Teaching the ION and AR Spanish words helps Merri and me fulfill our mission of readers demonstrating just how smart they really are.
This three lesson series proves that you know a lot more than you realize. Lesson #1 shared 58 Spanish words that you already knew in less than 47 seconds . Lesson two added hundreds more words to your Spanish vocabulary instantly! In fact with the 17 lessons in our Super Thinking + Spanish course you know 4005 Spanish words.

Now let’s look at how to form sentences so you can get some traction in your communication. Tracion and Communicacion
This process requires a bit of memorization. Super Thinking avoids memorizing lists of words as much as possible (this is the least effective ways of absorbing, retaining and recalling information ) but we need a little… in this case we need to memorize two words.
The first memorization is a phrase that we call a “connector phrase” in the Super Spanish course.
The phrase to memorize is “Es posible?” “Is it posible?”
This is a pretty easy recall because “posible” and “possible” are quite similar.
The next memorization is the “me” which is “me”. Again this is not too hard to recall.
That’s enough memorization to begin creating our first sentences. In the Super Spanish courses we use a method we call detouring to find ways to create sentences that “communicate our intent’.
For example if you want to learn Spanish, if you know the Spanish word for Spanish… Español… you can now ask for someone to teach you.
Your intent is to ask “Can you teach me Spanish?”
Yet we do not know the word “you” nor the word “teach” so we simply detour. We know “to educate” which is “educar” derived from education which becomes “educacion”. Most ION words in English are the same in Spanish and the infinitive verb is created by changing ION to AR.
We could ask… “Es posible educarme en español?” which translates to “Is it possible to educate me in Spanish?” This is the beginning… the detour. This is not the way a native Spanish speaker would ask the question but this will be an effective communication. The listener will know that you wish to be taught Spanish.
Lets try one more time. Let’s assume we are in Quito, Ecuador and want to ask a driver to take us to Cotacachi. We do not know the word for “drive” or “take” but we can detour because we know the word to transport… transportation becomes “transportacion” which becomes “transportar“.
We can ask… “Es posible transportarme a Cotacachi?” which translates to “Is it possible to transport me to Cotacachi?”
Again this is not how a local might ask but this very polite question that will communicate your intent beautifully and easily.
You have learned to construct effective Spanish sentences in just a little studying. It is possible for me to communicate in Spanish. “Es posible educarme en español?”
We a few more memorizations of words like “in”, “the”, “an” “tomorrow”, “yesterday”, and a couple more connector phrases you’ll have hundreds of sentences! Your detouring becomes even more effective.
Detouring is the key to becoming fluent in Spanish because it gets you thinking and speaking in Spanish without fear and without worry about sentence structure….
A Livescience.com article by Jeremy Hsu, entitled “CIA Seeks Anyone, Anyone Who Can Speak 2 Languages” helps explain the importance of this.
The article begins: WASHINGTON, D.C. — Many Americans don’t learn a second or a third language from birth, let alone a language that the CIA or U.S. Foreign Service might want. The situation has forced U.S. government agencies to learn how to cultivate the most talented second-language speakers from among college students with little to no other-language expertise.
The article explained how Doughty and her colleagues used tests to train up cognitive processes related to language learning, such as the ability to hold information in the brain while using it for learning. The tests sought to predict those who can succeed despite everything stacked against them.
The article said (bolds are mine): Another surprise came from studies of Spanish-speaking immigrants, because neither age nor language proficiency seemed to predict how quickly the immigrants picked up English. Instead, the fastest learners showed both the greatest motivation to learn and a willingness to use English at every opportunity despite being bad at it (at first).
This is the reason why Super Thinking plus Spanish works. The three day course gets the delegates speaking and thinking Spanish by detouring, aloud and in their thoughts. By using and or thinking Spanish every day the education grows even when Spanish is not being spoken.

Merri and I are in our 45th year of organizing courses, seminars and newsletters about international and Super Thinking lifestyles. The importance of this sharing… by like minded souls… was reinforced when a delegate from a course sent an email that said:
My Dearest Merri and Gary, Thank you for your most gracious hospitality last weekend. I am just thrilled at being a part of your group. You and Gary were exactly as I imagined you to be, warm friendly, kind, considerate, genuine, helpful, fun, sincere, what else can I say……I felt so comfortable in your presence and learned so much in your course. I was sad to leave the farm that Sunday afternoon. You made us all feel so welcome and cared about. You were so kind to make arrangements for a ride with the other delegates from the Charlotte Airport. They were so nice to me and so helpful, by the time the weekend was over I felt like they were my long lost brothers. Monday morning we all had breakfast at the airport together and I was so sad to see them go, I was sad the weekend was over, perhaps sad is not the right word for how I was feeling perhaps Gratitude is a better way to describe it. This delegate’s comments about “belonging and feeling like a brother” to the other delegates is a wonderful refrain we have heard from our readers, year after year.
24 years ago Merri and I created a way that readers can join us to be immersed in a year-long learning program through our International Club.
The ideas behind this program began all those years ago in Vienna, Austria while we were conducting a course there. One of our older delegates, had some sort of attack. The first fear was heart trouble. Several delegates took him to the hospital. Others stayed with him there. I don’t think that delegate was alone for a minute!
What impressed Merri and me was that no one asked the delegates to help this man.
The friendships of delegates sharing many courses had just grown so strong that it was a natural reaction, just as if a family member was ill. Fortunately, it was only travel fatigue and the delegate didn’t miss a session of the course!
When you join our International Club 2013 you become part of a special family. The very first member to join the club all those years ago wrote, Thank you for the enjoyable and informative courses. I am pleased to be part of your international family and look forward to continuing my education at the next course.
His feeling struck a familiar chord. It has always been one of my greatest satisfactions to see how much fun delegates have getting together, sharing information and making friendships as we learn how to improve our health and increase our wealth.
