Andean Music

Andean music has had a powerful impact on Western Culture.

dylan

Bib Dylan singling “One more cup of coffee for the road”.

The people of the Andes love traditional music.

Ecuador-music

Some Andean music, like the ancient poetry opera called Harawi from the Incas. is hard for me to understand.

Ecuador-music

Yet Western Opera is hard for me to appreciate as well.  Yet Western musicians have turned a lot of traditional music into modern.

Take Bob Dylan’s One More Cup of Coffee for the Road. This song… even Dylan’s look and feel (right down to the rose in the hat) resemble Harawi. The violin music is almost, if not, the same.

Music can be looked at in two forms, modern music and traditional music.

Ecuador-music

Andeans love traditional music pre and post Spanish. Pre Spanish Andean music has a much smoother melody.

Modern Music emerged when composers began to put their names to their scores.  Since that time composers have wanted their music to be theirs, about them and about their times.

This allowed their songs, concerts and symphonies to be at the forefront of humanities evolution. Such music foments change. From Beethoven, Bach, Mozart to Elvis, these people created music that led the population to think, feel and question “Who am I, what am I doing, what is right and wrong?”

Traditional music is older and quite different, rarely given to one composer, and used for the exact opposite purpose. The melodies and rhythms of Traditional music tell historical stories and binds cultures by inhibiting change. Traditional music creates a message of comfortable belonging.

The flesh is mortal but these songs are everlasting, connecting members of cultures into the deepest mists of their history.  Individuals come and go, but the traditional songs and their binding force remain. They unite the future and past in an endless tune.  Take the ancient African rituals with their deep soul grabbing beat as an example. Feel how their beat melds our hearts with the group and pulls one into the sweet embrace of nature’s deepest roots.  There is sweet comfort in this belonging.

We can learn a lot about a society… about the current times… about how people in that society are feeling… and even where economies might head by listening to how the music of a culture is evolving.

Ecuador-music

Andeans play music everywhere and for everything. Here is the opening of a local soccer match.

Ecuador-music

When El Presidente came to Cotacachi…

Ecuador-music

The local band was there.

Cultures that are immersed solely on traditional music often use a circular, non lateral thinking mind set.  Merri and I learned this while living with American natives in Ecuador. Their haunting, beautiful music tears the heart and heightens every emotion-sweetness, joy, love, pain, melancholy. There is a song for every occasion, each full of lessons. They play the same songs again and again, as have their past ancestors, year after year. They live and think in the same way, in a circular mode without innovation. They have little expectation of change or betterment in their lives.

This may be one reason the Andeans are so sweet.  They play music…

Ecuador-music

and old.

Ecuador-music

The Andeans…

Ecuador-music

are often intense about their music and…

Ecuador-music

they work…

Ecuador-music

hard at their music.

Yet they always seem…

Ecuador-music

to have fun and worry more about today than the future.

Ecuador-music

This circular way of life, Merri and I learned from the life we had wit the shamans and the Andean clouds, is a sweet, easy, low stress way of living.  Yet this thought process is not very effective at keeping up with changing times.

Is that bad… or good?

One of the ancient Andean legends tells of a time when the Eagle of the North and the Condor of the South will fly in the skies together.  This means a tie when mankind will integrate his heart with his mind… more feeling… less logic perhaps.  Live a little more for today and a bit less for the future.

El Cóndor Pasa (Flight of the Condor) is an example of traditional music turned modern. It is one of the Andes most famous songs composed from the zarzuela El Cóndor Pasa by the Peruvian composer Daniel Alomía Robles in 1913 and based on traditional Andean folk tunes. It is possibly the best-known Peruvian song worldwide due to a cover version by Simon & Garfunkel.

Some times I wonder if simple is not a better way?

Since later today we are announcing a complicated, logical schedule, of 52 courses and tours in 2009, this morning I would like this morning to share here a simple tune that stimulates the heart perhaps more than the head…  El Condor Pasa… the song of the Andes.

Why not click on this tune and take three minutes to just relax.

Internet Business & Freedom

An internet business can set us free.

Technology and a global economy allows us to enjoy our business where the sun shines for us.

Broadband has really allowed me to be free with my internet business.

ecuador-internet-business

I do have a very nice office… with a wonderful desk given to me by a friend when he moved from NC to Ecuador!  Honestly I rarely use it.

I like to move around while I work and technology means… I can!

At one stage Merri and I lived in a really remote part of Ecuador… 45 minutes off the highway down this road.

ecuador-internet-business

Our hacienda was at the tip of this bluff.

ecuador-internet-business

This was my front room view.

ecuador-internet-business

We lived with a Taita Yatchak and his apprentices and had no electricity  and no cell phone coverage. I charged my laptop from our old Land Rover. Once a week we drove into town, downloaded messages, sent and picked up email.

Seem strange?  Technology allows our internet businesses to give us even more freedom than this as is explained in a recent USA Today article entitled “Your office: At home, in a tent, or something more formal” by Laura Petrecca.

The article first tells about Katy Leakey who operates jewelry business from a tent in Kenya.  She uses VOIP phone calls, e-mail and Skype to run a global business.  She lives with the Maasai in the Kenyan bush yet sells her jewelry online and in U.S. retail stores.  She turns her passion into profit and also helps the world since she reinvests a portion of her business income in local projects, roads or schools to help the people of Africa.

internet-business

At times a table in the sunny courtyard of our hotel Meson de las Flores is my office.

The USA Today article reviews other mobile internet businesses. Here is an excerpt:  Kathy Levinson’s office environment is vastly different (from Katy Leaky).  The real estate agent works in a 10-foot-by-12-foot refurbished storage closet in the basement of her Port Washington, N.Y., home. She made the windowless office cozy by adding carpet, fresh paint and soft lighting. Leakey and Levinson are part of a surging group: business owners who work from home or in remote or mobile offices. Nearly 9% of all North American adults operate a business out of a home, according to Forrester Research. And the number of people who work remotely will continue to increase worldwide, according to research firm IDC.

Many factors will contribute to the continued growth of remote working. They include technological advances, the desire for more life/work balance and the desire of retiring Baby Boomers and older adults to keep working for personal and financial reasons.

“Folks in their 60s, 70s and 80s have 35 or more years (of life) to enjoy and pay for, but not everyone wants to be a greeter at Walmart,” says Joanne Pratt, a futurist and researcher who has studied the effect that technology has on home-based businesses. She expects many in these age groups to operate businesses from home. “That gives them the luxury of enjoying so-called retirement while keeping a hand in and earning income.”

Laptops, broadband make it possible!

Levinson and Leakey have disparate careers, work styles and offices. Yet they credit the same necessity with enabling them to run businesses on their own terms: technology.

Souped-up laptops, speedy broadband Internet connections and low-priced global phone plans have helped empower millions of people to ditch traditional office settings and run businesses from their homes, cars, vans or even a tent.

Small-business owners now have access to “more powerful tools that used to be available only to large enterprises,” says IDC mobile enterprise research analyst Sean Ryan.

Lower costs, no commute.

There are many lifestyle benefits to running a home-based business: no commute, working in sweatpants and the array of readily available food in the kitchen refrigerator.

There are also some financial benefits. Home-based businesses take in less revenue than businesses that lease space, but they keep more money because there is no rent or other expenses that go with leasing, according to Pratt’s research for the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Office of Advocacy.

I love our bubbling creek so sometimes stroll to our deep woods office on Little Horse Creek and work there.

7 Fundamental Laws of Your Own Internet Business

Knowing this ancient wisdom gives seven steps to calling on a vast pool of inner intelligence that we can combine with the wonders of modern technology. This combination leads us easily and stresslessly to a healthier and more enjoyable way of creating income and wealth.

#1: All Investments are Controlled by just a Few Natural Laws

Step to take: Look for fundamental economic laws which serve society rather than just for hot investments.

“The ideals which have lighted my way to face life cheerfully have been Kindness, Beauty and Truth. The trite subjects of human effort-outward possessions, outward success, luxury have always seem to me contemptible.” Albert Einstein

#2: All Natural Laws of Economics are Dynamic

Step to take: Look beneath the balance sheet.

“What have you in your houses? And what is it you guard behind fastened doors? Have you peace, the quiet urge that reveals your power? Have you remembrance, the glimmering arches that span the summits of your mind? Have you beauty, that leads the heart from things fashioned of wood and stone to the holy mountain?  Tell me are these things in your houses? Or have you only comfort, and the lust for comfort, that stealthy thing that enters the house as a guest, and then becomes the host and then a master?  Ay and it becomes a tamer and with hook and scourge makes puppets of your larger desires. Though its hands are silken, its heart is of iron. It lulls you to sleep only to stand by your bed and jeer at the dignity of the flesh. Verily the lust for comfort murders the passion of the soul and then walks grinning in the funeral.” Kahil Gibran

In Western society, we are fooled by triple illusions of material wealth. These illusions are net worth, balance sheets and money. These are measures that never show true wealth and can change quickly.

Such undependable measures of wealth lead to never-ending restlessness. They are like looking at a picture of a picture of a picture and treating this picture as if it were real.

We look at how all business are ideas and how dynamic nature is so too must our business be.

#3: All Wealth is Within

Step to take: Listen to your inner intelligence.

“The course of human history is determined not by what happens in the skies but by what takes place in our hearts.” Sir Arthur Keith

#4: All Economic Laws are Ruled by Cause and Effect

Step to take: Learn to give.

“It is truly one of the most beautiful compensations of life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

#5: The World’s Economy has Infinite Abundance

Step to take: See the infinite possibilities.

“Water is everywhere around you but you see only barriers that keep you from the water.” Rumi
#6: All Economic Laws are Simply Energy and Desire

Step to take: Give attention to intention.

“Put your heart, mind, intellect and soul even to your smallest acts. This is the secret of success.” Swami Sivanada

#7: The Only Certainty is Change

Step to take: Embrace change.

“Do everything with a mind that lets go.” Achaan Chah.

When in Cotacachi, I work from our studio and watch the sunrise over this view.

When on Ecuador’s coast I work on the balcony of our beach front apartment and watch the sunset.

We live in miraculous times.  The current economic downturn moves us along… to where we really want to be.  Ancient wisdom and modern technology take us from there.

Small Business Tangled Idea

Here is a tangled small business idea that can untangle complications in your life and career.

Cotacachi-Otavalo

See how this woman may help make your life better… and you hers.

This tangled thought begins with two of the major themes at this site… “turn your passion into profit” and “embrace change”.

Yet momentum off us keeps us locked in a rut… until something like the recent economic crash breaks or ends our routine or job.

Such seeming problems can lead us to our real passions and desires.

otavalo-Ecuador

People like this can make a new business for you fun… and you theirs.

Excerpts from a recent USA Today article “For some, hard times are a gateway to new careers” by Rick Hampson explains how (the bolds are mine): To  cope with the recession, people like Sussy Deleon are coming up with creative ways to make a buck. Listen to Deleon, who was in real estate, describe her new business: selling pinatas handcrafted by artisans in Guatemala.

For millions of Americans, the recession has been a curse. For a relative few, it’s something more complicated: A catalyst for change. An opportunity to grow.  A kick in the butt.

In some cases, economic necessity has been the mother of re-invention. It has forced people to pursue careers they might never have considered if they hadn’t gotten — or quit before getting — the ax.  Their optimism is based on two convictions: That even in hard times, people still will spend on things like their dogs, their kids and their looks; and that things such as flexible hours, casual dress and a shorter commute are worth a few lost dollars.  Above all, they agree that if they hadn’t been pushed, they never would have made the leap.

Andrea Kay, author of Life’s a Bitch and Then You Change Careers, says many people hang onto jobs they don’t like, oblivious to the fact that their unhappiness — which they mistakenly think they can hide — hurts their performance and attitude.

It’s the same in every economic downturn, says David Kyvig, a Northern Illinois University historian who wrote Daily Life in the United States, 1920-1940: “When things are going well, we tend to stay with what’s working. When they don’t, we explore something new.”  In a surprising number of cases, we’re happier — “if, after the shock, anger and fear, someone is willing to see there’s an opportunity to do something different,” Kay says. “Then they ask, ‘Why did I wait so long?’ “

Research indicates that workers who change jobs generally are more satisfied in their new positions than their old ones, even though they often take cuts in salary and benefits, AARP economist Sara Rix says.

A new idea

Sussy Deleon got her idea for a recession-proof business at her son’s first birthday party.  The young guests couldn’t break the piñata to get at the goodies. The piñata, made in China, was cardboard, not wire-and-tissue paper like those in Deleon’s native Guatemala.  When the recession dried up her real estate sales practice in Providence, she decided to import piñatas handcrafted by Guatemalan artisans in designs ranging from animals to clowns to spaceships. Deleon, 39, sells them at her new shop, the Piñata Center, for $40 to $50.  “People still have some money to spend, and they’re going to spend it on their kids” — particularly on special occasions, she says.  After four months in business, Deleon’s begun to make enough to cover her costs.

A passion Caroline Blake knew what she didn’t like — her job — and what she did — animals. The result was a new career in pet care.  A year ago, Blake, 29, of Kenilworth, N.J, was a recruiter for an IT consulting firm that was laying people off. Fearing she was next, she quit. She bought a Fetch! Pet Care franchise for $10,000. Some friends were skeptical. “You’re leaving a good-paying job to walk dogs?” she says one asked.

Blake often works seven days a week, starting as early as 6:30 a.m., with a last walk at 11 p.m. She went three months this summer without a Sunday off.  She has integrated pet care into her lifestyle — while sunbathing around the pool or watching TV. She’ll even jog with a dog.
She charges $18 for a 30-minute visit and $55 a night to keep a dog overnight at her home. She also provides overnight sitters. She says she still makes a fine living, about 75% of what she earned as a consultant. “Smartest thing I’ve ever done,” she says. “Every day, a different dog.”

Trying something different Springs, 45, was laid off in April. In her next job she wanted security, and she wanted to make things with her hands. After considering more gender-typical jobs — nursing, teaching — she settled on a six-month welding program at Central Piedmont Community College, with $4,000 in tuition and fees covered by federal stimulus money.  She’s the only woman enrolled in the six-month program. Her first welding job should pay $28 to $32 an hour, about twice what she made as a driver.  “When you get knocked down, you brush yourself off and get up,” Springs says. “My daughter’s watching my response. Does she see me wallow in pity or try something different?”

Cotacachi-Otavalo

Meet these Otavalo textiles producers  at our next Ecuador export tour Oct. 21-24 Ecuador Import Export Tour

Help these wonderful people expand their businesses as you begin yours.

Or come to our January 2010 Ecuador export tour.

May I add that we have done  a pretty good job helping readers start their own business already? Here are a few examples of small businesses that have been started with our help.

From Sandra, a restaurant owner:

“Dear Gary and Merri, yes I did it! Without you and your wonderful writing class I would not have been able to see my potential!! I THANK YOU BOTH! You told me to write about what I know and I did. Thank you for all the encouragement. Starting today, we are taking orders and I wanted you to be the first to know! So here goes…..I have some exciting news to share! I have just written my first book and very much appreciate your help. This book would make a great gift for any bride-to-be or even the parents of the bride (especially if they’re paying the bill)! Please check it out. I genuinely appreciate you helping me spread the word! Thank you!! Sandra”

Recently Sandra wrote again: Hi dear ones,  I just wanted to share an update with you.  Look what we are doing for Feed The Children and introducing our hCard Program to their schools!  Remember it was at your meeting, that Marvin and I met.  He is now our vice president!

Remember the book I wanted to write while attending your class in the mountains…….I did finish it and now it has been “purchased” as an online downloadable version. for a network marketing company.  Learn more about Feed the children and Sandra’s book form Sandra Burnett at sburn10@aol.com.

From Jerusha, an anthropologist:

“Hello Gary and Merri. I am the first in the class to publish! I published a calendar!

“I posted the lulu site on the forum because it looks like a good place to start for people. It is a lot of fun and very easy to do. Jerusha”

From Todd, a wedding photographer:

“Thanks, Gary and Merri name recognition is beginning. Here is my new photoletter that your program helped me develop. I’m getting more clear about my own marketing now, so I may be able to better advantage of it. I am planning now to send out an email once a week showcasing new photos and creating awareness for my products and services. By mid July, I will place my first greeting card order (with a printing company Merri recommended in Cotacachi). So, I will soon have an inexpensive product to offer along with the more expensive prints that I sell. So far, I’ve got 60 opt-on subscribers to my email list, and I am telling everyone I know about it, so it’s starting to grow nicely. My first goal is to have 1000 readers. I’ll see how quickly I can accomplish it. Take care, Todd” Learn more about Todd’s business at todd@toddsmithphotography.com

From Mickey, a real estate broker:

“I want to say thank you for the inspiration and encouragement that I received through your publishing program. I recently published a 28 page booklet” Naples is Priceless “. This FREE booklet is being distributed through the Chamber of Commerce, banks, hotels etc. With over 25 years as a Naples Realtor I can now let potential real estate buyers gain knowledge and inside tidbits about this beautiful area. Again, thank you for helping me develop my potential. Micky”

From Michelle who was on disability: “Hi Guys, I have been working my tail off applying the stuff that I learned from both your publishing seminar. Amazing how much meat I keep pulling out of those conferences! I want you to be the first ones to know that I just finished my first e-book: “A Practical Guide to Social Security Disability Benefits”. I am very excited!

Ecuador’s Season

Our belief in Ecuador, as a place to live and invest, comes in part because of its position in the seventh wave of the industrial revolution.

We conducted our International Investing & Business Course last weekend here at the Jefferson Lansing Golf resort clubhouse.

ecuador-season

We reviewed cycles and seasons… how Ecuador opportunity and business in Ecuador really pick up at about this time of the year.  Ecuador’s up season is coming up.

Seasonality is a really important factor of investing to keep in mind… especially right now… as we will see below.

First, in that course we looked at the Asset Allocation of my portfolio and…

Ecuador Property      15%
US Property                46%
Total Real Estate   61%
Equities                           3%
Emerging Bonds            9%
Bonds                             14%
Cash                                13%
Total Liquid              39%

Why I have so little in the stock market now is due to cycles, seasonality and personal values.

Regarding seasonality, October is the bewitching month of  shares.

We viewed how, since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the western economy has been moving through fifteen-year upward and downward cycles.  We saw how we are in the tenth year of a potentially 15 year downward wave.

Since the 1800s the stock market has moved in 30 year waves, peaking in bubbles and ending in troughs. Technology, warfare and politics are all related to these cycles. The phrase that coined this great social economic transformation we call the “Industrial Revolution,”  according to historian David Landes, was first in a letter of 1799 written by French envoy Louis-Guillaume Otto.

Since that time mankind has enjoyed ten boom cycles… each created by new technology. Each boom has been followed by a bust… a bear market… a down wave that lasts about 15 years…. for 310 years.

So it is appropriate that in information era up wave  (the dotcom bubble) the Dow topped at 10,336  and then crashed Oct 1, 1999… 300 years after the first revolution began.

Here is a chart of the Dow in that 10th upward period from www.finance.yahoo.com.

ecuador-season

That crash began the current 15 year side ways model that marks the downward cycle.   The peaks and valleys, consistent with the downward wave has slaughtered many investors which, I explained at the course,  is why I have so few equities now.

Seasonality is why I  am not buying equities in October as well.

We viewed how seasonality was at work. Over 30 years the Dow has grown 8.16% overall but all of that growth and more (8.36% per annum average)  has come in the months of November through April. The average annual growth per annum over thirty years in May  to October is only 0.37%.

In other words… October is a volatile month for shares.  In fact the worst days of  the US stock market have been in October.

Black Thursday was October 24th in 1929. During that frenetic day nearly 13 million shares changed hands, nearly four times the norm.  Black Tuesday was October 29, 1929.   The market was slashed again leaving the Dow 40% down in that week.

ecuador-season

Black Monday  was October 19, 1987, global equity markets crashed, starting in Hong Kong. Panic rushed to Europe and then knocked the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) down 22.61%, its largest one day drop ever.

ecuador season

In short the good equity growth season is about to begin.

Market timing is never more important than the search for value… but it sure can help the search for value.

Seasonality studies give support to the current bear market recovery but suggest the support is best after October.

Plus watch out for a severe October market correction!

Thomas Fischer from Jyske Global Asset Management was with us and pointed out that JGAM’s  low risk portfolios have a very underweight position in equities as well.

During the course we also looked at the importance of personal values in investing by enjoying the process.

We saw some great autumnal beauty…

ecuador-intuition

in the Blue Ridge during the course.  We walked some glorious paths.

ecuador-intuition

Yet this is an El Nino year… a cold winter is predicted.  A long one maybe.

Excerpts from a 19 August 2009 UN New Center article entitled “El Niño weather pattern likely to continue into 2010, explains why: The United Nations agency dealing with weather, climate and water says an El Niño event has begun in the tropical Pacific and is likely to continue into early 2010.

El Niño and La Niña bring significant temperature fluctuations in surface waters of the tropical belt of the Pacific Ocean: an El Niño event sees a rise in temperatures and La Niña witnesses a drop in normal temperatures.

These temperature changes are strongly linked to major climate fluctuations around the world, especially in Latin America, Australia and East Asia, which can last for a whole year or more. Both El Niño and La Niña can disrupt the normal weather patterns and have widespread impacts on climate in many parts of the world.

The UN World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said today that sea-surface temperatures in the eastern equatorial Pacific had risen to between 0.5 and 1 degree Celsius warmer than normal by the end of June, with similar temperatures in July.

“Scientific assessments of these observations indicate that this warming resembles the early stages of an El Niño event,” the Geneva-based agency stated in a news release.

In its most recent update on the subject, WMO stated that the expectation is for El Niño conditions to very likely prevail through the remainder of 2009 and into the first quarter of 2010.

Last year our autumn paths in October turned…

ecuador-season

to this in November.

ecuador-season

Here was the weather report yesterday Oct.14 2009 at Asheweather.comRainy, cold, and raw about sums it up for today. High temperatures for the day were early this morning; We’ll slip into the lower 40s for the rest of the daytime as rather steady rain continues. Watch out for thick, dangerous fog along the Blue Ridge today through much of Thursday. And yeah, we weren’t kidding about that weekend snow shower thing. Gory details below.

Here are some weather statistics for our area that suggest what  happens in Southwest Virginia and Northwest North Carolina (where we are in the Blue Ridge) during an El Nino year.

Roanoke’s snowiest month on record was January 1966, with more than 41 inches. That was during an El Nino.

Roanoke’s coldest winter on record was that of 1977-78, which also had more than 37 inches of snow. That was during an El Nino.

Roanoke got 19 inches of snow on Feb. 10 and 11, 1983. That was during an El Nino.

Roanoke’s snowiest year of the 1950s (1957-58), second snowiest of the 1990s (1992-93) and snowiest of the 2000s (2002-03) each in the 28-to-30-inch range occurred during El Ninos.

Long term patterns in weather or stock markets are no guarantees… but by looking at the odds wouldn’t you rather invest in equities at a time that historically has shown the highest appreciation year after year.   And though snow and cold are not guaranteed up north, wouldn’t you rather have this in the dead of winter (Mt Imbabura) or…

ecuador tickets

Ecuador airfares are reduced right now, but Ecuador savings go way beyond travel costs.

Ecuador real estate costs are rising, but prices are still low and there are enormous savings from visiting or living  in Ecuador.

ecuador-savings

This note sent by a reader shows this fact in details.   He wrote:

Gary, I hope all is well.  I thought you might get a kick out of this even know you know it is true.

This is how it started, I got a call Saturday night from my wife who lives in Ecuador. I was needed down there to sign some papers for some land we just purchased again.

I ended up getting a great deal? within minutes after my conversation with my wife the same Saturday night through Lan.com I booked a flight for the coming Monday (labor day) going there was $279 nonstop coming back on September 15th is where they got me the return trip was $644 nonstop after some discounts the round trip was 9 hundred and change not that good of a deal but I was able to leave the states under 48 hours I had not much time to organize.

My text to my friends will explain the rest read below.
———-
Monday labor day while all you guys are sleeping I am in the airport working on my laptop and waiting to depart at 10am Ecuador by 4pm I have only $64 dollars and a small plastic bottle full of change for $64 if I had too I could live the rest of week in Ecuador I already have it planned out it will cost me $3 for the taxi ride to my place me and my wife will eat out tonight for $10. Once I get to my place I have a car so don’t have to worry about taxi fees and the gas here is $1.38 a gallon I could fill up my car for less than $20 but with my finance situation at the moment I will only put $10 in gas. This leaves me with $41 dollars. Tomorrow Tuesday morning me and my wife will eat out again for breakfast $4 each we will have eggs, bacon, ham, fresh fruit, fresh fruit juice and yogurt total cost for the both of us $8 and $1 tip. From there we are going to the beach (Salinas) we will hit a .25 toll and lots of vendors we will buy some bottles of water for .35 each and some fruit for $2 we will get 2 bottles of water 1 bottle of lemonade, 2 bananas and 2 pastries this will hold us off till dinner time. Once we get to the beach we have a friend that loans us his apartment and I have $29 left with this $29 dollars this night we will eat out again $10 go to the movies for $6 and $5 for nachos, a drink and tomorrow morning Wednesday we will eat out again $8 this leaves me with $0 and that bottle of change I am sure at least another $10 with this we will eat Lunch, plenty of fluids till dinner time and plenty of ATM machines in walking distance. This will be almost 3 days on $74 dollars.

I am now 33 years old very successful in the rat race in the states for the last 5 years I have been coming down to Ecuador I have been setting myself up down here and now besides my beautiful wife and a family we are going to start. I own several lots on the coast, a car, an apartment and starting to construct my first condo on the coast, involved in some other projects as well and in 2010 I will be retiring in Ecuador at 33 years old living the good.

Cotacachi Ecuador Condos for Sale

Here is a Cotacachi Ecuador income opportunity for sale.

Merri and I began buying fixer upper Ecuador real estate at really bargain basement prices when Ecuador’s economy collapsed.

This creates some Ecuador bargain potential for you.

We negotiated over a year to buy this building.  It was a mess.

fixed it looks like this…

If a person spends time in Ecuador  and stays alert, he’ll see many incredible fixer upper bargains.  However there is also great potential for those who like to be landlords (which Merri and I do not).

Merri and I bought this four story office building… we cleaned it up and converted it into condos.

This was the third floor kitchen… another mess.

Anyone can have a nice place like this but the process requires work and patience.  Instead you can own this building already completed.

Global Investment Advantage

The big advantage to global investments is that the sun always shines somewhere.

ecuador-opportunity

Follow the sun… and the opportunity… like this (a Galapagos Ecuador sunset actually).  There is opportunity here.  See why below.

Ecuador real estate offers great opportunity, but lets expand our investing view globally… then we’ll see more Ecuador real estate.

Recently, on the anniversary of the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers, Ben Bernanke said that the US recession is probably over but the economy will remain weak for some time due to unemployment.

He said, “From a technical perspective, the recession is very likely over,”  He said the consensus is the economy is growing yet added that the economy would still feel “very weak” to Americans concerned about job security.   The stock market was not impressed and Wall Street fell  lower.

According to Jyske Global Asset Management, (JGAM) retail sales jumped 2.7% in August, the fastest rise in more than 3 years, but much of the spending came from the “cash for clunkers” boost and “back to school” month related sales. They question if Bernanke is correct.

JGAM also pointed out that the US dollar continued to slide hitting a 2009 low at 1.4748 to the euro while gold rise above $1,000 oz.

JGAM’s managed portfolios have performed very well.  Year–to-date they have risen between 8.7% and 28.7% depending on the risk profile and portfolio.

What can one do?

First, remember that the sun always shines somewhere as evidenced by a September 17, 2009 New York Times article entitled “Recovery Picks Up in China as U.S. Still Ails” by Keith Bradsher.

Here are some excerpts:  Investors’ interest in the real estate market is picking up as economic growth returns across the Chinese economy.

Just eight months ago, thousands of Chinese workers rioted outside factories closed by the global downturn.

Now many of those plants have reopened and are hiring again. Some executives are even struggling to find enough temporary staff to fill Christmas orders.

The image of laid-off workers here returning to jobs stands in sharp contrast to the United States, where even as the economy shows signs of improvement, the unemployment rate continues to march toward double digits.

In China, even the hardest-hit factories — those depending on exports to the United States and Europe — are starting to rehire workers. No one here is talking about a jobless recovery.

Even the real estate market is picking up. In this industrial town 90 miles northwest of Shanghai, prospective investors lined up one recent Saturday to buy apartments in the still-unfinished Rose Avenue complex. Many of them slept outside the sales office all night.

“The whole country’s economy is back on track,” said Shi Yingyi, a 34-year-old housewife who joined the throng. “I feel more confident now.”

The confidence stems from China’s three-pronged effort — a combination of stimulus, liberal bank lending and broad government support for exports.

The Chinese Central Bank said the country’s economy surged at an annualized rate of 14.9 percent in the second quarter. The United States’ economy shrank at an annual rate of 1 percent in that period.

“So often China and the U.S. are mixed together as being in the same situation, and that is totally wrong,” said Xu Xiaonian, an economist in Beijing with the China Europe International Business School.

But with more economic planning than the United States, China has been able to disburse its stimulus much faster, turning it into new rail lines and highways.

The state-controlled banking system here — which breezed through the global financial crisis with minimal losses as American financial institutions reeled — unleashed $1.2 trillion in extra lending to Chinese consumers and businesses in the first seven months of this year. That money is financing everything from a boom in car sales, up 82 percent in August from a year earlier, to frenzied factory construction.

To be sure, not all the laid off workers throughout China have been hired back.

“Some plants reduced worker numbers by 20 to 30 percent, now they hire back 10 percent,” said Stanley Lau, deputy chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries, which represents export-oriented factories employing 10 million Chinese workers.

Global investors can kill two birds with one stone… invest in a faster growing economy and diversify out of the US dollar by investing in Chinese equities.

One way to invest in China is with the Jyske Invest China Equities Fund. This fund is available to non US residents and can be contained in portfolios of US residents managed by JGAM.

Jyske Invest recently wrote at its web site:

Market Comments, Q2 2009

Still signs that the economy will improve. For the second quarter, the fund generated a return of 38.01%, outperforming the benchmark by 0.21 percentage point. For the year to date, the fund posted a return of 40.71%, underperforming the benchmark by 1.38 percentage points.

Review

Over the past quarter the economic indicators continued the good trend. The PMI indicator, reflecting the general economic development, has now increased in six out of the latest seven months. When the PMI indicator is above 50, it is an indication that the economy is growing, which was the case in the past three months. The improvement of the economy has occurred earlier than expected.

Consumption indicators also show a positive trend. This is clearly reflected in the fund’s equities within consumption. Prices of several of the fund’s producers of sport equipment and cars such as China Dongxiang and Dongfeng Motor increased in particular.

There are clear indications of a turnaround in the real estate sector. The number of transactions increases sharply and the number of unsold apartments is on the decline. Our allocation to Chinese real estate companies has been high, which had a favourable impact on the relative return.

Outlook

We expect the favourable economic development to continue into the last six months of the year and that the government will continue to pursue a relaxed policy. The risk is that the policy is tightened again, which will adversely affect the equity market.
The market is no longer undervalued. Perhaps the valuation is fairer. A positive economic development and increasing earnings must drive equity prices higher now. The development in earnings estimates will be followed closely.

Jyske Invest adds that past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results. The value of and return on your investment may fall, and you may not get back the full amount invested.

The fund invests chiefly directly and indirectly in equities issued by companies which are based in China including Hong Kong or which pursue more than 50% of their activities (by sales or production) in China including Hong Kong.

Risk factors

The fund’s investments have a high risk profile and may see substantial fluctuations in the market value of the fund’s assets. The objective is to obtain a higher average return over time.

Performance of the fund for the last five years is below:

Investors in China and/or the yuan should exercise caution and recognize that there can be short term volatility.   There are huge amounts of borrowed dollars invested in China and any time there is a wave of fear or profit taking this thinly traded market and the yuan can drop rapidly.  For example in August 2009 18.4%, or nearly 500 billion yuan of the funds in the market were pulled as investors locked in profits on the Chinese stock market.

There had been months of gains, so the sudden pull back was not surprising as doubts about valuations and the sustainability of the economic recovery began to grow with rising prices.   Shanghai’s stock market declined 21.8% in one month.  There can be sudden and sharp pressure any time investors turn cautious.  However after the 21% drop in this market, autumn may be a better time to buy.

More Electric Investing Ideas

Will the Volt put voltage back into General Motors shares?

electric-car

Will the new Chevy Volt add energy into an electric investment portfolio?

Probably not… because small is beautiful.

In this era of rapid change a company’s value is its idea… less its size and experience.   A monster organization like GM… even trimmed down comes from the muscle car experience. Changing course from the “Giddiyap 409” attitude to “Go Green” requires enormous effort.

Yet who will come out ahead?

Chinese? South Koreans…. even Japanese?  Europeans?

The Japanese and Europeans have the benefit with their small, crowded nations, narrow and winding roads. They have always had to think smaller than in the US, where soft big and fast were the norm.

Japan’s gas prices are almost double those in the US and Europe’s are sometimes triple…. so when America’s cars were getting bigger… Europe’s and Japan’s were shrinking.

The Chinese and South Koreans are relatively new to the game so their mindset may not be as formed.

Americans did not learn much from the 1980s oil crisis.  Americans made pretty crappy, small cars at that time… the Dodge Reliant…  yuck!  No wonder Chrysler went broke.

non-electric-car

The Ford Mustang had fallen from its great beginning to a miserable low and the Chevy Malibu wasn’t any better.  We should not be surprised that the Japanese grabbed so much market share.

non-electric-car

GM rebounded with the Suburban.  Ford watched F150 pickup sales soar. Chrysler  made the minivan an every day affair and American drivers moved from gas guzzling muscle cars to gas guzzling SUVS and trucks.

Here are reader comments from our last message about green investing.

Greetings Gary, Thank you for printing the electric engineer’s letter. He is a smart guy, and used good illustrations. In his passion for reminding us that a battery is like a bucket [of course he is right] he managed to throw out the benefits of the battery out the window.  I hope he doesn’t impede you from reporting on new tech you hear about in the future. We all knew what you intended. The real point is reducing our grid use [via wind solar, whatever] and being able to store it economically. If this battery works it is the breakthrough you reported.  Please don’t lose your passion, tell us as many of the details of the vision you see, please. Happy Trails, and keep up the good work.

No chance I’ll lose my passion! I have grand kids and my children are really passionate about this so they push me right along. From the investing point of view, I know that big problems create big opportunity and there are few bigger problems than environmental pollution.

Here is another reader:  In response to the solar battery section of this post, it may interest you to access National Geographic’s August’s “Picture of the Month”.  Scout around the site until you find the series of photos from their recent article on the current state of solar power technology.

You may know that the WSJ recently had an article about a meeting Correa had with a Russian delegation to discuss Russian help building a nuclear energy plant in Ecuador. The WSJ (which hates Correa) was on red alert. But the general feeling in other media is that the Russians are meddling in “our” backyard in response to us meddling in “their” former sphere of influence, particularly those missiles in Eastern Europe.  I continue to be puzzled why no one in Ecuador, or interested in Ecuador, is looking at developing a solar power industry. Apart from the obvious abundance of stable and intense year-round solar radiation, a distribution system along the north/south axis of the Andes would avoid all the problems of moving oil and gas through mountains and volcanoes from the eastern Amazon basin west to the Pacific ports for trans-shipment.

The lack of solar would seem a puzzle until one thinks it through. Solar power is still costly and poor nations tend to go with the least expensive choice.   Plus who would help?  Solar could make Ecuador independent and no one seems to have that on their agenda.

Mankind must become greener. This is a huge problem and because problems create opportunity, demand for electric cars that help the environment may continue to grow.

When looking at investment ideas in electric cars think small… the winners are not likely go come from America’s… big (mostly busted) three.

See Jyske Bank’s Financial Friday including an interview about electric investing in cars.

Cotacachi Olympics

Last year our Ecuador Living website introduced the Cotacachi Olympics.

The way to solve many of the world’s social and economic woes is to help youth worldwide gain confidence to learn skills that will make them productive.   Increased affluence in poor places is far more effective than vast armies in providing global security.

We aim our business and the activities of our foundation towards creating employment and improving education.

This is why we support the Cotacachi Olympics  program started by our friend, Jorge Quilumbaqui, to promote the ability of the Ecuador Indigenous to help themselves.

Cotacachi-Olympics

Jorge started off as a laborer but now is considered to be one of the indigenous elders in Cotacachi, an example to younger generations of how to prosper in what, years ago, was a difficult environment.

Here’s Jorge, second from left, with Cotacachi’s former mayor Auki, standing with some of the medal winners from last year’s event. (The past mayor next to Jorge is wearing the white hat.)

Jorge hasn’t forgotten his roots though and employs dozens and dozens of builders in his various projects as well as local girls in his hotel in Cotacachi, Sumak Huasi.

Our friend and reader Dave Wharton was Australia’s Pentathalon entrant in the Sydney Olympics.  He sent down his Olympic torch for the second Cotacachi Olympics.  Here is Dave with the torch.

Cotacachi-Olympics

Dave sent this note to the Cotacachi Olympians:

GREETINGS FROM AUSTRALIA.
REMEMBER THE LEGENDARY CHASQUI MESSENGERS!!

In 2000 I ran with this TORCH,which carried the flame that started the Olympics in Sydney. There were many torches but only one flame that transferred from torch to torch all the way from Athens in Greece to Sydney in Australia.

In 2003  I brought the TORCH to Ecuador and runners carried it from the Mayan Ruins at Ruminchico outside Quito to Vilcabamba de Loja. Along the way many runners joined us in helping to revive the memory and spirit of the famous CHASQUI runners who came centuries before.  The run was organized by Oswaldo Munoz of  Nuevo Mundo Expeditions in Quito.

I wish Jorge Quilumbaci,Officials and Competitors success in running your MINI OLYMPICS and hope to visit you one day.

CHASQUI DAVE WHARTON
AUSTRALIA

This introduction was translated and read in Spanish and Quichua to the young Cotacachi Olympiads.

Chasqui runners were the main form of communication for the Inca Kings. The Incas did not discover the wheel and lacked a writing system but they set up a relay system for delivering information along the Capac Yan (Inca Trail). Only the swiftest athletes were chosen, usually running 2 miles at a time often covering 200 miles in under 24 hours.

We hope this contribution will further inspire the youth of the Andes onto great things.
