“Quicker” in Writing & Selling

Lesson #22:  “Quicker” provides a lesson in the algorithms…  getting readers  and bringing them back again and again.

We can be quicker with our writing if our publications are selling well.

Our writing does not have to be perfect to sell well.

Selling well can be quicker with a  good pricing strategy such as used by the author of the book “Quicker”.


I am a voracious reader of fiction and am continually tracking the Kindle “Best Sellers” looking for new authors and heroes.

This process turned me onto “Quicker” by Laurence Dahners.


Dahners is an orthopedic surgeon who teaches at the University of North Carolina Medical School who became interested in writing novels.

This is a near future SciFi/Thriller.  The heroine is Ell Donsaii an intrepid athletic phenom and mathematical genius who develops a quantum mechanical theory that changes the world of communication as she defeats a terrorist plot at the Olympics.

A couple of  reviews at Amazon.com explains a lot.

One review says: I read this first book of the series a while ago.

I just finished reading the third book and immediately purchased the fourth as well as two other unrelated kindle books by the same author.  Laurence Dahners is a new part-time writer, one of those who would not exist if not for the new paradigms of the internet, electronic books, and self publishing.  I am very glad that he got his chance!

Another review:  Quicker (an Ell Donsaii story) is not an earth shaking book or series, it is not very long, it is not full of long character development.

The other books of the series are FUN!

Dahners style is transparent and easy to read and captivating and compelling.

His writing reminds me of two writers from the golden age of science fiction, Andre Norton and E.E. (Doc) Smith.

Like Norton his books are fast and easy to read and capture your interest and empathy for the characters.

Like Smith, these books capture a “sense of wonder” about the revealed universe.

The characters, prose, and action of these books are very suitable for young adult readers, but I am an old retired scientist/engineer of 67 years and I enjoyed them immensely.

Let me go on record… the character development is pretty bad.   This book will not gain any literary awards… except maybe at the bank… because of two facets… the earnestness of the sympathetic character and the excellent pricing strategy.

This lesson examines three important points of writing to sell.

#1: Literary success is not required for commercial success or reader success.

#2: A good pricing strategy can create and build a loyal readership.

#3: Backlash can be a powerful selling tool.

Literary Success

The heroine of this series is Ell Donsaii.  As the review pointed out… her character is not well developed… immature…  repetitious and unrealistic.  This is not a criticism.   I have read and enjoyed the four books and will most likely read them all.  Part of this relates to backlash… as we’ll see in a moment.

Th point here is that literary critics might tear this book to shreds.   If so I hope Dahners laughs at them all the way to the bank!

You do not have to write a literary masterpiece to have financial success… happy readers and to make a positive point.

Don’t let your fear of your publication not being perfect stop you from moving forward.

There are about 7 billion people in the world.  35% use the internet.  That’s about 2.45 billion people.  10% is 245 million readers. 1% is 24.5 million readers.  1/10th of a percent is 2.45 million readers. 1/100th of a percent is 245,000 readers and 1/1000th of a percent is 24,500 readers.

I promise you, 24,500 loyal readers can make you rich and can help you positively improve the world!

There you have it… 1/1000th of 35% of humanity is more than enough.  The critics do not matter at all…  just your loyal readers.

Pricing Strategy

A good pricing strategy can help you attract and build that loyal readership.

Because I read so fast and devour  so many books… I look for those that cost less.  There are a few authors I will always buy, but my experience is that many .99 cent books by unknown authors are as good as those written by known authors at $12.99.  For .99 cents  I’ll give a new author a try as I did Dahners with his first book Quicker which is offered at Amazon.com for Kindle at .99 cents.

I liked “Quicker” so pulled up his second book “Smarter”.  Oops. The price was $2.99!  But I liked “Quicker” enough to pay the extra two bucks.

This was good enough as well that I pulled up the third in the series “Lieutenant”.  Oops.  The price was $3.99.   I liked the first two enough to pay the extra. The rest of the series is priced at $3.99.

This is the pricing strategy…. start low.  Create loyal readers. Charge more for later books.

Another way to get readers is to offer your Kindle book free.

Amazon.com allows authors to offer their book free for five days.   One delegate at our writer’s course (Nicki Goff) used this approach to start her readership at 10,000 almost immediately.

Dennis and Nicki Goff first attended one of our seminars in Ecuador and stayed with us at our hotel Meson de las Flores (the original name). Quinoa sustained the ancient Incas and has been grown continuously for over 5,000 years. The plant thrives in poor soil, and the high mountain terrain of South America’s Andes.

Qunioa has been described as the super grain. Actually it is the SEED of a leafy plant that’s related to spinach. What makes quinoa special is that it has a very high protein content, more than any single grain. Plus unlike grain, Quinoa has the amino acid “lysine”, so the protein is complete. In addition to sharing meals with Dennis and Nicki, we also visited the countryside with them… met with an indigenous village we were helping improve their water supply.

These visits helped stimulate Nicki’s interest in quinoa. She was already an avid gardener and eager cook.  Perhaps these visits formed the beginning of a passion for cooking with quinoa.

Later when Dennis and Nicki visited us in Florida… she outlined her ideas for publishing The Quinoa Cookbook.  We further discussed how to use the website marketing system David Cross had developed to build sales and repeat sales.

We also put Nicki in touch with our readers above to help her refine how to format her book for Amazon.com Kindle sales.

Then Nicki and her sister enrolled in our Writing to Sell Camp in North Carolina. Her arrival coincided with 10,000 downloads of her Quinoa cookbook!

What a joy seeing how helping and connecting people helps all create their own special success.  How beautiful to see friends turn their passions into profit!

Seven P Secrets of Self Publishing

Here are seven secrets that can help you earn as a writer and self publisher.

These secrets are important because growing numbers of unknown writers have become famous writers and rich by self publishing over the internet.

Take for example Amanda Hocking.  After self publishing her first book at Amazon.com in the spring of 2010 she became one of the the best-selling e-authors. In the next year her book sales grossed approximately $2 million.

In 2011, St. Martin’s press paid Hocking more than $2 million for the world English rights of a four book series.  In 2013 she sold another series to St. Martin’s Press.

E.L. James is another such story.  She sold 250,000 copies of “50 Shades” via Createspace and Amazon.com before publishers noticed her and published the erotic romance trilogy Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker, and Fifty Shades Freed which sold over 70 million copies worldwide, setting the record as the fastest selling paperback of all time.

Hugh Howey is a third example.  He was working for $10 an hour in a book store when he self published his novel Wool, typing in a storage room during his lunch breaks. Soon he was earning over $100,000 a month on Amazon. This helped secure a six-figure book deal from Simon & Schuster, and an option for film by Ridley Scott, director of Blade Runner and Alien.

These are great inspirations.

I know Hugh.  Sometimes we get together at my  farm and play chess (he beats me badly).

Hugh’s success could not happen to a more deserving and talented person.  He deserves every accolade he receives and he does not take a bit of this success for granted. Hugh is pouring enormous energy into being worthy of his readership.

Neither you or I are likely to have this type of success.  That’s not bad.  The good news is… we do not need this type of success to have a rich and fulfilled lifestyle.  Self Publishing offers so many opportunities that one can have a life that most people only dream of as a journeyman writer, instead of a super star.

May I hastily add that the path to stardom begins as a journeyman… so the journeyman’s path brings success without stardom… but can also lead to stardom.

What most success stories like those of Hugh Howey or E.L James or Amanda Hocking rarely share is the many hours of writing they devoted before their self published book sales soared.  They were journeymen first… stars second.

The sevens secrets are the journeyman secrets… call them a writer’s armory of tools that allows almost anyone to create successful publications for income and fulfillment.

Take Merri’s and my publishing business as an example.  

Merri and I are not writing stars.  We are journeymen who have for 40 years, year in a year out, earned solid income writing and self publishing dozens of publications about multiple subjects.

The pamphlets contained solid information, but were simple 5″ x 7″ brochures with drawings and explanations. He sold them with a rack to chiropractors, who put them in their offices for patients to read.  These little self-published items sold year in and year out for decades.

There are thousands of ideas of this sort that can lead to big business.  It’s just a matter of defining and then acting on your passion.

Although I can work when I please and go where I wish, for me the most important reason for being a publisher is the satisfaction it brings.  I love the projects I take on, so work doesn’t feel like, well… work.

I’m passionate about investing, so I write and self publish ideas about investing.  Merri and I love Ecuador… so we wrote about Ecuador.

What do you love?  If you love golf, then you can write and sell publications about golf.  Love travel, fishing, dogs, dolls, or art?  Write and sell publications in these fields.

Are you concerned about crime, war, poverty or environmental issues?  You can publish information products that help reduce these concerns.

Would you like to help the world be a more spiritual place?  Publish a newsletter, write a book (or hire someone to write it for you), record a tape… publish something that enlightens people.

Whatever your passion, you can immerse yourself in it and earn income by publishing for ereaders, print on demand, CDs, lists, bound books, or any format you choose.

This is why stardom is not the main goal for most writers and self publishers.  To be immersed in our passion and get paid well for it.  That usually enough.
