Simply put… Florida real estate prices are down… food prices are rising and as you’ll see below citrus groves present special opportunity now.

This site has promoted the idea of investing in agriculture for more than a decade so when Merri and I started investing back in Florida we invested in Lake County, which is surrounded by these fast growing strong farming communities.

One benefit we especially liked is Lake County’s agricultural economy.  A 2011 USA Today article entitled “Economic expert sees trouble ahead; Housing market municipalities may be in for a rough ride” by Maria Bartiromo shows how agricultural land has already become increasingly profitable.  Here is an excerpt from this article: Meredith Whitney seems to be softening her concerns about a looming muni meltdown as politicians across the country address fiscal challenges more aggressively.  She says a new area of strength is emerging in one part of the country where debt was not an issue: the agricultural belt.

There are parts of the economy that are doing very well. As a food producer, the economy in the middle part of the country’s doing well.

The ag-rich states are going to be Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Texas to a certain extent because it is a massive beneficiary of the price of oil.  It’s the central part of the U.S., you can almost draw a triangle around it, what I call the emerging markets of the U.S. It speaks to how dynamic and strong the U.S. economy really is. It’s just shifting. The U.S. is a composite of many different economies.

Indeed and Florida is a composite of many different economies as well.

The citrus economy in central Florida has a special problem that may create even more opportunity.
Excerpts from a 2011 NPR.org article entitled “Abandoned Citrus Groves Produce Problems In Fla.” by Greg Allen show the second reasons why there is special opportunity in citrus now. Here is an excerpt: Florida is a national leader in orange and grapefruit production.

But in the past few years, landowners have given up on more than 100,000 acres of citrus groves, which have become a threat to producers of the state’s signature crop.

The abandoned groves are breeding grounds for pests and diseases.

Dying Citrus Groves

Indian River, on Florida’s Atlantic coast, is known for its world-class grapefruits, oranges and tangelos. This time of year, many trees are still heavy with fruit.  But there are also many groves that aren’t doing so well.

Citrus growers have always had to fight disease. But in recent years, here in Florida, it has seemed that disease is getting the upper hand. Most recently, two diseases — canker and citrus greening — have been very difficult to control, requiring more care and nearly constant spraying.

Those diseases helped push many producers out of citrus. But Christine Kelly-Begazo says there’s another compelling factor: falling land prices.

Post-Housing Boom

Kelly-Begazo is an agriculture extension agent with the University of Florida in Indian River County. She says during the housing boom, speculators paid top dollar for citrus groves.

“Now, if you bought acreage at that time speculating that you were going to be able to make some money off of agriculture or development  or whatever, and the development boom busted, there’s no incentive now,” she says. “And that acreage is actually costing you money now. So they’ve abandoned the groves, but they’re not building on them either.”
Citrus producers in Indian River have begun a program to bulldoze and burn trees in abandoned groves. But it’s costly and depends on the cooperation of sometimes absentee owners.

This is the latest of many challenges for an industry that has long grown one of Florida’s most lucrative crops.

Consider this. Most investors think Florida real estate is in trouble. It is… some of it.  Yet this broad paint brush thinking masks over the fact that ag rich areas have extra potential. Ag economies are growing rich and parts of Florida are very different… because they are mainly agricultural.  Some parts of Florida have abundant water… great agricultural potential and offer extra opportunity because developers who planned to shift ag land to residential property cannot now do so.

I followed my own advice and invested in citrus, but in a special way… taking on a troubled grove.
Many of you know that we always look for value and in real estate especially we look for fixer uppers.  We took the same approach to citrus because we also knew about Bio Wash.

About a third of the trees in the grove we purchased had root rot. The needed to be replaced.

to yank out 500 (about a third) of our trees so our grove that looked like this… now…

That’s farming for you! 

You can see our home is surrounded by citrus groves and that our grove (inside the tan circle) could appear to look pretty shot.

Yet we are excited because…

we just sprayed the 1000+ remaining trees…

with…

Bio Wash.

Last year we had some good news when our grove manager wrote: “Last year we used your Bio Wash and we are prepared to use it for you again. The trees do look much better this year.”

Our hunch was correct.  The year before we bought the grove all 1,500 trees produced 1801 boxes of oranges.

We removed one third of the lower producing trees in a grove management plan. We sprayed the remaining 2/3rd with Bio Wash.

With 500 fewer trees, the grove produced 2,484 boxes of oranges in our first year.

In other words, last year the average was a yield of about 1.2 boxes of naval oranges a tree. This year the average yield was 2.4 boxes a tree… double.  This increased the income of the grove 37% with 33% less trees.

Our  grove  manager  is  one  of  the largest in Florida.  Farmers are conservative so our dinky grove will have to do more than this to make them look at this seriously.

So we asked them to spray with Bio Wash twice in 2011-2012. We did and the harvest is in with 3,394 boxes though we still only have 2/3rd as many producing trees as 2009-2010.  Production is up from one box a tree in 2009-2010 to 2.83 boxes this year.  With strong citrus prices, I expect to have tripled the grove while making it more environmentally friendly and perhaps letting the big boys in this business at least take a glance.

This has also made the grove extremely profitable.

I have been reading some great books about citrus and one added benefit is the…

food.  We have our own… Naval… Hamlin, Tangelo, Tangerine, Lemon, Lime as well as white and ruby red grapefruit. Chef Allen Susser gave us some great recipes.

At our courses when delegates visit we load them up with fresh squeezed juice… plus…

tangerine and orange fruit soup!  We squeeze the citrus right off the trees.

Finally the perfume of the orange blossom (starting just now) is overwhelmingly wonderful!

Citrus is the only fruit that remains ripe on the tree and has fruit and blossoms at the same time.

Fluency in a language is considered to come when you know 1,200 words. To prove that it is possible to gain this and much more, let me share just one of the 17 tactics Merri taught me that gives you thousands of Spanish words in less than three minutes.

Here are the thousands of Spanish words lesson #1:

All words in Spanish and English that end in ION are almost identical,  just pronounced differently. For example action is accion, education educacion, manipulation, manipulacion, etc.

Now you already literally know hundreds of Spanish nouns. This is just one of seventeen Spanish lessons you gain. The next lesson teaches you how to pronounce each of these nouns. Then you learn in a third lesson almost as many verbs, almost as quickly.

Third, you learn how to avoid conjugating verbs by sticking with the infinitive (far easier than it sounds). This simple lesson leaves you sounding like a Spanish professor (believe me I know as I use this tactic every day when in Ecuador).

There are many other lessons. For example lesson five shows how to sound infinitely polite and yet get almost anything you want in Spanish. Lesson six gives you the valuable connectors and the seventh lesson triples your Spanish capacity with yesterday, now and tomorrow.

By the end of the three day course you will feel quite comfortable speaking Spanish without stress!

In simple conversations, such as buying groceries or ordering a meal, I can make myself understood. A Livescience.com article helps explain why this course works and how delegates are creating Spanish sentences by the first lunch break and can communicate well in Spanish after just three days.   This article by Jeremy Hsu, LiveScience Senior Writer, is entitled “CIA Seeks Anyone, Anyone Who Can Speak 2 Languages”

Four important points in the article are shown in excerpts below with my comments to show what has been wrong with traditional Spanish courses and why the Super Thinking tactic is perfect for this program.

The article says: WASHINGTON, D.C. — Many Americans don’t learn a second or a third language from birth, let alone a language that the CIA or U.S. Foreign Service might want. The situation has forced U.S. government agencies to learn how to cultivate the most talented second-language speakers from among college students with little to no other-language expertise.

“In U.S. education, we don’t develop early bilinguals,” said Catherine Doughty, a language expert at the University of Maryland.

Doughty spoke as part of a panel on Feb. 19 during the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) conference in Washington, D.C. Finding the best.  Government agencies aren’t alone in trying to recruit multilingual speakers; U.S. corporations covet such skills for doing business in the era of globalization.

The article explained how Doughty and her colleagues used tests to train up cognitive processes related to language learning, such as the ability to hold information in the brain while using it for learning.  The tests sought to predict those who can succeed despite everything stacked against them.

The article reviewed changes in the brain.  Lee Osterhout is a cognitive neuroscientist at the University of Washington in Seattle.  His lab used electrodes placed on the scalp to measure the electrical activity created by the signals of brain cells. That allowed the researchers to see differences in the brain patterns among language learners and fluent speakers. They found some surprising results.

The article pointed out: Repeated studies of French language students showed that their brains responded differently to real French words compared with fake words after just two weeks of classes, even if the students themselves could not tell such words apart.   

“From knowing nothing to a little bit, [there are] huge changes in the brain,” Osterhout pointed out.”[From] knowing a little to knowing a lot, [it is] much more subtle.”  Another surprise came from studies of Spanish-speaking immigrants, because neither age nor language proficiency seemed to predict how quickly the immigrants picked up English. Instead, the fastest learners showed both the greatest motivation to learn and a willingness to use English at every opportunity despite being bad at it (at first).

MY COMMENT: This is the other reason why Super Thinking plus Spanish works. This three day course gets the delegates speaking and thinking Spanish all the time so they can use and/or think Spanish every day… and communicating even from the beginning. In this way the education grows even when Spanish is not being spoken.

Another: Gary and Merri,  It certainly was an interesting and intriguing four days for me.  I enjoyed the Spanish but even more so, all the tentacles that extended during those four days that went into so many different directions.

I grew up in a very SQUARE box with loving  and intelligent parents but my world remained within this box, unable to see beyond those walls, as I was never encouraged to “think outside the box”..  Mike has been opening doors and leading me outside this box but because of my upbringing I have not completely embraced or understood what was beyond those doors he opened for me.  As I have gotten older I have become more open to the world outside those doors yet those old tapes continue to play and I have not been able to completely release myself and experience all that can be.

Another shared this: Listening to the two of you during our time together has suddenly got me to thinking, and although some of the ideas still seem foreign to me,  I am at a point in my life now where I can say, “anything is possible” and I am now willing to embrace and allow myself to experience the world of possibility and let it take me in directions I may have in the past resisted.  I really don’t know where all this is going to lead me but I am now willing to explore, develop and grow.

I found all the information you offered on healing, realigning the body, nutrition, etc. so fascinating, have you ever thought about doing a course on just that?  With the aging population and the health care issues I think it would be not only an interesting course but one that would be very beneficial to so many.  I, personally, would love to learn more about what you talked about and plan on purchasing the book, “Body Renewal, the Lost Art of Self Healing” for my Kindle.

Another: Hola Merri Y Gary, I was thinking about you this Remembrance Day, and I went to check emails and there you are!  We had fun at Disney World on Monday and sat beside several Personnes Espaniol.  We could understand them however I couldn’t make sentences quickly, but could say one or two word phrases that were understood.  We arrived home at 3am yesterday – the airlines were very late in Denver due to a crew incident.

I found myself making up sentences all day yesterday as I was running errands.  John knows more vocabulary than I at this point as he has studied Spanish previously.  Today I will begin to review the lessons and construct sentences to send to you and the group – as you suggested below.  Es en BUENO sugestion!!!  I also received the email Merri sent with the 4005 words and started to scroll through those yesterday.

Another: Thank YOU Merri, Gary, Don and Richard for everything you have done to create and bring this wonderful experience to all of us.  It takes a well sychronized team of people to put on an effective, change producing seminar!  I have given many seminars and enjoyed the experience immensely.  The outcome is even better!  Estoy une infantil de Super Thinking and Spanish, y es possible aprender en tiempo.

Jim is a retired airline pilot who moved to Ecuador a year ago and lived in our Casa Blanca condos for a year.  He has become an Ecuador resident and built a house.   I interviewed him on one of our trips to Cotacachi.

Another a dentist said: I was so delighted with my experience at the Spanish training.  I felt more confident of ability to pronounce Spanish than I ever was of French or German.  Funny… I did not think I remembered any French or German but when I cannot remember the Spanish words the German and French popped up.  Practicing my pronunciation made my trip home go faster. I never enjoyed pronouncing either of the other two, but this was fun. It is hard to fall asleep at the wheel when you are moving your mouth to speak Spanish. It does work your mouth in a different way.  I realized that you have to say each syllable slowly and correctly(until you get it perfectly) and when you do it is impressive.

It was amazing to see us all writing such advanced sentences after a few days and so much more enjoyable than having to go through the alphabet to build the words to build the sentences.

Another Wrote: Dear Gary,  I intended to give it a few days before I wrote to you about my experience in the Spanish + SuperThinking  Course. However, I had such dramatic results today, in the physical rather than the cognitive realm, that I had to share this immediately.

I started my day with Baroque music. Before I began my Spanish lesson, I went through the Mayan Waves Brain Refresher (Brain Sync). I also played an alpha wave composition while I completed a lesson in the morning. I repeated the process this afternoon. Before my high intensity interval training (HIIT) workout in the evening, I put on a gamma brain wave video from you tube faster reading gamma waves help with exercise. I preformed the “Halo Of Sweat” workout from an online fitness site. Around the world, people complete the workout and posts their scores, striving to meet or beat the personal trainer. Frankly, my reps have rarely come close to the reps of the woman featured in the video nor have I ever beat her. Until today.

Not only did I come close to her performance, I surpassed her quite significantly with several exercises. I performed my best in the last exercise, Abs Burn Out. Her scores were 38, 34 and 33 and mine were 60, 40 and 47!

I believe several factors allowed me to achieve this acceleration in athletic ability today:

1. My left and right hemispheres are now harmonizing.
2. The meditation and relaxed concentration techniques I learned are coming more easily to me and effective.
3. My focus and concentration are greatly enhanced.

I am a Pilates professional so to have my exercise regimen improve so swiftly is remarkable. Not only am I now able speak Spanish but I am experiencing optimal health as well. I am deeply grateful to you and Merri for your SuperLearning instruction.  Be well,

My hobby, a profitable one, has been to fix up and sell many fixer uppers in Smalltown USA and all over the world.

This, for some, is a great way to earn and live in a very tax protected way.

Merri and I love new ventures and bringing old things back into service… old houses. ancient knowledge about better living… even old hotels to live better in.   This is fun to us… enormously satisfying, great for the environment and the process has treated us very well financially.

On top of this, the US government in its infinite wisdom makes this process, if the fixer uppers are your residence, tax protected.

I have told each of my children… if they love the idea… the most tax efficient way to live is to buy an old house… live in it and fix it. then sell it after two years.  Capital gains (up to $250,000) on your residence is tax free.  Where else can you earn $125,000 a year and not owe a penny of income or capital gains tax?

Some of our children have done well with this advice.

Fixer uppers offer five features I love in business… fun… satisfaction… environmental soundness… profits and tax protection.

If you love fixing up… there are incredible values on the real estate market now. It is difficult to sell new homes in good shape… much less places with problems.  You get extra low prices and yet can increase value dramatically with your energy and a can of paint!  Few outlays bring as much return on investment as a small… a few bucks a gallon… investment in Sherwin Williams, Behr or Valspar.

A variation in the theme is to do as we have done in Ecuador. Buy an old hotel or B&B… live in it… fix it up and rent.  You have some tax to pay then… but  not that much.  See a great new house for sale in Crucita Ecuador here.

Ecuador Unemployment & Retirement Benefits

Ecuador unemployment and retirement benefits that we’ll gain  in 2010 go way beyond cash.

Ecuador can help many who are unemployed or ready to retire. However Ecuador goes beyond unemployment and retirement. Ecuador offers a benefit for anyone about to become 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56, 63, 70, 77 or 84.

By now you have probably read about the high US unemployment figures released last week. The official jobless rate — 10.2 percent in October, was up from 9.8 percent in September.  Yet these numbers are worse than that.

An excerpt from the New york Times article “Broader Measure of Unemployment Stands at 17.5%” by  David  Leonhardt explains:   For all the pain caused by the Great Recession, the job market still was not in as bad shape as it had been during the depths of the early 1980s recession — until now.

With the release of the jobs report on Friday, the broadest measure of unemployment and underemployment tracked by the Labor Department has reached its highest level in decades. If statistics went back so far, the measure would almost certainly be at its highest level since the Great Depression.

In all, more than one out of every six workers — 17.5 percent — were unemployed or underemployed in October. The previous recorded high was 17.1 percent, in December 1982.

Ecuador offers an advantage for those who have become under or unemployed who have some reserves (and those ready to retire who are worried about having enough income) because the cost of living is so low.

You can still buy a house for $30,000 or $40,000. You can still live a good life on $1,000 a month.  Plus the weather is usually good!

There are many who are better off to move quickly before they squander their savings… just meeting the bills.

Yet Ecuador offers much more to more people than just those without a job or ready to retire.

I have been thinking about retirement and low cost living a lot because there is a tradition shared by the shamans in the Andes that life evolves in seven year cycles. Many philosophies and religions recognize the importance of seven year cycles… hence the Bar Mitzvah… Leviticus 25:1-55.    The majority in most nations is age 21.  I could go on.

This seven year cycle appears to represent a natural rhythm in human lives. When we move in tune with our natural rhythms we feel good and tend to progress. When we oppose our nature we often stall.   Because there is such a great influence in Ecuador from the ancient, indigenous wisdom it seems easier to slip into a natural flow.

In Ecuador we are not bombarded daily with how Kelloggs Cocoa Krisps help our children’s immune systems or how Swine fly vaccine shots affect our lives. When we leave all this type of noise behind we can start to get back in touch with reality.

I just turned 63, a time when many consider retirement.  63 years is the end of the first nine seven year cycles.  This has been a time of seven year reflection so I decided to look back at this site and see what was going on seven years ago.

I sometimes surprise myself… maybe too predictable.

I was probably, at age 56… thinking then about the seven year cycles as well.

So much that seemed really strange at the time… like buying a 180 year old hotel in Ecuador (neither Merri or I had even a minute of hotel management experience) or had we ever considered or even imagined having a hotel.

This does not mean we are ignoring Ecuador.  In fact we are expanding our Ecuador experience… a lot… as well. We have added  three new real estate tour destinations and are conducting at least 24 more tours than we offered last year.

In the last seven years, Cotacachi was our spot… a bit of heaven, like Mt. Dora, that most of the  world had missed… clean… peaceful… organized and offering incredible value. Low Costs

Our seminar and tour fees remain as they were in 2007 and 2008.  Merri and I run our business from home and our internet only structure keeps our overheads low.   By conducting many smaller tours we keep our staff at a minimum so our fees run as low as a third of what other seminar and tour companies charge… yet again and again we are told that they are the best.. most personal and of course we have way more experience than anyone else. We are not selling real estate but are simply offering tours to help you to understand the country, the areas, the prices so you can make an informed decision.

In addition we do not accept commissions or any form of compensation from hotels where our delegates stay, or from sellers of real estate on our tours. Instead we negotiate low room rates and try to get real estate sellers to offer discounts to our our tour delegates.

Split Sessions Available North and South

Our new split session seminars help those who have asked to attend courses but who cannot make it to Ecuador right now.  These courses… both our International Business & Investing and Super Thinking + Spanish seminars will have the first session conducted in Central Florida (Mt. From a real estate buyer in Ecuador.  Hello Again Gary,  I am just outside Salinas in Punta Blanca I remember you saying a decade ago to start there. I have seen the price on land here jump directly on the beach now $300 to $500 a square meter and off the beach $80 to $100 square meter and the lots are not big an average lot is 250 square meters. I bought several lots in this area for less than half of the asking price today. I remember seeing a article about that you wrote a decade ago that you were able to buy lot’s here in Punta Blanca for a couple to a few thousand.  You also used Naples Florida as an example this I why I bought here in Punta Blanca YOU WERE RIGHT! It all started the night I came back from my first trip when I came across your website. If it was not for the knowledge that you share and international living none of this would have gone as smooth as it has. So Thank You Gary!

Back in 2000 everything in Ecuador looked really bleak.  The country ran out of gas. All the banks shut down. here were demonstrations in the street.  A huge part of the population fled the country.

What an opportunity!

Having lived again and again in places where problems create opportunity… I look for trouble!   I began my business career  in Hong Kong in 1968.  There were communist riots and bombs being set off in the streets. The Chinese army was massed on the border. Life went on. We all figured out the fastest route to the British and American war ships in the harbor for a quick exit. We watched out for boxes in the street. Then we just got busy with life.  Those who stuck around and bought property and businesses made absolute fortunes.

Then I moved to London, a much quieter, safer, steadier place was expected.   Yet there were huge problems there.  The IRA started setting off bombs in the subway and around town.  They even shot some mortar shells at #10 Downing Street!  Ted Heath caused a general strike and the pound sank to $1 per pound!  The IMF was even needed to offer  economic support to bolster the pound.    I gathered my pennies and bought London real estate at the very bottom.  Those who joined me made fortunes once again.

Then during the 1980s US recession I jumped in again buying Naples, Florida real estate  that over the next 20 years skyrocketed… until it was so high… we exited. Proudly (lucky really) we sold our last condos in Naples in April 2007… just before the market began to crash.

The profits on these went immediately into more Ecuador property.

“Life goes on” is also a financial message.

If you have been in despair about our economy, you might be wondering if things can ever revive. Yes, they can and will! Life and business will be a little different, but mankind carries on. Living in the United States we’ll have to be a little more cautious but the western world will survive. Economies will continue to grow in an up and down way as they have for hundreds of years.

Once you believe this… you see troubled places with delight.

So when everything headed south and the economy tanked, I could not wait to get started in Ecuador. Merri and I created an an active Ecuador business, plus began buying property.   We bought a 962 acre hacienda, condos in the mountains, a house, a hotel, a four story office building plus condos and apartments on the beach.

This is why I am slathering over Florida.   Previous messages at this site have looked at our quest to buy Florida property again.

As I read the recent New York Times article by Michael F. McElroy “After Century of Growth, Tide Turns in Florida” I was reminded why. Here is an excerpt:  HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — The smiling couple barreling ahead on the cover of Liberty magazine in 1926 knew exactly where to go. “Florida or Bust,” said the white paint on the car doors. “Four wheels, no brakes.  So it has been for a century, as Florida welcomed thousands of newcomers every week, year after year, becoming the nation’s fourth-most-populous state with about 16 million people in 2000.

Imagine the shock, then, to discover that traffic is now heading the other way. That’s right, the Sunshine State is shrinking.  Choked by a record level of foreclosures and unemployment, along with a helping of disillusionment, the state’s population declined by 58,000 people from April 2008 to April 2009, according to the University of Florida’s Bureau of Economic and Business Research. Except for the years around World Wars I and II, it was the state’s first population loss since at least 1900.
“It’s dramatic,” said Stanley K. Smith, an economics professor at the University of Florida who compiled the report. “You have a state that was booming and has been a leader in population growth for the last 100 years that suddenly has seen a substantial shift.”

The loss is more than a data point. Growth gave Florida its notorious flip-flop and flower-print swagger. Life could be carefree under the sun because, as a famous state tourism advertisement put it in 1986,

“The rules are different here.”

But what if they are not? Or if those Florida rules — an approach that made growth paramount in the state’s sales pitch, self-image and revenue structure — no longer apply?

“It’s got to be a real psychological blow,” said William H. Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution who predicted that census data in December would confirm the findings. “I don’t know if you can take a whole state to a psychiatrist, but the whole Florida economy was based on migration flows.”
Recall what once passed for normal. Florida grew from 2.8 million people in 1950 to 6.9 million in 1970, and by about three million people each decade after that. Even during stagflation in the ’70s, Florida added about 200,000 people a year. More recently, from 2004 to 2006, Florida added about 1,100 people a day, as housing construction’s proportion of the state economy grew to twice the national average.

Now consider Broward County in 2009. The county, between Miami and Palm Beach, was one of the first areas to shrink — losing 21,117 people from April 2007 to April 2009, according to University of Florida data — and its experience offers a glimpse of what could be on the way elsewhere.

Now, we are selling several Ecuador properties to plow back into the “Sunshine State.”

I believe in Florida for one of the same reasons I believe in Ecuador… sunshine… warm weather in the winter.  This is the Florida-Ecuador connection.

I also believe in Ecuador as one of the closest to Florida, practical, low cost places to live with something even better…year round great weather!

Anyone interested in buying Ecuador property, let me know… I bought at really low prices so have some excellent real estate for sale at c0mpetitive prices.

Most investors traditionally run from bad times! But this very fact creates value investing opportunity. Few times has a real estate market been as badly hit as in Florida.   Ecuador real estate continues to appreciate as gringos leave the US and head for points south…but this part of the US south offers great potential now as well.

We are on the road making Ecuador comparisons, weathering the weather and wishing for Ecuador weather.

In other words Merri and I have extended our Florida meanderings so we do not arrive back at our North Carolina farm in a snow storm.

We have been looking at Ecuador income potential and so let’s view this hotel for sale on Ecuador’s beach.

Ecuador weather looked pretty grey on the day I took these shots… but we never have to worry about snow!

Readers  often write asking about the weather in the Andes. If you look up Quito weather for example it says “Rain” almost every day.  This is a puzzle as it is not true. We have been traveling though Florida getting a feel… wondering what has led us here.  Innocently wandering around… looking… checking…. waiting.

Of course the weather is great… though a bit sticky at times…. plus too dry right now. This is Florida’s third worst drought in history.

We can’t help but make comparisons with Ecuador.

Three things I noticed in the last two nights spent at Holiday Inns were:

First, when hotels here quote room rates…. they do not let you know of the tax.

In Ecuador we always provide this warning so guests know what the entire cost will be.

Secondly, hotels do not seem to have noticed the economic downturn.   Prices seem pretty high $119 for a Holiday Inn express and $129 for a Holiday Inn… plus the unmentioned taxes… for the typical box.This is double what our hotel costs at $59 (plus 22% tax).

Third, comes the free breakfast… overcooked buffets… terrible bakery pastries and everything served on foam plates and cups… with plastic knives and forks… without much (or really any service)… including the “wonderful” Smuckers jam.

I think of our hotel’s great cooked when you arrive, full breakfast… juice….fresh fruit made into an art form… hand made butter and hand made marmalade… plus choice of eggs in numerous ways… bacon or ham.  Though I have to be honest, I do not like the bread our hotel serves… next thing on my list to fix.

This is not a complaint… just a comparison.  Remember we are looking to buy in Florida because we also love it here.

Merri and  are having a great time. We are enjoying Florida’s warmth… seeing a lot of territory… ranging from Naples to Lakeland… Winter Haven… up to Clermont…. Mt Dora…  Tavares… Leesburg… Deland…  St Augustine… Palakta… Zeypher Hills plus some really out of the way (our favorite) places like Ridge Manor…  Crows Bluff…  Lady Lake… Fruitland Park.

This note is written from outside of Gainesville and today we inspect the Suwanee River.

The best place we have seen so far was remote… on the Withlacoochee River. We would have purchased this on the spot… except… it should be renamed…  Withlacoochee  Puddle!   We were very sad to see numerous lakes and rivers that are pretty much gone… during the terrible drought we are seeing here.

Multi Currency Thought

This reminds me of an important multi currency fact. The global economic downturn has driven the price of many shares down.. but has not stopped basic essential needs… like our need for water.

Shares of companies denominated in strong currencies that provide excellent needs can offer special value.

Take the water share we have followed for years… Hyflux.

Hyflux Ltd is company listed on the Singapore Stock Exchange that has a proprietary water filtering system that does business  in China, India, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region as well as Singapore and Southeast Asia.

These shares have fallen from a high of $4.88 to $1.72 as you can see in the chart below from uk.finance.yahoo.com

Back to the Ecuador beach hotel for sale.

The owners is asking $600,000 and claims income of $180,000 a year with a net profit of $50,000.  If these figures are accurate… this is not a bad value spot to start negotiations.  Here is the beach nearby…

Though this day was grey… there is a reward that comes with the clouds. The moisture creates some spectacular sunsets… like this one shot a bit north of this hotel at Palmazul.
