Resilience is armor against the changes in life that wear us out.   Life is neverending change so we need ever lasting qualities that help us continually adapt and progress rather than be beaten down.

This is Part IV in a series about the 13 qualities of resilience.  See links to Parts I through III below.

A cool temperament is one of the foundations of resilience.  A temperamental style that is fluid and easy, as opposed to erratic and brittle, acts as a facilitator of social involvement, adaptability, coping, belonging, and resilience.

The world is heating up literally and figuratively.   More and more of our lives are directed by hotheads.  We need to remain chilled and stay cool.

Ayurved, the Indian science of life and the Andean shamanic wisdom look at health as a balance between three physical elements, motion (air), material (water) and digestion (fire).  Both (late night news and Tabasco) should be avoided.

Reducing fire in a heated world is beneficial for health because fire rules digestion.  When out of balance, we do not digest any information correctly, whether we get it it from what we eat, feel, hear, smell or see.  Watching the fiery news at 10pm gives us as much (or more indigestion) as a hot meal covered in Tabasco.

Fire also rules beauty because its imbalances are reduced by the body through the skin.  Too much fire creates rashes, acne, blemishes, poor skin luster, dull hair and much more.  The fire reducing trick below not only enhance health, but also help clear your skin and make it glow.

Here is a trick that can help you reduce the fire.  Instead of watching TV at night, try Moonbathing.  This can be romantic as well as healthy. 

Often when the sun sets in lavender glory, Merri and I take a walk in the cool evening air.  We’ll hike into the woods, start a camp fire to warm the cool night air… and listen to the katydids as we bathe in moonbeams.

We soaked in the moon’s creamy reflections filtered through the forest.  Then we stroll in the moonlight back to the house glowing its welcome in the night.

This may sound even crazier than eating watermelon for good health, but try it.  I find the moonlight to be not only beautiful but calming.

The foundations of this idea… though less romantic than the pure beauty of moonlight are imbedded in both ancient and modern scientific terms.

Moonlight impacts the area of the body called, in Ayurved, the crown chakra.   The Andean indigenous wisdom acknowledges this area at the top of the head as a key to balancing all the Rios de Luce (Rivers of Light) or main energy processing points in the body.

This center is located in the top of the head, is associated with the brain, and the entire nervous system.

The subtle frequency of moonlight is soothing and calming… which helps mitigate fire imbalances.

The crown chakra is said to affect what one experiences when in the deepest part of their being, as a point of consciousness glowing with intelligence called “White Light”.

Metaphysically, this is considered the most subtle element of which the entire physical universe is created.

This fits nicely with a science if we view the endocrine system as a series of frequency receptors.

The crown chakra is believed to regulate the pineal gland which connects the endocrine system with the nervous system and converts nerve signals from the sympathetic system of the peripheral nervous system into hormone signals.

The pineal is involved in several functions of the body including, secretion of melatonin and conversion of nervous system signals into endocrine signals.

The popular science website has an article entitled “Moonlight Magic” (1) by Alan M. Petrillo that  tells how a successful businessman spent $2 million to build a 50-foot-tall moonlight collector, a 30-ton array of mirrors called the Interstellar Light Collector and invited scientists nationwide to put his device to the test.

The article says: Biologists at the University of Arizona have expressed interest in using the collector to study moonlight´s effects on plant growth cycles but not yet on people. If nothing else, the collector offers a unique research opportunity.

Although moonlight is reflected sunlight, its frequency and spectrum are unique and, so far, irreplicable, which makes it difficult to examine in a controlled, clinical fashion. “It´s a hot area to understand the spectral effects of light on human health and physiology,”  says Michael Gorman, a University of California at San Diego Biopsychologist who has studied how hamsters react to light.

However, we choose to view it… romantically as the soft glow that washes a moonlit path… as an ancient wisdom or a scientific reaction in the pineal gland.

Moonbaths can help cool us and balance our fire, water, air equilibrium.

Secret of the Hogberry

More than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer.  Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear.  Body fat.

Studies showed that those who were most active have a 25% lower chance of developing cancer because reduced body fat is possible pathway to lowering cancer risk.  Time Magazine has some good information on the relationship between exercise and reducing cancer.  Have a look below if you want to research more deeply (1).

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.  I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat and cancer?   Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.   Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation.  Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

The way to avoid this storage of deadly toxicity is to keep stress down, while digestion and detoxification pathways remain good.

Longevity in Lettuce and Sunshine of Thought


“The sun always shines somewhere”.  

This was a main theme in my 1970’s book, “Passport to International Profit” and remains equally true today.  Our lives are driven by forces we often cannot see. Even if visible they cannot always be understood.  Plus we cannot change most of what what we do understand and see.

Is this the root of optimism?

Fortunately, we have power in the bright side.  Optimism helps us see the silver linings so we can adjust, adapt and evolve.

Optimism is the only practical attitude and is related to longevity.   A recent 11-year study (1) of more than 2800 men and women between the ages of 56 and 72, found that those who were more pessimistic were 2.2 times more likely to die of heart disease than those who were less pessimistic.

Pessimism increases health risk including stroke, poor arterial health, heart failure and coronary heart disease.

We can live longer and accomplish more when we live a more wholesome, peaceful, optimistic, giving, loving, joyful, calm, nature-based lifestyle,which is the key to a happy heart.

How can we be optimistic when so much bad stuff seems to be going down?  The solution is to change our lifestyle so we have better nutrition, more good exercise and deeper sleep.

This message shares three simple ideas that help us sleep better.  Chronic lack of sleep can increase the risk of most degenerative diseases and anxiety and depression, cancer, impaired cognitive function metabolic difficulties, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, elevated blood pressure and more.

Today’s stress levels are 24/7, with little end in sight for many folks. Such chronic stress has a direct impact on sleep.  According to a 2001 scientific poll, 38% of Americans received a solid 8 hours of sleep. In 2009, that number was reduced to just 28%.  Sleep is so important for good health that one study linked getting 7-8 hours of regular sleep each night to a reduction in mortality from all causes.

Lack of sleep creates a negative self reinforcing downward spiral.  Sleep creates higher stress levels and elevated cortisol.  These factors create more stress, which raises cortisol levels higher, which disturbs sleep patterns even more.

Here are three simple steps that can break this spiral.

#1: Reduce digestive overload at night.   Everything that our senses process is a form of digestion.  Eat lightly. Turn off the news and violent or negative emotion inducing shows. Put down stimulating books.

#2: Go to bed before 10pm.  The body has natural rhythms connected to the sun.  Sleep is most natural from 9pm to 5am.

#3: Drink warm milk with lettuce.  Researchers have found that when bioactive peptides in milk are taken before bed, the improvements in sleep are remarkable: (2)

  • Promotes deeper sleep
  • Supports more restorative sleep
  • Induces relaxation at the level needed for sleep
  • Supports anxiety that disturbs sleep
  • Improves numerous stress markers

Even better, drink the raw milk that does not have added hormones, chemicals and antibiotics.  Unnecessary homogenization and the wrong type of pasteurization also reduce the benefits of milk.  An alternative to raw milk when it is not available is non-homogenized, vat pasteurized, chemical, antibiotic and hormone-free milk.  This is available in many health oriented grocery stores.

Why cook with lettuce?

This tip was given to me by an Andean yatchak and who rarely explain why, but a bit of research provided an explanation about how lettuce can bring sleep.  Lettuce contains an opium-like substance called lactucin that has sedative and analgesic properties.  Lactucin has been called “Lettuce opium”.   It is a latex, lactucarium and physically resembles opium as a white fluid and can be reduced to a thick solid.  The Egyptians refined it.  Refined lettuce opium was sold as a drug in the United States in the 1800s.

Lettuce cooked in milk creates a one-two knock out punch of the bioactive peptides and lactucin.

Like milk, lettuce is not straight forward.  First, commercially grown lettuce involves a lot of pesticides.  If you use store purchased lettuce, I recommend organic lettuce with a good soaking in Purely Green as explained in “Food Purification With Purely Green Clean”.

Normally we grow lettuce, beans, peas, squash, radishes, raspberries, grapes and figs as well as our citrus, but lettuce after radishes, is the easiest and fastest to grow.

St. Patrick’s Longevity Tip to St. Valentine


See Red?  Feeling Blue?  Go Green.

There is a lot of political tension in America between the red and blue that can leave us angry or depressed.  See a cure below when all this stress gets you feeling fried up or melted down.  This is a tip from my Natural Health Report.  Colors can be natural health tools, and the color green can help us rebalance.

These activities upgrade my mood, because there is power in green.

A good way to increase intelligence is to be in nature.  Often when stumbling in my thoughts, I pack up my laptop and walk the couple hundred yards from our front door to the pond.

I find that the peace, quiet and calm of nature frees any clouds and stimulates my thinking.

Also there is evidence that “nature deficit disorder” shortens lifespan.  Researchers at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (1) found a strong correlation between living surrounded by greenery and longevity and mental health.

They evaluated more than 108,000 women all across America for eight years. There was a 12 percent lower risk of death for those women who lived in the greenest surroundings.  34 percent were less likely to die of a respiratory-related issue and 13 percent less likely to die of cancer.  The strong correlation also extended to mental health. Women living in the greenest environments were happier and less depressed.

Next time if you are feeling blue or so stressed that you are seeing red….go green.  You’ll feel better.  The odds are that you will also live longer also!

We approached Ganges Harbour, Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, Canada, just as the sun slipped beneath the sea.  The Cessna 185 settled gently onto smooth water.  That trip revealed a vital, most basic health secret that I want to share here with you.

The pilot had pushed the little plane high, despite its full load and awkward pontoons, so we could see the spectacular sunset panorama better.  Golden lights muted the darkening Pacific islands below.  Then we descended with the sun onto a sheltered bay having flown from Florida to Atlanta, Portland, Vancouver and then at last to Salt Spring Island by float plane.  The trip had taken 16 hours and we were ready for its end.

Yet our bodies felt good.  Our spirits were high!  We had studied the physical and emotional aspects of long trips for years.  Our travel plans had evolved into a special routine so we are still bright, happy and full of stamina even after the long journey.  Besides this trip was a healing adventure of a lifetime.  We felt the extra excitement.

For many years Merri and I had taken semi-annual trips to an Ayurvedic health spa where our friends Jay Glaser, John Douillard and Deepak Chopra had been medical directors.  Merri and I traveled too much and worked too hard so we needed these cleansing, health R & Rs to keep our energies high and minds clear.  We had learned years ago that we could not keep drawing money out of our health bank without putting some back in.  We have learned that busy schedules and hectic paces, needed regular deep rest and some form of cleanse.

One Ayurvedic system of health-tune up is an ancient cleansing therapy from India called Panchakarma.  This was a twice a year routine for us for seven years at that spa.  Every spring and fall we took this break.  This trip to Salt Springs Island, however, was different as we decided to take an even deeper healing technique called Kayakalpa, a once in a lifetime treatment of rejuvenation.

The Kayakalpa treatment was perfect, lasting over three weeks.  This is something everyone should do, but many cannot.  However while on that trip I gained an accidental discovery that is even more vital for longevity, high energy and good health balance.

The discovery has changed my health for the better.   The secret has to do with ring muscles and reaches the deepest roots of natural health.  The knowledge is so powerful, so simple and because it is absolutely free, hardly ever discussed or offered by health care professionals in Canada or the USA.

The health secret comes from the fact that in a healthy body, all sphincters work together, contracting and relaxing simultaneously.  They also activate the respiratory system, the gastrointestinal system, the circulatory system, the lymphatic system, the musculoskeletal system and the urogenital system.  Ring muscles are ultimately responsible for putting all the other muscles and all the organs of the body to work.

If the ring muscles are out of balance, then it is enormously hard to keep the skeleton, muscles and organs in good health.

Ring muscle exercises are simple, easy and cost nothing!

Tackle 21 health imbalances such as obesity.  I do the obesity exercise twice a day personally.  It’s as simple as “chewing in the correct way”.  (See 20 other imbalances that ring muscles can address below). Correct chewing releases nutrient molecules so energy from food is more quickly released and assimilated.  This allows the brain to recognize flavors and release the correct digestive juices for that food.

Proper chewing does even more because it stimulates the body’s  sphincter (or ring) muscles that surround the various orifices of the body.

You exercise the neck, chest, abdomen, all the way down to the butt, just by chewing differently.

That’s it. I exercise every time I eat and no one even knows.  This does not take extra time.  This does not cost a thing and anyone can do it.   Yet this is one of the most deeply profound exercises there is because not only does it jumpstart the toning of the entire body, but helps overcome overeating.   Overeating is a very common problem and is fundamentally a result of poor muscle tone of the oral sphincter.  When our sphincter muscles are out of balance, the body tries to restore them by chewing.

What seems to be the body’s craving for food can be the body’s craving for proper exercise of the sphincters.

With proper exercise the sphincters return to normal operation and there is no longer a demand for more food than the body needs.   It is possible to eat enough without the fear of getting fat.  All you have to do is to make sure to open your jaws widely enough with each chew to bring all the sphincters muscles into action.  This will reduce your body’s craving to eat and will also enable your body to burn up more calories more efficiently.

Can weight control be as simple as just chewing food in a slightly different way?  This has definitely helped me and hundreds of readers I have shared this exercise with personally.  Upon using the technique, my weight dropped and I have been able to reduce the amount of discipline required to not snack in mornings and afternoons.  More important I feel better, more relaxed and at ease.

This simple exercise also helps avoid a blood sugar – insulin roller-coaster.

The blood sugar roller coaster begins when we eat too much of something with too high of a sugar content.  Our pancreas starts to secrete insulin to reduce the blood sugar.  Insulin triggers cells throughout your body to pull the excess glucose out of your bloodstream and store it for later use (ie. turn the sugar into fat).  This reduces the available glucose and the brain says  “Hey, guys and girls… eat… sweets… carbs… junk now!”  That little grey guy sitting on top of your shoulders is very demanding.  He throws willpower right out the door the minute the glucose supply starts to run too low.  Then we eat again.  This process creates many of the worst health problems facing us today…too many to delve into here.  The simple fact is, if we eat less and do not start this roller coaster, we benefit in many ways.  This ring muscle exercise helps avoid this tragic medical error.

Americans who prioritize doing good for others are almost twice as likely to say they are very happy about their lives. In Germany, people who seek to serve society are five times likelier to say they are very happy than those who do not view service as important. Selflessness and joy are intertwined. The more we are one with the rest of humanity, the better we feel.

The articles helps us see that a lack of material wealth is not the source of our angst and anger.  The problem is that increasing numbers of people feel they are no longer useful and no longer needed.

This is why the main thrust of our mantra at this website is to have a pinnacle career, do something you love, that helps others and that makes a profit.

We live in an era where there is risk of economic instability, both in our currencies and commercial markets.  Having an activity that creates income helps stabilize this risk.  When the process is also fun and fulfilling the profits go far beyond the dollars, leading to a richer and longer life.

Avoid the Secret Chargemaster

Secret of the Hogberry

More than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer.  Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear.  Body fat.

Studies showed that those who were most active have a 25% lower chance of developing cancer because reduced body fat is possible pathway to lowering cancer risk.  Time Magazine has some good information on the relationship between exercise and reducing cancer.  Have a look below if you want to research more deeply (1).

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.  I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat and cancer?   Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.   Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation.  Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

The way to avoid this storage of deadly toxicity is to keep stress down, while digestion and detoxification pathways remain good.

Burn Fat to Burn Toxins

When you burn fat not primarily for weight loss, (though you will lose weight) but for purification, you can turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy.   Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins.  As the toxicity drops, the nervous system has reduced stress and will naturally burn fat instead of sugar.

Intermittent fasting is one way to get the body to burn fat.  There is a way of eating that helps reduce weight, improve energy and purify the body as it returns to a state of natural health.

We Live in Exciting Times


How Exciting!  Beware when you hear or think these words.  We need in-sights to make good decisions, not ex-cites.

We each need to determine how we live our own individual lives.  If not, someone else will and those someone others usually do not have your best interests at heart.  The results are usually not pretty.  Various forces, government, big business, education, media, etc, all vie for the right to lead us (and usually cash in on the process).

Regretfully what they say is what is good or bad for them, not for you or me as individuals.

The main tool external forces use to motivate us is excitement.  When we are excited, the quiet voices within that tell us where and what we should be are not easily heard.  Excitement blinds our insight.

The power of a good democracy requires a continual stress between the Public (Middle Class ie. You and Me), Big Business and Big Brother.  That tension is good when it stops any one of the forces from becoming too big.

When government and big business join their forces, democracy is diminished.  The public loses trust.

A New York Times article “How the Sugar Industry Shifted Blame to Fat” (1)  gives an example.

The article says:  The sugar industry paid scientists in the 1960s to play down the link between sugar and heart disease and promote saturated fat as the culprit instead, newly released historical documents show.

The documents show that a trade group called the Sugar Research Foundation, known today as the Sugar Association, paid three Harvard scientists the equivalent of about $50,000 in today’s dollars to publish a 1967 review of research on sugar, fat and heart disease.  The studies used in the review were handpicked by the sugar group, and the article, which was published in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine, minimized the link between sugar and heart health and cast aspersions on the role of saturated fat.

One of those Harvard scientists went on to become the head of nutrition at the United States Department of Agriculture, where in 1977 he helped draft the forerunner to the federal government’s dietary guidelines.

For 50 years millions of people have been led in a false direction by this integration of Big Business and Big Brother.

Who benefits from such subterfuge?

Two clues from the Wall Street Journal article “Epipen Maker Dispenses Outsize Pay” (2).  One clue is in executive pay of drug and biotech firms.

This article says that Mylan, (the company which has dramatically increased the price for Epipens), the second-highest executive pay among all U.S. drug and biotech firms over the past five years, paying its top five managers a total of nearly $300 million.

Mylan paid three top executives a total of at least $70 million apiece over that five-year period. The three were Chairman Robert J. Coury, Chief Executive Heather Bresch and President Rajiv Malik.
All three Mylan executives ranked among the 20 highest-paid in the drug industry over the five years, a distinction unmatched by any other company.

The second clue is in the fact that this was the headline article in the US online edition of the Wall Street Journal.  The article did not appear in the online European edition at all.

What can we do?  Instead of letting mainstream media form our opinions, we need to use our experience, application of knowledge, and critical reasoning to create our own personal insights that guide us.  There is a concept about living this way in Buddhism called Theraveda.  This is at the roots of the word Therapy.

We need to integrate what we read, see and hear with the teachings of masters but not let the news or teachings become the masters.  If we temper exciting information with our experience, we can gain insights that shows the right, most powerful direction for each of us.

Secret of the Hogberry

More than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer.  Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear.  Body fat.

First, body fat and cancer?   Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.   Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

Not all omega-3 supplements are created equal.

Avoid the Secret Chargemaster

Rising Costs of Disease Management


An International Club member MD spoke at our August  International Club Retreat.   One of his comments really stuck with me.  “The medical care system has shifted from offering health care to disease management.”

Disease management is good for health insurers and big pharma.  Disease creates more profits than preventive care.  Health care of this sort is not good for us.  Western longevity may have been extended, but at what cost to quality of life?

We can see this problem in the news about how EpiPen (the allergy treatment injector) prices have climbed nearly 550% over the last eight years.  Despite complaints from government and consumers, the drug maker is not lowering the list price.  There is little competition so it is unlikely to do so.

The drug company is promising to increase insurance out-of-pocket assistance up to $300, from $100 and expand the number of low-income patients eligible to receive company subsidies.  They even created their own generic pen to compete against themselves.

This simply shifts the cost to higher insurance premiums and brings to light the plight to the middle class Americans.

Rising out-of-pocket health care costs for middle class Americans is putting a serious dent in lifestyle.

Overall, health-care spending across the economy has increased 38 percent since 2000 but this figure hides how the middle class have been hit hardest.

The government pays more into Medicare, and Medicaid and provides subsidies for low-income people.

Middle-class households who are not retired are deemed poor and are finding more of their health-care costs are coming out of their own pockets.  Middle-income households now spend the largest percentage (8.9%) on health care (i.e. disease management).  This is a 25% increase over their health care spending in 2007.

The easiest solution to this problem is to return to nurturing natural health instead of investing in disease management.

Essential Oil Deodorant for Natural Health

Here is why I am excited about the essential oil deodorant Merri and I use.

Everyday living bombards most of us with all types of toxicity, from the air we breath, to the water we drink, even the receipts at the supermarket may be toxic.  Merri and I compensate for this by taking care in what we eat, drink and especially breathe and put on our skin.  The fastest way for any element good or bad to get into the blood stream is via the lungs and the skin.

Since it is difficult for most of us to avoid toxicity in the West, this message looks at a longevity alternative and begins by showing how in the early 2000s, due to strict FDA  regulations, the government has approved a product that may encourage cancer, create dementia, Alzheimer’s and complicate kidney problems.

The FDA issued a final rule which said “over-the-counter (OTC) antiperspirant drug products are generally recognized as safe and effective and not misbranded as part of FDA’s ongoing review of OTC drug products”.  I suspect that part of this ruling was influenced by scientists with the Personal Care Products Council, the trade association that represents the cosmetic and personal care products industry.  They have claimed that “antiperspirants can be used with high confidence of their safety. They’ve been used for many years, and there’s no evidence that suggests a problem“.

Many people use over-the-counter antiperspirant drug products every day because almost everyone does.  That’s the way its seems like it has always been.  Is this wise or simply the massive repetition of an error?  We assume that the FDA exists to protect us, but must ask this question, “How much should we trust?”

The FDA’s claims of safety are not entirely correct, because antiperspirants contain aluminum. 

An article at Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment helps clarify the risks of placing aluminum under our arms every day. (2)  This article says of aluminum, a main ingredient in antiperspirants, “What’s it good for in humans? Simple answer: not very much.  Except for possible involvement in some enzymatic reactions, aluminum “has no known function in the human body.”   While there is little or no upside for aluminum in the body, there is a most definite downside: aluminum is a neurotoxin.

The Aluminum Downside

The Duke article (linked below) contains numerous links to a number of negative health effects, including impaired mental and motor function, Alzheimer’s and other brain diseases, and bone diseases.  It points out a number of questions about aluminum’s impact on human health and explains there is not much study on aluminum antiperspirants.  Then it says: So, while the FDA regulates antiperspirants as over-the-counter drugs and deems them safe, it hasn’t based its decision on a large body of work specifically examining these products.  So rather than a stamp of approval, FDA’s aluminum regulation seems more an indication that, given the ubiquitous nature of aluminum, exposure from antiperspirants isn’t believed to be unsafe.”

Antiperspirants and Disease:  It’s the Pits

In other words there’s no definitive answer.  There are links between aluminum and disease, yes.  There is a link to Alzheimer’s, dementia, diminished thinking and cancer but, no study provides specific proof of a direct link between antiperspirants and these problems.

We can see the risks of aluminum more clearly at a different government source, the Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry. (3)

This agency’s report on aluminum says: Workers who breathe large amounts of aluminum dusts can have lung problems, such as coughing or changes that show up in chest X-rays.  Some workers who breathe aluminum-containing dusts or aluminum fumes have decreased performance in some tests that measure functions of the nervous system.

Some people who have kidney disease store a lot of aluminum in their bodies.  Sometimes, these people developed bone or brain diseases that doctors think were caused by the excess aluminum.

Although aluminum-containing over the counter oral products are considered safe in healthy individuals at recommended doses, some adverse effects have been observed following long-term use in some individuals.

Studies in animals show that the nervous system is a sensitive target of aluminum toxicity.

Then there is the question of  parabens.

A health warning from Mercola.com (4) says:   99% of Breast Cancer Tissue Contained This Everyday Chemical (NOT Aluminum). Recent research found higher concentrations of parabens in the upper quadrants of the breast and axillary area, where antiperspirants are usually applied, suggesting they may contribute to the development of breast cancer.

The data from this latest study, the most extensive examination of parabens in human breast so far published, confirms previous work and raises a number of questions on the entire parabens, personal care product and human health debate, particularly relating to the source and toxicological significance of the paraben esters.

The Value in Strength Investing


Fun helps attract valueA recent article at this site about how I am a multi-taskaholic.   Multitasking for fun, health and purpose increases value.  When we enjoy the mutlitasks, we enhance healthy, health values.

Here is an example of a fun exercise… for me at least.

This is my 1,100+ calorie an hour, multi-tasking, life extending exercise.

John Douillard DC recently wrote at his Lifespa website (1):

Let’s talk longevity! While yoga has been found to support health and longevity in numerous studies not everyone is good at or attracted to yoga.

John’s article points out that different exercises are the best fit for the three different body types.

Air body types, who are light and naturally more flexible, may like yoga and be naturally good at it.

Water are the biggest and strongest, but not so flexible. They tend towards (and benefit more from) heavy exercise like hiking or weight training.

Fire body types, a combination and are generally good at most physical activities.

John has a great book “Body, Mind and Sport”(2),  that can help anyone choose exercise based on their body type.

John’s article shows how a study of  more than 30,000 adults over 65 years of age who performed strength training with weights two times a week had substantially decreased mortality risk by a whopping 46 percent.

John says: Not only did they have a 46 percent decreased risk of dying from any cause compared to the non-exercisers, the weight training group had a 41 percent reduced risk of dying from heart disease.  The study reported that if they weight trained just twice a week, they had a 19 percent reduced risk of getting cancer as well.

Previous studies have linked strength training with improved muscle mass, and reduced risk of diabetes, osteoporosis, lower back pain and obesity.  Clearly, stronger muscles are a great asset to navigate aging, as it may result in better stamina, physical function, and balance, but this is the first time strength training has been so closely tied to longevity.

Personally, I hate the idea of standing in some artificial atmosphere (read gym) and walking on a treadmill or lifting weights as if they were logs or rocks.  We do not need to go to a gym.  Push-ups, sit-ups, squats, walking stairs or raising cans of food up and down over your head are all strength exercises we can do at home.

My exercises of choice are clearing fallen trees, chopping wood, bush hogging and hiking.  These can be heavy exercises.  I love them, out in nature, in the woods.   This helps me remain trim, clears my mind as well as enhancing longevity.  Plus I gain additional benefits by wearing my Bose sound cancelling headphones and listening to certain types of classical music when using the chainsaw (more on this in a later message).

The book, “Norwegian Wood: Chopping, Stacking and Drying Wood the Scandanavian Way” by Lars Mytting points out why the phrase “Lumberjack’s Breakfast” is synonymous with “a lot of Food”.

The book says:  Lugging Timber burns up a startling 1,168 kilocalories per hour, and splitting logs with an axe takes another 444.

By contrast, an hour of watching television gets rid of 77 kilocalories; 281 kilocalories disappear while washing the floor, 405 skiing, 481 clearing snow, 510 playing soccer, 814 in a tough aerobic  workout and, finally, 1,213 in running fast-the only thing that beats lugging timber.

Doing what I enjoy burns calories like crazy, perhaps extends my lifespan (as long as I am careful with that chainsaw) all while doing something that’s really satisfying.

Dr. Jay Glaser’s book “Body Renewal: The Lost Art of Self Repair” points out that enjoyment in  exercise makes the process much more worthwhile.

Chapter 13 of Jay’s book is entitled “Getting Serious About Playing” says:  Just watch puppies, kittens and kids.  Wrestling, horseplay and tussles are their work.

The Value of Play. Exercise done in this context is the wisest because it is the most enduring and the safest. It’s harder to push yourself to the point of injury when you have the attitude, “I’m just out playing”.  Like a newborn cub, the human body will intuitively seize on the requirement to tone, strengthen and condition itself.

Don’t exercise, Just Play.  A good research study shows that exercise is as effective as the anti-depressant Zoloft in relieving depression especially in the long run.  More recently, it was shown in a study of Scottish adults that being physically active just once a week for twenty minutes including doing housework and gardening – is enough to lower risk of psychological distress and improve mental health.

We gain enormous value when we put play in our work, our exercise and in our business and investing.

Play is nature’s way of attracting us to what we should do so our natural health improves from having fun as we exercise.  Work and play multi-tasked creates real value, so if we don’t have them now, we should start looking for things you love to do that can bring us strength.

Secret of the Hogberry

More than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer.  Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear.  Body fat.

Studies showed that those who were most active have a 25% lower chance of developing cancer because reduced body fat is possible pathway to lowering cancer risk.  Time Magazine has some good information on the relationship between exercise and reducing cancer.  Have a look below if you want to research more deeply (1).

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.  I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat and cancer?   Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.   Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation.  Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

The way to avoid this storage of deadly toxicity is to keep stress down, while digestion and detoxification pathways remain good.

Burn Fat to Burn Toxins

When you burn fat not primarily for weight loss, (though you will lose weight) but for purification, you can turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy.   Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins.  As the toxicity drops, the nervous system has reduced stress and will naturally burn fat instead of sugar.

Intermittent fasting is one way to get the body to burn fat.  There is a way of eating that helps reduce weight, improve energy and purify the body as it returns to a state of natural health.
