Super Spanish Course Success

Super Spanish Course Successes help explain why we should be careful what we worry about.

Our Worries May Come True in English or Spanish

At our last investment seminar some delegates started telling other delegates that Citi Bank was being shut down due to a 4 trillion dollar plus judgment from the World Court .

Or something like that.

I did not try to clarify further at the time. The idea was so far removed from reality. We have plenty more to do. This seemed a total waste of our limited capacity.

Our groups have a pretty good time…here are delegates at a recent Super Spanish course enjoying the sun and a coffee break.

Regretfully two young ladies at this course believed this total Citibank nonsense and were actually worried about how to get their money out of the banking system. To reassure them before they did something that really could bring harm, I stepped in, searched the phrase “ Citibank World Court ”. Some of the most amazingly stupid stuff came up with November 6 headlines that read:

“ENTIRE CITIBANK BOARD BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN ARRESTED

PROVOST MARSHAL MAY ARREST THREE U.S. PRESIDENTS TOO

U.S. MARINES AND AIR FORCE DRAFTED IN TO ASSIST AS NECESSARY

SOME 3,000 BANKERS AND OTHERS BEING TAKEN INTO CUSTODY

NINE AIRCRAFT ARE BEING FILLED WITH PRISONERS

PROVOST MARSHAL TO TAKE OVER CITIBANK AND MAKE THE PAYMENT “

Wow. This nonsense is right up there with reality shows…so we know it cannot be real!

The truth is the Citibank lost a bundle (billions not trillions) on sub prime loans and the CEO had to take a walk (but with a reported $140 million golden parachute)…but nine planeloads of bankers and three presidents arrested?

Citibank is too big to be allowed to fail…so at the worst they would be bailed out and the US dollar would fall more. This is just another reason you should subscribe to our multi currency service at http://www.garyascott.com/catalog/bldh

Plus if this had really happened we would have read about it in National Enquirer by now. Right?

Let’s face it. There are plenty of important things worth worrying about…the extra half pound we put on over Thanksgiving lunch or how to find a parking spot at Walmart on Black Friday.

If we really want worries, why not take on the big stuff like global warming…famine…poverty…prejudice…war? There is plenty to worry about and plenty of people who happily hand out worries if you want.

Yet be careful about your worries. We all have limits to how much we can worry about…really…specific limits.

We are all subject to a very human feature called “Limited Channel Capacity” (LCC).

LCC means that our minds have the ability to discern only six or seven variations of any one thing. This is the limitation of our channels of discrimination. A study on this tested the human ability to discriminate sounds. This study showed that if people are given a range of low sounds, they can very accurately discriminate between six or seven low tones. After six or seven choices, a person’s ability to discriminate is dramatically reduced and confused. The study group could not tell if more tones were higher and or lower.

Then the test was repeated with high tones. Again those tested were very accurate if the range of tones was limited to six or seven. Beyond this number they lost their ability to discriminate accurately.

NOW COMES THE INTERESTING PART.

When the study group was given a series of high and low tones mixed together, you would think they could discriminate six or seven high and six or seven low. Not true! The group could still only handle six or seven tones, even if some were high and others low, before becoming confused.

This means that our capacity to discriminate is limited to just a few factors. This forces us to paint people, events, situations etc. black or white, when reality is infinite shades of grey. For example, if we see a wealthy person return a wallet, we judge them to be honest. What we really know is that person is honest in that context. We do not possess capacity to imagine and discriminate what that individual would do in a wide variety of situations, so we paint them honest or dishonest. We might also judge a person who needed $100 to save his baby daughter’s life as dishonest if he kept a wallet found. That person may have interpreted the wallet as a gift from God to save his daughter, but we would define the answer to that person’s prayer as a crime. (No wonder the world often seems screwed up.)

This means we, as human beings, have a short range of discrimination but live in a universe with a very broad range to discriminate within.

There is more than enough that we can focus our concerns, so how do we choose?

One way to improve our choices in what we pay attention to is to be wiser. This is why we conduct our Super Thinking + Spanish courses. The course helps readers learn to speak Spanish yes…but more important it actually helps them to be healthier and wiser. Merri has a wonderful report on the learning system that evolved with the help of Bulgarian educator, Georgi Lozanov. Several books, (Super Learning – The Mozart Effect) have been written about this as well. Merri was trained by Dr. Lozanov and the course Steve conducts for us is based around the idea of becoming fluent in Spanish in one week. However, there are huge health and intelligence benefits to be gained as well.

If you would like this report, please send Merri a note at merriscott@hotmail.com

Until next message, may all your worries be good ones and real.
