International Business & Investing Expanded

There is expanded international business and opportunity because wage earners and retirees in most of the Western world are being set up. This can create great international business and investing opportunity for you.

ecuador-real-estate

In a moment see why this Ecuador property offers such good value.

Whether this “set up” is on purpose, or not, is a subject of lively contention… but the intention doesn’t really matter much.   The results… created innocently or intentionally will be the same.  Disaster for the middle class.  However opportunities in international business, investing and lifestyles mean that you do not have to share in the loss.

We can begin to understand this fact with three simple thoughts.

The first thought is that the US is currently experiencing deflation. You can see from this graph from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

small-business-statistics

The December 2008 message Multi Currency Inflation at this site, asked the question… will there be inflation or deflation.

Now we know.

The second thought is that the deflationary forces are creating inflationary fundamentals like we have never seen before. The inflation stage is set. This is a formula that means disaster for most… but this does not have to apply to you.

One reader just wrote:  I’m thinking a ‘creative way’ to fix a problem and work through one’s passion will not handle the whole situation.  I hope I’m wrong and you have an even better idea. Medicine and doctors.  Savings stripped.  Destruction of people’s lives and stability.  All done with intention.

The dollar is  going down the toilet, and the best option I see the Fed and Government taking (for themselves, not for us) is to have a debit system.  The debit system would pay people, and would pay others from the people’s account.  People would no longer research to save taxes.  Their accounts would automatically be debited with whatever the government deems able to be taken.  The funds would filter through the Central Bank to be certain the funds are going only where the government it should go.

There is no more representative republic.  There is no more self determinism.  There are no more freedoms as you can be controlled through your debit card.  If government decides you are an ‘unworthy person’ they can easily take all of your nest egg.  If Congress can so thoroughly devastate us overnight one time, they can do it again.  I have a real hard time thinking about a creative way to generate income.  I trust not a congressman.  I certainly do not trust the current administration.  I don’t think they’re through with us.  Best Wishes to you Gary.

Many readers share thoughts like this. I know that so many of you are suffering. Yet I must say: economics will get worse. Fortunately they will then get better.

This leads us to the third thought… which is “the common person who will bear the brunt of the upcoming inflation.”

Yet you do not have to suffer.

A USA Today article “Wages could hit steepest plunge in 18 years
by Dennis Cauchon and Paul Overberg” explains the problem. Here is an excerpt:  A bad economy and low inflation are starting to drag down wages for millions of everyday workers and freeze benefits for millions of retirees.
Average weekly wages have fallen 1.4% this year for private-sector workers through September, after adjusting for inflation, to $616.11, a USA TODAY analysis of Bureau of Labor Statistics data found. If that trend holds, it will mark the biggest annual decline in real wages since 1991.
“Wages are usually the last thing to deteriorate in a recession,” says economist Heidi Shierholz of the liberal Economic Policy Institute. “But it’s happening now, and wages are probably going to be held down for a long time.”

Yet falling income for wage earners and retirees is meeting huge potential inflation according to the October 16, 2009  New York Times article  “$1.4 Trillion Deficit Complicates Stimulus Plans” by Jackie Calmes.

Here is an excerpt: The Obama administration said Friday that the federal budget deficit for the fiscal year that just ended was $1.4 trillion, nearly a trillion dollars greater than the year before and the largest shortfall relative to the size of the economy since 1945.  The shortfall for the fiscal year 2009, which ended Sept. 30, translates to 10 percent of the economy.  Economists generally agree that annual deficits should not exceed 3 percent of the G.D.P., and that is the level President Obama had vowed to reach by the end of his first term in 2013.  At 10 percent of the gross domestic product, the 2009 deficit is the highest since the end of World War II, when it was 21.5 percent. At the same time, many Americans are demanding further help, confronting forecasts that job losses will not peak until mid-2010.  Representative John A. Boehner of Ohio, the Republican minority leader in the House, rejected that position. “It is irresponsible for Democrats to continue spending taxpayers’ money we don’t have to fund an agenda that would destroy the jobs we need to get our economy moving again,” Mr. Boehner said.

The problem looks even worse according to another October 16 2009 USA Today article entitled “Obama team makes it official: Budget deficit hits record. By a lot.” Excerpts say: The Obama administration has released new deficit numbers, and they are not pretty.  The deficit for Fiscal Year 2009, which ended Sept. 30, came in at a record $1.42 trillion, more than triple the record set just last year.  In addition, future deficits are currently projected to total $9.1 trillion in the coming decade.

Yet while the wage earner suffers… others are becoming rich according to an October 17, 2009 New York Tines article entitled
“Bailout Helps Fuel a New Era of Wall Street Wealth” by Graham Bowley.

Excerpts say:  Even as the economy continues to struggle, much of Wall Street is minting money, many Americans wonder how this can possibly be. How can some banks be prospering so soon after a financial collapse, even as legions of people worry about losing their jobs and their homes?
It may come as a surprise that one of the most powerful forces driving the resurgence on Wall Street is not the banks but Washington. Many of the steps that policy makers took last year to stabilize the financial system — reducing interest rates to near zero, bolstering big banks with taxpayer money, guaranteeing billions of dollars of financial institutions’ debts — helped set the stage for this new era of Wall Street wealth.  A year after the crisis struck, many of the industry’s behemoths — those institutions deemed too big to fail — are, in fact, getting bigger, not smaller.  Now, the industry has new tools at its disposal, courtesy of the government.  With interest rates so low, banks can borrow money cheaply and put those funds to work in lucrative ways, whether using the money to make loans to companies at higher rates, or to speculate in the markets. Fixed-income trading — an area that includes bonds and currencies — has been particularly profitable
.

Here is why you do not have to suffer and can profit like the big banks.

Messages at this site have repeatedly shown that four ways to beat inflation are to invest in equities, real estate, your own business and commodities.

Commodities are riskiest in the deflationary times.

Equities have skyrocketed this year… as have bonds treated like equities.

US dollar denominated real estate also offers extra value now.  The dollar has fallen which reduces the price of real estate. This is why I am heavily invested in US and Ecuador property.

Ecuador & Intuitive Investing

Ecuador and intuitive investing were part of our last International Investment and Business Course of 2009 which we concluded yesterday.

Delegates enjoyed an afternoon lunch at our home Sunday afternoon, along with the autumnal sun and the views below.

ecuador-intuition

We told the story of how we began investing in Ecuador real estate and how Ecuador property and international investments can produce greater profit and safety when you combine hard work with your intellect and intuition.

ecuador-intuition

We looked at how hunches are often communication with knowledge beyond logic.  Intuition can make your investing luckier as well as more profitable.

When you take a global view, you gain greater scope for opportunity. Intuition expands your ability to find wise investments.  Yet you have more details to sift through.

During the course Thomas Fischer spoke about Jyske Bank stock and I shared a story of how Merri and I made a huge profit on this stock when we used intuition to buy shares in Jyske.

The graph below shows how Jyske Bank shares performed  from 2002 when Merri and I bought these shares.

We looked at the unusual part of this story which is how Merri and I used a hunch to buy Jyske shares at DKK 96.50 on 2nd September 2002 and sold a portion in April 2006 at DKK 352.50. Our profit was 265.28% in Danish kroner terms. But at the date of purchase the USD-DKK rate was 754 and dropped to 612 meaning that we gained another 18.8% in US dollars on the currency appreciation.

Even after the crash of 2008 our position in these shares is worth more than our original investment plus we have all the profit we took.

This is a great profit but the story of how we bought these shares is even better!

Here is what happened.  Merri and I were visiting the bank with a group of readers. We had been in Copenhagen for several days and took the group out to the bank’s headquarters in the small charming village of Silkeborg. We visited the CEO (who has been a friend for many years) in his new modest offices, saw the bank’s new currency trading room and visited with the Jyske Invest fund managers. We were all standing in the atrium of the headquarters when I suddenly had this hunch…a feeling is the strongest thing you could call it, to buy Jyske shares. I looked at Merri. She looked at me and I said, “Are you thinking what I am?”   She said “We should buy Jyske shares”.

I did not say another word but asked Thomas Fischer who was standing nearby if I could borrow his cell phone, called my Jyske account manager in Copenhagen and placed the order. That call has created enough profit for Merri and me to live on for many years.

Again and again Merri and I have had this “sudden moment” that has brought us a fortune or something truly wonderful in life. This unexpected look in each other’s eyes has led without further discussions to investment of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

We bought our hotel Meson de las Flores in Ecuador this same way, with less than 30 seconds of deliberation.

Ecuador-real-estate

I was upstairs looking at the hotel rooms.

Ecuador-real-estate

Merri was downstairs in the courtyard.

Ecuador-real-estate

I walked down.

Merri walked up.

We met on these stairs.

Ecuador-real-estate

Our eyes locked… and we knew.  “Buy this hotel.”

Then, I suggested that we not even look in the bedrooms, because we might change our mind!

We did and though we have never been involved in hotels before, we have enjoyed considerable success.

Yet the story of how we have come to rely on these spontaneous, good luck hunches is even more interesting.

I do not share this story often but am doing so now because I was reminded the importance of intuition when we discussed the Jyske shares at our course.

This story dates back to the early 80s.  Merri and I had met but did not know one another all that well. We were in Las Vegas with a mutual friend who had introduced us attending an investment conference where I was a speaker.

We were all sitting round chatting one evening when Merri suddenly said, “I think you would be good at psychometry.”

“Great”, I said. “What’s Psychometry?”

Psychometry it turned out is a form of communication using the sense of touch to get mental impressions linked to an object. She had a silver doubloon with her that had come from Mel Fisher’s Atocha treasure. I was game and said “Let’s try it”.

The idea is that psychometric impressions come in the form of emotions, sounds, scents, tastes or images. Because we live in an electromagnetic energy environment, metal objects often work best.

The term was coined in 1842 by Joseph R. Buchanan, an American physiologist, who claimed it could be used to measure the ‘soul’ of all things. Buchanan further said that the past is entombed in the present. He experimented with students at Cincinnati Medical School and found that some people who had been given unmarked bottles of medicine had the same reaction as if they had taken the medicine. He developed the theory that all things give off an emanation which contained a sort of record of the history of the object. He believed that objects recorded senses and emotions and these could be sensed in the mind.

I did not know this at the time but was game so held the coin and must say that as I went into a meditative state I did start having some visions. First I saw a brilliant blue..unusual for me as I never dream in color. The Atocha was carrying indigo I was later told but this did not really impress me much.

Then I saw a man, obviously Spanish in one of those puffy, white silk shirts with a women in a very unusual hairdo…”like peacock feathers,” I described. Then I saw a sword, very specific, a wine flask wrapped in filigree silver, a huge belt buckle on the man and ended up seeing flames, I said were “like sheaths of wheat”.

So that was that. I was not really impressed. Big deal…who was the guy, the gal? What’s all this weird stuff.

I was not impressed.

So we with a friend (who had faithfully sat through this) went to dinner, typical, Italian Las Vegas fare. After dinner our mutual friend suggested we stop by a show called Circus Circus. I had never been to a Vegas show so “Why not?” I said, “sounds like fun”.

As we entered “Circus-Circus” a new act was just beginning and the introducer came out. It was the woman I had described. Merri and our mutual friend had heard my description so they were impressed with the similarity.

I was stunned because this was not a similarity. This was the woman I had seen hours before in my dream.

She introduced the act, a juggler who came out, the Spanish guy in the silk short with the belt buckle! My knees were now wobbly.

The act included juggling the swords I had described and balancing the wine flask I had seen. In the end my friend said, “If I see the sheaths of flame I am convinced!” Sure enough the end of the finale included an assistant who was lighting huge Bunsen burners and jumping through the sheaths of flame as he juggled away.

Somehow, and I have never been able to explain this, holding that coin allowed me to see the future, not the past. I have never tried psychometry again nor do I intend to.

That evening changed my life because it showed me in terms I could not deny, nor will ever forget, that we are connected to knowledge and information that reaches way beyond our sense and logic.

That moment gave Merri and me confidence that hunches are more than wild imagination. They are a form of communication that go beyond what our brain can sort out in finite terms. That seed of belief was planted those many years ago and intuitive success upon success has caused it to grow.

As mentioned, we made a small fortune (for us at least) with the Jyske shares based on this hunch. We bought our hotel in Ecuador.

So the next time you need a miracle…don’t deny that one can happen… for good and for you… if you will allow it.

This does not mean you should stop using your logic.  Nor should you quit using due diligence.

Success increases when you learn to fuse the intellect and intuition, not abandon nor honor one over the other. They work best as a team!

Nor does it mean you should go out and risk all on a hunch. Start small….all things should start small and grow.

You possess connections to infinite knowledge. Your mind cannot grapple this because the act of defining defeats the very thing you are connected to.

However if you can let go and let your intuition lead you, you too may have some wonderful surprises and luck that after awhile will not be surprising at all!

Until next message, may all of your surprises and luck bring richness to you.

Gary

As international investors and real estate buyers, we are forced to deal with forces beyond our understanding and control. We must find simple ways to make decisions about complicated problems, knowing that many of the facts are unknown.   We have to deal with the future in terms of our past experience.

This is why I invited our friend Blaine Watson to repeat his popular course on Astrology and Beyond Logic.   Astrology presents a “what if” that pushes our thought process beyond past experience and encourages us to think in new ways to deal with future events.  This is a simple but powerful way to add an extra dimension into your process of thought.

Blaine Watson teaching his Beyond Logic course… always one of our most popular courses each year.

We have been able to organize one more Beyond Logic and Shamanic Course for December 2009. See details here.

Ecuador Organic & Green

Ecuador, organic & green ideas can create wealth in the new economic era.

I’l say more on Ecuador organic gardens in a moment.  First, let’s look at organic and green ideas north of Ecuador in the USA and elsewhere.

multi-currency-debt

A recent message mentioned that we have enhanced our strategic alliance with Jyske Bank by co hosting a international investing course with Jyske Global Asset Management (JGAM) at the Naples Beach Club.  The shot above was taken of the Naples Beach Club golf course.

Each day Merri and I strolled down the beach from the hotel to the Naples pier.

investing-green

During the day we talked with delegates attending the seminar.  My speeches looked at some great opportunities for investing in green ideas.

Herein lies the rub.

Golf courses… beaches surrounded by commerce… the opulence of Naples is about as far from green as can be… yet this is what attracts so many of the bucks!

This series shows how the big economic problems today create big, new opportunities.

The greatest asset we can have in the economic era ahead is an ability to serve… to produce a product or service that adapts to new ways of living as they unfold.

One of these new ways will be green.

Merri and I left Naples (our home for more than 20 years) because it had transformed from a sleepy fishing village into a glittering metropolis. This was not us.  The lifestyle there is complex now and hard to sustain.

Though our global travel for 41 years leaves us with a terrible carbon footprint and makes us look like jet setters, Merri and I are basically simple, recluse home bodies,  happier weeding our garden and watching our sunflowers sprout, than flying off to a grand metropolis.

I usually work here on the front porch…

Ecuador-green-investments

watching my grapes, raspberries, squash, tomatoes and…

ecuador-green

sunflowers that…

ecuador-green

by late summer will look like this.

Merri and I are such common people… so like, so many our age… that usually whatever we like, many millions of others like as well.  We count on this fact in our investing. We feel for what we like, knowing there is a market for that feeling.    This has paid us, over the years, well.

During the current economic transformation green may suffer… but in the end  humanity cannot ignore the problem of sustainability.  This means that green investments may offer special value now.

Here are excerpts from a recent Times special report entitled “It will Pay to Save the Planet”:

It’s no secret that U.S. workers are in trouble, with the unemployment rate at 8.9% and rising. At the same time, the world faces a long-term climate crisis. But what if there is a way to solve both problems with one policy? A number of environmentalists and economists believe that by implementing a comprehensive energy program, we can not only avert the worst consequences of climate change but also create millions of new jobs — green jobs — in the U.S. “We can allow climate change to wreak unnatural havoc, or we can create jobs preventing its worst effects,” President Barack Obama said recently. “We know the right choice.”  According to a report by the U.S. Conference of Mayors, there are already more than 750,000 green jobs in the U.S.

Environmental advocates say that with the right policies, those job figures could swell. The Mayors’ report predicts that for the next three decades, green employment could provide up to 10% of all job growth.

Because the environment creates a huge problem… there is also great opportunity in the thoughts behind this series.

Now imagine this… a guy sitting deep in the North Carolina woods reporting about Ecuador to tens of  thousands of people in a flash. We gave up our print publishing business and moved to places where we mostly walk rather than drive… built a super insulated natural house all to make our lifestyle and business greener.

You can do this too… if you wish or something of this sort… something that interests you.  There are so many green ideas and opportunities.

Many of these organic… green ideas are in Ecuador.

Here are a few ways suggested in previous messages that you can earn income that are greener than the norm.

Few ideas will totally reduce our carbon footprint.  Yet we can consume less when we work from home and deliver electronic rather than physical products.  When we void commuting we reduce travel, road wear and use less gas.  We pollute less.

I talked about green investing with these speakers at the Naples seminar.  Left to right: Samuel Rachlin,  Rich Checkan, Steve Blumenthal, Joe Cox, John Mauldin, Gary Scott, Lars Stouge. Thomas Fischer Moderating.

Our multi currency course has been tracking green portfolios for years. The green portfolio we have tracked for years include:

Vestas:  Danish Wind Turbine manufacturers.

Q Cells AG: German Solar Panel Makers.

Kurita Water: Japanese Water Purification Company.

Hyflux: Singapore Water Purification Firm.

NonoZymes: Danish Enzymes Manufacturer.

Seche Enviroment: French Environmental Porducts Firm.

I reviewed this green portfolio with my Jyske Global Asset Management adviser,  Anders Nielsen.  Here I am with  Anders at the Naples seminar.

He recently wrote that Jyske recommends some of the green shares in our green portfolios now and said:

Multi Currency Breakdown

See the multi currency breakdown of my portfolio below.

Yesterday’s message on multi currency bank safety mentioned that multi currency safety is as important as bank safety. Investors who do not have multi currency diversification can end up holding assets in a safe bank but with a worthless currency.

This is one reason why I have such a large percentage of my portfolio in real estate…carried at cost.  All of our real estate has been purchased at prices well below even the current market. We spend a lot of time researching and searching and fixing because I love working with buildings and land. This is the most important investing lesson of all…do what you love…with those you like.

Really…I would much rather play at making land like this worth more than fiddling with stock charts.

Multi-currency-love

I receive many emails like this:

In this current and, I believe, temporary ‘strengthening’ of the US dollar, I am looking for ways to preserve my assets. I have a lot of faith in the Australian $. The 2 obvious benefits in my mind are, no capital gains if/when the US$ weakens, plus I earn interest on the Australian dollar account. I am also looking to buy silver and I am looking at coins and bullion, any suggestions in this arena would also be appreciated. Thank you,

To invest in just one currency is speculation. Nothing wrong with that, if you know and accept the consequences of speculating incorrectly.

To me, real estate is so much more interesting…a puzzle to be worked filled with mystery that beckons like our hidden horse barn tucked away in the woods…just waiting for value to be added.

multi-currency-barn

Gold is nice also…in the leaves here during the leaf change or the yellow metal…a bit for insurance …but more is speculation as well. Property however almost always has utility…like our home.

Holding several currencies for multi currency diversification is better for most.

As it happens I have not felt good about Australia’s currency as you will see in my multi currency breakdown below.  In my opinion, too many investors are betting too much on t based as a commodity currency.

Here are three trends I have been aiming my multi currency diversification towards.

#1: A return to value. Value investing has long been our philosophy. No reason to change now but other investors have been chasing the easy, fast bucks in rapid appreciation. Look for a shift towards owning high yielding, solid boring shares and bonds.

#2: Real estate. The real problem investors face is not an economic meltdown. Inflation is the genuine risk because governments have proven that they will flood markets with liquidity to avoid the meltdown. Inflation means that cement will cost more. So too will steel and labor. This means a rise in labor. I salivate when this fundamental meets a global real estate correction and am buying so much real estate I scare myself.

#3: A shift to underlying currency value. Where does an investor go when the euro is no longer trusted and the dollar is fundamentally weak but suddenly flexing muscles it should not have? My guess (and here I am overweighted ) is investors will lean towards currencies of small, economically sane, solid, established, politically sound countries…such as Norway, Sweden and Denmark. If so, these currencies will rise versus the euro and dollar. If I am wrong, they are least likely to fall.

All of this brings us to the point of this lesson. If you travel and visit currency and forex trading rooms of large established, successful trading operations, you’ll note that there are very few, old traders. Young men and young women do this job because experienced investors know that currency trading, rather than diversification requires immense capital, continual diligence, almost unlimited discipline and the ability to absorb many small losses before making a big hit. Plus traders must have the emotional stability to not let the big lead them astray! This is an error that has allowed one trader to break many a bank and major firms’ backs…..Coutts…AIG are two examples.

Here is my currency breakdown:

US & Ecuador Real Estate 50.12%

Europe EUR 16.05%

Multi Currency Trends

We see multi currency trends everywhere when we look and think.

For example, I love a naturally healthy lifestyle and do not endorse the concept of using pharmaceuticals. Yet I do not let my personal beliefs blind me to the multi currency investing trends that I see developing.

This is why why several months ago, we looked at the idea of investing in shares of Novo Nordisk in an article entitled “Multi currency investing beats inflation.”

A much as I hate the fact, conditions suggest that we will see a trend away from healthy and organic eating. I believe this trend will shrink because a larger segment of the population will be hard pressed to pay for what they eat even if it is not the healthiest.

Food price will outweigh quality.

Sales of fast, cheap high carb, high fat food will rise…as will blood sugar problems and diabetes.

Novo Norsk is the largest maker of insulin so it makes sense that this company will do well.

Jyske Bank agrees and has given a buy signal on Novo Norsk shares.

Jyske recently set this memo to me.

Novo Nordisk (BUY): Capital-markets day confirms potential

On Friday 26 September, Novo Nordisk held its capital-markets day. The day did not bring any important news but it confirmed our assumptions that the market is underestimating the company”s growth potential within the diabetes business. We particularly have a more optimistic view of the launch of liraglutide compared with the market. Therefore, we maintain our BUY recommendation with a 12-month price target of DKK 380.”

Until next message, good global investing to you.
