Merri and I have enjoyed sustained success in business… for one main reason. This reason is NOT because we are smart.  It is NOT because we were so well financed.  It is NOT because we had great mentors or are wonderful managers.

The main theme in our success has been finding and moving forward on new ideas. We focused on the falling US dollar in the 1970s… Emerging markets in the 1980s… Ecuador in the 1990s… Green investing in the 2000s.  Now in the 2010s we are focusing on funky ways to integrate our inner being with external reality so we can enjoy and profit from accelerated change.

When the Soviet Union fell I often wondered what it would been like to have awakened to learn that everything one had been taught… everything one believed in… had been wrong… a lie… a mistake.

Now I kinda know because many who grew up and lived in the capitalized world are feeling the same way.  Everything we learned… knew and believed in is eroding or has eroded.  As the infrastructure of the West is falling apart… so too is the infrastructure of our economic and social beliefs.

One can either fall into a funk (one definition of the word funk is a deeply depressed state) or remember that though the Roman Empire collapsed 2,000 years ago, Italy has remained a great place.

Merri and I have often been called crazy… but our business has always been touting some revolutionary idea well before it becomes mainstream.  We’ve never written much about the norm or established ways.   This is why our business has been growing so rapidly now.  Evolution is speeding up and increasing numbers of people see that they can no longer depend on the old ways.

This evolutionary approach has worked because the cycle of life… birth… growth… maturity… decline and death is our reality… in all things and this approach led us to funky business.

Why funky and what does funky mean?

Funky is an evolving word… dating back into the 1700s when it described a bad smell.

Today the meaning of funky slides towards “revolutionary” as its meaning emerges from the funky music era.

Answers.com says of “funky” WORD HISTORY   When asked which words in the English language are the most difficult to define precisely, a lexicographer would surely mention funky. Linguist Geneva Smitherman has tried to capture the meaning of this word in Talkin and Testifyin: The Language of Black America, where she explains that funky means “[related to] the blue notes or blue mood created in jazz, blues, and soul music generally, down-to-earth soulfully expressed sounds; by extension [related to] the real nitty-gritty or fundamental essence of life, soul to the max.” The first recorded use of funky is in 1784 in a reference to musty, old, moldy cheese. Funky then developed the sense “smelling strong or bad” and could be used to describe body odor. The application of funky to jazz was explained in 1959 by one F. Newton in Jazz Scene: “Critics are on the search for something a little more like the old, original, passion-laden blues: the trade-name which has been suggested for it is ‘funky’ (literally: ‘smelly,’ i.e. symbolizing the return from the upper atmosphere to the physical, down-to-earth reality).”

Funky to me means unusual… off the wall… out of the box… unorthodox.

Two Swedish professors, from the Stockholm School of Economics, Jonas Ridderstrale and Kjell Nordstrom wrote two books about this entitled “Funky Business: Talent Makes Capital Dance and Karaoke Capitalism: Daring to Be Different in a Copycat World”

An Amazon.com book review says of the first book: Oh dear. A book called Funky Business by two Swedish academics. At first glance, it has all the allure of Benny and Bjorn’s (from Abba) sadly never-released concept album about life as a middle manger in a multinational conglomerate. There is something earnestly hip about the way Kjell Nordström and Jonas Ridderstråle of the Stockholm School of Economics present themselves. “They do gigs not seminars. These gigs sell out. They have shaved heads and wear black,” says the blurb.

But that’s what makes Funky Business worth reading. It’s not so much the novelty of the authors’ argument, which boils down to the notion that in an oversupplied world, ideas are what separate successful companies and individuals from failures. Rather, it’s the vitality of their argument and the rhythm of their language that make their ideas so compelling. “Traditional roles, jobs, skills, ways of doing things, insights, strategies, aspirations, fears, and expectations no longer count. In this environment, we cannot have business as usual. We need business as unusual. We need different business. We need innovative business. We need unpredictable business. We need surprising business. We need funky business.”

The book, which is almost a virtuoso display of rhetoric and intellectual power, bursts at the seams with the force of its argument and the weight of its colorful evidence. Sources quoted range from the pope to the British band the Prodigy. Funky, Inc., they say, “isn’t like any other company. It is not a dull, old conglomerate. It is not a rigid bureaucracy. It is an organization that actually thrives on the changing circumstances and unpredictability of our times.”

This is great entertainment. But the slick veneer does not invalidate the way the book pulls together many existing strands of thought about how business is developing and evokes a coherent and intriguing vision of a future whose main feature will be incoherence.

Management guru Tom Peters says of “Karaoke Capitalism: Daring to Be Different in a Copycat World” : If you loved Funky Business as much as I did, you’ll love Karaoke Capitalism. Weird? Most certainly. Different? Most definitely. But, if you want to re-imagine your organization and your career it’s a though-provoking place to start.

Seven P Secrets of Self Publishing

Here are seven secrets that can help you earn as a writer and self publisher.

These seven secrets are important because growing numbers of unknown writers have become famous writers and rich by self publishing over the internet.

Take for example Amanda Hocking.  After self publishing her first book at Amazon.com in the spring of 2010 she became one of the the best-selling e-authors. In the next year her book sales grossed approximately $2 million.

In 2011, St. Martin’s press paid Hocking more than $2 million for the world English rights of a four book series.  In 2013 she sold another series to St. Martin’s Press.

E.L. James is another such story.  She sold 250,000 copies of “50 Shades” via Createspace and Amazon.com before publishers noticed her and published the erotic romance trilogy Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker, and Fifty Shades Freed which sold over 70 million copies worldwide, setting the record as the fastest selling paperback of all time.

Hugh Howey is a third example.  He was working for $10 an hour in a book store when he self published his novel Wool, typing in a storage room during his lunch breaks. Soon he was earning over $100,000 a month on Amazon. This helped secure a six-figure book deal from Simon & Schuster, and an option for film by Ridley Scott, director of Blade Runner and Alien.

I know Hugh.  Sometimes we get together at my  farm and play chess (he beats me badly).

These writers are great inspirations.

Hugh’s success could not happen to a more deserving and talented person.  He pours enormous energy into being worthy of his readership.

Neither you or I are likely to have this type of success. The good news is… we do not need this type of success to have a rich and fulfilled lifestyle.  Self Publishing offers so many opportunities that one can have a life that most people only dream of as a journeyman writer, instead of a super star.

May I hastily add that the path to stardom begins as a journeyman… so the journeyman’s path brings success without stardom… but can also lead to stardom.

What most success stories like those of Hugh Howey or E.L James or Amanda Hocking rarely explain how many hours of writing each devoted before their self published book sales soared.  They were journeymen first… stars second.

The sevens secrets are the journeyman secrets… call them a writer’s armory of tools that allows almost anyone to create successful publications for income and fulfillment.

Take Merri’s and my publishing business as an example.  

Merri and I are not writing stars.  We are journeymen who have for more than 40 years, year in a year out, earned solid income writing and self publishing dozens of publications about multiple subjects.

The pamphlets contained solid information, but were simple 5″ x 7″ brochures with drawings and explanations. He sold them with a rack to chiropractors, who put them in their offices for patients to read.  These little self-published items sold year in and year out for decades.

There are thousands of ideas of this sort that can lead to big business.  It’s just a matter of defining and then acting on your passion.

Although I can work when I please and go where I wish, for me the most important reason for being a publisher is the satisfaction it brings.  I love the projects I take on, so work doesn’t feel like, well… work.

I’m passionate about investing, so I write and self publish ideas about investing.  Merri and I love Ecuador… so we wrote about Ecuador.

What do you love?  If you love golf, then you can write and sell publications about golf.  Love travel, fishing, dogs, dolls, or art?  Write and sell publications in these fields.

Are you concerned about crime, war, poverty or environmental issues?  You can publish information products that help reduce these concerns.

Would you like to help the world be a more spiritual place?  Publish a newsletter, write a book (or hire someone to write it for you), record a tape… publish something that enlightens people.
