A recent message looked at how our guests in Cotacachi lose weight, inches and feel better naturally because the food is fresh and they walk more.
The same is true here in San Clemente. Walking the beach and eating great seafood are two treats we enjoy here at Palmazul. Merri and I usually walk four or five miles on the beach each day and take a dip in the sea. The water is great.
Friday night Merri and I enjoyed great a great seafood meal with our friends Bob & Barbara Humphrey. We ambled two minutes across the road from Vistazul to one of our favorite restaurants, owned and run by Gabriel Grazini.
There is a quite a continental population here in San Clemente, German (runs a little bar on the beach), French, Spanish (operates a hotel down the beach) and Italian. Gabriel’s place is quirky-funky… open pretty much by reservation only.
Here is the entrance to his place so you can see what mean by quirky-funky… three tables… handmade stick furniture… dirt floor… two dogs and a puppy… plus our hound dog Ma… six people there is a crowd.
His pizzas are to kill for… real Italian… his Grandmother’s recipe… not the Pizza Hut stuff… be assured.
Bob & I walked over Friday to arrange a Saturday night meal and Gabriel informed us he was cooking a … just caught… large fish… Milanese style.
This is real Milanese. We could not resist.
This was so delicious..so fresh and his Milanese sauce was mouthwatering.
The reason the Ecuador seafood is so good is due to the local fishermen. When Merri and I walk the beach we pass many of their boats.
We also join in their ritual… the sea giving life to man.
The fishermen head into the sea… their boats piled high with nets.
They go out quite some distance, then return to shore, dragging two lines attached to the net.
They park their boat and…
spread out in two rows… to…
haul in the net.
You can see both rows here.
The nets are far out and require quite a pull.
Finally after an hour or more of dragging, the net is close. The birds come in.
But the work is not done.
The net has to be kept taught and on the ocean floor.
Finally the fish are in. Everyone takes a look.
They collect a personal fish or two.
In the pocket.
Not much…
pay…
for hours of work… but they are proud of their catch.
The rest is left for market.
Not a lot… hauled off in these trucks.
Though the work is not done. The nets have to be hauled.
and collected. Later they will have to be dried.
Finally the fishermen head home.
Leaving the cleanup to the birds and the beach dogs.
Within minutes… all that is left is the act… the fishing that’s been… and will be again… time after time.
Plus the wonderful fresh fish served to us from this time honored tradition.
