Favorite Quito Hotel

Merri and I have been traveling for 40 years and few hotels appeal to us like Hotel Quito. This is not a new hotel…nor the fanciest around.

However the friendly staff and the view make up for so much it lacks!

Hotel Quito sits atop a high mountain overlooking the bustle of Quito.

Above the melee it faces down into a jumbled mixture of mankind. Tall skyscrapers sit next to decrepit block shacks with rusting tin roofs. Looking east the hotel backs onto a huge rift that drops immediately down and runs for several miles before opening into the broad valley of Tumbaco, Quito’s favorite suburb.

From rooms at the back of the hotel, the lobby, huge lush gardens and swimming pool, and stunning views of sunrise…all of these are exquisitely stunning amenities.

Each morning Rosetta rays smash through masses of morning clouds and tint the valley views in a soft pink glow. At twilight the panorama, unfolds as millions of lights awaken in the dusk and twinkle through the altitude thinned air like a million Christmas ornaments.

The Hotel Quito is an Art Deco hotel with outstanding gardens (see the second picture) and views that seem to go on forever in every direction. The combination of sweet Indigenous people serving you and Swiss management is great

The picture above shows Merri and me with tour operators having a breakfast meeting at the hotel’s Techo del Mundo (roof of the world) restaurant.

Gossamer clouds spin in golden webs with the rising sun and we watch this city of snow capped volcanos come awake.

The Hotel Quito is an Art Deco hotel with outstanding gardens and views that seem to go on forever in every direction. The combination of sweet Indigenous people serving you and the views is great.

Then we travel to and stay at Hacienda Cusin, a 383 year old monastery that has been converted into an exquisite experience...with its charming guest quarters. Cusin's garden's are exude a soft sweetness...lanes totally covered by Angel's trumpets, paths lined in flowers and trees and of course brilliantly decked out hummingbirds. Every meal is a gourmet experience and every wall an antique collector's delight. Choose a room with electric heat if you wish, but I suggest the fireplace option where eucalyptus fed fires crack and cast dim shadows on your evening wall.

Hotel Quito is very comfortable, but more important it is loaded with history and charm. The hotel offers a slower, easier, more gracious pace of times past. This slowing down alone is one great way to be healthier and enjoy wealth more!

Consider visiting this hotel when you can.
