Amazon in the Amazon


What could be more fitting than marketing products from the Amazon at Amazon.com.

Yesterday’s message about developing unlikely habits  that grab the beginning of the bell curve showed ways to become a one man Amazon.com.

An example of how a micro self publishing and event business could be started is to look at the Amazon and how it could be marketed via Amazon.com.

If you go there to start a business the trip may be tax deductible. That’s an advantage to start.  More important is zeroing in on a niche and monetizing the effort.

Here is the trick for using this process with a self publishing and perhaps events micro business that uses the 7Ps.  This is an excerpt from Lesson One of “Self Fulfilled – How to be a Self Publisher” 303.

Self Publishing 303 – Lesson 1  – 7Ps in the Bell Shaped Curve

Writers cannot… and should not fight Nature.  Nature is a writer’s best friend because words invoke Nature.  The words in a horror story cause the reader’s mind to produce a flow of adrenaline.

The words in a romance novel cause the reader’s mind to flood the body with oxytocin.

Words are a writer’s way of generating forces of Nature.  The more a writer understands Nature, the better the writing will be.

Writers also want Nature at work so book sales boom as they unfold like a bloom.

Nature’s order of expansion is defined in English as Viral.  Viral expansion is natural and mathematical.  Good, natural, viral book sales expand  at a ratio of 1.618… the Golden Mean.

Fibonacci numbers are a mathematical representation of Nature’s unfolding from leaf arrangement in plants, to the growth of population.

Fibonacci numbers are applicable to every living thing, from a single cell, to a grain of wheat, to a solar system, the sale of a book  and even the use of a technology.

Writers also want their book sales to expand by this sequence.

This is called Viral Expansion… usually expanded by word of mouth when a publication taps into the national psyche.

Book sales and book selling technology are also ruled by Nature and can be seen in the Fibonacci Scale.

All evolution follows the Bell shaped curve and this curve shows an expansion based along the Fibonacci Sequence of 1.618.

In the bell chart above that I picked at random, we can see how sales go viral.

The first wave of book sales (#1) represent 4% of the total orders.

If we multiple that 4% by 1.618,  we see that the second wave of book sales are 6.472% of the orders (shown as 7%).  Multiply 6.472% by 1.618 and the third wave of sales represents 10.471% (shown as 12% in the bell chart).

The fourth wave amounts to 16.943% (shown as 17%) and the fifth wave 27.14% of total sales.  However this fifth wave sends the trend over the top and the petal now begins to draw within.

The fifth wave – The downwards shift in the sales.

As Nature expands, the Fibonacci Sequence reverses as the Law of Diminishing returns sets in.  In the case of book sales, they drop… also along the Fibonacci Scale.

Natural order  also rules over sales technology and this fact led to the creation of “Self Fulfilled – How to Self Publish 303”.

“What will the bell shape curve do to Amazon.com?”

303 began when this thought hit me like a ton of bolts.

I was talking with author Scott Nicholson and he brought up the bell shaped curve and the current number of new writers who are publishing their books at Amazon.com.

Scott lives near me in North Carolina and is a great writer and has written 15 thrillers, 60 short stories, four comics series, and six screenplays.

He has won numerous writing awards including the grand prize in the International Writers of the Future contest in 1999.

His latest book, McFall, was released as a series by one of Amazon.com’s publishing subsidiaries under a two book deal Scott has.

Scott says that 20,000 new books a day are published at Amazon.com!

Scott wrote about this at his website Authorscottnicholson.com I’ve gotten out of the “writer babble” business for two reasons: (1) I don’t know as much as I thought I did, and (2) it’s all changing so fast that even the boldest predictions of digital evolution quickly become laughable.

He explains how after the 99-cent ebook had a year’s run, and the pool was finally beginning to find stratification (crappy books sinking, good books nailing stable plateaus) Amazon unleashed the free ebook.

He adds at his site: I’m on record as predicting the flat-text e-book era has an outside range of five years, at least for fiction—specialized non-fiction and manuals will continue to be valuable for their content alone. I believe e-book sales will continue, but certainly not with expanding profits for all involved. Now that there are 20,000 free Kindle books available every single day, how long before readers come to expect and even demand free books exclusively? And what happens when the system is set up so that those who are the best or luckiest at giving away books become the people who dominate the bestseller lists?

Freebie roulette. Great for readers. Good for Amazon (maybe in the short term, but it is hard to figure the long term). Terrible for authors.

The market is diverse enough to support many different price tiers, but writers who want to survive in 2015 will need to make money off of free books, or they will soon quit writing.

Then I realized that I know the exact answer because I have been living it for 45 years. I have been “writing to sell” using monetization and the 7Ps.

Amazon.com will change.  The firm has incredible income but small profit.   Amazon.com is the 1,000 pound  gorilla when it comes to selling books.  For how long?  Just when everyone thinks they have the system figured out… a new disruption comes along.   Ask the guys at Borders or Barnes & Noble!   Wait… that’s right. I forgot.  Borders is gone.  Barnes & Noble’s revenues decreased 8 percent in 2013 so it’s also on its way out?

An article at MIT Technology Review titled “Why the Father of the Consumer Internet Invests in E-Commerce” shows one way that internet publishing and e-commerce are evolving.   The article says:  Steve Case brought the Internet to Main Street.  Now he wants everyone to open an online store.   Case is no buzzword-dropping futurist. He’s practical, with a sharp eye for Main Street’s needs and, he says, “big ideas that are still small companies.”  Its largest investment, $40 million, went to BigCommerce, a company that brings “Amazon-like capabilities” to any merchant. The pool of potential customers is huge: 95 percent of retail establishments in the U.S. consist of a single store.
