Friend of ours for the past 25 years, Ed and Phyllis Sabo lived just 5 blocks from us in London when we lived there.

When Ed retired from Shell Oil 11 years ago he and Phyllis visited us and fell in love with the countryside up here.

They decided to stay on and look for a farm themselves.  After a month of fruitless search, the day they were ready to go our next door neighbor called and said… “We are selling our farm”.   Ed and Phyllis visited and bought that farm the same day… 34 acres with a nice farmhouse on Little Horse Creek, a garage and barn.

Sadly Ed passed and Phyllis has decided to sell the farm.   Their property line stretches up to the top of the mountain and meets our land… so we have for years walked back and forth through the woods.

Here are some shots to help you understand the lay of the land.

Driving along John Alley Rd., you see the farm starting just past the horse is the neighbor’s pasture.

Phyllis has put the farm on the market and would just like to get back what was put in… about $189,000.  The house is a fully furnished (except couch) Johnny Appleseed built in the 1940s about 1,200 square feet but with a basement.   Considering that the farm has a creek flowing through it and two large meadows, and that a farm house on the other end of our farm is for sale at $302,000 (with much less meadow) this is good value.

Tilloo is also just an easy boat ride to “Little Harbour” and Pete’s Pub on South Abaco.  Little Harbour is a world unto itself — with a colorful history and Pete’s Pub, Art Gallery and Foundry are at the center of “Little Harbour” culture.  It is a bit reminiscent of “Gilligans’s Island”  a true beach bar and restaurant on the sand.  And they have an annual violin concert by a world renowned violinist  (The Red Violin) on New Year’s.

There is a lot of unique Bahamian entertainment, eateries, shopping available via quick boat trip.  There is also an easy “cut” (passage) near this land which provides access from the protected Sea of Abaco to the deep Atlantic Ocean for deep sea fishing.  Yet Kayaking in various creeks and mangroves is also within paddling distance in several directions.  A beautiful private, white sand Sea of Abaco sheltered beach at the Tilloo Banks is just 5 minutes from the land.

Just a few minutes more by boat there is a National Sea Park (protected no fishing area) with mooring balls available for fabulous snorkeling on the coral reef.   So many colorful fish it is amazing.  Abaco is also fantastic for scuba divers.  Gorgeous coral reefs and fish, caves, “blue holes” and many shipwrecks all make for great diving.   For a water person there is always lots to do.

“Dust” Featured

“Dust,” Hugh Howey’s latest book, was featured in the Thursday USA Today Best-Selling Books list.  See our earlier message that featured an eight minute interview with HughHowey if you missed it.

Self fulfilled writers often have two things in common. First, they have always had a desire (usually surprised) to write. Second, they get their background for writing in life, not school.

Take Jack London as an example. I loved his books as a kid “The Call of the Wild”, “White Fang” the short story “To Build a Fire”.

As a schoolboy, London often studied at a bar and professed a desire to attend university and  to pursue a career as a writer.

Yet London gave up his educational opportunities and became a writer.

When he was 21 and a student at the University of California, Berkeley; London quit school and went to the Klondike.

Later he worked at a cannery, then bought  a sloop and became an oyster pirate before becoming a member of the California Fish Patrol.

He signed on a sailing schooner bound for Japan, then had grueling jobs in a jute mill and a street-railway power plant before he became a tramp which led him to 30 days for vagrancy in the Erie County Penitentiary.

The many experiences as a hobo and a sailor and in the Klondike helped him write.  This is a thread that weaves through lives of so many successful writers.  It is their life experiences that create the magnificence in their stories.

Life experiences rather than education are the threads that weave through many writers’ lives…and bring magnificence to their stories.

Another good example of earning potential is my friend Hugh Howey.   He was working for $10 an hour in a book store when he self published his novel Wool, typing in a storage room during his lunch breaks.

Soon he was earning over $100,000 a month on Amazon.com.  This helped secure a six-figure book deal from Simon & Schuster, and an option for film by Ridley Scott, director of Blade Runner and Alien.

Weak Dollar Strength

A weak dollar strength creates potential for profit.

Many readers have been asking me if a strong US dollar makes it better to buy Ecuador real estate. The answer is that the greenback’s rise and fall are a neutral event for real estate in Ecuador or any country that uses the dollar as its currency.


Ecuador real estate like Vistazul condos at the Ecuador beach are not much affected by the dollar’s rise and fall.

However the dollar’s rise does create profit potential because a rising currency with  fundamental weakness is a sign that the strength is from human greed or fear.  This type of upward momentum usually overextends and rarely lasts long.

Hence the currency opportunity now.

In this case the rising  greenback is not supported by economic facts… due to the negative US current account, the US trade deficit and the US debt.

An excerpt from a New York Times article, America’s Sea of Red Ink Was Years in the Making by David Leonhardt explains why the negative fundamentals that apply pressure on the buck are not likely to change soon enough to maintain the US dollar’s rally.

Here is the excerpt:  There are two basic truths about the enormous deficits that the federal government will run in the coming years.

The first is that President Obama’s agenda, ambitious as it may be, is responsible for only a sliver of the deficits, despite what many of his Republican critics are saying. The second is that Mr. Obama does not have a realistic plan for eliminating the deficit, despite what his advisers have suggested.

The New York Times analyzed Congressional Budget Office reports going back almost a decade, with the aim of understanding how the federal government came to be far deeper in debt than it has been since the years just after World War II. This debt will constrain the country’s choices for years and could end up doing serious economic damage if foreign lenders become unwilling to finance it.

The story of today’s deficits starts in January 2001, as President Bill Clinton was leaving office. The Congressional Budget Office estimated then that the government would run an average annual surplus of more than $800 billion a year from 2009 to 2012. Today, the government is expected to run a $1.2 trillion annual deficit in those years.

You can think of that roughly $2 trillion swing as coming from four broad categories: the business cycle, President George W. Bush’s policies, policies from the Bush years that are scheduled to expire but that Mr. Obama has chosen to extend, and new policies proposed by Mr. Obama.

The first category — the business cycle — accounts for 37 percent of the $2 trillion swing. It’s a reflection of the fact that both the 2001 recession and the current one reduced tax revenue, required more spending on safety-net programs and changed economists’ assumptions about how much in taxes the government would collect in future years.

About 33 percent of the swing stems from new legislation signed by Mr. Bush. That legislation, like his tax cuts and the Medicare prescription drug benefit, not only continue to cost the government but have also increased interest payments on the national debt.

Mr. Obama’s main contribution to the deficit is his extension of several Bush policies, like the Iraq war and tax cuts for households making less than $250,000. Such policies — together with the Wall Street bailout, which was signed by Mr. Bush and supported by Mr. Obama — account for 20 percent of the swing.

About 7 percent comes from the stimulus bill that Mr. Obama signed in February. And only 3 percent comes from Mr. Obama’s agenda on health care, education, energy and other areas.

Alan Auerbach, an economist at the University of California, Berkeley, and an author of a widely cited study on the dangers of the current deficits, describes the situation like so: “Bush behaved incredibly irresponsibly for eight years. On the one hand, it might seem unfair for people to blame Obama for not fixing it. On the other hand, he’s not fixing it.”

When challenged about the deficit, Mr. Obama and his advisers generally start talking about health care. “There is no way you can put the nation on a sound fiscal course without wringing inefficiencies out of health care,” Peter Orszag, the White House budget director, told me.

Second, even serious health care reform won’t be enough. Obama advisers acknowledge as much. They say that changes to the system would probably have a big effect on health spending starting in five or 10 years. The national debt, however, will grow dangerously large much sooner.

“Things will get worse gradually,” Mr. Auerbach predicts, “unless they get worse quickly.” Either a solution will be put off, or foreign lenders, spooked by the rising debt, will send interest rates higher and create a crisis.

So whether you invest in Ecuador, overseas or just in the US… the current US dollar strength could be a weakness that create profit for you.
