Ecuador Banking Notes

Ecuador banking notes from Ecuador subscribers are below.

Ecuador-multi-currency-atm

This is the Ecuador bank and ATM we use in Cotacachi.

Before we look at these Ecuador banking  notes, you should be aware that non residents cannot open checking accounts at an Ecuador bank.  They can open a savings account.

Visa credit cards work at ATMs operated by Bank of Guayaquil, Pichincha, Produbanco and Banco Pacífico. Each ATM shows the logos of which cards can be used on that machine. We use our regular ATM cash card issued by our Florida bank at this Bank of Pichincha branch (shown above) on Cotacachi’s second smaller plaza.

The plaza is pristine because it is maintained by the bank.

Here are some Ecuador banking notes sent by subscribers.

You can add recent experience to your banking info that you can write a check on your US account and send it to an Ecuadorian bank for deposit. Normal mail takes about 5 days to Quito. BUT, you can’t make it payable to the bank with instructions to credit your account. Nope. You have to make it payable to yourself and then, get this, endorse the check. You cannot do, as you would in the US, add “Deposit Only to Acct 12345” — So, you are sending an endorsed check through the mail. This means it is just like cash. This is completely different from anything I have ever seen in the banking world.  Then it takes about a month for them to clear the check. Your alternative is to pay about $40 to wire the funds, and the Ecuadorian bank will charge to receive them. Or, you can get a cashier’s check and FedEx.

There are three Cotacachi ATMs. Two are on the main street 10th of August. Here is one of them…the newest of the three.

We are allowed to take $500 a day from the Pichincha ATM and $300 a day from the others.

Ecuador banking like in every country, has its peculiar glitches including with ATMs. Here is another sent by a reader.

Dear Gary,  I truly enjoy your posts! We have been lucky enough to find Cuenca to be our perfect Ecuadorian home but I did want to pass on a heads up based on your information today about banks in Ecuador…

When using ATM’s and cash cards in Ecuador, make sure you get your cash from a machine that is in, or at the front door of an open bank. As you receive your cash, check it for smooth feeling bills.

Last November we had the disappointing experience of getting 5 counterfeit $20 bills in our ATM withdrawal of $200. We were using an ATM at the “Parque Calderon” in the center of Cuenca, one of the most visited ATM by tourists in the city. Not imagining that there was any risk we pulled our $200 cash out and proceeded to Spanish class. It was there we were told five bills were fakes (all Ecuadorians who work with money are extremely aware of counterfeit bills as they have to cover the loses from their own pay) We were flabbergasted, especially when the woman at the school told us this had happened three times in the last month.

We called the card provider ( a Credit Union in Colorado) and they told us that as it was not in the US, there nothing they could do.

We went to the bank that owned and stocked the machine eight days in a row (each day we were told the person to see would be in the next day) trying to talk to someone who could/would do anything. It was not until we started using the word “Falsos” rather loudly in front of the crowd in the waiting line (usually about 50 people in Ecuador) that we were finally sent to a manager. The manager set us up with another manager who did not show up for our meeting either, and then another who blamed it all on the main office in Guayaquil. Finally we just marched in and went straight to the top, the bank director who kindly spent an hour showing us that the problem could not have ever happened and that the fakes must have been put in when the bills were packaged in Kansas City by the US Federal Reserve.

Knowing that a $100 loss would be devastating to a typical Ecuadorian family where teachers and policemen make $150 a month, we decided to bring charges against the bank, if only to catch their attention.

Needless to say the case is making its way agonizingly slowly through the Ecuadorian Justice system and we don’t ever expect to see our money back, but we can warn others.

-Avoid cash machines not attached to banks.

-Pull your cash out in a very visible place, preferably with the bank guard watching.

-Rub the bills between your thumb and fingers to feel for a different texture (fake bills are smooth like copy paper).

-If you think you feel any difference, immediately take it to the guard or teller and demand new bills.

Ecuador is an amazing place but even and especially the locals trust the banks and bankers about as far as they can throw them. As you say once bitten twice shy.

Here is Cotacachi’s third ATM.

Jyske ATM Banking in Ecuador

One nifty way to combine global investment management bank and your cash needs in Ecuador is through Copenhagan with Jyske Bank’s VISA debit cards.

This card makes it easy to access cash from your Danish bank account.

Why a Danish bank?  As mentioned earlier I do not trust Ecuador banks. On the other hand Danish banks are among the safest in the world.

First let’s examine safety.  How safe?

In recent years Denmark has been rated by Standard & Poor’s as one of the safest country in the world in which to bank.

Jyske Bank is well established with a history of over 100 years. Jyske is Denmark ’s second largest bank, with 450,000 clients in Denmark and over 30,000 abroad.

Jyske Bank has over 23 billion euros in assets and also happens to be one of the leading currency traders in the world. Many other large banks use Jyske to handle their off hour currency positions. This means that Jyske is huge when it comes to multi currency activity. In fact their turnover reaches $50 billion dollars a day.

Bank Safety Point #1: A recent Yahoo Canada article shows a survey by the World Economic Forum listed five safest countries in which to bank.

Canada
Sweden
Luxembourg
Australia
Denmark

So Denmark is a safe place to bank. Now let’s look at Jyske Bank’s safety rating.

Bank Safety Point #2: On October 10 2008, Moody’s affirmed Jyske Bank’s long-term Aa2 rating. This decision came despite the deteriorated economic prospects in Denmark, particularly in respect of the property market.

Bank Safety Point #3: Also on Friday 10 October 2008, the Danish Parliament passed a bill that secured all deposits and unsecured claims against losses in Danish financial institutions. The rating of the Kingdom of Denmark is Aaa/AAA with Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s respectively.

The people at Jyske are common sense bankers. They had minimal sub prime exposure when that scandal broke. Jyske had zero Madoff exposure.

That’s safe!

How about service?  First of all,  Jyske can manage your wealth. For anyone with $50,000 or more to invest Jyske can buy, sell and hold investments from all over the world, stocks, liquid assets, bonds and commodities. They provide full managed or advisory only services.  They even lend in multiple currencies to leverage investments for investors with $100,000 or more.   Almost no bank in North or Latin America can do this.

Once you have Jyske caring for your wealth, they can then provide a steady stream of cash when you need it…via a global debit card.

Jyske Ecuador & Global Service.

Even US clients who have managed accounts at Jyske Global Asset Management  (JGAM) can have a VISA debit card.

JGAM opens a specific on demand account with Jyske Bank so funds can be made available via the card.

These cards can provide access to cash anywhere in the world…including Ecuador.

Jyske offers three different cards to match different needs.   Each type of card provides considerable flexibility.

US citizens and residents can get more information from Thomas Fischer at Jyske Global Asset Management. Email: fischer@jgam.com

None US should contact Jyske Bank Rene Mathys  at mathys@jbpb.dk

This is good advice for when you are banking in Ecuador that we are happy to share.

How to Make Money in the Multi Currency Era

The US and Ecuador property market offers a rare opportunity to make money in this multi currency era. Here is an excerpt from a recent multi currency update.

Two economic forces have come together to create extra special profits.

I know because the same  combination occurred in London during the late 1970s and allowed me to increase an investment eleven times in two years by buying property then.

Earlier in 1970 I had lived in London, England for a year, then moved to Hong Kong. During that time I also maintained a home outside of San Francisco, California.

This was a time of great inflation. My homes in California and in Hong Kong appreciated greatly. In the mid 1970s, when I moved from Hong Kong back to London, I noticed that London real estate was priced about the same as it had been in 1970. This puzzled me. Why had London property prices remained flat despite inflation?

On investigation, I learned that there had been a huge real estate crash in 1970 which continued to dampen real estate prices six years later despite the rampant global inflation. I felt this was a great distortion as European property prices had risen, but London prices had not. Yet London offered the best utility as the center of the English speaking world. This, to my way of thinking, created a huge distortion.

It’s late 1976. Britain faced  a sterling crisis. In less than two years the pound has fallen from $2.40 to $1.60. Investors had no faith in the British economy, or the government that ran it. The government’s budget was a mess.  Investors  were ditching the pound.

The plummeting pound pushed the economy to breaking point. Prime Minister Callaghan, in desperation borrowed as much as possible, £2.3 billion from the IMF.

At that time, the British pound collapsed to its lowest level ever (a pound per dollar for a short time) so the distortion widened. This meant in US dollar terms London property had dropped almost 50% while property in other major cities of the western world had increased in price by three or four times.

london-house

The house I bought was right next door and very similar to this house in Bedford Park, London W4.

This house in West London was 34,000 pounds, 9,000 pounds down (then $9,000).   I took a mortgage for 25,000 pounds ($25,000).  I lived in the house and three years later the pound had recovered to 2.2 dollars per pound plus London real estate had caught up with property in other major western centers. I sold the house for 115,000 pounds or $253,000 a profit of $244,000 on a $9,000 investment.

Now it’s the US dollar that is very low.

You will have seen articles something like the the September 7, 2009 Bloomberg article “Weak Dollar? Currency, at 10-Year Low, May Fall More” by Bo Nielsen.

An excerpt says: Anyone who says the dollar is weak after it fetched a record-low $1.3681 against the euro and the fewest pence against the pound in 25 years is expressing a euphemism.

The currency may decline at least another 10 percent by the end of 2008, say Jay Bryson, an economist at Wachovia Corp., and Kenneth Rogoff, the former chief economist at the International Monetary Fund. The dollar has only fallen 3.4 percent in the past two years to a 10-year low, according to a Federal Reserve index that weighs trade with 38 countries including China, Mexico, Canada and countries in Europe. It tumbled 30 percent in the three years ended 1988.

“Dollar weakness will be broad-based and could last for years,” said Bryson, a global economist at Charlotte, North Carolina-based Wachovia who previously analyzed currencies at the Federal Reserve.

Investors are dumping dollars, lured by higher returns elsewhere. The U.S. will grow more slowly than Europe for the first time since 2001 and Japan for the first time in 16 years, the IMF forecasts. The difference in yield between 10-year German bonds and Treasuries has shrunk to the smallest since 2004.

Those who read this site regularly or subscribe to our multi currency course know that I reported my personal portfolio and recommended getting out of the US dollar in February 2009. See that recommendation here.

I showed that my portfolio was 86% out of the greenback.

My liquid portfolio currency allocation was reported as Brazilian real  4%,
 Denmark kroner  33%
,  euro 31%
, British pound 10%
, Turkey lira 8%
, US$ 14%.

I also mentioned in February that I was going to start buying Florida real estate.

So Merri and I began looking and in our research found that there appears to be a hole in the market for Central Florida property selling in the million to $750,000 range.  There seems to be no buyers at all. We have been watching prices tumble hundreds of thousands.

We are viewing one property next week that started at $800K+. It just dropped $100,000 last week from $395,000 and is now down to $295,000.

This is about a 25% drop in that house’s price in six months. That’s pretty good!

Now look at what this means in depreciated dollar terms.

dollar-chart

Here is a chart of the euro to US dollar from yahoo.finance.com from February 2009 to September 10, 2009 when this was written.

In February a US dollar bought .80 euro so that house at $395,ooo cost 319,200 euro.  Now a US dollar buys about .68 euro so this house at $295,000 costs about 200,000 euro.

That is a drop in that house price of 37% in six months in terms of euro. That’s even better!

Here is the magic in this hidden, built-in profit.  For most of the market, the profit is hidden.  Most investors are not comparing currencies and real estate prices.  Yet these distortions will filter through. Eventually European investors…. or those like me who are holding currencies other than dollars will see this distortion and cash in.

I, and now you, just have an advantage because we are always looking at both markets… currency and real estate.

Ecuador Real Estate Cheaper as Well

This also creates better value on Ecuador real estate. Take for example one penthouse property I am selling at $139,000.

This is a perfect property for those who want peace… quiet…and instant access to miles of empty, warm Pacific beach.

Ecuador beach rentals

This unit would have cost 111,000 euro in February. Now the price has dropped to 94,500 euro… just from the dollar’s fall.

The US and Ecuador property markets offers a rare opportunity to make extra profit now because of hidden added value from the US dollar’s fall. History suggests that real estate is a real asset so its price rises as the currency its counted in falls.

These corrections take time because most property owners do not calculate their property in multi currency terms.  Those of us who watch this can gain extra profit now.

Frequency and Health

Frequency and health are connected.

One way of looking at everything is as a collage of frequencies.

Good health is the body operating as a bundle of correct, natural frequencies.

A recent message for example looked at how the frequency of music can integrate the brain hemispheres and accelerate super thinking.

The process is also good for health.  That same article for example showed how healers globally use the frequency emitted from the conch shell because the form of these shells represent the Golden Mean.

In mathematics and the arts, the golden mean is the ratio of expansion in nature when all frequencies are in harmony. This mathematical constant is about 1.618033.

In other words each ring of a conch shell (that has grown in harmony) is about 1.6 larger than the last.

Non stressed flowers unfold on the Golden Mean.

Adolf Zeising, a mathematician and philosopher, found the Golden Mean expressed in the arrangement of branches along the stems of plants and of veins in leaves. Animal skeletons, the branches of veins and nerves expand on the Golden Mean.  The Golden Mean rules the proportions of chemical compounds and the geometry of crystals.   The Golden Mean is a universal law as Zeising wrote, “the ground-principle of all formative striving for beauty and completeness in the realms of both nature and art, and which permeates, as a paramount spiritual ideal, all structures, forms and proportions, whether cosmic or individual, organic or inorganic, acoustic or optical; which finds its fullest realization, however, in the human form.”

So hearing the Golden Mean in music or sound helps balance our being.

We built our North Carolina farmhouse on the Golden Mean… a rectangle 1 wide by 1.6 long.

golden-mean

We can gain balancing frequencies in other ways such as through nutrition.

Ecuador-shamans

Ecuador shamans use conch shells, tobacco smoke, floral water, herbs, chants, music and dance to balance frequencies.

For example Theanine (chemical name: r-glutamylethylamide), one of the chemicals found in green tea, helps balance the system. Theanine is used to reduce stress and anxiety without the tranquilizing effects found in many other calming agents.

Scientific evidence shows that Theanine stimulates the brain’s production of alpha waves, making the user feel relaxed but alert and not drowsy. It also helps the body produce other calming amino acids, such as dopamine, GABA, and tryptophan. As might be expected from a calming supplement, Theanine may be able to lower elevated blood pressure as well.

This is why I was excited to receive the note below from my friend, health care provider and fellow trustee on our foundation Landofthesun.org, Joe Spano, MD.

Here are Merri and me with Dr. Joe Spano (left) and Dr. Jim Key both board certified in anti aging at a shamanic ceremony on the ancient Inca Rumicucho pyramids.

When Joe gives me a health idea, I listen. His resume shows why:

Joe attended Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans from 1959 – 1963. His internship was done at Mixed Medical and Surgery; Kings County hospital center, Brooklyn, New York. His Medical Residency was at Veterans Administration Hospital and Tulane University School of Medicine, New Orleans. He had special training at Resident in Clinical Cardiology under John H. Phillips M.D., Chief of Cardiology, Veterans Administration Hospital, New Orleans.

Joe was an instructor in Physical Diagnosis at Tulane University School of Medicine. He was a Research Fellow in Medicine for gastroenterology at Harvard University, Thorndike Memorial Laboratory, Boston City Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts. He served in the Military from 1967 to 1969 in the USAF, 3560th USAF Hospital, Webb AFB, Texas; Chief of Internal Medicine; Chief of Professional Services; Chief of Laboratory Services; Chief of Radiology.

Joe has honors, membership and diplomat to American Board of Internal Medicine, Harvard Trained Gastroenterologist, American Board of Anti-Aging Medicine, Phi Beta Pi Medical Fraternity. He is listed in ”Best Doctors in America“, America’s Top Physicians (Research Council of America) and was chief of staff at Naples Community Hospital.

Joe sent this note:  Gary I have taken the liberty of sending you a few bottles of green tea, pomegranate and blueberry extracts that the business I am involved with provides. Try them and see what you think.

Thera-green Tea contains only pure, wild crafted, Chinese Green Tea and herbs.
Thera-Green Tea contains natural antioxidants derived from Green Tea, Lotus Leaf, and Kudzu Root.

Thera-green Tea helps fight free-radicals. It is an excellent addition to a weight loss program… provides immune support… nourishes cardiovascular health and
promotes healthy collagen production.

Blueberries  have one of the highest anti-oxidant ratings of all the  berries. Although the acai berry, the mangosteen  berry, and the gogi berry all are enjoying a  lot of  publicity, the blueberry is a superb  source of the chemicals such as quercetin, vitamin c, resveratrol, and anthocyanidins that neutralize free radicals which wreak havoc on cell membranes and dna making it equal if not superior in efficacy.

Extracts of blueberries enhance brain function and reduce brain aging  according to recent research, along with bilberry (a component of thera-blueberry)  improve night vision and may slow macular degeneration.  Eye strain is decreased as well.

Thera-BlueBerry contains the pure, raw pulp of whole wild Blueberries, plus
extracts of Pomegranates, Bilberries, and Elderberries.

One dropper is equivalent to 10 cups of the blueberry juice. It requires this much to get the various health benefits that have been ascribed to blueberries.

The convenience is a major advantage, I add the extracts to my water, oatmeal, and cereals.

One still has the benefit of the super food berries, even in the off season.

This is not to indicate that fresh berries are not better and that in Ecuador those fresh juices aren’t more delicious and nutritious.

Thera-Pomegranat contains all natural extracts of real whole Pomegranate fruit.  This ancient fruit has modern health benefits. Originating from Persia and mentioned in the Old Testament, pomegranate has been found to  have many positive effects on health. synergistically blended with Green Tea and Elderberry extracts.

Daily consumption of this fruit juice or its extracts seems to decrease progression of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries).

Also, it may improve circulation to the heart under stress.  The polyphenol content, notably the anthocyanidins (gives it the color) has been shown  to reduce the progression of prostate cancer.

Because it enhances nitrous oxide production in the body the juice has been helpful in some men with erectile dysfunction. Concentrated pomegranate juice may be useful in lowering ldl (bad) cholesterol and reducing blood pressure.

Like cranberry juice its chemical components inhibits the ability of bacteria  to adhere to the urinary bladder wall and cause infection.

The fresh fruit is not available year round and the juice in supermarkets is expensive.

Therefore, the concentrated juice extract available as thera-pomegranate  from preferred medical supplements is a convenient was of getting your daily health requirement.

One or two droppers is all that is needed daily.  Regards, Joe

I am not selling these supplements but use these green tea and fruit extracts as  part of  my anti-aging strategy.

Joe has been kind to extended  a 10% discount to readers GaryaScott.com and ecuadorliving.com.

Ecuador Spanish

Our Ecuador Spanish course offers a secret that can help keep up  in a fast changing world.

See thirteen important demographic facts below that apply to everyone who has an interest in business and investing.  These facts also reinforce the importance of Spanish as a second language.

Most of the western world is multi lingual… except North America.

Ideally everyone that moved to North America would learn English…. just as North Americans moving to  South America should learn Spanish.

This does not happen in the real world.  Canadians do better if they have some French and Americans… Spanish.

ecuador-seminars

Enjoy the beauty of Ecuador as you learn.

Whether we like it or not… knowing some Spanish makes us more competitive in our day to day multi lingual world. Technology and the earth’s growing population makes the global economy of increasing importance to mankind’s evolution.   This will increase, not decrease the clash of  languages.

Spanish is the second most spoken language and its importance is growing in the USA.

Here are 13 of 23 facts presented by the Spanish Translation Service that shows why we dare not be a one language person in a multi lingual world.

1.   According to the 2000 Census, for the first time, non-Hispanic whites are the minority population in the 100 largest U.S. cities.

2.    The US Census Bureau predicts that ethnic minorities, encompassing African Americans, Hispanics, and Asian Americans, will represent more than half of the US population by 2040.

3.    Latinos (35 million strong) have increased their presence in the U.S. population by 58% over the last 10 years, and recently surpassed African Americans as the largest ethnic minority (2000 U.S. Census,).  While non-white Hispanic population grew by 3%.

4.    Hispanics are the fastest growing minority group in the U.S. and are projected to contribute two-thirds to the growth in the size of the high-school-age population over the next decade (U.S. Dept. of Education).

5.    In 2000, one of every five new entrants into the workforce was Hispanic (Census).

Enjoy great food during meals and coffee breaks like this fresh mango and raspberry juice.

6.    In California, the Hispanic/Latino minority population has now become the majority (huge language implications).

7.    Gregory Spencer of the Census Bureau was quoted in newspapers citing changes in the workplace and marketplace and said “if you want to sell things and go where the growth is, about half of your market will be people in their 50’s, and the other half will be the Hispanic and Asian populations.”  According to the Census in 1996 Latinos and Asians will represent more than half of the U.S. population growth every year for the next 50 years.  Source:  Census Bureau, 1996.

8.    The Latino population alone is now 35 million strong in the U.S. with over $45 billion in buying power (2000 Howell).

9.    By 2050, the Census Bureau projects, Hispanics will be about a quarter of the U.S. population and blacks less than a sixth.

Our Spanish course is conducted at the Cotacachi Museum which is…

10.    Hispanic American purchasing power is growing at two times the rate of general public.

11.    Latinos grew at four times the rate as the national population between 2000 and 2002, according to information released this week by the U.S. Census Bureau (2003 DiversityInc.com).

12.    “The official population estimates now indicate that the Hispanic community is the nation’s largest minority community,” said Census Bureau Director Louis Kincannon in a statement (2003 DiversityInc.com).

We travel to markets each day and on our real estate tours by luxury coach.

13.    While the U.S. population as a whole is getting older because of the aging Baby-Boomer population, the Latino population is getting younger. More than one-in-three (34.4 percent) of the Latino population in the United States is under the age of 18. This ranges from 37.1 percent of Mexican Americans below the age of 18 to 19.6 percent for Cuban Americans below that age.

Spanish is the second most important language in the world. Yet our educational system did not teach us how to communicate with or understand this culture. Learning Spanish is valuable, important and can be fun!

You can attend our last 2009 Super Thinking + Spanish course (that helps you learn Spanish in less than a week)  this September 17 to 22, 2009. (Arrive Quito Sept. 16. Depart Sept.  22 or 23, 2009).

Even better we have created a special program so you can also attend our September real estate tours, that take place right after the Spanish course, (September 23 – 24 Ibarra real estate tour and  September 25-28 Ecuador coastal real estate tour) at a substantial discount.

Global Investing and Ecuador

My global investing and business began 41 years ago May 2, 1968 and eventually led me to Ecuador.

My background as son of a zoo keeper did not leave me prepared.

ecuador-global-investing

Here is a newspaper clipping of my sister Sandra and me feeding a baby lion we kept at home… one of many lions and tigers we raised.

Let me share 41 years of multi currency investing and a couple of important facts I learned that may help you… including what’s happening with the swine flu in Ecuador.

I arrived in Hong Kong in the night, the tropical air so soft it was a velvet mist.   Thick evening scents in the fragrant harbor and mellow insects purrings in rhythm with the cacophony of the great city!  What a an exotic adventure.

Kai Tak was Hong Kong’s airport then and being American born and bred, I knew nothing about investing aboard.

That was my first airplane trip, first time out of Oregon. Portland to Vancouver, Tokyo to Hong Kong.  I melted in my heavy woolen blazer, was weary and afraid but excited too. An incredible global investing journey had begun… and continues to this day.

Here I was, 21 years old.

passport_25_07_2007_4.jpg

Here is the first stamp in that first passport. That stamp you might say was my first international investment.

passport2_25_07_2007_3.jpg

That first stamp makes a point by the way about how to enter and initially work or invest in a country.  That first stamp was issued May 2, 1968 and allowed me to stay in Hong Kong until June 2, 1968.

I worked in Hong Kong for quite some time on tourist stamps… coming in for a month at a time.   I was developing sales teams in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, Indonesia, Singapore and the Philippines at the same time so a month was plenty of time before I exited.

ecuador-global-investing

Here is one of my first sales teams… this one in Hong Kong led by John So Kwok Kee (far left – you can guess which one I am).

I built teams from the north in Japan down through Thailand.  One of the salesmen we worked with in Thailand, Brian Tracy, returned later to Canada and has had great success in the sales education field.

Starting a business, investigation or residence with a tourist visa is a pretty good idea. This is usually the easiest, most efficient, practical way to begin so you can be sure what you are doing and how you’ll develop a more permanent stay if you want one.  In many cases… such as mine… a permanent tourist system is simply the easiest and best.

I began my business in Hong Kong this way and for years I also lived and worked in England on tourist stamps before obtaining my permanent residence there.

A reader recently sent me this note about Ecuador tourist visas.

“Gary, When I was staying at the Hotel, someone mentioned that you do not
have a residential visa for Ecuador.  Is this correct?  How do you
spend as much time in the country as you do?”

Here is my rely:

“I spend less than 6 months a year in Ecuador.

“We have heard from others who come stay for 90 days, leave for just a day or two (especially just over the border in Peru or Colombia)  and come right back that there are difficulties.

“Our experience is that every time we come to Ecuador we are given a 90
day visa.  However we do not stress this system. For example we may stay 70 days and then be away for weeks or even a month or so.  Then return for 20 days or so.. then leave for another month etc.   The immigration officers look carefully at the total number of days by the end of the year and to help them, I keep a list of each day we have arrived and departed and the page number in our passport… so they can efficiently see we have not been in more than 180 days the maximum allowed on a T-3 tourist visa).

Be careful not to overstay. One reader reported that having done so he was denied entrance upon his return and were not allowed to return to Ecuador for one year.

We have a full report on Ecuador visas and an immigration attorney who helps our Ecuador Living subscribers.

I am also preparing a report for Ecuador Living subscribers to answer this question from a reader yesterday.

“Hi Gary, Wonderful timing, we had tickets to fly from Guadalajara to Quito yesterday, but were stymied by the fact that Ecuador (and Peru) are refusing passengers from Mexico.  We understand Ecuador’s borders  will be closed for a month to non-residents flying in from Mexico.

We had thought about flying back to the States and then flying to Ecuador, but an electronic scan of our passports would show we’d been in Mexico and we’re not sure what would happen.  Any insights?   Thanks!

Back to Hong Kong.  I began there selling US mutual funds.

When arriving there 41 years ago there is no way I could have known how exciting the next decades would be, how much information, facts, figures, ideas and insights on how to invest globally would be gained. Had I known the mistakes to be made I would probably have run!

Then I moved east again to England and Europe… trying many things.

Thankfully all the trials, tortures and errors were mitigated by much fun and an earnest endeavor to live right and learn.

ecuador-global-investing

Here is a newspaper clipping of me  with a business partner in my London office on Artillery Row selling square inches of Graceland… not really a very good idea.

Later I imported Rolls Royces and Bentleys from England to the US… a better idea.

ecuador-global-investing

One goal at this site is to share basics of global investing and living an international life learned over these 41 years. Global investing has changed so much during this time and is changing even faster now.  I am continually forced to rearrange my thinking strategy and tactics at a faster pace.

We offered health courses at our North Carolina farm. Here I am with our son, Jake, with one tactic we taught… a morning dip in a cold creek after exercise… yes that is snow on the banks and no… this not surprisingly did not sell very well either.

ecuador-global-investing

Our food as medicine courses taught by Merri in her teaching kitchen at the farm had better attendance!

ecuador-global-investing

For almost 15 years now we have been conducting courses in Ecuador. Here I am this year in the meeting room at the Cotacachi museum next to Meson de las Flores on an Ecuador export tour.

ecuador-global-investing

This continual evolution has helped Merri and me, our readers and our income continually grow… through good times and bad.

Yesterday April 2009 for example ended with anoter record month for our internet sales.  Our 2009 sales (April month on month) were up 48.01% over April 2008, which in turn were up 24.04% over April 2007 sales.

Our sales in the first four months of 2009 were up 81.75% over Jan through April 2008 which was up 26.20% over 2007.  Learn how to develop an internet business that can grow like this here.

The reason we have survived and progressed amidst this never ending update is that the little stuff shifts and evolves, but the fundamentals remain immutable.

Investing globally is not a panacea, but expanded horizons are. Life is a trip and we have an entire globe to enjoy the ride.

Two years ago on May 2, 2007, I wrote:

History suggests that this is a time when chances are increased for panic and sudden drops in investment markets. Investors who have proven themselves nervous short term thinkers are highly leveraged, in thin, over purchased markets that are easily sinkable boats treading the dangerous waters of May though October when tradition says the currents will most likely be treacherous and surrounded with lots of storms.

Now, that this risk has proven true, history also suggests that we have a once in a life time opportunity.

The way to cash in on this incredible opportunity is the same way I suggested avoiding the collapse two years ago. I wrote then: “One way to get good international investments is to take a long term, expansive international view.”

My first trip abroad 41 years ago was significant because 1968 was the beginning of a new era for world stock markets. When I arrived in Hong Kong the world of investing was dominated by Wall Street. That was about to end. 1968 was the year when the Hong Kong Stock Market began to explode upwards along with Tokyo’s market. What a ride!

The Heng Seng Index was then 100 and rose to 18,000. Anyone who steadily committed money to this market then made a fortune.

I can sum up my investment basic investing and advice in seven sentences.

#1: 1970s. Invest in real estate, gold, silver Japan, Germany, Switzerland and Hong Kong.

#2: 1980s. Invest in real estate, the Tigers, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore Malaysia and South Korea as well.

#3: 1990s. Invest in real estate South America (which led me to Ecuador).

#4: 2000s. Invest real estate, China, India and emerging markets including Ecuador real estate.

#5: Always have an expansive view.

#6: Use stop losses during peaks.

#7: Have an international investment view. Never overextend. Don’t trade too much, just hang on.

This philosophy has reaped millions for Merri and me. Had we been more expansive, we would have an extra $20 million or so.  However our conservative approach to business and investing also protected us during the recent melt down of 2007 and 2008.

This may be time to begin taking advantage of the recovery. Panic is subsiding but values are still high. The huge excesses of the US and other government’s will at some stage begin to seriously erode the purchasing power of currencies.

I remain highly diversified from a currency point of view.  Here is my current currency breakdown in my liquid portfolio that represents 43% of my total portfolio.

An excerpt from a recent Multicurrencyinvesting.com lesson explains why when I wrote about the currency distribution of investments:

Here is my currency distribution:

Danish kroner    24%
Euro                     24%
British Pound      8%
US Dollar            12%
Canadian Dollar 3%
Norway kroner   4%
NZ Dollar             3%
Sweden kroner    7%
Brazil real             3%
Hungary Forint   6%
Turkey Try            6%

With more than a third of my liquid position in Danish, Swedish and Norwegian kroner, my Scandinavian  position is seriously over weighted in terms of global market size.

One reason is because these are such small countries located on the sea.  This means that their histories are composed of  travel and trade.

A nation’s heritage reflects in the value of its currency strength. This fact helped me answer this question from a reader.

“Gary, Will  future strength in DKK be bad for equities denominated in that currency?”

Here is my reply.

Most of the Danish companies you would buy are global companies.

Because Denmark is such a small market any large Danish company is doing most of its business out of Denmark  so a lot of their success depends on the type of business business and where the company actually manufactures and sells its products.

Plus look at the margins built into the product.

One benefit in Scandinavia is their very highly educated population. A recent Time magazine article shows that Finland (not Scandinavian but Baltic and Finland’s currency is the euro – otherwise I would have Finmark in my portfolio as well) ranked number one for educational performance of 15 year olds in math. Denmark was number 10, Sweden number 15 and Norway number 23… all ahead of the US (number 25).

Finland was number one for reading performance of 15 years olds as well.  Sweden number seven, Norway number 10 and Denmark number 16. The US was number 15.

This means that the products produced in these nations will tend to be high value.

For example, Novo Norsk makes insulin.  I suspect that the margins are substantially high.

Ditto for novozymes that makes enztymes for environmental purification.  These are firms where there is likely to be a great deal of value added into their product.

Vestas, makes wind turbines. and may be more affected by a strong kroner if they do a lot of manufacturing in Denmark but are having and sales in the US and especially if their competitors manufacture in the US or other countries where the currency is weak.

I am updating the value of major and emerging markets now at multicurrencyinvesting.com and will be revaluing our green and Danish portfolios in upcoming lessons.  You can subscribe to our Multi Currency Portfolios Course here.

I have increased my Ecuador real estate to 22% of my total property.  The balance is in US property and I am looking to add more US property now in Florida and or Savannah.

If you have real estate in central Florida or Savannah that you would like to swap for real estate in Ecuador… let me know.

I have held a high cash position for over a year but now agree with Warren Buffet who recently wrote about business and opportunity:

Clinging to cash equivalents or long-term government bonds at present yields is almost certainly a terrible policy if continued for long. Holders of these instruments, of course, have felt increasingly comfortable – in fact, almost smug – in following this policy as financial turmoil has mounted. They regard their judgment confirmed when they hear commentators proclaim “cash is king,” even though that wonderful cash is earning close to nothing and will surely find its purchasing power eroded over time.

Now is the time to convert cash into investments that will appreciate with the loss of cash’s loss of purchasing power… stocks… commodities… real estate or your own business.

This leaves all of us with a lot to do after 41 years of a global life.

I feel healthier and more energetic then 41 years ago.   Maybe I am not wiser… but I am more experienced and seem in a better position then when I took that first trip.

Merri and I look forward to the next 41 years… and we look forward to sharing them with you!

Ecuador Tours & Courses – After the Fall

Here is an explanation of our investing, business and  Ecuador courses and tours for 2009.

Ecuador-tours

Ecuador real estate tour inspecting $30,000 coastal condos.

A recent message looked at how spring seems to explode upon us… how some types of change seem to happen in a very short time.. the buds appear… the dandelions suddenly open, etc.  This season roars in like a lion… as does other types of change.

Ecuador-tours

Ecuador real estate tour enjoying lunch on the beach.

Destructive change can also evolve in a sudden way.  One day the gates of Rome were sacrosanct.  The next day the barbarians were there… inside the gates.

The Soviet Union seemed to disintegrate quickly . It did not slowly decay.

So our courses and tours are based on seven foundations of  prosperity in change.

These five focal reflections are supported by seven foundations of prosperity in change.

Here are the seven fundamental elements we look for in every business… investment and health idea we review.

#1: Is it good value?

#2: Does it provide diversification?

#3: Does it offer a service to the global community?

#4:  Is it healthy?

#5: Is it relevant to one’s individual circumstance?

#6: Is it practical and achievable?

#7: Is it part of one’s destiny?

Cotacachi Street Map

You can use this Cotacachi street map to find our hotel Meson de las Flores.

Learn more about Meson here.

The red lines are local bus routes, though they are about to change as a new bus road is added.

Many of the streets are named after famous Ecuadorians from Ecuador’s history such as Antonio Jose de Sucre or Pedro Moncayo.

Many streets are named famous dates such as 10 de Agosto (10th of August). August 10, 1809 was the date for a revolution in Quito.

Looking at the Cotacachi Street map below the main square is where the symbol of the uppermost church lays; between Bolivar and Moncayo and Sucre and Peñaherrera. Meson de las Flores is just one short block away, or 67 steps, on the corner of Sucre and Moreno.

A recent message looked at how spring seems to explode upon us… how some types of change seem to happen in a very short time.. the buds appear… the dandelions suddenly open etc.  This season roars in like a lion… as does other types of change.

Cotacachi Sidewalks

Cotacachi sidewalks tell a tale about this town.

cotacachi-sidewalks

When a town is in trouble its sidewalks crumble.   Cotacachi sidewalks in reverse are getting better… much better… each and every day

This is a sign.    The book, “Tipping Point”, by Malcolm Gladwell looks at how simple signs like this can help us predict markets and can show us that there is opportunity in Cotacachi.

One of the points in Gladwell’s  book is that it is little things that causes a social-economic events to tip.  For example the book explains the “Broken Window Theory ” that says that if a window is broken and left un repaired, people walking by will conclude that no one cares and no one is in charge. Soon more windows will be broken and the sense of anarchy will spread from the building on the street on which it faces, sending a signal that anything goes. In short crime is contagious. As are bull and bear markets, stock values, etc.

The police in New York used this theory in reverse. By aggressively attacking simple crimes such as vandalism and putting graffiti on trains, and subway fare-beating, major crime fell dramatically. The point is epidemics can be started or stopped by tinkering with the smallest details of the environment. Throw two or three small changes into any environment, be it economic, social or biological and you move towards a tipping point… good or bad.

We can use this knowledge to spot small things now that will make big differences in economics later… like Cotacachi sidewalks that are getting better all around the town.

We can see that these sidewalks are a harbor of safety for small children early morn or at night.

cotacachi-sidewalks

We see that they are clean… and cleaned every day.

The towns vision stated at www.cotacachi.gov.ec is to transform Cotacachi into a Canton Model characterized by the democratic and active participation of the different organized social sectors, whose planned work and intelligence allow to set the bases to reach the social, economic, cultural, and environmental development, consolidating the feelings of the “cotacacheñidad” and their identity of a multiethnic and pluricultural town.

The sites says: We want to share with all the citizens of Ecuador, multiethnical, and pluricultural world our important experience of participative democracy. The same one that the mestizo, black, and indigenous towns of the Cotacachi canton are building. Since August 10, 1996, it has marked in the country a great difference between the representative democracy and the participative democracy.

The road traveled in the organizational, legal, and political environment has allowed us to advance in the social, cultural, economic and environmental aspect. We have advanced significantly in the human and spiritual environment.
We are facing with responsibility and future vision the problems historically manipulated by the traditional politicians. This process has the recognition of the cotacacheans and the national and international community.

The ideas, dreams, proposals, and projects unite us to the true cotacacheans. They allow us to walk, to fight for the new participative democracy, to build the peace, and to obtain the development with dignity. Making Cotacachi participative, productive, decentralized, and a solidary canton.

Your visit to this Web Site and especially to our Multiethnical and Pluricultural Municipality will remain in our memory forever.

How nice… ideas, dreams, proposals, and projects that unite allow the people to us to walk, and fight for the new participative democracy, that builds  peace, and and development with dignity.

I am all for this and one thing I know as the people of Cotacachi walk and fight for this they’ll be walking on wonderful Cotacachi sidewalks.

They are pretty low tech… but how important… these sidewalks… our pathways of going to and fro.  We do not give them much attention… until they crumble or are not there. Then we’ll miss them. So take heed… Cotacachi sidewalks are good and getting better all the time!    That makes this a nice place to be.

Ecuador Shamans & Essential Oil

Ecuador shamans use essential oils in their healing ceremonies and in many other ways.

While living in Ecuador with the shamans, Merri, I and our friend Candace Newman learned many additions to existing healing techniques with essential oils.

Here is Candace with a Taita Yatchak, our daughter Francesca and friends at Machu Pichu.

Ecuador-shamans

Essential oils offer many health balancing features and can be delivered though breath, the skin, the soles of our feet and the palms of our hands.

Ecuador shamanic healing wisdom, uses essential oils and the palms of our hands because our hearts extend to others through our palms.

Ecuador shamans hold the hands in high regard as the instruments for giving and receiving….which they view as a scared act. In Ecuadorian agriculture for example the elders are given the sacred honor of planting the seeds. Special bags (shigras) are woven from the threads of the Cabuya  (Agave or Century Plant).

Here I am with an Ecuador shaman next to a Cabuya.

ecuador-shamans

These long leaves are then scrapped by a master.

ecuador-shamans

Until the pulp is removed and all that is left are fibers.

ecuador-shamans

This is the raw material of the shigra.

ecuador-shamans

This fiber is then hand died and woven into these colorful bags.

ecuador-shamans

The bags are worn over the heart in the seed spreading ceremony… not around the waist where it would seem easiest to cast the seeds.  The seed must be given from the heart and the hands.  Shigras have been part of women’s daily life since Pre-Columbian times. Archeologists have found similar bags that are 1000 years old! Why have they withstood the test of time?  Because they are part of the sacred giving of life.

In and out. This is life… the law of action and reaction.  We cannot have one without the other and most of this process takes place through the hands…. and this means giving and taking from the heart.

Once a Taita Yatcak (the highest of shamans) in Ecuador explained that banks were places of great energy.  When we receive money, he told us, we should always receive it with the left hand… the hand of receiving.  When we give money… always with the right…. subtle but powerful energy!  From the subtle, we are formed.

Candace writes about the palms of our hands:

Healing Palms with Essential Oils in Ecuador

In developing our Touch With Oils® work over the last 17 years of private appointments, retreat work and Hospice, I noticed that the most comfortable and familiar place for one to be touched is the hands. Feet and face can be uncomfortable and invasive for some people. Shaking hands is an acceptable way to greet people, and a way of extending a welcome. So we are already used to touching with our hands. They are also easy to get to!

The palms of our hands, like the soles of our feet, are a highly absorptive part of our body. These are excellent pathways for the benefits of essential oils to enter our systems. The two most common places for reflexology are hands and feet. We reach into the core of our body through our palms, just like the soles of our feet. The fingers have reflex points for head, sinus, and face tension. An overall gentle hand massage can balance the autonomic nervous system and change the way we feel in minutes. It’s also a wonderful tool to have for helping others.

One day during my month’s stay at Rosaspamba, the Ecuador Shaman said one of his apprentices was in bed with a stomach ache and would I help him…..so out come the palms of my hands to the rescue.  I made a little puddle of Jojoba oil in my palm and added 2 drops of pure Peppermint essential oil.  I applied a little to his nose first to get the “Peppermint Medicine” into his system (through the biochemistry of the nose-brain connection)…and then did a slow gentle belly rub.

Later as I sat on the steps of the little “cabin”,  looking out over the tops of the Andes mountain range,

Ecuador-shamans

Candace at our hacienda, Rosaspamba.

I noticed  a place in the mountains that looks just like the palm of a hand open towards the sky. Just an awesome sight, as if the mountains were making an offering to us as we rest in their sanctuary of nature. I have always said “God’s grandest cathedral is Nature….in all her majestic garb”.

Ecuador-shamans

Candace’s view.

There was another time in the hotel in Quito where a Palm Blend of Jojoba and a drop of Peppermint helped another person in the group with belly rubs due to an upset stomach. Then after a long day in the van visiting areas outside Quito, another traveler was feeling queasy and a little hypoglycemic due to lack of food. This time I put 1 drop of pure Peppermint straight in her palm, had her rub her palms together, cup her nose, close her eyes and breathe deeply.  Essential oils are so strong,  the effects from this palm cupping is immediate.

All we need to do is show up with the palms of our hands….and a little bit of oil.  Peppermint is a necessary for traveling.

Cotacachi Sun

One huge benefit of Cotacachi is the sun. Even January to March which is the rainy season in Cotacachi, there is plenty of sun.  I watch it rise behind the Cathedral each day.  Here he comes!

cotacachi-sun

This year Cotacachi has been cloudy, but rained all day only one day.  Merri and I walk early every morning  and have only been wet one time since early January.  The weather varies through the day…starting in the higb 40s or low 50s and working up into the 70s.

This makes farming and gardening great.  The fields are volcanic rich.  We walk here daily. The planting was a couple of weeks ago.  Now the beans are coming up fast.

cotacachi-sun

There is a chance to have plenty of Cotacachi sun almost every day. This is really good for health because the sun produces Vitamin D.

Dr. Mercola recently posted an article at his site which says:

A meta-analysis of 18 randomized controlled trials has found that supplemental vitamin D significantly reduces mortality from all causes.

The analysis emphasizes the medical, ethical, and legal implications of promptly diagnosing and adequately treating vitamin D deficiency.

Not only are such deficiencies common, but vitamin D deficiency is implicated in most of the diseases of civilization. Vitamin D’s final metabolic product targets more than 200 human genes in a wide variety of tissues. One of the most important genes vitamin D up-regulates is for cathelicidin, a naturally occurring broad-spectrum antibiotic.

Since vitamin D deficiency is both endemic and is associated with numerous diseases, it is one of the most important medical problems in modern society. Treatment of vitamin D deficiency in otherwise healthy patients must be individualized due to the numerous factors affecting vitamin D levels. Steps should be taken to keep patients with chronic diseases associated with vitamin D deficiency, especially internal cancers, in the higher normal range of vitamin D blood levels.

Part of this is the sun…part the fresh food. The markets and shops are filled with really inexpensive fruit and vegetables of all types. Here is a typical display.

There is one other benefit. This is the geese at our North Carolina farm two days ago.

cotacachi-sun Our friend Richard Goebel who looks after the farm wrote: It’s been so cold ,windy and snowy today that the geese stayed really close to home.

When even the geese are cold, it’s a good time to be on the equator in the Cotacachi sun.

We hope we’ll see you in Cotacachi or on the coast to enjoy the sun!
