Ecuador Fares & Legal Tips

Here are some Ecuador fares & two legal tips learned from living and doing business abroad for 41 + years.

First, the facts on fares.

Ecuador air fare fact #1: Ecuador air fares are really low again. Ecuador air fares from Quito to Miami seem to rise and fall from under $400 to over $500. Right now LAN is offering the very low rate of $398.  Here is this low cost Miami-Quito air fare that LAN sent to Merri.

Ecuador-Air-Fare

Ecuador air fare fact #2. Ecuador is easy to reach.  The flight from Miami is about 3 hours and 45 minutes. There are direct flight from Miami on American, LAN and Aerogal… Atlanta (Delta) and… Houston (Continental).

Merri and I fly from Atlanta and it takes less time and costs less than our frequent flight to Portland, Oregon.

Ecuador fact #3. Ecuador is a great place to escape the cold weather at this time of year.  See Ecuador weather comparisons here.

You can look up fares at www.kayak.com and www.farecompare.com

See a two part report on getting Tickets to Ecuador here.

cultures.

Yet Ecuador like all places also has its ways.

I began thinking about this when numerous readers wrote to me asking for an opinion about the arrest in Ecuador and extradition to the US of  an American naturopath who has been living in Ecuador.  Several newsletters and blogs have featured an article stating that this naturopath was kidnapped by the FDA.

I do not know the naturopath nor have I read anything else about this in the news so I contacted a friend who is an attorney and who has been involved in improving Ecuador’s law enforcement system.

The reply was:  Good morning Gary. I could not find any information about this in Ecuadorian newspapers. I will contact the chief of the police in Cuenca to learn firsthand the facts about this.  Warm regards.

I’ll report as soon as I hear more.

There are several issues readers asked.

The first issue about this arrest seems to be claims that the FDA committed a number of illegal acts in this process.   Readers have expressed shock about this.

They should not be surprised.

There have been crimes committed for years.  Our newsletters have focused on this a bit well before we started our website in the 1990s.  So this should not come as any great surprise.

Did this corruption begin in the 1980s?

I recall writing in the 1980s or 1990s about a report on IRS abuses.  That report outlined how the IRS hired a prostitute to distract a foreign banker in Miami. While the banker was busy with the woman, the IRS ignored normal procedure and helped themselves to a briefcase full of banking records.

We do not have to look far to see illegal actions.  A www.cnn.com article entitled “a 1998 Senate Panel Hears Stories Of Alleged IRS Abuses” says:  WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, April 28) — The Internal Revenue Service was once again under fire on Capitol Hill Tuesday, as a Senate committee launched another round of hearings, this time focusing on alleged abuses of power inside the tax agency.
In the first of four days of testimony from taxpayers and agents, the Senate Finance Committee heard instances of the IRS stepping over the line, including stories of retaliation against whistle blowers and raids on taxpayers’ homes that may not have been justified.

Some of the harshest criticism was aimed at the agency’s criminal investigation division, as witnesses complained that the investigators used excessive techniques and were out of control.

A New York Times article entitled “DIRECTOR OF I.R.S. ISSUES AN APOLOGY FOR AGENT ABUSES” says:  WASHINGTON, Sept. 25— The acting commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service issued an extraordinary public apology today to four individual taxpayers — and, by extension, to all American taxpayers — for severe mistreatment at the hands of agency officials. The tax official, Michael P. Dolan, also promised immediate changes to eliminate incentives for misconduct and make the I.R.S. more responsive to public complaints.

At the conclusion of three days of hearings on I.R.S. abuses before the Senate Finance Committee, Mr. Dolan said that he was deeply troubled by the charges leveled against the tax agency this week by taxpayers, current and former I.R.S. officials, and outside watchdogs.
Today’s session featured testimony from five current I.R.S. agents and one former agent, their identities concealed by fabric-covered screens and their voices electronically altered. Their testimony included the following accusations:

*Agency workers browse through tax returns to snoop into the finances of celebrities, relatives and prospective dates.

*I.R.S. agents are judged by their total tax collections, no matter how poorly documented.

*Managers cover up abusive behavior by collection agents.

*Revenue officers consider all tax debtors ”crooks or flakes” who deserve no sympathy.

Earlier in the week, in emotional testimony from four taxpayers, the panel heard from a retired priest who was wrongly assessed $18,000 in taxes from his mother’s estate and from a California woman who went through a 17-year nightmare with the agency that arose from a mix-up over her husband’s identity.

The hearings were the first formal oversight of the tax agency conducted by the Finance Committee, which has nominal supervisory authority over the I.R.S.

Mr. Dolan said that the agency had programs to prevent harassment of taxpayers and abusive collection efforts, but acknowledged that in the cases presented to the Senate, and perhaps in many others, internal controls had broken down.

”While each case was different, the end result is indisputable: We were wrong in the way that we handled many aspects of their cases,” Mr. Dolan said beneath bright television lights in the cavernous Finance Committee hearing room. ”I fully appreciate that an apology is little consolation when it comes at the end of the stress and obvious frustration these men and women have experienced. Nevertheless, I do apologize to each of them. They deserved far better treatment from the I.R.S. than they received.”

Did this corruption begin in the 1970s with Watergate perhaps?

Nah.  Harry Truman, considered by some to be the best US President was stained by corruption charges that lead to the firing or resignation of 166 lower level Federal employees in 1950.

In fact if we look back, we can see corruption and abuse of power clear back almost to the beginning of the US.  In 1831, Robert Potter a Congressman from my other state North Carolina had to resign from office  after castrating two men.  Ouch.

It seems that there are good and bad people in every organization…. public and private.   Governments probably have corruption and abuse of power at about the same level as private companies and other types of organizations do.

We have seen people in the US government start wars based on false information. We have seen them condone torture. We have seen them put people in illegal, hidden prisons… so why would anything be a surprise?

The second issues is that purportedly a corrupt Ecuadorian police we involved as well… and American Airlines as well.

I cannot comment except to say… we are digging for the facts which leads me to two legal tips about living and doing business abroad.

Legal Tip #1: Do not move from one country to another and feel that being beyond the borders of your previous home will provide you with special protection.

All organizations, governmental and not, have some corruption and abuse power.  This is human nature. Expect it and be careful of it.

We live in a global economy that is growing more closely linked all the time.  The long arm of the law can extend beyond borders.

A Time magazine article entitled “Can Swiss Banks Thrive After the UBS-U.S. Deal?” by Helena Bachmann outlines how much pressure US authorities can place on governments abroad.

An excerpt says: After months of behind-the-scenes wrangling that threatened to strain relations between Switzerland and the U.S., the fate of secret Swiss bank accounts reportedly holding billions of dollars in undeclared assets is finally resolved.Under an agreement announced by Swiss and U.S. authorities on Aug. 19, Switzerland’s second largest bank, UBS, will disclose the names of approximately 4,450 American account holders suspected by the IRS of evading taxes. In return, the U.S. Justice Department will withdraw its lawsuit against the banking giant and stop demanding the names of 52,000 Americans accused of hiding assets in offshore accounts.

US officials are not the only ones who abuse power and break laws.  A BBC article “Liechtenstein fury at German tax snoop” by Steven Rosenberg explains how German tax authorities bribed a businessman for bank records.

Here is an excerpt:  Germany has launched a tax evasion investigation using the data, which was supplied by an anonymous informant who was reportedly paid 5m euros (£3.75m; $7.3m).  It was a former LGT employee who stole data relating to German businessmen in Liechtenstein.
It is thought this could be the same information that was bought up by the German secret service.

Germany went on to sell this data to all tax authorities in Europe and I was delighted when the Danish government turned the data down saying they refused to use information that had been illegally obtained.  This is one reason I use Jyske Bank as my main international banker.

Americans can learn more about Jyske’s services from Thomas Fischer at fischer@jgam.com

Non Americans should write Rene Mathys at mathys@jbpb.dk

Here is tip legal #2 for living abroad. The reverse is also true. If you move to another country do not expect your citizenship to protect you if you fall afoul local law.  Do not ignore local laws.

Some recent events remind us of this.   A U.S. student recently convicted of murder in Italy found little help from being an American.

US citizens are not the only who have discovered this sad fact.    Schapelle Leigh Corby, a 27 year old Australian woman traveling to Bali. Indonesia was arrested in 2004, at the airport after 4.2 kilograms of marijuana was found in her boogie-board bag.  She was convicted of importing a group 1 narcotic and sentenced to serve 20 years in jail.  All legal and judicial appeals have been exhausted.

About the same time Singapore executed a 25 year old Australian for drug smuggling despite repeated requests for clemency.

Laws in a new country you visit or move to may seem stupid.. exaggerated… or ignorant… but do not break them. For example Ecuador is very harsh on drugs and child molestation.  Ecuador is one of the few countries I know that inspects for drugs when you come in and depart from the country. If you visit Ecuador, do not ignore this fact!

Every country has its customs, rules, regulations and foibles… in life… in law… in business.

One reader recently sent me this note.

Gary, I am interested in exploring the possibilities of Ecuador , but this seems like  a lot of money to pay for the privilege of letting people try to sell me something.  Seems like they should pay to be in the seminar.  At first I thought it must include the room, but that’s not the case either. What am I missing?

Here is my reply:  You are missing the fact that we do not sell real estate, do not allow our staff to accept commissions on the sale of real estate and have been buying our own real estate and doing business in Ecuador for 14 years.

We ask those whose property we show on the tour to give discounts to our delegates (as we are known to bring many buyers and do not charge commissions). We make sure that sellers show up.  (A bad habit Ecuadorians have is often to not have the property open on time.)

We avoid showing property that in our experience is out of line price wise or quality wise.

We provide efficiency. There are few road signs in Ecuador… no organized brokers… no multiple listings… not many English speaking.  We
plan routes so our delegates can see the most in the shortest time and have English speaking staff with the tours.

We provide contacts with brokers, attorneys architects etc who have shown to be trustworthy.

We share 41 years of experience investing globally and 14 years in Ecuador.

Otherwise chances are you’ll drive around… be lost… see little…  and have no basis on which to compare and when and if you plan to buy
not know if the people you are dealing with are trustworthy.

We feel that our $499 fee is a bargain.  If you hire a car with driver for four days… you’ll have spent almost as much just on transportation.  Regards,  Gary

Our Ecuador real estate tours help you learn the ropes in Ecuador.  We also provide a very personal service that helps you save money and makes your trip to Ecuador more comfortable and secure.   One delegate on a recent tour sent this note.

Merri,  I don’t know how you and Gary give such great individual attention, but I sure appreciate it.  Preparing myself for this trip and the even greater spector of preparing for a life outside the US does not come without a bit of anxiety.  I am so thankful for yours and Gary’s kindness, attention to detail, and responsiveness.  It makes it all seem a little more manageable!  I’ll plan on spending at least the first 2 nights at the Radisson unless we are day two out of Quito.  I will verify my flight with Bonnie.  Thanks again Merri.  Jim

We hope to help you in Ecuador soon.

Gary

Join us on Ecuador’s coast this winter.   Attend our seminars and tours in Florida and Ecuador. See the best Ecuador property for you.  Find the best real estate offers.  Know more of Ecuador. To help you experience a bigger adventure in this wonderful nation, to broaden your horizons, to expand your awareness of all Ecuador offers, we are providing deep discounts in 2010 for those who sign up for multiple tours.

We just added four South coast Ecuador tours that can help you gain extra savings with a multi tour pack.

These extra tours create a dilemma for me. See how below.

Two Pack… 2 seminar courses & tours $998 Couple  $1,349 Save $149 on couple

Three Pack… 3 seminar courses & tours   $1399 Couple  $1,899 Save $98 single or $348 on a couple or more

Four Pack… 4 seminar courses & tours   $1,699 Couple $2,299 Save $98 single or $697 on a couple or more

Five Pack… 5 seminar courses & tours  $1,999 Couple $2,699 Save $496 single or $1,046 on a couple or more

Six Pack… 6 seminars courses & tours  $2,199 Couple $3,099 Save $795 single or $1,395 on a couple or more

These four new south coast tours and our six pack tour price create a bit of a crisis here.

As you can see above a six pack costs $3,099.  This is already a really low price for a tour that last up to 21 days (under $150 a day).

But as you will see below, our International Club membership which allows you and a guest to attend up to 56 courses and tours in 2010  (fees would be $40,947 for all these courses individually) is only $2,999.

Which would you choose… 6 courses and tours for $3,099 or those same 6 courses and tours plus 50 more for $2,999?

“Duh,” I said when this was pointed out to me.

So our only solution is to raise the International Club membership to $3,500… still a terrific deal… but $501 more than before.

Save $37,457…plus $501.  I will not raise the International club fee until January 2010. Enroll in the International Club now at the original fee of $2,999.

You may well wonder why I would make such an offer and ask why the cost is so low? Let me answer this question frankly and from the heart.

First, it helps us do a better job for you. We feel greatly enriched when we can really help our clients improve their lives. We have learned through years of experience the best way to do this is to meet with you regularly. We can best help you learn how to improve your health and wealth through continual expansion of knowledge.

Second, we gain enormous fulfillment from the many friendships we form through the years. Our friends have enriched our lives tremendously. Let me explain this in more detail.

As a member, you will be part of our international family that meets intensively over the next year to examine ways we can make our lives better. Our goal is beyond just having money. Our goal is to have quantum wealth… good health… wealth and fulfillment through service.

Though I give all course delegates my very best, I cannot help but to do a better job for those who come again and again. As we meet often; your particular wants, needs and desires become clear, and it is easier for me to point you in the right direction.

Another phenomenon is that repeat delegates help each other! They get to know one another, help each other learn, share their insights, make contacts and gain more wealth.

Out associates in Ecuador, are experienced business people who live or work and conduct our real estate and export courses.  They can also act as your local backup for the business.

Lifestyle for Two. There is more! I have learned at my courses that many repeat delegates were couples.

We want couples! As a member of the program, you are entitled to bring another person to every single course or tour. The cost for that extra person will be ZERO!  You can bring whomever you wish. Bring your spouse, a friend, son or daughter, partner, accountant, adviser. You can bring the same person each time or a different person, whomever you choose to accompany you. (Accommodations and air fares relating to the courses are not included for members, delegates or their guests.)

Won’t you join us in this exciting club and share Merri’s and my lifestyle for the next year? We look forward to seeing you at as many courses as possible and sharing this wonderful world of abundance and well being with you!

Early Retirement From Seeds of Change

Early retirement means something more than quitting sooner than the norm.

ecuador-airport

In a moment we’ll see details about Quito’s new airport and Guayaquil’s as well.

First let’s see how change can help you retire in Ecuador or retire early anywhere.

If change is here.. If we must adapt to change… why not make the adaption good, enjoyable and fulfilling?

Early retirement means doing something you love to do that supports your lifestyle.

Early retirement means earning in a sustainable way.

Early retirement means being free to go, be or stay wherever you desire.

Early retirement means getting our of the rat race… retiring from the fear and daily hassle that the majority face.

With this view we can have an early retirement… anywhere… at any age!

This is why we’ll share an 11 lesson course entitled International Marketing Strategies starting here.

Retire on Ecuador’s Coast

One great place to retire in Ecuador is on Ecuador’s coast. This is why we are expanding our coverage to include Ecuador’s south coast with the new October Southern Ecuador Coastal Tour.

One difference between Ecuador’s  middle coast and Ecuador’s southern coast is access.

Ecuador’s middle coast s best accessed via Quito and then onto Manta via air. Ecuador’s southern coast is best accessed via Guayaquil and then onto Salinas via van.

So I asked Amy Pinoargote who is hosting the Southern Ecuador Coastal Tour to outline details on flying to Guayaquil. Amy has lives part time in Miami and part time in Salinas so knows the journey well.

Here is Amy’s report on fllghts from Miami to Guayaquil, Ecuador:

Flight options from the U.S. to Ecuador expanded this year, as AeroGal, an established Ecuadorian airline, has added Miami/Guayaquil and Miami/Quito flights.  American Airlines and LAN, a highly regarded South American airline, have been flying those routes for years.  For many budget conscious travelers, AeroGal is a welcome option.

ecuador-airport

I have flown all three airlines from Miami to Ecuador and would recommend any one of them.  The choice usually comes down to schedule and pricing.

In my experience, LAN typically has larger, newer planes.  They fly non-stop between Miami and Quito.  The departure from Miami is in the morning, which has the benefit of arriving in Quito with most of the day still ahead of you.  The downside of that schedule is that it is not an option to take a domestic flight into Miami and then connect to Ecuador on the same day.  Also, LAN often does not fly nonstop to Guayaquil, but instead passes through Quito.  This adds about 90 extra minutes total travel time for the Guayaquil passengers.  The LAN return from Ecuador is in the afternoon, which provides plenty of time to get to the airport.

Because I more frequently travel between Miami and Guayaquil, I often opt for American, precisely because they offer non-stop service.  The American flight leaves Miami in the late afternoon, making it feasible to connect from a domestic flight into Miami earlier in the day.  The downside of the late afternoon flight is that it arrives in Guayaquil after dark.  By the time you gather your luggage and pass through immigration and customs, it can be quite late.  The American return from Ecuador is mid-morning.  If an in-country flight or long drive is required to get to the airport, this could be a disadvantage.  American offers non-stop service to both Quito and Guayaquil.

The newcomer on the route is AeroGal.  After having flown that airline several times in Ecuador for in-country travel with good results, I was eager to try their non-stop service from Miami to Guayaquil.  Although their planes are smaller than those used by LAN, I was pleased with the service.  The departure from Miami is in the evening, which, like American, is convenient for those who need to take a connecting flight into Miami earlier the same day.  Of course that also means a nighttime arrival in Guayaquil.  Another consideration for those traveling to Quito is that the flight is not non-stop; it passes through Guayaquil first.  The AeroGal return from Ecuador is in the early afternoon, which allows time for an early morning connecting flight or a drive to the airport.

As far as pricing goes, with advance purchase I have usually paid around $550 per adult on LAN, around $475 on American and around $375 on AeroGal.  AeroGal’s lower prices have led to good feedback from budget conscious travelers and those traveling with a large family or group.  I have heard several people say they are fans of that airline’s business class fares, which run about $700.

Although LAN and AeroGal are based in South America, both offer English language customer service and websites for booking flights and bi-lingual flight attendants and airport check-in.

LAN and American not only offer service to Ecuador out of Miami, but also out of several other large cities, including New York and Los Angeles.  AeroGal is currently serving only Miami, but has announced that service to New York will begin in December 2009.

Before booking a ticket for travel from your home town to Quito or Guayaquil, it is wise to research domestic flights to Miami.  If you can get a favorable domestic flight, you then book the international portion of your trip on LAN, American or AeroGal from Miami to Ecuador, a flight of just a little more than four hours.  This often can result in a lower overall fare, fewer and shorter layovers and a schedule that better meets your needs.  Keep in mind there are several clean, safe hotels close to the Miami airport that offer free shuttle service.  A few of the most popular are the Hampton Inn and the Hilton.  This makes an overnight layover a convenient option both with free shuttles.

The bottom line for travelers is that there are several good flight between the states and Ecuador, yet another reason to make it your home overseas.

Whether you arrive in Quito or Guayaquil, if it is your first visit, you’ll be surprised by the modern, clean, efficient and friendly airports.

ecuador-airport

Guayaquil’s airport is new, opened on July 2006.  The airport code is GYE and we have found that everything works well here.

ecuador-airport

Quito’s existing airport is in the middle of the city and was refurbished several years ago. A brand new Quito airport opens in 2010.  The new airport is being built on a 3,500 acre site which is ten times larger than the existing airport. The new airport will be ten miles from the center of Quito which will, add about an hours drive (though it will be closer to our hotel Meson de las Flores in Cotacachi).

The new airport on Caraburo Plateau will sit nearly 2,000 feet lower than the current Quito airport.  With the lower altitude and the 11,000 foot runway, airlines will be able to schedule more convenient take off and arrival times. The current high altitude Quito airport requires most flights to  come and go early mornings or  late evenings because cool air provides more lift.

However and whenever you plan to retire, whether you retire in Ecuador, on the farm or to some new exciting way of life… make your retirement be doing something you love.

Ecuador Air Travel Warning

Here is an Ecuador air travel warning that really saddens me to write.

Let me explain why this is sad.

Blaine Watson just finished his Beyond Logic course on Vedic Astrology. We had a really great turn out… more than a full house here at the hotel.

Here is Blaine working with several delegates.

ecuador-travel-warning

Blaine’s course had more delegates than our international investing course. This does not surprise me because so many of our delegates have an interest in looking beyond the traditional health and wealth data.

We work hard to give them great experiences… introducing them to new nutritional and health as well as wealth ideas.

We take delegates for hikes around Cuicocha Crater Lake.

Plus we take them to Chachimbiro Volcanic thermal pools are near by.

This is a wonderful natural place where we can celebrate and immerse ourselves in the pure water of Ecuador .

Here we are enjoying the purest of Ecuador water with one of our groups as we soak for health and longevity in the Chachimbiro thermal springs.

ecuador-air-travel

The Ecuador water comes hot out of the mountains and has one of the most healing blends of minerals in the Americas. The Ecuador water is super hot at the top, about 120 degrees.

Plus we send them to the wonderful Relais & Chateaux La Mirage Spa.

Ecuador-air-travel

One benefit to our course is that we have a close proximity to the wonderful Cotacachi market (five minute walk).  Here one can buy incredible vegetables. Those huge cabbages are between 50 cents and a dollar. You can buy more of those perfectly vine ripened tomatoes than you can eat for a greenback.

The fruit is outstanding as well. This is why Ecuador real estate for sale offers such great value.

We look at the wonderful herbs and spices there… star anise…

We provide them with recipes for purifying teas we learned from a Shaman who lived high in the Andes. Though the village where he lived had no running water, the locals always glowed and their skin looked fresh and clean. I questioned their secret and this is what they said. This cleansing is delightful and works inside and out!

Take six packets of chamomile tea, six long cinnamon sticks and a handful of black cardamom (the sweet pepper shown above). Boil them thoroughly in a couple quarts of water. Set aside a cup or two to drink. Dilute the balance in three to five gallons of water as hot as you can stand. Get in a bathtub or shower. Sit in a meditative pose, relax and slowly ladle cup after cup over your head and entire body. When through, do not rinse or towel dry. Let your hair and body dry naturally. You’ll feel clean with a warm glow, smell like apple pie and your skin and hair will shine!

Enjoy drinking the tea as much and often as you like. This is a sweet, gentle secret that you can enjoy anytime, anywhere.

We even show delegates  how to gain health benefits with indigenous music.  Here are a group of singers at the market.

ecuador-travel-warning

We serve healthy coffee breaks. Here are the pulped fresh coconut balls with hand dipped organic chocolate that our maitre d  Eduardo creates and serves with strawberries and gooseberries.

Ecuador-air-travel-warning

In short we do a lot to fill our clients’ desires for better health…including serving up an good vegetarian menu for our vegetarian delegates.

So here is the Ecuador travel warning. American Airlines does not serve vegetarian meals from Quito.

Blaine Watson is a vegetarian and when we called American Airlines to book his vegetarian meals from Quito back… even though he had a first class ticket… the reply was … sorry. No meal choice from Quito.   We even called the US offices of American Airlines… to no avail.

This is sad… even sadder is the fact that American business… once the leader of capitalism and caring… no longer cares enough… to serve its clients who cannot eat meat… even on first class flights.  This is a long flight.

Next time you travel to Ecuador… if you desire a special meal… check in advance.  American won’t help you… unless maybe people make a fuss.

I prefer LAN and Delta anyway… but I’ll check there as well to make sure that such bad service is not catching.

Until next message, may your choices wherever you are be good.

Cotacachi Travel Fares

We are very lucky that a current global airfare war has pushed Ecuador airfares down to ridiculous levels.  This makes it very inexpensive getting to our winter 2009 conferences and tours….plus gets all of us out of the winter doldrums!

Cotacachi travel fares can be reduced if you understand how to get to Quito and then how to travel to Cotacachi from Quito.

First airfares to Quito.  We often get requests about how to find the lowest air fares to Ecuador and Cotacachi from Africa, Canada,Europe, and the US.  See some incredible rates from all these destinations

We use www.Kayak.com to check fares and regularly find really low Ecuador air fares as you’ll see below.

For example, the round trip Ecuador airfare, Los Angeles to Quito Ecuador, is $480 including taxes. Lacsa is a Costa Rican airline and that Ecuador air fare is available today.  There are 40 flight Ecuador air fare combinations at that price right now.

Here are other US and Canadian fares form kayak.com.  All are round trip and include all taxes and coordinate with our January classes!

Toronto – Quito Ecuador – $660.  American Airlines

Vancouver BC – Quito Ecuador – $799.  Alaskan Air/Continental

Chicago – Quito Ecuador – $662.  United/Copa

New York – Quito Ecuador – $481. Lacsa

Houston – Quito Ecuador – $774. Lacsa

Dallas – Quito Ecuador – $670. Delta

Miami – Quito Ecuador – $496. LAN

Atlanta – Quito Ecuador – $653. American Airlines

One trick is to look for low fares to gateway airports such as Houston, New York, Atlanta and Miami…then look for a low fare from the gateway.  If you are looking for fares from Europe, Africa or UK, look for the cheap fares in the Sunday newspapers and then double check Kayak.

This does not always work though.  As we saw above, it is less expensive to fly to Quito via Dallas than Houston right now.

Sometimes the Ecuador air fare savings, especially from Africa and Europe can be enormous.

Take Johannesburg, South Africa to Quito as an example.  American Airlines offers the lowest direct fare of about $1800…however, if you take Egypt Air to London then you can save an extra $450 each.

If you know a cheap fare from Johan Airport to Amsterdam, Madrid, or London then go for that…and then continue on direct to Quito.  Fiddling around like this can save thousands!

Or get this one…go non stop on Egypt Air to Madrid…then Madrid AA to Quito. This approach brings the fare down to $925 per person round trip from Africa to Ecuador!  If you can find a cheap flight to Madrid from anywhere in Africa or Europe, then you may be able to save big time!

Keep in mind, there are always more than one way to skin a cat.  Think Creatively!!!

Check local European newpapers for air fare bargains to Madrid, Amsterdam and London from wherever you are.  Then check the fares from these three gateways to Quito.  Compile the fares and as above you can sometimes save in the above cases over  $1,500.

We are not travel agents of course, but we help Ecuador Living subscribers and our course and tour delegates find low cost air fares to Ecuador. We provide subscribers and delegates with an email code so we can sort their request amidst the hundreds of emails that arrive here each day.

As an Ecuador Living subscriber, you can also learn how to travel to Cotacachi from Quito at Cotacachi by Train, Plane and Automobile

And don’t forget we can arrange to meet your flight in Quito!

You can subscribe to Ecuador Living Service here.

Ecuador Travel Tips

Here are three Ecuador travel tips.

Lan airlines just announced special low cost round trip, Miami-Quito winter 2009 fares, as low as $496…including tax.

American Airlines immediately dropped their fare to match this.

Ecuador travel tip #1 is watch for this fare war to continue. On December 7th 2008, Aerogal starts a new Miami-Guayaquil service.  Previously when a new flight was added by Aerogal, American Airlines really slashed fares.  Keep your eyes peeled for some super Ecuador air fare deals.

Ecuador travel tip #2 is to drink Canella (cinnamon) panella (unrefined cane sugar) tea when in Quito and at other high Andean altitudes. This is a shamanic tip we share with all our visitors who visit us.  This tea helps combat altitude problems.

Ecuador travel tip #3 on another way to fight high altitudes comes from Candace Newman. Merri and I have traveled in Ecuador with Candace and shamans. She always traveled with Frankincense and even taught the shamans a few lessons about ways to use essential oils during Ecuador travel.

Normally Candace shares a story about Ecuador and essential oils in the later part of the month.  I asked her to contribute early this month.  We always give our children essential oils at Christmas so I wanted readers you who feel the same way to have a chance to order essential oils as Christmas gifts.

Here we are with Candace at our North Carolina farm where we brought an Ecuador shaman, Indian pundit and Native North American healer together for a purification ceremony.

Ecuador-shaman

One other reason for this message is that many of you are traveling to Ecuador for or after the holidays.  Some will find the toilets in Ecuador below standards they are used to.  Part of Candace’s note below is worth reading when she writes:

When traveling from town to town in Ecuador and Peru, using the “bathrooms” along the way are always part of the adventure. One of my favorite things to do was to put a drop of Frankincense in my palm and rub my hands together as a wash. Then cup my nose and breathe deeply.

Essential oils are anti fungal…anti bacterial…and anti viral so this makes great sanitary sense.

Here I am with our son Jake practicing an Andean purification rite…yes the white stuff is snow…though there are easier ways.

Here Merri and I hike in the winter sun into a sacred valley near Cotacachi.

Traveling with Frankincense

by Candace Newman

Frankincense (Boswellia carteri) is known as one of the most important religious and spiritual oils and aromatic incenses in history. It also has historical medicinal value. Franc is from the medieval French meaning pure and fine. Incensium is Latin for to smoke.  Some of the medicinal uses include skin care and repair, respiratory, rheumatism, digestive and nervous issues. In Aromatherapy it is noted for skin care, relaxation, exhaustion and nervous tension. It is a small tree native to the Middle East, North Africa, and South Arabia. The oleo gum resin is collected by making incisions in the bark. The liquid solidifies into orange-brown resin. The resin is collected and steam distilled to produce the essential oil. In many countries, it is an inherited right to farm the trees. Few plants have such a rich history with deep meaning through centuries and civilizations.

The main reason I travel with Frankincense is because its role of protection and strength really resonate with my soul … to the point of feeling like every trip is a pilgrimage. We come home a little different than when we left…. since there is always at least one gem of wisdom to acquire and apply to our life. Historically, it was known and used to protect from disease, and guard the spirit. When I’m tired and feeling weak….I feel the strength is has for me.

Madame Micheline Arcier of London, my most prized teacher of essential oils (who passed away in 2006 on the day we closed our shop in Naples, Florida to move to Colorado) told me she always traveled with Frankincense.

When traveling from town to town in Ecuador and Peru, using the “bathrooms” along the way are always part of the adventure. One of my favorite things to do was to put a drop of Frankincense in my palm and rub my hands together as a wash. Then cup my nose and breathe deeply.

In the hotel after the train ride from Cusco to the high mountain town below Machu Picchu in Peru, I put a drop of Frankincense on the four corners of my bed. This felt like good protection and strength for the high altitude and the climb. It was also an act of gratitude for the whole process.

In several places on these trips, I put 1-2 drops on a cotton ball for my night stand as a personal diffuser.

My husband, John, and I spent a year in Saudi Arabia, and the ancient sense and scents of Frankincense was very evident there. The knowledge that is was precious cargo carried along the secret trade routes, and its connection to the sacred gifts of “Frankincense, Myrrh, and Gold” was quite mystical. It feels good to travel with Frankincense as one of your companions.

Four Simple Ways to Honor and Enhance your Traveling Adventures with Frankincense:

# 1.  To create a sanctuary-environment in your room, put several drops of pure essential oil in a room diffuser, or put 1-2 drops on a cotton ball for the corner of your bed.

#2.    During a quiet time of reflection, put 1-2 drops of oil in the palm of your hand. Rub your hands together, cup your nose, close your eyes and breathe deeply. This is excellent to do before a session of Yoga, Tai Chi, or prayer. If you are outside, add a drop to the sacred ground you are standing on and give thanks.

#3.    If you want to rub some on your temples or heart…make a Palm Blend by putting a little base oil (like olive oil, jojoba, or the local indigenous oil) in the palm of your hand and add 1-2 drops of this soulful essential oil.

#4.    You can make a mist with this if you add 2 drops to an ounce of purified water and shake well. Mist your space, pillow, bed, or head and face when needed.

If you don’t have Lavender with you, you can use pure Frankincense to dab on a cut. If you don’t have Eucalyptus with you for respiratory issues, use Frankincense. It is also a good choice to use in a room diffuser.

In the spiritual arena, Frankincense is known to deepen the breath, promote a peaceful balanced state, and help us slow down, as well as assisting the body in prayer and meditation. It’s known to heal the physical body from disease and wounds. One of the reasons to use Frankincense is for strength and protection and setting the spirit free.

You may purchase a bottle of Frankincense pure essential oil (Boswellia carteri from Somalia) at this link to Candace’s website.

Ecuador Travel News

Ecuador travel news just became better for our Ecuador Living subscribers in two ways.

Ecuador airfares are not high in the first place. For example, the fare for the three hour 45 minute flight from Miami to Quito Ecuador for our November International Business Made EZ course on November 4, 2008 is only $486 on Lan Airlines. This is a reduction from a year ago when fares for the same flight were $565.

Yet Ecuador travel may become even less expensive. Miami Ecuador fares are likely to fall because Aerogal is about to fly from Miami to Quito.

Aerogal is an Ecuador airline based in Quito, Ecuador. Originally it flew passenger and cargo flights between mainland Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands, but has expanded dramatically over the years.

Aerogal now flies from Guayquil and Quito to Manta and Cuenca (as well as the Galapagos) plus Colombia.

Last December Aerogal began a nonstop service from Guayaquil to Miami but then suspended this service just six weeks later because of low passenger loads.

Now Aerogal has new Boeing 757-200 airplanes that will allow the restart of the Miami service. The Aerogal Miami-Quito flights begin again December 7, 2008.

Last December when Aerogal started this service, a fare war began. American Airlines dramatically dropped its fares. Watch for them to do this again!

Aerogal has a young, dynamic President, Gabriela Sommerfeld, who has been working to increase the domestic routes as well as launch international flights to New York and Miami. This fact creates the second bit of good Ecuador travel news.

Gabriela Sommerfeld

The second bit of good Ecuador travel news is better schedules and lower fares from Quito to Manta.

Palmazul, the hotel where we have our condos on the beach has entered into a program with Aerogal so that they can issue coupons in packs of 16 at a special price. The normal fare is $140 round trip but the coupon brings the price down. Because so many subscribers travel to Manta we are buying these coupons so we can pass the savings along to our subscribers.

If you subscribe to Ecuador Living you can get your fare reduced from $140 to $115. As an Ecuador Living subscriber you save $25 per round trip flight.

Even better Aerogal has a new better itinerary from Quito to Manta.

Aerogal has new, better airplanes plus the better itinerary.

Airlines that fly into Quito from the US include:

Aerogal

Avianca

American

Copa

Continental

Delta

LanEcuador

Taca

On the subject of Mariscal Sucre airport, this is one of the nicest emerging market airports Merri and I have ever used. Clean carpeted jetports take you to a shiny marble clad, rose decorated immigration area where the officers politely and efficiently welcome you to Ecuador . Baggage arrives promptly and customs rarely looks at your baggage. We are often from the deplane to our waiting van in less than 30 minutes. The entire process is quiet, well organized and the baggage handlers treat us well.

The new nearly 4,000 acre airport we expect to be even better. Because it is about 45 minutes closer to Cotacachi, this adds some great opportunity for real estate in our area now. We look at this in our real estate tour. See below.

The new airport scheduled to open in 2010 is about 15 miles west of Quito and that much closer (about an hour of travel saved) to our province. This airport will sit at about 7,500 feet altitude compared to Quito ’s 9,500. This lower altitude and elimination of noise reduction procedures (due to being away from town) means larger loads can arrive and take off.

The Manta airport also creates some special real estate opportunity as well. See why here.

Since our Ecuador Living service includes a free night stay at our hotel El Meson de las Flores the first time you stay three nights (a $72 value) and at Palmazul on the beach (a $139 value), you more than save the price of subscription with just the air fare and hotels savings.

Learn about many other benefits you gain as a subscriber at Ecuador Living.
