Recently a reader sent me a note when I mentioned that I rode my old rusting  bikes for exercise.  His note and my reply can explain how I emphasize FUN.

He wrote:  I did 15 miles today (AND I DID IT FAST!). That’s my Sunday morning workout.

I take a pre workout product don’t get any of the lactic acid build up I used to get on my bike ride.

I have to say that I am so incompetent when it comes to anything mechanical when I decided to get a bike I bought one that had no chain. One
of the smartest things I ever did.

You’ve got the loot…get yourself a decent bike and really enjoy the ride.

My reply clarifies some of my thinking relating to exercise.


My bike is a Walmart special from the 90s at the heart shaped oak tree.

The bucks matter not.  The function of that old bike is perfect and it brings so many warm memories each time I jump on the seat.  My health disciplines are based on finding good exercise that I love rather than forcing. I have learned about myself “with pain there is no gain” because I will not keep it up.

My bike rides are ambles where I enjoy the scenery… no outfit… no helmet… though I work up a mild sweat and make the legs burn a bit.

Plus I am very loyal. How could I abandon a faithful bike of 30 years for a trophy ride?

That rust adds wind resistance and the basket on back creates weight so I have to peddle a bit harder.  Why pay more money to eliminate this healthy resistance?

Each morning I mediate for 30 minutes or so… take a 15 to 20 minute sauna and do a number of important yaga poses including the sun salute.

I take a long walk almost every day or a canoe paddle or a bike ride or something that is exercise AND FUN.

When I ride on my rusty old bike I feel like a kid rolling down the hills.  Plus I never have to worry about someone stealing my bike!

Fun is one of the key elements of natural health and learning.

Often we can learn how to improve our habits created by the unnatural dogma of society by observing nature’s way.

Children are so playful too and this playfulness turns them into dynamic learners.

The Western culture tends to compartmentalize life into separate spheres:  work, family, education, politics, religion, recreation and entertainment.   Most spheres are seen as being serious.

These assumptions of division are not natural and they certainly are not fun!  Work becomes pressure. Education creates tension… politics… anger… exercise… work.

This compartmentalization separates work from play. This is an error.  Play is nature’s way of motivating us and helping us learn.  Joy is the most powerful motivational force. Fun and games are God’s great teachers!

Society can beat the playfulness out of us.  Makes us serious.  This can create stagnation, rigidity and fear of change at a time when embracing change can be our most valuable asset!

Reverse the process.  If youth encourages play…. then play encourages youthfulness.

Start to play in your work and exercise and your business… your investing…. your health can improve if you add play to your exercise programs.


Chapter 13 in Jay Glaser’s book “Body Renewal: The Lost Art of Self Repair” is entitled “Getting Serious About Playing” says:  Everything in nature including living organisms, is under the jurisdiction of the principle of Least Action. From ancient times, natural philosophers observing the smooth arc of a tossed ball or the the path of refracted light have declared that nature acts by the most economical of means.   The common element of every prescription in Vedic medicine is effortlessness.

How does this Vedic principle apply to sport, recreation and exercise? Just watch puppies, kittens and kids.  Wrestling, horseplay and tussles are their work.

The Value of Play. Exercise done in this context is the wisest. because it is the most enduring and the safest. It’s harder to push yourself to the point of injury when you have the attitude, “I’m just out playing”.  Like a newborn cub, the human body will intuitively seize on the requirement to tone, strengthen and condition itself.

Don’t exercise, Just Play.  A good research study shows that exercise is as effective as the anti-depressant Zoloft in relieving depression especially in the long run. More recently, it was shown in a study of Scottish adults that being physically active just once a week for twenty minutes including doing housework and gardening – is enough to lower risk of psychological distress and improve mental health.

Play can help improve your health and wealth!  This is why our mantra for two decades has been turn your passion into profit.

During these times of change, when economists and politicians and the press… the whole establishment say we are economically recessed or depressed or indebted…  look for the things that make you want to play.   Games you play can improve health, happiness and financial success.


Secret of the Hogberry

More than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer.  Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear.  Body fat.

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.  I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat and cancer?   Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.   Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation.  Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

The way to avoid this storage of deadly toxicity is to keep stress down, while digestion and detoxification pathways remain good.

Burn Fat to Burn Toxins

When you burn fat not primarily for weight loss, (though you will lose weight) but for purification, you can turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy.   Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins.  As the toxicity drops, the nervous system has reduced stress and will naturally burn fat instead of sugar.
