Rosaspamba Our Ecuador Sanctuary

Many valleys in Ecuador are famous for the longevity of the residents. Our search for such valleys led us to understand that we can use more than landscape to live better, richer and longer.

This article was written on May 2, 2009, on the 41st anniversary of starting my international business.  Yet I plan to keep writing and sharing information for 41 more years!

This was more than an idle boast.  The promise was made from a belief and understanding that  began to grow when we first arrived  in Ecuador and began searching for the longevity valleys there.

We purchased the 962 acre Hacienda Rosaspamba and lived and studied there for nearly a year with a Taita Yatchak and his apprentices.

Mountain mists are important to longevity.  One Ecuador shaman taught us that the hydrogen ions in the mists bond with free radicals on the skin to cleanse the body from the outside in.

Up here in these mountains people in decades and centuries past labored, breathed clean air, drank pure water and ate fresh food. These were hardy mountain people who worked hard, had little, ate little and with that made the most. Life was simple and they kept it that way.

The life here is healthy.

This time of year is glorious in the Blue Ridge. Here is a shot of our front yard.  Yet soon we head south traveling again to Ecuador.

There is plenty of beauty in Ecuador too.

I took this shot from near our hotel Meson de las Flores. The difference is this green was in the middle of winter. Cotacachi’s weather is eternal spring!

Ecuador travel is easy from the USA… less then four hours from Miami to Ecuador about five from Atlanta to Ecuador.

However travel is travel and security procedures combined with airline cutbacks have added stress on travel to Ecuador or anywhere.

So I thought the note below about Ecuador travel was worth sharing with all.

Gary,  I know you and Merri must be very healthy to do as much time on airlines as you both do, and many other attendant exposures!  In all the years I have enjoyed your news letters, I have never heard of either of you being “down with the flu or cold”!   Do you eat airlines food?  or do you have any other tips for healthy eating on airlines?  Any other health tips for airlines will be appreciated and put to good use!

The reader is correct… Neither Merri or I are hardly ever ill.  Neither of us has been to an MD (for sickness) in over 20 years. I cannot recall missing a day of work because we were ill.

There are many things we do to maintain our energy and health.  We try to spend  our time and money on health preservation instead of medical insurance.  There are links to numerous health tips below.

Here let’s just look at some tips for health on planes.

In May 1968,  I boarded my first commercial flight Portland, Vancouver, Tokyo, Hong Kong on Canadian Pacific Airlines.

Merri (I did not know her then) at about the same time was headed Atlanta – New York – Frankfurt on Lufthansa.

Over the next 41 years, we’ve traveled to more than 70 countries researching business opportunities, exploring and enjoying new destinations.

We have lived and worked on every continent.

Many of you like ourselves are on the run, traveling thousands of miles and crossing dozens of time zones the year through. We have to perform well on these trips even as we put enormous stress on our bodies.

Here are a few tricks we have learned over the millions of miles we have flown. I hope they help you in your travel to Ecuador… or wherever.

First, avoid peanuts and other hard to digest foods on airplanes. In fact it’s better to avoid salted peanuts completely. Our friend, the Taita Yatchak, who lived with us at our hacienda in Ecuador  was amazed to see us eat roasted peanuts. “High in Uric Acid”, he said.

Our Indian (from India) friends who are experts in Ayurveda (the 5000 year old Science of Life) have also warned us away from peanuts as being very hard to digest. They are known as tomasic (meaning those things that destroy rather than build).

Then imagine getting on a plane and crossing the ocean and a half dozen time zones which will throw off our digestion in itself.

This is a dry dehydrating environment hard on the kidneys. These factors alone are hard enough. To throw in a hard to digest food high in uric acid is like the kiss of death.

Second, avoid alcohol on airplanes. Dehydrating as well, hard on kidneys,and liver. Mixed with roasted peanuts! Ahhhhhh!

Third, sleep when traveling towards the sun. Travel through time zones throw off our Circadian rhythm.

We find that it helps to stay awake when traveling away from the sun. We fly to Europe or South America numerous times every year when I speak at seminars there and to visit our children.

Often I have to get up the day after I arrive and conduct seminars… sometimes for  eight hours. This requires a clear mind and energetic body.  So we need to be sure that the flight has not drained us.

We have flown across the Atlantic with clients and observed as they tucked into cocktails (peanuts!) heavy dinner, desserts and after dinner liquors while we are settling down to sleep through the flight.

We awaken, have only a little breakfast on the plane, and meet the European morning refreshed and ready to have a full day (but we go to bed early the first night).   Those clients are dragging and beat.  “Where on earth do you get your energy?” they ask.

Can’t sleep on planes?

Buy some Valerian tea at the health food store, ask for hot water and make your own tea. It tastes like what I imagine dirty gym socks would taste, but is a natural way to get to sleep.

We also use melatonin to restore the natural melatonin that is lost on endless time zones. Just buy a bottle of liquid from the health food store and take 20 minutes before sleep.

I also bring along my Bose noise suppressing headphones and some baroque music.

Before I leave on a journey, I massage my feet with an essential oil blend.

When essential oils are applied to our feet, they stimulate zones on our feet that “mirror” the entire body. Stimulating these reflexes sends messages to the associated body parts that help reduce tension, improve circulation and help the body deliver oxygen and nutrients to the cells… important benefits on a flight.

I use my Essential Oil Blend Chart, created by Candace Newman and massage the oil blend in my hair, put it in my ears up my nose, on my face and on my collar and shirt cuffs.

The oil fights virus and bacteria plus helps balance the flighty feeling on a flight.

We also avoid airplane water (except bottled).   We add a drop of Rose Otto essential oil.  This makes a tasty rose water that aids digestion and the time transition.

We make sure the oil we use is Rose Otto which is the steam distilled essential oil of rose petals. Otto is the term used to differentiate the steam distilled variety from the ‘Rose Absolute’ and “Rose Concrete”.  The extraction process for both Absolute and Concrete use solvents so Rose Otto from the Bulgarian ‘damask’ Rose, cultivated since the 16th century, is considered to produce the finest quality essence

Rose Otto is bright, alive, richly floral and complex and is more potent than the Absolute and Concrete so smaller amounts of Rose Otto are required.

We also spray ourselves (head and face and air above us) with lavender essential oil lavender misted with distilled water to combat dehydration and to refresh, cleanse and purify.

In Aromatherapy, mists and hydrosols are generally used to calm our emotions, lift our spirit, cleanse the air, and soothe the skin.

Next we travel first or business class using our frequent flyer miles to upgrade ourselves. There is more privacy and room in this class and because we book as early as possible, we almost always are upgraded.

We do yoga (or stretching) before we get on and off… plus stretch during the flight. This helps keep spinal fluids moving. The spine is often perceived as just a stack of bones in reality it is our gateway of energy and it shifts with every thought we have about life. It is a precise mirror of who we are. With every stress we have, the interrelationships of bones, muscles, ligaments, and nerves are altered in and through the spine. These deviations are minute, often imperceptible, but no matter how small, the changes in the spine have gigantic effects on the body.

On long flights we also  wear an ionizer around our necks. This purifies the air and  creates negative ions that makes us feel fresher and cleaner.

Mine is old and about the size of a pack of cigarettes.  New ones are in the market for $119. They offer a Corona Discharge Air Purification technology to create fresh air while purifying the air with a stream of charged electrons (Ions) .  This Ionizer is worn around the neck so a continuous stream of ions flows toward the face.  A round magnet rests on the back of the neck to reinforce your body’s magnetic field (which is off balance in high altitudes).  Google the word Chionizer and you’ll see a number of sites offering this product.

We also try to arrive and leave via a small airport. When we are in North Carolina we fly Delta’s commuter partner in Tri-Cities Tennessee to Atlanta or Cincinnati.  Big airports like Miami or Atlanta create a lot of stress… crowds, noise, rudeness and pollution.  This is not a good way to start or end a flight.  By starting at a small airport, there’s not much stress, people remember us and it goes smooth and easy.

Finally we meditate when we get on the plane, often during the flight and before we disembark.

We do our best to eat little or nothing and avoid hard to digest foods on these long hauls…just some pure water, fresh fruit…. sometimes a boiled egg… a few seeds and nuts are very satisfying.  Rest and avoid stress as much as you can on the journey.

Every generation has had its health cross to bear. Neanderthal Man faced the Saber Tooth Tiger.  Medieval  Europe had plagues.  Today we face fast food, stress and long flights!

It is a miracle, privilege and responsibility that we have the freedom to travel almost anywhere on this good earth we choose. This gives us the ability to broaden our horizons and contribute more to the world. These few simple tips  can reduce the negative elements of the great joy of air travel.

That longevity search an Ecuadorian  Taita Yatchak (Shaman of the highest learning) who told us there was an unoccupied valley with special healing powers.

He offered to take us there.  (More on why below).

We invited friends and started our journey at 4:30 a.m.  hiking from 10,500 feet, to 14,000 feet. Here we are getting ready to go.

After hours of climbing we descended 4,000 feet down a hidden, mud, animal trail for three hours into a virtually impenetrable cloud forest, ripped by thorns, cut by razor grass, soaked, and caked in mud.

By the time we arrived in the valley, it was just minutes before dark. We were fatigued by the high altitude, bone weary from our packs, every muscle aching from fighting all day with the sucking mud (which had regularly pulled off our boots).

We stayed in a floorless, leaky thatch hut, sleeping on dirt, no heat except the cooking fire, no running water, no nothing. The next morning, to our surprise we all felt and looked  wonderful! Those who had been injured had no sign of the injuries. We explored the valley which is perpetually wrapped in mist and fog. We swam in small icy, deep blue lagoons and did ancient exercises while the Taita Yatchak talked with us. We were continually cold, wet, dirty and cramped-all 12 of us in this tiny hut with its earthen floor.

I cannot describe how we felt except to say none of us had ever had so much fun and had such a sense of well-being.

There is something about the valley I cannot yet explain. Even at times when we were really worried about some of the party who had gone into shock from fatigue, there was never a moment of regret.

We discovered a magical quality to this Sacred Valley and even over a decade and a half after our return have found powerful emotional and physical evolutions happening to all of us. Merri and I, along with the others, feel physically stronger, more alert, more positive, more active and yet more serene than ever before in our lives.

After this journey we purchased the 962 acre Hacienda Rosaspamba and lived and studied there for nearly a year with the Taita Yatchak and his apprentices.

Living in a healthy place like Rosaspamba can help longevity.  More important is the fact that one can have longevity anywhere.  We discovered this at our other sanctuary in the Blue Ridge Mountains where we also live.  The family cemetery on our farm has five headstones with people aged 86, 91, 95, 100 and 115 at death.

The 115 year old lived from 1794 to 1909. I  wonder what type of medical insurance she had… back here in these hills. Here is that cemetery.

Merri and I have studied global health secrets for decades and have lived with healing masters from China, Tibet, the Andes and India to learn that it is not only where you live.. but how you live that creates longevity.

Longevity does not come from quadruple bypasses, pacemakers, chemo, radiation and all the modern drugs so many people use.

Up here in these mountains people in decades and centuries past labored, breathed clean air, drank pure water and ate fresh food. These were hardy mountain people who worked hard, had little, ate little and with that made the most. Life was simple and they kept it that way. Longevity was their reward.

Now is the time to be thinking about longevity.

Many of us work so hard to build financial security then lose it through lingering illness or even worse death, heart attacks – stress, diabetes -bad diet, cancer – over-aggression created by the effort.

Does this lifestyle make sense?

The answer, “No, it does not make sense” led Merri and me, many years ago, to sell our home in Old Naples, Florida, leave the stressful city and move here to our secluded Blue Ridge farm and Andean plantation.

We have learned that there are many simple secrets to longevity.  They are harder to use in busy cities.

Here are three secrets we gain from untold hours shared with clients and friends who are expert in all types of healing. These secrets come from years of experience with disciplines like acupuncture (when I first lived in Hong Kong) when they were still considered witchcraft in the Western world, and from our years of living with healers from India, Tibet and the Andes.

I share these as a layman, but one who has watched his weight melt from 220 to 150 pounds. They are shared by a 62 year old male with a pulse of 99 over 60 something and a resting heartbeat in the low 60s whose energy and stamina is high.

The secrets are not shared just to stop you from getting sick either. They are to help you have more stamina, vitality, energy, endurance as well as longevity so you can enjoy life more!

The first secret is not a secret at all, but a simple reality that most ignore.

Restrict your diet. Cut down your caloric intake. This is the only factor that I have studied that has been scientifically supported. Plus the residents in the three valleys where National Geographic documented extra longevity had caloric intakes ranging from 1,200 to 1,800 calories a day.

For example in Vilcabamba (one of Ecuador’s longevity valleys) over one person per thousand lived to be 100. In the U.S. the figure is one per 33,000! The average caloric intake in this valley (in the past) was about 1,200 calories a day.

Secret #2 is to have more than a routine.

Create ritual! Those who live extraordinarily long lives seem to share this common trait. Whatever they do they do in moderation, in a very similar way and with great gusto. For example, if they drink an ounce of whisky every day, at six o’ clock, they do not do this at five some days and eight others. They do not have a half ounce one day and two another. They tend to have one ounce at six p.m. every day. This instills discipline, keeps life simple (very important) and allows the body to get used to doing whatever it is it has to do. Take Chris Mortensen one of the oldest documented men in the 1990s who at 113 said of his weekly cigar, “If you take my weekly cigar away from I am going to die”. The anticipation and ritual of whatever pleasure he receives from this is far more life giving than the stress. The world’s oldest documented woman in the 1990s, Jeanne Clement, at age 122 drank cognac and ate a pound of chocolate a week (but never two).

Secret #3 is to remain independent, challenged, active and needed. One of the most important features that was found in every valley where people lived long lives was that old age was revered. Often people at age 100, even 110 are still active and working! Max Zimmer of Los Angeles came to the US from Austria in 1911 with only a two dollar bill. At age 103 he still had the same two-dollar bill and had built and still ran a multimillion-dollar business. One MD, who specializes in anti aging, points out that most centenarians seldom spend much time with doctors. When they finally get sick, they die quickly and with little expense. They depend on themselves to remain healthy not others. Having a good savings and investment plan for old age is also an important factor to remaining independent. Are any of these factors in your routine and plans? Most of us have to answer “no”.

This is why Merri and I moved to our farm in North Carolina and Ecuador and have worked at instilling these simple formulas (and many others) into our lives.

We live in a rapidly evolving, often frantic and polluted world. Escape from the crowds may help longevity a bit.  However escape from bad lifetsyle habits helps longevity even more.  Merri and I look forward to sharing the longevity habits we learn with you.

Ecuador is known for the longevity of many of its residents.

National Geographic published a great article, “Every Day Over 100 is a Gift” that outlined how and why residents in some Ecuador valleys like Vilcabamba live much longer (up to 130 years) than in the West.

Yesterday’s message Ecuador and global investing pointed out that May 2, 2009 was the 41st anniversary of my investing and working globally.  That message ended with my plans for sharing the next 41 years with you.

Don’t Believe it?

62? Plus 41?  103? Could this be true?  I have a great grandparent (from Wales) who lived to 106, so why not?

Expecting to live long (I mean really expecting) makes it is more likely that you will. One of the greatest health risks we have is buying into the social myth that we should retire at age 65.

Every ancient text of wisdom suggests that 50 years of age is the midpoint… the time when life becomes more spiritual, wiser and that we have 50 or  more years to go.  If you are Biblical try rereading the book of Leviticus.

I believe this.  Below you’ll see  someone who agrees!

How will you look when you are 97?

At the age of 97 years and 4 months, Shigeaki Hinohara is one of the world’s longest-serving physicians and educators. Hinohara’s magic touch is legendary: Since 1941 he has been healing patients at St. Luke’s International Hospital in Tokyo and teaching at St. Luke’s College of Nursing.

Always willing to try new things, he has published around 150 books since his 75th birthday, including one “Living Long, Living Good” that has sold more than 1.2 million copies. As the founder of the New Elderly Movement, Hinohara encourages others to live a long and happy life, a quest in which no role model is better than the doctor himself.

Energy comes from feeling good, not from eating well or sleeping a lot. We all remember how as children, when we were having fun, we often forgot to eat or sleep. I believe that we can keep that attitude as adults, too. It’s best not to tire the body with too many rules such as lunchtime and bedtime.

All people who live long — regardless of nationality, race or gender — share one thing in common: None are overweight. For breakfast I drink coffee, a glass of milk and some orange juice with a tablespoon of olive oil in it. Olive oil is great for the arteries and keeps my skin healthy. Lunch is milk and a few cookies, or nothing when I am too busy to eat. I never get hungry because I focus on my work. Dinner is veggies, a bit of fish and rice, and, twice a week, 100 grams of lean meat.

Always plan ahead. My schedule book is already full until 2014, with lectures and my usual hospital work. In 2016 I’ll have some fun, though: I plan to attend the Tokyo Olympics!

There is no need to ever retire, but if one must, it should be a lot later than 65.

Share what you know.

When a doctor recommends you take a test or have some surgery, ask whether the doctor would suggest that his or her spouse or children go through such a procedure.

To stay healthy, always take the stairs and carry your own stuff.

My inspiration is Robert Browning’s poem “Abt Vogler.” My father used to read it to me. It encourages us to make big art, not small scribbles. It says to try to draw a circle so huge that there is no way we can finish it while we are alive. All we see is an arch; the rest is beyond our vision but it is there in the distance.

Pain is mysterious, and having fun is the best way to forget it.

Don’t be crazy about amassing material things. Remember: You don’t know when your number is up, and you can’t take it with you to the next place.

Science alone can’t cure or help people.

Life is filled with incidents. On March 31, 1970, when I was 59 years old, I boarded the Yodogo, a flight from Tokyo to Fukuoka. It was a beautiful sunny morning, and as Mount Fuji came into sight, the plane was hijacked by the Japanese Communist League-Red Army Faction. I spent the next four days handcuffed to my seat in 40-degree heat. As a doctor, I looked at it all as an experiment and was amazed at how the body slowed down in a crisis.

Find a role model and aim to achieve even more than they could ever do.

It’s wonderful to live long. Until one is 60 years old, it is easy to work for one’s family and to achieve one’s goals. But in our later years, we should strive to contribute to society. Since the age of 65, I have worked as a volunteer. I still put in 18 hours seven days a week and love every minute of it.

These are some great tips and Hinohara is proof of the pudding that we can improve our chances of longevity anywhere!

Ecuador Health Tips


Ecuador health tips can help you in business and vice versa. I’ll explain how in a moment. Then we’ll look at new Ecuador real estate like this.

Merri and I are back in Cotacachi after one of those trips from you know where.

Here is something not to do. Do not have a non flyer check in bags for you!  This is something we picked up listening as we stood round the conveyor belt waiting for our bags to arrive in Quito.

We flew down on the Delta Atlanta Quito flight.  The crew was really switched on. The Captain was great… informative…came out and talked to us.  We were ready to depart slightly ahead of time…except.    A group of Medical missionaries were coming down on the same Delta flight.  They realized that there was an embargo on all early January flights to Ecuador...limit two bags per person.  They had some extra stuff to bring.

So they booked four extra people (who never intended to fly).  Those  people arrived with their two bags each…checked in…and left.

This was not a good idea.

We were ready to go ahead of time, when the system discovered those four were not on board.  Their bags had to be removed.   Of course these people had checked in early so…all the bags had to be removed from the plane to find the bags.  I suspect that there was some extra security precautions taken as well…due to the unusual nature of this.

Two hours later…we finally headed out…the runway now crowded… jets heading to Europe all  lined up ahead.

This cost another extra hour on the tarmac which put us into Quito much later than the norm…a time when the clouds come into Quito. We circled…and circled until finally we had to fly to Guayaquil for more fuel.

Then we flew back to Quito… more circling until our flight, scheduled to arrive at 9:30 pm, landed at 4:30 am the next morning.  I heard the medical missionaries talking about what they had done as we waited for our bags.

Merri, Mahananda and I had been traveling 17 hours and had two more hours to go, so I was too tired to say anything.   I believe it is a good thing that the other passengers did not hear this or those medical missionaries, who delayed the other hundred plus of us, may have needed medical treatment themselves.

Okay steam blown…I actually am getting to a point.

We arrived in Cotacachi at 6:30 am with little sleep and immediately went to work…and worked just fine all day, through till about 10 pm that night.  Though I did send my Ecuador Living subscribers a message without a link in my altered  state that I call sleep typing.

There is always so much to do when we first return. The staff are great but each person needs time with us.

Next morning we felt great and were out for our morning walk a little late..but still before most people were up.

All this took place on the same month that our first Social Security payments will arrive in our account…and we love each day of this.

In December we had a friend, an MD, do a complete set of tests.  She was pleased at the good state of our health.  Our only one problem was excessive cortisol levels in the morning…a sign of our workaholism….too much stress.

I did not really need the tests to know that I felt great and energetic…enthused and excited as each day begins.

Our doctor wanted to know what we do and there are a few things… that we have learned from healers around the world especially in Ecuador.

So I declare this Ecuador health tip week.  Each day we’ll share one really important health tip that Ecuador shamans have shared with us.

Here is Ecuador health tip #1: Don’t straddle the fence.

This most important fact has been stressed to us so many times that to me this is the most important factor for good health.  Be true to yourself!  Don’t act nice when you don’t feel that way.  Don’t eat alfalfa when you really want a Big Mac.  Let me put it another way…don’t be a phony.  Don’t live your life bound by phony rules.

Do what you love.

One Taita Yatchak explained this important tip in this way when he said.  “In the past life was simple. Every place had a black and a white zone.  If a person felt like being physical, they dressed in black and visited the black zones.  If they felt like being spiritual, they dressed in white and visited the white zones.  There was no concept that black or white were bad or good. Each was considered a valid manifestation of life.  The key was to be what you were and to associate with others of the same ilk.  Blacks did not visit with Whites and vice versa.”

Today most of us are pulled in so many directions by so many forces.  Money worries struggle with other concerns. Patriotism conflicts with religion.  We are often herded into jobs or businesses we really do not like, but we keep them and put on a brave face for the cash…medical insurance or mortgage…or kids tuition…or… I could go on and on.

These inner conflicts kill energy, stamina strength and eventually rob us of good health.

This is why we write so often…do what you love….then figure out how to make a living in the process.  It is better to be a little poor and happy…then rich and sick.  Of course the irony of life is that if you do what you love you probably won’t be poor!

One thing Merri and I love to do every day is walk around Cotacachi. There is so much going on and up here…such a nice change from the draw back we see in the USA.

Our walks are useful as well as enjoyable.  We spot the best properties the minute they go up for sale…and jump on them for our readers and real estate tours. For example this was a field where we used to take Ma for a walk.  Something is going on and this urbanization is right next to the nice homes (shown at the top of this message) that are being built in this area.
