Ecuador Roses

Ecuador fresh cut Roses

Red roses at our house.

A reader sent this holiday note:  We ordered 100 roses thru Gary and Merri Scott to be delivered to our present address in California for distribution among eight ladies in the family on Thanksgiving day.

The flowers arrived Tuesday, two days before the holiday just as promised by Fed-Ex. They were tightly packed in four bunches of 25 each.  They were divided into 7 dozen + 16 that ended up with my bride of 41 years. Normally with local U.S. roses one cuts the stems at a sharp angle on the bottom and stores them in the refrigerator for a couple days. The roses from Ecuador have stems on them over four feet long. These long stemmed beauties cannot fit into any domestic refrig. that I know of. Place them loosely packed into deep heavy vases full of fresh cold water and the buds open into the largest blooms you have ever seen. Change the water often enough and they will look beautiful for over two weeks. We nursed ours along for three weeks.  Jump in, – the water is fine. You will be glad that you did. Will be interested in hearing about your experience.

Take time to smell the roses and be good to yourself.

I learned last year that Ecuador roses can fill some shopping gaps and send roses to others for their holiday cheer.  Christmas shopping done..hooray!

Your roses include a personalized card so you can have fresh Ecuador roses yourself or send them as gifts.

someone is at the receiving address who is available to inspect and sign for the roses to assure the guarantee.

By March of 2007 the co-op that sends your roses had certified 144 acres.

Certification means the growers have met or exceeded the requirements. There is no middle ground with Veriflora, no differing levels of certification. You either are ecologically sound and certified, or you aren’t.

That means you receive environmentally friendly roses.

Fair Trade Roses

In addition the Verflora seal requires the rose grower to be socially responsible adhering to recognized labor and community standards, specially pertaining to health and safety, work conditions, hiring practices, discrimination, harassment and fair pay.

The growers offer every single one of their workers:

-free doctor and medical treatment at the farm for workers
-day care facilities for infants
-free breakfast and lunch (and dinner when they work late)
-free sports and recreation facilities
-small business loans -when workers want to leave to set up their own small holding farm
-workers fund -for financial help with school fees to buy a car, etc
-complete health and safety equipment provided free -helmets , gloves, masks, etc
-paid maternity leave with a guarantee of work when they want to return
-overtime paid over and above the legal requirements
-Christmas parties, summer holiday excursions, sports tournaments
-a safe and secure work environment with job satisfaction and potential for personal development

There you have it…three great reasons to experience the warmth of the people and beauty of Ecuador this Christmas…the freshest…best and best smelling roses…and you help the environment and the poor by having them delivered into your and your loved one’s homes.

When you order, the rose farm will email you a UPS or Fedex tracking number when the roses are shipped from Ecuador (four days before delivery) to make sure you’ll know exactly when your roses will be arriving.

I regret that, due to customs regulations, our rose supplier cannot deliver roses in Canada.
