Why Ecuador

“Ecuador has it all. Beauty, convenience, low cost and opportunity.” I wrote these words nearly fifteen years ago when Merri and I first visited this unique equatorial country as investors.

Yesterday’s message began our review of seven lifestyle foundations.

The last two messages at this site entitled Lifestyle Foundations and Ecuador Healthy Lifestyles outlined why we, at the beginning of this decade, are sharing seven key messages I have sent before…  but have update.  They reflect the fundamental values we share from the lessons we learn at this site.

This third lifestyle thought looks at why Merri and I have brought thousands of readers to Ecuador and been living and investing so much there for the past 15 years.  This messages answers the question… Why is Ecuador  a great place to be?

Ecuador-friendly

Ecuador has wonderful natural resources… in the mountains and…

Ecuador-friendly

and on the sea.

Ecuador is unique for many reasons.  One huge benefit is that it has direct sunlight 365 days a year. Ecuador’s topography ranges from sea level to over 22,000 feet. Going from the coastal plain into the mountains of Ecuador offers the same bio diversity as from the equator to the Arctic Circle.

Ecuador offers incredible luxury at reasonable prices… heart warming sweetness… breath taking beauty… health benefits… and new horizons  at every turn.

Ecuador-friendly

Ecuador is affordable for everything… such as affordable housing… even ultimate luxury.  Here is a chef creating delights at the Relais and Chateaux Spa La Mirage in the Andes and…

Ecuador-friendly

the luxurious Casa Ceibo hotel on Ecuador’s Pacific.

Having lived, worked and played there now for fifteen years, we are just beginning to realize how really special and what enormous joys and pleasures this tiny country has.

Slightly smaller than the state of Nevada, Ecuador has four highly distinct zones, the Amazon jungle basin, the Andean central highlands, the Coastal Plain and the Galapagos. Not only do these four regions offer highly different lifestyles and opportunities distinct from each other, each also offers unique sights, sounds and thrills that you cannot obtain anywhere else in the world. Yet it is all so compact!  Nothing is much more than an hour or two away.

In Ecuador you encounter cultures, knowledge, birds, plants, sights, scenes and sounds you will not find anywhere else in the world.

Yet there is even more that is hard to explain. A sweetness that lies just below the surface permeates all things and makes them somehow enjoyable in ways that are difficult to describe. Merri and I have taken over thousands of delegates to this country since we first began.

Ecuador-friendly

The…

Ecuador-friendly

people of Ecuador are…

Ecuador-friendly

warm and…

Ecuador-friendly

friendly…

Ecuador-friendly

naturally.

Ecuador-friendly

Again and again they say the same. “I don’t know what it is that I feel so good here, but I love it. I have to come back again.”

Perhaps it’s the random, jumbled, apparent lack of order in a society where things do work.

The airport is organized and gets better every time we arrive. The political system does move forward (Ecuador is South America’s oldest democracy), the legal system does work.

Perhaps it is the way things work differently there. Perhaps it is the incredibly low cost of fresh fruit, clean air and pure water.

Ecuador-friendly

Food,  of every variety, is excellent, abundant and in expensive.

Whatever it is that makes Ecuador wonderful, many of those who have accompanied us have (like Merri and me), bought homes, moved there and bettered their lives in a multitude of ways.

Perhaps it is the slight differences because like good ice cream, the nuances often say more than the obvious. Cracks in a wall, its patina and peeling paint speak more loudly than color, architecture and design. So I’ll describe the current circumstances of the country below, but written words are never enough. I’m writing the logical reasons why you might love Ecuador here, but you need to visit. Ecuador is a place for the heart and it will be your heart that rules in Ecuador, never your mind.

Ecuador-friendly

Ecuador is at the dawn of its development and has wonderful dawns like this one over the sophisticated city of…

Ecuador-friendly

Quito… the Paris of South America.

Ecuador is at a crossroads. It stands in a position where it can really rise from its third world state or sink into an even deeper time of turmoil.

There are three driving forces at work, the first being economics. The country has oil… a lot of it.   About 60% of the government’s revenue comes from oil. A new airport is being built to replace the one in Quito.

On the downside the country is in an economic mess… has defaulted on its bond debt which is a huge negative for participation in the global economy.

Another driving force is the nation’s dollarization. The idea of abandoning the sucre and using the U.S. dollar as the nation’s currency was that this will stop inflation because it limits the politicians’ ability to spend. This was a good idea and the long-term stability and much lower inflation has created will be good.  The IMF loves this as do many of the other bright boys in top western economic posts…all who have never tried to run a country surrounded by other nations that do devalue their currencies. Dollarization has been good but there remain doubts that it can survive.  If the dollar rises versus currencies in neighboring countries, then Ecuador’s exports will become uncompetitive.

Enter the third driving force, President Rafael Correa.  He has gained great popularity especially be developing indigenous connections and has spent his first years in office on a reform campaign.  Can he continue to spend and can he continue his reform are the big questions.

The man is probably sincere, but like Jimmy Carter may be overwhelmed by events. He has no political experience at all. He is inheriting an economic mess and has managed to get many people angry with him.

Ecuador-friendly

Ecuador’s President Correa is dynamic and aggressive… and accessible.  Here is a photo I took of Correa when he visited our village.

Ecuador real estate prices are not as low as they were when Merri and I began investing a decade ago, but the values are still good… and the cost of maintenance and taxes etc. place are still low.  The streets are not as safe as they were, but especially out of the city and away from the Colombian border, Ecuador is very safe… not a dangerous place.

There are enormous historic, economic, cultural obstacles to overcome. Three forces are clashing.

The first are the few very rich families, who have always been in economic and political control. Since there is no middle class, these business families have never used capital markets and have kept business ownership to themselves. Without capital markets they have depended on low cost labor rather than capital equipment. If they stick to this old paradigm, as real wages rise (especially in relation to the neighboring countries) they will become increasingly uncompetitive.

The second force is the huge number of very poor. They want change, better lives, etc., but do not understand global economics. They want change without changing and/ or evolving to fit into today’s modern industrial world. They want the goodies of the west but do not know what to do or how to integrate successfully into the global economy.

The third force is president Correa. He has promised to attack graft to help the poor and downtrodden.  But can he do this with success?

My humble opinion is that education is the only real way to make the shifts required. The country must focus its newly found incoming cash flow on education. The poor must be helped to become more productive so they can rise. My guess is the funds will go instead to handouts to quell uprisings and to more graft.  This has been the trend so far.

However the president has instituted free education to all in Ecuador… a good step.

This is hardly an optimistic opinion but regardless, there will be great opportunity in Ecuador.  If the country moves the right way, they will enjoy increased stability, productivity and we who move there can participate in helping this wonderful nation join its place in the global economy.

The zero on the roulette wheel will be law and order. If the impoverished majority make enough fuss, law and order may decline. This is always the businessman’s risk.  This risk is balanced by the peaceful nature of Ecuadorians and their strong family values.

Ecuador-friendly

Ecuador has strong spiritual and family values. Even our small village Cotacachi has two large cathedrals.

My feeling is that the unchangeable good parts will remain.  Sweet people, more sight and sounds than you can find anywhere else, exquisite biodiversity of flora and fauna. There will be a rich, ancient culture full of wisdom to mystify you and bring you back again and again. The people have an inherent sweetness that has been ingrained for thousands of years. I do not believe that this will suddenly go away. A portion of the indigenous population (the Otavalans) are perhaps the most successful indigenous community in the world. Their influence is a stabilizing factor.

Plus there is more flora, fauna, some really great Indian markets, jungle lodges, incredible fishing, hiking, sightseeing and such. The many readers who have moved to Ecuador tell me they still love living in this place, as do Merri and I. Ecuador is a great place to visit, live in or do business. There are still some real estate deals but one has to search and work at this harder than in previous years… due in part to the large number of westerners who have moved to Ecuador.

Ecuador real estate potential is enhanced by increased inflation and this is why Ecuador real estate investing makes sense. Messages at this site monitor investments in Ecuador.

The collapse of the US economy made real estate in America more affordable… but reduced income, jobs and wealth also.  This has forced the US government to stimulate the economy at the expense of the US dollar.  This will cause inflation.

This is forcing many middle class Americans to move to less expensive areas in the US and abroad.

60 million baby boomers have begun to retire.  Many of their pensions and social security will be severely squeezed by inflation, leaving these people with one of five options.

#1: Keep working
#2: Move to less expensive areas within the US
#3: Export their retirement
#4: Live in near poverty
#5: Die

This is one reason I  believe in Ecuador.  Imagine this. 60 million boomers will retire over the next 20 years. We boomers are the most spoiled group of consumers as a demographic class that has ever existed on earth. We were promised the world. We were given the world. Now the magic is about to disappear.

Assume that 10% of these boomers will decide to move to less expensive countries. That’s 6 million people. Where is the most likely place to go? Eastern Europe offers great potential but are long distances from the US.

Estimating the Number of Americans Who Move Abroad.

My estimates at 105 may also be low. An article in Barrons entitled, “A new life in Panama” by Bob  Adams tells of  a silent immigration of Americans retirees and more, seeking to  work and live in other nations.

I have been writing and speaking and urging people to consider an international life for 40 years next May. Yet the scale of the  immigration that is taking place now surprises even me.  The author of this article  did a survey with over 115,000 respondents.

They eliminated any relocating for less than two years or because of military, government or their jobs.  They discovered that 1.6 million  households have already made the decision to relocate. 1.8 million households are seriously considering relocating and 7.7 million households are somewhat seriously considering relocating. The survey suggests that in total, an astounding 10% of American households are considering relocating abroad and another 10% are considering owning a home to either vacation or live part time abroad or 20% of Americans are n the move!

More surprisingly the largest group who are making these plans are in households aged 25 to 34.

If this survey is anywhere near correct (I will assume that Barron’s vetted this at least a bit), then the wave of Americans headed abroad are larger than I believe.

So where will these Americans (Canadians, British, Australians, Kiwis and Continentals are leaving their homelands as well) go?

Canada is out…too expensive and too cold. Most people will head south.

Mexico stands to be #1, but prices there are rising quickly and there is a lot of anti-gringo sentiment.  After all there have been numerous Mexican-American wars. The building of a fence across the border will not help either.  There is a law and order crisis. Yet it’s still probably the place that will benefit the most due to location.

Cuba, when it opens, will be ripe and good as well. A great place to buy when you can assuming no negative political circumstances. The low end Caribbean is also good except for those darn hurricanes that will put lots of people off…plus many water and transportation problems and the fact that few of the islands have a real infrastructure.

Panama is good…lots of English spoken, many yanks already there, but weather is lousy if you want to be in town (hot and humid) and prices are no longer low. Ditto for Costa Rica. Central America lacks infrastructure though there are some nice gringo settlements though they are expensive. Yet we see many Americans now moving from Panama to Ecuador.

Colombia is the first nation with a progressive economy and full infrastructure after Panama and Mexico. This is a wonderful place but security will stop most from going there. If the security/drug/crime issues are resolved and image cleans up…go buy in Colombia. This will be a great opportunity.

Argentina, especially Buenos Aries should do well also. It’s further away but BA has a very European feel.

Ecuador, 3 hours and 45 minutes from the US will benefit as the first nation with a full infrastructure and really low cost of living.

If Ecuador gets just 10% of six million Americans who leave the US, imagine what this means to this nation of 11 million.  First this is more than a 5% increase in population. However look at what it means in dollars!

According to the CIA World Fact Book, Ecuador has a Gross Domestic Income of $4,300 per annum per person. That makes a total GDP of $47,300,000,000.

Imagine what happens if the 600,000 gringos have an average income of $18,000 a year per person. That adds $10,800,000,000. This is an annual income that almost equals 20% of the entire national GDP! This is one reason why Merri and I include Latin equities in our investment portfolio and are buying more and more real estate in Ecuador.

Every cloud has a silver lining and two clouds casting shade on the greenback’s value are liberal money supply and political interference to support presidential elections. The silver lining comes in the form of profits made in places where fed up Americans and Canadians decide to go when they leave home.

This is why we have purchased a hotel, an office building, 6 condos and a house, a 900+ acre hacienda plus a beach apartment in Ecuador ourselves.

In summary Ecuador’s real estate potential may depend more on how bad things become in North America rather than how good will be be in Ecuador.

Ecuador has it all… at affordable prices and is an great place to be. Ecuador is a wonderful option to investigate if you are not happy comfortable or certain of the fate of your existing home.   Ecuador is an excellent second place, with growth potential  and no matter what happens to the global economy… the sun always shines there… 365 days a year.

Learn Spanish in Three Days ONLINE

The Learn Spanish in three day course is now available online.

Read below to see why we are offering our Super Spanish course online for the first time.

Speaking Spanish is a huge benefit on its own.  You can become one of the rare North Americans who can get along in Spanish speaking countries.  You can be one of the special people who can communicate with 10 million non-English speakers in the USA.  Spanish is the second most used language in the USA.  There are more Spanish speakers than speakers of Chinese, French, German, Italian, Hawaiian, and the Native American languages combined.  According to the Census Bureau, Spanish is the primary language of nearly 50 million people in the US.  This is the largest Spanish-speaking community outside of Mexico. Only half of these speakers also speak English “very well,” and 19% do not speak Spanish at all.

You can tap into all this potential when you speak Spanish.  Yet there are more benefits.

An article in England’s leading newspaper, the Telegraph, entitled “Why learn a foreign language? Benefits of bilingualism” (1) sum up the biggest benefit of learning a second language and increased intelligence.  The article says: “Learning a foreign language is more than just a boost to your CV or handy for traveling.  It will make you smarter, more decisive and even better at English.  Physiological studies have found that speaking two or more languages is a great asset to the cognitive process.  The brains of bilingual people operate differently than single language speakers, and these differences offer several mental benefits.”

The article then explains studies that show seven cognitive advantages gained from learning a foreign language.

#1:  You become smarter
#2:  You build multitasking skills
#3:  You stave off Alzheimer’s and dementia
#4:  Your memory improves
#5:  You become more perceptive
#6:  Your decision-making skills improve
#7:  You improve your English

Does it sound impossible to learn Spanish in three days?  Yes, it is impossible when you try to learn Spanish in the old, traditional way.

Though you may choose to take more time using this course to learn Spanish, thousands of our readers have learned at our Spanish courses.

There is a scientific method of learning… proven and described in numerous best selling books that create educational jumps by making education natural, easy and fun.   This course works because it is education without stress!

This method was created and refined by the Bulgarian educational master, Georgi Lozanov, who transformed the entire Soviet educational system to such a degree that this third world country beat the USA into space.

Merri was lucky to be one of a handful of students outside of Bulgaria who were allowed to be taught this system in the early 70s.  She practiced this unique and remarkable form of education for  four decades. It was a delight!

Merri and I began integrating these techniques with other shamanic and educational tactics we had gained in our global travels and then applied them to teach Spanish in three days.

The course has been proven again and again by the thousands who have used this system.  You can read a few of the many raves we have received from delegates who have learned from the Super Thinking Spanish course we created.

Here are a few quotes from delegates of the course.

One delegate from St. Louis wrote:  Hi Gary,  Just ended forty-five years in dentistry last week, and I’m on to a new career.  What is my new career?  Still formulating, but the eye -opening,mind expanding Super-Spanish course last weekend in St. Louis surely shows me the opportunity exists to expand my horizons.

Besides having a lot of nice people to learn our new language; the methods Merri and you developed proved to be just what you said they would be.  We all and I in particular relaxed our way to new learning.  I feel so very comfortable with the basis of my new language skills that I know I will be spitting out great Spanish sentences by the time I reach Ecuador in October.  Last year I spent six weeks in Ecuador and now I plan on conversing with the people.

Today’s excerpt of your newsletter really hit home. You do what you say you will. There are no surprises or hidden sales tricks. The only tricks are beneficial to our learning.  Thank you for a wonderful experience that I was quite unable to grasp how you would pull it off.  You did, however, and I look forward to other courses that you offer, and I have absolutely no doubt they also will work beneficially.  Best regards, Denis Molloy.

Another wrote about the Super Spanish course:   Buenos Dias, here is a testimonial for Super Thinking-Super Spanish.  Please feel free to use all or part in promotions for the course.  In addition, you may give my email address to any prospect “on the fence” about enrolling.  Yesterday, in Cotacachi, Ecuador, I finished Super Spanish.  I had high expectations for the course and they were exceeded.

After three days, I can speak Spanish in complete sentences. In simple conversations, such as buying groceries or ordering a meal, I can make myself understood. I think that’s incredible!

Although I am far from the competence level of a native speaker, I feel I’ve taken a giant step forward in learning Spanish so that I can experience the people and culture of Ecuador.  The foregoing benefits would have more than justified the time and money I invested in Super Spanish.  And learning some Spanish was not the most important benefit I got from the course.

Prior to leaving the USA, I had felt for some time that the pace of life there was unhealthy for me (and for most people) and I did nothing about it.

I’ve thought about the pace issue during the course.  One of the key elements Merri Scott designed into Super Spanish is placing the student in the optimal state for learning.  In class, the past three days, I’ve been re-introduced to guided journeys and introduced to the calming effects of Baroque music (www.sundaybaroque.org).  What a blessing! I’m inclined to make one or both a daily part of my life.   Rob Christi.  Cotacachi, Ecuador

Another attendee from a course wrote:   “I took this incredible class a few weeks ago, and I would like to tell anyone that is interested, that it is an amazing three days of learning with lots of laughs included. You leave everyday wanting to learn more and are so excited to do so.

“Other Spanish classes and tutoring made us feel like it would take forever to get to the point where we could put it into practice, but this method gave us a more fluent use for everyday life almost immediately AND the confidence to use it.  It is a fantastic way to show people how much they know and give confidence to learn and use Spanish creating a momentum.

“They made learning Spanish easy and fun in a very relaxed, comfortable atmosphere.  I would definitely recommend this course.  Even if you know some Spanish, this helps make it easier because of the less stress that no verb conjugations gives you.  This gives you more confidence in yourself to try and speak it more.

“The stress free atmosphere and tons of interaction and participation were very conducive to learning.  The relaxation techniques alone are worth the price.  The fact that I can now feel more comfortable conversing in Spanish with my new friends and neighbors is priceless.  Muchas, muchas gracias.”

“I loved the relaxed environment.  I picked up quite a lot of new vocabulary.  I found this course very informative about how the language works, how I can make sentences and understand others better!  Muchas Gracias!  I had a call from Telcel (the local phone company) after our second class and I was able to speak and understand them for the first time. Despacio (meaning slowly) … a great word!  Everyone should take this course before they pick up bad habits.”

“I liked how simply the course was organized and the positive attitude about learning.  Thank you so much for helping me to learn Spanish!”

“I liked the laid back yet professional approach.  I highly recommend this new, relaxing method of learning Spanish,  I feel a lot more confident in the delivery of my words and sentences. It was taught in an excellent and very professional way.

“It was a very enjoyable class.”

How The Course Works

The first tactic is to use Baroque music in the learning process.  At least three best selling books, “Superlearning”, the “Mozart Effect” and “Superlearning 2000” have revealed insights about how to learn and think more powerfully based on systems drawn from the Bulgarian educational master, Dr. Georgi Lozanov.  Merri Scott was among just a few who learned directly from Lozanov.

The second tactic uses 17 unique lessons to provide Spanish fluency in a short time.   Let me prove to you how this tactic works by teaching you hundreds of Spanish words in less than 30 seconds.

Here is the proof.

“Most words in English that end in ION are almost identical, just pronounced differently.  For example action is accion, education-educacion, manipulation- manipulacion, etc.”

There you have it.  How long did it take you to read the sentence?  You now know hundreds of Spanish words that you will never forget.

See examples of the words you already know below.

How long would have taken you to memorize all those words?  How soon would you have forgotten them?

This is just one of seventeen Spanish lessons in the course.

The next lesson teaches how to pronounce each of the nouns.

Then, the third lesson teaches almost as many verbs, almost as quickly.

The fourth lesson shows how to avoid conjugating verbs by sticking with the infinitive (far easier than it sounds).  This simple lesson leaves a person sounding like a Spanish professor without ever conjugating a verb.

Lesson five shows how to sound infinitely polite and yet get almost anything desired in Spanish.

Lesson six gives valuable connectors and the seventh lesson triples the Spanish capacity with three words for “yesterday,” “now” and “tomorrow”.

By the end of three days you feel comfortable speaking Spanish.

Plus the system is Impro-Dynamic.  This means your Spanish keeps getting better even though you do not seem to be studying… practicing… or speaking Spanish.

I was amazed by this as I traveled back and forth from the USA to Ecuador.  The longer I was away from Ecuador… the better my Spanish became.  My second language was automatically improving The self improving feature comes because you learn to create Spanish sentences rather than remember them.  The portion of the brain that creates is more powerful than the portion that recalls.  When your mind creates something… it owns it!  You do not have to remember .

During the course you learn 4005 Spanish words that you already know .

You then learn how to create Spanish sentences from these words.

Throughout the course you learn how to pronounce the sentences you create.

When the course ends… the mind keeps working… and creating… so next time you begin to speak Spanish you’ll be surprised .  You improve even though you have not actively worked on your lingual skill.

Due to the difficulty of getting groups together to learn this valuable technique, we are testing an online beta program for subscribers to use the Super Spanish course at home.   This is a beta test and is available only this week, June 5 to 11, at the highly reduced price of $79.

I’ll be in touch personally via email with each person who signs up for this course to see how it works or what is required to make it better.  Once this test is complete, we plan to offer the program on a larger scale and at a much higher price.

The course has our, full satisfaction or money back, guarantee.  Try Super Spanish for 60 days.  If not fully satisfied, simply let us know for a full refund.

Here are more testimonials from previous Super Spanish Courses.

Maggie wrote: It didn’t really seem possible that we would be speaking and understanding Spanish in only 3 days but the course made it happen in a very supportive learning environment.  I would highly recommend this course for anyone wishing to learn “practical Spanish”.  The teaching methods, use of relaxation, the use of native Spanish speakers for pronunciation and the teachers themselves who were approachable and helpful and always positive made this a very valuable class.

This course improved my self confidence in my ability to learn and retain a language.  It was presented with genuine enthusiasm, great energy and the style of learning is very effective. Gracias!  It was a great experience.

Nadine wrote: “Just spent the last 3 days in the most wonderful learning environment learning Spanish.  What an amazing learning experience!!  First day out of class and I could not stop thinking in Spanish WOW!!  I am amazed by how much I learned, retained and how much more is showing up now that I am out of class.  And the best part is THERE WAS NO STUDYING!! Indeed this is Super Thinking!!!  I would highly recommend this to anyone that has ever had a desire to learn another language or learn anything in record time.

And a few days after that ….  As I went through my day, just hanging out with my son, I could see myself starting to think in Spanish.  At first I thought it was amusing but as it continued and increased I thought “My goodness this is really remarkable amazing” It was really an effortless unfolding.  I wasn’t at any point “trying” to think in Spanish, just words I knew would fly across the screen in my mind.  And then this afternoon, my son cuddled up on the couch to watch some cartoons on his ipad and was watching Peppa Pig in Spanish…hmm coincidence?  I think not, I’m radiating Spanish so much that my son is being influenced!  Thanks a million again.  This weekend the best learning experience of my life!!

If you have ever had a desire to learn Spanish this is the way to do it!  By the end of the first day I had more confidence and more practical ability than I had from any previous courses I had taken.  It was fun and relaxed and full of laughter.  You will leave this class excited to use what you have learned.  Rather than leaving overwhelmed with how much you have yet to learn and master, you are equipped with the knowledge and know how to go out and communicate as well as the excitement to do it!”

Gary noted:  “The whole approach is positive and conducive to learning at a level that benefits ALL participants.  It is not intimidating and does not set up a pass/fail atmosphere.  The presenters are terrific and the results unbelievable.  It was relaxed, informal, friendly and effective.”

Twila said:  “This class provided a very refreshing and relaxed way of learning.  The atmosphere felt very safe to say the words you were practicing.  I learned a lot in a way that will make it easy to apply.  Starting with conversation is way more fun.  How quickly you can learn!  It was a great group, great instructors and great stories.

The atmosphere in the classroom was so relaxed that learning Spanish felt like a breeze and not like a painful task.  The relaxation exercises are really conducive to language learning.  We learned A LOT in a short time and it was fun and the environment was non-threatening.”

Brigitte sent this:  “Buenos Dias, Suzanne. su clase de espanol es excelente! Muchas Gracias!
I have already done what you suggested and went into the program listening to the music and going over the lessons.  I know: Repetition……reinforcement…..thinking in the new language….it’s all part of it.  I loved your course and will certainly recommend it to friends.  Who knows….I might feel the urge and have the opportunity to repeat it at your beautiful place in Puerto Aventuras…..Quien sabe? Hasta otro dia y saludos a su familia.”

Marie wrote:  “I would highly recommend this course.  The amount covered in 3 days is amazing!  All with no stress.  The correlation lessons and pronunciation practice has greatly reduced my anxiety to go out and use my Spanish.  I really enjoyed the whole process and thank you for the take away tools.”

Ecuador Birding Business

Ecuador Birding Business

Ecuador birding is big business that can create a business opportunity for you… maybe even more.

Yesterday’s message looked at how birds reflect patterns of nature.  Perhaps this is why bird watching is such a popular sport.

Merri and I love watching Ecuador’s birds on the beach, the…

Frigate Birds as they swarm and…

ecuador-birding

pelicans sliding silently on a coastal cushion of air.

In the Andes the hummingbirds… flit into…

our hotel’s courtyard.

ecuador-birding

Ecuador’s Amazon has an abundant variety  of bird life as well.

ecuador-birding

Here is a reader’s question about birding in Ecuador… thoughts on where to see them… and how to profit from Ecuador birds.

The reader wrote: Does Cuenca have enough birds and rain forest for an avid nature lover?  I would want to experience these daily not just on weekends or occasionally?

My reply: Cuenca has some great birding nearby but is definitely not a rain forest.

Cuenca is more dry than wet.  The rain forests are a bit away.  In the nearby Cajas National park, there are more than 150 species of birds. There is a link on where to check for bird watching routes in Cajas.

There are even better places to watch birds. The closest is a cloud forest only an hour and a half from Quito in Mindo.

ecuador-birding

You can watch the clouds walk across the tree tops in the Mindo cloud forest.

Due to its critically important role in the conservation of numerous rare and endemic species, Mindo was designated South America’s first Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International in 1997. Mindo is an area of historic ornithological studies, where early collectors and ornithologists discovered or collected many species.

Mindo lies within the Chocó Endemic Bird Area (EBA) and Chocó Biogeographic Region, which is considered one of the world’s richest biogeographic areas. This area supports the largest number of restricted-range birds of any EBA in the Americas, over 50 species being endemic to the area.
ecuador-birds

The Cock of the Rock often observed in Mindo and Intag.

Mindo is also home to the greatest number of endemic montane birds of any place in the world (Birds of Ecuador, Ridgley and Greenfield).
2000-2005 Christmas Bird Count (CBC) – sponsored by the Audubon Society.  Mindo has been among the top three highest bird counts in the world for the last six  years. This is with over 2,000 locations participating. Each location is a 25 kilometer radius, and the count lasts for 24 hours. Mindo had the highest count in the year 2000 with 350 bird species recorded, and in past years has exceeded the 400 bird species mark.

This creates bird watching business opportunity.

Ecuador also offers many exciting export ideas based around bird life.

Our Ecuador export course helps you learn how to take unusual products, make them unique and then adapt them to a niche market.

Take for example this excellent botanical artist, Monteros.

We’ll see art from Montero.

Artist Montero produces exquisite watercolors for as little as $25 such as those below

He did this wonderful piece for us. This painting is great art and is exportable as is…but…to my way of thinking this is just the beginning.

I took this piece and made it my business card!

My US address and number are on the reverse side. The art, color separations, printing and paper (recycled velum) are superb. These are the nicest business cards I have ever had.

Now comes the adaptation that makes this product utterly unique. One of our guests here is a globally known naturalist and birding guide. My suggestion is that he creates a program for his bird watching clients.

Monteros paints their favorite bird. The water color (or in oil) is theirs to hang in their office or home and then they also get business cards with the same unique picture.

We are seeing more and more success by delegates from our import export course.

Former delegate Bonnie Keogh built a successful Ecuador export business and now conducts our Ecuador export tours reports:

ecuador-exports-bonnie

Here is Bonnie with Consuelo at our hotel Meson de las Flores where our Ecuador export tour delegates stay.

Ecuador exports are a fun way to gain a second income, early retirement or build a substantial business. There is great opportunity and this type of business really helps the poor here as well.

It’s not often the case that a quick 1.5 hour drive takes you from a bustling metropolis to a virtually unspoiled nature reserve. Yet, that’s what you get in Ecuador. The country has 40 nationally protected areas, covering a staggering 12.2 million acres or 18.81% of Ecuador’s landmass.  And these protected areas do not even take into consideration the country’s numerous protected forests, known locally as “bosques protectores”. These represent natural reserve areas that are subject to a limited economic activity but whose primary purpose is the preservation of biodiversity and sources of natural springs and lakes. In a world where unspoiled nature is getting scarcer by the day, guess what is proving to be the biggest attraction of Ecuador’s tourism and expat sectors?

The other big attraction of Ecuador is the comparatively low prices.  Unlike in other countries, where properties in beautiful locations are already trading at a scarcity premium, Ecuador actually offers eco-properties at bargain prices.

Natural beauty and all that at bargain prices – how could an investor possibly go wrong with such a combination?

And because there is such a staggering array of nature reserves in Ecuador, you still have a chance to find one or the other truly undiscovered gem among the country’s protected regions. The kind of area that a few years down the road, people will say, “Oh, had I only known at the time so that I could have gotten in while it was still a bargain-priced ground floor opportunity.”

Learn more about our Ecuador export tour here.

Everyone has heard of the Galapagos Islands, the place that is now visited by 170,000 visitors per year.  Still, few people have heard of Mindo yet. Mindo is currently visited by just 20,000 foreign tourists per year. Type it into Google and you’ll notice that this place is only just being discovered. Our bet is that, the visitor numbers of Mindo will catch up with Galapagos.

Why?

First the cost difference is phenomenal.  Second, Mindo is a nature reserve wonderland that has few equals.

If anyone has ever even heard of the place, it’s usually because of the unusually high diversity among birds and plants. There are…

–    430 species of birds (more than on the entire North American continent; put another way, Mindo makes up 0.002% of the world’s land mass but 10% of the world’s bird species are found there)

–    370 species of orchids (out of the 4,000 species found in Ecuador, which makes it the country with the world’s highest number of orchid species)

–    300 species of butterflies

Mindo is actually a town, a river and an area. It’s 48 miles due northwest of Quito. The area is at 4,200 feet above sea level, which makes it the mid-point elevation between the highland Quito area and the coast.

Mindo is synonymous to harmony in nature.  It is a place for deep relaxation and provides an escape opportunity from modern-day life’s stress.  Yet, there is ample mobile phone coverage, Internet access and opportunities for community services.

Holidaymakers and tourist industry investors alike have recently started to realize what potential this area holds. The scenery appeals to photographers and explorers for its outstanding panoramic views. Eco-tourism in general is booming, and bird-watching in particular is one of the world’s fastest growing recreational activities. Many birdwatchers come from a wealthy demographic, i.e. it’s not backpackers who are pursuing this sport but well-off people in their 40s, 50s and 60s (or older).

Mindo is also a perfect area for anyone wanting to keep fit and entertained: Horseback riding, mountain biking, tubing and rafting can all be organized locally, just as much as you can go hiking, fishing and swimming. All this is set in a valley that is a subtropical cloud-forest and which is ideally situated between the upper temperate zone and the lower humid tropical forests. Mindo is made for tourism development.
It is ideally suited to invite your kids and grand-children on an adventure-filled excursion into the safe rainforests of Mindo, with activities such as hiking along trails, jumping off small waterfalls, river walking along the many streams, tubing down the major waterways, or just taking in the natural surroundings.

Best of all, it’s the natural playground of Quito. Most of the drive to Mindo is a scenic route on a well-maintained road. The government is continuously improving the area’s infrastructure, such as installing a new electricity distribution grid, improving the town’s police station and providing it with a new patrol car and motorcycles and by setting up an organic waste management facility. Private investors have started to move in. A number of weekend-home developments have sprung up, and new hotels and restaurants have opened. Nevertheless, Mindo is still a charmingly tiny and unspoiled village.

Mindo offers you all of the following:

– Owning a property set within pristine nature.

– A retirement home where you can afford staff, with first world health facilities just 90 minutes drive away in Quito.

– The ideal place in which to learn Spanish (or, where to give English classes to local children if you like volunteering work).

– Clean air, fresh water, fresh organic fruits and a de facto detox lifestyle without even having to pay a premium for it (costs of living are extremely low actually).

– Just about any outdoor sport you can imagine.

– Being in a bird-watching paradise year-round.

– Benefiting from Ecuador being an up-and-coming tourism and retirement haven (and from its new international airport in Quito).

– A base from where to explore Ecuador and South America

– And countless more aspects, which are best explored by doing a little tour of the area…

Yet, despite all its attractions, Mindo is still all a ground-floor opportunity. A yearly total of 20,000 foreign tourists is hardly noticeable. Investing in Mindo is a bit like investing on the French Riviera in the 1950s, buying a historic apartment in Venice in the 1970s, or a villa in Costa Rica in the 1980s. The attractions and the beauty are already apparent, but it has not yet become fashionable to have a property there and few people have heard of it.

Needless to say, this is the time to get in on the action.

This is why we included Mindo in our Quito/Mindo real estate tour.  As part of our Quito real estate tour, we’ll take you where Quiteños increasingly go to have a nice time with their family when they fancy a weekend break.

Mindo will become more accessible when the new airport in Quito opens in 2010.   This is why Mindo is likely to become one of the iconic cornerstones of the upcoming marketing campaigns of the Ecuadorian Ministry of Tourism. With its world class appeal, Mindo is bound to become better known.

What this means for property investors?

The formula is quite simple:

–    With growing local and international tourism, there is an opportunity to create rental properties for extra income.

–    Because of the purchasing power of nearby Quito, holiday homes in the Mindo area are set to increase in value over the years to come.

–    Anyone fancying the idea of living in unspoiled nature but with the hustle and bustle of a proper city nearby, should check out the option to actually live in the Mindo area.

The two areas are worlds apart in one way, but they are connected in many other ways. That is why we have combined a tour of Quito with a detour to Mindo.

Ecuador is a small country, and personal contacts go a long way.  That’s where Carlos Tobar comes in, the man who will be guiding the entire Quito/Mindo Real Estate Tour.

Carlos is assembling a preview list of available properties (including one special deal that has not been offered before). We’ll pass the list on to you as soon as it’s ready. You now know what’s special about Mindo in general. And you’ll soon get a much clearer idea about the kind of property deals available in this area.

We just added four South coast Ecuador tours that can help you gain extra savings with a multi tour pack.

These extra tours create a dilemma for me. See how below.

Here are our multi tour adventure discounts.

Two Pack… 2 seminar courses & tours $998 Couple  $1,349 Save $149 on couple

Three Pack… 3 seminar courses & tours   $1399 Couple  $1,899 Save $98 single or $348 on a couple or more

Six Pack… 6 seminars courses & tours  $2,199 Couple $3,099 Save $795 single or $1,395 on a couple or more

These four new south coast tours and our six pack tour price create a bit of a crisis here.

As you can see above a six pack costs $3,099.  This is already a really low price for a tour that last up to 21 days (under $150 a day).

But as you will see below, our International Club membership which allows you and a guest to attend up to 56 courses and tours in 2010  (fees would be $40,947 for all these courses individually) is only $2,999.

Which would you choose… 6 courses and tours for $3,099 or those same 6 courses and tours plus 50 more for $2,999?

“Duh,” I said when this was pointed out to me.

So our only solution is to raise the International Club membership to $3,500… still a terrific deal… but $501 more than before.

Save $37,457…plus $501.  I will not raise the International club fee until January 2010. Enroll in the International Club now at the original fee of $2,999.

You may well wonder why I would make such an offer and ask why the cost is so low? Let me answer this question frankly and from the heart.

First, it helps us do a better job for you. We feel greatly enriched when we can really help our clients improve their lives. We have learned through years of experience the best way to do this is to meet with you regularly. We can best help you learn how to improve your health and wealth through continual expansion of knowledge.

Second, we gain enormous fulfillment from the many friendships we form through the years. Our friends have enriched our lives tremendously. Let me explain this in more detail.

As a member, you will be part of our international family that meets intensively over the next year to examine ways we can make our lives better. Our goal is beyond just having money. Our goal is to have quantum wealth… good health… wealth and fulfillment through service.

Though I give all course delegates my very best, I cannot help but to do a better job for those who come again and again. As we meet often; your particular wants, needs and desires become clear, and it is easier for me to point you in the right direction.

Another phenomenon is that repeat delegates help each other! They get to know one another, help each other learn, share their insights, make contacts and gain more wealth.

Out associates in Ecuador, are experienced business people who live or work and conduct our real estate and export courses.  They can also act as your local backup for the business.

Lifestyle for Two. There is more! I have learned at my courses that many repeat delegates were couples.

We want couples! As a member of the program, you are entitled to bring another person to every single course or tour. The cost for that extra person will be ZERO!  You can bring whomever you wish. Bring your spouse, a friend, son or daughter, partner, accountant, adviser. You can bring the same person each time or a different person, whomever you choose to accompany you. (Accommodations and air fares relating to the courses are not included for members, delegates or their guests.)

Won’t you join us in this exciting club and share Merri’s and my lifestyle for the next year? We look forward to seeing you at as many courses as possible and sharing this wonderful world of abundance and well being with you!

Cotacachi Real Estate Progress

Cotacachi real estate has a new positive bent.

One benefit of Cotacachi real estate is the beauty of Mt. Cotacachi and Mt. Imbabura.

cotacachi-real-estate

Mt. Cotacachi towering above the village.

Ecuador-real-estate

This rich agricultural land provides the community well.  Yet their beauty contains a weakness as well.  The splendid views are wonderful as Ma and I know as we hike these mountains often.

cotacachi-real-estate

Yet the views have attracted developers who can create a commercial benefit by building houses and condos on this agricultural land that has been used by the indigenous to farm and graze for millennia.

A reader recently sent this note about the recent article at our site, Ecuador Real Estate Search:

Gary, I came… I saw… I conquered.  The phrase is not “I conquered over the internet and then flew down”.

The biggest most important factor is first to come… The second is to look and see.   Then conquer.

The Shamans haven’t seemingly influenced the western need to conquer, and one can see from the architecture in the new buildings that the old western mind is still very much intact, and unchanged.  God help Ecuador survive the western mind and invasion.

This reader has a good point. Conquered is not a very good word and that word and the romantic cultures have clung to this cultural concept since they were uttered, the Spanish, the British, the French and now the North Americans.

Adapt and evolve might be better words and philosophies for the world’s good.

Technology and population growth pretty well assure further integration of the global economyand this is good… if  we learn the best from one another.  Share ideas and ideals.  Enhance and respect one another’s cultures as we merge.

Merri and I feel strongly about this and though we have done a lot  (the growth of humanity will cause a continuation of the evolution of the global market) to introduce North Americans to Ecuador, we overtly and subtly work hard to make the integration a better one than the Europeans had in North America.

In the thirty years we have lived abroad, Merri and I have never lived with other Americans. We lived in the local community and always felt our horizons broadened.  Plus we hope we enhanced our neighbor’s lives as well.

As more and more of our readers settled in Cotacachi, we began working with Cotacachi elders several years ago to bring the locals and expats closer together.  Our first effort was support of the Cotacachi World Football Cup (what the elders suggested attracted the greatest number of local population).

We also deeply honor the local wisdom and feature numerous shamanic tours to help our readers learn more about the ancient wisdom.

One of our efforts in this way has been worry over developments on the agricultural hills above Cotacachi.

There are at least three such developments I know of and we have long feared that this type of developments could create problems with the indigenous community.

The warnings are now coming to fruition.  Recently there was a meeting in Cotacachi due to concerns about water rights and pollution created by these developments.  Last week the community met for the first time regarding concerns of developments in the agricultural lands above Cotacachi.

Our events coordinator, Alberto Verdezoto, attended the meeting and reports:

Sr. Gary,   I went to the meeting of the mayor and representatives of different communities around Cotacachi.  Some people have started asking the new administration in Cotacachi, what they will do about the expat growth.

The answer given was that the administration will protect the environment and provide support to the poorest, support to ecotourism and viability.

The mayor gave a historical overview of the whites and how for many years they discriminated against the comunidades (local indigenous), but today there is good cross-cultural exchange among the mestizo and indigenous.

The City Council reported that they have been having very informal meetings among themselves, about the positive and negative of the arrival of foreigners, who are coming to live in Cotacachi and surrounding areas.

The main concerns of the municipality are:

That foreigners are located in rural areas, close to the city.

The people living in Cotacachi and communities are concerned, because foreigners buy land at high prices and thus Cotacachenos and the natives may not in future buy back a property. These high prices, harm families planning for a future purchase.

The sale by farmers of land at high prices affects the social-economic harmony and and the appearance of the indigenous worldview.

The mayor also stated that the government has a land acquisition program, for awarding the Indigenas, that they are engaged in agriculture, but as farmers sell their land at high prices, this interferes with this program.

He also stated that the previous administration, did not plan for the arrival of foreigners in Cotacachi.  He said that the municipality has the power to create municipal ordinances to protect the good life of all citizens, both local and foreign and planning controls and even prohibit development projects affecting the social, economic and cultural development of the area.

He talked about how the property taxes that are being charged are very low, but these will be revised according to economic facts based on water, electricity, telephone costs.

The municipality is conducting a territorial reorganization plan, to plan for better integration of land use. He also suggested creating an office of appraisals to help people who want to buy property, so they know the real value of the property. This he suggested could help stop price gouging.

There will see future meetings with municipal authorities, representatives of the local communities and new residents to  address these issues and create projects for better integration of the cultures,

Regards,  Alberto Verdezoto Vallejo

Political and business leaders have spoken with me about these concerns for some time and finally this first public forum can help make everyone aware of these concerns.

Rising Ecuador real estate prices are not rising just because of North American immigration. The wonderful fact is, as the global economy solidifies we can all find it easier to live, work and do business in nice places.  This means that nice places will attract more people and prices will rise.

We see this fact with rising prices in the Blue Ridge.  Many locals complain how we Floridiots (the name given to us Floridians who have moved to the Blue Ridge) have pushed up local prices.

Merri and I watched Naples real estate skyrocket because it was a nice place.  Many old time Neapolitans had to pack up and leave because they could no longer afford the inflated prices.  I lived in London for years and return there often… where real estate prices are among the highest in the world.

Are London real estate prices so high because Londoners who have lived there long term have pushed up prices? Not a chance.  London is a nice place in many people’s view so wealthy people from many other nations buy property in London. This causes the prices to rise.

Ditto for Wales.  The Welsh have long demonstrated and created havoc over the fact that Londoners buy weekend cottages and push their prices up.

This phenomenon is not new. I lived in Hong Kong in the late 1960s and early 1970s and watched real estate demand soar… because for many reasons Hong Kong is a nice place to be.

Ecuador is a nice place and right now prices are low.  This fact will continue to attract Americans, Canadians and we see Europeans, Aussies and Kiwis coming as well.

No one likes inflation… but global government deficit spending, growing global populations and technology make real estate inflation in nice places  a fact.  If the gringos did not come to Cotacachi and buy real estate, the people of Quito would… and in fact they also do.

However it is wise for immigrants in Ecuador or anywhere to respect the local community and merge gently with friendliness, grace, humility and willingness to compromise, adapt and blend in.

In the Imbabura Province cooperating with the indigenous is pretty important.  Many foreign legions have visited these areas we call Cotacachi with just the thought “conquer” on their minds… from the Inca to the Spanish…  and the Japanese (Mitsubishi tried mining there and failed because of local opposition).

The local culture is still here… strong… vibrant… proud.  Thank God!

The Canadian Ascendant Mining Company tried to ignore Cotacachian protests and environmental concerns.  This is the result of their arrogance… the remains of their headquarters.

cotacachi-real-estate

This happened in Chalguayacu Bajo, Cotacachi County, Ecuador, in 2005.   The Ascendant mining camp was completely destroyed,  an act by more than 300 local people from approximately 20 communities from the area.  There were no thefts of company goods. No one was hurt. The people made their will known.

It is our prayer that the many North Americans coming down will take heed and respect and work with the local population.

First, this is the intelligent thing to do.  We drown in health, social and economic problems in North America.   Local Ecuadorian wisdom often offers a better way.  Their food is better… their culture friendly and easy going.    Ecuadorian lifestyles and philosophies have much to offer.

I suspect that North Americans will have to learn to respect Cotacachi’s  wonderful culture the hard way.

Hopefully wisdom, cooperation and the municipality will lead a better way…. but if not there could be some tension.

To ignore and try to impose a new will upon a solid majority is crazy.   The reader mentioned above above wrote: “God help Ecuador survive the western mind and invasion.” So for over the last 500 years, They have done pretty well on their own.

Cuenca Boutique Hotel

A great Cuenca boutique hotel is the Boutique Hotel Mansion Alcazar.

Boutique Hotel Mansion Alcazar is a beautiful sample of the unparalleled Ecuadorian Republican luxury style. The 19th-century house was restored to its original splendor and has been designed to be a home for visitors staying in the city for business or for pleasure.

The hotel looks a lot like our hotel Meson de las Flores from the outside.  Here is Meson.

Ecuador Real Estate Search

When you start your Ecuador real estate search, remember a thought that has been around for quite awhile…”Veni Vidi Vici.”

I came… I saw… I conquered.  The phrase is not “I conquered over the internet and then flew down”.

The biggest most important factor is first to come… The second is to look and see.   Then conquer.

Yesterday’s message shared a reader’s question at Ecuador B&B Search.

The reader also asked:  How much time would be needed to find a place and settle the purchase?  On average 9 days, or a few weeks?

Possibly in the first few years we`d be unable to visit for more than 5 weeks of the year.   Our biggest problem is for our employer to give us any time off from work .  It`s not possible to have any unpaid leave.  My husband thinks we need to go in 2 months because if we wait 12-14 months the prices may have escalated significantly .  What do you think?

Here is my reply.  I do not think this is a realistic plan. You should not be rushed to buy.  Better to take a year or two and use your vacations for trips. Look.  Get a feel of Ecuador and Ecuador’s real estate market… then rent or buy.

Merri and I spent six years, living, traveling and looking at Ecuador real estate before we made our first Ecuador real estate purchase. Good values are found by knowing the market… being available to buy and being able to make a good offer when a good deal comes through.

You’ll have a better chance of buying as a well informed buyer later than rushing to buy earlier when you are ill informed!

Merri and I recently bought an estate in Florida. This process took almost a year and we knew Florida really well to begin!  We had lived in Florida for more than 20 years and Merri over 30 years… yet  before we purchased we researched, traveled all over the state and look at hundreds of properties before making our first offer (which was turned down).

Our websites and daily messages can help you learn the rules about buying Ecuador real estate.  Visiting… seeing for your self and experiencing Ecuador helps you learn the exceptions to your rules.  So use the intelligent order that was given to us so many millenniums ago.   “Veni Vidi Vici.” come… see… conquer. This is the way.

Ecuador B&B Search

There are many Ecuador B&B opportunities around… but you must think of one important factor as you search for an Ecuador Bed and Breakfast.

A reader recently sent me this note:

We are Canadians with some savings and a desire to leave the rat race  behind and enjoy a higher quality of life.  We are 36 & 39 years old and would love to move part-time or full time to Ecuador.  Nature, rain forests, cloud forests, birds and animals of the region are of high interest to us.  We also love the idea of Cuenca, a colonial city.  Due to our age we could not retire but would need to work and have some income.  From what I read it sounds like we would need less than $10,000 annually to live a modest lifestyle.

We definitely would not want to hire a gardener, driver or housekeeper which sounds very commonplace.   We are thinking of buying a 3,000-4,000 square foot house and turn it into a bed and breakfast with a small cafe and gardens.   We are thinking of coming down in the next 2-18 months to purchase a place.  We need advice in putting this dream into reality.

I figure the B & B would need to be in downtown Cuenca or in the region above Quito somewhere.  I was also surprised when you told the story of the man who owned the 14 room small hotel but did not even make $1,000 per month which meant he barely ever had a room rented.

Our biggest problem is for our employer to give us any time off from work .  It`s not possible to have any unpaid leave.

Our group real estate tours to make your search more efficient.  We’ll conduct over 40 of them in 2010.

My husband thinks we need to go in 2 months because if we wait 12-14 months the prices may have escalated significantly .  What do you think ?.

My reply began “I think you’ll get a better price by taking your time… not rushing.”

Yes, it is possible to live on $10,000 a year in Ecuador.

See how Canadians Larry & Shirley live for $700 a month at Ecuador Cost of Living is Low.

Larry & Shirley moved into their new condo at Vistazul last year, just 133 steps from the beach.

But the question is, can an expat with an Ecuador B&B or Ecuador hostel make any money?

The answer is… as with all businesses… marketing is a really important factor.

The 14 room hotel that the reader above asked about was in an out of the way place and the guy had no relation with travel agents nor a web site or any advertising at all.

Yesterday’s message showed how a subscriber has just developed this Cuenca Ecuador hostel.

cuenca-ecuador-hostel

This owner is out hustling… contacting services like ours offering discounts to our readers to get business started.  When Merri and I bought Meson de las Flores, it was empty most of the time.  We had to write about the hotel and talk to seminar promoters and travel agents to get the business coming in.  It has taken a couple of years with a lot of work to build up the occupancy factor.

If you plan to have an Ecuador B&B… the first question to ask… AND ANSWER is where will and how will I market to get my guests?

Smalltown USA – Revisited

Smalltown USA – Revisited

Finally we get to revisit Smalltown USA.

Over these last seven years, we have learned to respect and heed our intuition even more.

When logic and intuition come together, it is a beautiful event that goes beyond wealth… calm… richness and fulfillment.

As Merri and I begin our 42nd year of international investing and business seminars and publishing, we gain great comfort and enthusiasm from the  feel of how our efforts in this last seven year cycle progressed.

You’ll also be happy because this progress creates extra value and some enormous savings for you.

First we are excited that in this upcoming seven we can expand our focus on Small town USA as well as global investing and Ecuador.

Yesterday’s message looked at how the broader measure of unemployment in the US is now 17.5% and why living in Ecuador can help those who want to retire or are unemployed.   That message also reviewed the importance of seven year cycles in human affairs.

So let’s continue looking at seven years points of interest.

Seven years ago this site also began a “Great Places to Be” series that focused on Ecuador BUT ALSO looked at Smalltown USA.

We began to zero in on Cotacachi Ecuador, Ashe County North Carolina and places like Lake Placid, Florida and Bucksnort, Tennessee as great places to live and invest.

Here is an article that we posted seven years ago in 2002 about Lake Placid in Central Florida as a great place to be.

One reader who read that article shared with me that he really cleaned up from that advice.  He invested in orange groves in that Central Florida area and evidently his profits soon exceeded his investment.

We however grew so busy in organizing our Ecuador efforts we had little time to keep up with Smalltown USA beyond fixing up our farm here in the Blue Ridge.  Smalltown USA in Lansing, North Carolina by the way might be a misnomer. Perhaps microtown USA?  We love isolation!

Now after seven years of progress, our properties in Ecuador and North Carolina are in pretty good shape.   Our associates are now running things well in both places north and south.  This allows Merri and me to broaden our horizons and expand our Smalltown USA efforts to places like Lake Placid.

We can enjoy helping our readers in Ecuador, but also help those who cannot or do not want to come to Ecuador now.  We can help them in Smalltown USA North Carolina and Florida.

The benefit for you is that we can now serve you during the winter in Florida. Our North Carolina summer and autumnal seminars are great… but when we began conducting seminars in North Carolina, we tried one winter seminar.  The seminar hall and accommodations which we built to look like barns are fantastic in the summer, but in the winter they looked…

ecuador-savings

like this instead.

ecuador-savings

Water froze.  Cars stuck. Delegates were distinctly chilled.  Talk about a learning curve!

Now we have purchased an orange grove on…

ecuador-savings ]

a lake in…

ecuador-savings

Smalltown USA, Central Florida.   This is a nice lake and a pretty good grove as well… I think. My orange grove experience equals my hotel management experience when we bought Meson de las Flores, our Cotacachi hotel… in other words-zero.

Yet we keep matching our hunches with our logic and the results this next seven years will be interesting to see.  This is how we like business… as an adventure. The fun comes from not knowing, learning, growing and meeting the challenge!

We conducted international investing and business seminars in Florida Smalltown USA for years when we lived in Naples, Florida… until Naples was no longer a small town.  We fled and headed south to Cotacachi and north to the Blue Ridge.

We are back! We have chosen Mt. Dora as our small town this time… another little piece of paradise that most have missed.  I am stunned when talking with Floridians to find how many have never been there… and often do not even know where it is.

For the record, here is a map…. showing the 50 miles or so to Disney World and Orlando.

ecuador-benefits

This is a charming town that sits on a huge lake over 7000 acres.

Here is a shot from the website of the Lakeside Inn in Mt. Dora.

ecuador-benefits
The inn’s website says:

A ‘National Historic Treasure’, listed on the National Historic Register, we have continuously operated as an Inn for more than 125 years, the oldest operating Inn in Central Florida.
We are located 40 miles Northwest of Orlando in the charming shopping village of Mount Dora, the “New England” of Central Florida.

Mount Dora is the Antique Capital of Florida, where the Renninger’s Twin Markets draw thousands to their Antique Mall and Flea Market, along with downtown Art Shows, Craft Fairs, Music Festivals, Theatre, Antique Shows, Classic Wooden Boat Shows, Sailing Regatta’s and Holiday Lighting Ceremonies and Parades.  The Captain Doolittle Eco Tours and Mount Dora Trolley leave right from the Inn for your daily excursions!

Here are shots of the Inn from its website.

ecuador-benefits

That 50 miles between Orlando and Mt. Dora makes a world of difference.  This entire mid Florida area offers some incredible bargains. Take for example this listing Merri just received… a three bedroom, two bathroom house on a lake with a guest house. We track these listing and this started in the $400,000s. Now the asking price has dropped to $199,000.

ecuador savings

Our seminars in Mt. Dora WILL NOT  be about Florida real estate… but about International Investing and Business and Super Thinking. However when you visit us in Florida… if you like investing in real estate, I suggest that you take a look and we will be happy to put you in touch with brokers we have found helpful.

There you have… expanded horizons. In 2010 we serve you in Ecuador… Florida and the Blue Ridge. We look forward to meeting you in Mt. Dora.

Ecuador Amazon Problem

Many readers sent me an article from Agora Financial entitled “The Chevron Witch Trial: The Changing Face of Resource Nationalism” about the Ecuador Amazon problem and the ensuing Chevron lawsuit.

See why these Ecuador export tour delegates are creating earning potential and doing some environmental good.

ecuador-flower-exports

Many readers sent me notes similar to this: Gary, I wondered if you’d seen this and were familiar with the case, given your knowledge of and interest in Ecuador?  It sounds pretty scary and doesn’t reflect well on Ecuadorian justice and its authorities, if it’s true. You might want to comment in one of your messages as I assume other of your readers have also seen this matter reported. Regards

The recent article seemed to blame the Ecuadorian government for the problem and has some good points.

Here is a portion of that article:

Ecuador-legal-system

As mentioned the article had some valid points.

However…

We are very familiar with this story which is very, very old news going back into the 1970s.

We have lived with the Amazonians and spent quite a lot of time with the shamans there. Here I am with a Sierra Sion healer.

In fact we built a camp to help a small community of Amazonians who wanted tourism rather than oil revenues to support them.  We lost the entire investment when the FARC invaded that area.   Learn more about our Amazon trips and the Amazon village.

So I see the plight of the Amazonians as well.

I drive a car fueled with gas. I heat my home with electricity and use electricity that may come from diesel fueled generators and buy products delivered from abroad brought to me on ships propelled by their fossil fueled oil bunkers.

So there are two sides to this story.   Quite correctly the emails I have received are, half from this type of article and half from the environmentalists and humanitarians who say Chevron has cheated the poor natives of the Amazon.

See information on the other side from Amnesty International entitled Chevron (CVX) in the Amazon  Oil Rights or Human Rights? Texaco’s legacy, Chevron’s responsibility

Newsweek wrote a good article about this Amazon lawsuit over a year ago that has a balanced view.

If you Google the phrase “amazon chevron lawsuit” you’ll see dozens of articles about this… looking at both sides of the picture.

Plus there are many who argue that this has nothing to do with Chevron or Ecuador but the US legal system that encourages attorneys to file lawsuits like this.

One article “The Chevron Ecuador Lawsuit: It’s all about the Indigenous Peoples of the Amazon Basin says:  Sure it is. The 48 so-called plaintiffs or the 30,000 indigenous people we hear so much about in the media aren’t the financial beneficiaries in the law suit. The money goes to the Amazon Defense Coalition (ADC) and the law firm of Kohn, Swift & Graft.

So who is the culprit… the oil companies?  The Ecuador government?  The lawyers or we the people who use fossil fuels?

Our hearts personally go out to the poor people of the Amazon who are slowly being destroyed by civilization.

Yet we see the business view and we do like a warm home and to travel by car.

Plus if it were not for resource exploration and extraction many, many more people would be poor.

Yes, business does exploit.

There is a similar tales of bad exploitation in the part of Ecuador where we live, not with Chevron but with Ascendant Copper Company.

And another with Mitsubishi Mining.

This is because we the consumer buy their product.

Now another dilemma has bubbled up… with pharmaceuticals.

An October 17 Associated press article “Ecuador’s Correa plans to bypass drug patents” says:  President Rafael Correa says he is preparing to override a host of drug patents to provide lower-priced generic medications in Ecuador.  Correa says Ecuador will seek “compulsory licenses” from companies to produce medications considered indispensable.  Under World Trade Organization rules, countries can issue “compulsory licenses” to disregard patent rights, but only after negotiating with the patent owners and paying adequate compensation. Governments can skip the negotiating by declaring a public health emergency.  Correa says access to medicine is a human right and his decision is motivated by “the philosophy of 21st century socialism.”

When I recently noticed this I was really pretty happy to see this.

Merri and  do not use pharmaceuticals ourselves but recognize the importance they play in many people’s lives.  I consider a lot pf pharmaceutical marketing one of the biggest con games in this generation… makes Madoff pale in comparison.

It is hard for me to have sympathy for this industry as I believe that many pharmaceuticals are bilking the US public.

Already many of our readers come to Ecuador to get their prescriptions at a quarter the US cost.  This hopefully will allow this to continue or do even more.

However…

Where does it end?  If patent law loses its validity what incentive will anyone have to risk investing in new inventions and ideas?

So what can we… the little guy do?

There is not much we can do…  but if we all take some small steps, these rivulets become streams that can turn into torrents that do create change.

In Merri’s and my case, we created a small foundation Land of the Sun (LOTS) to help the environment and the poor of Ecuador.   The foundation rejuvenated the hotel Meson de las Flores which now provides a nice number of jobs at above average wages.  Our 2009 project was helping the Village of Topo above Cotacachi with its infrastructure, school and water system.  Also, LOTS sends a dozen children to school and university in our area…including the first university student from Topo.  In the past, we brought water to indigenous villages and an 80,000 gallon reservoir, schools, reforested 250,000 trees and etc….all off the Avenue of the Volcanoes.

LOTS promotes Ecuador flowers… those grown in green plantations certified by Veriflora.

We promote the ideas of having an internet business that sells exports from Ecuador to help stimulate the Ecuador economy… and to help North Americans who find they need new avenues of income.

Here are delegates at our most recent Ecuador export tour…

In another way we were early advocates of green investing in the mid 2000s through our Spottingtrends.com site and mutilicurrencyinvesting.com where we launched our Green Portfolio Study in 2006.

This is one reason why we focus on green investing and business ideas.
See http://www.garyascott.com/2008/04/01/2064.html

Here perhaps is the most important message.  Self interest is nature’s way of making sure every sentient being remains alive.  Only we human’s  have an imagination to understand the risks of ungoverned expansion.   All other life forms, given the chance will grow themselves out of existence.

Due to the conflict of our vision and this natural self serving impulse, we know that consumers will tend buy what seems most comfortable to them in the short term.

We know that big business will often take advantage of this fact and exploit, without conscious, resources to serve this impulse.

This conflict creates huge problems.  Huge problems create great opportunity… so look for small ways you can serve yourself now and help the future.

Let the big guys fiddle around with their battles while we each do the best we can… trying to make positive environmental and humanitarian statements and changes through the way we live enjoying earning, investing and living in the sun each day.

Micro Web Business Clue

Here is a micro web business clue… have a really tight niche in your internet business.

Internet-export-idea

Many readers learn how to have an Ecuador export and internet business. Here are delegates at our October 2009 Ecuador export course visiting the Hilana factory which makes a variety of textile products from Llama wool and cotton.

This is also why we are sharing a free course on how to create your own website without a webmaster written by Michelle Toole. Here is the 39th lesson in this FREE course.

The Power of a Super-Tight Niche
By Michelle Toole

When building a web business, ‘niches’ are where it’s at. You ask what’s a niche? Well a niche is web site idea or concept that addresses a particular target audience and the key is to find that sweet spot where you have high demand and low supply or competition.  Match that with your passion and the perfect set of web business building tools and that equals success.

But the question is what if your target audience is really small, low supply, low demand, should you still consider building a web business around a small or ‘super tight niche?’

Logically one would say no, a high demand, low supply niche drives large amounts of targeted readers/buyers to your site which means money in your pocket.  So why would someone deviate from a successful e-commerce formula?  Good Question and the simple answer is that at times a ‘super tight niche’ can be just right especially if it’s your passion!

Freeing yourself from the typical niche formula, low supply and high demand can open up some very tiny niches that one would otherwise overlook. If time is limited, passion is high, and the monetization model fits well, there are indeed times when a ‘super-tight niche’ can make perfect sense financially.

Let’s say that your web site niche concept has a demand of less than 1,000 which means less than a 1,000 people search for that term each month which is pretty small.  And there are around 250,000 pages containing that niche keyword, which is limited competition.  Should you say “Yeah” or “Nay” to that site concept?  Well it’s a challenging question and the key is in your monetization model.  If you are fairly confident that your planned monetization model(s) can support a narrow niche, meaning minimal traffic and you have a high return on investment per sale then ‘Go for it!’

Advantages to a Super Tight Niche

So what’s the first advantage of a super-tight niche?  A fast rise to fame.  With your focused content, optimized pages, and quality in-pointing links you win the keyword battles at the engines quite quickly.

With less competition it will be easier to find you in the search engines meaning you can rank higher sooner. And that means the faster your web site appears on the first page of Google.  Keep in mind, though, that while you will get traffic faster, you will max out your market that much faster as well. Your monetization plan must be rock solid and a natural fit.

You don’t need a lot of traffic if your monetization method includes a ‘very high return on investment’ (ROI). If your business is mortgages on Hollywood or New York City real estate, you may only need 100 customers a year to earn a very comfortable income.

The second advantage of a ‘super tight niche’ is the devoted following (i.e., your target market). If your content is excellent (which it has to be in a tight niche), your passion is real and your writing is appealing, you’ll win a loyal PREsold audience. In fact, the more passionate and knowledgeable you are, the stronger will be your audience’s attraction and attachment to your site which if you have a solid monetization model leads to that all important sale.

And finally and most importantly is that with a super tight niche your traffic tends to convert more easily into click-throughs and sales. This is because the visitors who are seeking information using your super tight niche keywords know exactly what they are looking for and generally it is something very specific. And that ‘specific need’ will be the basis of your monetization model.  Your visitors will be ‘highly targeted traffic’,  just the kind you want!

Bottom Line… A decently written “tight site” is a shoe-in to score well and generate super-focused traffic. Even though you’ll hit your max more quickly than wider niches do, what you “gain” overall more than compensates; a solid business that brings you both income and pleasure as you interact with people who share the same passion.

Internet Business & Freedom

An internet business can set us free.

Technology and a global economy allows us to enjoy our business where the sun shines for us.

Broadband has really allowed me to be free with my internet business.

ecuador-internet-business

I do have a very nice office… with a wonderful desk given to me by a friend when he moved from NC to Ecuador!  Honestly I rarely use it.

I like to move around while I work and technology means… I can!

At one stage Merri and I lived in a really remote part of Ecuador… 45 minutes off the highway down this road.

ecuador-internet-business

Our hacienda was at the tip of this bluff.

ecuador-internet-business

This was my front room view.

ecuador-internet-business

We lived with a Taita Yatchak and his apprentices and had no electricity  and no cell phone coverage. I charged my laptop from our old Land Rover. Once a week we drove into town, downloaded messages, sent and picked up email.

Seem strange?  Technology allows our internet businesses to give us even more freedom than this as is explained in a recent USA Today article entitled “Your office: At home, in a tent, or something more formal” by Laura Petrecca.

The article first tells about Katy Leakey who operates jewelry business from a tent in Kenya.  She uses VOIP phone calls, e-mail and Skype to run a global business.  She lives with the Maasai in the Kenyan bush yet sells her jewelry online and in U.S. retail stores.  She turns her passion into profit and also helps the world since she reinvests a portion of her business income in local projects, roads or schools to help the people of Africa.

internet-business

At times a table in the sunny courtyard of our hotel Meson de las Flores is my office.

The USA Today article reviews other mobile internet businesses. Here is an excerpt:  Kathy Levinson’s office environment is vastly different (from Katy Leaky).  The real estate agent works in a 10-foot-by-12-foot refurbished storage closet in the basement of her Port Washington, N.Y., home. She made the windowless office cozy by adding carpet, fresh paint and soft lighting. Leakey and Levinson are part of a surging group: business owners who work from home or in remote or mobile offices. Nearly 9% of all North American adults operate a business out of a home, according to Forrester Research. And the number of people who work remotely will continue to increase worldwide, according to research firm IDC.

Many factors will contribute to the continued growth of remote working. They include technological advances, the desire for more life/work balance and the desire of retiring Baby Boomers and older adults to keep working for personal and financial reasons.

“Folks in their 60s, 70s and 80s have 35 or more years (of life) to enjoy and pay for, but not everyone wants to be a greeter at Walmart,” says Joanne Pratt, a futurist and researcher who has studied the effect that technology has on home-based businesses. She expects many in these age groups to operate businesses from home. “That gives them the luxury of enjoying so-called retirement while keeping a hand in and earning income.”

Laptops, broadband make it possible!

Levinson and Leakey have disparate careers, work styles and offices. Yet they credit the same necessity with enabling them to run businesses on their own terms: technology.

Souped-up laptops, speedy broadband Internet connections and low-priced global phone plans have helped empower millions of people to ditch traditional office settings and run businesses from their homes, cars, vans or even a tent.

Small-business owners now have access to “more powerful tools that used to be available only to large enterprises,” says IDC mobile enterprise research analyst Sean Ryan.

Lower costs, no commute.

There are many lifestyle benefits to running a home-based business: no commute, working in sweatpants and the array of readily available food in the kitchen refrigerator.

There are also some financial benefits. Home-based businesses take in less revenue than businesses that lease space, but they keep more money because there is no rent or other expenses that go with leasing, according to Pratt’s research for the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Office of Advocacy.

I love our bubbling creek so sometimes stroll to our deep woods office on Little Horse Creek and work there.

7 Fundamental Laws of Your Own Internet Business

Knowing this ancient wisdom gives seven steps to calling on a vast pool of inner intelligence that we can combine with the wonders of modern technology. This combination leads us easily and stresslessly to a healthier and more enjoyable way of creating income and wealth.

#1: All Investments are Controlled by just a Few Natural Laws

Step to take: Look for fundamental economic laws which serve society rather than just for hot investments.

“The ideals which have lighted my way to face life cheerfully have been Kindness, Beauty and Truth. The trite subjects of human effort-outward possessions, outward success, luxury have always seem to me contemptible.” Albert Einstein

#2: All Natural Laws of Economics are Dynamic

Step to take: Look beneath the balance sheet.

“What have you in your houses? And what is it you guard behind fastened doors? Have you peace, the quiet urge that reveals your power? Have you remembrance, the glimmering arches that span the summits of your mind? Have you beauty, that leads the heart from things fashioned of wood and stone to the holy mountain?  Tell me are these things in your houses? Or have you only comfort, and the lust for comfort, that stealthy thing that enters the house as a guest, and then becomes the host and then a master?  Ay and it becomes a tamer and with hook and scourge makes puppets of your larger desires. Though its hands are silken, its heart is of iron. It lulls you to sleep only to stand by your bed and jeer at the dignity of the flesh. Verily the lust for comfort murders the passion of the soul and then walks grinning in the funeral.” Kahil Gibran

In Western society, we are fooled by triple illusions of material wealth. These illusions are net worth, balance sheets and money. These are measures that never show true wealth and can change quickly.

Such undependable measures of wealth lead to never-ending restlessness. They are like looking at a picture of a picture of a picture and treating this picture as if it were real.

We look at how all business are ideas and how dynamic nature is so too must our business be.

#3: All Wealth is Within

Step to take: Listen to your inner intelligence.

“The course of human history is determined not by what happens in the skies but by what takes place in our hearts.” Sir Arthur Keith

#4: All Economic Laws are Ruled by Cause and Effect

Step to take: Learn to give.

“It is truly one of the most beautiful compensations of life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

#5: The World’s Economy has Infinite Abundance

Step to take: See the infinite possibilities.

“Water is everywhere around you but you see only barriers that keep you from the water.” Rumi
#6: All Economic Laws are Simply Energy and Desire

Step to take: Give attention to intention.

“Put your heart, mind, intellect and soul even to your smallest acts. This is the secret of success.” Swami Sivanada

#7: The Only Certainty is Change

Step to take: Embrace change.

“Do everything with a mind that lets go.” Achaan Chah.

When in Cotacachi, I work from our studio and watch the sunrise over this view.

ecuador-internet-business

When on Ecuador’s coast I work on the balcony of our beach front apartment and watch the sunset.

We live in miraculous times.  The current economic downturn moves us along… to where we really want to be.  Ancient wisdom and modern technology take us from there.
