New Ecuador Golf Course

A new golf course is coming to Ecuador’s coast, near Jama.

Mike Grabowski, head of Yuma Internacional, developers of the Ladera Pacifica gated community recently told me about the new world class golf course opening up soon in Jama, about 30 minutes from the Ladera Pacific community.

Golf facilities in Ecuador are very limited.

Guayaquil Ecuador Golf Course.

Ecuador is not a great golfing destination as there are only a handful of private clubs near Quito, Guayaquil, or Cuenca, with 18-hole courses.  The closest golf course to the Pacific has been quite a distance away in Guayaquil.

An article in Cybergolf  entitled “The Six-Continent Club – With New Course in Ecuador, Smyers Joins One of Golf’s Most Select Groups” (1)

The article says:   He only has Antarctica is left. With a new course opening in Ecuador this fall, golf architect Steve Smyers will have designed on six of Planet Earth’s seven continents, joining only a handful of architects to do so.

“It’s called Costa Jama, and it has four different ecosystems,” explains Smyers energetically, as his eyes light up and he beams a toothy smile and, indeed, he has good reason to be delighted with this site. “It’s right on the Equator, where the mountains meet the Pacific Ocean, with three finishing three holes right on the water or playing directly towards it. It also traverses a jungle, a ravine, a riverside, and winds into the foothills of the mountains. We even play along the side of a river!  It’s an absolutely spectacular natural setting for golf.”

This is one more reason why the area north of Bahia on Ecuador’s Pacific will continue to expand.  See a link to the golf course details below.

Ladera Pacifica is a gated community north of Bahia with a breathtaking panoramic view of the ocean, within walking distance from the beach.

It is situated in coastal Manabi, Ecuador, just a short distance from Bahia de Caraquez, overlooking the fishing and surf town of Canoa.

The project is safely elevated at an average elevation of 60 feet above sea level, in an environmentally protected reserve, surrounded by rare, tropical, pristine forest. Ladera Pacifica project consists of 40 luxury homes, at 1,200 square feet designed to rigorous standards, with quality and sustainability never before seen in Ecuador.

Ladera Pacifc has the best ocean views.

Ocean view homes provide the best of both worlds, access to the sea, but lower operation and maintenance costs away from the  salty corrosive ocean mists.

Ladera Pacific’s position above the beach removes the risks of the rare natural disasters and floods due to high tides, change in weather patterns and the El Nino effect.  Security on a hillside development is also logistically easier, so no huge obtrusive walls are necessary.

Ecuador is not a great golfing destination as there are only a handful of private clubs near Quito, Guayaquil, or Cuenca, with 18-hole courses.

These limited opportunities for playing golf in Ecuador however do include some excellent golf courses.  This house is near one of the best, The Los Chillos Golf Club.

Los Chillos Golf Club is outside Quito and is one of the more exclusive clubs.

Club Los Chillos was founded in 1979 and offers a par 72 with a course rating of 34.5.  The club is about 20 miles from Quito with 11 lakes, a driving range and mountain and forest scenery.  The golf course is almost 8,000 feet above sea level and  has good weather and spectacular views.  This golf club has clay tennis courts, racket facilities, squash courts, soccer fields, volley ball facilities, swimming pools and horse riding.  There is also a  sauna, hairdressing salon, cafeteria, bar and Turkish bath.  People with babies are welcome.

2017 Schedule

Enjoy Time in the Good New Days

Many people yearn for a return to the good old days.  This is a mistake.  Those days are gone and will never return.  Honestly they really were not that good.  We would be sorry if they were here now.  The future is better and for a special few the days, months and years ahead will be much better than the past.   We plan to be among them and invite you to join us in an easier, freer, richer, safer world.

Soon you will be reading… again, about how instability in the US dollar threatens our lifestyles.  The dollar, once the world’s reserve currency is burdened with debt and deficits that threaten economic and social order almost everywhere.  This is nothing new.  In fact, deterioration in the greenback is one reason for a seven decade downward spiral in your and my freedom.  When we work hard and save carefully, but get less and less in return, we become boxed in.  It’s a never ending rat race.  This is a trap, a downwards spiral where the more dollars we get the less we can buy.

Learn how to have more freedom and time, less stress, better health care, extra income, greater safety and profit in your savings despite America’s deficits, debt and currency risk.

downwards spiral

A downward spiral of the US dollar began the downward spiral of our freedom.

Fortunately there are secrets that will allow a few to live much better, free of debt and worry despite the decline in the dollar’s purchasing power.   My wife Merri and I have traveled, lived, worked and invested around the world for nearly 50 years to gain this information.  Let me share the basics of this data and how it can help you.

The first fact behind this secret is that things are really good in the western world.  Despite the many problems, we are surrounded by more abundance and greater opportunity than almost anyone has ever enjoyed, anywhere, ever.   To enjoy a fair share of this wealth, all we have to do is understand human nature and learn how to invest in the new economy, as it changes and becomes new, again and again.  Merri and I have made seven huge transitions in the 50 years.  Each has allowed us to always stay ahead of losses that the majority of Americans suffer.  We are in another transition right now and want to share why and what to do so you can stay ahead and live a richer, independent life too.

The concept of democracy, as we learned it, has weakened, but we still have free will and do not have to let poor government, wars, economic and social injustice blur our well-being.  We can still be free and responsible for our health, our income and our wealth.  The majority of people blame on government and big business for economic failure.  They want them to fix the problems, step back from the change and rebuild from what they perceive as ruin.

The few who succeed see change as a gift instead.   No change is a guarantee that nothing gets better.  Evolution brings destructive innovation but such change is not ruin. It is opportunity.

The change in the purchasing power of the US dollar is one of the greatest risks we have to our independence, safety, health, and wealth, but is also a chance for huge profit as I explain below.   Though the greenback has been strong for a number of years, its strength is in serious jeopardy.  The growing federal deficits increase the national debt and this with rising interest rates propels a growing debt service.

When the Dow Jones Industrial Average recently passed 20,000, another milestone of “20” took place that has a much darker meaning to your and my spending power.  The U.S. national debt passed the $20 trillion mark.

The problem is that the Dow will come back down.  National debt will not fall.

In the past decade US debt nearly doubled and the Congressional Budget Office estimates that the rate of  debt will continue to rise for at least ten more years.  That debt is all the debt issued by the US  Department of the Treasury since 1790.  In other words in the ten years from 2006 to 2016 the US government added as much debt as it had accumulated in the previous 216 years!

That number does not include state and local debt.  That number doesn’t include so-called “agency debt ( debt issued by federal agencies and government-sponsored enterprises) which is “guesstimated” to be another $8.6 trillion or so.  That  dreadful number does not include the so-called unfunded liabilities of entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare.

Do you feel burdened by personal debt?  Well, add the Federal National Debt because per person it is over $60,000.  If one adds in all the other debt each and every American owes over $100,000!   For each family of four, our friendly Congress has added an extra $400,000 debt.

How can America pay this back?

The answer is they cannot.  However there is good news.  Payback actually does not matter.  No one expects the US or any country to ever pay back all its debt.  Isn’t that nice? We all owe $100,000 but don’t have to pay it back?  Right?

Here is the bad news.  Everyone does expect every country to pay its national debt service.   This is why we know there will be a downward dollar spiral.  You see when debt service gets too high, governments always let the purchasing power of the currency fall.  It’s a dirty trick.  Someone owes you a bunch of dollars every month and they pay it.  The problem is those dollars buy less clothing, less food, less housing and energy and less everything.

Wait a minute isn’t that good for us?  If we each owe a $100,000 but get to pay it back in devalued dollars, don’t we reduce our debt?   Yes, but those are the same dollars we are paid with.  Those are the same dollars that pay for our food, our clothing and our shelter. Those are the same dollars in our savings account so the reduced purchasing power lowers our standards of living too!

Go to the store.  Buy some bread or, heaven forbid, some fresh vegetables like peppers or fruit.   Look at the cost of your prescription or hospital bills.   Do something simple like have your car serviced at an auto dealer.  Look at the dollars you spend and you’ll see what I mean.

A huge dollar conundrum looms from the rising national debt service as well.  During most of the last decade when the national debt was skyrocketing, interest rates were plunging and remained really low.  Now rates are starting to rise as will the US national debt service.  This chart from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) shows that debt service is expected to more than triple in the next ten years.

dollar charts

Largely due to the Federal Reserve’s aggressive efforts to keep interest rates low, the U.S. government is paying historically low rates on its debt.

The CBO projects, unless the law changes, US national interest costs will more than double over the next 10 years, rising from $270 billion in 2017 to $712 billion in 2026 and totaling $4.8 trillion over the period.  Interest costs are expected to continue climbing beyond the next 10 years and are projected to be the third largest category in the federal budget by 2028 (after just Social Security and Medicare), the second largest category in 2046, and the single largest category in 2050.

These interest costs add up to trillions of dollars that won’t be spent on roads, on the military, on health care or the environment or schools.  That rising debt service creates a vicious cycle that can only lead to a devaluation of the US dollar so the debt can be paid, but in phony terms.

The loss of the dollar’s purchasing power erodes our independence, our freedom and our savings and wealth as well.

At the same time, low interest rates by big banks and higher health care costs soak up the ever diminishing income and savings we have left.  According to a Gallup poll, the most unpopular three institutions in America are big corporations & Wall Street banks, HMOs and Congress.  Yet there is little we can do because these institutions are in control.

Over the last 50 years the average income for 90 percent of the American population fell.  Our health system is restricted by a Kafka-esque maze of legislation and insurance regulations that delay, frustrate, and thwart attempts by patients and doctors from proper medical care.  Big banks and corporations restrict our freedom of choice.  The business customer relationships are no longer transactions between free equals.

Banks can trap us in indebtedness at every age from student loans to mortgages to health care costs.  They pay almost nothing on our savings.  They hide unexpected fees and payments in complex and unreadable documents.  Banks and big corporations routinely conceal vital information in small print and then cheat.  Weak regulations and lax enforcement leave consumers with few ways to fight back.  Many of these businesses ranging from cable TV to phone and internet service to health insurance have virtual monopolies that along with deceptive marketing destroys any form of free market.

These same companies control the credit-scoring agencies so if  we don’t pay unfair fees, our credit scores will plunge and we could lose the ability to borrow money, rent an apartment, even to get a job.  Many consumers are forced to accept “arbitration clauses” in lieu of  legal rights.  The alternative is to lose banking, power, and communication services.

Big business has also usurped our privacy.  Internet companies sell our personal data.  Personal information is pulled from WiFi and iPhones track and store our movements.  The government can access this information, sometimes without subpoenas.  There’s a lot that we don’t know, often withheld under the guise of “National Security.”

The glow on Western democratic capitalism has dimmed… or so it seems.  The US, leading the way, is still a superpower with economic, innovation and military might, but the institutions that should serve the people have become flawed or broken.

America’s infrastructure is in shambles.  The nation’s bridges are crumbling, many water systems are filled with toxins, yet instead of spending more to fix this, we build more prisons.  The 2.2 million people currently in  jail is a 500 percent increase over the past thirty years.  60% of the inmates belong to ethnic groups.  Not just non-white ethnic groups are suffering.  Annual death rates are falling for every group except for middle-aged white Americans.  Death rates are rising among this group driven by an epidemic of suicides and afflictions stemming from substance abuse, alcoholic liver disease and overdoses of heroin and prescription opioids.

America’s middle class is shrinking.  Nearly  half of America’s income goes to upper-income households now.  In 1970 only 29 percent went to this group.  How can we regain our freedom, our happiness and our well being in such a world?  What can we do?

The answer to a better, freer life is to combine better health, higher income and greater savings for a happier, more resilient lifestyle.

Merri and I are in our 49th year of living, working, investing and researching to find and share ideas on how to have simpler, low stress, healthier, more affluent lifestyles.  Our courses, reports and email messages look at ways to gain:

#1:  Low cost natural health.

#2:  Global micro business income.

#3:  Safer, more profitable, easy to make value investments.

Many readers use our services for just one of these three benefits.  They focus only on health or on earning more or on investing better.

27 years ago Merri and I created the International Club as a way for readers to join us and be immersed in all three of these benefits.   The International Club is a year long learning program aimed at helping members earn worry free income, have better affordable good health and gain extra safety and profits with value investments.

The three disciplines, health, earning and investing, work best when coordinated together.  Regretfully the attacks on our freedom are realities of life.  There is little we can do to change this big picture.  However we can change how we care for our health, how we earn and how we save so that we are among the few who live better despite the dollar’s fall.

We start with better lower cost health care.

Club membership begins by sharing ways to be free of the “Secret Hospital Charge Master”.   Just as governments hide truth behind “National Security”, big health care businesses hide medical truths behind “Charge masters”.  Most hospital charge masters are secret because big business does not want us to know how much hospital costs have risen.  Motivations beyond our good health, like corporate greed, want to keep us in the dark about health care cost.

Despite rising health care costs, a report from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention shows that hospitals are the last place we want to be for good health.  One report shows that hospital-acquired infections alone kills 57% more Americans every year than all car accidents and falls put together.

Often, what patients catch in the hospital can be worse than what sent them there.  Governments and health care agencies agree  – antibiotic resistance is a “nightmare.”  An antibiotic-resistant bacteria may be spreading in more hospitals than patients know.  About one in every 25 hospitalized patients gets an infection and a 2013 report from the Journal of Patient Safety showed that medical errors are the third-leading cause of death in the country.

Along with the risk of hospital acquired illness and medical errors, the second huge threat to our well being… is health care costs, especially at hospitals.  This is why charge masters are so often secret.  There are few risks to our wealth that are greater than a hospital stay.

I have created three shamanic health reports are about:

#1: Nutrition

#2: Purification

#3: Exercise

Each report is available for $19.95.  However club members receive these three reports worth $59.85 free.

Club members also receive seven workshops and courses on how earn everywhere with at home micro businesses.  We call this our “Live Well and Free Anywhere Program”.   The program contains a series of courses and reports that show ways to earn and be free. These courses and reports are:

  • “International Business Made EZ”
  • “Self Fulfilled – How to Write to Sell”
  • Video Workshop by our webmaster David Cross,
  • The entire weekend “Writer’s Camp” in MP3
  • The report “How to Raise Money Abroad”
  • Report and MP3 Workshop “How to Gain Added Success With Relaxed Concentration”
  • The course “Event-Full – How to Earn Conducting Seminars and Tours”

This program is offered at $299, but is available to club members free. They save $299 more.

Next, club members participate in an intensive program called the Purposeful investing Course (Pi).  The purpose of Pi is finding value investments that increase safety and profit.  Learn Slow, Worry Free, Good Value Investing.

Stress, worry and fear are three of an investor’s worst enemies.  These destroyers of wealth can create a Behavior Gap, that causes investors to underperform in any market good or bad.  The behavior gap is created by natural human responses to fear.  Pi helps create profitable strategies that avoid losses from this gap.

Lessons from Pi are based on the creation and management of a Primary Pi Model Portfolio, called the Pifolio.  There are no secrets about this portfolio except that it ignores the stories from economic news (often created by someone with vested interests) and is based mainly on good math that reveals the truth through financial news.

The Pifolio is a theoretical portfolio of MSCI Country Benchmark Index ETFs that cover all the good value markets using my 50 years of global experience and my study of the analysis of four mathematical investing geniuses (and friends).

There are seven layers of tactics in the Pi strategy.

Pi Tactic #1: Determine purpose and good value.

Pi Tactic #2: Diversify 70% to 80% of portfolio equally in good value developed markets.

Pi Tactic #3: Invest 20% to 30% equally in good value emerging markets.

Pi Tactic  #4:  Use trending algorithms to buy sell or hold these markets.

Pi Tactic  #5:  Add spice speculating with ideal conditions.

Pi Tactic  #6: Add spice speculating with leverage.

Pi Tactic  #7:  Add spice speculating with forex potential.

The Pifolio analysis begins with a continual research of international major stock markets that compares their value based on:

#1:  Current book to price

#2:  Cash flow to price

#3:  Earnings to price

#4:  Average dividend yield

#5:  Return on equity

#6:  Cash flow return

#7:  Market history

We combine the research of several brilliant mathematicians and money managers with my years of investing experience.

This is a complete and continual study of what to do about the movement of international major and emerging stock markets.  I want to share this study throughout the next year with you.

This analysis forms the basis of a Good Value Stock Market Strategy.  The analysis is rational, mathematical and does not worry about short term ups and downs.  This strategy is easy for anyone to follow and use.  Pi reveals the best value markets and provides contacts to managers and analysts and Country Index ETFs so almost anyone can create and follow their own strategy.

The costs are low and this type of ETF is one of the hardest for institutions to cheat.  Expense ratios for most ETFs are lower than those of the average mutual fund.  Little knowledge, time, management or guesswork are required.  The investment is simply a diversified portfolio of good value indices.  Investments in an index are like investments in all the shares of a good value market.

Pi opens insights to numerous long term cycles that most investors miss because they have not been investing long enough to see them.

The Pi subscription is normally $299 per annum but club member receive Pi at no charge and save an additional $299.

Profit from the US dollar’s fall.

In the 1980s, a remarkable set of two economic circumstances helped anyone who spotted them become remarkably rich.  Some of my readers made enough to retire.  Others picked up 50% currency gains.  Then the cycle ended.  Warren Buffett explained the importance of this ending in a 1999 Fortune magazine interview.  He said:  Let me summarize what I’ve been saying about the stock market: I think it’s very hard to come up with a persuasive case that equities will over the next 17 years perform anything like—anything like—they’ve performed in the past 17!

Club members receive a report about opportunity in the  current strength of the US dollar is a second remarkable similarity to 30 years ago.   The dollar rose along with Wall Street.  Profits came quickly over three years.  Then the dollar dropped like a stone, by 51%  in just two years.  A repeat of this pattern is growing and could create up to 50% extra profit if we start using strong dollars to accumulate good value stock market ETFs in other currencies.

This is the most exciting opportunity I have seen since we started sending our reports on international investing ideas more than three decades ago.  The trends are so clear that I created a short, but powerful report “Three Currency Patterns for 50% Profits or More.”   This report shows how to earn an extra 50% from currency shifts with even small investments.  I kept the report short and simple, but included links to 153 pages of  Good Value Stock Market research and Asset Allocation Analysis.

The report shows 20 good value investments and a really powerful tactic that shows the most effective and least expensive way to accumulate these bargains in large or even very small amounts (less than $5,000).  There is extra profit potential of at least 50% so the report is worth a lot.

This report sells for $29.95 but when you become a club member you receive the report, “Three Currency Patterns For 50% Profits or More” FREE.

Plus get the $39.99 report, “The Silver Dip 2017” free.

With investors watching global stock markets bounce up and down, many missed two really important profit generating events.  The price of silver dipped below $14 an ounce as did shares of the iShares Silver ETF (SLV).   The second event is that the silver gold ratio hit 80 and has remained near this level, compared to a range of the 230s only two years ago.

These two events are a strong sign to invest in precious metals.

I prepared a special report “Silver Dip 2015” and updated this in 2017.   The report explains the exact conditions you need to make leveraged silver & gold speculations that can increase the returns in a safe portfolio by as much as eight times.  The purpose of the report is to share long term lessons about speculating in precious metals gained through 30 years of speculating and investing in gold and silver.

The low price of silver offers special value now so I want to send you this report because the “Silver Dip 2017” offers enormous profit potential in 2017.

The report “Silver Dip 2017” sells for $39.95 but club members receive it free as well.

The $39.95 new “Live Anywhere – Earn Everywhere Report” is also free.

There is an incredible new economy that’s opening for those who know what to do.  There are great new opportunities and many of them offer enormous income potential but also work well in disaster scenarios.

There are are specific places where you can reduce your living expenses and easily increase your income.  Scientific research has shown that being in such places actually make you smarter and healthier.  Top this off with the fact that they provide tax benefits as well and you have to ask, “Where are these places?”.

Learn about these specific places.  More important learn what makes them special.  Discover seven freedom producing steps that you can use to find other similar places of opportunity.

The report includes a tax and career plan broken into four age groups, before you finish school, from age 25 to 50 – age 50-to 65 and what to do when you reach the age where tradition wants you to re-tire.  (Another clue-you do not need to retire and probably should not!)

The report is very specific because it describes what Merri and I, our children and even my sister and thousands of our readers have done and are doing, right now.

Live Anywhere – Earn Everywhere focuses on a system that takes advantage of living in Smalltown USA, but earning locally and globally.

This report is available online for $39.99 but International Club members receive it free.

Save $418.78… “plus more” when you become a club member.

Here is more on this Ecuador golf course for sale.

The lake in question is Laguna Yaguarcocha, just five minutes north of the city of Ibarra and a little more than half hour drive along main highways north from Cotacachi.

Ecuador Day 3 089

There is a ridge which runs between the lake and the city of Ibarra and from a local lookout point you get the view of the lake above and also the city below.

Ecuador Day 3 087

The property is called Rancho Totoral.

Here’s a picture from just last Sunday of our Imbabura real estate group eating lunch on the newly constructed patio. By the way, Eduardo the owner, tells me the architect designed roof over the patio cost just $8,000 to put up last summer.

P1030417

Last Sunday, just as all our delegates were finishing lunch I strolled over to Eduardo and asked if he wanted to present his project. He has about 22 acres in total and had been thinking of building some townhouses with a local constructor. To my complete surprise he said, “..well actually me and Patricia (his wife) have decided to sell the whole property”.

Suddenly I found myself with unexpected news to convey to the group. As we strolled out on to the grounds, one delegate, a successful internet company owner, said “let me guess – $1.8 million” and I said close ” but the asking price is $1.6 million”.

Of course, not all of us have that kind of money but if that price sounds a little high, bare in mind that just bare land around this desirable lake is selling at $10 per square meter and Eduardo’s price is only for the land and buildings – he’s asking $18 per square meter for thousands of square meters of construction and a 9 hole functioning golf course with the business thrown in. Here’s a shot of one of the fairways below with the lake and mountains in the background.

P1030463

The altitude here is just under 7,000 feet and as such the climate is warm with only the slightest hint of an early morning chill. Here is the 44 seat restaurant below and the building it’s inside. (The patio can seat a further 100 people).

P1030525

P1030517

This area has a perfect climate around the lake and not surprisingly the lake is a weekend trip destination not just for Ibarra’s inhabitants but also folks from Quito and even further away. Here’s a couple of early morning shots of the lake as I arrived yesterday with the early morning mist just about burned off.

P1030427

Laguna Yaguarcocha is also the site for Formula 3 races around a fast circuit and previously the races were run on the road that runs clean around the lake. Paragliding is a popular early morning sport, launch yourself of a nearby hill and glide serenely over the lake just as this guy was doing yesterday morning. Snow capped Cotacachi volcano was easily visible through the trees in the distance this clear morning.

Here are some shots of the road outside Rancho Totoral and also the entrance to the property and the driveway down to the restaurant and house, one think I like about this property is the mature gardens and tremendous variety of plants and trees.

It’s pretty much a pitch and put course although I can assure you that wouldn’t be the case for me! Mind you if I owned this property I’d be out walking this property every morning just as I did with Eduardo yesterday morning.

There is a race track that wraps around Yaguarcocha Lake.

One wonderful thing about owning Ecuador real estate is that there is just about everything in this area from hot springs, to glorious mountains to great fishing to wild cloud forest preserves to golf to Formula 3 car racing.

Several delegates recently went to the races at lake Yaguarcocha. You can see some shots of the race below.

Last April, 2006 it was announced that Latin America motor sport took a big step forward by introducing the PanAm GP Series races. This is a brand new racing series that makes a significant impact on racing in Central and South America.

This series includes races in Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Columbia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Panama and the United States at Homestead in Miami. There is extensive TV coverage on the Fox network.

Although Merri and I are not fans, for those that like this type of sport there are many kinds of races from Formula 3 to motor bikes to souped up go carts here that add one more business dimension to this land.

Whether you want real estate in America, Ecuador or anywhere in the world, look for distortions. They offer value that can improve your lifestyle and increase your wealth.

Retire in Ecuador – Out of Cities

Retire in Ecuador… our wherever…out of town because isolated places may be out of the box bargains.

retire-in-ecuador-remote

Merri and I have purchased many isolated places.  Here is a shot from our North Carolina farm.

A reader, wanting to know whether to retire in Ecuador or not sent this note last week:

Dear Gary,

I have noticed that you have mentioned (a few times) that you and Merri are not residents of Ecuador —– and you do not want to become residents. Would you be kind enough to explain what brought you to this decisions? Thank you,

My reply was “Mainly grandkids”.

Yet there is much more.

Merri and I live both in Ecuador and North Carolina because we love the people, the way of life, the land and the value.

We did not choose Ecuador because it is outside the US, nor Ashe county because it is in America.

We chose them because they are both in our opinion great places to be… and they are isolated.

Change alters the value of places.

When I grew up living in the suburbs of Portland Oregon, I could walk miles to school when I was eight.  We let our doors unlocked.

When I was a young man, huge cities were great places to be.  I lived in Hong Kong, San Francisco and London as well as portland… at times walking late at night in many parts of the city alone.  Cities were fun!

Now cities are much more dangerous and crowded and inconvenient.

Traffic from my mom’s suburban Oregon house (the same one for 50 years) to downtown Portland is horrid and she has to double lock all her windows.

Great places bring opportunity and joy in our lifestyles… but great places change and now there are double benefits in Isolation

I have steadily increased my investments in three seemingly isolated places; high in the Ecuador Andes, in a remote Pacific fishing village and in Ashe County North Carolina.

I chose each for the same reasons.  They are isolated but have good internet and reasonable access to a good airport

There are several reasons why change has put a premium on isolation.

retire-in-ecuador-remote

Merri and I have purchased many isolated places.  Here is a shot from our Ecuador Hacienda.

One reason is food.  Ecuador is a small agricultural country and as such, huge national distribution systems are not required to feed the population.  The food is fresher.  Preservatives are not as required.

The residents in the Blue Ridge of Ashe county know how to feed themselves as well.  Our farm is dotted with old homesteads where the dwellers lived mostly off the land… not that long ago… so people here know how to create their own food supply if need be.

The second reason is that the cost of living is still low compared to cities in Ecuador or the US.

The third reason is health.  There are no big factories… the air is fresh… water is quite pure… and you are not surrounded by crowds… increased risk of crime and such.

Plus (fourth) lifestyle benefits are great. No traffic jams… not much traffic noise… far less stress.

Fifth, property prices are low compared to alternatives… yet for the reasons stated above… they offer potential of appreciation as more and more people want to get out of the cities and burbs.

At the beginning of this millennium I recommended investing in Ashe County, North Carolina and did so myself.

In the 10 years since, even with the real estate crash, the price of land in the area has risen five to 10 times. Yet these prices remain low compared to other similar areas.

The small towns in the area are safe, the people friendly.   Life is still good.  People still wave when you drive by.

I can now eat a hearty breakfast in Jefferson, North Carolina (our nearest town of any sort) for under five dollars.   Also when we go out to breakfast we can leave the house unlocked and cars, trucks and jeeps parked with the keys in them.

9/11 changed people’s values. Family, friends and quieter, more peaceful life is more important than before.

Having these fine qualities is harder to achieve in downtown Manhattan or Central Chicago or in the heart of L.A.

Life in America is changing due to the difficult economic and social times. There is a return to simplicity and the value of these small towns and their honest core values will grow.

If the economy suddenly recovers and the world’s economy rises, small towns will still not lose their appeal. The world’s population continues to grow.   People always want what they perceive they have lost… freedom from crowds, traffic jams, pollution and the hassle of city life.   I believe these qualities will grow in value.

Today, the portable computer, internet and cell phone have changed all the rules of real estate. The old maxim is still true that the three most important aspects that affect a properties value are location, location, location, but technology alters which locations will have greater value!

retire-in-ecuador-remote

Merri and I have purchased many isolated places.  Here is a shot of the land around the village where we have our Ecuador hotel.

Take for example, my own career in writing about international investing.

When I began, I had to live in London. This was where all the knowledge and information was held. To give timely advice I had to be there. Then as phone rates dropped and the fax came along, I was able to leave the congested city and move to Naples, Florida, then a sleepy fishing village and still have access to the data I would need. Finally as Naples became crowded, because of the Internet, we were able to move to isolated farms both here and in Ecuador and still have access to any international investment information.

I can call up market details, specific shares, global news, regardless of how remote I am.

retire-in-ecuador-remote

Merri and I have purchased many isolated places.  Here is a shot of the empty beah near our Ecuador beach condos.

Here is the key point.

The primary factor of real estate’s value used to be physical accessibility to many people. This factor is shifting to accessibility of information.

Remote places are gaining a new value if they have access to information.

Ashe county which adjoins Virginia and Tennessee was established and named after Samuel Ashe in 1799. It is often known as the Lost Province because until recently hardly anyone knew of the place.

The county seat is Jefferson and the county has a land area of 426.16 miles but only a population of 22,209 people. This population is wide spread as well. The only towns are Jefferson (1,300 population), West Jefferson (1,002) and Lansing (183).

This is a totally rural area with three commercial crops, Christmas trees, timber and tobacco.

There are several small factories in the county but tourist activities such as canoeing on the new river, scenic drives though Southern Appalachian Wilderness, leaf looking and camping.

Ashe county is isolated but sits almost equidistant from the north and south of the east coast of the United States.  We almost the same distance from Florida and  Maine.

Here are the signs I see that suggest to me that this area will boom:

1. The prices here are a fraction of the counties north and south.

2. The first cappuccino machines have arrived in Jefferson. When we arrived there was nothing like this and it was a dry county.  Now there are smart cafes… wine bars and art gallerys.

3. Prices as mentioned have already risen.

4. The major road from I-77 has being widened to four and even six lanes.

5. Wal Mart built a super store.

6. The first golf course community has been a success in Jefferson.

7. Lowes has open a large DIY store.

There are some other great benefits here. The nearest airports for commercial flights is Tri-Cities Tennessee.   This s one of the easiest airports I have ever checked into…a 15 check in allowee. Parking right at the front door and often the policemen will hel yu haul in your bags.  Yet this regional airport is just over a half hour to Atlanta or Cincinnati.

There is a great college town Boone just 45 minutes away, a chic, resort area, Blowing Rock the same distance and real cities, like Charlotte two hours drive.

Yet as isolated as we are we have great DSL broadband so I am as connected as if I lived in Manhattan.

This makes me more effective than some businesses in the center of major cities, as I avoid the delays from traffic jams, crowds, smog, missed parking places and crowds.

You can take advantage of great isolated places to be by creating an internet business and looking for places like Ashe county north Carolina that are short on people but long on data resources.

Retire in Ecuador because Ecuador real estate is inexpensive.

Merri and I have purchased a lot of Ecuador real estate in remote places as well.

See why at Ecuador Real Estate is Inexpensive

Wherever you plan to retire in Ecuador at home or elsewhere, think about leaving the maddening crowd.  Isolated places may be the bargains of the future.

Ecuador Retirement Lifestyle Shift

Retirement in Ecuador can shift lifestyle towards simplicity.

In a moment, let’s look at the current way to earn more income with greater safety for retirement, in Ecuador or anywhere, for now or for future retirement.

First, let’s look at how many North Americans are learning to make whatever income they have go farther… with simplicity.

When you retire in Ecuador one great benefit is being surrounded by a culture that understands and lives simply.

There are many simply pleasures in Ecuador like…

retire in Ecuador

Don’t get me wrong.  You can enjoy  luxuries when you live or retire in Ecuador.

This excerpt from a recent article at Ecuador Living entitled “Retire in Ecuador Guide – Communications” shows how to eliminate long distance telephone charges in Ecuador:

When you retire in Ecuador enjoy new but different luxuries. Luxury differs in every culture and country. For example in Ecuador, tile roofs, hardwood and ceramic floor tiles  (luxuries in North America) are low cost, standard building supplies.

A regular maid, to do dishes and laundry, costs little.

Yet washing machines and dishwashers are expensive luxuries in Ecuador.

Cars cost a lot in Ecuador.  Cabs and drivers with their own cars are cheap because personal cars have a high duty.   Commercial vehicles can be imported into Ecuador without tax.

People who couldn’t afford housekeepers or gardeners in North America can do so when they live or retire in Ecuador.

Take time to understand the system and compare costs before setting your lifestyle. Hold off on the big fridge. This will cost a lot.  A maid buying fresh food in the market every day creates employment and costs less!

retire in Ecuador A simple Ecuador pleasure is the good humor man on the waterfront.

Excerpts from a recent USA TODAY article  for Boomers, recession is redefining retirement  by Christine Dugas, explains more:

Life changes are becoming a focus, along with retirement-expectation changes.

“People are stepping back and asking themselves truly, ‘How much is enough?’ ” says Sheryl Garrett, a financial planner in Kansas City, Mo. It’s more of a movement to simple living than just a temporary spending cutback. “People are taking ownership of what they can control.”

Many Boomers are so busy dealing with their daily lives, from monthly bills and vacation plans, to doctor appointments and children’s college hopes, that they seldom considered their futures. And they often believe that life sort of ends with retirement.

The financial crisis has forced them to look ahead. In reality, they will live much longer and be healthier than their parents’ generation. And retirement may be filled with much more than playing golf or cards.

Retirees get married, they move, and some even have children, says James Richardson, a financial planner in Raleigh, N.C.

“In many cases, people feel more productive if they continue to work during retirement,” he says. “That was true even before the financial crisis.”

“We have to look at retirement differently,” she says. “They always say that if you are going to work in retirement, do the things that you love to do. So I’m not going to complain. I love teaching.”

Baby Boomers such as Neilson may change retirement. “They may re-create themselves so that they can do something that is productive and still earn a paycheck,” Garrett says.

People are not living on an extraordinary gravy train, he says, and they can’t use their houses as ATMs any longer. And they can’t count on buying a new refrigerator just because they want one, as opposed to when they need one.

retire in Ecuador

A simple Ecuador pleasure is a just caught fresh from the sea….fish for a dollar.

If you are planning a simpler life, you may want to consider retiring in Ecuador.

Create Extra Investment Income the Simple Way

If you plan to retire in Ecuador or are saving for a later retirement, you’ll want to increase profit and safety.

This is possible even in the recession because for the first six months of 2009 JGAM’s low risk strategy has been their best performing strategy.  With a 100% loan their low risk portfolio has risen 11.4% or at a 23% per annum rate.

Here is an excerpt from our latest multi currency lesson:

JGAM believes that this low risk strategy will remain productive for the rest of 2009 for several reasons.

First they do not believe that the economic recession is over yet.  JGAM expects the turnaround to be L-shaped (not V-shaped). This means economic growth is not expected to return to normal levels in a foreseeable time.

This economic stall creates a lack of growth that will limit corporate earnings potential and keep inflation in check.

A slow economy, without inflation, favors bonds and leaves equities at risk.   JGAM does not expect inflation to be a real threat in the near future.

Short term rates are also likely to be kept artificially low by governments to help the banking industry.   Banks are making huge profits by paying low rates on client deposits and lending the funds at higher long term rates.

Here is an example of how leveraged bonds work. Two bonds available now are:

US$ 5% Korean Electric Power  (A rated ) due 17 – 01 – 2017 paying a yield of  5.05%

GBP 5% Rep. of Hungary due 06 – 05 – 2014 price paying a yield of 10%.

Assume an investment of $100,000 in each bond… from a $100,000 investment plus a $100,000 US dollar loan at 2.75%.

The average yield per annum is 7.52% or $15,050, less $2,750 loan costs.

That leaves a $12,300 return or 12.3% per annum instead of a 7.52% return on an unleveraged $100,000 investment.

Both managed and advisory clients with JGAM can invest in a leveraged low risk portfolio but managed portfolios can obtain the greatest advantage of the strategy.

The two benefits of a managed portfolio are JGAM’s active monitoring make international investing simple plus gives the ability to invest in a wide range of global securities that are not available for most advisory clients.

Americans who live in the US but have advisory accounts cannot buy most overseas bonds.  US advisory clients who live outside the US can buy these bonds.

Ecuador Organic & Green

Ecuador, organic & green ideas can create wealth in the new economic era.

I’l say more on Ecuador organic gardens in a moment.  First, let’s look at organic and green ideas north of Ecuador in the USA and elsewhere.

multi-currency-debt

A recent message mentioned that we have enhanced our strategic alliance with Jyske Bank by co hosting a international investing course with Jyske Global Asset Management (JGAM) at the Naples Beach Club.  The shot above was taken of the Naples Beach Club golf course.

Each day Merri and I strolled down the beach from the hotel to the Naples pier.

investing-green

During the day we talked with delegates attending the seminar.  My speeches looked at some great opportunities for investing in green ideas.

Herein lies the rub.

Golf courses… beaches surrounded by commerce… the opulence of Naples is about as far from green as can be… yet this is what attracts so many of the bucks!

This series shows how the big economic problems today create big, new opportunities.

The greatest asset we can have in the economic era ahead is an ability to serve… to produce a product or service that adapts to new ways of living as they unfold.

One of these new ways will be green.

Merri and I left Naples (our home for more than 20 years) because it had transformed from a sleepy fishing village into a glittering metropolis. This was not us.  The lifestyle there is complex now and hard to sustain.

Though our global travel for 41 years leaves us with a terrible carbon footprint and makes us look like jet setters, Merri and I are basically simple, recluse home bodies,  happier weeding our garden and watching our sunflowers sprout, than flying off to a grand metropolis.

I usually work here on the front porch…

Ecuador-green-investments

watching my grapes, raspberries, squash, tomatoes and…

ecuador-green

sunflowers that…

ecuador-green

by late summer will look like this.

sunflowers

Merri and I are such common people… so like, so many our age… that usually whatever we like, many millions of others like as well.  We count on this fact in our investing. We feel for what we like, knowing there is a market for that feeling.    This has paid us, over the years, well.

During the current economic transformation green may suffer… but in the end  humanity cannot ignore the problem of sustainability.  This means that green investments may offer special value now.

Here are excerpts from a recent Times special report entitled “It will Pay to Save the Planet”:

It’s no secret that U.S. workers are in trouble, with the unemployment rate at 8.9% and rising. At the same time, the world faces a long-term climate crisis. But what if there is a way to solve both problems with one policy? A number of environmentalists and economists believe that by implementing a comprehensive energy program, we can not only avert the worst consequences of climate change but also create millions of new jobs — green jobs — in the U.S. “We can allow climate change to wreak unnatural havoc, or we can create jobs preventing its worst effects,” President Barack Obama said recently. “We know the right choice.”  According to a report by the U.S. Conference of Mayors, there are already more than 750,000 green jobs in the U.S.

Environmental advocates say that with the right policies, those job figures could swell. The Mayors’ report predicts that for the next three decades, green employment could provide up to 10% of all job growth.

Because the environment creates a huge problem… there is also great opportunity in the thoughts behind this series.

Now imagine this… a guy sitting deep in the North Carolina woods reporting about Ecuador to tens of  thousands of people in a flash. We gave up our print publishing business and moved to places where we mostly walk rather than drive… built a super insulated natural house all to make our lifestyle and business greener.

You can do this too… if you wish or something of this sort… something that interests you.  There are so many green ideas and opportunities.

Many of these organic… green ideas are in Ecuador.

Here are a few ways suggested in previous messages that you can earn income that are greener than the norm.

My internet business allows me to be very green in Ecuador and North Carolina. Here I am with my Macbook amidst tall locust trees on the farm.

Few ideas will totally reduce our carbon footprint.  Yet we can consume less when we work from home and deliver electronic rather than physical products.  When we void commuting we reduce travel, road wear and use less gas.  We pollute less.

multi-currency-debt

I talked about green investing with these speakers at the Naples seminar.  Left to right: Samuel Rachlin,  Rich Checkan, Steve Blumenthal, Joe Cox, John Mauldin, Gary Scott, Lars Stouge. Thomas Fischer Moderating.

Our multi currency course has been tracking green portfolios for years. The green portfolio we have tracked for years include:

Vestas:  Danish Wind Turbine manufacturers.

Q Cells AG: German Solar Panel Makers.

Kurita Water: Japanese Water Purification Company.

Hyflux: Singapore Water Purification Firm.

NonoZymes: Danish Enzymes Manufacturer.

Seche Enviroment: French Environmental Porducts Firm.

I reviewed this green portfolio with my Jyske Global Asset Management adviser,  Anders Nielsen.  Here I am with  Anders at the Naples seminar.

multi-currency-debt

He recently wrote that Jyske recommends some of the green shares in our green portfolios now and said:

Jyske Bank has a buy on NovoZymes, with a target price of 515 Danish kroner (the current quote is 417.00 DKK).

Jyske Bank has a buy on Vestas, with a target price of 495 Dansih kroner (current quote is 399 DKK).

Jyske Bank does not have recommendations on the rest of the companies, but Anders passed on recommendations from other analysts from the Bloomberg system.

Ecuador & Longevity #3

Ecuador & Longevity #3

Some Ecuador valleys are famous for longevity because where you live has an important impact on how long you live.

ecuador-longevity

Vilcabamba an Ecuador valley of longevity is beautiful and…

ecuador-longevity

these remote Ecuador valleys can offer healthy lifestyles.

How you live, regardless of where you are, has an even more important impact on longevity.

The two previous messages at this site, Ecuador & Longevity and Ecuador & Longevity #2 look at several secrets to long life and good sun health.

The most important thing I have learned about health, wealth, longevity and fulfillment is to turn your passion to profit.

Many people are so miserable at work that they would happily abandon their jobs if they had enough money to feel rich.

In reality, money is not richness or wealth. This requires a state of mind instead. One way to develop this everlasting wealth is to create a PIEC experience.

PIEC is an acronym for “Personal Income Earning Corridor.”  This is the personal concept Merri and I use.

Traditionally people get jobs to create income. They work to live and support their lifestyle while attempting to spend less than they earn. Maybe the savings will bring, some time in the future, a lifestyle of doing something enjoyable without work.

PIEC investors reverse the priorities. Instead of working for money to save and invest. They focus their prime effort on doing something they enjoy right now. Then they learn how to enjoy the effort in some profitable way. They learn to create “Avenues of Abundance” that combine lifestyle with the necessary task of accumulating wealth.

For example, if a PIEC investor loves golf; instead of working six days a week, 50 weeks a year just to golf on Sundays and during short vacations, instead he’ll create a business in some aspect of the golfing trade.

In another example, a client of mine, who loved animals became a vet. But he learned that the vet’s lifestyle was not one he enjoyed. He wanted to travel and move around, which is difficult for a professional who needs to stay at his office and build a practice. So he built a business that prepares special animal foods for race horses. Now he travels globally visiting horse breeders and makes much more money as well.

PIEC investors combine money with time, energy and desires. They generate income doing something desired. Desire and fulfillment become at least as, if not more, important as the money.

Doing What You Love!

The reason PIEC investing works well is that when we love to do something, we do it better, for longer and with greater enthusiasm.

These are wealth building attributes that cannot fail. Yet PIEC investing does not mean we should suddenly abandon our jobs and try becoming golf pros, when we have never been able to break 100. Smart PIECS often require a gradual approach.

When  you make the decision to do what you love, keep physical activity in mind.

For example, as a writer and lecturer, I was never fully satisfied sitting behind a desk or standing on a podium all day long, even though I was making over a million bucks a year. I’m the physical, outdoors type and yearned for exercise and the wilds of the deep woods. “What good’s the money if this isn’t fun or fulfilling?” I often asked myself.

Rather than quit writing and teaching, I looked for ways to combine these professions with the outdoor life.

Through research I learned that many like myself yearn to be in the primitive outdoors. We bought an isolated farm high in the Blue Ridge Mountains and an Andean plantation high in Ecuador where we live and work.

Being in the mountains allows me to combine my writing with physical walks in the woods and the outdoor physical work that a farm requires.

For example to help our Land of the Sun foundation carry out its work in the Andes we often visit the upper villages. Here we are with a work party.

ecuador-longevity

This work requires us to do a lot of this.

ecuador-longevity

Uphill from our home down there…

ecuador-longevity

next to the Cathedral… requires plenty of walking…. uphill.

ecuador-longevity

A PIEC lifestyle allows you to incorporate healthy habits into your wealth building process.  Take exercise for example.

Malcolm Gladwell points out in his book “Outliers, The Story of Success” that for work to be fulfilling it must offer:

#1: Meaning

#2: Autonomy

#3: Complexity

#4: A relation between effort and reward.

If physical labor can be incorporated into this mix… so much the better.

ecuador-longevity

Western expats playing tennis at Club Hacienda El Atillo, Resort & Spa in Vilcabamba may not have the same longevity as…

ecuador-longevity

these potato farmers we met on one of our Andean hikes uphill.

In Ecuador valleys of longevity there is no such thing as  exercise as we know it in the Western World.   Long lived people do not discipline themselves to pack up everyday and go to a gym.  Their days are filled with meaningful activity, like climbing  slopes to harvest food.  They do not have formal exercise, but rather a life full of activity that creates meaningful reward.

On our Blue Ridge farm… improving the land brings financial as well as physical rewards. Turning this…

ecuador-longevity

to this…

ecuador-longevity

requires a lot of this.

ecuador-longevity

Taking this…

ecuador-longevity

and making…

ecuador-longevity this, needs…

ecuador-longevity

plenty of this.

ecuador-longevity

The physical activity feels good… is good (in moderation) for the body and is enhanced by the financial rewards of seeing the land’s value increased…. plus the joy of the beauty and seeing our friends enjoy the land.

Our crops require…

ecuador-longevity

hauling bags of dirt…. seed… hoeing, digging and brings rewards like this…

ecuador-longevity

Wonderful flower displays…. seeds to eat, plant and sell.

If a lifestyle has so little activity that it requires regular trips to the gym to maintain physical integrity, the only real reward from the exercise is the ability to do well in the gym… or to survive unexpected activity.  Often the exercises are related to pain rather than pleasure.  This diminishes the effort.

Activity that requires physical labor and brings “other” rewards is more effective.  The other reward creates meaning.

For example, when I am in Ecuador taking photos is meaningful to me, compliments my writing and creates physical exercise.

Most days I try to walk up a mountain.

ecuador-longevity

Plus having meaningful work enhances our importance to the world and this is of extreme importance because in Ecuador’s longevity valleys,  aging is seen as a merit.   People are given more respect and valued more as they grow older.

It is said that the Vilcabamba residents look forward to getting older, to become more mature as a person…. so they can share their experience and wisdom with the community.

How you live, regardless of where you are, has important impact on longevity and living your life to its PIEC.  This can add years to your life and enhance your health and wealth. Keep life simple by enjoying your PIEC system.

Ecuador & Longevity

Ecuador is known for the longevity of many of its residents.

National Geographic published a great article, “Every Day Over 100 is a Gift” that outlined how and why residents in some Ecuador valleys like Vilcabamba live much longer (up to 130 years) than in the West.

vilcabamba-ecuador-back-yard

View of Vilcabamba from Club Hacienda el Atillo , Resort and Spa.

Yesterday’s message Ecuador and global investing pointed out that May 2, 2009 was the 41st anniversary of my investing and working globally.  That message ended with my plans for sharing the next 41 years with you.

Don’t Believe it?

62? Plus 41?  103? Could this be true?  I have a great grandparent (from Wales) who lived to 106, so why not?

Expecting to live long (I mean really expecting) makes it is more likely that you will. One of the greatest health risks we have is buying into the social myth that we should retire at age 65.

Every ancient text of wisdom suggests that 50 years of age is the midpoint… the time when life becomes more spiritual, wiser and that we have 50 or  more years to go.  If you are Biblical try rereading the book of Leviticus.

I believe this.  Below you’ll see  someone who agrees!

How will you look when you are 97?

ecuador-longevity

This is a photo of Shigeaki Hinohara this year at age 97.  The photo was taken from an article at japantimes.co.jp entitled WORDS TO LIVE BY Author/physician Shigeaki Hinohara by Judit Kawaguchi.

Here is an excerpt from that article (the address for the entire article is at the end of this message).

At the age of 97 years and 4 months, Shigeaki Hinohara is one of the world’s longest-serving physicians and educators. Hinohara’s magic touch is legendary: Since 1941 he has been healing patients at St. Luke’s International Hospital in Tokyo and teaching at St. Luke’s College of Nursing.

Always willing to try new things, he has published around 150 books since his 75th birthday, including one “Living Long, Living Good” that has sold more than 1.2 million copies. As the founder of the New Elderly Movement, Hinohara encourages others to live a long and happy life, a quest in which no role model is better than the doctor himself.

Energy comes from feeling good, not from eating well or sleeping a lot. We all remember how as children, when we were having fun, we often forgot to eat or sleep. I believe that we can keep that attitude as adults, too. It’s best not to tire the body with too many rules such as lunchtime and bedtime.

All people who live long — regardless of nationality, race or gender — share one thing in common: None are overweight. For breakfast I drink coffee, a glass of milk and some orange juice with a tablespoon of olive oil in it. Olive oil is great for the arteries and keeps my skin healthy. Lunch is milk and a few cookies, or nothing when I am too busy to eat. I never get hungry because I focus on my work. Dinner is veggies, a bit of fish and rice, and, twice a week, 100 grams of lean meat.

Always plan ahead. My schedule book is already full until 2014, with lectures and my usual hospital work. In 2016 I’ll have some fun, though: I plan to attend the Tokyo Olympics!

There is no need to ever retire, but if one must, it should be a lot later than 65.

Share what you know.

When a doctor recommends you take a test or have some surgery, ask whether the doctor would suggest that his or her spouse or children go through such a procedure.

To stay healthy, always take the stairs and carry your own stuff.

My inspiration is Robert Browning’s poem “Abt Vogler.” My father used to read it to me. It encourages us to make big art, not small scribbles. It says to try to draw a circle so huge that there is no way we can finish it while we are alive. All we see is an arch; the rest is beyond our vision but it is there in the distance.

Pain is mysterious, and having fun is the best way to forget it.

Don’t be crazy about amassing material things. Remember: You don’t know when your number is up, and you can’t take it with you to the next place.

Science alone can’t cure or help people.

Life is filled with incidents. On March 31, 1970, when I was 59 years old, I boarded the Yodogo, a flight from Tokyo to Fukuoka. It was a beautiful sunny morning, and as Mount Fuji came into sight, the plane was hijacked by the Japanese Communist League-Red Army Faction. I spent the next four days handcuffed to my seat in 40-degree heat. As a doctor, I looked at it all as an experiment and was amazed at how the body slowed down in a crisis.

Find a role model and aim to achieve even more than they could ever do.

It’s wonderful to live long. Until one is 60 years old, it is easy to work for one’s family and to achieve one’s goals. But in our later years, we should strive to contribute to society. Since the age of 65, I have worked as a volunteer. I still put in 18 hours seven days a week and love every minute of it.

These are some great tips and Hinohara is proof of the pudding that we can improve our chances of longevity anywhere!

There is such an important connection between good health, longevity and wealth that Merri and I incorporate longevity sessions into our courses, especially your shamanic mingo tour.

Good food, like this fruit at the Cotacachi Ecuador farmers market is important to longevity.

Here is what some previous delegates have said about our tours.   These tours  change lives in more than just monetary ways as some of the delegates who have attended previous courses have written.

“For years and years I have searched for truly like- minded people to play with and work with… people who are deeply and honestly SPIRITUAL.”  J.M. Texas

ecuador-longevity

Longevity comes in safe places were even small children like this Andean girl are allowed freedom from crime day and night.

Here is another rave from a delegate:

“People who, among other things, are active and productive and creative and resourceful, whose word can be counted upon; People who realize that spirituality DOES NOT mean sitting in a cave contemplating your navel and weaving baskets, nor does it equate in the Western culture with living in abject poverty. People who realize that abundance is not a dirty word. People who understand that we are here to ENGAGE life, not to submit to circumstances out of fear and ignorance and apathy; People who don’t just use the most current “buzz words” so they can feel like they are part of the group, but who actually DO something… Builders. Thank you for showing up in my life.” E.W. Nevada

Here is a sacred valley we will visit on our Ecuador shamanic tour and another rave”

“The life path altering effects from the weekend with you and Merri continue. Thank you again. I have begun to change my diet. Bless you! “ D.B. Connecticut

ecuador-longevity

Knowing who supplies your food is important to longevity… as are places of person to person commerce, like these markets we visit on our Ecuador Shaman tour.

Here is what another delegate said.

“You are indeed a spiritual pioneer, blending disciplines to create tools and resources for success in this new land of opportunity. Anyone who thinks this is just all about money is missing the real message: This is about life in its most profound implications.” W.P. Australia

ecuador-longevity

Having sources of fresh food, like this Cotacachi Ecuador corn field, nearby is good for longevity.

Here is another endorsement:

I want to thank you for the wonderful time. I traveled from California to hear you convey your knowledge in the way you do so well, and I wasn’t disappointed. The amount of information in the sessions was almost overwhelming, but it’s exactly what I went to hear. When I try to engage intelligent, educated people on these subjects here at home, I usually get a blank look or “That’s interesting, but why are you thinking about that? “The setting at the farm felt like we were all sitting in the den after dinner discussing things among friends. The relaxed atmosphere seemed to encourage people to participate, asking pointed questions and relating personal experiences. The international flavor and attitude of the group was very stimulating, particularly when we split up into discussion groups. Those groups, taking walks together, allowed us to get to know each other on a personal level. Anyway, what I’m trying to say is, that’s the most fun I’ve had for four days straight in along time! Thanks again.” B.R. California

ecuador-longevity

Longevity and living in harmony with nature go hand in hand.  Here is a humming bird in Cotacachi. Ecuador has one of the largest bird diversities in the world.

One more comment from a delegate:

“A special warm ‘thank you’ to Merri for the wonderful cooking and the ‘feel at home atmosphere!’ I like to give a few comments about the past weekend.. It was relaxing, inspiring, informative and a spiritually balanced atmosphere with all these different, same thinking, like people. The technical information I gathered was most not new to me, but I like to compliment you for putting it all in the right perspective and to make it very understandable to all. What was a tour opinion one of the most important gaining of these 3 days is the opening of the new world, this new circle of what you call “normal” people! (I call us ‘not normal’ as a matter of respect to the majority. ) But as we know, all is relative and depends at the point of view of each, His spiritual mind and his opinion about the senses of our being.”
