and management of the Primary Pi Model Portfolio.  The Pifolio is a theoretical portfolio of MSCI Country Benchmark Index ETFs that cover all the good value markets using my (almost) 50 years of global experience and my study of the analysis of  Michael Keppler.

Our analysis begins with Keppler who continually researches international major stock markets and compares their value based on current book to price, cash flow to price, earnings to price, average dividend yield, return on equity and cash flow return.  He compares each major stock market’s history.

From this research, Keppler develops his Good Value Stock Market Country Selection Strategies.  His analysis is rational, mathematical and does not worry about short term ups and downs.

In my opinion, Keppler is one of the best market statisticians in the world.  Numerous very large fund managers use his analysis to manage funds such as State Street Global Advisers.

The Pifolio uses Keppler’s Country Selection Strategy to construct a diversified, risk-controlled, portfolio that invests in Keppler’s BUY rated stock markets.  The portfolio gives equal weighting to each BUY market.

To achieve this goal of diversification the Pifolio consists of Country Index ETFs.

Country Index ETFs are similar to an index mutual fund but is a share normally traded on a major stock exchange that tracks an index of shares in a specific country.  ETFs do not try to beat the index they represent. The management is passive and tries to emulate the performance of the index.

The portfolio does not contain any individual stocks because country ETFs provide diversification into a basket of equities in the country covered.

The expense ratios for most ETFs are lower than those of the average mutual fund as well so such ETFs provide diversification and cost efficiency.

This is an easy, simple and effective approach to zeroing in on value because little management and guesswork is required.  The Pifolio is simply  a diversified portfolio of good value indices.  A BUY rating for an index does NOT imply that any stock in that country is an attractive investment, so you do not have to pick and choose shares.  Investing in the index which is like investing in all the shares in the index.  All you have to do is invest in an ETF that in turn invests passively in all the shares of the index.

The original Pifolio began with 70% diversified into the following good value developed markets: Australia, Austria, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Norway, Singapore and the United Kingdom.

30% of the Pifolio was invested in Keppler’s Good Value Emerging Markets: Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Korea, Malaysia, Poland, Russia, Taiwan and Thailand.

To understand this ideas’ performance in real time, we invested $80,000 ($40,000 at a bank and $40,000 at a low cost online broker) to watch performance in real time.

The Pifolio is up 27.1% since we began…. almost exactly equal to the S&P 500.

Live Well and Be Free – 5 Global Earning Experiences

Global Earning Experience #1:  Lepers.  Our micro businesses have been fulfilling.  Merri started her international business in her 20s (long before she knew me) importing Italian clocks to the USA.  This earned so much ($80,000 in the first year) that she created other micro businesses helping orphans in the Yucatan and Haitian lepers (at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital) produce crafts she sold for them in the USA.

Excellent income ($80,000 in the 1970s was a lot of cash)…  incredible contacts… working with Dr. Larimer and Gwen Mellon who created the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Haiti… and enormous satisfaction.  Merri still cries over 40 years later when she tries to speak of the gratitude of the lepers and her time and life in Haiti.

Secret #3: These money making systems should be enjoyable and fun.  Sadly most people make money for the sake of making money.  Many spend their lives working, just to have a few precious hours having fun.  The most important fact about making and keeping wealth is that those who were richest absolutely love what they were doing.  Money is of secondary importance to their effort.  And as things are, this means they actually ended up making more money.

Secret #4: These money making systems need to be flexible.  No matter what the economy brings, your ability to make money should work regardless of inflation, recession or even depression.

Or do you love beautiful jewelry, coins, gems, real estate, furs, model railways, dolls, scientific equipment, war memorabilia, old and rare books, or whatever?  Do you prefer social subjects rather than objects?

Are you concerned with the environment or humanitarian problems, with crimes, war or poverty?  Would you like to help wipe these social problems out in the course of your business?

Are you a golfer? Do you love to travel? Why not make all kinds of money in a global business related to golf?

Would you like to help the world be a more spiritual place, help people get along better together?  You can do something good for the world, increase your income and live wherever you please in the process!

Whatever your passion you can learn how to earn by creating an international micro business based on it.  You can be international if you love to travel or not.  Regardless of your skills and position there is some approach that will work for you.

Take fishing, for example.

I am no great aquafarmer, but the numbers and lifestyle work on a small scale.  We pay about $3.50 a pound to stock the fish, they double, triple, even quadruple in size and we sell them at a local butcher shoppe for a modest profit.   This is not a big deal, but does generate income, helps attract guests to stay in our rental cabins, puts some great trout dinners on our table and is a thoroughly enjoyable part of my daily labor.  I need this to counter balance sitting in front of a computer.

Over a couple of months the fish grow… a lot.

We are lucky to have a perfect but natural place to raise the trout.  On busy holidays when our monster trout are in demand I have to work hard fishing at that pond.  Pity me!

Millions of people love fishing but don’t have a pond.  This does not mean they cannot be involved in fishing.  Here are just a few of many ways that others have profitably matched this passion with profit.

Two of my friends, John and Lou, grew up near me in the Oregon mountains.  They were outdoor adventure types and moved to Canada, where they homesteaded 1,200 acres on a trout-filled lake in mid British Columbia.  They built a fishing camp that attracts fisherman from around the world.

Duncan Kinderman on the other hand loved fishing and castles.  He bought a castle on the River Tay, a great Scottish salmon river, and offered time shares for fisherman from Britain, Europe and the US.

Another entrepreneur I know was from Montana.  His skills were in marketing so he sold fishing trips for fishing camps.  He attended rod and gun exhibitions, met owners of these camps and arranged to sell their fishing trips to the US, Argentina and even in Russia to fisherman around the world.

Ralph Kylloe on the other hand loved fishing and photography so he created the book, “Fishing Camps”, which was published by Gibbs Smith publisher. This allowed Ralph to travel across the country enjoying fishing camps as he photographed and wrote.

Steve Ambrose, another friend of ours, had family commitments at home so he set up a bass fishing business in Florida that served Americans, Germans, Canadian, Dutch and Belgians.  Later as his children grew, he used his client base to arrange fishing trips in Argentina.

Each of these people had provincial backgrounds and differed in age, situation and skills.  Their common link, the love of fishing, led each to a global micro business.  Each was able to blend a unique nature and set of skills to develop a global business that surrounded them with fun, like minded fishing souls.

Also, imagine what an international business means to your world travel.  Every trip you take can be tax deductible!  You can honestly write off every trip that is related to your business.  Every journey becomes a research oriented adventure and a TAX DEDUCTIBLE EVENT. 

For example if you have your own business you can gain $12,976 by using two vehicles for business because  IRS Form 4562, which is filed by proprietorships and corporations, contains spaces for up to six vehicles.

There are similar benefits by having a second home office defined in IRS publication 463 and IRS publication 587.

These are huge tax benefits that can be gained when you have an international, at home,  micro business.

A Touch of Health


Here’s some thoughts on health change that can make your life better.

The New York Times article “The Disappearing Doctor: How
 Mega-Mergers Are Changing
 the Business of Medical Care” (1) shows three ways  that health care may change.

Big corporations — giant retailers and health insurance companies — are teaming up to become your doctor.

Critics of retail clinics argue that patients are given short shrift by health professionals unfamiliar with their history, and may be given unnecessary prescriptions.  But researchers say neither has been proved in studies.

“The quality of care that you see at a retail clinic is equal or superior to what we see in a doctor’s office or emergency department,” said Dr. Ateev Mehrotra, an associate professor of health care policy and medicine at Harvard Medical School, who has researched the retail clinics. “And while there is a worry that they will prescribe antibiotics to everybody, we see equal rates occurring between the clinics and doctor’s offices.”

There is a huge trend taking place.  Big hospital groups are expanding.  Primary care practices operated by MDs are contracting.   Long hours and low pay make the old model family practice unattractive for many physicians.  The big groups see big money in this shift and now employ 43 percent of the nation’s primary care doctors in 2016.

There are numerous health care models emerging.

Urgent care is already well established.  This model has emerged. Parents who once brought their children to a primary physician for simple concerns, an ear infection or strep, now go to urgent care centers.

Additional models include:

#1: One large New York venture based health system offers virtual consultation at any time.  By using sophisticated computer systems, patients (who pay $200) to join, get a a half-hour visit with physicians every time.

#2: Numerous huge organizations are venturing into primary care.   Walmart is working with Humana, to use the Walmart stores to deliver medical care.

These big companies would increase profits from prescriptions generated by doctors at the facilities they own.  Data mining would help them market more specific health and they would begin in areas where they have the most clients.

There are also businesses looking to create their own health care model.  Amazon, JP Morgan and Berkshire Hathaway have joined forces to develop some sort of health care strategy for their employees.

Apple recently decided to open up its own clinics to treat employees.

The articles says: Other companies are offering their workers the option of seeking medical care via their cellphones. Investors are also pouring money into businesses aiming to create new ways of providing primary care by relying more heavily on technology.

No one knows which model (or models) will emerge but it likely that each model will rely less on personal interaction between patient and doctor. Such loss reduces the power of authority figures, words and touch.

Modern human language is amazingly supple.  We can use a limited number of signs to communicate infinite numbers of meanings.

Even more important perhaps is the fact that we can use this power to transmit information about things that do not exist.   Humans dominate the animal world because we can cooperate with shared imagination.

Nations for example, do not really exist.

The dividing line between Canada, the USA and Mexico, for example, are figments of human imagination.  Yet look at the energy we expend defending these myths.

Though unreal, mythical structures are strong enough that many will die for the idea.  This power is built on an hierarchy that derives power from an agreement of imagination authority.  For example the concept of democracy gains power from ideas such as “all men are created equal… a vote counts…. there is a rule of law… leaders represent and look out for the interests the people… elected representatives know better than the people, etc.

History suggests that these democratic ideals may work well short term, they rarely survive the tests of time.

Most societies also agree that healers are authority figures in the hierarchy, a belief reinforced by giving healers specialized knowledge and the powers of word and touch

Touch is a powerful, biological tool that exerts itself from the moment life begins.      

A review of research, conducted by Tiffany Field, (2) a leader in the field of touch, found that preterm newborns who received just three 15-minute sessions of touch therapy each day for 5-10 days gained 47 percent more weight than premature infants who’d received standard medical treatment.

There are studies showing that touch signals safety and trust, it soothes. Basic warm touch calms cardiovascular stress. It activates the body’s vagus nerve, which is intimately involved with our compassionate response, and a simple touch can trigger release of oxytocin, aka “the love hormone.”

According to “Role of the Vagus Nerve at the Neural-Immune Interface” (3) shows how a caring touch can modulate the nervous system, especially the vegas nerve which in turn strengthens the immune system.  Regulation of immune system activity by the central nervous system plays an important role in both physiological and pathological conditions.  This is shown by several studies demonstrating that the vagus nerve represents one of the key brain structures participating in monitoring immune system activity.

In a study by Jim Coan and Richard Davidson, participants laying in an fMRI brain scanner, anticipating a painful blast of white noise, showed heightened brain activity in regions associated with threat and stress. But participants whose romantic partner stroked their arm while they waited didn’t show this reaction at all. Touch had turned off the threat switch.

Anglo Saxon cultural conditioning has already eliminated a great deal of touch.

A study by psychologist Sidney Jourard, observed how many time friends in different parts of the world touched one another as they conversed in cafés.

In England, the two friends touched each other zero times. In the United States, in bursts of enthusiasm, we touched each other twice.

But in France, the number shot up to 110 times per hour. And in Puerto Rico, those friends touched each other 180 times!

Our litigious society and the growing awareness of incorrect touching are likely to reduce the frequency of the human touch.   This is good when touching is inappropriate.  But research has revealed that we lose a lot psychologically and physiologically when we hold touching back too much.

A doctors word is also a powerful healing tool.

The interaction between a patient and health care provider create a profound effect on healing due very much in part to the placebo effect.

The fact that the placebo effect is tied to expectations doesn’t make it imaginary or fake.

Studies show that actual physical changes occur with the placebo effect. For instance, some studies have documented an increase in the body’s production of endorphins, one of the body’s natural pain relievers, based just on what a doctor tells the patient.

There is a relationship between how strongly a person expects to have results and whether or not results occur so a Doctor’s encouragement or discouragement, can improve or reduce healing.

What we can expect is… less personal care.  Whatever happens chances are, the relationship between patients and doctors will continue to radically change.  One of the most powerful healers of all, the doctor’s touch, is being lost.

This shifts more of our health responsibility where it should be… to ourselves.  We need to care more for our health and avoid the dis-ease management system that uses the name health care.

There are  a few steps we can take to overcome the loss of words and touch in health care.

For example we can find a good massage therapist or chiropractor who has enough medical background and experience.  Their healing practices are based on touch and my experience is that these two professions are more willing to encourage and share time and what they have learned.

Another step is joining support groups where words are shared or join those focused on health… such as yoga or meditation groups.  These are places that are often filled with encouraging words.

Secret of the Hogberry

Gain Amazing Health Benefits with the Hogberry

More than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer.  Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear.  Body fat.

Studies showed that those who were most active have a 25% lower chance of developing cancer because reduced body fat is possible pathway to lowering cancer risk.  Time Magazine has some good information on the relationship between exercise and reducing cancer.  Have a look below if you want to research more deeply (1).

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.  I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat and cancer?   Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.   Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation.  Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

The way to avoid this storage of deadly toxicity is to keep stress down, while digestion and detoxification pathways remain good.

When you burn fat not primarily for weight loss, (though you will lose weight) but for purification, you can turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy.   Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins.  As the toxicity drops, the nervous system has reduced stress and will naturally burn fat instead of sugar.

Intermittent fasting is one way to get the body to burn fat.  There is a way of eating that helps reduce weight, improve energy and purify the body as it returns to a state of natural health.

Often, what patients catch in the hospital is worse than what sent them there.  Governments and health care agencies agree  – antibiotic resistance is a “nightmare.”  An antibiotic-resistant bacteria may be spreading in more hospitals than patients know.  About one in every 25 hospitalized patients gets an infection and a 2013 report from the Journal of Patient Safety showed that medical errors are the third-leading cause of death in the country.

Along with the risk of hospital acquired illness and medical errors, the second huge threat to our well being… is health care costs, especially at hospitals.  This is because of the secrets in the Chargemaster and the people who do not want us to know how much hospital costs have risen .  Motivations beyond our good health, like corporate greed, want to keep us in the dark about health care cost.

The ‘average’ cost of hospital care is rising because the leading hospitals are front runners in figuring out how to amass market power so they can  raise prices and decrease competition.  A codeine pill that costs $20 at a hospital costs 50 cents at Rite-Aid or Walgreens.  Hospitals have “chargemasters” a price list created by each hospital, that typically has more than ten thousand entries, so almost nothing — even an aspirin, a bag of IV fluid, or a visit from a physical therapist to help a patient get out of bed — is free.  However, those lists are usually secret.

The Real Wealth in Green


Green may mean money…. but has a natural health benefit even bigger than cash!

There is a lot more to the color of green that we should celebrate every day.

A good way to increase intelligence is to surround yourself in the greenery of nature.  Often when stumbling in my thoughts, I pack up my laptop and walk the couple hundred yards from our front door to the pond.

I find that the peace, quiet and calm of nature frees any clouds and stimulates my thinking.

Also there is evidence that going green increases longevity!

Nature deficit disorder shortens lifespan.  Researchers at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (1) found a strong correlation between living surrounded by greenery and longevity and mental health.

They evaluated more than 108,000 women all across America for eight years. There was a 12 percent lower risk of death for those women who lived in the greenest surroundings.  34 percent were less likely to die of a respiratory-related issue and 13 percent less likely to die of cancer.  The strong correlation also extended to mental health. Women living in the greenest environments were happier and less depressed.

Don’t wait for St. Patrick’s Day to go green.  Next time if you are feeling blue or angry and you are seeing red, get into nature.  You’ll feel better and odds are live longer if you do.

Secret of the Hogberry

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.  I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat and cancer?   Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.   Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation.  Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

The way to avoid this storage of deadly toxicity is to keep stress down, while digestion and detoxification pathways remain good.

Burn Fat to Burn Toxins

When you burn fat not primarily for weight loss, (though you will lose weight) but for purification, you can turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy.   Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins.  As the toxicity drops, the nervous system has reduced stress and will naturally burn fat instead of sugar.

Often, what patients catch in the hospital is worse than what sent them there.  Governments and health care agencies agree  – antibiotic resistance is a “nightmare.”  An antibiotic-resistant bacteria may be spreading in more hospitals than patients know.  About one in every 25 hospitalized patients gets an infection and a 2013 report from the Journal of Patient Safety showed that medical errors are the third-leading cause of death in the country.

Along with the risk of hospital acquired illness and medical errors, the second huge threat to our well being… is health care costs, especially at hospitals.  This is because of the secrets in the Chargemaster and the people who do not want us to know how much hospital costs have risen .  Motivations beyond our good health, like corporate greed, want to keep us in the dark about health care cost.

Secret of the Chargemasters

Being in a hospital can kill as well as cure.  There are odds on that.  What is more certain is that hospitals can kill our finances.

The ‘average’ cost of hospital care is rising because the leading hospitals are front runners in figuring out how to amass market power so they can  raise prices and decrease competition.  A codeine pill that costs $20 at a hospital costs 50 cents at Rite-Aid or Walgreens.  Hospitals have “chargemasters” a price list created by each hospital, that typically has more than ten thousand entries, so almost nothing — even an aspirin, a bag of IV fluid, or a visit from a physical therapist to help a patient get out of bed — is free.  However, those lists are usually secret.

Hospital Failure

The Commonwealth Fund in its latest survey on overall health care ranked US healthcare dead last compared to 10 major countries.  Despite being worst, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, New York Times have all warned about huge, increasingly costly, health care changes.  There are enormous problems in hospitals and chances are they are going to get worse.

Beyond Chelation Report

This message outlines how and why, in the 1960’s, due to strict OSHA regulations, the government curtailed a simple (and incredibly low cost) amino acid that can help improve cardiovascular systems, increase memory, improve vision, enhance vitality, expand energy and extend lifespan.

One year when we had a Super Thinking Course at our farm.  One of the course delegates was a doctor in his eighties.   He had the energy and looks of a much, much younger man.  When asked about his secret of youth he said his vitality was based on several factors.  A few of the habits  you would expect, such as good diet, sufficient exercise and plenty of activity in a strong, purposeful life.

Then he explained another secret of his youth and energy: chelation.

The youthful doctor told us he had been running the largest I.V. chelation center in the United States from Hawaii.  Hardening of the arteries is such a huge problem in our modern world that he was making a fortune.

How does Chelation Therapy work?

It is a largely hidden fact that the main blood vessel leaving the heart of a healthy 80 year old man has 140 TIMES more pathologic calcium in it that the main blood vessel of a healthy boy of ten. By means of chelation therapy, this unwanted calcium (causing a build up of vulnerable plaque, hardening of the arteries, and potential heart problems) is removed from blood vessels and put into water-soluble complexes (chelates), which are readily excreted through the kidneys. Clinical observations reveal, however, that the amount of calcium in bones is not affected by the removal of calcium in the arteries nor is it diminished by the use of EDTA chelation therapy.

What is EDTA and is it safe?

Chelation therapy (using the synthetic amino acid known as EDTA) has been a standard treatment for lead and heavy metal poisoning since World War II. In the 1940’s and 1950’s, patients taking EDTA chelation therapy for lead poisoning reported improved memory, vision, hearing and smell, and diminished leg and heart pain.  Since then nearly 1,000,000 patients with cardiovascular disease have been treated successfully. Further, EDTA has been used as a food additive for over 30 years, the average American consuming between 15-30 mgs in their diets daily.

Why was EDTA put on the back burners?

In the 1960’s, prior to the current strict OSHA regulations, workers poisoned by high levels of lead at their jobs were given EDTA tablets by their company doctors to excrete the lead. The government, wanting to get to the source of the problem, ordered this remedy to be curtailed and the working environment improved.  Because of this situation and with this order, oral EDTA chelation went into seclusion.

Why is Oral Chelation surfacing now?

How to Live 11.11% Longer


Do the math about longevity and sleep.

The figures are not all in yet for 2017 but it looks like Americans will see a declining life expectancy for the third year in a row.  This has not happened since the Spanish flu, 100 years ago.

Life expectancy is climbing substantially for residents of every other industrialized nation.  America is alone in this decline.  Life spans are dropping to levels seen in Mexico and the Czech Republic.

One big reason for this drop in life expectancy is the opioid crisis.

Another reason for statistically shorter lifespans is increasing long term sleep deprivation.

Many studies suggest that there is a strong relationship between sleep duration and longevity.  One study that followed over 21,000 twins lasted more than 22 years (1).  The research looked at sleep duration, use of sleep medications and quality of sleep.

The conclusion was that people who sleep less than seven hours or more than eight hours a night, have an increased risk of death by 17 percent to 24 percent.

The use of sleep medications increased the risk of mortality by over 30%!

Below is the longevity math of getting the right amount of sleep:

If you live to 80, that’s about average.  You get 700,800 hours.

If you sleep 6 hours a night that’s bad.  That’s 175,200 of sleep.  You get 525,600 hours awake.

You gain 20% more years above the average with good sleep.

If you live to 100.  You get 876,000 hours.  Sleep 8 hours a night.  That’s 292,000 hours of sleep.

You get 584,000 hours awake.

Good sleep gains over 58,400, 11.11%, more wakeful hours.  More importantly, those hours will feel better!  The hours are more refreshed… healthier, more balanced, alert, energetic and at peace.

Here’s three tips on how to sleep better.

According to Ayurveda, the body needs energy to settle itself down in order to sleep.  Without such energy, the nervous system may respond by continuously releasing stress hormones.  A person at this deep level of exhaustion may not have enough energy to settle their mind and, although tired, may stay wired and be unable to truly rest.

Avoid the evening news!  Why fill you head with adrenaline pumping negatives that keep your thoughts active and your heart pounding.  Mediate… or do some deep breath or a few stretches… or best, all three.

Eliminate caffeine and alcohol that can increase nighttime urination.  Avoid big meals in the evening.  They make the body work when it needs to rest.

Medicine is dose.  Sleep is the greatest of medicines.  When we get enough, but not too much sleep, chances are we’ll live longer… better and enjoy the extra time more.

Pumpkin Pie and a Health Tip


 

Nature provides foods suited to THE climate, when they are best for you.  Here are two healthy holiday eating tips.

One such food, recommended for autumn and winter eating, is pumpkin.  Fortunately, this time of year, farmer’s markets and stores are filled with pumpkins.

Pumpkins are a tasty source of vitamins and minerals, particularly beta-carotene, vitamin C, and potassium.  They can also help prevent hardening of the arteries. Plus they are readily available in the autumn as evidenced by the thriving harvest we always get at the farm.

A recipe Merri and I cook and enjoy is a low calorie pumpkin custard.  This is delicious, healthy and filling, perfectly suited for the fall.  It’s similar to pumpkin pie but much better in several ways. We cut out most of the evaporated milk (we replace the need for liquid with lemon or lime juice instead) and sugar (we increase the spices and add a bit of stevia on top without cooking with maple syrup and honey).

Here is our “Healthy Pumpkin Custard” recipe for four.

15 ounces fresh, cooked (or one can) pumpkin
3 ounces evaporated milk
Juice of one lemon or lime
2 eggs
Cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, ginger, allspice & nutmeg to taste
Mix this all up and bake in oven at 350 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes.

Serve topped with a bit of honey, brown sugar or maple syrup.

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.  I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat and cancer?   Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.   Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation.  Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

The way to avoid this storage of deadly toxicity is to keep stress down, while digestion and detoxification pathways remain good.

Burn Fat to Burn Toxins

When you burn fat not primarily for weight loss, (though you will lose weight) but for purification, you can turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy.   Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins.  As the toxicity drops, the nervous system has reduced stress and will naturally burn fat instead of sugar.

Intermittent fasting is one way to get the body to burn fat.  There is a way of eating that helps reduce weight, improve energy and purify the body as it returns to a state of natural health.

This is a simple easy way to improve and restore feeling good, but works best when combined with better nutrition, moderate exercise and a purification program that helps make sure that the body is not overwhelmed with too much purification at once.

Often, what patients catch in the hospital is worse than what sent them there.  Governments and health care agencies agree  – antibiotic resistance is a “nightmare.”  An antibiotic-resistant bacteria may be spreading in more hospitals than patients know.  About one in every 25 hospitalized patients gets an infection and a 2013 report from the Journal of Patient Safety showed that medical errors are the third-leading cause of death in the country.

Along with the risk of hospital acquired illness and medical errors, the second huge threat to our well being… is health care costs, especially at hospitals.  This is because of the secrets in the Chargemaster and the people who do not want us to know how much hospital costs have risen .  Motivations beyond our good health, like corporate greed, want to keep us in the dark about health care cost.

The hospital bill above is part of a story about a $110,000 infection and why hospital “Chargemasters” are often secret.  This story tells how one person with resistant devastating infection ran up a $110,000 hospital bill only to find that Medicare would only pay $2,300 from treatment of infection.

Secret of the Chargemasters

Being in a hospital can kill as well as cure.  There are odds on that.  What is more certain is that hospitals can kill our finances.

The ‘average’ cost of hospital care is rising because the leading hospitals are front runners in figuring out how to amass market power so they can  raise prices and decrease competition.  A codeine pill that costs $20 at a hospital costs 50 cents at Rite-Aid or Walgreens.  Hospitals have “chargemasters” a price list created by each hospital, that typically has more than ten thousand entries, so almost nothing — even an aspirin, a bag of IV fluid, or a visit from a physical therapist to help a patient get out of bed — is free.  However, those lists are usually secret.

Hospital Failure

The Commonwealth Fund in its latest survey on overall health care ranked US healthcare dead last compared to 10 major countries.  Despite being worst, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, New York Times have all warned about huge, increasingly costly, health care changes.  There are enormous problems in hospitals and chances are they are going to get worse.

How the Body “Eats Itself”


Recent Nobel Prizes reveal the importance of good sleep.

Three scientists were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discoveries about the life cycles.

Their discoveries advanced our understanding of molecular mechanisms controlling the circadian rhythm.

These discoveries included advances on how our cells recycle their content, a process known as autophagy, a Greek term for “self-eating.”  Disorders in autophagy is important in many diseases and in aging.

The research studied genes that control the rhythm of daily life.  They peeked inside our biological clock, helping “explain how plants, animals and humans adapt their biological rhythm so that it is synchronized with the Earth’s revolutions.”

The studies found that certain genes within cells create a protein that accumulates in cells at night, and then degrades during the day.

The decades long research revealed mechanisms that drive the cell’s clockwork.

Nobel Prize members noted:

“With exquisite precision, our inner clock adapts our physiology to the dramatically different phases of the day. The clock regulates critical functions such as behavior, hormone levels, sleep, body temperature and metabolism.”

The research also found that when the regulating gene mutated, the cell’s rhythm with nature is lost.

All organisms, including humans, operate on 24-hour rhythms that control sleep, wakefulness, blood pressure, heart rate, alertness, body temperature and even reaction time.  When the genes work properly the body has the highest chances of natural good health.

The protein the genes create is call PER. PER accumulates at night and is blocked during the day.  As the body eats PER during the day, the gene regains the ability to create more PER at night.

Their work was pivotal, the Nobel committee said, because the misalignment between a person’s lifestyle and the rhythm dictated by an inner timekeeper — jet lag after a trans-Atlantic flight, for example — could affect well-being and over time could contribute to the risks for various diseases.

However if your evening meal is early and light, your digestive system will be ready to purify the pressures of the day.  If the body does not have to digest a heavy meal, this second fire cycle acts like an oven cleaner and burns up stresses and toxicities gained during the day, thus insuring a body that is not overweight.

10pm to 2am:  Fire Cycle. Best time for deepest sleep and a cleansing so we can start the wake up process and rise with a light and active body, mind and spirit.

These cycles are based on nature’s rhythm.

Live with these cycles and increase the odds of good health.

Yet we can never defeat the inconvenient.   When we have problems, as a whole, humanity always takes the seemingly, easy path.

When tired, most people take an upper.

When agitated, they take a downer.

Taking a pill to mask a symptom is convenient!

Aldous Huxley saw this fact in his book Brave New World where drugs weren’t just common; they were distributed en masse by the government.  In the book, Soma, a hallucinogen described as “the perfect drug,” all benefit and no drawbacks (like brain damage).

A Guardian article in its drugs and alcohol feature “Scientists predicts that a brave new world of brain pills” (1) is coming along.

The article in a drugs and alcohol feature said:  Why Not a Brave New World?  Drugs that work on the brain are already common – many people can hardly begin their days without the mind-sharpening effects of caffeine or nicotine.

A new report by leading scientists in the fields of psychology and neuroscience argues that, very soon, there really will be a pill for every ill.

“It is possible that [advances] could usher in a new era of drug use without addiction,” said the report by Foresight, the government’s science-based thinktank.

Launching the report, the government’s chief scientific adviser, Sir David King, said that brain-enhancing drugs developed to treat diseases such as Alzheimer’s were likely to find increased use among healthy people looking to improve their perception, memory, planning or judgment.

Ritalin (methylphenidate) is used by students in an attempt to improve exam results and by business people to improve performance in the boardroom.

D-amphetamine improves memory.

Naltrexone is already used to treat chronic alcoholism and narcotic abuse. It works by blocking the pleasure receptors that are normally activated in the brain when people use the drugs

Propranolol, a beta-blocker, used sometimes by snooker players to calm their nerves.

Modafinil, treats narcolepsy, has been used by soldiers to improve memory and judgment.

The report said the widespread adoption of new brain-enhancing drugs was not without risks and would raise “significant ethical, social and practical issues.”

This poses two bigger problems.

Unknown side affects…

Who determines which drugs can be used and if they must… plus who profits monetarily from the decision.

Yet the rise of pills is likely because they are convenient.

A better way to maintain a clear mind and high energy is with good nutrition, exercise and a calm consciousness.

Merri and I lived in Naples for over 20 years.  Our house was less than a minutes walk to the beach (9 inches above sea level) so we know what it’s like to evacuate and wonder… “Will there be a home on our return”?

Today we are concerned about our children and grandchildren who are sitting in the storm, but there is a certain comfort knowing we are safe here in the mountains, able to help evacuees and in a position to help rebuild after any losses.

This message had been posted before Irma arose.

The timing could not be better because… sometimes we cannot avoid hurricanes and disasters in our lives.

The consequences of storms, earthquakes and disasters are some times hard to avoid.  This will create stress but there are ways to make sure that such tension does not become a habit.

Should life cause unrelenting stress?

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in five adults in the U.S. has a mental-health condition.

Take for example, the case of Madalyn Parker, a 26 years old web designer who has been living with depression and anxiety.  When she had panic attacks during business meetings she excused herself just long enough to go to the bathroom, take a Xanax and return to the gathering.

Really… do we have to take Xanex breaks just to get by?

There are better ways to spend our days.

Avoiding stress is one reason to live in Smalltown USA.  I know.  Here is the entrance to our house.

The story of  Madalyn Parker comes from a Wall Street Journal article, “Some Companies Want You to Take a Mental-Health Day” (1).

Big business knows how bad they are to their employees. Some are trying to help.

According to the article: Ernst & Young, has an initiative called “r u ok?” that encourages workers to check in with each other and offer support to those who might be struggling.

Boston software company HubSpot Inc. has taken a different tack. It offers its roughly 1,800 employees flexible hours and unlimited vacations so they can take time off without feeling forced to explain why, says Katie Burke, the company’s chief people officer.

Give me a break!

Business are so bad to their employees that they are now forced to provide staff with mental health breaks?

No wonder there is an opioid crisis.

I come across so many examples… of how big business treats its staff inhumanely.  I was recently talking to the employee of a large automaker.  He started with the firm right out of college.  After 40 years of work he feels like he has a target on his back, because of his age.  The company can plug in a younger employee at half the wage.

An employee of a big environmental firm told me, “You always feel like you are standing on a trap door.”

One friend who is high up in a huge chemical concern said that he tells all new employees, “Plan to be here three years. Build your CV and then move on”.

What happened to loyalty?

Companies chew up employees.  They discard  people the second they find a cheaper deal.  Employees watch their back instead of having the company’s back.

In-depth research by the Rand Corp., UCLA and Harvard Medical School found that nearly one in five workers face a hostile or threatening environment at work including bullying and sexual harassment.  The study called the percentage of workers who found the workplace grueling and stressful, “disturbingly high”.

No wonder the Dilbert comic strip has had such success online and in 2,000 newspapers.

These problems go beyond the job.  

Work may be a rat race.  Getting to that stress and back can cause as much stress as the work.

Merri and I figured this out long ago and started living in small towns.  After living in a couple of the most crowded cities in the world- Hong Kong and London, we used technology to help us move to Smalltown USA.

First, we made Naples, Florida our base…  when it was a small town, but as it grew we left for North Carolina.

Advances in broadband and cell phones allowed us to make this move.  Our fiber optics connection here is better than in most cities.

We spent winters in uncrowded villages in Ecuador.

Finally, we traded Ecuador for Mount Dora in Central Florida and can have just about anything that urban city dwellers have even though we live in secluded nature.

City living simply can change you… for the worse.

A Times article “Stressed in the City: How Urban Life May Change Your Brain” explains.

The article says: City dwellers tend to be more stressed and have higher levels of mood disorders and psychotic illnesses such as schizophrenia than those living in rural or suburban areas. And now researchers say they have uncovered certain changes in brain activity that could potentially help explain why.

In an international study, researchers at University of Heidelberg and the Douglas Mental Health University Institute at McGill University report in the journal Nature that people who live or were raised in cities show distinct differences in activity in certain brain regions than those who aren’t city dwellers.

Those who currently live in the city, for example, showed higher activation the amygdala, the brain region that regulates emotions such as anxiety and fear.  The amygdala is most often called into action under situations of stress or threat, and the data suggests that city dwellers’ brains have a more sensitive, hair-trigger response to such situations, at least when compared with those living in the suburbs or more rural areas.

A huge trend is snowballing, fueled by technology and by simple economics.

Big business knows that stress is costing them big time.  Policies to reduce stress in the world, don’t just reflect employer benevolence.  A 2015 study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry showed that major depressive disorders alone cost companies $78 billion in lost productivity in one single year.

Businesses know that costs go up and profits go down if employees don’t show up to work because they struggle with depression, anxiety and stress.

Improved roads and especially great advances in rural broadband make it possible for businesses to develop work forces outside stress-filled cities.

The public is catching on as well.

One reader outlined the shift when he wrote me this note (before Irma).

Gary, I thought your letter, “How to Rise From the Fall” was spot on.  In it you mention the move toward Small Town America. I have written you in the past explaining my view that there will be a migration from coastal areas toward higher ground in the not too distant future, in particular out of South Florida.

We were in a small community a couple of weeks ago in preparation for our move there this coming November and spoke to a number of furniture sales/design consultants. They are all telling me that the migration out of South Florida has now begun in earnest. But rather than moving because of rising water levels the migration is due to congestion and crime. People want out of the jungle that South Florida has become. They are looking for just what you describe, a more peaceful life in a smaller community.  Keep up the good work, you remain ahead of the trend.

That’s what we need… a trend we can grab onto that provides opportunity and reduces stress.

Look for areas of opportunity as the maddened crowd and businesses move out of big cities into Smalltown USA.

Look for ways to gain the Smalltown benefits yourself.   Have a slower pace, eliminate traffic.  Breathe fresher air.  Drink purer water.

Live better, earn more, spend less.  That’s the essence of being a Pruppie.  See how to make your life better, in this way, below.

Why Blueberries are Cool


Internal cooling is an important natural health activity during the summer.  Fortunately keeping your cool during the dog days of summer can be pleasant and easy.

One way I keep our cool in the summer is by taking morning walks, barefoot in wet grass and picking fruit we have planted along the side of our house.  We have strawberries, raspberries, black raspberries, blackberries, blueberries and grapes.

Here is a great cooling health tip.  Keep some red (not white) grapes in the freezer.  Whenever you feel hot and bothered or angry (a sign of internal heat), suck a frozen red grape.

During the summer, eating cooling foods helps keep our body in balance and berries are an important source of cooling and nutrition.

Right now blueberries are in season.  When our garden does not supply enough, we buy extra.

Blueberries are the most powerful antioxidant fruit.

A single half cup of blueberries doubles the normal antioxidant intake and has anti-aging effects. Blueberries are associated with the prevention of cancer, brain damage, high cholesterol and age-related health diseases.  Blueberries also have other important vitamins and minerals that are extremely beneficial to natural health.

Blueberries are very low in saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium.  They are an excellent source of Vitamin C, Vitamin K and Manganese.

However, pesticides on non-organic on grapes and blueberries can outweigh the advantages.  According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more than 50 pesticide residues cling to conventional blueberries.  Blueberries are one of the dirtiest fruits and one of those supermarket fruits where it pays to go organic.  Grapes are also pesticide challenged. Organic is the best way to go.

I buy organic blueberries and grapes when I can but, do not trust the word organic anymore.  I pay for more hoping that the label means that the fruit has less poison on it, though I am pretty cynical about this.

Organic or not, I also soak my blueberries and grapes, in fact all the fruit and vegetables we buy, in Purely Green.

In addition I increase the size and yield of my own organic blueberry crop by spraying the bushes throughout the growing season with BioWash.
