New port facility at San Mateo.
Manta is the major port on Ecuador’s central coast. One of the Ecuador’s governmental goals is to upgrade Manta’s airport to international standards which will increase real estate values in the area when this happens.
The beaches at Manta are Tarqui and El Murcielago. Villages near Manta are Jaramijo, Punta Blanca, Montecristi and San Mateo.
San Mateo is a fishing village located on a cliff overlooking the sea 9 miles down the coast from Manta. The locals are friendly and San Mateo is also known among surfers as the longest wave in Ecuador.
Wannasurf.com says the wave quality is world class for experienced with long (150 to 300 m) to very long (300 to 500 m) waves and few surfers during the week and weekend, but also says: San Mateo is a dirty little fishing town with no hostels yet. Don’t even think of eating there if you want to avoid projectile vomiting. The wave barrels off the point hard, then forms a massive wall that will carry you as far as your legs will take you, the very end of the wave barrels and then closes again.
Sounds like someone had a bad meal there. so one might want to think of San Mateo as either a place to surf or invest for now… or if you think as we do (problems create opportunity) perhaps open a restaurant.
