The Columbus Day holiday kicked off the holiday season with Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New year to follow.

This can be a time to re-create, but this recreation often involves travel and travel can create a host of health imbalances.

I started my career over 50 years ago with a flight, Portland Oregon to Hong Kong.  I continued that type of long distance travel for decades.   Much of it was accompanied with the added stress of speaking at seminars.

After a long journey I was expected to provide a top performance… a clear mind… an energetic body.

Often I had to speak for up to six hours, just a day after I arrived.  I had to be sure that the flight had not drained me.

Consequently I learned a number of tricks to ease the strains of long distance air travel.

I recall one trip across the Atlantic (to conduct a seminar in Vienna).  A number of delegates were aboard and I observed how they tucked into cocktails , ate a lot of hard to digest nuts, had cocktails, wine with a heavy dinner, desserts and after-dinner liqueurs.

Merri and I skipped both the drink (except water) and the meal.  We had only a little breakfast on the plane so we met the European morning refreshed and ready to have a full day (but we did go to bed early the first night).

Those delegates were dragging and beat. “Where on earth do you get your energy?” they ask.

Boomers are a Long Term Travel Experiment

As boomers reach their sixties and seventies we are reaping the rewards of a long time health experiment.  Never before has a generation been able to travel so much, so fast, across time lines… so many times… for so many years.

Never.

Commercial travel by jets did not exist before boomers began to travel.

Here are seven tips for natural health during air travel.

Naturally Healthy Travel Tip #1: Wear loose, comfortable, but protective clothing and oil down with essential oils.  Long pants, long sleeve short,  loose fitting shoes and socks and a hat. Before I leave on a journey, I massage my feet with an essential oil blend.

When essential oils are applied to our feet, they stimulate zones on our feet that “mirror” the entire body. Stimulating these reflexes sends messages to the associated body parts that help reduce tension, improve circulation and help the body deliver oxygen and nutrients to the cells… important benefits on a flight.

I also massage the oil blend in my hair, put it in my ears up my nose, on my face and on my collar and shirt cuffs.

The oil fights virus and bacteria plus helps balance the flighty feeling on a flight.

Naturally Healthy Travel Tip #2: We eat less.  Evidence suggests that eating less helps us travel better.

A BBC article entitled “Avoiding food may beat jet lag” says:  “The body’s ‘feeding clock’ may over-ride our natural sleep cycles.  Adjusting meal times can help travelers recover from jet lag, a study suggests.

“Harvard University researchers believe the brain has a second ‘feeding clock’ which keeps track of meal-times, rather than daytime, after studying mice.

“When food is scarce, the feeding clock overrides the master clock, keeping animals awake until they find food.

“Thus, shift workers and travelers can keep tiredness at bay by not eating”, they suggest in the journal “Science”.

“A period of fasting with no food at all for about 16 hours is enough to engage this new clock.

“So, in this case, simply avoiding any food on the plane, and then eating as soon as you land, should help you to adjust and avoid some of the uncomfortable feelings of jet lag.”

We begin the travel process by sleeping in late the day of the flight.  This starts the adjustment process.  We get on the flight as late a flight as is possible.  On departure we ask the air service to not disturb us until breakfast and immediately go to sleep.  This gives us six or seven hours sleep.  We eat breakfast on the plane… arrive on the morning and spend a normal day, but go back to bed early, our time.

We especially avoid nuts and other hard to digest foods on airplanes, salted peanuts especially.  Roasted peanuts are high in uric acid and very hard to digest.

The dry, dehydrating airplane environment stresses the kidneys. Hard to digest food that is high in uric acid makes the problem worse.

We also avoid alcohol on airplanes. Alcohol is dehydrating  and hard on kidneys,and liver.

We drink extra water before getting on the flight and after.  We also avoid airplane water (except bottled).   We add a drop of Rose Otto essential oil in the water.  This makes a tasty rose water that aids digestion and the time transition.

Naturally Healthy Travel Tip #3:   Travel east at night and sleep on the flight.  This reduces radiation exposure and helps avoid Circadian Cycle disruption.  As mentioned when traveling east, we begin the travel process by going to bed late and sleeping late the day of the flight.  This starts the adjustment process.  Next we get on as late a flight as is possible.  On departure we ask the air service to not disturb us until breakfast and immediately go to sleep.  This gives us six or seven hours sleep.

When traveling west we go to bed very early the night before the flight, rise very early and take an early flight.  This usually get us to our destination early so we spend a part of a day in normal activity and then go to bed a little late.

This timing reduces the circadian disturbance.

Can’t sleep on the plane?  Buy some Valerian tea at the health food store, ask for hot water and make your own tea. It tastes like what I imagine dirty gym socks would taste, but is a natural way to get to sleep.

We also use melatonin to restore the natural melatonin that is lost on endless time zones. Just buy a bottle of liquid from the health food store and take the prescribed dose 20 minutes before sleep.  Listening to Baroque music and taking White Willow or Aspirin can also help bring on sleep. See more on this in the next tip.  Both White Willow and Aspirin are recognized for their anti clotting ability.  Willow bark is nature’s aspirin.  In fact bark’s pain relieving potential has been recognized throughout history and is the basis for the synthesis of Aspirin.

White Willow is understood to have an anticoagulant action similar to Aspirin, but greatly reduced and a dosage of white willow tends to be more like the dosage of a “baby aspirin” instead of a full aspirin dose.

Always if you are taking any anti coagulants check with your health care giver before taking Aspirin or White Willow.

Dark chocolate is also a tasty blood thinner.

Naturally Healthy Travel Tip #4:  Walk around the cabin, and stretch.  To avoid clotting in the legs, we walk as much as we can before we get on the flight.   Normally we are starting at a small airport buy transferring in Atlanta. Instead of taking the train from one concourse to the next, we walk.

While on the flight, as soon as we wake we get up walk around and stretch.  We also always travel in first class so we can stretch out more.

We do yoga (or stretching) before we get on and off… plus stretch during the flight. This helps keep spinal fluids moving. The spine is often perceived as just a stack of bones in reality it is our gateway of energy and it shifts with every thought we have about life. It is a precise mirror of who we are.  With every stress we have, the interrelationships of bones, muscles, ligaments, and nerves are altered in and through the spine. These deviations are minute, often imperceptible, but no matter how small, changes in the spine can have gigantic effects on the body.

We also have a massage before we take a long flight and ideally when we arrive.

Naturally Healthy Travel Tip #5:   Listen to silence and Baroque music.  Merri and I bring along our Bose noise suppressing headphones and listen to baroque music.

Multiple sensory activity, noises, rapid movement can all aggravate the mind body and soul. We get too much of all three when we travel.   Just making the journey through TSA security can throw us out of balance.

We meditate when we get on the plane, often during the flight and before we disembark.  Few actions calm the nerves as much as meditation.  Listening to Baroque music is another pleasant and balancing action that calms the air element.

Naturally Healthy Travel Tip #6:  We use essential oils during our travels in several ways.

As mentioned before we begin our flights with essential oils.  This adds a layer of protection from virus, dirt, noise, air and so many of the negatives of travel.  They are a sweet travel armor that also raise our spirits.

We take charge of the environment by creating a place of peace in our seat on the airplane. Since most of us are committed to long distance air travel, we can help overcome the negatives of flight by making our seat an oasis of aroma.

Aromas are one of the most powerful, yet least appreciated, physical modulators we can use.

Certain aromas cause the brain to create biochemistry that is calming and soothing due to the olfactory system’s direct connection to the brain. The smells help the right and left brain balance. This promotes a sense of well being that initiates a positive immune system cascade. Aromas, created by pure essential oils, are frequencies, processed by our olfactory system, that represent the reality of the plant from which the oil was derived. In a way we can call the oil a distilled concentration of that plant’s reality. Pure essential oils are enhanced frequencies of the positive (or negative) aspects of its origin.

The positive frequencies harmonize the brain and cause it to create a corresponding brain chemistry… to the emotion the aroma created. Call it a fragrant tuning fork if you like. This happens in less than a second. These biochemical messengers are sent out to cells throughout the body, and our physical tissue responds accordingly.

Aromas are incredibly powerful forces so it is vital to choose aromas that are positive, pure and that make you feel good.

Aromas of high-grade essential oils can be a silent companion of serenity. Soothing aromas encourage us to relax. Essential oils can also reduce motion sickness.

On our flights, Merri and I use pure essential oil of lavender and rose oil mist.

Lavender calms the nerves.

The antioxidant and antibacterial activities of rose oil provides antibacterial activity against at least 15 species of bacteria.

Lice and Bedbugs

As anyone with a school aged kid knows, lice can spread like wildfire, and the fact that aircraft blankets and headrests are not cleaned between flights allows for them to thrive, especially when flights go to and from countries that have particularly high infestation rates. Each individual plane can fly between two to eight trips per day, depending on the size of the aircraft and distance of travel. A plane can take 4-16 flights in two days. This means that over a dozen people may have sat in your seat before you—and lice can live for up to two days without a food source.

To reduce your risk, spray your seat with pure peppermint or Tea Tree oil (which these bugs hate) and of course, BYOB (bring your own blanket).

Naturally Healthy Travel Tip #7: We also try to arrive and leave via a small airport. When we are in North Carolina we depart on Delta’s commuter partner in Tri-Cities Tennessee instead of Charlotte airport.  When in Florida we aim for Daytona’s airport rather than Orlando.

Big airports like Charlotte and Orlando create a lot of added stress… crowds, noise, rudeness and pollution.  This is not a good way to start or end a flight.  By starting at a small airport, there’s not much stress, people remember us and it goes smooth and easy.

Every generation has had health crosses to bear. Neanderthal Man faced the Saber Tooth Tiger.  Medieval  Europe had plagues. Today we face fast food, stress and long flights!

Freedom to travel almost anywhere, at almost any time is a miracle, privilege and responsibility.  Air travel gives us the ability to broaden our horizons and contribute more to the world. These seven simple tips can reduce the negative elements of the great joy of air travel.

Secret of the Hogberry

Gain Amazing Health Benefits with the Hogberry

More than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer.  Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear.  Body fat.

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.  I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat and cancer?   Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.   Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation.  Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

The way to avoid this storage of deadly toxicity is to keep stress down, while digestion and detoxification pathways remain good.

Burn Fat to Burn Toxins

When you burn fat not primarily for weight loss, (though you will lose weight) but for purification, you can turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy.   Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins.  As the toxicity drops, the nervous system has reduced stress and will naturally burn fat instead of sugar.

Intermittent fasting is one way to get the body to burn fat.  There is a way of eating that helps reduce weight, improve energy and purify the body as it returns to a state of natural health.

This is a simple easy way to improve and restore feeling good, but works best when combined with better nutrition, moderate exercise and a purification program that helps make sure that the body is not overwhelmed with too much purification at once.

Avoid the Secret Chargemaster

Few places can destroy health and ruin a lifetime of savings faster than a hospital.  We are at risk from pocketbook surgery and the incredibly dangerous “Secret Chargemaster”.   See below why chargemasters are normally kept secret and how to gain protection from their abuse.

Often, what patients catch in the hospital is worse than what sent them there.  Governments and health care agencies agree  – antibiotic resistance is a “nightmare.”  An antibiotic-resistant bacteria may be spreading in more hospitals than patients know.  About one in every 25 hospitalized patients gets an infection and a 2013 report from the Journal of Patient Safety showed that medical errors are the third-leading cause of death in the country.

Along with the risk of hospital acquired illness and medical errors, the second huge threat to our well being… is health care costs, especially at hospitals.  This is because of the secrets in the Chargemaster and the people who do not want us to know how much hospital costs have risen .  Motivations beyond our good health, like corporate greed, want to keep us in the dark about health care cost.

Being in a hospital can kill as well as cure.  There are odds on that.  What is more certain is that hospitals can kill our finances.

The ‘average’ cost of hospital care is rising because the leading hospitals are front runners in figuring out how to amass market power so they can  raise prices and decrease competition.  A codeine pill that costs $20 at a hospital costs 50 cents at Rite-Aid or Walgreens.  Hospitals have “chargemasters” a price list created by each hospital, that typically has more than ten thousand entries, so almost nothing — even an aspirin, a bag of IV fluid, or a visit from a physical therapist to help a patient get out of bed — is free.  However, those lists are usually secret.

Hospital Failure

The Commonwealth Fund in its latest survey on overall health care ranked US healthcare dead last compared to 10 major countries.  Despite being worst, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, New York Times have all warned about huge, increasingly costly, health care changes.  There are enormous problems in hospitals and chances are they are going to get worse.

When it comes to health care, we may well be on our own.  The very people, institutions and establishments that  we should rely on may actually hurt rather than help our health.  Shamanic Wisdom accumulated over the millennia can fill the gap.
