Overcome Festive FOMO at Christmas

Stop Festive FOMO by taking a social media break.

I recently read an article that said, “The power and pervasiveness of technology have created an era where Facebook, Google, the iPhone and much more produce FOMO”.

“FOMO”, I thought?  “What’s that?”

I looked it up and there it was… “Feelings Of Missing Out!”

That’s new?

Not in my recollection.  Just about every kid I knew in school was worried (we are talking the 1950s and 1960s) about missing out.  We all wanted to be “IN”.  No one wanted to be OUT.  There was even a popular song about it:  “I’m in with the In Crowd”.   The great crooner of his time, Dobie Grey, had a big hit with that song in 1963.  Boomers of my era… you can hear this blast from the past below. So FOMO is another way of saying “Wanting to belong”.  FOMO makes the desire for social media uncontrollable… AKA-an addiction.

Then there is “Festive FOMO”.   The habit of being obsessed in social media doesn’t stop when the holidays kick in.  In fact it can create added holiday tension… like a smoker joining his or her family for Christmas when no one else smokes (and it’s freezing outdoors.)  An alcoholic on holiday with a group of abstemious friends feels a similar stress.  Time with family and friends is marred by the desire to tap into and onto the smart phone or tablet or computer…  just to check things out.

The Huffington Post noted a reason behind the digital FOMO phenomenon. “This trend is common in today’s digital age, when often we are so busy creating a life that looks good on the outside rather than a life that feels good from the inside.”

There is a way to overcome Festive FOMO.  And knowing what to do in the season can make life better, happier, more fulfilled beyond the holidays as well.

To understand the FOMO phenomenon let’s remember the fact that “Medicine is dose”.  Too little water kills us with dehydration.  Too much and we drown.  We see this all the time.  As you read this message…California is burning away.  The Philippines suffers tropical storm floods.

Many technology-related problems arise because of the unforeseen consequences when apparently benign technologies are employed on a massive scale.  Opioids save millions from suffering, but have created an epidemic of deathly overdoses.  Chemical-based farming have increased food yields and stopped millions from starving by polluting our lands and creating illness.

Medicine is dose but when a new technology is really profitable, those who profit will do all they can to make that technology  addictive.

Everyone involved in Social media does their best to make it addictive, so during holidays… it’s a good idea to take a strong social media break.  Cold turkey perhaps… or a lot of limitation at least.  Can you smoke just ONE fag or take just ONE drink?

Christmas is already a time of stress.  There is a word for this as well…“Holiday Blues”.  Many people feel some level of anxiety or sadness during Christmas.   Three causes are:

#1: Wow there is so much more to do!  There is more shopping…more cooking…more people to see…cards to send and more effort required to stick to a nutritious diet!

#2: There are “unrealistic expectations about ourselves” and what we should (and can) do and what we should enjoy.

#3: There are “unrealistic fantasies about our families.”

The digital age, especially social media, intensifies all these stresses.

When you look at those photos, everyone else looks like they are having such a great time.  They seem to be sailing through one great festive party.  This can increase feelings of sadness and stress.

The solution is to take a social (or total) media break and just enjoy the holidays your own way.

Constantly checking the news?  You won’t find much that sounds good!   This is time to connect with friends and family, not disconnect from the real to the digital world.

Yet quitting creates its own stress… ugly little urges to peek back in.  Established habits die hard and social media is addictive.

One tip is use music to ease the stress… and/or meditate.

Music and meditation can both create positive moods.   There is power in music that can  trigger positive emotional moods.

Poets say it.  Robert Browning wrote:  “Who hears music, feels his solitude. Peopled at once.”

Scientists say it.  An NPR article, ‘The Power Of Music’ To Affect The Brain (1) says:  “Science all but confirms that humans are hard-wired to respond to music.  Studies also suggest that someday music may even help patients heal from Parkinson’s disease or a stroke.   In The Power of Music, Elena Mannes explores how music affects different groups of people and how it could play a role in health care.

Musicians say it.  An example is the lyrics in Dobie Gray’s “Drift Away”, a song about the love of  music.

“Day after day I am more confused – I am feelin’ the strain – ain’t it a shame?

“Rhythm, rhyme and harmony – You help me along – Makin’ me strong,

“Give me the beat boys and free my soul – I  wanna get lost in rock and roll and drift away”.

I say it  and use it.  Here is the tip on how you and I can use music as a positive emotional trigger.

When a person writes a lot and is on a schedule as I do and am, he or she has to be in an upbeat, positive mood.

The technique that is now so well supported by YOUTUBE is to use music from your past that triggers a good mood.

The beginning of a report entitled “Positive Emotions Trigger Upward Spirals Toward Emotional Well-Being” (2) by Barbara L. Fredrickson and Thomas Joiner at University of Michigan and Florida State University sum this up:  The broaden-and-build theory of positive emotions predicts that positive emotions broaden the scopes of attention and cognition, and, by consequence, initiate upward spirals toward increasing emotional well-being.

For example, I work toward having a state of relaxed concentration when I write… call it smooth and easy, focused, but not up-tight.  Normally I use Baroque music, but at times, especially when I want to write from the deepest portions of my heart,  I seek something that is uniquely mellow to me.  I have an armory of Golden Oldies that evoke positive emotions.  When I was young, something good happened as I was hearing these songs.  I don’t recall the events, but can feel the positive emotion.

All I have to do is listen for my emotions to drift away!

To create positive emotions that create upward spirals, figure out what music triggers your positive emotions.  Then when you need the emotional hit, listen to your music.

One warning, do not rely too much on any one song too often.  The law of diminishing returns kicks in.   That particular song becomes too much in the here and now and loses its energy to shift.

A Wall Street Journal article entitled “Ways to Inflate Your IQ”(1)  show how you can be smarter and actually add matter to your brainThe article says:

           Many people think of IQ as a genetic trait, like brown eyes or short legs: You’re born with it and you’re stuck with it.

Now, a growing body of research is showing that a person’s IQ can rise—and even fall—over the years.
