This was my thought as we viewed property on our recent Ecuador real estate tour. My mind was not on the taxes, but on the flowers as I viewed the flora at just one river house we visited. Gardening is a favorite hobby and Ecuador is an amazing place for flowers. Everything grows…and fast!

What a nice place to garden and smell the roses…and other plants.
To do so is much easier because of two huge Ecuador tax breaks.
First Ecuador does not tax income earned abroad. So those on a corporate pension or Social Security can live in Ecuador and spend it all because there is no Ecuador tax on that income.
Furthermore there is no capital gains on the occasional real estate sale.
Just like in the US, if you make a business of buying and selling cars or real estate you become a dealer and may be taxed.
If you just buy a property once in awhile and sell for a profit…even though it could be a large profit…there is no Ecuador tax liability.
So one can live in Ecuador on a pension ($1,000 a month is the minimum for residence). They can supplement the pension by keeping an eye open for the once-in-awhile real estate deal…earning it all tax free from an Ecuador point of view.

This low cost of living and Ecuador’s tax benefits make it much easier for those of us who like to garden…to grow and smell the roses!
