Christmas is celebrated in the Andes with colorful processions as the Indigenous dress in their finest and bring gifts of fruit and produce, which they lay before the image of the Christ Child in the pesebre, or manger scene.

The twelve days of Christmas begins tomorrow, (some traditions start the 12 days on the evening of December 25th with the following day considered the First Day of Christmas (December 26th).  These Twelve Days of Christmas are the twelve days from Christmas until the beginning of Epiphany  (January 6th; the 12 days count from December 25th until January 5th).

In Ecuador they are more strongly celebrated than in North America… each day rich with meaning.

Today though is the day of giving gifts.  We can learn from giving and the three Chaldean Magi, Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar, who took the Baby Jesus three precious gifts.

The gifts themselves do not tell the tale, but the symbols behind the offerings are what we can wisely use.

Caspar brought Gold for the King as a symbol of abundance. Melchior offered Frankincense to the Priest within the Child which signifies wisdom. Finally Balthasar carried precious Myrrh for the Physician that this Wonder Child would be… the symbol for prophesy.

They saw that Christ would be a King, a Physician and a Priest and the gifts send the message to have balance in our lives. To take care of our wealth, look after our health and maintain a positive moral spirit.

Here is an Ecuador Christmas Eve Thought for All.

One great part of Christmas in Ecuador… especially in the Ecuador villages is less commercialization of Christmas.

The Cathedral next to Meson de las Flores, gets busy during the Holiday season at Ecuador’s Christmas… not the stores.

We wish you three ideals of all Christmas… wherever you live… whoever you are… whatever you do.

Tomorrow’s holiday, celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. The thoughts in this holiday are so rich in inspiration that everyone can gain blessings from these regardless of culture, religion or creed.

To see this, may I share three stories of Jesus given by those from other religions and cultures that have been meaningful to me?

Cotacachi Cathedral in the…

middle of the day.

The first story came from an Ecuador Yatchak and reminded me of the ideal “That we are eternal.” This belief was fortified many years ago when an Andean shaman and I discussed the concepts of life and death.  When I made  mention of death, he replied quite sharply. “Do you not see? There is no death,” he said. “Did you not listen to the message from Jesus?”

A Huron Indian carol reminded me that wisdom was not contained in just South America’s history.

This carol touched my heart by sharing the ideals that there is always hope and renewal in an Indian way. This carol evolved from a legend of Deganaidah, the Peacemaker. This mythic person was known as the Man from the North and was said to be born in the Wendot tribe (Huron) on the northern shore of Lake Ontario. Tradition says he was born of a virgin who had been visited by a messenger of the Great Spirit Tarenyawagon, who was bringing a messenger to give lasting peace to mankind. Here is the carol:

Twas in the moon of winter time

when all the birds had fled,

The mighty Gitchimanitou

sent angels choirs instead.

Before the light the stars grew dim

and wandering hunters heard the hymn

Jesus your King is born,

Your king is born.

Within a lodge of broken bark

The tender babe was found

A ragged robe of rabbit skin

Enwrapped his beauty round

The chiefs from afar before him knelt

With gifts of fox and beaver pelt.

Oh children of the forest free

O sons of Manitou

The holy child of earth and heaven

Is born today for you.

Come kneel before the radiant boy

Who brings you beauty, peace and joy.

You can see that the Cathedral  seen from Mt. Cotacachi dominates the village.

An even more ancient poem reminds me that the influence of Jesus.

I was reminded of the third ideal, that we are always cared for if we place our lives with God, when reading the 14th century Sufi (Islamic) poet Rumi. His beautiful poem reminds us of the wisdom shown in Matthew 6:24: Jesus says, “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”

Here is Rumi’s poem:  Lovers think they’re looking for each other, but there’s only one search: wandering this world is wandering that, both inside one, transparent sky. In here there is no dogma and no heresy. The miracle of Jesus is himself, not what he said or did about the future. Forget the future. I’d worship someone who could do that. On the way you may want to look back, or not. But of you can say, there’s nothing ahead, there will be nothing there. Stretch your arms and take hold the cloth of your clothes with both hands. The cure for pain is in the pain. Good and bad are mixed. If you don’t have both, you don’t belong with us. When one of us gets lost, is not here, he must be inside us. There‘s no place like that anywhere in the world. RUMI

Though this is perhaps the lowest price for roses you will see, these roses are special, not like anything offered in a store or even at most florists. These are premium roses with extra large heads that open fully.

Fresher Quality Roses

Most roses go from Ecuador to Miami by air are stored in Miami then shipped by truck until they sit in a store. They can be a week or more old when you see them. The roses you receive from this offer are cut and stored overnight, driven by refrigerated truck to Quito airport and flown to Miami to a special refrigerated Fedex facility until, then flown to your Fedex destination for immediate delivery to your home or office. The roses your receive are certified by Veriflora. The VERIFLORA seal is a real, green program that regularly spot check farms for ecologically sound systems that include:

1- Water and ecological conservation: implementing water management systems to prevent depletion of fresh water supplies.

2- Product quality: implementing practices to ensure the quality of the product through the whole chain of delivery to the final consumer.

3- Advanced agricultural practices: integrating organic practices wherever possible. To only use approved green label certified pesticides. To allow no discharge of pesticides run off into the environment.

4- Waste management: recycling and composting as well as the proper disposal of agricultural chemicals.

By March of 2007 the co-op that sends your roses had certified 144 acres.

A recent Ecuador Living message looked how Lee & Peggy Harper rented this Cotacachi country house for $150 a month.

Lee found this on his own by asking around in town. There is no such thing as a listing service in Cotacachi, … or not until I start one anyway! Lee entered a pharmacy and got talking to the owner. He let it be known in his very basic Spanish that he was looking for a place to live.

By the way, Lee gained his Spanish basics on one of our Super Thinking – Super Spanish course and the rest he continues to pick up by not being afraid to try and communicate.

The lady in the pharmacy had a cousin with this house. There were a couple of others Lee was looking at but he thought it would be rude to not accept such a great offer at such a cheap price.

This Cotacachi property is some 4 miles outside.  Lee and Peg used the local bus to get to town for 20 cents a day. The bus runs every 45 minutes but the catch to this cheap rental is that the bus is invariably full.

Then Lee and Peg decided to rent in Cotacachi and hit pay direct again.

There are some condos which were being renovated right next to our hotel. (The boarded up building on the left._

Now…they look like this (the yellow building). Lee and Peg were able to rent a condo there for just $150 a month.  Some downsides about this. We’ll get to that in a moment.

This is a brand-new 1,200-square-foot apartment and their low rent helps them keep their total monthly expenses around $600. This includes food, utilities, medications and doctor’s visits, haircuts and manicures, laundry bills, cigarettes, a couple of cases of beer, and food for their two dogs.

They love Cotacachi, finding the people friendly and enjoy a real sense of belonging to the community.

Cotacachi sits between two stunning volcanoes…Mt. Imabura

and Mt. Cotacachi.

The area is largely dependent on agriculture which means the food is good, abundant and absolutely fresh.

There is no great night life, but after a day mountain sunshine and fresh air the nighttime is for sleeping.

This lifestyle leaves people feeling good!   Lee says:  I haven’t felt this good in so long I can’t remember.  I used to take pain medication, but here I rarely take an aspirin. I don’t pick up a phone or get on the computer. I used to be glued to all that at home.

Not all Cotacachi rentals are so low. The typical condo is renting for $400 to $500 a month.

For example we rent the house below in Cotacachi at $500 a month with access to internet, free phone calls to the US, Europe and Canada, plus a full served breakfast  (all at our hotel a few blocks away).

This is a rustic, but new, casita.

This unit is about seven minutes walk to our hotel El Meson de las Flores. Rent of the house includes free full served breakfast plus free broadband and free phone calls to US, Canada and Europe…all available at the hotel…not in the casita.
