Micro business compassion is one great reason for having your own micro business.

The recent  Micro Business Evolution article at this site said:

About 35 years ago I wrote my first book “Passport to International Profit” and in that book wrote the statement, “The sun is always shining somewhere”.   I was wrong and would like to restate that phrase… “The sun is always shining everywhere!”

Positive evolution and compassion are vital in business. As Winston Churchill once said:

If the human race wishes to have a prolonged and indefinite period of material prosperity, they have only got to behave in a peaceful and helpful way toward one another.

Doing more in your micro business than just seeking a dollar profit is increasingly important. Technology has diminished the dimensions of time and space.  This reduces the gap in knowledge and increasingly lets those who “have not” know how much those who “have” do have. The same technology lets the “have nots” express their frustration at the status quo (as many Middle Eastern dictators have recently discovered) so just having is not what it used to be.

True wealth includes happy neighbors.  Travel and communications technology means that almost everyone  is our neighbor!

Equalization becomes increasingly important and the way to spread wealth around is not to take from the rich and give to the poor but to use compassion in business that helps everyone raise the standard of living through service.

Technology allows micro businesses and compassion to increasingly become the steady horses that pull more of humanity out of the muck into higher lifestyles.

There is opportunity, even in war torn areas, like like Afghanistan.  A recent article at the Department of Defense blog entitled “Kentucky soldier finds visionary Afghans, helps their businesses succeed”  gives a clue how business opportunity that can bring positive evolution and compassion into a community is everywhere.

Here is an excerpt: Lt. Col. Jeffrey Casada is the Kentucky Agribusiness Development Team II leader helps the Panjshir Provincial Reconstruction Team in Afghanistan.

Army Lt. Col. Jeffrey Casada, the Kentucky National Guard Agribusiness  Development Team leader with, helps a Paryan district fish farmer, Abdul  Aziz, fill out an application for a micro grant. The grant allows private business owners to apply for up to $10,000 in funding.

The Kentucky National Guard ADT and Panjshir PRT are teaming up with the local entrepreneur to educate him on modern techniques and expand his business.

Across Afghanistan, the U.S. military is providing micro grants to Afghans to help them excel in private enterprise. Here in Panjshir Province, our Agribusiness Development Team (ADT) looks for Afghans who have a vision for agricultural projects.

We’ve had some success.

One fish farmer, Abdul Aziz, in the Paryan District wanted to expand his trout fishery operation. I asked Abdul Aziz, who is also a mullah and teacher, where he got the idea for building the fishery. He told me the plan had always been in his head.

Abdul Aziz and his sons had already built a wall to protect the fishery from the river, a small hatchery, and raceways to grow out the fish. They were already buying eggs from Pakistan that were hatching in their hatchery. They already had 3,000 fish.

I was very impressed by the family’s initiative. So, the ADT provided a micro grant of $4,800, helping them expand to facilities that can accommodate 40,000 fish. They bought cement for the construction and a higher quality fish food.

The blog goes on to tell how Casada helped chicken grower, Shanawaz Khan, with his vision, energy and enthusiasm. He already has over 800 hens but wanted to expand to 8,000 hens.  The business was not profitable and the system does not allow U.S. government money for a micro grant if a business is not making money.  Casada gave the chicken grower a list of things to accomplish that would make his operation profitable so  in the future a micro grant might be available to expand the chicken farm.

The idea behind these grants is to help people who are willing to work and who have a vision… to make their operations more sustainable and more profitable so they can help the village economy grow.

Using prosperity as a weapon against war… against totalitarianism…. against ignorance…. against poverty and sickness and crime has proven to be the most sustainable local term socio-economic model in the history of humanity.

The Economist picked up on this story of US spending and published an article last week entitled the Surge;  An excerpt says: Had Patrick Lavoie strolled down the main bazaar in Marja a year ago, locals would have greeted him with sniper fire and roadside bombs. Today the American marine captain only has to step out of his base to be overwhelmed by turbaned men anxious to be his best friend.

All along the main road they try to catch his eye and beg him for money to spruce up their shops. As part of his campaign to smarten up the market, which is not especially shabby, Mr Lavoie is happy to oblige. But they must follow his rules, including putting up signs above their shop. Many are in dodgy English, in a town where few can even read Pushtu. One ten-minute conversation with some vegetable-sellers ends with Mr Lavoie agreeing to give them over $8,000 to fix up their stalls. “I’m like Santa Claus!” he says.

With their programme of small grants, goodies such as a surfaced road and street lighting, and a policy of putting many of the district’s “fighting-age” males on the payroll of a rash of new defence militias, the marines are spending $500,000 every ten days in a poor rural community of 250,000. The people have known only predatory government or Taliban rule.

This is a lot of spending and I am sure this is bringing some good.  However in all things, “Medicine is dose.”  With too little water… a person dies of dehydration.  Too much is called drowning!

The Economist article goes on to say:  It is the sort of splurge that horrifies development experts. They say it distorts the local economy and undermines longstanding if less lavish efforts to create a workable local government. Meanwhile, cynics who have seen this kind of thing before repeat the old saw that you can rent an Afghan, but you can’t buy him.

The question is how sustainable all this is, and how stabilising.

This leaves private business as the best initiator or social improvement through business. Government grants… welfare…. handouts… and government investments, by their nature… must be policy and regulation driven.  Government employees cannot be very flexible… cannot break or bend the rules.  Those policy and rules rarely factor in common sense.   

We as micro business owners can do more. We can see… judge… have faith… use our intuition. We can build it hoping that they (the customer) will come.

This gives us as micro business owners considerable latitude in doing the world and society as a whole quite a bit of good.

Such efforts do not always work perfectly.

One time Merri and I created a tour micro business in the Ecuador Andes so a village could generate enough money to buy a spring (their only water source). The project tapped into a spring two miles away.  Previously the villagers had walked downhill to the spring to collect water. It was quite common to see women bent over while walking, carrying heavy loads of water up from the spring to their homes. The owner of the spring was eventually forced to sell the land around the spring which meant the village’s only supply of water was no longer accessible to community members.

We provided the money so the village could purchase the spring for the village cooperative. Next, we took on the the challenge of putting fresh water in every single home in the village. This meant pumping sufficient water up 1,000 feet for much more than a mile.

We funded the installation of a power line, pole and transformer for the area as well as pipe to pump the water from the spring. The water needed to be pumped up the 1,000 feet to a 120,000 gallon water tank, the construction of which was we also funded.

Villagers assisted in the construction process so all villagers throughout the area had running water.  The villagers were so happy with this that they gave us a small beautiful home. Here we are.

Then came the crunch. The water in the spring previously carried up the hill was free. Now electricity and maintenance were required.   One of the village elders had all the water directed to a containment area at his house and charged each owner.  I do not know if his charge was fair or not… but wow did the fur fly!

We ran into a different type of difficulty in the Amazon.

A small Amazonian community of 43 population who lived near the Colombian border wanted a source of income other than selling oil rights.  We funded a small tourist center at the village so they could offer Amazon shamanic lifestyle tours.

We took our first group.

Shortly after the Colombian FARC Guerillas moved into that area… and kidnapped a couple of US oil workers.  The US State Department put this area on a no-go list. Bye Bye business.

The village was able to continue offering tours to Ecuadorians as they were not kidnap targets… but our business opportunity was through.  However, the community had the lodge, the rooms/baths/kitchen/dining and they as Amazonians had the wonder of the Amazon to offer…just not to US citizens!

I point out the potential for failure as well as profit because the risk is worth it!

Merri and I have not regretted the losses and difficulties we sustained in these two ventures for one moment.  In business we sometimes win and we sometimes lose… but in caring… giving and taking positive steps in good faith… we never lose.  And in both of these cases, the community progressed, improved and had hope.

Our business is not just our humanitarian goals. We have humanitarian issues and profit motives as well as our personal desires for fun and fulfillment.  When we integrate all the motives our micro business is better… the world a little bit more positive too.

*  Biofuel production with two bio fuel plants (one needs only 1 mm/year of water , the other 10mm) that produce a net yield in the area of $2000 per hectare (2.5 acres) and the price of the land is only  $8,000- not to bad a return

* Aquaculture i.e. shrimp farms that are totally organic: there is new demand for organic shrimp.

* High yield farming of tropical fruits.

* Investing  in teak production. (need 25 years but nice yield also even considering the 25 years needed)

* Tourism with hosterias on the beach and B&B’s in Bahia as the city badly needs more hotel capacity.

In Cuenca there are the possibilities of B&B’s and farms.

We are excited about this new development that Jean Marie is creating…hopefully good combinations between non Ecuadorians and Ecuadorians!  This rapidly changing world makes it easier, and at the same time almost forces us, to have our own micro business. When we integrate solutions to social and environmental ills with our own financial and spiritual needs… better… even great things can happen.

Seven P Secrets of Self Publishing

Here are seven secrets that can help you earn as a writer and self publisher.

These seven secrets are important because growing numbers of unknown writers have become famous writers and rich by self publishing over the internet.

Take for example Amanda Hocking.  After self publishing her first book at Amazon.com in the spring of 2010 she became one of the the best-selling e-authors. In the next year her book sales grossed approximately $2 million.

In 2011, St. Martin’s press paid Hocking more than $2 million for the world English rights of a four book series.  In 2013 she sold another series to St. Martin’s Press.

E.L. James is another such story.  She sold 250,000 copies of “50 Shades” via Createspace and Amazon.com before publishers noticed her and published the erotic romance trilogy Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker, and Fifty Shades Freed which sold over 70 million copies worldwide, setting the record as the fastest selling paperback of all time.

Hugh Howey is a third example.  He was working for $10 an hour in a book store when he self published his novel Wool, typing in a storage room during his lunch breaks. Soon he was earning over $100,000 a month on Amazon. This helped secure a six-figure book deal from Simon & Schuster, and an option for film by Ridley Scott, director of Blade Runner and Alien.

I know Hugh.  Sometimes we get together at my  farm and play chess (he beats me badly).

These writers are great inspirations.

Hugh’s success could not happen to a more deserving and talented person.  He pours enormous energy into being worthy of his readership.

Neither you or I are likely to have this type of success. The good news is… we do not need this type of success to have a rich and fulfilled lifestyle.  Self Publishing offers so many opportunities that one can have a life that most people only dream of as a journeyman writer, instead of a super star.

May I hastily add that the path to stardom begins as a journeyman… so the journeyman’s path brings success without stardom… but can also lead to stardom.

What most success stories like those of Hugh Howey or E.L James or Amanda Hocking rarely explain how many hours of writing each devoted before their self published book sales soared.  They were journeymen first… stars second.

The sevens secrets are the journeyman secrets… call them a writer’s armory of tools that allows almost anyone to create successful publications for income and fulfillment.

Take Merri’s and my publishing business as an example.  

Merri and I are not writing stars.  We are journeymen who have for more than 40 years, year in a year out, earned solid income writing and self publishing dozens of publications about multiple subjects.

Some years that income has been more than solid… over a million dollars.  Yet in terms of stardom, we are hardly known.

In a moment you’ll see why that’s fine for us and probably for you too.  First some history.

Merri became involved in self publishing over 40 years ago… first helping a veterinarian publish a book on a very specific market… animal acupuncture. What’s Your Passion:  An example is that thirty years ago, a client of Merri’s had a passion to help people who were in pain?  He published a series of pamphlets explaining various chiropractic disorders in very simple terms.  For example: “What Is Whip Lash?”

The pamphlets contained solid information, but were simple 5″ x 7″ brochures with drawings and explanations. He sold them with a rack to chiropractors, who put them in their offices for patients to read.  These little self-published items sold year in and year out for decades.

There are thousands of ideas of this sort that can lead to big business.  It’s just a matter of defining and then acting on your passion.

Although I can work when I please and go where I wish, for me the most important reason for being a publisher is the satisfaction it brings.  I love the projects I take on, so work doesn’t feel like, well… work.

I’m passionate about investing, so I write and self publish ideas about investing.  Merri and I love Ecuador… so we wrote about Ecuador.

What do you love?  If you love golf, then you can write and sell publications about golf.  Love travel, fishing, dogs, dolls, or art?  Write and sell publications in these fields.

Are you concerned about crime, war, poverty or environmental issues?  You can publish information products that help reduce these concerns.

Would you like to help the world be a more spiritual place?  Publish a newsletter, write a book (or hire someone to write it for you), record a tape… publish something that enlightens people.

Whatever your passion, you can immerse yourself in it and earn income by publishing for ereaders, print on demand, CDs, lists, bound books, or any format you choose.
